Hello, I just bought Developer and everything seems great, except than when I do a stand alone or kiosk I get no window frame and a completely black background. Everything that should be inside a window frame is there and functioning well. I've read and reread the help and done lots of trial and error. Thanks.

Using FMD 5.5 on PC ME O.S., In the process of building my Filemaker application I used external scripts. The script call has embedded the IP address of the machine I used to create the application. 'Perform Scipt[subscripts,External:"TestA.FP5(10.15.15.3)"]' No matter how I chose this external Script, with 'Save relative path' checked or unchecked it still maintains the IP address. Further if a runtime solution is created, the RTS shows exactly the same address, if opened with filemaker. When the solution is now installed on a different network, it is looking for the IP address of the machine associated with the file, which is considerably slowing down …

I imagine this has been asked a couple of times but couldn't find a clear answer Essentially will FMP Developer Tool 5.0 bind files created under FMP 5.5 complete with 5.5 features to create runtime solutions. Or do I have to get FM Developer 5.5. The reason for asking is I have only had Developer 5.0 for a bit over a year and this is a "hobby' at this stage. Some of the features in FMP 5.5 look appealing.

I have FMD-5 and FM Server-5. I ran a dB thru FMD to create a kiosk-mode app (i.e. no menues, status bar, tool bar, legend, etc.). In other words, an app that runs full-screen. It works great with the runtime, but the menues and stuff come back when I open it with Server 5.0. Is this normal? Is there a way around it? Will 5.5 allow it? thanks.

I am unclear about the Save a Copy As script set. I want to create a backup copy script for my runtime. Right now it saves a copy of the file with a .fp5 extension. But the files in the runtime are .USR And what about the soultion.EXE - how can I save a copy as a backup.

Hi I have purchased a copy of FM 5.5 Developer (5.5v1 on Windows 98) - all works fine until I want to use the CDML tool - when I try and use it it keeps coming up with an error saying field not able to be modified and then does not work at all, even when I try to close the tool it comes up with the same error about six times, someone please help me. I have tried to access the CDML tool via the CD, and also copied it to the FielMaker folder in my program folder - still no luck - please help. And yes I can CDML without it I just have so much to do it makes life a little quicker to start the projects. Thanks Greg

I am aware that bound runtime solutions cannot be networked, with the current developer editions. But what I was needing to know was can a bound runtime solution access a remote FileMaker DB via either FM Server or TCP-IP. I want to develop a program to that will allow other individuals to access this remote DB and download ( import ) data from it into their runtime solution. Thank you. Graham

I use Developer on the PC. I burned my solution files onto a CD using Adaptec Direct CD with my HP CD-writer 8200. Here's what happens: 1. I make sure the .usr files are not set to "read only" before I burn the CD. Then I burn the solution files onto a CD. 2. I take the new CD to a different computer and install the solution folder on the hard drive and eject the CD. 3. The newly copied .usr files are always set to read only. The files won't work until I change the .usr file properties to deselect "Read Only." My experience with CD burners is limited to this one application, but this doesn't sound normal to me... Is this a common occurrence when copying Developer fi…

Okay, I am new here and you guys appear to be the experts so I bow to you for help! I have been working on a cross - platform database for a year now. I orignally created it on a Mac (FM Developer 4). To go cross-platform I have Virtual PC 4 with the 5.01 upgrade running on mac OSX (also 9.2 for that matter). On Virtual PC I have several virtual machines setup with different windows versions: 95, 98, 2000, NT4.0, XP Pro. Along with the latest version of "additions for windows". So, you can see that I am serious about cross platform compatibility. My runtime solution is comprised of several files which need to access each other using scriptmaker and perform scripts back …

Hey, all! I just have some simple questions that Im sure you guys can answer. I made a solution using FM Pro 5.5. However, I wanted to disable many features (such as view mode) so that the users cannot tamper with the layouts and such. I heard that FM Developer is what I needed. I was just looking for some general information that makes Developer different than regular FileMaker. In addition, I was wondering if there was a way that one can disable the big FileMaker window that comes up when you start the program. Or, to be even more inquisitive, is there a way to put my own customized window up when the program starts? I suppose I should ask this question in one of the …

I am developing a runtime solution that has many files that will be bound, but only three or four that require backing up. I have created a script that makes a copy of three files with the Troi File plugin. I have set it up to close each file and make a copy of each which is stored in the backup folder--none of these files are the primary runtime file. From what I understand, only the primary file can be replaced without rebinding if the code has been modified. Does this apply to exact copies of the originally bound files? That is, can I set up a script with the Troi plugin that will replace the original files with the backup files? Importing would be the other alt…

Hi experts! I have been spending some considerable amount of time solving this solution. One of my relatives owns a cyber place with about 12-15 computers, i would like to come up with a solution that would track the amount of time a client takes to use the computer based on payment given and automatically set up a warning alarm when the time's expired. I'd like to have filemaker assign unique codes randomly from one main computer to clients who'll have to input valid codes(in a dialogue box that sets itself on each comp.) to gain any kind of access to the computer. I posted the same message a while back, but thought I would try again since I've been able to do more testing. I have a customer running Win 2000, service pack 2. She installed the runtime solution on a Compaq, and it works just fine until she executes a script that opens a second file. The machine freezes, and she has to recover both files. The same solution works fine on her Win 98 machine. I sent a second CD with the solution, but she still has the same problem. I tested the solution on a Win 2k running SP 1, and while it was slow accessing the second file, it was OK otherwise - no system freeze. I bought a new Win 2k machine with SP 2, installed the same runtime sol…

Is there a way to get the computer's serial number, owner, IP address, etc. and store it into FMP? Client called today asking if I could create a networked DB that automatically logs all of their company's computer information (both Mac and PC). Internal system serial number would be very helpful to my client. Other aspects seem straight forward through filemaker (i.e., IP address and Disk can be called through Troi or equivalent plugin--this plugin doesn't read serial number unfortunately). It seems like a plugin or scripting (Applescript and VBA possibly) would be required. I would like to avoid the Applescript/VBA route if possible. Any thoughts?

Hello my FM experts! I'm creating a cross-platform runtime solution. I thought initially that I could have one file that is cross-platform. So far, I haven't found a way to do that, and the developer book is no help. So, I bound my files on windows, then on mac. Now I have two nice runtime apps, one for pc & one for mac. They run fine UNTIL I write them to a CD-ROM. Maybe I'm just doing something wrong there. The PC version runs wonderfully! The Mac doesn't recognize my mac version (after it's on the CD) and errors out when I open it, saying it doesn't recognize the file. I added ".fp5" to my mac runtime. I wrote the disc with Adaptec Toast, ISO 9660 format…

Hi. I have made runtime version of database using FM 4.1 and Developer 4.0 version 1. The database needed to be used by a number of people on a NON networked setup so I duplicated the base about 8 times. Obviously a clumsy way to go especially when updating data from all machines, but this was done to one source and refreshed back to the individual bases. This is largely done manually as I wasn’t going to spend the time automating until I was happy that they would use it. Well they love it and want to now access the same copy at the same time, but are still not ready to network their entire system. They access each others machine via a LAN 1. I want to put one c…

The "runtime" is nothing more than a special version of the Filemaker application, which is limited in functionality and tied to a particular set of database files. There is no more harm or benefit in opening it first, than there is in opening the Filemaker application first. From a support standpoint, I always used to have my file in a folder inside of the main installation folder. I then had the installer put an alias/shortcut in the main installation folder along with readmes, licensing and such files. This way the user never really even saw the actual database files.

I apologize if this has been posted before! Does anyone know the compatibility between FileMaker 4.1 files and a runtime solution created in Developer 5x? example: Can exports from a FM 4.1 solution be exported and then imported into a RunTime solution (created in FMD 5x, OK to import, etc.)? I am guessing the answer is yes, given that FM can import older FM files (save a copy in OLD format create new format), BUT what about export files from the RunTime solution and importing them into a FM 4.1 solution? Is it possible? Thanks for any input, I havn't needed to use Developer so I don't have a lot of knowledge on its functionality. [ November 15, 2001: Message edit…

Hi I've developed a number of FM applications over the years, but have never had to get one compiled yet. Now I need to do so. I know exactly what I want the application to do within FM and I have to hand it over to a developer to do the runtime, However, I have no idea how to "prepare" my application for that process. I don't want to hand it over and find (at $150 an hour) that there are things which need to be done before it can be compiled, and which I could have done myself if someone had only told me. Where can I find this information pease? Regards

Hi Whilst not a developer (that is, I don't own the developers package)myself, but a reasonably good "dabbler", I know that my question is for you professionals. If I design an application and get someone to compile that into a standalone runtime version, what happens if the end user gets a data corruption? ie, the sort of thing that I would use "recover" for in the uncompiled version. Has anybody played extensively with the new script debugger in FM Developer? It looks like a really nice tool but I noticed two issues that make it a bit unreliable. First, the step "ToggleWindow (Hide)" is not executed if the debugger is running. Second, if a subscript is being executed in a seprate file, its window often remains hidden instead of being brought up front, as it is supposed to be. I also noticed that the debugger sometimes has problems finishing a loop, but I have to investigate this problem a little more. BTW, I am running it in OS X 10.1.

I have a solution bound on PC for PC. When using the Runtime Solution, the first time I try to run a script that creates a related record, I get an error message that says the (Primary file) cannot be found. After I select the right file, it works fine. I suspect that this has something to do with the file extension. (I used the default). If I don't remember to create a new related record in the runtime before delivering it to users, they are confronted with the error message, which means nothing to them. Would using a different file extension help? I tried using .fp5 but was told that is reserved for FM.

I have a runtime solution with 2 files. The main file has a script that opens the second file, finds and deletes all records, and imports records from the main file. This script works great on machines running Win 95 and 98. On the Win 2000 machines, the main file works fine, but freezes the machine every time this open/find/delete/import script is activated. We also tried to reinstall the runtime solution on a new Win 2000 machine, in case there were other software conflicts, but get the same result. Is anyone aware of Win 2000 confl…

Hello, Can anyone tell me about the development tool to change database names.... Will the tool change field definitions, scripts and relationships? In the past, i have manually changed a file name and the other files could not find it without changing the above. I am using fmserver 5 with 5.0 clients Thanks, Kerrin

My clients are telling me that when they attempt to use my 5.0 runtime program on a computer using Microsoft professional XP they get the following message; "unable to locate DLL (dynamic link library). The same runtime program runs fine on Windows 95, 98 and 2000. Does anyone know how to solve this problem.? Thanks Bob Sherman

Can run-time solutions import and export? If they can, I may be able to get my boss to pay for a copy of Developer. That'd sure be swell.

I am in the process of developing several run-time applications for my school district. The users will have their own run-time application. The principals view and possible comment on the data after viewing it. How can this process be simplified? How can it be done? If each principal has a run-time application can he/she copy the database from each of the teachers, edit the data, and then copy it back in their folder. Is the database file in a run-time application an independent file? Thanks, Evan P.

Hi I know the Filemaker site advises that Developer solutiosn are not networkable, but if you develop a solution and then have it opened by Filemaker on an FM Server - will that then make it networkable? Thanks Greg

I haven't seen any opions expressed here on the Developer 5.5 preview released to DevCon attendees. Could any of FM Forums moderators or others who got a copy present their feelings on the new version? Also, is there any word yet on what an update from v5 will run?

I have been a frustrated user of Analyzer 2 from Waves in Motion, as members of FM Forums have no doubt learned from previous rants. It promises a lot but I have found it to be unreliable, badly documented, and designed with an interface that varies from vague to baffling. At the opening of DevCon WIM offered their new and improved Analyzer 3 on their web site as a public beta. I downloaded it, hoping to wring it out and see if they have addressed any of the problems I have bitched about, both in this forum and to Waves In Motion. Typically, documentation was non-existant (too busy preparing for DevCon was the reason cited). What they neglected to explain was that altho…

we have a serious need for the "set next serial number" scriptstep feature in 5.5 but we are distributing by october 1. i assume that if we bind in dev 5.0 we can't use that script step ? if this is the case, are we sure that it will work when bound in dev5.5? and finally, any word on when exactly we'll get dev 5.5 ? thanks, jodin

Hi, I am using FileMaker Developer 5 but I don't realise it enhance anything in design FM database. It's wasting my time as I often change layout apperance, when I change the font or color, I've to go to every layout and every database to make the same small change all manually. Is there anyway to work filemaker layout design like the way Macromedia Dreamweaver does? Dreamweaver able to use a template to update all web page automatically. Thanks, Damon

Hello, My solution just acquired some plugins which I've got working as needed. When I spool up the files with the developer tool, they're gone. What I've read suggests that plugins can travel with runtime solutions. Tried putting the .fmx's in the runtime folder. Tried putting them in the system folder of the developer tool. Nothin so far. Application preferences shows an empty roster for plugins. FMDev5 w/98. Thanks, Bill

Scenario: I insert an object into a container field as a link and displayed as an icon. I double click the icon in browse mode -- nothing happens. It is just a MSWord document and I have the application on my computer. I can double click it in layout mode and it opens seamlessly and I can right click it in layout mode and it opens seamlessly as well. Does anyone know why the application won't launch from browse mode? Any suggestions? Thanks J-

I just ordered a copy of Filemaker Developer earlier this evening and I just wanted to ask a question here to clarify one thing. It's my undersatnding that to produce a Macintosh runtime solution you need to run your files through the Developer on a Mac machine and likewise is true for a Windows. To make a solution a Windows based runtime solution you need to produce it from a Windows platform otherwise the .dlls and other stuff doesn't get included. Am I correct?

Creating runtime in Kiosk mode (in windows), makes it a hassle for user to access other pgms, as user is forced to mess with ALT/TAB keys to get to other programs, and a novice user would probably find it difficult to get back to the desktop. Therefore, I am opting to scrap Kiosk mode, and create regular Runtime versions. I know that a customized Help and renaming of Script Menu heading can be done, but can any of the other standard FMP Menu selections be customized, in addition to the runtime feature of "Permanently prevent modification of database structure"? Basically, I would like the user to be restricted to the maximum (as in Kiosk mode) with a fully customized ma…

The Developer Tool will create your bound solution with an EXE file that should be used to start the application, and 1 file for each file in your solution. In addition, it will create a bunch (approx 12-20) DLLs that must be included in the same directory as your solution. If you are using any plugins, you'll need to copy them into a System folder that is a sub-folder under your solution folder. If your not getting the DLLs, run the dev tool again and closely watch what it throws up on the screen since it names the folder with its own convention, uless you do something to prevent it. Although some of the DLLs might not be needed in your solution, like the spell check…

I attached PDF links to my database and I have no problem opening them with FMPro 5 application or in a runtime, but when I try to open them in Kiosk mode, the application crashes. The error log says: ----- Task List ----- ERROR: could not get the task list and FAULT ->006ae875 8b4704 mov eax,[edi+0x4] ds:00eaebfa=?:? and Stopped at 006AE875 (0001:0001D875 in C:Program FilesppdsContain Solution FolderFMFC10.dll) Does anyone have an idea about what could be going wrong and how I could fix this? Thanks, J-

Is it possible to access a kiosk-mode run-time solution from a CD-ROM? I'd like users to be able to search a product catalog without the need to install anything. Is this a feature in FM Developer? Or is there another way to do this? (I know I need Developer to create the kiosk/run-time database, but I'm referring to the ability to run a database from CD-ROM) Any info would be helpful. Thank you.

We have created a Georgia History Testbank with FileMaker Developer 5 that will allow teachers to select questions by from a database of 1560 questions and create their own unique tests. One of the layouts is the "Search Page" which has the four different search criteria selectable from popup menus--Unit no., Chapter No., Type (multiple choice, true/false etc.) and question set. The problem is that, in the runtime version for windows, when this layout is accessed the chapter no. popup menu shows as fully opened. Clicking on the background makes it close but everytime the layout is entered the same problem occurs. This action has never been a problem with the regular 5…

I am using version 3 of the SDK binder so that I can have a multi user runtime solution. When I bind the program on a PC it runs fine, but when I try to access the files over the network I get the error message "Order Entry.pit is currentley in use and could not be opened. The file is single-user or the host could not be found on the network" I copyed all the .dll files from the cd into the solution folder and that dident work:-( Anyone have any iders. Ron Bascom

What is the procedure for including unique (custom) fonts in a Runtime app? Do the fonts need to be included? Do they need to be put in a "System" folder within the Solution folder? What are the details? Thanks, Ed

I have a solution that I would like to make a stand alone runtime item. My solution involves 4 related databases. Before I buy Developer 5, will it allow more than one database in the "stand alone"? Thanks in advance [ August 11, 2001: Message edited by: MAS ]

Hello, I'm wondering if there is a way to have a custom icon/logo for runtime solutions. The FMPro folder icon is nice but, if I could, I'd use my own. Have looked in Developer 5 and Windows but haven't seen an option for this. Any ideas? Bill
