Printing

I'm trying to do address labels. The first (line) field is a company name, the second (line) field is first and last name side by side, the third (line) field is street, etc. My problem is that some of the records do not have a first or last name, so there is a big space on my labels between the company name and the street address. In the past I have gone to layout mode-format-sliding/printing-slide up, but it doesn't seem to be working this time. Perhaps I am selecting the wrong field(s) when I choose this option. I would appreciate any advice as to what I am doing incorrectly. Thanks!

I have created a caption label with 5 lines that works well for me, most of the time. Some times I misjudge the size of the line and the last letter is cut off the label. I am using Avery 5160 label, each line is in Arial 8 point type, 42 spaces seems to be the max. I would like the write a script, with a pop up messenge telling me I have reached 42 spaces and stop typing on that line. I remember seeing something about a download that was a false printer driver and you could print to the false printer to create the TXT file. Currently, the Print to File allows only *.PRN files which are not accepted by the claims company (Envoy). Has anyone had any experience with Filemaker not allowing to set text to a certain size? I have a script that pauses in a certain field to allow the user to set font size and style etc., but it will not allow me to choose 7pt helvetica. I can get 8pt and 6pt but not 7.

I will print two pages from the same record. From the mac I have the option in the printmenu to print the second page from a different papertray but when I will print the same record with two pages from the Windows PC I don't have that option. I use the Laserwriter 16/600 but I cann't find a usefull driver. Who knows an solution??

i am trying to print a bunch of travel records under a subsummary. the subsummary holds things like expenses and the like, while the individual line items hold one day per record. there is a diary type field. on some days, there may be a few comments, on others, there may be a long story. i formatted a print layout with sliding objects, but i can't seem to maximize the print area. would it be possible to have, say, up to a full page for the comments, and shrink it down with sliding when not much space is needed? it doesn't work on the layout i have for some reason - maybe it's because of the subsummary (leading). Hi, I am using FMP tp detail a number of products that our company sells. I would like to make a custom label for each product. I have designed the label format etc., but I don't know how to say, print 30 labels for one record. All I can get it to do is print one label per record. The number of labels required will vary for every run. Any ideas? Also, do I need a header for this type of layout? If I delete the header part I seem to lose text on the body part. Wierd. How can I determine the number of pages are going to printed before the printing starts? In other words, I want to insert into a document: Page 1 of "total number of pages printing" , but I don't know ahead of time the total number of pages to be printed. Thanks!

I have a series of separate layouts in a database. The user selects a series of variables which results in some of the layouts printing to form a customised document. What I need to do is be able to generate correct page numbers for the document. Any suggestions would be very welcome.

A couple of suggstions: Does the bar appear when you print from other programs? If it does, the printer may be faulty. Does the bar appear when you output to a different printer? If it does, it's an FMP problem. Check the layout carefully for little "extra" lines or rectangles (perform a "select all" command and see what gets selected). The extra bits may be invisible in Browse mode but appear when printing. Is your copy of FMP at the latest patch level? visit http://www.filemaker.com and look for the updaters. Ditto for your printer's driver software and the computer's operating system, if none of the above help.

I want to be able to take four text fields, each of varying width, one above the other in a block that are center justified, and then have this entire block set to print in my print layout flush right with the page margin while retaining the blocks center justification. In other words, a center justified text block flush right with the right page margin.

I hope someone know of a way to auto expand a text box to show all of the text that is in it when I print it out.I know sliding will shrink if but I don't know how to get it to auto expand if I need it to. and help will be greatly appricatied.

Make a calculated field as follows: reportField = if(isEmpty(HeightField),"","Height: " & HeightField & " ") & if(isEmpty(WidthField),"","Width: " & WidthField)

Go into layout mode. Delete your header and footer. Go into layout setup (under the layout menu) and select fixed page margins. Set them all to zero. Make sure the ruler is showing, and drag the body part down until it is exactly 5.5 inches. Re-position your fields as necessary. This should get you close to what you want. You may have to make the body part just a bit smaller if it tries to print one record per page.

I am designing a typesetting database to print out song titles, credits, and copyrights to be pasted on existing sheetmusic and then shot on film for publication. The credits are entered in a sliding field and center justified. Is there a way to get this sliding field to always justify right to the page margin while keeping the credit text block itself center justified?

I helped a user create an application for quotes. The layout that I created printed out fine on my Brother 730 printer and also on his HP Laser. Upon delivery to the customer for a demonstration, the app would only print the information contained in the footer of the layout. I just downloaded WinFax!200 and the Filemaker plug in from RedRock. I'm not getting it... I know it's got to be simple. I understand about the calc fields returnign the values specific to the sending of the fax, I can handle that... but what script do I use to actually send the fax? I have a database with 2-3 dozen layouts, and all fields are printing in all layouts except for 1-2 layouts... and in these two totally different layouts, not all the text fields are printed, even though they are set to print and no other field is obscuring them. I've tried to get rid of the fields, re-defined the "problem" fields, and alway get the same problem. Some other times, I might re-defined one field, and it will print, then another field on the same layout, will then not print. All the fields always show up in "preview" mode, but still do not print. Arrrggghhhhhhh!! What am I missing/:/:??

I have FM5, Mac. I have a 4 page layout with 16 boxes containing 5 fields of patient prescription information. Not all patients have meds enough to fill out the entire 4 pages. I want to avoid printing four pages for all 400 patients, many pages would be blank. Any help?

Try splitting the print function into two separate scripts. The first script would only print page one to the tray with the letterhead; the second script would print starting with page two and use the blank paper tray. Not guaranteeing this would work, it's just my first thought. HTH, Dan

I'm printing financial statements for parishioners. I'd like teh first page of a multi-page letter to be imprinted with the parish letterhead logo (part of a FileMaker title header). If I place the logo in the "header" ... it prints on every page. If I place it in the Title Header, it prints only on the first page of the entire run. I had a layout with a portal with 8 rows that extended over a page boundary. That layout would only print the rows that were on the first page and none of the others. I modified that layout so the portal started at the top of the second page and extended over several additional pages. I also formatted it to slide up so that unused rows would not be shown or printed. I was then able to get all the filled rows to print even though it took more than 1 page. Is there any general explanation of why this change caused the print to work?

I have a laout that has a body in it that I have stretched over 4 pages. In the body are 4 different fields, each with a text header (not a layout part header, just dumb text). I stretched the body out becuase some field contents in the body could potentially get quite long, so I wanted to give myself some room. The problem is, when I put in some lengthy test data into the text fields, the text line at the bottom of the page can get sliced in half and continued on the next page. Also, depending on the length of some of the fields, the text header can be orphaned at the bottom of the page and the field will just begin at the top of the next page. That's bad. So, how…

Seems that in FMP3 & 4 printing cross-platform reports harmoniously required dual page/print setups for printing scripts. Is this also true for version 5? If so, are there any workarounds for such a situation? I'm designing the db on a Mac, and many of the users of the solution are going to be Windows users, and I suspect they may also have several different printers.

I have a solution I am developing for my service program team. It involves numerous related fields showing up on a single layout. I am working on a G4 which is connected to Lexmark s2455 via an NT server. The problem is that some of the fields which should have data in them end up printing solid black. I have checked the fields in the Preview mode and they appear fine. I tried resetting the printers settings (various options are available). I tried trashing the Filemaker prefs. Using File Maker 4.0. I have a simple report with 2 sub-summaries and a body. I want the body to slide up when there is nothing in the sub-summary line. It won't work. FM help doesn't help. What am I doing wrong?

Paper is 8 1/2 x 11 perforated into thirds. Layout is a complaint form. Layout is 8" from side to side and 3.278" from top to bottom. Wanted to print three different found complaints on form at a time. Problem being that I can't seem to get the 2nd and 3 rd complaint to fall correctly on the form. 2nd one prints some on the first and 3rd really prints on the 2nd one. What am I missing here?

My database, with scripted print buttons, orients the page correctly before printing. I've been using a StyleWriter 2500 connected to my computer. Today I connected to the building's new networked HP LaserJet 2100 series and it promptly printed all layouts in portrait orientation, ignoring the print script completely. The odd thing is, when I switched back to my trusty StyleWriter, it did the same thing. Please don't tell me that I have to tweak every script, with regards to page orientation, each time I switch printers. Is this typical of a corrupted file? Data entry works perfectly. Help!

I have a file with 6 repeating fields (up to 500 repetitions), title header, header, subsummary above listing, trailing grand summary. 1st page is great; however, all pages starting with page 2 are repeating 2nd field at the bottom of page 1 in the header of each page. Using FMPro 3.0v6 on NT. Is the print preview mode generated using the selected printer's drivers or does FMPro manipulate the preview before formatting to the printer? File maker 4.1 for the MAC randomly drops the street address field when printing mailing labels. I can print several pages of labels and some of them will be missing the street address, then I print the same set of labels, and others will be missing the street address. I administer a FM Pro 5 database which contains, among other things, e-mail addresses for a group of contacts. I would like to be able to send e-mail to specific contacts using FM. My e-mail software is Groupwise 5.5- however I am having difficulty integrating the two pieces of software. Does anyone have any advice on how to make this happen? I can get as far as using the send mail script in FM, but nothing seems to happen except a "Print" job is generated. All help is appreciated! The user can tab through and select the service rendered, etc. Now I want to print an invoice, but want only the services used to print. Hello all, I have a rather simple problem I hope. I'm running 3.0v6 clients with the FMP (NT) server version. With the push of one button I would like to send one layout to a regular 8-1/2 x 11 printed page and a second layout to a labels only printer (roll labels). I've tried embedding two scripts inside a main script but the problem is everything goes to either one or the other printer, not both. Of course I've run the print jobs manually and then replaced the print setups but that doesn't seem to fix the problem. One more thing; We will be running this script often so I don't want the user to have to mess with the print dialog box everytime he prints. Just one …

Help! I get "Sorry, Filemaker is unable to continue printing (-98)" when I try to print on my hp deskwriter. I'm using a Filemaker Pro 3.0 v2 and G3 Mac Powerbook with system 8.5 and DW series 6.0.3 printer driver selected in chooser with appletalk off. I've got printer port selected although the laptop has a combo printer/modem port. I can print from my powerbook 180 with same printer driver and system 7.5.

Am trying to build a report showing unpaid balances brought forward prior to a certain date, and then detailed new charges from that date to present. BBF and Current charges would be totalled at bottom of STatement. Balance Brought forward and current charges are related by customer number. I have worked through some fairly convuluted systems but I am betting that there is a simple way that I have overlooked. Would appreciate suggestions.

I'm not sure if this is the same as the font size problem discussed already... One of the faculty in my school is using Filemaker (4.1 I think ) and the print preview does not show an actual representation of the print job. This results in a job overlabbing multiple pages when it should be on one. When I am in the browser mode(100%) and have a textbox that is 10 cm long the text is also 10 cm long. When I reduce or enlarge the window the text is about 9 cm long. The printout is also about 9 cm long so it would be a problem with the 100% view. I have this problem both under apple and windows.

Hi all, I just started using an envelope feeder on an Apple 16/600 PS printer. I just found it lying around and for some reason most people around here love to print labels..... I setup a simple layout in FM Pro 5 for a database of addresses. I have the Page Setup set to print landscape at 100%. ( I have tried different settings) When I send #10 envelopes through the printer I always get a vertical line along the right edge of the envelope about 1/8 of an inch from the margin. Also the Month total and Year total though I had to manipulate them just a bit. I've been trying to get a PDF writer installed on my system so that I can have filemaker save reports as PDF files to be sent to customers. Earlier, someone here told me that I could download a PDF writer from Adobe. I did a search and found an adobe page that offers their PDF writer in 8 different languages for NT and 95. http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/acpwin.htm I have windows 98 unfortunately but I tried these other two versions anyway and of course I couldn't get them to work. Hello, I have been using FaxTool from Data Designs and it works well. It uses DDE calls to Winfax to get Filemaker faxing directly without all the Winfax dialogs popping up. It also comes with some great sample files that you can modify and incorporate into your solutions. All the faxing can be done via Filemaker scripts. Very Cool. I want a report to initially allow as many as a hundred record/rows in a portal. It would seem that I should format the portal to show 100 rows. Then, not wanting much, I want that portal to slide back to as few as 2 rows or remain as large between 1 and 100 as the user wants in that report. My database generates several reports (layouts) all of which must be rendered in Preview mode in order to see summary fields, etc. We need to send these reports to our customers all of whom have email and fax machines. I wondering what the best way to do this is, particularly from within a script. I can print the report to a file then attach this file to an email and send the email to the customer using the "send email" command, but this would require that the user have the same printer and printer driver as we do - not bloody likely. I suppose we could acquire all of our customers printer drivers and then render the print file accordingly before sending the email, but …

Ok. Here it goes. I have tried everything I can think of. Form letters database. Have a text field we will call "LetterBody". Users can enter in text and format text (fonts,size,etc) and also enter in "merge" fields by placing [[clientname]] in body of the letter. To create the merged letters and to convert [[clientname]] to xyz client name. It uses a calculation field we will call "letterbodymerged" it uses the substitute options to do the merge. I have an index of records listed in a table view. The layout has a toolbar header on it that I don't want on it when I print. I would like a different header on the print out. But I also want to be able to reorder and resize the fields of the index in the layout with the toolbar and have those reorderings and resizings reflected on the print out which needs the non-toolbar hear. I have just switched from an Apple Select 360 Laser printer to an Epson EPL-5700i laser printer. All seems to be going fairly well, except for a document I just created where the layout text is defined to be fully aligned, (right and left flush on the margins). On the screen and in the Preview Mode everything appears fully aligned, but when it actually prints, the right boundry is not aligned. Any suggestions or others who have had this difficulty? As mentioned earlier, I'm experiencing problems with printing of layouts, that look totally O.K. on the screen, but are printed in a wrong way. the font on the printed version seems to be smaller, than on the screen, because mor words fit onto one line. the result is, that the text occupies lace vertical space on the page, and therefore the elements, that follow this text are not moved up high enough, thus there is to much blank space between the text and the rest of the page. Hi, I have a layout for printing with approximately 600 fields on it (the layout size is maxed out). Each field has a title and a note field. I would like it so that if the field is not filled out it, it's title and note will not print and the layout will shift up accordingly to save space and paper. Is such conditional sliding of objects possible? I've been told about sliding/printing but I don't think it will remove the field labels as well as the actual empty field. I've thought about making the entire thing one big merge field, but I'm not sure how that applies to field labels. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks!

I futher i go the less I know! I have a form set up , that most of the information stays the same , I have a portal, that is one row with a scroll bar, it can access up to ten records. It works and looks wonderful except I can't seem to print the record I have scrolled to and selected, it always returns to the first record what am I doing wrong ------------------

My company has used File Maker for years on MAC computers, but they have decided to switch to PC's. When we transferred the database from the MAC's to the PC the layout on the screen was fine, but when we print the a sheet the layout becomes misaligned. We have sheets of data that display operation numbers in one column and they must line up with the operation data in another column. Well on the screen the numbers line up with the data, but when we print the sheet the numbers no longer align with the data. It worked perfectly on the MAC version, but when used on a PC we have that problem. What could cause this problem? Please help.

I can use "Send Message" to open a specific file, but I would like to know if there is a way to open and/or print multiple external files in a varying field in FileMaker Pro 5?

The key is to design your report with the appropiate Sub-summary parts and then place summary fields for the totals in the right parts. But this will not work unless you have the data sorted in the same order that the parts are set up on your report. If I am understanding your setup: Your parts would be: Year Institution Type Institutions (being the body) The sort would be: Year Type Institution With these dang'd small reply boxes it is hard to follow your own logic. Again the key is the sort has to follow the order of your parts. Play around with it and you will succeed.

I think is a common problem... Running FileMaker Server over a Windows network in a school district. I have several solutions running that all have printing scripts like Landscape-current record, Landscape-all records, Portrait-current record, and Portrait-all records. And all the layouts that print have 1/2 inch margins. These scripts work great EXCEPT... There seem to be a few rogue printers out there (an HP 800 series deskjet comes to mind) that ignore the landscape scripts and just print portrait. This is EXTREMELY frustrating to the users who take it out on me. Is there a generic printer driver out there that I should use when I create my printing scri…
