Value Lists

I made a small conditional value list to teach myself the concept. For my needs, I would have approximately a dozen conditional value lists that would regularly change. It seems like a aweful amount of work to create something that is admittedly very useful. I wish updating conditional value lists was as easy as updating normal value lists. Any chance Filemaker 7 might include something like this? Is there any work around that someone could suggest. I suppose if the first "value list" was a series of buttons (say, Products) that allowed the user to go to one of series of custom layouts (Companies which produce that product) and then onto a third set of layouts (Speci…

I have two files - one tracks inventory and the other contains customer work records. I am a _very_ novice FMPro user trying to set up a basic database, so please excuse incorrect terminology. I have a call tracking file which includes Topic and Sub Topic fields which are drop down menus (plus other fields which are not pertinent to this question). I have 7 items under Topic such as: information, troubleshooting, order, feedback. I'm developing a contact database, and I need to track referrals. The default for a contact is no referral, alternatively "referred to" or "referred from". In each of the alternate cases the list of salesmen (...they are all men ) that a contact is referred from or to is the same, so I'd like to use one list for both cases. I've looked at the "Country" example on conditional value lists, but I can't figure out how to modify it to solve my problem. Please help.... Thanks Dave

I was looking for a way to do the following like Access does: I go to filed NAME for example. I start typing the "J" from Jones. The first name that has a J as the first letter shows. I continue to type the "o" and the first Jo shows. Then "n" and the first name with Jon shows. I can hit enter to accept the current name or continue entering letters. I maintain a database for a club. The club is divided into various "Houses". A member can belong to more than one "House". I have a single text field called "Household" that displays check-boxes with the name of each House (there are currently seven houses in all). I said "currently" because the number of houses changes year to year and, sometimes, the name of the House changes at the beginning of the year. For example a calculation that's performed and stored in a local global which is then used as the content for my dropdown? I need to stay in the database I'm in so I need 'local' solution. In the database I have three dynamic value lists (from three fields in the database): cat1 = main category cat2 = sub cat 1 cat3 = sub cat 2 There are 8 main categories. Ok maybe I did not made myself clear. I have to pop up menus. (1) Popup menu number 1 has the following id values: 01.01,01.02,01.03,01.04... and so on. (2) Popup menu number 2 has the following class values: History,Algebra,Sciences,P.E....and so on. I have two value list as (pop up menus) one of the list is a (1) class id number menu and the second list is the (2) class name menu. What I want to do is the following. I am developing a FM solution for a church and the staff wants to be able to view a list of all our members (2,000+) and insert them into an attedance database. I basically have a portal to our members file and when the user clicks on their name it inserts them into the attendance file. Everything works fine. They have asked me if it is possible to have a list pop up that they could simply highlight a name by typing part of it and press the enter key to select them. Hi, I'd like to turn the value list items into records in a database. So far I've succeeded in putting the items in a global and counting the number of items (with a patterncount function). I want a script with a loop that would do the following: -go to the first line in my global -copy the data -create a new record -paste the copied value item - go to the second line in my global -....etc until the last value list item in my global has been turned into a record. Problem: Value list sorts in an unfriendly manner. I want items in list to be grouped in a specific order, not by "starts with" sort. Background: A value list in <fieldITEM> is determined by a choice from valuelist of <fieldTYPE>. Further fields are populated by this combination. The problem listing is in <fieldITEM>. Is there a limit to the number of characters each value in a value list can contain? The problem is my value list has fairly long chunks of text for each value. This does not fit easily on the screen. when I resize the field the text is clipped. By the way, the field is formatted to show all the values with check boxes.

Hi all, sorry if this is old ground.... Im using fmdev 5.5v1 on windows 98, just so you know. What Im trying to do is create a value list from a global field. I have a text field called Boys and a global text field called pep_boys, into which I have entered "Manny, Moe, Jack" as the values, separated by returns. The global field has not been configured as "repeating". When I go to format the Boys field as a pop up menu using values from a field, and I click on pep_boys, I get an error stating that it will not work since pep_boys can not be indexed. this might be a stupid question, but is there a way to have all checkboxes checked on a new record? I want to keep track of my students that have paid for the months. So I have the months in a checkbox valuelist. But if I do a search of the records, it will show me all the students who have paid. But I would rather see the students who haven't paid. Kind of a reverse search result.

I'm working on a database for a school. I have a student database, and now I'm making a separate database for marks. Rather then having a separate one for each grade (as was the previous method) I have decided to put them all in one. The report cards have different courses for each student (since they can choose their courses). I want to only display the marks and headers for those subjects that each student takes. To start, I was thinking of having a bunch of checkboxes listing the courses available for each grade. That way for each student, the courses that apply to them can be checked off. I have a recipe database. Think of it as a book with chapters such as "Deserts", "Salads", "Soups", etc.. Below those headings in the hierarchy are the recipes. In the preview mode, I can easily get a list of the chapter headings by putting the field in a Subhead part of the layout and sorting by Chapter. I would like to be able to get such a list in Browse mode so that I could script individual buttons for each chapter. I am trying to create a few easier reports. This is a DB showing attendance. I have established a value list using checkboxes. This value list comtains approx. 40 plus names. What I would like to do is create a report the would show only those name checked on the value list to appear.(ex. Name1, Name2, Name3, Name4, Name5. Only Name 1 & 3 are checked - Only display 1 & 3 would be diplayed on report. I have a conditional value list created from a relationship from file A to file B based on a global field in file A. The global is set to create the relationship. If I use the value list on a field in file A for finds it works fine. If I put it on a related field from file C, I can use it to edit the field but the list is not availible in find mode. It seems as though the list is not being generated but doesn't give the <value list missing> error. Any ideas? Thanks, Wayne

Hello Everyone, Here is my scenario. I have a database just for all of my value lists. There are several different codes for each ministry at our church. I have broken all of them down for each ministry. There is a Primary Key for each ministry. Then there are sub value lists for each ministry. Everything works fine in browse moden when they are entering data into the main database however my value lists do not work in find mode. Hello! How in the world can I make a checked checkbox "flash" in order to attract the attention of the user? Or a similar thing... What happens is that I want to add that to the "owes money" checkbox in our customer service database so when when a customer service representative picks up a call from a customer that owes $$ she can look at the checkbox flashing and take certain actions (we sometimes miss the checked checkbox by itself so we need something to "pull" our attention if the checkbox is checked). BACKGROUND: In file One I have sales reps in which each rep has an <Active> field of either "Yes" or "No". In file Two I created a value list of sales reps whose <Active> field was set to "Yes". I did this by creating a global field populated with "Yes" and then creating a relationship between the global field and the <Active> field in file One. I then created a value list based that relationship. Hi Folks, I have a survey report page, that uses repeating fields and filtered value lists. The first field is used to select a trade, based on this trade selection the second field provides a filtered value list relevant to the selected trade. On the first row of the repeating field this works perfectly. The problem lies when you move to the next row of repeating fields, instead of the second field basing the filtering of the value list on the first field on this row it, bases the filtering on the first field on the first row. Can anyone provide any assistance on how I may work round this?

Hello, I have a layout with lots of columns. These columns need to be filled out using formula or manually. But one of the column (Item) is filled using value from the Item file. What I want to do is when I click on the column title I want to load a separate layout window with data from the Item file, on top of my current layout ( ie. pop-up window not a pop-up list). I then select x number of items from the pop-up window and click on an add button on the popup window. These items are then added to the Item column of the original layout. How can I do this? Hey there, I currently have a value list populated from a record field in another file. The file has about 1000 records so the value list requires a lot of scrolling. Is there a way to jump through the value list by typing ex: typing "m" would take you to all values that begin with m, "ma" would take you to all values that begin with ma, "man" would bring you to all values that begin with man, etc. I've seen this technique utilized often on website that ask for a state or country. I have developed a solution in mac and windows environments. Some fields are repeating fields (five repetitions). The values of these fields can be obtained from a value list shown as a pop - up menu. (the values are amounts of text). The mac version works fine - click on the field, pop-up menu appears, select text, and in it goes! On The PC, however..... click on the field.. nothing happens, I cannot gain entry to the field. I have checked the field format and "gain entry to field is selected" The solution is exactly the same, copied on to CD from mac and then dragged over to PC. I have deselected "read only" from properties menu. Any suggestions?

Is there a size resitriction to value lists ? I have 2 related files, which when I create a value list from them showing 2 fields, will always (I mean always) cause FileMaker to crash if I try to use the value list in the main file. I am assuming they are too large and File Maker can't handle it. I would like to use a radio button with a value list. When I do this, the fields and their corresponding buttons align themselves horizontally across the layout. If the value list is long, or the values in the list are character intensive, these radio button choices require that you scroll to the right to see them all. Is there any way to have more control over how they appear in your layout? Is it possible to arrange them in groups a number eight domino? Thanks!

Hi, I can not remember for the life of me what is the function to choose a specific value list entry. For example, I have long entries, and don't feel like typing the whole entry in calculation field: MyValueList entries: 1. This one is pretty long 2. I have a field where you make value list selections with radio buttons. When you click in the field these radio button options are presented horizontally on the layout. If my text (per radio button) has too many characters I have to scroll to the right to see all my choices. I am creating a billing database with conditional value lists. The first database (customer database) holds customer information, projects, and specific project information. I originally wanted to list each customer and then the associated projects, but I couldn't exactly figure it out so I just imported the excel spreadsheet I was working with. I have a single file called driver_cards. There is one field in the file named "driverName". In one layout I have the field setup for manual entry. In another layout I have the field formatted as a drop-down list pulling from a value list called "Driver Names". The value list is pulling from the field "driverName" without a relationship. Hi, I have a database called People, with contact info on members of my group. I also have a database called Organizations, with info on orgs. that we works with, such as businesses, churches, etc. Each person in People has a unique ID number, and each Organization in Organizations has a unique ID number. I need to sort a value list in reverse order of one of the displayed (numeric) fields, but there appears to be no native funtion in FM (v5) to do this. Obviously, I could create a calculated field with a *-1 version of the original field and use that, but that field would then have to be displayed (a bit ugly). And as the list is to be used to insert a value into a field, I will then have to re-calc to get the correct value in. Does anyone know of a more elegant solution? I have three source files - Lodging, Dining, and Activities. When a new customer requires a custom travel package I want to select entries from each via a pop-up list and copy the contents of the record(s) to the customer package files. I can effect the pop-up selections but am having trouble building the customer's package db. customer is related to pkg by customerid. Pkg is related to the three sub-files - custlodging etc. - by customerid and pkgid. Hi All, I plan to make a value list depend on relationship but it gives me 2 choices to search for value list. Let's me clear it out. I have State and city MA Boston If people type only MA , it shows up MA and all cities in MA and correspondent information , but if they type MA and Boston , it shows only MA and Boston city and correspondent information. With my knowledge, value list depends only one relationship, it does not base on 2 relationships. Anyone has that problem before? Thanks Anh Tran

Hi there, Does somebody know why, on some workstations, a big pop-up-menu is shown as multiple lists next to each other and on another workstation there are up and down arrows at the top or the visible end of the menu's? I have a cabinet shop. I am building a questionaire for my customers. The questions that I ask these people all have "allowable" answers, which we select from a drop down value list. The next question is always a function of the answer to the previous question. For example: We ask if you want painted cabinets or stained natural wood. If you select paint we don't ask any questions that might be attendant to wood grain expectations. Similarly if you select stain grade we don't ask you if you will be brush painting the final coat. Hello, After importing some excel files I get a place-name field which is the first three letters of place names; there are about 50 in all. What would be the best way to store a list of the full names, and have them automatically displayed based on the initial three letters, or do I have to lookup an 'If' formula with 50 possibilities?? I have the "Customers" database which contains basic info of my customers including "Last Name" and "First Name" and a calculated field "Full name" which is = "First name" & " " & "Last Name". So far no problems. I have other database called "Visits" to record every visit to my customers. In that database I have a field "Customer" and in the form I choose to have a pop up list to select the customer's name from the "Full Name" field in the "Customers" db. Same question as before but with simplified example...using two tables. wo_test inv_test ------- -------- techname techname serialnum serialnum stockdate usedate I enter "techname" , "stockdate", and "serialnum" into inv_test. My technicians use wo_test. I only want the technicians to see "serialnum" for their matching "techname" and only when "usedate" is empty. I created a relationship: techname=inv_test:techname which displays only the "serialnum" matching "techname" which if fine - but I need to filter out all "serialnum" records that have a "usedate".

I want to create a calc or script that lets me put a number in one field and a corresponding value list of 3 or 4 choices shows up in a second field. For example: I have a field called grade. If grade 1 is picked than the values B5,B6, and B7 come up in a field "Room #" when clicked (drop box). Hello, I have a big checkbox list that get's its content from a field in another database. This list refreshes whenever the user clicks anywhere or does anything, and it takes a few seconds for the list to refresh. How can I speed the refresh up? I am an FMP newbie trying to create a database to track inventory and work orders for a group of field techs. I have created two files, inventory and workorder. The inventory file has: "serial number", "stock date", "pull date", "tech name", and "useage date" fields. The workorder file has "tech name", "serial number" and many other fields. I enter equipment into the inventory db once a week, entering "serial number" and "stock date". The techs come into the shop and update the record, entering "tech name" and "pull date" when they stock their trucks. I defined a value list (valListA) in FileA with the Use values from field: option. The field I chose to populate the list is in a different file (FileB). I also defined a field in FileA that is formatted as a pop-up list and uses valListA to display values. The odd thing is that I am getting some extraneous blank entries in the pop-up list. There are no blank records or fields in FileB. So then, I put a portal on the FileA layout and inserted the same field as valListA into the portal. There are no blank entries in the portal. Hello, I'm new to filemaker and have a problem I can't seem to solve. I have a fairly normalized db using numerical 'IDs' as the primary keys. Specifically, my problem is that I have a file for info about people,i.e., age,sex,haircolor,etc. This is file 'tblpersons'. It has a field 'HairColor_ID'. Hi, I'm brand new to Filemaker. I've created a couple of db files. 1. SchoolProj which contains printer_name, designer_name, writer_name 2. I am creating a database for a law company that tracks cases and what awards are won. Because of the variety of awards that can be awarded and the fact that there will be mulitple inputters, I need to make this as simple as possible for the user to figure out where to put the data. For example, in one case there can be the fields medical_award, lost_wages, pain_suffering and punitive while in a different case there could be compensatory_wife, compensatory_child_1, compensatory_child_2, compensatory_child_3 and punitive. I am a relatively new use to filemaker and need some help. I am creating a conference registration form and have created several value lists (ie, one for workshops, one for registration type, one for evening events, etc.) Is there a way to assign a fee for each item in the value list. For example, in my workshops value list I have all of the workshops listed where I can fill them in using a radio button. But, not all of the workshops cost the same amount. Can I assign the amount to each workshop without having to created a seperate field for each one? On a Mac, the Go to Field script step does not make a pop-up menu (as opposed to pop-up list) pop-up. As I really want to use a pop-up menu and not a pop-up list I need to assign a script to the arrow part. Is there any workaround anyone knows of? Pete

Hello List, I am trying to make value lists specific to a certain field. ie, in DB #1, I have Receiver #, and 16 fields for the frequencies programmed into the receiver. In another DB, I want to have the Receiver # field be a pop up list only showing the numbers from "Receiver #" in the first database, and a "Frequency in Use" pop up list consisting of the 16 fields of frequencies from DB #1 related to the Receiver #. Is it possible to have a field with a value list that is created by the data that is entered into that field? For example, I live in an area that has very unique street names. I do not want to have to enter every single street name in order to "equalize" the way that the information is entered. Can I create a field called "street" that allows me to see a pull down menu of the streets entered or add a new entry (which would then be added to the value list)? This should probably be easy, but I just can't get my head wrapped around this concept.

I have 2db's, one is customer and the other is contact, I have the standard customer info in my db, but also have fields first oncall -sixth oncall field. I need to be able to place different contacts in the oncall fields, currently it is putting the contact i pick in on six oncall fields, i need to keep contacts for the customer file i am in, i use customer id and contact id in my relationship. I have two fields - one called "Order Status" with a value list containing two values associated to it, and another field called "Resolution" that is just a plain text field. What I *want* to happen is whenever anyone enters the Resolution field and enters text, after they tab out of it, I want the Order Status field to change value from it's default (Open) to a value of Closed. I have a basic understanding of filemaker and was told this forum is the best to recieve help from. We hav a saleperson field with a list of collegues in there and this saves fine but when you change the saleperson as he or she has left then this in turn changes to the new collegues name as they have taken over. We need help so we can keep previous booking with saleperson that made it as historic records and not being changed by adding the new collegues name in. Any suggestions? please help Sat
