This is probably very simple: How do you place two calculations in a field (auto-enter data section)? If I just place these two calculations (see below) in this area, it gives me an error "An operator is expected here". Any help is greatly appreciated in advance. Hi, Its my first time posting here and I could really use a hand! I'm used to using relational databases such as MySQL as I do a lot of dynamic database work for websites using PHP. I'm now trying to get used to working with FMdev 7 for a major project. The problem I'm having seems really silly - I just can't see how to enter a new record across multiple tables at the same time. Hi guys, I'm just wanting some different ideas to deal with pebcak. I have a user who insists she is creating a new record and losing her data. Everytime I stand behind her it works fine. No one else is having this problem. Truth be told we did have a server crash and stupid filemaker opened up a backed up copy unbeknownst to us (what a drama). Anyway, the only conclusion that I can come up with is it's a pebcak and the user is in find mode. Problem - try telling that to an over confident self assured person who insists she is clicking on new record. hello, i have build 7 databases using filmaker 4 and posted them all online using the custom web publishing. it worked very fine using the CDML tags and html. But when filemaker 7 was installed the cdml was not understood, we cannot retrieve the databases online anymore, we had to go on isntant web publishing! please help ....

Another question because y'all are so ******* smart. When I have a calculation field, I don't want it to calculate the result if ANY of the referenced fields are blank. I know of the "Do not calculate if all referenced fields are empty" check box, but of course that's not what I want. Is this possible?

I'm trying to paste data into the last record of a portal row, but it keeps being pasted in the first record/line of the portal. I'm sure it's super simple but I'm stuck. Here's the setup: On a layout I have song info, title, length etc. and two portals one for publishers and one for composers that access the contacts table using the Contact ID field as the link. If the data inputter don't remember the ID# for a particular person I have a button that takes him to a search result of all publishers. Hello everyone. I am attaching my file that I have created for my Martial Arts school. I didn't want to have to pay 300 bucks for one. What I have so far is fairly functional. It records all of my student info, and I can invoice a student. I guess my questions are as follows: 1. How does my overall format look? Now that I have FMP7, we can finally make join tables where it makes sense to do so. For example, I have a Person table, and a Project table. Multiple people can be assigned to multiple projects. So here I added a PersonProject table, that relates the two based on the person_id and project_id. So far, so good. Correct db structure, makes logical sense, and all that. I'm trying to write a script to take information from one field in a portal row (with multiple records), cut and paste into a single repeating field in a related table, and then loop back to the portal, go to the next row, cut and paste the same info on the next row into the next line in the repeating field. I own a used book shop. I want to create a database of sold books. In other words, when a customer buys a book, I want to create a record with title, author, price, category, etc., fields. The problem is that it's just too time-consuming if a customer buys 20 books. Bar codes are only of limited usefulness in the used book biz for many reasons. What I would like is something like the Quickfill feature in Quicken. I swear i'm not going mad... I have a table - publications. I add fields into it. I do all manner of things - no worries. I close the db. I open and the fields have disappeared. I have it set to automatically save changes to layout. On the flip side - I have another table (same database) which is not related to publications in any way. It won't let me create a new record saying that there is no table. BUT THERE IS. double checking the layout reveals that the fields are associated as does the fields and relationships. Do i have a bug in my db or something else??? Any help would be appreciated.

I have a bit of an emergency and would appreciate any quick help. I need to print out 250 certificates this weekend from FM7 database that I built but when I inserted an EPS graphic for a background the print output was pixelated. I tried every variation and setting I could think of but I'm out of ideas why this is happening. I was able to do this last year with FM6 (the EPS-friendly version), but cannot get it to work with FM7. I've re-inserted the graphic, cut and pasted the graphic, and exported from Illustrator and Photoshop. Does anyone have any ideas?? Thanks!!

Trying out the trial version to see if I can replace Paradox. I am trying to use a calc field to combine Last name first name. If I do a calc field with just one field (either one) it produces a result. If I try Lname+", "+Fname I get either a blank result or a "0" (even tho it says text field). How do I return to a specific record in a script? I've figured out how to specify a script parameter using Get (Record ID), but how do I use that later in the script to go back to that same record? I'm guessing that I'd specify "Go to record" and use a calculation? But what is the syntax to recall the Record ID that I specified at hte beginning? Or am I going about this all wrong? I am currently using the trial version of Filemaker pro 7 to store and analyze financial data. some of the calculations and sorting are getting very complex so it takes a great deal of time to compile different reports. I can't get the scroll bar to show in a portal. When I select and unselect "show vertical scroll bar," it moves the shaded erea over to make a space for the scroll bar, but the scroll bar does not appear. There is only empty space there. It does not appear in either layout or browse mode. What in the world am I doing wrong! Please help. 1. I have a multi-user database. 2. Each user is limited to viewing only records created by themselves. 3. My problem is that i need each user to be able to search the whole database for a phone #, just to be able to find out if that phone # exists in the database. They don't need any other info from that record other than if that # exists in the database. 4. I have been using Filemaker for a couple of years now. Mostly learning things as I needed to. I realized the other day that I have not really used any type of naming system for filenames, table names or field names. My question is; is it appropriate to have field names or table names with spaces? Do I have to use an underscore instead of a space? Can I use a period in a field name? I am having trouble deleting 3 records in a related database. No matter what I try they will not delete. I have just switched to Filemaker 7 within the last two weeks and everything seemed fine after converting my Filemaker 6 databases until now. The 3 records are in a datebase called Wholesale Invoices. It has two relationships: Wholesale Invoices Line Items and Customers - Wholesale. I have checked the Wholesale Invoices Line Items database and there are no records relating to the Wholesale Invoice Database. This is what I want to do: Associate a record in a person table with one or more skills listed as records (each record has a single field with a skill name in it) in a skills table. Let the person enterring data select a skill and have it associated with the record in the person table record or add a skill if what they want is not there. Let subsequent users see the list of all skills including the added ones and do the same themselves. I would like a person record to be able to be associated with more than one skill. Hi all, im new in this forum and my english is not so fine, but I'll try to explain what happens as well i can do. I'm working in a fp7 file in which a script uses a replace function to change some word in a text field. Well the fact is that if the text field dimension is under 3800 chars (nearly) all goes fine. If the text field dimension is over 3800 chars(nearly) the resulting text is wrong (some replace are doubled, and the end of text is cutted). I have shipped my FM6 files to FM7 to test them. I have a script that opens a second file, creates a new record, fills in some blanks by lookup from file#1, goes to a field that is formatted as a pop up list, then stops. In FM6 the popup list would show, the user could choose from the list and continue on their own. In FM7, the cursor shows in the field, but the popup does not show. If I then manually click outside the field and then back in, the popup shows??? Am I doing something wrong here?? Greg Young

Ok, I know this has been discussed before. I thought this Menus issue would be resolved in V2. The Popup lists, in this system is sooooo incompetent. How could you have a reliable database where menues, and lists take 3-4 seconds each to pull. You'd better off actually using your pen and paper, or typing. If you have several popup lists on a page, you need a long time before you are done. Of course it is not my system, and I know that. This happens on 3 different PCs that I have all running Win. XP. I'm a beginner for Filemaker 7 and I have a question about using relationships. I have data in two different databases about a set of people each identified by an ID code. I want to combine them into one. So I set up the relationship between the databases to correspond the ID codes, and I make new fields in one of the databases and say to auto-fill based on the relationship. But it only auto-fills when I create a new record, and not for existing records. How do I do this for existing records?

Hi. I have find criteria that works when I input it manually, so I know there is matching data. When I place that criteria in a find step in a script it returns no records. I have a layout attached to my 'Trips' table. The one field on that layout is called 'BillToDropdown' and it is an edit list that pulls all client names from table 'BillTo'. In MS Access, the user enters data into a "form" (FM7="layout"); when you go to print the data/record it is typically done with the use of a "report". I know the FM7 equivalent is still a layout but I need advice on the nuts and bolts of that second layout. My example: layout 1A would be the "form" that the user enters the data. There might be many label fields that may just be instructional, like: "please don't forget to do this" or "these fields should be entered in this circumstance". Hello, Hope someone can help me: I have a backoffice system for travel agents. When itinerary is made I put reservation number for identification. When the invoice is arrived I search for the reservation number and then I run an automatic script with Replace function. But, here could it be a problem. I have been using PerformApplescript to change printers, and this seems to be working fine(I can see the printer change in the Printer Setup Utility) but when the Print dialog comes up, it stills reverts to the previous printer. I'm having some difficulty in finding the unique records in a joint table. I have a joint table that has two primary keys from two related tables where key1 and key2 are the primary keys in the related tables. Below is an example of a list of records in the joint table: Key1 Key2 A1 123 A2 123 A3 123 A4 456 A5 456 For example I wanted to find the unique record keys of Key2, what is the find do I need to get a return result of: Key2 123 456 I'm not too concerned of which value key 1 is returned in the find. Hello, This is driving me crazy, because I can't seem to find a solution to what seems to be an easy problem. I have a notes field that I have setup to be 4 line of text with a scroll bar. When you get to the end of the first line of text when typing it will go to the next line (works great). But if you are in the middle of a word when it needs to go to the next line, it will continue that word on the next line. How can I tell Filemaker if the last word on the line does not fit move it to the next line and so forth. This seems like it should be just a built in function. I can't seem to find anything in the help files regarding this. Thanks

I am a single user creating a medical database for myself. I have FM7 Pro but have been toying with the idea of getting FM7 Developer. I am wondering about the significance of the "enhancements" that looking at the filemaker website include "custom functions, file maintenance tools, script debugger, customized solutions, and creating standalone runtime applications". I think I will ultimately get it but I am curious if other users would recommend getting it ASAP or "whenever". I down loaded a plug in called MacExample that triggers events from a field and auto formats fields. I think I got this from cns, but i can't remember. My questions are: Is this a free plug in? Is is the same one that comes form developer? Can I use it on a network on more than one machine? I'm trying to print a report to include records in a range of dates in the "Send Date" field. Ideally I'd like the report to be for the week ending xx/xx/xxxx. Barring that, I'd like to have the user input the beginning and ending dates manually and perform a find based on the user input. I have set up a screen for the user to enter the date range like this "xx/xx/xxx...xx/xx/xxxx" but would like to find a tighter way of doing this as it is not intuitive and requires the user to be trained in what format to enter the date range in.

Hi all: The filemaker 7 trial for macosx doesn't install on my system. The installer stops with the error: "An error occured while reading the installer data. This installer appearsto be damaged. 1009:5, -43 File not found" I already did the obvious thing to do, which is download again, to no avail: the same error. How do you change pages on a multi page report with the status area on hide and lock? If I don't lock the status area I can use the CTRL + up or down, but if I lock the status area I can't use the CTRL key. Is there another way to use keyboard navigation with the status are on hide/lock? Is there something I can add to my script? I just don't want the user to click on the bottom left status button and possibly click on a layout in preview mode. It would cause problems. Thanks for all the help.

I couldn't find the search function tonight to search these forums to see if this has already be discussed and covered in another forum topic discussion here (did the search hyperlink get moved?) but anyway.... I have 75 relationships and I only want to use one at a time. The field used to link the file will always be the same for all found records. Is there a way to link to one specific file, of the 75, based on the found field without 75 differant layouts? I'm working out of one file with data for 75 stores. One field of all found records will have the store number. When I find all data for one store, I need to compare it to the file that is specific to that store. Larry

I've attached the file: join.fp7 log/pass: admin/admin there are 3 tables in this file: people groups group enrollments <--(the join table) 2 things aren't working.. 1. the Group Enrollments portal on the People table that should show which groups they are in is not displaying anything 2. the Groups value list on the Group Enrollments table will not list any values -- it doesn't seem to be working because I asked the value list to list the ID # field and also the group_name field... which I should be able to do.. right ? so that when the user is making an enrollment.. they'll know which ID correlates to which name. To review my database structure: I have created a database with one "main" table and several other "sub" tables that are linked back to the "main" table via a common field in the relationships screen. Hi Guys, I love the flexibility of the multiple window feature built into FMP 7 but am still getting to grips with using them. What I need is a function/method to determine which is the currently active window (the foreground window). I have looked at the Get(WindowVisible) function and its not quite what I need. I am a PHP/MySQL programmer. My boss has insisted that I use FM7 to create a webbased application. From my research on the web, I found that there is CDML tags that can be used with Web Companion in FM6. This functionality appears to be removed from FM7. Is this true? I have a script that prints, and i have it set to restore settings to a certian printer twice in the script because it randomly prints between 2 printers like it has its own mind. but it still does, it seems to print on 2 diffrent printers back and fourth, if I run the print script 1 time it will print on the wrong printer, I run it agian without changing anything and it prints to the right printer?? Not sure if this should post here or the IWP forum. Situation: databases are running under FileMakewr Pro 7.0v2 hosted on a G4 Mac running OSX server 10.2.8; clients use same FMP7 version on various Macs running 10.3.4 Have a set of databases (separate files) running on FMP7. One, our job database, references several other files, such as invoices, timesheets, etc and shows the relevant data in portals on separate layouts. This all worked fine under FMP6 and is fine under FMP7 across our internal network. However, none of the portal data shows up on IWP using Safari, Explorer (5.2); also, none of the summary fields based on the portal data appears. Have made sure…

Hello all! I have plan to rewrite my big 50 solution travel agency backoffice solution from FM5.0 to FM7 but after checking with Productive Computing and got the message that Filemaker dont let them have information so they can convert their Change Printer Plugin to work with FM7 I dont know if I should "upgrade". Normally I have all printers stored in one solution and let Change Printer use these information changing printer for each purpose. If a client buy a new printer, or have to replace of other reason, its easier changing the printer in one place instead of in every script. - How did you do? Do you use some other plugn-in? After installing FM Pro 7 on a Windows PC, I can't seem to get it to turn on the preference to show recently opened files -- whenever I try to check the box, I get the error "This command cannot be used by this installation of Filemaker" I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but that doesn't fix the problem. Has anyone else encountered this and found a workaround?

Is it now possible with FMP7 (dev) to allow a script's export settings to be saved without having to edit the script? (example, using it with a runtime) I have a solution that has export files that sometimes need what fields it exports to be adjusted. I'd like to be able to do this with a script. Set "LEARN" mode on. Perform the export, have it save the settings and turn "LEARN" mode off and work the new way forever more. Is this now possible? Thanks

I've created a little join table.. which tracks Committee Enrollments I have two other tables People and Committees Can an FP7 value list be called from the join table, but be auto-generated from the serial # fields from the tables I am joining. I thought this shoudln't be a problem.. but I tried it, and when I create a new record on the join table, the field which should show me the value list being generated from the other table generates no values. Ok, first off I am a noob to filemaker and using version 7 on a mac. I have a table with a bunch of patient info including patient ID which is unique. I have another table with the names and addresses of insurance companies which also has a unique ID. I want to be able to select an insurance company from that table and insert that information (without retyping) into the patient table where there is info for the insurance portion. Lets say Im trying to perform a find with a script, and I dont want it to find a field containing a pattern lets say i have a record with a full vin number but I want to search by the last 6 numbers of the vin, it wont let me, but if I search for the first 6 it does, any way for it to match up anything containing lets say Jft434 in the vin field??

In V6 I have a Pop-up with values from another file with the "2nd field" displayed and sorted by the 2nd field. During data entry, the user would enter the field, the pop-up would display and the user could enter the first few characters of the 2nd field and the value in the 1st field would be inserted into that field. In V7, when the user enters the 1st few characters of the 2nd field, the pop-up jumps to to a match based on the 1st field, not the 2nd field. An example would be a Product ID (1st field, and Product Name (2nd field). How can I get V7 to find Product ID based on pop-up showing Product Id and Product Name?

Here is something to avoid at all cost. When you create a table it creates a default relationship. If you delete a tables default relationship you will never be able to get to your data or use the table again. The warning that the program gives you when you delete a relationship only states this action will "break all items that use these tables...but will not delete the underlying tables or their data". DON'T believe it for a second. You will never be able to access your data or use the table again.

Having some difficulty with filtered value lists. I have a table holding "State" names, abbreviations, and countries (per record). I'm using this table as a value list feeder for other tables with those geographic designations. It was no problem setting up the first instance, in which someone first selects the country, and then the state abbreviation is filtered according to the country, so you get a list of state abbreviations only for the country already selected. I am making a multifile solution. For reasons I can't figure out, the Arrow-to-hand over a button feature on FM7 does not display even though this is checked on the appropriate menu. In most of the files this feature works fine but on a select few it does not. All files are relatively new and no settings have been changed. Any suggestion on where the problem might be? Is there a way to simply copy the full contents of a record to another table or file? What I want to achieve is, when a user clicks the delete button, the record is copied into a another table or file for me to review and restore records if necessary. I have been able to achieve it by setting up a related table using lookups etc, however I thought there might be a more elegant option.

I'm new to FM. First time using slide command. I have been able to get everything to slide into position the way I want except the layout won't decrease in size, therefore, the smaller records have a large amount of space at the end. I have a background color selected, don't know if this has any effect. I also added a bold line (which slides) at the end of the layout to show the separation of records. How do I fix this problem. after an exhausting morning on the phone w/ filemaker support, i have two different answers to this question: is the 5-user limit per database or per server? one guy told me that only 5 users (including the host) can be connected to the server at anytime. an hour later, a woman told me that i could have 5 users in each database. which is correct? thanks for your help.

I'm making a dbase to make tooling planification and to know the occupation time of my laser cutting equipement for each day of production. With previous versions of FM I put different functions into different files but with tables available within a single file, I am thinking about incorporating these functions into a single FM 7 file but in different tables, eg: phone book, check book, notebook etc. These functions would not be related to each other but since they are never going to max out the storage available, I figure, why make up several files when I can just design a single file with several tables. Using tables in this fashion makes field management a bit easier. For a networked solution, is there going to be a problem using multiple tables in a single file that are not related to each other.? …

I constructed a simple form for individuals to fill out over the web. I can tab through the fields in the right order, but when the form is published on the web, hitting the tab button does not follow the correct order. For example, after the 5th field, then the next tab is the 13th field. I have looked in the layout under "tab order" and everything seems fine. What have I done wrong? How can I fix it?

I have two tables (Customer Info and Invoice) related by customer number. I would like to make a button, etc. on a layout displaying Customer Info that when clicked will go to a layout for Invoices and CREATE a new record in the Invoices table. I have tried using "Go to Related Record", but it doesn't work unless a record has already been created in the Invoice database. Right now, I have to switch to the Invoice layout, type in the customer number to make this a related record and proceed. Is there a way to automate this? It would remove the error of entering the wrong cust number. Any ideas would be great. Thank you!

Is there a way to determine whether fields in a record have been changed other than leaving the record? I've looked through all the "get" functions and don't see one that will give me this information. This information has to exist as the program checks to see if there are changes in the record so that you can commit them when you leave the record. How do I access this as a user?

In FM5 I entered reports by scanning them onto a hard drive and saving the address in a FM7 containor field. This saves FM file space but the hard drive files are huge. I figure I can reduce the size of files by using an OCR solution to enter the document as text into a FM text file. Any suggestions for a good OCR that is easy to use with FM7? Thanks.

Hi All, I have just moved up to version 7 and am having a problem with graphics that are set to no fill and no stroke to be used as invisible buttons. I like to make my buttons in photoshop then use a basic graphic, like a circle, drawn in Filemaker with the fill and stroke set to transparent to be the actual button that triggers the script. However I've noticed in version 7 that the graphics end up with a stroke or a fill after clicking on them. In version 5.5 this didn't happen and I'm at a loss as to how to fix it. Is this bug in 7 or is there a work around? Thanks, Mark
