I have a value list of items (created from a relationship) and I would like to have a calculation to randomly pick one of the line items in the list. - Any Ideas?

I am not sure what to call it but, I would like to be able to take a paragraph list (text field) and burst each carriage return into individual records (in a separate file) and then store the records back into a paragraph list. Has anyone seen a nice solution for this?

Hi -- I have a database in which the end user wants the following: 1.) A unique serial number that is a one-up serialization based on our company's fiscal year. (starts Oct 1st). 2.) They want the one-up to restart at the beginning of each fiscal year. (i.e. id number at the end of FY 2003 might be: 2003-097, the next record created in FY 2004 would be 2004-001) 3.) Is it possible to move fields around while one is in browse mode? Since most of our clients are using the runtime version of FMP, getting into layout mode is not an option. I would like to do this because some of the layouts we produce have to be printed onto original forms, and different printers give different results. It may be necessary to move the fields around to print correctly to whatever printer is being used. I am using FMP v6 and a PC. Thanks!

Imported text from another file. Old file people insisted on using all caps. Is there a way to convert text to title caps, without just going into layout mode and changing the font style. The fields will be used be an email program and it is pretty ugly to see all caps.

Given a number, say 2345678, I need to add up the ODD position digits and multiply the sum by 3. Then add up the EVEN position digits. Both sums are then added together. Finally, determine the value required to bring that sum up to the next multiplier of 10. Example: 1. Calc of the odd position digits:(2+4+6+8)3 = 60 2. Calc of the even position digits: 3+5+7 = 15 3. Hi, I'm working on migrating data from one DB to another DB. In playing around with FileMaker I found an interesting gotcha: If I do a find with ==spectators' it returns false and then I want to create the record with spectators' as the value. However when I enter spectators' as the value for the (indexed, strict, unique) primary key field, I get an error indicating that the value isn't unique. The value spectators is in another record. I'm speculating the FileMaker thinks the ' at the end of spectators' is extraneous whitespace when comparing it to the existing values in the table. i am setting up a contact, reservations, and donations database for a local theater. i am stuck on the letter/email part of this. mass letters/emails will need to be sent based on various search criteria (group, name of last show, etc.). doing the search to create a found set is not the problem. with that found set, i do not know the best way to go about the letter database. i know how to simply create the letter with the found set, but i need that letter to have other custom fields inline with the body of the letter so the letter seems personalized. i also need the letter date field to automatically enter itself into the main contact database in a field that tracks all c…

I have a docket system. Each docket (one record) has related line items. Each line item is either a category or a category item. So the cat. item is related to the category which are both related to the docket. Hello, I have a record that has fields A - F. I want a calculated field that says "Record Updated 1/1/2003 by User1". I want the field to change when information in fields A, B, C change but not if info in fields D, E, F change. Ok I have a question. Currently our usernames are stored last name comma space first name. (Smith, John) However when logging in to our domain controller it doesn't allow commas, so the users have to log in last name space first name. (Smith John). What I want to do is have a field called login that automatically is populated with the Username, but without the comma. Is that possible? Essentially I want it to look character by character and if it is a comma then delete it, but I don't know how to do this in filemaker, or if it is even possible in filemaker. ~Allen

I have a roster which is a portal of Classes and the students assigned to them. The roster is added to AND deleted from sometimes on a daily basis -- kids add or drop the classes. Rather than printing out ALL of the new rosters with the changes for the teachers, I would like to only find the rosters which have been added to or deleted from. I have been able to find the "Added to" rosters by using a Date Modified field ... but to find the rosters which have had Deletions made to them ... YUCK! No success!! Suggestions/Solutions welcome!

I don't see much on EDI in the forums, which surprises me considering how much talk there is in the industry. All I know about EDI is the obvious that the name implies - electronic data interchange. I am planning on developing my new database using A) an invoices database (mostly for increases in balance due), and : a payments database (mostly for decreases in balance due). I am wondering if there will be any way to generate a statement of account that would list all invoices and payments in order by date. Since it would involve a listing of records from two databases, I'm not sure how to approach this. Thanks!

Has anyone seen a nice solution for having a popup list shorten as items get taken. Example: Build two teams from a list of ten names. As the names are taken they no longer apear in the popup. Note each member is a record and multipule users will be building different teams so the members record can not be tag so that it will effect the other users popup.

In certain situations I create temp records in a separate file to pull data from many related files to print a report (like a work ticket). I have been very successful in using a scripted pattern to Set the data from the many files to the temp area, then deleting the temp records when done. We have got a FileMaker 5.5 database that we would like to directly print a Directory from. The data is organized into Main Categories, some of which have Sub-categories. For example, a Main Category might be Software which has Sub-categories of Games, Business, Music, and so on. Some Main Categories do not have Sub-categories. Numerical Precision This should be a very simple thing, but it has stumped me. All I want to do is to have two full decimal places displayed after a number has been used in a calculation. It seems simple, right, just use the field format feature and zap. However, I don't just want to look at the number, I want to insert the number with some text into a text field. For example the output text could be something like: "The total cost is $2.10". FMP will return "The total cost is $2.1" instead! I hope I can ask this question in simple terms. I have a business in which customers often buy more than one product. I have created a line items file which consists of one record per item ordered on an invoice. Each record includes item ordered, the cost per item, the sales tax per item, qty per item, price per item (qty * cost), and shipping per item. I'm trying to figure out how to change numbers to text. I have a list of users that attend classes. Each class (record) has a date. Of all the users I would like to see which ones are active users. My first approach would be to look at the last three classes and add the difference between the dates. The lower the number, the more active the user is. Is this a good approach? Am I overlooking a function that is already built-in FMP?

I need to cut a large piece of text into multiple standard lengths. I can use the calculation functions 'Left and left word', but 'left' can cut words in half , and 'left word' cannot make a standard length of line. Any suggestions? Kieron

My end goal is to list monthly totals. fm.5 has an example supplied called sales report. I duplicated it's example for "by Date" and eliminated everything but the subsummary part, and colored it. It is sorted by "Week Number". Checking preview showes the color, and adding fields works as expected. However I can't manage to reporduce the same on my file. I even tried re-creating, (in the example), the same calculation field, same type and options =WeekofYear(Date Sold), but changed the name to "Week nu". After redefining the paret to the new "Week Nu", it will not display in preview, and I can't see any difference. I can't get any subsummary to show in preview, wha…

I have a summary problem: Each record belongs to one of 14 main areas. Each of these areas has 9 more subdivisions, and each of these is further subdivided into 7. Let's name one of the 14 as AI, the next divisions are named 1 through 9 and the last subdivisions are named A through G. I need to produce a summary of each of the respective combinations. Hi All.. Need help with a calculation that escapes me. I have a field that I will enter text in. 2 or three lines at the most. I then need a calculation that will search for a word or group of words in the text and then return the next word following. I know I need to use pattern count but the rest escapes me.. Hi Again!, this inherited db is a nigthmare. it consists of several related dbs to one main db. now one problem which is evident straight away is that it is quite slow when entering some of the layouts within the main db. could this be because caluclations are performed from the related dbs and shown in the main db? it is not possible to change the indexing as well, it states that the calculation cannot be stored because the field refernces a related field. a lot more development work is required and im begininng to think that starting this from scratch i.e. binning the inherited db is going to be easier then understanding why and how the previous develope…

I am trying to come up with a calculation that will display the highest number used in a field for all records, regardless if they are in the found set or not.

I have a series of records with sale dates. What I want to do is create a new text field that will give the Quarter for each sale. So far, I figure I need to use some kind of nested Case function for the text calculation, but have not been able to figure this out. The test I want to do is if the SALEDATE falls in a range of dates then SALEQUARTER equals "quartername" and the cascade down nested cases until most recent quarter. Not sure whether my problem is in not knowing how to test date ranges or how to nest the cases.

Bob Weaver's checkboxes are great... now if I could only store the values of the checkboxes, clear the checkboxes, store more values and add them to the last batch. I can clear the checkboxes but the values go with it.

I wonder if anyone else has had to resort to this... I wrote before about the easiest way to print thousands of name badges through either repeating or related fields. This is the second part of the problem. The badges come out on 8.5 x 11 sheets with six badges per sheet. If you print out, say, 300 badges, you get 50 sheets with 1-6 on the first sheet, 7-12 on the second, etc., so when you get the pages out of the printer, you separate the badges into six piles and then spend a lot of time playing what I call "solitaire in reverse": picking up one badge from each pile until you have one big pile in order. I have a list of names that can vary. I have to spread them equally into six groups, where group six would have a minimum of two, or a maximum of the other groups. So.. groups one to five will be equal size, and group six will handle the carry over.

I have a daily loads database with 3 fields: truck, draw, press run. I have a preprint listing database with fields of day, date, advertiser, truck, draw, press run. When typing in truck it lookups up the draw and press run from the daily loads. Hi I'm trying to create a text result from a simple value list. What it should do is when something is selected from the value list, then anywhere on a layout -a text result should show which is equal to the value list selected. Example: Value list = Apple, Banana, Peach If "Apple" is selected from the value list then the result could be a green "*" text, if "banana" then a yellow "*" and if Peach then a orange "*" Thats it. I can see that repeating fields are out of favor with database purists, and I don't use them much in our db's. But how can I solve this problem: We have conventions where people sign up as a group, with multiple people in that group, but we want to collect all of their individual names and print a namebadge for each one. In the past, at smaller conventions, we've had about 20 single fields for people to enter names into (we have online registration through FMU as well as entering data by hand), but then namebadges were printed by printing all the delegate #1's, then #2, and so on, and sorting them by hand back into order. It's a 24/7 company that dispatches calls for customerservices. What they want is: A user calls, enters a code using their phone and their call will/should be dispatched to the serviceman thats located closest to him. Here is another of my crazy questions... Scope: In any given day, our business office will process "x" amount of contracts. Part of this includes submitting a form to another company. This form is normally typed, and contains fields for 10 records. I was able to replicate this form on a layout, but a problem I've encountered is limiting this list to display only the records which require submittal, instead of all records. Given my options, I thought of using a date range, but that does not prevent the same records from showing up on the list. Is there a way to "flag" a record, maybe a button that the user clicks to flag a record (show up on the form)? …

I need to produce a reports from two types of searches. 1. Choose all or one of the quarters and select a year. 2. Macintosh FileMaker 5.5 and 6 (OS 9 and X) I'm in the on-going process of developing a database system (FM5.5, MacOS 9) for someone overseas (FM6, MacOS X) which has been working fine, but they seem to have found a peculiar problem in the Recover process ... or more likely "user error", which is hard to check since they're overseas and I don't have a network to try it on. All the files are named using the ".fp4" filename extension (a left-over from when the system was first created in FileMaker 4.x). This is from a right brain thread that has turned into a left brain question. rightBrainThread I want to separate check boxes into a repeating field for each item checked. The one thing about repeating fields that I still like is that when you import them, you can burst each repeat into a separate record which will solve my report problem. So I am looking for a calc that will take a list of carriage returned items and put: line one into repeat field one line two into repeat field two... and so on up to ten repeats.

Hi everyone, I have a big problem: I need to have a calculation field that would be different for each record of a file... Ex.: I have a file 'PiecesSpecifications' and a file 'Doors'. In 'PiecesSpecifications' there is a calculation field 'Formula' that count how many pieces we need in a specific door according to its width. But that calculation field must be different for each pieces (ie. each record). For example the calculation of Piece #1 could be (DoorWidth * 3) and for Piece #2 (DoorWidth * 2). Is it possible? Hi Guys, i have a problem in that the calc below will set the field with a number depending on the job cost. Now if the job is below 1000 the field needs to be set as 1 and so on (see below) but for some reason it sees that if the cost is for example 120 it sets the field as a 4 and not a 1. i have the understanding that the case function will take the first true result?! so therfore if cost = 120 then the result is 1. Am i missing something? i have set fields in that the number format is set to two decimals and a "," for thousand seperators. How to split an existing value list??? Let say, for example, you have a customer file and an employee file... & upon adding a new customer record, a user must select his employee name & number from very long ("emp" field)value list. All emp's work at the same location... Same scenario, only now there are 2 or more locations and a handful of emps now work at Loc A, another handful at Loc B, and so forth. What I think I am searching for is a way to maybe select a certain "Key" field or radio button, or something that prompts a user to choose a Location, and presto, the proper list of emp's is presented. I have a a file that I wish to have checked for duplicates. The records consist of an ID # for a person who has attended a specific class on a specific date. What I want to do is concatenate the ID, date and class name fields, then use that field to identify duplicates. I created a self-relationship based on the concatenated field. I need records to auto advance to the next record upon completion of the previous record, is there a way to do this in Filemaker 6.0. I am using this for data entry but if someone has to stop entering to click for the next record this will decrease productivity. Hello all. I have a B&B reservations DB with relations to a houseDB and TransactionsDB. It works acceptably. But I would like to create a visual interface in FM5.5 that would allow a reservation-taker to reply quickly, over the phone, for instance, which bungalow (of 12) is available for reservation on a given range of dates that interests a client or travel agency. The friend for whom I'm attempting to put this together currently has an excel sheet with 365 rows by 12 columns. I have imported a text file using FMPRO 5.5, and I now have an FMPRO database. The database has 6 defined fields. I know how to search all records for duplicate data in the same field, and I know how to concatenate fields using a calculation field to check all records for duplicate data in multiple fields. However, my problem is that the text file I inherited was not originally set up in a very organized manner, so I have data from one specific field that is sometimes duplicated in a different specific field in different records . I am using FMP 5.5 on XP Pro and need to enter special characters. I have made a database for my slides and use it to print labels for them, so space is of concern on a tiny 7/16" x 1-7/8" label. So my question is this I'm using arial fonts and would like to continue to, but it will not allow me to enter the special characters female and male symbols. Even if I just had to change the font for this one symbol that wouldn't be so bad, but I can't seem to find one that will let me do it. It always just inserts a ? Hi all, I have done a payroll database recently. However, the payroll database involves taking out a standard amount of money from each person on a weekly basis. The report for this deduction is done 'monthly'. The reason I put 'monthly' in quotes is that for the purposes of payroll a month may have four weeks or sometimes it may have five, depending on how the weeks fall. The report will have the employee's name, their employee number, and columns- week 1, week 2, week 3, week 4, and week 5. Really having trouble kickstarting my brain on this one. I've got a contract file for a talent agency. They represent a roster of about 35 musicians. When they procure a date for an artist a contract is issued. Each contract is its own record in the file. There are about 5000 records dating back to the year 2000. This includes dates for all 35 artists. Each month, they have to put a letter together for each of their artists listing their itinerary for the next 4-6 months.
