Greetings, What's the best way to bring up a related record in another file? I'm building a CRM project. When a new call comes in, the user determines who the caller is and his/her contact info is inserted into a new record in the Activity file via a lookup. I'd like to provide a scripted button that takes them to the caller's record in the Customers file to make any changes (address etc.) They would of course then have to click a button to relookup the caller's info. What sort of script can I use to bring up the related record in the other file? Thanks, Mark

Hi, I'm having trouble finding an efficient way to determine which header records can be closed based on the status of the line items. Background: I have a simple two file DB in ver 6.x. The files are related like a typical purchase order; one header file and one line items file. Each line item can have a status of OPEN or CLOSED and the header also has a status of OPEN or CLOSED. How it works: The users open each line in a typical fashion. When thay have completed their work they change the status of the LINE ITEM to Closed. Later the manager visually scans the database looking for all HEADER records that are OPEN where all LINES have been CLOSED. The…

Is there a way to trigger a filemaker script every time the contents of a specified folder is changed. (eg, when an image is added to a specific system folder a trigger will cause a filemaker script to run?) Do you need a plugin to monitor a folder? Can this be done? -Smilemaker.

I have created a simple Filemaker 5.5 database. Is it possible to create a layout that will pull up only fields that have had information entered into them? Or is it possible to be able to "see" (in browse mode) only those fields that have data in them? I need to print out a document for specific records that shows only the fields that have data. I'm supposed to look into web publishing possibilities. I read about this mysterious thing called Web Publishing. I got my hands on a Pro 6 unlimited CD and have been looking for a good while now, but I can't find any real information at all - where is this Web Server Connector thingy they keep mentioning? - how do I install it? - where? Hi all, I am just wondering if there is a way to "record" scripts as you might do with macros for example...or is there a plugin that can do this. A little background: I have a small network -- two desktops, one laptop -- that has a wireless router. Originally, one of the two desktops was wireless, the other wired. I had problems with dropped connections on the wireless desktop, so now it is wired as well. I have FM Pro 6.0v4 on Computer "A". I have three [very simple] files that were created. They were stored on Computer "B". During the dropped connection period, I moved these files from Computer B to Computer A. Now I can't access them. I get ""software.fp5" is write-protected or in use. I have a database with one File, Customers, that links to another file, Products. In the Customer file there is an invoice layout that looks up the prices based on the Product name. Some of our model numbers are a little complicated and sometimes it is easier to go to the product file, copy the name of the product, then return to the customer file and paste it into the invoice. The problem is that when we paste D 830pdd.3 we get 10023556. and I have no idea what that is (maybe a record number) Does anyone have an idea on how to fix this?

I would like to create customer numbers that are simple, unique, and only 3-5 digits long. I would really like to be able to start at a number and simply increase by one. This would need to work on a networked solution. I'm new at Filemaker, but it seems the following should work. I'm wondering if there are any problems created by making a seperate file with only one record containing text or number fields. The text or number fields (not global fields but treated as such) would then be referenced on a networked solution to obtain unique, sequential numbers for invoices or customer numbers. Hello, Maybe there is a solution to this but I just cannot think of one. What I have is a Purchase Order Database that has 7 repeating fields with 18 repetitions. The Fields are "Qty.", "Mfgr Part #", "our Item #", "Desc", "Min Pur", "Cost Ea." and "ext'd". There are lookups on our item number that populates the description, mfgr part #, min pur, and cost ea. What I need to do is switch over to a line items database so that way the data can be analyzed better. What would be the best way to export the data into the new database?

I have successfully set up FMPro Unlimited v5.5 to serve up web sites using templates created by using v3 of Claris Home Page with its assistant. These web sites contain a home page, a search (criteria) page, search results (list format), and a detail page. Hello. I am new to this forum, and I have a question about FMPRO 6. Currently, I have repeating fields setup where I populate all of my data. However, sometimes not all the fields will be used. I want to make a layout where it will check the value of the Resolution field. If the box is unchecked I want the data across that row to show up on my report. If the box is checked I don't want the data to show up. In my picture all the data across the first row will show up, but not the second. Also, sometimes I will have all 10 rows populated, but some of those fields will not need to show up. Thus, I don't need to have all 10 of the rows in my layout taking up sp…

I am struggling coming up with a solution. I need to be able to create a unique export file name using a field. Each export will drop a tab delimited file on an FTP site, but the filename must be unique. I can do this manually, but am looking for a way to use the existing serial number field to automatically create the export file name. Any feedback is very appreciated. Thank You Larry

I have four variable called start date, start time, finish date and finish time. I want to calculate the total time but when i do a simple finish time - start time and if the finish time is in AM(the next day) and start time is in PM i get a negative time. basically i want to involve all the four variables to calculate the total time and store the value in a variable. Aloha - We have a simple problem. We have a vendor database that contains names, addresses etc for the vendors. Our other database is for purchase orders. All we want to do is find the correct vendor, and copy their info onto the purchase order so that we do not have to type in the info each time. So simple yes? My question is this: Which direction should I be going in to accomplish this? 1. Write a script (that was fun and almost worked) 2. Set up a relational database 3. Use portals. I am developing a solution for a client who wants to use font symbols in a drop down menu from a value list for Mac and Windows. The symbol desired is a check mark which works great on the Mac system but I can't find an equivalent on Windows. I can't figure out how to get around this on the Windows machine (there doesn't seem to be a suitable substitution). I thought about using a calculation with a global of an image of a check mark but I would have to create over 300 calculation fields and scripts so that doesn't seem like a good option unless there's a better way to do it. Any suggestions?

Hi, I have a FM7 database with 4 tables: AGENCY BRANDS CAMPAIGNS AD CODES I am trying to create relationships between all of these tables based on a numeric ID field in each table i.e. AgencyID, BrandID, CampaignID, AdCodeID. I understand the idea of a 1 to many relationship somewhat from MS Access but am not sure how to do it in FM7. I need an AGENCY realted to many BRANDS which are related to many CAMPAIGNS which are related to many AD CODES. Every time I try it I may get the wrong related table that will have the chevron/crows feet indicating that it is the "many" side of the relationship rather than the one "side". When data is pasted from another application the text formatting (font, size, color, etc.) from the other app. comes with it. How do I force the pasted data to pick up the font I set in FileMaker? Thanks!

Hi all I have recently re-built my machine and forgot to note which fonts I had installed on my system. Now when I load my FM documents they are using substitute fonts in place of the ones it expects to find. Does anyone know of a way to report which fonts are missing from the design/layout. Once I have the names I can re-install the appropriate fonts and get my documents looking good again. Cheers Milan

Not sure what forum would be appropriate for this question, so here goes: I have a client who wants to be able to execute a Windows "print" command on any Windows document, from within FMP. This is analogous to a user right-clicking on a file and selecting "Print" from the pop up menu. We're using Troi File to get file paths but there isn't any Troi command to specifically do this, that I can tell (eventually we want to be able to compile a list of files with Troi File and have all documents open, print and close, in sucession). I have 15 salesmen that access the FileMakerPro 6 database from all over (they use their office computer as well as their own home computer-which limits my use of Auto Enter Creator Name). I have them in a Record_created_by field that has a drop down list of their names(value list). I want them to only be able to access the records that they create. I have tried various variations of limited password protection but everytime after creating a record --they can't see it. We have a database of clinical sites and patients. Some clinical sites have two locations (for instance the UCLA site has two different locations). When a patient is accepted into our clinical study at a site with two locations they are assigned to one of the two locations. I did a reinstall of FM Server 5.5 on a NT server and when I attempt to start the FileMaker service, I get a message "The FileMaker Server service returned service specific error 51" So now FM will not run for me and I am stuck. Any help greatly appreciated.

I have been using Filemaker Pro v3 since it was first introduced in 1995. It does everything I need so I have not felt the need to upgrade. I have installed it in successive computers under Win 95, Win98 and now WinXP. It has performed well under all windows versions untill the last few weeks. In the not-so-distant future of our database, we are going to try to make some changes. One of them is changing a field. It is a key value that is used to relate the Customer to MANY different files throughout the system. The key is stored on one file, and relationships tie in through all the files via this one field. The previous developer used a system that created this field via an increasing index, and what we want to do is change this field to be representative of the main key(such as a customer ID). Of course the database has a "creation date" field, into with I can perform, in search mode, a search for weeks, months or exact dates, etc... I have used FM for about five years but have been out of the loop for a year or so. I am starting with an advertising company and they are ready to purchase a database. They have one copy of FM pro 6 and I have a question about how I can make this work for them. We have a need to track time, several people will need to add time to the job (record). Hi, I'm using a commercial Filemaker Pro database called Ebase (version 1) along with FMP 5 for Windows 98. Last week the database crashed because of a virus and I replaced the entire database (all primary and related files) with a backup copy. The new version appears fine, except the scroll wheels on both computers' mice no longer scroll between records. However then in the related value-list pop-up the second field is sitting there, and if it's not relevant to the field it could confuse users. Is there any other way? I have a question regarding records. Currently, our database integrates a list of new users every year, and we have a list of records that we have to update periodically. The developer before me had made this database, without thinking of updates in the future to the list of users. I purchase lists of businesses (name, phone, address, etc...) and import them into a FM 6 file. Each list has a SIC and SIC_Name for each business. However, there are some businesses on the list (like city governments, Post Offices, public schools, churches, etc...) that I want to delete or just not import. I have a FM 6 database "SIC_Delete" containing the SIC and SIC_Name for the records I don't want. Having problems with windows XP. I am having a problem with my solution in Windows XP but not in other windows environments. Every time I run a find on a windows XP box the system hangs. If I do the same in Win 2000 or Win 98 or Apple OSX there is no such problem.

I have 2 global values displayed as fields on a layout. They are dates that bracket a period of interest. Also on the layout is a calculation based on the two dates entered by the user and stored as the global values I just mentioned. Finally there is a button that when clicked calls a script that exports certain fields from all the records that were found based on the calculated field which was based on the dates. I have set up a script to obatin page number so on a printout I could have "Page 1 of 10". The script is like this: Enter Preview Mode [] Go to Record/Request/Page [Last] Set Field ["Page Number", "Status(CurrentPageNumber)"] Go to Record/Request/Page [First] Exit Script Now the problem is that when I print sometimes I get "Page 34 of 30" which is clearly wrong. Our databases are hosted on FileMaker 5.5 et we use there with Citrix Metaframe XP. With a Win client it works pretty well but it doesn't work with a Linux Citrix client. All others applications works with this Linux Citrix client, only FileMaker causes problems. Are there someone try this settings before? Thx.

Hi, My company is having a lot of problems with FMP 4.1 and sharing databases via TCP-IP Scenario that works. - OS 9.1 user hosts dbase and Jaguar/panther users seem to be able to view and use dbase most of the time Scenario that does not work - OS X (.2 or .3) host dbase and 9.1 guests are unable to access the dbase. Is there any way around this hosting issue with OS X (.2 or .3) and 9.1 users/ What solutions are there? Use FM server or perhaps upgrade all users to a newer version of FM (money is a problem)? I have many different files, and I want to restrict some users to access them. While I have access to all of the files by typing only once on the start The files are related to each other (relational data), and everytime I open them, I have to type the password "couple times" to view the whole thing. 1. I want to enable a pop-up menu when a text field has a particular value. The only way i could sort-of get this to work was by creating a calculation field which would have a simple if statement. The problem is i cannot change the value of the pop-up menu since it is a calculation field it is stuck on the default value of the pop-up menu. Does anyone know another way to do this? One way could be if a script would run when the condition was met in the calculation field (the cal field would be separate from the pop-up menu. can we run a script in a cal field?). suggestions are welcome.

Is there any way to have a FMP 6 database open an external MP3 file and play it in Windows Media Player (this is all under Win XP)? I'm trying to develop a DB that contains MP3 file information with a link/button on the record that will automatically open up the associated MP3 and play it in WMP. What I want to know is if i up the ram on a computer from 64mg to whatever, will it increase the time it takes to pull up a pop up menu. I have a multi-site DB with about 10 users running from FM server 5.5. The link between the locations is not even close to being maxed out. The only task the server preforms is FM Server 5.5. And I do not have the same issue at the same site. The items in the pop-up are indexed and so is the field itself.

I have a product, quantity, fee, and total cost (this is a calculation). When I remove the product and quantity the total cost now becomes $0.00. Which is not totally wrong. The user cannot alter the fee. Having removed the product and quantity and if I were to put a number in the quantity, still having no product, it is giving me a correct price of the product that was last chosen. What I want, i know you cant always get what you want,is to have a total cost of $0.00 not to show up when the fields have been erased. It shows up on my receipt cluttering it up. Hi there, now i have a client that have a LAN with 3 PC. All of them contain FM6 pro and my solutions. I just want to ask what are the best way to open the hosted files from network, create a shortcut of the main file to desktop or create another file on client PC that have a script to open the hosted files. My file is not allowing the creation of new records on the server. The more investigation I do, the more I'm convinced its a server issue. I shut down FM Server, put the files on cd, bring the cd home and create 1000 records just fine except for one thing: My file has a serial number that was normally 24669 and has jumped to 1866000, however there are only 24669 records in the db. Anyone ever seen this? Any clues? In this investigation process I've also learned that the server room a/c isn't on most of the time, that the server is never rebooted, and theres someone there making changes without turning off FM Server each time. What I'm trying to do is place multiple dates with one record using portals. I'm not sure I'm going about this in the right fashion so any help would be great! OK, for some reason I'm having trouble switching between databases. We have a main company database and everytime I switch to a sub database, I usually just maximise the new db over it, then for switching back I just minimise the old database underneath it - so you get a pretty fast changeover. Rather than minimising one, then maximising another window where you get a horrible delay. In this case however, I'm using troi dialog for some dialog boxes in the sub-database but when I exit from the dialogs and try to switch back to the main database, it does it for a second, then the sub-database re-activates over the top. This problem has plagued me for years. Our database is used to keep records that go into our various published books. My current issue revolves around a database of the statistics concerning several hundreds of towns and cities. One field contains the town's population. Because the correct ordering of the records involves using this number (some smaller towns have the same name and thus must be sorted by population as well) I must keep this field as a "number." I am having trouble removing page breaks within my database. Margins, page set-up, etc are all set properly but I continue to have multiple breaks pages appear within the body of my layout. How do I get rid of these?

I am running FMPro 5 on Windows 98. It was running fine before, but for the last month or so it has been taking almost 15 minutes to load up. Once it's loaded, it works fine. The only thing I can think that changed is the IT guy removed a virus from my computer shortly before the slow startup started. Have a problem which I have also found in FMP 4.1 regarding the accuracy of searches. Running under Mac OS 10 I use a name and address database of about 1800 records and need to search with multiple parameters. The search looks for fields that contain a single character within a string in one field and consecutive characters in a string in a second field. Although there are records that match the search parameters they are either not found at all or only some of the qualifying records are found. Has anyone experienced such a situation or have any ideas? I have deleted records and re-input but the problem still exists.

Howdy, I'm trying to create a simple calculation field. The field combines two other fields into one. The first of the fields is simply text (ie: ABC), the other field is a serialized number field (ie: 00123). The problem I'm running into is when I try to combine the fields, using a simple calc, FileMaker truncates the leading zeros in my serialized number (ie: ABC + 00123 = ABC123, no zeros). a) Why on earth does FileMaker drop the zeros? Hi, everyone. I hope someone can help me with this. I have a database (names, addresses, cities, etc). In some cases I have only one name (first & last), and sometimes two (first & last, first2 & last2). I am trying to see if I could write a script so that records with two names would be printed twice, first in format "last, first" Return "last2, first2" and then "last2, first2" Return "SEE last, first". Hello. I just installed FileMaker Pro 5 on a Windows 2000 machine and can't get the program to start. No error messages or anything. The cursor just goes "busy" for a few seconds and it's like you never tried to start the program. However, when I look at the active process list in the task manager, "FileMaker Pro.e" appears as many times as you try to start the program. I can't find anything in the KB at filemaker.com that's been helpful in this issue yet. Any ideas? Thanks!

My problem is that when I do said export, the field names are not exported along with the information. With a large number of fields being exported it is very cumbersome to have to go through and title each column. Is there a setting that I am missing somewhere or is this more complicated than I think? Thanks.

Is there a way to find and replace without having to do this manually for each record and without losing all the other data in the relevant field? How do you print out multiple records so that fields into which data has not been entered do not print? (i.e. no blank lines on printout)

Hello, I have two databases (pricing databases) which were identical 2 years ago. (has price breakdowns for different quanities of a product). One database (database a) is current in these fields the other is not (database :. However i have a lot of linked pictures in database b and don't want to loose these. Therefore, what type of script could i do to take the pricing data from (database a), and bring it into (database : without deleteing the current container fields. I was working on a FileMaker form a while back, and I've just started up on it again. When I go to the layout view, I don't have a background image (of the scanned form) to help me get everything lined up. Yet when I go to the Browse view, I see the graphic. I've selected "Do Not Print" from the menu, and selected view non-printing items from the menu, but I still don't see the background image. Do you guys have any suggestions? It was working before, and I've tried inserting a new graphic to a new field and choosing don't print. FileMaker Server 3 18 Databases 15 Clients We have used Server 3 on a G3 233 MHz PowerPC running OS 9.0.4 with 96M RAM for several years. It was very stable and presented no problems. Records were returned very quick for the most part. This server began having issues and we replaced it with a newer server. The newer server is a G4 350 MHz running OS 9.2.2 with 224M RAM. It was a fresh install of OS 9.0 with 3 updates to 9.2.2. After installing Server 3 and opening the correct databases, we notice terrible lag between screens and pulling data. I have spent quite a bit of timing searching in the forum but cannot find an answer to this simple question. Every time I open the main menu it does not open to the size that I want it on the screen. So the user has to resize the opening window every time. There must be a script command that controls the window size so that it opens the size you need it to open? This makes me think of another question as well. Can the window size be locked so that the users cannot change the window size? Thanks

Filemaker pro 6 on windows unexpectedly quitting when database is accessesed through the web. We tried updating the patches and updates of the filemaker and web-companion but still it quits every so often without any sign or error telling what went wrong. Is it necessary for a global field to be present in a layout for it to function? I thought global fields can still store a value even if they are not present in the layout. But when I deleted the global fields from the layout, my script wouldn't work properly anymore. My intention was to hide the global field. Can somebody enlighten me on this? Thanx, Chard

I am trying to help someone upgrade their data that was stored on an old Mac PowerPC 6300 running OS9. She was using a very old version of FileMaker, FileMaker 4. The manual is dated 1988. The PowerPC began to die and she was given a Dell with a Pentium 4 and is running Windows XP. FileMaker Pro 7 has been installed on the PC, however, we are unable to convert the data. I attempted to convert the data on an iMac using FileMaker Pro 5 and am also unable to do so. Is there any way to retrieve this data and update it into a newer version of FileMaker? Please help.
