Importing & Exporting

Getting data in and out of FileMaker.

  1. Started by oilman,

Hi all Read a thread about keeping your information in a different db then the input db and thought i would try this. I made a clone of my db and deleted all records in the clone and tried to import the information back in from the orginal. I removed all relationships in the clone db. About a quarter of the data is not import. Since the db is an exact clone, any ideas why this is happening. Using FM6. The import is done manually. Thanks Lionel

Hello all: Ok, this question is not about FM, it's about Excel. I have three fields in my FM file for phone number. I am going to import recs from an excel spreadsheet into it. The phone nums are in 1 column. So I did text to columns/fixed width and parsed it into three columns. But it keeps stripping out the lead zeroes. I checked everything, does any know EXACTLY where to go and change this? Thanks Ken

  3. I am searching for a way to mark imported records. My problem is that my users must import records but sometimes they do it wrong and i end up with new records from another file. Is there a way to flag the records that have been imported : with the username of the person who dit the import and possibly the filename of the file the records are from. Also, the auto-enter option must not be used because it modifies the imported records and they are not usable after. I am new to filemaker so maybe there is an easy way to do this but i haven't found it to this date. Thanks

I am very new to FM and databasing, so please forgive my terminology if incorrect. I have many flat files with nothing more than email addresses within them. First, I would like to import them into FM. Secondly, I would not want any duplicate entries; but instead, a column in the database which tells me how many times that specific entry was attempted to be imported. Example: ([email protected]) is on files 'A, B and C'. When I import file 'A', it would added ([email protected]) to the 'Address' column, then put a number one in the 'CountImport' column. When I import file 'B', it would see the email address already is there and not add add to the database, but in…

I would like the script to append and not overwrite any previously existing records on Master.fp5. I have found the "Export records" script command and have set it to preform without dialog but the script fails because it says there were no fields selected for export and of course if I leave the dialog in and select the fields by hand (which is something I can't do for this script) any previous values in Master.fp5 are overwritten. Anyone have any suggestions for getting around this? I am having serious problems with Developer 5.5v2 and importing tab text fields into a FMP database. The files appear but are not accessible. I believe this has something to do with the OSX filing system and fmp......the bug makes using OSX native runtimes worthless for me. I need the ability to script an import of the text file (works great in OS9 and Windows). One option I could do is a converter db (when running in classic) that changes the text file to a .fp5 file. I would RATHER not do this (clumbsy) but I am at a loss otherwise......even doing a copy and paste deal with text edit doesn't seem to work.…

I finally built the ODBC link today between filemaker and our accounting software. I'm pleased at how easy it was. Ultimately, some of the filemaker data is going to be updated with data coming from the accounting software. Let's say that I can capture all the information that I am interested in, and the import works. How can I have this import run, say, once a day at midnight, or something similar? I'm guessing there is going to need to be multiple imports (as well as exports, eventually from filemaker), and running them manually is going to get old real fast. What's my first step?

How do I to split one field ("repair actions") into different records. The field contains sentences separated by a paragraph mark. Every sentence has to become one record. What is the correct formula to do this? To me it looks hard because every sentence contains a different number of words. To make it even harder I'd like to take along the value of a keyfield ("IDService") in the new record. So what I need is a record per sentence with the fields ("repair actions" - 1 sentence) and the according key field ("IDService"). But maybe you know the right way to do it. Thankyou for reading and eventually answering this question.

We produce a printed catalog 3-5 times a year (usually with 800-1200 lots), taking the text from FileMaker to MS Word to PageMaker to produce the material for the printer. Short of going into every field that has the blank spaces at the end of the text, is there a way to clean up these spaces globally? 67. Help! I am looking for a way to either export multiple associate text strings from a single text field that are associated with a unique contact Id number. I the past I have used a single field to first put in a date of communication with a person then the call notes associated with that date. Over time of course this single text field has become rather bulky, plus I can not do simple searches in the field for specific dates or ranges of dates. What I am thinking now is that I should have a relational database called Call Logg which has a relation to the unique contact id number and fields such as date of the call, time, call notes, and other important information. …

  72. Hi, We have the situation where people back at base need access to an FM db (on a LAN server). People need to record into the FM db on their standalone tablets 'out in the field' and come back to base and get that data back into the Central DB. There could be one or many users 'out in the field', so I'm not sure about merging two or more FM DBs back into the Central DB, or whether each 'man in the field' takes out a copy of the Central DB and they all get merged somehow back at base. I'm putting the finishing touches on a solution that will soon be for sale. One of the last items I'm putting into it is an update routine that will allow users to download an updated version, click a button and automatically have their existing data pulled into the new version. I wrote something similar years ago, but with a major difference: I was the one performing the update, so I could manually do some of the tasks. Here's what I did: 1) Give the new version of the files a different name, i.e., MainNEW.fp5. 2) Place the new version of the files in the same directory as the old version. 3) Click the update button in the new files.

Manually dragging Field Names can easily overshoot to the top or bottom of the list, causing a displacement havoc. To align the import of the >80 Field Names into my file required over 3 hours by dragging. Given -- 1] Can't change data source Field Names, 2] must not change data target Field Names, and 3] must easily & quickly move Field Names manually.
