does anybody know, if soft wrapping is possible in filemaker. i would like to output a book directly from a huge database (that would be ao smart) but i can't find out how to do the wrapping. i even would buy some 3rd party software to do this. also nice would be an automatic wrapping tool in different languages.... thanks for any help. greetings from zurich in snow. roman.

Hi folks - Is there any way in FM 4.x to make the text formatting defined in Layout mode "stick: when pasting data into fields in Browse mode? I'm cutting and pasting contact data from emails received in Eudora into an FM database. Unfortunately, this text contains formatting (font, style, size, etc.) which persists when I paste from the clipboard into fields in my FM database. Is there any way to cause the formatting defined in FM to override whatever comes in from the clipboard? Thanks!

When I send an email from exchnage it put the html background in that I specified in the options. When exchnage is called from filemaker pro. It envokes the exchnage but no back ground template is envoked. Anyone know any fixes or how to call properly on script or 3rd party add ons which will solve this TIA Stubey

I just did a test with FM_ 5.5v2 on MacOS to a PS laser printer using a layout set to view as form, sliding up and reducing the sixe of the part, and with the Body part set to insert a page break before each record: when colate is OFF, each record prints X number of times -- so the output looks like r1 r1 r1..., r2 r2 r2..., r3 r3 r3... etc. If yours is doing anything else, first update your copy of FMP. Then check the options for your printer driver -- it may be responsible for this behaviour.

Hi, I've some strange printing problems. I created a column layout for printing with a general field, a sub-field and fields in the body with totals and sub-totals. So, in preview mode everything is fine and looks like that : General Field sub-field Field But if I delete some records for instance, I lost the display, and the printing, of the General field and sub-field. Interestingly, If I created another layout, like the one above, everything turns fine again, even for the corrupted layout !! In user mode, I can see all the fields without any troubles. I have recently begun using OSX a whole lot more, and I've found a problem using OSX with FMP 5.5; I have created custom label templates for shipping and mailing, and these have worked well across Mac & Win, but in OSX everything's off (lloks like it scaled smaller and justified slightly into one corner). I've noticed the same behavior in printing of other documents from other programs (AppleWorks, Word, etc.) where the same document prints differently in the different OS's. Hi - Could anyone help? I am using ebase thru Filemaker to send out a two page letter to about 100 records. I am having trouble finding a way to have the first page of each letter printed on letterhead - I can't print just odds, and the application will not recognize that each record gets a page one and page 2, so if I ask that the first page print from one tray and the reest from another, only the very first page of the first letter goes on letterhead, and all of the rest go on the regular paper - HELP! I know there must be some way to do this so that I don't have to print one at a time, but I can't find it. Thanks in advance for the help!

I created a script which searches the database, finds a set of records, say 10 records, then prints them. Works great no problem. If the user decides to later print say records 90 to 100 in a 100 record database the program remembers this last print request. Now if that same user uses the script to find and print, say the find finds 10 records matching the search, nothing is printed because the program is trying to print records 90-100 and there are only 10 records in the found set. I have created a program that runs in the FMPro 5.5 Developer in Kiosk Mode. I am looking for a qualified installer to place on the CD so my clients do not have to fiddle around with transfering data through the Explorer. I have created a database on a mac using os9.1. most all of the computers in my office use mac but i have two exceptions. One PC and one mac using OSX when I print on the pc and in OSX using the script that was created on the mac using 9.1 the page setups don't work and the OSX machine and the PC print two pages instead of one like all the other mac machines. Hi, I was wondering if anyone has a suggestion to the following problem: I created a Send Mail script in the server (FM 5.0 on MAC OS X) application which is triggered by a change in the field. It worked perfectly on mine and other user's client computers (PC's). I received a new computer, and, after installing FileMaker 5.5 on it, the Send Mail script will hang, and I have to abort the application (CTL+ALT+DELETE). This seems simple, but i can't get it to work. I have a database of orders from different customers. I would like to be able to print all of the orders for a particular day sorted by the sales rep who took the order with a page break for each sales rep. So if i had 15 sales reps, i would wind up with 15 pages - one to give to each sales rep with only their orders on it. Any suggestions?

I have read in a different post that filemaker running on PCs don't really support WYSIWYG. I have a problem with lining up the fields where they should be. I am trying to mix the fields in with a regular text and the field jump around to different places depending on what scale I am viewing them at. Also they print in the wrong spots. I have a school auction catalog of about 150 items that I would like to print in half page, folded book form on 8.5 x 11 paper. I'm can't figure out how to set it up so that the even numbered pages print on the left and odd on the right PLUS how to get page 1 and page 99 of the catalog to print on the same sheet of paper. We have been running FM Pro for years, mainly on Macs without many issues. We are slowly migrating to PCs and are having a lot of printing problems that I suspect are probably driver related. Many of our layouts must be scaled in order to print on a single page (80%, 90%, etc.). This scaling amount was defined in the page setup when the FM Pro print script was defined. As long as printing is done via the script, the scaling and other print parameters are supposed to be retained. All printers are postscript capable and therefore have scaling capabilities. Working on FMP 5.5 and W2K I have a problem with a calculation field containing "daily_result". In printpreview the data in this field looks/is correct but when printed the data in this field changes. This change is only on the paper and NOT in the field of the record. for example: In one record "daily_result" shows 3.233,4114598 (Euro) in browsemode and also in previewmode. But when printed the field changes and there will be 3.233,509989 (Euro) printed in this field. This print is made from the same layout, so is cannot be a different field that gets printed. Long time since I've been on board, been busy building dbases Now I've come across a problem I can't seem to find an answer to. I've got a sheet of paper (Size A4) with 8 labels on, two rows of four. They're sticker labels. Do I need to script on which label the printer should print ( left top row/right top row, left second top row etc etc) And if the answer of this question is "yes" how would this script look? Hello... I have a database that is approaching 350,000 records. Once a month, I need to generate bills to my clients. Some of these clients bills can contain up to 2,000 records. The problem I have is the time involved in waiting for my summary report, sorted by company name, to summarize the monthly totals for all companies! I have heard there is another method to this madness that greatly reduces the time for summarizing and subsequently printing the report?? Did I hear correctly and can someone pass on this wisdom to me.... Thanks!

My database has an item's sold file tied to an overall invoice file. I have some very nice printed invoices by windowing a portal along with summary fields. However, I am baffaled on how to gather this same information to compose an email invoice. Any suggestions? Roger

You could run a script that finds the record, duplicates it 9 times, prints, then deletes all but one copy of the record. HTH, Dan

Dear all, This forum seems closest to answer my question, I was not able to find the exact forum for index output question. How can I either copy and paste, or print out the contents of the whole index. For instance, to find out what kind of data is in the field i would press Cnrl+I while my cursor is in the field, and the Index dialog box comes up. How do I print it out? FileMaker 5.5 won't print from selected pre OS X databases when running under MacOS X. It goes through the motions of printing, with a status bar, etc, but then never sends the info to the printer or the preview app. Other pre-OS X databases print fine. Printer is Canon S600 using driver supplied by Apple MacOS X. The only difference I can see so far is the fact that the databases that won't print use custom made layouts, and the ones that do print use a FileMaker template. Could this be the reason? I'm a Mac guy and know little about windows, but on I'm working on a client/server DB using FM Server 5 and mostly Macs. One computer is a PC because it is connected to a tractor-feed printer making bills of lading. This machine also prints out on another printer. And I want it to be the one dialing out to fax clients. I have figured out how to get all of my data in, but now I need to print reports and I'm screwed. 3 files- Lists Line_Items Notes Multiple line_items for every list, and multiple notes for every list. I need to print a report that shows the items from the lists file as well as every record in line_items that has a matching list_ID and every note in Notes that has a matching list_ID. This sounds like it should be easy, but when I set up the report I can only get the first line item and the first note. I need to print all items for that list. Hi guys, I'm trying to print our a copy of each entry screen to insert into a manual and I am using a PC not MAC. I want to print screen really but, my entry screens are beyond the A4 Layout grid which would normally not be a problem because these entry screens are never printed until now. I've tried going into print setup, properties, properties and getting it to shrink to fit page A4 and I've tried changing print size % down to 60% and I've changed orientation to LANDSCAPE but it still crops off the last bit of what I see on a full screen. I had some buttons at the top of the layout to add a new record, and delete etc. Is there a way that I can have these buttons be excluded from the printed version? other than creating a separate layout with a ascripted button that switches you to it and prints and then switches you back....? I have developed a document, per a customer request, that is 11x17. My computer is connected to a hp8150 which supports this size paper. When going to print the size does not appear in the paper size menu. Nothing is available in the size I need. Any ideas here. When I attempt to run a print script in the form generator from one of the other databases, I find that it will perform all the tasks in that script, but will print the layout from the database I originated the command from and not the forms generator. Hello, I'm running a OS 9.2.1, FMP 5.5v1, and printing to an HP 5000. I am bringing ads from an art department into FileMaker, storing them as a reference only, in order to print proof sheets for the client. The ads are created in QXPress and saved as an eps (using an extension that embeds the font info). The picture field takes up most of a page and is more than large enough to hold the ads. The field is formatted to crop the image to fit the frame (so there shouldn't be any change of size) and the alignment is centered. Page setup is letter at 100%. I would try to get an updated printer driver from the web, install it, restart, then be sure the desired printer is set as default printer (so that page setup uses it). Then open FM and go into layout mode to adjust the layout, checking against preview mode as you go along.

I don't want to waste the space with the body part being too large and only containing one line of information. I have recently upgraded from running FMP4.1 in OSX/Classic to FMP5.5 in OSX(10.1.1). The transition has gone surprisingly smoothly except for printing. Under the old system (FMP4.1 in OSX/Classic) my logo which is an imported PICT was blue. Now it prints purple. Has anyone run into this? Or better yet found a solution, I imagine this has something to do with OSX's Colorsync'ing. I have messed around with the OSX Colorsync control panel but it doesn't seem to change anything.

I set up a simple flat-file database in one layout, then added a new layout for use with Avery labels. The problem I encountered was that not all of the records showed in the Avery Label layout....anybody got any ideas? Bob

Greetings, I am working on a database solutiuon designed to store and ease report production for a local law enforcement agency. When printing out "the case report", one of the fields is a narritave that can either be one paragraph or in some cases, pages in length. While a scroll bar works well for inputting, I am having difficulty finding a way to have FileMaker compensate for the potential field length differences on the hardcopy printout. Any ideas?

You might have to detect which machine you are on and use two different print layouts. I have found WYSIWYG to be less than accurate on the PC platform. I've solved this by moving things around until they work. The screen won't accurately reflect how the printed output will appear. I have found WYSIWYG to be especially poor with HP inkjet printers on the PC. If someone has a better trick, please let us know. -bd

Need a little more information: 1) What is each label? An address label? A product item label? 2) What are you printing them on? A 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of labels? A Seiko/Dymo/CoStar label printer? In general, you can't do this with the "copies" selection in the print dialog box, you must duplicate labels using other means. -bd

I have a field for the body of the text which allows me to put a personalised greeting at the top, i.e. "Dear" & Firstname & "please check out our website" However, when I execute the script, Filemaker generates only one email, with multiple recipients, so they all get a mail saying Dear Geoff (or whatever the firstname of the first record is), rather than the firstname of each record What I'd like is Filemaker to produce one email per record. We've been using FM fora few years now just recently upgraded to 5.0. Everything has been working fine. Bought a new HP 2100 in September and towards the end of October started having this problem. In one particular layout the text box doesn't print completely. It cuts out portions of sentences, partially completed letters. For example ... include principle ivestigator (PI). Recently our network printer has been changed from a HP LaserJet to a Xerox DC230 (DC probably means DocuCenter). With the LaserJet we've been printing without problems for about 2-3 years. Is there a way to send PLC 5 Escape Sequences such as Offset, 'Esc&L1T' to a printer from FMP? The printer I am using is a Xerox 4525 and I need to 'Offset' the output before I print each Table of Contents so that it is easy to seperate each 'book'in the output tray. I'm using FM5.5 Server (MAC) and FMPro 5.5 (MAC and PC's). My problem is inconsistent printing between buildings. When printing from my PC, the layout prints perfectly - rather it is for 1 page or multiple pages. When printing from another building (using PC's), it cuts off the last 2 or 3 lines on page 2. i have a file with 80,000 records. i have a layout in which each record takes up 1 page. I would like to print to file multiple files in sets of 10,000. . . when i print to file a page range message says that it must fall between 1 and 9999 even though it has 80,000 pages in the file. . . is this just a filemaker bug? or is there something i've missed. thanks. jeremy

I'd like to provide a way for users to enter a text title or comment that prints in the header of a report. layout Ideally, it would be a field that they simply clicked into and entered text. I've read in a FM textbook, that FM doesn't support Outlook on Macs and, surely enough, I cannot send any email. Hi all I have already setup a FMP database to keep track my bank checking account. And I tried to figure out how to print the route and checking number that display in the bottom of the check. No matter how large I make the field in layout, when I preview or print, only the first line of each field is shown - the rest of the data is chopped off. How can I tell it to expand the field vertically as needed? When I export data into an html table and upload it to my website, it does all of this automatically. We have recently changed from Macs running Filemaker 4 to PCs running 5.5 on Windows 2000 platform. I suspect that a change in 5.5 has caused a problem with one of the summary fields or to the script used to print Receipts when payments have been entered. Has anyone else experienced this problem with 5.5?

Hi all, I've got a problem with printing from an application. Because of a calculation the print-out will be Times only (and can't be changed according to the developer. I have changed the font in regedit from Times to Verdana, and it prints Verdana. Cool! No I would also like to change the fontsize (it's a very large 12 points now). Does anyone know how to do this? When we use Filemakers mailto function, it changes an ampersand (&) in a field to & in the email that is sent. Any ways around it?

hi all, i've set up a printing layout with a merge field for the text which can be quite large so i've expanded the field for 3 pages. however, when i print, whether through a script or menu, it will print all records on one page unless the the field contains about 20 lines. less than that it prints each record indivually, as it should. it' slides fine in layout and on the printed page but i just can't figure out why it's printing all records on one page when the text field has less than a certain amount of space used. i've removed the scripts, deleted them, made a new page with new scripts and the same thing, even using the menu print command. page setup is stand…

This is why it's important to have some lines of communication between the graphic designer and the database developer, so that someone doesn't rush ahead and do something that no one else can work with. Actually, as databases go, Filemaker's layout features are pretty good. But, it is a database, not a page layout program. It has limitations. One of them is that it doesn't handle headers that run down the side of the page. It's kind of difficult to discuss layout issues without an accurate picture of what you are trying to do. We are using FMKR v2.02 for Mac because it is has the features that we need! We have devised a two-page letter form and we want the first page of each record to print on letterhead and the second page of each record to print on plain paper. When we send the job to either of two HP PostScript printers and ask for all pages to be printed as described, only the first page of the entire run is on letterhead. If we ask for page 1 of all records being browsed to be printed on letterhead, only the first page of the first record is printed (on letterhead)--no other pages are printed. Hi there, I regularly print appr. 5000 address-labels, on paper-format DIN A4, 3 columns, each column 7 labels, so per page 21 labels. On ANY printed page ALWAYS the 20th label contains an empty line between name and address. There is no data missing, so only on the 20th label lines 2, 3 and 4 are shifted down 1 line, the first line is OK. All other labels are OK. Has anyone a suggestion? We have a few databases and a problem has just arisen that I'm sure we haven't had before--> We have a layout (a letter) with 2 pages to it. I have done a find and there are two clients in the found set. I want to print just the first page of the letter for BOTH clients. I go to print and choose 'Records being browsed', and then choose Print Range pages from 1 to 1. The only thing that prints off is page 1 for the first client/record. I have spoken to FM support and they have suggested that it could be the print drivers, which I doubt very much as it is occuring on every computer, and on every printer! HELP - PLEASE!!!!

I am using a Mac connected to a HP 4si printer via ethernet. I have a layout that prints info from several different fields in a horizontal line, so my body setup is very small and has a leading grand summary. This layout was orginally made on Filemaker Pro 3 and converted to 4. It was orginally setup as view as list (but I see no such labling in 4). When I print, it is supposed to each record in a horizontal line, then print the next record. It does this, but when it gets to page 2 and higher, the print is sliding up or down the page so that some records are getting cut off. Howdy! Is there no plug-in or any kind of feature to print out to a booklet layout (like PM booklet plug-in)? Right now the directory we output is in 8.5x11 then the photo copy place shrinks it down to 1/2 up which makes it too small and messes with the margins...any suggestions. OR what's the easiest way to export (w/ related records) for use with PM 6.5?

Aloha. As stated, I have no skills with FMPro. We setup a really lame, flat-file form just for data entry to track boxes that are then sent to a storage company. It has Client Name, Box Number, Date and then a description of contents. The problem is that the last column, left to right is the dexcription of details, which may have 5 or 6 lines of information in there. The problem is that when we print this form, each row seems to be single spaced based on the first column which is the client id, instead of waiting until the last row, where there might be 5 or 6 lines of info. So, if there are several lines in the last column, and the next row is only one space below…

Folks Here is a tip, not a question. this morning a client of mine asked me to look at a layout in their db (I didn't create the db, but I am completely revising it). The label layout was printing OK, down first then across in three columns, but one record would "disappear" at the end of each column. Weird. I thought at first the client was confused and the labels weren't printing right, lke mis-alignment or something. I went to have a look and assumed it was a print driver problem, since it was on a Windows machine and the client reported that they had the problem but another user on a different machine did not. I have a header in a layout which I don't want to print. I have selected all the objects in the header and set the "do not print selected objects" in the sliding/printing dialogue. However, when I preview, there is still a blank space where the header would be. How do I eliminate this blank space so that I can fit more on a page? thank you -wald

You can type HTML tags into text fields, sure, but FMP won't render them. You'll have to export the data to a file and fiew them in a browser.

Has anyone attempted/succeeded in creating a script that translates various filemaker fields for transmission using the Windows Fax application? Example scripts greatly appreciated. Thanks.
