From Troi File, I can managed an automatic exporting of a some records from a 40 files solution into a text-tab file in a diskette. But I don't know how can I split these 40 Tab-files (aprox 100 Kb. each) in different diskettes of 1,3 megas, because there is no enough room for all of them in just 1 diskette. How can I script these process? Any ideas, please?

I have a Win2K SQL database that I would like to export to a file and then import it into FMP7. I have tried to export MDF, LDF, and SQL formats to a single file however FMP7 can not import them. The manual says that I need to connect to the database via ODBC to import, however I would prefer to import from a static file. The SQL db is complex therefore I would like to convert it all over at one time as opposed to rebuilding the db using Excel exports. Is there an alternative to connecting via ODBC? OK, I'm a newbie to FMP. I have a "database" in Excel I need to import to FMP and convert to numbers. For example, if the field in Excel is "Unemployed" I want that to be a "1" in FMP, if "Employed" in Excel, then "2" in FMP. No clue how to do that. Sorry for the total newbiness, and thanks for the help.

This one is pretty specific. But basically I use a series of filemaker fields to build an html calculation field which I then export in a tab separated text file. The tab separated file is renamed .html, then attached to an e-mail to form an html e-mail newsletter using a program called GroupMail Pro. However there is a problem. This is all done on PCs and the e-mails display fine on PCs. However when we come to view them on Macs then for every line break there is a square character. This happens in Entourage X, Mail.app, and Thunderbird When viewing the source of the message it seems many of the line breaks and quotation marks in the code hav…

Well, I searched ... found similar but not this. And I've been trying to figure it out but everything I've tried still takes a LOT of manual work. I will be presented with 250+ Excel worksheets. These worksheets have a Synch number (which I can use as a match field) and then the column labels are stock codes. The data will be text in 125 of the worksheets and a date in the other 125. I am attempting to automate this process of importing these as individual records. I can achieve importing the labels as fields - but not data. I may have to do this and then split them into records? Oh, I hope I can automatic this a bit more. Worksheets look like: I want…

I need to make a copy of a table's structure within the same file. I am making archive tables to cut down on the number of records normally seen by a user in day to day use. I don't want to have to totally redefine the tables if I don't have to. I am assuming that I will have to make an odbc connection to the file and use SQL to copy the table somehow, but since there isn't a supported Copy function in the documentation, that makes it hard. Has anyone solved this type of problem that could give me a point in the right direction and save me some all too precious hours?

At the moment, we are sending out emails with text only however we are wishing to shift to html formatted emails. All the content is stored in the FileMaker Pro DB (Mac FMP 6) and I'm not too sure what we need to create HTML formatted emails. The email client that we use is Entourage of OS X. At this point things work fine if we are sending text only emails. Any ideas of what we need or tool and where I might find some how to into this would be appreciated. Thanks Dave

I have a major problem and need some help quickly. The situation is we have gathered a lot of onformation for a community website and have all this info stored in a Filemaker 7 Database. The website that is being developed for us is running on the Mambo open source solution which calls on a MySQL database. I need to be able to eprot all out Filemaker database to SQL but sadly this feature is not included in FM7. When I use the other export options the resluting data gets messed up with weird characters. Does anyone know of a way to export Filemaker to SQL or convert from Filemaker to SQL? Any help will be very much appreciated.

Does anyone know how to convert a FM database to an EndNote library? The people I work for want to convert their old FM dbs to EndNote. I tried exporting the data as a tab-deliminated text file to EndNote, but the EndNote wants the fields (references) defined before it will import the file. After that didn't work, I imported the tab-deliminated file into Excel & then set up the fields in there, & then exported the whole thing as another tab-delim file. Then I tried to import that into EndNote, seems it wasn't a compatible format. Anyone have any other suggestions?

I have a customer who wants to be able to determine before a new recorded is created, if a existing record exist. What I am conceptualizing, is a script that will display a message if the user is creating a new entry and inputs a field entry(in this case, a patient ID number), and when they hit enter, it will check for duplicates and if a match is found, it will display the message "duplicate record already exists, otherwise it will continue on with creating the new record. What I have though about so far is this. I am not sure what commands to apply to the code so if any of you FM scripting experts could list what entry or method to better perform this type of…

Hi, I have used customer postcodes and field that required a 'Unique' postcode field value during data entry to avoid creating duplicate customer records on my database. This worked well with FileMaker versions 3 and 4.1 but with FileMaker 7 the onscreen warning of a duplicate does not trigger until I have finished keying-in all the address and customer data. Earlier versions of FileMaker picked up the duplicate as soon as I tabbed out of the postcode field. I'd appreciate advice if anyone knows how to get round this?

I have a soccer league file containing all the players and teams in a town league. There is a relationship built between the team file and the player file. Hello, I am working with the import/export feature in a script. I can easily setup the script to send to what most people would think as a common place to save any backup, excel, or HTML and that is drive 'C'. What I am finding is that there are a few people out there that don't have their main hard drive as drive 'C'. Questions: 1. How can you setup an import or export to save in a persons 'my documents' folder? I know I could select the folder, but everyones 'my documents' folder has their name associated with it. Is there a way in FM to get around this. As far as I can tell you can send to a specific folder or the parent FM folder. I would like to send the info …

I'm having trouble getting data into QuickBooks. So far I haven't even used FileMaker yet, I'm just creating a IIF file by hand, but I'm hoping someone here can help out since Intuit has no interest in supporting IIF anymore, the documntation is sparse, and I can't find a QuickBooks community as helpfull as fmforums is. My initial problem is that QuickBooks says a customer is required for an Invoice. The problem is that there is no field for customer, there's only NAME which is the customer name. To make this post slightly on topic, I will eventually create a FMXML->IIF stylesheet and post it here if anyon'es interested.

I've been a longtime developer, but have never utilized XML until now (or rather, I need to use XML now). Here's my dilemma:: I have a contacts table that I want to export to the web via XML. I then want to later import those records back into my contacts table from web using a script. What's the best way to go about this? I've been able to export the records to an XML data source on my local drive. Do I need to utilize a style sheet at this point or should I simply post it to the web? I have a personal website and yahoo site builder tool that my webhosting service provided. Do I need to save the XML source in the same folder as my web pages?…

I'd like to export selected data to Excel for further processing (to do things that FM7 cannot do). In FM7, I've created a report that selects certain data (from multiple tables), does some calculations and summarization and presents it in columnar format. So far, so good. I have a Customer List that is stored on my accounting software program. The Customer List is then exported to a .PRN file (basically a text file). Then I import the data into Filemaker. We want to export our FileMaker database into a pipe-separated text file to serve a purpose for an online database extraction system we propose to use on our website. Are there any export options that allow us to control how the database fields are saved in order to easily create a web-compatible format? The closest export option that seems to be available in the FileMaker application is *.csv files, but we require the pipe separator rather than the comma, and no quotes around the field items.

What I am trying to do is import data from a csv file into FMP6 file using a unique sku number. The problem is that the import csv file has multiple items with the same sku, also the FMP6 file has multiple items with the same sku. Here is an example of the problem the csv file has 6 items with sku 2056 but in the fmp6 file there are 12 items with sku 2056. I need for the csv file to match sku on only 6 of the items and then map over the data only to 6 of the items in the FMP6 file not all 12. It does not matter which six items of the 12 it maps over. I have decided that data previously appearing in a layout as a portal now needs to be in the master file. This means exporting a record to a series of fields in the master file. I'm sure this has been done often, so I won't bore experienced importers with the peculiarities of this database. However, it is significant to note that some master-file records will be filling up 40 fields from the related (ex-portal) database, whereas other master-file records will be importing as few as 3. So a simple loop will not do the trick. Steve

Until recently we have used Filemaker clients to peer-to-peer share a database over our network. The client doing the sharing also used oAzium events to regularly run an export script. So, we have a regularly updated text file export on the 'server'. cron is used to call various perl scripts that move this data on. Due to a change in requirements, we now really need to use Server 7 to share the databases. So, how do we go about setting up automated export from this server now? Server 7 itself has no facility to regularly export data from the files it shares. Can we do this? 1/ Launch a client automatically via applescript, connect to the remote DB (can App…

I have database that has a many to many relationship and a non related table. I export each table to a seperate file. When I try to import each file I can match the names on the main table, but I can't on the related and non-related tables. Why? The only thing I can select is add as new for the other table fields. This is a big problem, especially with duplication. I would love to only have to export to one file, but FM can't seperate the other tables. It wants to import only to one table. Thanks for your help. If this has been discussed already please let me know.

I am using FM 7, and trying to import records from another database system. There are about 50 fields / record I need to import. When I try importing all these fields, I import 481 records. I figured there might be some limitation on how much you can import, so I just imported two fields, and got about 2,500 records imported. Since there are almost 5,000 records in the other system, I tried just importing 1 field, which contains just 2 characters/record. I still only got about 2,500 records imported in. Does filemaker have a limit on importing (either # of records or size of all data imported?) and if so does anyone have experience with this/any useful tips…

Here's a problem I can't figure out: Certain layouts won't print, not to the printer, preview or PDF. I get this message: Sorry, Filemaker unable to continue printing, error - 9705." This is one eMac out of three working with a database on the server. The other machines are fine. I reinstalled FM6 and then reinstalled system software. Still no resolution. Other programs print OK, and some FM documents are OK too. Any help would be appreciated.

So I'm using ODBC to import a table of accounts from SQL Server. I want my FM table to be a mirror of the SQL Sever system. The obvious choice is to use the acct_id primary key field as the match for updating records. Also, there is a preference for creating new records when non-matching (new) records are created in the SQL system. The problem comes up when records are deleted from the SQL server table. This doesn't cause records in my local table to be deleted. Importing doesn't seem to trigger record modification timestamps to change either. So how can I easily delete only records that are deleted from the remote table? Any input on this is greatly app…

Hello, I have a database that has a relationship to sales data. Basically you have a product layout with a portal to all the sales to that product such as sale_date, Sale_QTY, and Sale_Amount. There could be more than one sale for each item. When I do an export it will only list the most recent sales data from the portal. How do you export to excel the item an then fill in the cells for all the sold data from the portal. Thanks for your help.

Trying to wrangle some flexibility out of the the IMPORT FOLDER option of FMPv7 with image imports. It has some nice features (creating a thumbnail, and just a reference to the file), but has some inflexibilities also (why can't I import 1 image with thumbnail generated -without having to alter my folder structure?). Anyhow, loading in 1000 or so images in various formats (TIFF, JPG, PSD) using IMPORT FOLDER option, and am finding that every now and then that the import will terminate with a Filemaker error message Sorry, there is not enough memory to complete this operation. Doesn't say what file, but I can work it out through elimination. Here are the facts: …

I am not a filemaker user or developer, however we have a client who wishes to receive data in Filemaker format so I have to find out which product I need to purchase. All I need to do is take a csv file and convert it. Nothing else really. I am doing this in C#. The main question is - do i need to purchase Developer 7, or can i get by with the runtime available with FP7? I downloaded the trial version of FP7 to try and work with the runtime, fumbled my way thru attempting some scripts, but to no success. Someone's advice on the right product will enable me to get a purchase order written out. The next question, time permitting, is - what would be the best m…

Importing seems to be a simple matter yet, the 700+ imported records just keep disappearing. The target file indicates that it received the records, however, when the file is reopened after being closed the counter reads 0. Also, the source file is 29megs and after the records have disappeared, the target file is 450Kb. If this is a corrupt file, is there a way to confirm? TIA

I simply want to get a list of e-mail addresses exported so I can repeatedly send e-mail to members of that list. Ii am currently trying to export to a tab-deliminted file and then opening this in Excel. The addresses are contained in different fields. So, when I export the data I need, I end up with multiple columns in the spreadsheet. This makes it difficult to check for duplicates. I am open to a varienty of approaches. I have been working on figuring this out for days, and I am sure there is a simple solution. Thanks! Karla

Hello, I am new to the forum, and pretty new to FileMaker. I need to send text and numerical data in XML to this guy that uses Visual Basic, and requests that I export the data out of my FileMaker databases in an XML format such that it has a CRLF (carriage return/line feed). Form what I have been reading, I might need the appropriate XSL sheet, since the XML format generated by FileMaker without the use of an XSL sheet I guess does not create a CRLF I guess. Designing an XSL sheet is well beyond my current knowledge. Is there an existing XSL sheet that I could have access to that would fit my needs? I did some searching on the web but did not find an xsl sheet that refer…

Hello! Here is my thing to solve. I do export records from a txt file, where fields are divided by commas. The database is build for a production factory. They divide the product in "Order, pack, and cott.". Cott is the smallest unit of product which navigates through the lines of production. I do get the number of Order and cott. from the txt file, but the number of pack is inserted manually. I want this to get done automatically. The concept is that the Order can be composed by one or more packs. The Pack in it's self is distinguished by the article used for the product. Packs are serial numbers (1, 2, 3, ...) inside the same Order. And it restarts 1,2,3,..., when Ord…

We are converting from Act to FM7. They have 85 .adt templates of which 40 are used regularly. Upon review, they open in Word but contain merge fields which look like: DatabaseID=[[DatabaseID]] etc. I've used merge fields in Word before with other db programs. I assume I can just respecify the table that Word uses in the merge section. Does this sound correct? But I would prefer converting them in one batch. Does anyone know if this is possible? I suppose I could convert each one into FM; in fact, I think I will plan for that anyway. But, in the meantime, is there a quick way to relink these adt files to save me opening every single one? LaRet…

Ok, I'm doing a conversion of a pretty large and complex database I built in V6. Uses a number of files. Well, thanks to the Multiple Tables per file feature in v7, I can cut the number of files used in my solution significantly. So my question is.. Can I import the fields and layouts of one file, into another file as a new table?

Hi! I want to export a table as text with fixed positions. Field_1 from position 1 to 32 and with blank space filled with zeros. Field_2 from position 33 to 39 and with blank space filled with underscore...and so on. Record line ends with carriage return. All in all there are 32 fields and 8000 records. The data in every field can vary in length. My first thought was to create a calculation field collecting all 32 fields with a lot of text functions, but I hope there is a better way. Thank's in advance!

I am amking a database for a user to replace an older non filemaker database. One table has about 60 fields, and when i import data from the old DB, it comes in with extra spaces at the end of each field (for example: the first name field in the old db contains 15 characters, so John would import as JohnXXXXXXXXXXXXX - where X are spaces). This is not good, especially in cases where letters and other layouts are created using merge fields. I know I can set up a second field and use the trim function to remove the spaces, but with 60 + fields, I was wondering if there was some way you can trim while importing so i dont end up having to create a secoind, trimmed fiel…

I'm trying to figure out how to import specific records into one table only if a matching ID exists in another related table? (e.g, firstname/lastname links both tables, but the tables contain different into). The table is initially blank. The other table is loaded already. The data I have is a superset of the data I want to import, but I want to import only data that has matching first/lastnames in the table that is loaded. The only other thing I could think of was to populate the keys into the new table from the old table, but I can't figure out how to get script to do this -P If the keys are loaded into the new table, I can do an import and check off the se…

Hi there. This is quite a specific problem so I hope I can explain it clearly and you guys can help me out! Ok, I have 3 FM files (CLIENTS, INTERESTS and RELATED) i.e. a many-to-many relationship. I have a portal in CLIENTS which allows the user to select various interests for a particular client from a drop down menu. This works fine when adding and removing interests of current CLIENTS records. My problem is when I am importing records. I can import the client details fine (from a .csv file) but I want the user to be able to set the same interest for each record they import (either using a dialog or the drop down list). It should then be added to the next f…

I'm using FM 6 to pull together images and text and other info for a catalog. I can't get the images to import into my container field as CMYK, I get a JPEG Error 25. But when I convert them to RGB and import, they pop right in. I'd like to keep them as CMYK as opposed to having to save two copies of each file...I think it's a filter issue, but I am not exactly a brain surgeon here. Can anyone help?

I want to attach an image file name along with an image when I import it into a container. I have developed a DB for my microscope images. I need the file name attached to the image because the file name contains all of the information about what the tissue type is, what stain was done etc. I want to be able to import the image and also the image's file name at the same time into the DB layout. Another option would be to import the entire image into one container and concurrently import the file of that image into another container. This would work because when the file itself is imported into a container, the file name is visible. I would want this to be done concurren…
