  2. I discovered a feature in OS X to greatly aid in the automated printing and post-processing of PDF's. If you do not know about PDF Services, a built-in feature of OS X, learn about it here: http://www.apple.com/applescript/print/ . Create a 'PDF Services' folder in your 'Library' folder. Any AppleScript application or alias files stored there can now be accessed thru the standard print dialog. The AppleScript can do anything you want with the resulting pdf file and does not need to know the name of the file or where is it located, because the file reference is passed to the script as a parameter. The beauty is that a reference to the AppleScript is saved in the …

Hello everyone. I've discovered that one of my served-up databases won't print or preview pdf's. A colleague's machine (G3 cube) running Jaguar instead my Panther creates them just fine... with a small difference that his machine invokes Adobe for the preview, while mine uses Preview for the preview. We're hosting using server and client versions 5.5. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks.

Ciao, this is my first post in this forum, so excuse me if I am doing/writing something wrong here (my enghish is very bad too). I have this problem: how can i pass data from a PDF form to a FMP 7 db? I found an example to do this in FMP 6 but once converted in FMP 7 it still works only to populate PDF form, not to edit and pass data back to FM. Probably something has changed in the way to submit data to the db from 6 to 7. Can someone help me to understand how to do this?

First off let me say I am working on a solution which must work on Mac and Windows XP. I would like to print a report/layout to a pdf file. I tried this by just doing a print and picking pdfWriter and the text is gobbley-gooky looking. The characters have been mutated (heh heh) to something else like russian looking text. Has anyone had this problem? What's the fix? looks great on the mac, but on windows it's like above. oh and on windows it's windows XP sp1 and Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Pro. thanks for your help in advance, sincerely, J__

After the file is saved, i want to send the file (a pdf) to someone via email as an attachment. - It has to work on Windows and Mac OS X. I like SMTPIt for email and it works on Windows and Mac. So, i think the mail attachment part is covered. Does anyone have any recommendations on products and/or techniques? thanks, sincerely, J__

In Mac OS X.3/FM 6: I have a layout that exists as four pages (the page setup for 44" in length). Preview only shows the first page with a "?" symbol on the "rolodex" -- when you click through the rolodex, the other (3) pages show up, "?" disappears and the four pages appear in a numbered order .... Accordingly, when the user tries to create a a pdf. via "print" > .pdf, the pdf only shows the first page of the four page layout. How can I correct this?

  9. I've got the Adobe PDF writer/distiller installed just fine. Due to the 111" layout restriction Filemaker has, I can only 'print' 10 pages (in FM) to one PDF file. Many of my files are over 10 pages, and I'm finding it inconvient to have 2 or more PDF files for one FM project. Is there a way I can merge these files together using a plugin, fancy scripting, or otherwise so that this can be done automatically inside of FM without having to merge them outside of FM?

Hello, I have several proprietary PDF files/forms that I would like to insert in a layout and populate the PDF fields with information that I have in different tables in Filemaker. What would be the best way to do that: a)Create a layout with the fields's position/size identical to the proprietary pdf form, fill the fields using a simple script and manually feeding the printed with pre-printed proprietary form. (VERY cumbersome) : Insert/Paste the pdf form in a layout and populate its fields with a script? Is it possible? c) Is there another way? or am I overthinking this? Thank you Pablo

I'm confused by PDFs in containers. If I have a pdf on my desktop and drag it into a container field, the file name shows up with a generic-looking icon supplied by Windows. If I double click it it opens the file in Acrobat reader. If I right click on the container field and insert a pdf file it appears as the Acrobat icon, but double clicking it has no effect. If I right click it and insert it as an object, it has the same effect as dragging it in from the desktop as described above. I can't get it to show up as an image at all, though reading other posts it seems like people are able to actually see the image of the 1st page of the pdf in the containe…

So far I have 7 files in a database. Each file has a PDF brochure assigned to it. When the user clicks on the graphic button on the file the PDF brochure opens. This works great. What does not work is keeping the PDF assigned to the proper file. When I use the specify button and assign the PDF script, it gets assigned to all 7 files. How do I get the PDF files to stay with the right file? Here is the steps I took. I made a script that calls the PDF, i.e. OPEN URL[No dialog;"C:Documents and settingsTASA UserPDF5400Saratoga.pdf. Then I specity the button on the file for 5400 Saratoga to perform script 5400 Saratoga. This works great. But when I go to another fi…

  15. Hi all, I have the following problem: when I generate a report and then save it as a pdf (in the printing dialog of mac os x, not pdf distiller), then I get a huge file -- around 3 mb for 10 pages of text ?!? -- and one that my printer refuses to print and preview can't seem to open. Acrobat can open it, but an attempt to run the "reduce file size" command leaves acrobat hanging and it, too, crashes. when I print the report using acrobat distiller, i get a smaller file size (around 350 kb -- still too big in my opinion), but many of the characters a garbled and the layouts begins to look wobly. is there anything i can do? anyone know the problem? best, civihis

Looking for real world experience. I need to scan a single page into PDF format and attach to a FMP structure. Sounds easy enough, heh?. What I would like to do is 1. Enter FMP 2. New Record 3. Hit a button to scan 4. Auto-Saves the PDF into the record Anybody aware of an off the shelf solution? Have any ideas on a solution? I have access to any scanner/ADF. I am just trying to cut out the "scanning in a separate program" and attaching the record to the file.

Hi, when I print to PDF, with a layout with 1 large merged field that flows over more than 1 page, the text is invisible. The text is not skipped so it must actually be there, because it creates 2 pages. Another time, it is just bad (see file attached). As a workaround, I can use text fields (not merged). But I need the merging because then I can set the line height to a proper size, so no lines are cut in half when text is flowing i…

Can anyone help me? All my schools reports (1800+) are generated in FM Pro 5.5 and printed off for parents - this works well and is much appreciated. However we are now placing them in secure 'files' on the internet in PDF format. They are distinguished, one from another, by a unique number which is in a field within each student's file. Is there an automated way in which the individaul file can be saved with this number as its file name? Thank you, Mike.

I am repeatedly printing to .pdf from FMU5.5 in Mac OS9. Each of these .pdf's have the same name, waiver.pdf, and I want each one to overwrite the previous one. Instead, the new file is renamed waiver.1.pdf, then waiver.2.pdf, etc. Anyone know how to get Distiller to overwrite the file? In the manual, it refers to exactly what I want as being in the Distiller options (Windows only). Why Windows only? What about us simple Mac folk? In FMP 6.0 on OSX, it overwrites just as I want it to, but that's not the machine I need it to work on. Both machines have Acrobat 5.0, and I didn't change any settings from installation on either one. What's the deal here?

My company uses custom Acrobat PDF forms to distribute project updates. I would like to tie these forms into my departmental FMP project database to maintain accurate updates and billings. The PDF's do not originate from FMP. Importing/maintaining constantly updated info is the main issue. Seems like a unique ID is needed - does Acrobat generate a unique form id? I would greatly appreciate any direction on how to bridge this gap. Hate to sound like a newbie - but I am - at least with Acrobat.

I'm still not sure if this is a FileMaker or Acrobat issue, but is seems that no matter what font I choose for the forms the resulting pdf's quality is sub-par. The reason I believe it to be FMP is that it looks fine when distilled on a Mac (OS 9.x), but poor when distilled on a PC (XP). Any suggestions?
