I recently moved (copied) an FP7 database containing over 6000 records of linked images off of an external drive and onto a hard drive so that I can serve it with FMS 7. I am hoping that the images can remain on the external drive. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I might update those links so that the images work again? Or maybe I need to re-think the structure of this database all together? Or is it possible to serve the original copy right off of the external drive, bypassing the need to correct the links? I guess this topic is relevant in the FMS 7 forum as well ...

Hi. Never been a problem to enter a range for a query. Now I come across a solution where I should enter such a range AS DATA in browse (eg valid between the ages 0 and 12). In the past I used to work around this with 2 fields (begin and end of range) and I wondered if someone had tried something else? Range doesnt seem to work in browse. BTW, any idea to enter the data 'infinite'?? and thus (combining both questions) how to enter something like 'valid between age 50 and death?' Regards to every reader.

Can anyone help me write a script that allows me to find a set of records within the last found set. I have 100 total records for surgical procedures. I have a spreadsheet with totals for # of successes, # of males, # of females, average age, race, diabetics, smokers, etc. I have written scripts that will find just the number of successes and show the totals of males, females, etc. Now within that found set, I would like to further break down the data. Here is the problem that I encountered. I put it in two ways... illustrated and in words. If you can understand the problem in words, it will save some time... otherwise please read the illustrated way of showing the problem in an example. We use with FM Pro 4.1 Mac and FM Pro 6 MacOSX as ODBC Client and it works fine. Now I bought a update to 7 and want to use this FM pro 7 as a ODBC Client but it is not possible because this feature is not implemented. Comes this feature with an update or never? Can anyone help me with the Remote Kerrnal? I have a database that I have converted and beefed up for rollout. Some of the files were FM 6 and 5, I converted and cleaned them up in FM 7 had them working perfectly. I then installed FM 7 on an OSX machine, I found the files on a client machine, I can open the files. however I cannot modify the records. I am told the remote kernal may be bad. any suggestions? I am also shy now to work too much in fm 7 not knowing when the kernal is going to be good or bad. Please help - I have 100's of hours in this project.

I have a database that groups records according to a category with a component to check for New Record ID number duplications. A script automatically summons a separate table, Current ID Numbers In Use, to display all the found existing ID numbers for the selected category. The table uses a portal with a related field, ::ID_#_[Fabrication], from the main database component. The table now lists the entire database's ID numbers, not the found set which the main component has isolated. What do I need to do to display only the found numbers? TIA

Hi I'm just getting started with FM7. I see the only Windows platforms they mention are Windows 2000 and Windows XP. Will FM7 run on Windows NT? I had thought (mistakenly??) that Windows 2000 was derived from NT. Thanks for your help. Walt

I have a Purchases DB containing 2 tables, the first table (Purchases) contains the order information and the second table (purchasesItems) contains the line items to that order via a relationship [PurchaseOrderNumber = PurchaseOrderNumber]. My Question: Is there a way show related line items from the current found set in the Purchases table. Example: If the current found set in the Purchases table displays say Purchase Order numbers: PO.0001 PO.0004 PO.0020 I would like to create a GoToRelated or Find script which would take me to the PurchasesItems table and display all the related line items from the current found set above.

Goal: Easily convert all ole objects imported into plain text. Background: MSAccess database/table has ole objects which is used to store RTF (Rich Text Formatted) data. Since MSAccess has a very short limit on text fields, the developer used an ole object. I have purchased Filemaker 7 Developer and can import the MSAccess database/table via ODBC. I have often volunteered to help my son and daughter's school out with their computers. Several years ago they had someone design a FMP program that keeps track of their students. It has been working fine until right before summer break. Apparently, the program freezes a lot. Often after freezing it can't find part of the database and they have to do a recovery (they have done this several times). Now a couple of their students "have a blank file." They reentered them but they can't get rid of the blank ones. Greetings, What's the best way to bring up a related record in another file? I'm building a CRM project. When a new call comes in, the user determines who the caller is and his/her contact info is inserted into a new record in the Activity file via a lookup. I'd like to provide a scripted button that takes them to the caller's record in the Customers file to make any changes (address etc.) They would of course then have to click a button to relookup the caller's info. I run a small fencing school. My little DB now has about 7 tables, with more than that replicated for setting relationships. I have a contact table with a contactID (key) and e-mails, phones, etc. I have a student table with various data. Each entry in the student table has the studentContactID of the student (the key), and up to two others -- one for parent1ContactID and another for parent2ContactID. I have a ClassList table with records that contain a particularClassID, a studentContactID, and other information. I am going crazy. I'm sure that there are many posts relating to this subject but I cant find them. Someone please help me. I have two tables (FMP7) One is manufacturers and one is products. I want to choose the manufacturer and then only get the items related to that manufacturer when I am in a table I have named QUOTES. Hi all, I'm trying to use valueListItems(relatedField) to record data from a related field. However, this command only return distinct items. The function will ignore any item that is similar. For example: If I have 2 items: "01/01/04" and "01/01/04", valueListItems only record one "01/01/04" and ignore the other. Does anyone know how can I get around this problem? Thanks, H.P.

Hi, I'm having trouble finding an efficient way to determine which header records can be closed based on the status of the line items. Background: I have a simple two file DB in ver 6.x. The files are related like a typical purchase order; one header file and one line items file. Each line item can have a status of OPEN or CLOSED and the header also has a status of OPEN or CLOSED. Hey all, I'm developing a multi-location inventory solution using a number of tables, 3 of these tables are: 1) Item - with fields Item# Description 2) Location - LocCode, Description 3) ItemLoc - Item#, LocCode, Quantity There would be a record for each item in each location. For Windows version of FileMaker Pro 7 trial version (English) when I run the updater the following Windows Installer error message comes up - 'This patch package could not be opened. Contact the application vendor to verify that this a valid Windows Installer patch package.' FileMaker Pro 7 and all other applications are closed. I wasn't asked to put in the original Windows XP disks. The patch package download is 'fmp_70v2_win_updater.zip' and 114,088 KB in size. There are still 24 days to go on this trial version. The only thing I can think that might cause this is there's also FileMaker Pro 6 on this computer. Any suggestions?

I am trying to populate a pop up menu from a field but the order in which it appears in the pop up list is alphabetical. I just want it to appear how I typed it in the field in the first place. So I have 2 questions: 1. How do I get this list to appear in the order in which I typed it? 2. What I would really like to do is enter a list of items into a global field and have that list be a pop up menu. The problem is that a global field cannot be a value list. Whatever I am doing, I do not get as hardcopy what I am seeing on the screen in the preview mode. Nothing like scaling and the like helps. When the printer has finished its work, the "format" on the screen has changed, i.e. becoming smaller or bigger. No such problems with FM5. The other day, we had an update on the virus scanning software and I have updated Adobe reader from version 5 to 6 but no other changes have been made to any software or any driver. Could the virus scan software cause such problems??

I am unable to save printer settings iro paper format. There's no mistake with the printer drivers, as I am using various different printers - including FreePDF. I do need European A4 format, however, FM is always going back to US letter format, even when "saving" the settings I do need in a script. How comes? How can it be assured, A4 is the primary choice?

I am using FMP 7 on a Windows XP Pro box. I have a database of about 125 records, one table, and about 300 fields in that table. One of the fields is a container field into which I have been dragging PDF files from a Folder. I closed the Database, and then reopened it and the PDFs were not available any more. IE. WHen I tried to double click on them, they did not open Acrobat Viewer. I put another 15 PDFs into the DB using the exact same method. Dragging PDF files from a folder. I've converted my 10-table database from Access95 to FM7 (on Mac), copied all the data into identical tables, replicated all the reports, panels etc etc. (Took me almost two months to complete). It worked for a couple of days, after lots of testing and comparisons with Access results. Now, nothing. I open the database, it goes to main panel, which has several buttons to invoke various reports and other layouts (data entry etc). But, now, none of the buttons responds, nothing happens when I click on them. I close the database, start over, same problem. If I go to the Scripts menu and select a script to take me to another panel or layout, no response. What's going on??…

the database has 6 fields and i want to print 3 fields on 1 label and 3 fields on the label in the next column for a total of 4 label columns per page. i can browse the layout the way i want it to print, as a list, but it only prints from the 1st and 3rd columns. i think the problem is in the way i am setting up the layout mode. I am trying to re-organize slide information in filemakerpro7 and print info on 2 labels per slide, 3 fields on each label for a total of 6 fields per slide. any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm at a new job, and my boss just upgraded to FMP 7. He's been using earilier versions, and is getting used to the new version, while I've never even used a database before. I need to find information on container files, OLE embedding, and linking for him. A little background: I have a small network -- two desktops, one laptop -- that has a wireless router. Originally, one of the two desktops was wireless, the other wired. I had problems with dropped connections on the wireless desktop, so now it is wired as well. I have FM Pro 6.0v4 on Computer "A". I have three [very simple] files that were created. I have a database with one File, Customers, that links to another file, Products. In the Customer file there is an invoice layout that looks up the prices based on the Product name. Some of our model numbers are a little complicated and sometimes it is easier to go to the product file, copy the name of the product, then return to the customer file and paste it into the invoice. The problem is that when we paste D 830pdd.3 we get 10023556. and I have no idea what that is (maybe a record number) Does anyone have an idea on how to fix this?

I would like to create customer numbers that are simple, unique, and only 3-5 digits long. I would really like to be able to start at a number and simply increase by one. This would need to work on a networked solution. I'm new at Filemaker, but it seems the following should work. I'm wondering if there are any problems created by making a seperate file with only one record containing text or number fields. The text or number fields (not global fields but treated as such) would then be referenced on a networked solution to obtain unique, sequential numbers for invoices or customer numbers. Hi, Its me again! I am quite new to filemaker pro and I am not sure what its capable of and what it isnt! Anyway, question is: I have two tables. one with People ID, names and address and two with People ID and status. The two tables are related through ID. I want to Find records in Table one(i.e. ID, name and address) with a condition on status(say status = employee) from the Table two. Is it possible to "Constraint Find"? I'm not a FM developer, just someone who is greatly enjoying tinkering with FM, awed by the powerful potential which I don't yet fully understand. Hello, Maybe there is a solution to this but I just cannot think of one. What I have is a Purchase Order Database that has 7 repeating fields with 18 repetitions. The Fields are "Qty.", "Mfgr Part #", "our Item #", "Desc", "Min Pur", "Cost Ea." and "ext'd". There are lookups on our item number that populates the description, mfgr part #, min pur, and cost ea. I have successfully set up FMPro Unlimited v5.5 to serve up web sites using templates created by using v3 of Claris Home Page with its assistant. These web sites contain a home page, a search (criteria) page, search results (list format), and a detail page. Hello. I am new to this forum, and I have a question about FMPRO 6. Currently, I have repeating fields setup where I populate all of my data. However, sometimes not all the fields will be used. I want to make a layout where it will check the value of the Resolution field. If the box is unchecked I want the data across that row to show up on my report. If the box is checked I don't want the data to show up. In my picture all the data across the first row will show up, but not the second. I've got a custom dialog box that appears and asks the user to enter a date. It then stores this date in a global field inside my globals table. The problem is, half the time, it fails to update the global field, so the script elements that follow don't work properly. (and the annoying part is that half the time, it actually DOES properly update the global field.) Has anyone else had this issue, and is there a workaround, or is it something I'm doing incorrectly. I am struggling coming up with a solution. I need to be able to create a unique export file name using a field. Each export will drop a tab delimited file on an FTP site, but the filename must be unique. I have four variable called start date, start time, finish date and finish time. I want to calculate the total time but when i do a simple finish time - start time and if the finish time is in AM(the next day) and start time is in PM i get a negative time. basically i want to involve all the four variables to calculate the total time and store the value in a variable. But I miss a very useful characteristic from Excel: When you are filling a new record, the program Autofills that I write with the data of all the other records (the data of this concrete field). I understand if FileMaker is too lazy support PostScript fonts, even though it's really the only program I've ever seen in my life that won't support them, and even though it means that hundreds of dollars worth of fonts are now worthless. That's fine. But I've inserted an EPS into a print layout, and when I print it shrinks the size of the EPS, no matter what size it was before I inserted it. Needless to say, this is frustrating. In my v6 version of my client manager, I could insert company logos into my invoice layouts, etc. Is that chapter of my life now closed? You should not lose core features when buying an upgrade.

Aloha - We have a simple problem. We have a vendor database that contains names, addresses etc for the vendors. Our other database is for purchase orders. All we want to do is find the correct vendor, and copy their info onto the purchase order so that we do not have to type in the info each time. So simple yes? My question is this: Which direction should I be going in to accomplish this? 1. Write a script (that was fun and almost worked) 2. Set up a relational database 3. Use portals. Question: 3 (or more)fields on 3 (or more) lines; I would like when I go to print the record (i.e. preview mode) for there to be no blank line: Example: field 1 on line 1; field 2 on line 2, field 3 on line 3; if field 2 is blank, I would like for field 3 to move up to line 2; I think a calculation field would work best but I don't know the syntax. I am developing a solution for a client who wants to use font symbols in a drop down menu from a value list for Mac and Windows. The symbol desired is a check mark which works great on the Mac system but I can't find an equivalent on Windows. I can't figure out how to get around this on the Windows machine (there doesn't seem to be a suitable substitution). I thought about using a calculation with a global of an image of a check mark but I would have to create over 300 calculation fields and scripts so that doesn't seem like a good option unless there's a better way to do it. Any suggestions?

Hi, I have a main layout with different buttons say- General Info, and Address. I have two other layouts with the "general Info" and "address" respectively. When I click on either button on the main layout, I do not want to skip to the appropriate layout. This is what I am currently doing. Hi all, I desperately need some help. I have a group of four computers which are connected together as a basic intranet, no network server, just an apple airport extreme and sharing of files between the computers. Unfortunately money prohibits too much else. Now I have File Maker Pro 7 and need to allow users access to the databases which are being held on computer A. Computer A has the file open and I have Sharing over the network set to on, with the IP address of computer A as the given IP. When I try to access the file from computer B, I can see computer A at the correct IP address, but cannot see any of the files when using the Open Remote option. Is it possible …

Hi, I have a FM7 database with 4 tables: AGENCY BRANDS CAMPAIGNS AD CODES I am trying to create relationships between all of these tables based on a numeric ID field in each table i.e. AgencyID, BrandID, CampaignID, AdCodeID. I understand the idea of a 1 to many relationship somewhat from MS Access but am not sure how to do it in FM7. I need an AGENCY realted to many BRANDS which are related to many CAMPAIGNS which are related to many AD CODES. Hi all, this is my first post to the forum. I've just started using Filemaker Pro for developemnt and have come across my first problem. Luckily I managed to solve the others but am just stuck on this issue. I have defined a database for a billing program which has 18 kinds of charges on it. e.g. Creative fees, Recce, Air Travel, Food, Production etc. Problem 1: Depending on wether the bill should include the charge or not, the user needs to have a list of these items on the first screen and he checkmarks only the ones he wants. Has anyone noticed that when you constrain a found set in FMPro7 and the result is 0, for some reason you are still left with the same found set that you started with? Also, has anyone had trouble in FMPro7 using the Get(LastError) scripts? I can't seem to correctly execute in FMPro7 the same scripts that worked fine in FMPro6. Thanks in advance.

I've been having a problem with printing a record from a web browser. I want users to be able to access my database, and to be able to print out forms that are horizontally oriented (landscape view). I'de like to make it as simple for the user as possible. Right now the default page set up for printing is the vertical orientation. Is there a way to have file maker tell the browser window to change the page set up to the landscape orientation... actually is there even a way to make some kind of script (that i could attach to a button) that tells the browser to print, instead of requiring the user to go to "file" and then "print"? thanks for your help Je…

Hey all, I've been wondering why FMP7 added accounts without also adding 'account specific global variables'. In other words, why don't users have their own scratch space? It seems that all the multi-user woes are intact... using 'lock scripts' and the like. But by adding non-global scratch fields to an "accounts" table (containing all the active accounts), shouldn't I be able to make a relationship where "get(accountname)=accounts::accountname" and thus access temp records from a particular user? Hi, I need to export into multiple files (several thousands, xml-files for flash-application, one by one record). "Export field contents" works fine within a loop, but it overwrites one and the same file over an over again. Hi-- I have upgraded a database from 6.0 to 7.0 and am having a problem with a date calc field. The calc is supposed to handle a date which is entered in the format: 5/03/03 11:51:24 PM EST And have the result of date: 5/03/03 The calculation is as follows. In sorting in valuelists all the words strating with '_' and ending with '_' are sorted out first based on the character after the '_' and sorting of all words with first character as an alphabet are sorted after that. Hi all I have recently re-built my machine and forgot to note which fonts I had installed on my system. Now when I load my FM documents they are using substitute fonts in place of the ones it expects to find. Does anyone know of a way to report which fonts are missing from the design/layout. Once I have the names I can re-install the appropriate fonts and get my documents looking good again. Cheers Milan

I have noticed in FMP7 that creating a script doesn't seem to be an automatic action. In previous versions, once the root actions have been performed (i.e., page setup, sort, find, etc.) using Scriptmaker to set up a script would establish the necessary script steps to repeat the desired script. Not so in FMP7. Nothing seems to be recorded when creating a new script and I can't find the requisite actions in the scripting menu. Am I missing something or has Filemaker, Inc. left something out?

In a database I have a bunch of records about people, and each person is designated by a unique ID code. There are multiple records for each person, though (each record represents one person for a particular year). What I want to do is sum the data over all the years for each particular person in a new table (or a new database). Anybody have any ideas? Maybe a script?

I am "experimenting" with the new features in v 7, esp in regards to not needing to generate multiple/complex keys to set up relationships, but I am kind of stuck, and I think it is because the environemnt is so "visual", whereas I could work the problem out as a series of join statements in SQL fairly quickly... Hi, I am new to file maker pro. I have 3 tables- People, Teachers and Courses. People and Teachers are related through a common field "Client ID". Teachers and Courses are related through a common field Course ID. A teacher can have more tha one course ID. I have a database in which I am trying to summarize and analyze data. Here is what I'd like to do if I could figure out how to do it: I have four specific symptoms (leg pain, ulcer, gangrene, ischemia) that require the same surgical procedure. I have a hundred or so patients with one of these symptoms. I want the database to count how many occurences of each symptom appear. I would like a layout with a table that says: leg pain - 25, ulcer - 17, gangrene - 22, ischemia - 28. Or something like that. This is one of many fields that I'd like summarized similarly. Is this possible or do I need to put the info on excel.

Not sure what forum would be appropriate for this question, so here goes: I have a client who wants to be able to execute a Windows "print" command on any Windows document, from within FMP. This is analogous to a user right-clicking on a file and selecting "Print" from the pop up menu. We're using Troi File to get file paths but there isn't any Troi command to specifically do this, that I can tell (eventually we want to be able to compile a list of files with Troi File and have all documents open, print and close, in sucession). As well, there doesn't seem to be a way to have Troi launch a program; all it can do is open a document, which in turn launches it's parent app…

I converted a FMP database which consisted of more than 10 files, from version 5.5 to 7.0. The conversion created a lot of problems and issues. One of the problems is that a field (in file : use a popup list that is designed to use an external value list in a relational file (file A) that shows related values only. This value list (in file : works fine in the Browse mode, but does not show any value in Find mode. I didn't have this problem when the files were in version 5.5. Has anyone seen this problem before? Do you know how to resolve it? Any comments will be appreciated. Thanks!

I have 15 salesmen that access the FileMakerPro 6 database from all over (they use their office computer as well as their own home computer-which limits my use of Auto Enter Creator Name). I have them in a Record_created_by field that has a drop down list of their names(value list). I want them to only be able to access the records that they create. I have tried various variations of limited password protection but everytime after creating a record --they can't see it. I tried limiting password...Record_created_by=Status(Current Fieldcontent)--doesn't seem to work. Any help is apprectiated..
