has anyone tried to develop a collaboration solution product based on FMP 7? or just a collaboration platform that includes task assignments, project tracking and processes... instant messaging (is it possible?), sharing files (this should be possible?)... etc. if so, how's the outcome compare to commercial products... is it as good as it can be like those good ones? easy to develop? much limitations? or easy to use? thanks~ p.s. i am thinking of developing a complete collaboration suite accompanied with database system with FM7... should i go for it or...? :-D

Hi, I've been trying to figure this out for a while now... I have Clients and Events tables and they are related through Registration -which has EventID(primary key from Events) and ClientID(primary key from Clients). Each Event has an Evaluation from different Clients. Currently I have different Evaluation-session tables such that a set of EventIDs with the same Session Name(from Events table) are in same Evaluation table. So each Evaluation table has a global field which is Session Name and is related to Events through this. Heya, I have a database that tracks tasks. Our SQL server holds employee info, but I've imported all of this into another DB. This second DB has the fields Last Name, First Name, Employee Code, Office, and Extension. I would like to pick, from a list that shows last name, first name, and when I make the selection, I want to see the code, the office and the extension get filled into the appropriate fields on the tasks DB. Hey folks, I've been pulling my hair out trying to get this to work. Here's the prob. I have three drop down lists with around 10 choices each. i have a calculation field that displays the balances of some numbers. the criteria are as follows: greater than 0: green smaller than 0: red equal to 0: blue now, TextColor works perfectly. however, if you happen to use "Number format" on the field, for example, adding a leading "$" sign. the TextColor function will fail to work. please try yourself and see if it so for you too. I am running on Windows 2003 enterprise server, Filemaker Developer 7v02. should this be considered a bug? but not being able to use the leading/trailing signs and number formats with TextColor is a great imperfection...

I'm wondering if fm7 doesn't lower the DPI of images or something atleast on it's conversion process to fm7. My solution in fm6 and below left the image files at 1.06 GB. after converting it to fm7, I was shocked to find the file the images where in is at 300 MB. I like that it's storing them more efficiently, just would like to know how it's doing it. As long as it's not standardizing the images down to like 72 DPI and lowering the color depth as my solution needs to have the images print nice and be capable of doing higher than 72 DPI. I'm new with FMP, so this may be a silly question - I'm working on an employee database and want to display the employee picture (along w/their personal info.) using a container field. Do I have to insert each employee picture or can I generate a script to automatically populate the container based on url location of the picture. All pics are stored in the same directory and the pic name is username.jpg. I have the username in a different field - so I'm hoping I can pull the picture name and url and somehow populate the container field.... Any advice would be great!

I have created an asset tracking database which I need to create a report for. I have a table containing an entry for each asset no, the equipment type that it is and the make and model. I then have a second table containing an entry for each asset tracking entry. This includes a field for the date of the movement and a field with radio buttons containing 6 options for the location of the movement. What I require is a report telling me the totals of a particular type of equipment, make and model which are deployed, tested etc (the options of my 6 locations) at any one time. I am trying to create a database for an adoption project, where it will hold thousands of people with their DNA profiles. As new people are added it must check all records to find matches based on their DNA profiles. I have been trying to do this script that will print a document for a record but it will not work correctly. What I want it to do: User on a data entry layout in browse mode, clicks print button. Window stays on this layout (from users view point) and a print dialog pops up. They choose the stuff in print dialog and click print. Document prints. I have a portal setup for a card collectors DB. I have it setup with different colors to reflect the different options the user has to pick from such as 'own', 'trade', & 'sold'. When the user selects a new record for the portal I want the new record to be first in the portal. I want the sort to be 'own' first, 'trade' second, and 'sold' third as they are listed in the portal. The 'own', trade',& 'sold' are listed on the form as checkboxes, so they either have a value of '1' or '0, zero'. I have tried setting up the order through sort portals, but it never comes out right. Records created via a portal (quote records via relationship from a source record) started to vanish today. I went troubleshooting the relationship (both in the same file), and found that it seemed set up right, and was still treating old records correctly. Records created directly in the related quotes table seemed to be stable. (The solution had been in use for months, one of my first FM7 creations.) So, I created an external table, and had it import all the quotes table records. TRYING to print a billing statement with two portals: invoices and payments. Each portal is 100 rows to allow for plenty of activity during the month. Everything is fine except the second portal. The headers above the second portal properly slide up to near the bottom of the first portal. But the second portal itself starts after 4 or 5 blank pages. Yes, sliding is turned on for all necessary objects. Yes, the body is reduced to the point that it's touching the lowest object in the body. Is this yet another bug? How do I get a found set from one file to another? Files: I have created three files, one file holds the date, second file holds the interface (layouts for data entry), and the last file contains my report layouts (printable ones). Problem: A user does a search in the "Interface" file and a found set in listed. Now the user wants to print the list if records. Hello, I can't seem to find more info on Portals. I have a couple questions: 1. I have the relationship setup to create new record when the user finishes a line in the portal and hits tab or select a field in the next line they can start the new record in the portal. How can I set this up so the user has to hit a button to create a new record for a portal and not have FM auto create the new record so the user can't do this in error? 2. Very noobie question here. I have a table called purchase_invoices which is bound to a data entry layout (Purchase order entry), on this layout I would like to place a button which would list all records in a new laylout. I only wish to list certain fields and each record must be in a single row with the next record below etc. I do not wish to do this as a report as I would like to add some addition functionality like click on button to go to selected record in original layout. i found that in table view, the table's header's display and fonts seem to be preset, and i can't find where to configure them. Filemaker cannot display foreign characters right at this preset font when printing, but it displays them right on screen. bad... when printing in table view, those foreign characters all turn into... squares. whileas preview actually shows them displaying correctly. i tried printing into a PDF file... same result... so it's mostly Filemaker's problem, not the printer's.

Hi, I'm trying to change some features on a student database solution which was designed by someone that we no longer want to employ (don't ask!). It was originally a FM6 solution but I've converted it to FM7 whilst still keeping it as 16 related separate files. I have a network of multiple users with a database using lots of esoteric words. Spelling is important and Fm has to learn all the terminology for spelling to go smoothly. Does every copy of FM on every client have to learn all the terms or can the Host computer host the dictionary? The latter would speed up the learning process for FM and accelerate data entry for the users.

I've had to reinstall the application 4 times. The symptons are; after double clicking I get the splash screen and then it quits. This happens twice, on the third try I get the splash screen with a line of garbage that looks like it might be filling in the serial number, it quits and then I get a message that a virus or something else has corrupted FMP, determine the error and reinstall. Then sometimes when I start the application, it works. I can't determine how or why this is happening...help!

Hello all! Filemaker has announced that they close the upgrade in September and that they stop selling FM6 at the same time. What is that really meaning? If you have a application which cant be upgraded because Filemaker doesnt let the Changeprinter upgrade plugin how could your client get the needed software, in my case FM5? I've been printing from Classic due to the EPS/PDF low-res printing problem in FMP 5.5 and 6 on OS X. I just got my copy of FMP 7 (which I understood would fix the problem), and imported PDFs (put on the layout behind text fields) still look horrible. Am I missing something? thanks, Don

when customizing business tracker from the publishing business to a wholesale painting business, i am having trouble with the catalog. the catalog script refers to a "category" field that i no longer used. i've tried to change the field to "size" of the paintings, but the script still doesn't pull up the records. can anyone help me with the script? or tell me what i need to do as far as defining fields or changing certain of the layouts that the script refers to to make it work?

I am just starting to convert a FM6 file to FM7, but have been horribly disapointed by the speed at which FM7 runs. Switching layouts, creating calculations, and even basic functions like replace and set field take a VERY long time. I have downloaded the latest version of FM7 and am running a 1Ghz G4 powerbook with OS10.3. I am afraid of upgrading for fear that no one will use the system if it is too slow. How are people dealing with this and are the folks at Filemaker doing anything to improve this? Thanks David

All, I have a FM6 solution that was recenty converted to FM7. It's around 55 files, 350 MB total, and was just converted to 7--not optimized in any way. (We're testing the waters at the same time as beginning to plan migration) One immediate problem is the SLOWNESS of opening files in FM7. We have a simple "System Menu" file that opens as quick as one would expect, but trying to open most other files from there (via a simple "Open File" script) can take as long as 30 seconds or more... and not even on a server, but on a local machine! Hi! Can you easily import the contents and structure of a MySQL database into FileMaker? Or, at the very least, the data from a MySQL database? I have a MySQL database that I would like to have in FileMaker. How can I lock text in a (global) field so a user cannot modify it? I tried preventing entry in browse and find modes, but that also prevents access to the scroll bar. Since the text is too long to display, the field must be scrollable--but I don't want the user to be able to modify it. Thanks. RD

hy there I am new to filemaker and strugle a little bit with some operations i would like to perform. i want to make a phone log, that is conceted with a customer table. the phone log table consist of the fields: name, caller_phone, message, date, call_for. FMP7 on reopen forgets the last screen and sort order. I arrange the screen and close, but when I open again the sort order is gone and FM is on a file in about the middle of the database instead of, say, at the top of the list where I left it. What's wrong? Is this a new "feature?" Version 6 always came back when it was left--same screen, same found group, same file. Furthermore, in 7, when I take a file from list to main, when I go back to list, the list has scrolled down a screen and is on a different file. Sorry if this has been asked, but I couldn't find an answer by searching... Our simple invoice db includes several repeating fields (quantity, description, price, extended). I have borders (top, bottom, left, right) turned on. In v5.5 it would put borders around all the repetitions. Now in v7, it will only put borders around repetitions that contain text. This looks silly to me. Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong? Your help is appreciated!

I am setting up user accounts in FM7, and checking the "force user to change password at first login" option. When users go to login, they receive the prompt, put in their initial password, and the new one. The problem is that when they are logged in, their access privileges don't seem to match what they are expected to be. (User can't edit or view records even when they are supposed to) But if they do a relogin again, then everything works as expected. This only occurs when you create or reset an account with the "user must change password" option chosen. If they change the password themselves, it works fine. Hi All, Just getting started with FMP7 here (well, getting started with Filemaker, period.) I successfully merged my two FMP6 files into one multi-table FMP7 file and would like to begin adding modules to it. This is a rolodex application. The first thing I wanted to do was create a script to generate faxes. The way I'd l ike it to go is the user looks up the recipient's name in the rolodex, then a "create fax" button would create a new record in a fax table, with the recipient's name & company info plucked from the rolodex and pasted into the appropriate fields as a lookup. One table (admin) allows a user to enter in details about a program, including individual fields which indicate all the days during the year the program will operate. I have a second table in the DB which users will be able to access to enter in positive attendance days for students. In a found set, how can I bulk enter data into related fields inside a portal? I can create a new related record in the portal by simply entering data, which creates the related record and puts the data in the field, but how can I do this in bulk for a found set? I try "command =" but that doesn't work for fields in a portal. (It pretends to, but nothing happens.) Is there a way to bulk edit related fields in a portal whereby the related records are created and the data inserted into the field?

I'm having a real problem with fonts. I have several users in my solution, as well as one or two people helping me with programing. I have made some specific choices about fonts in my layouts, but with so many different people accessing the database, those decisions have been fruitless. Internet sharing is so important, and it gets disabled if IWP is access on local network. i tried several ports with no success, such as 80, 123, and 591. I have a card collectors database with 2 tables one for cards and one for sales. The sales table is a one to many relationship to cards table. I also have a self join to cards table to do lookups by series of cards. They are related by 'series'. I have a database configured for IWP. The main layout is supposed to work as a web form. The user creates a new record, then asks for a registration number, then there is a button to a script that does lookups of several fields in a related database, with the relationship based on the registration number. This way a registered user gets all his personal info entered into the new record he just created, and can then go on to fill in the information I need from them. This works well, until I attach a "Not Empty" validation to any of the fields in the main database. When I hit the lookup button the screen refreshes, but no lookups take place. Hi guys, I have a quotations database that has a portal to list the line items in (this way I keep a track of everything by accessing the line items database from invoicing, purchases, returns, etc - all writing to the same record) Now, if I make a quotation and then I want to make a revision version of the quotation, I want to be able to make a duplicate of a portal row so that I do not change the original record but a new one. Now that Filemaker 7 is all in one file, I cannot do an external script to say duplicate record. What is the new answer to this problem? When I attempt to update my copy of FM7 Developer On OSx Panther It stops midway through the proces and reports "An unexpected error occurred while installing "554490" 1008: 17, -4". I have a database that has multiple tables, to represent Visual Effects shots in a movie. One table - Shot - breaks down the shot into items such as description, day or night, length and so on. This is the master table with a unique shot number field as the main form of id. A second table - Element - breaks down the images required in each shot - Live Action, CG, Stills and so on. I am currently a version 6 user. I have scripts that import data from MS Access. There are two limitations of v6 that I would like to ged rid of. And I am wondering if v7Pro solves these issues. I browsed the user manual for v7 but did not find what I need. The ODBC connectivity in version 6 does not allow me to use a parameter. In other words, I cannot run a parameter query. I have a database that is used to track job applicants. Each season, we have a "recruitment" period, twice per year. After each season, I'd like to be able to archive those applicants who we're no longer interested in... especially since one of the database's main functions is to show the current crop of applicants on various reports. Hi guys, I have got a database with 4700 records in it and I have added a new field. I do not want it to be a calculation field but I want it to have a set result in all previous records. Hello all, I am interviewing for a job that includes administration of a FileMaker database. I have never used FileMaker before, but I am very familiar with PostgreSQL and MySQL, and I have dabbled with Oracle a bit. Could anyone point out any basic guides to FileMaker for me? Hi, I had no idea where to post this so I hope i'm in the right area. This may be an obvious question but i can't figure out how to do it. I have a database with stock codes. Each product has an associated file (with pictures, notes, etc. about the product) on a remote server. My question is how do i get filemaker to open the file for a certain product. I have the path to the file stored in one field and the stock code matches the file name. I don't want to have to hard code the path of each product to a button or anthing, i'd like it to be dynamic. There are different categories the prints can be entered in, and in each category the print can be given a blue, red, white or green ribon. We have an elaborate collection of FileMaker 6 databases that relate to form a system that manages our business processes. We are looking at migrating to 7. Is there a 'general rule' we can follow as to how (and how many) we should arrange our tables in files? Having 50 tables in one file does not seem logical to me. I have a strange problem and I was wondering if anyone else had a similar problem and possibly a solution. I have a script in "File A" that calls a script in "File B". After the child script in B is fully executed, script A executes the "Exit Application" script step. The problem is that the filemaker.exe process is left hanging. The user does not know this until they try to open filemaker back up and nothing happens. If you go into the process window from the Task Manager and kill the filemaker.exe, you can go back into filemaker. After some trial and error, I discovered that the filemaker.exe is not left hanging if I don't call a script in File B. …

I'm wondering if it is possible to create a related record just by a relationship and an auto-enter field? What I would like is where I make a new record in the parent table and set the appropriate field values in parent table and once I commit the record a new record is created in the related table. This is without using a set field of the related keys in the related table. In FileMaker 6, if I had a value list that pulled data from two fields, say item number and item name, and set the value list to sort by the second field, I could use that field to jump in the list. For example, if the value list looked like this: 12345 Apples 67890 Oranges 24680 Pears I could press the letter 'P' and jump right to 'Pears' in the list. I cannot seem to do this in FM7. Is this no longer a feature? Or is there some trick to make it behave in this fashion?

I am creating a solution for a music school that has tables for FAMILIES, STUDENTS, FACULTY and INVOICES. hi all... i have two tables related to each other by Purchasing Order. In the master record there is Customer Name, Purchasing Number, etc. Then in child table are order details. i made another layout that is supposed to be available only in table view, which lists all the orders and their details. the layout is based on the child table, and it has a field Customer Name that is from the master table. what happens is that in the table view, the Customer Name gets repeated several times in its field for each row.
