Have a set of databases hosted on a FM Server. When one client tries to access the server and open one of the database files it gets a error dialog that reads. File XXXXX can not be open because of Error #6.

Currently I have OS X Server running to run my cgi-scripts, FileMaker Pro Web Companion to run the CDML. I did notice that FileMaker Pro unexpectedly quits on OS X Server. These are both running in on the same machine. I obviously want to improve my stability and at the moment I only have one more extra machine to spare. (2 in total) How can improve my stability and perfomance running FileMaker to host my CDML, databases, and cgi-scripts. Here is what I am thinking. Have FileMaker Pro, open the databases remotely running on a second machine runnig FM Server. Then have the other machine to run the CDML and Apacher Server. Thanks.

  3. Hello everyone, I am looking for non-bias recomendations for a FM Server. Is it more stable to be running under Windows 2000 or Mac OS X? At a previous client's location we setup 2 FM servers 1-Mac solution and 1-Windows 2000 solution. The windows 2000 server ran flawlessly while the mac repeatedly had problems. I personally am leaning towards another windows 2000 server but I wanted the feedback on anyone who has experience with both and can offer an non-bias opinion. No mac vs win wars please. Running FM6 on Windows against FMServer 5.5. Hope this is the correct forum to post this question. Even though at first glance this may appear to be an ODBC question, it's just mentioned to explain the setup. In attempt to reduce the ODBC reporting burden for the FMserver users we created a separate storage location where the last-night backup from our production files is being copied to. The problem is this: The few users who have access to the reporting backup files open this data-set every now and then to run some reports through ODBC connections, so far so good. After they close these files and connect to the FMServer production databases, the client op…

What is a server backup doing, regarding the following: - does it save a data base in a consistent state? - is it possible to restore a backup? How and where to? - is a data base consistent between backups, eg after a cache flush command? - are backups done by simple copying, while FMS is up, unreliable? - what happens to connected guests during a backup, perhaps even having running scripts and the like? what happens to backups scheduled as scripts are running? Where does FMI says something about this, in docs or so? O'course I was looking for this but unfinding it, before post. (I did not search across forums. pointers to them would be answers.) Peter

Hey! We are ready to get users on board with the db's I've written for the office. I currently am on FM5 (MAC) but we will upgrade to either 5.5 or 6 when we purchase the packs for the other machines. There will be 3 heavy users on a total of 10 files. There will be 9 users who randomly "pop on" a read only screen that they will be directed to by their password. Do we need FM Server to do this? Is it strictly a degradation issue, or are there other dangers (stablility, backups, etc.)? Thanks so much!

I have just been on the New Millenium site and have found that they are offering a Toshiba server using Linux, I have never used Linux but everything is all in you even buy it with user licenses, the price looks attractive. As FmServer will be new to me as will Linux am I asking too much of myself? Has anyone any experience with this machine? I would be most curious to hear what others have to say. I do know that I will have to check up on voltages as it probably works on The US voltage which is different to what we se here on the Emerald Isle. …

One computer, which is only in use about 30 percent of the time, hosts the files, two network users use the files throughout the day, and two other users use them occasionally (avg 30 min-1 hr/day). Does it make sense for an office this size to dedicate a separate computer and $1000 to run FileMaker Server? We have crashes occasionally, but for the most part it seems to work. Kind of a long story, I hope someone can help... I just set up our FMP Server 5.0 on a Mac OS X 10.2.4 box, running in Classic. I run the network over TCP/IP. I tested it on the new box, but at a different DHCP enabled IP address, rather than the final live IP address. When I migrated to the server, and a different IP address, TCP/IP failed. After investigating, it looks like the Networking prefernces kept the old IP address, and it wasn't editable. Tinkered a lot....In a nutshell, Now the server will work the first time you start the server.....but if you stop Server and try to start it again, it bombs out stating TCP/IP can't be loaded, and the IP ad…

I know this has been often discussed here but I am having major disagreements with our hardware/networking wonks on how best to deployed FileMaker Server and a variety of other apps in our organization. The trend here is to spec big hulking servers with 2, 2 Ghz processors, 1 gig RAM, 6 Raid HD's, etc., etc., etc. They want to deploy all database servers on this single, $5000+ box. I argue that FileMaker, as well as the other database server apps, want a dedicated, lean, properly scaled box to run on. One particularly sallent (IMHO) reason I offer, is that a failure of this 1 big box (no matter how remote the possibility), would bring all these processes to a halt. This w…

When the secondary monitor is unplugged from the laptop, the images are viewable (on the laptop monitor). Does anyone know why this happens and how to fix it. I'm sure this issue has probably been addressed at some point, but it's sure new to me. If I'm serving a FileMaker database to various users across a network, how do I handle users who need to access the databases from somewhere without a network connection (like from a tradeshow booth)? Is there a way to dump all the data from a served "online" database down to a local database that can be browsed "offline"? Obviously, changes couldn't be made to the "offline" version because then the databases would be out of sync and all kinds of headaches come to mind. Any thoughts are appreciated.

At peak usage the cache hits look fine. Databases are speedy. System has run for over a year without a crash (was running FM Server 3.0 until several months ago). I reboot the system roughly every two weeks. Backs up self to hard drive at 12:15 (daytime). Server gets backed up to DLT1 around 12:40 (daytime) with Retrospect. Both of these operations slow things down for a couple minutes during the lunch hour, but at least we're definitely backed up. A user with FM 6 (v3 upgrade) on Windows 98 claims tha…

I wonder what the "network kb" in the usage of the remote admin means. I use the server speed statistics from anatolifrom one of his earlier posts as my reference. The only thing which is poor in my statistics is the "network kb" (around 300). What does this mean? Does this depend on the hardware - the design of the files or simply the amount of data you send over the network (the more you send, the higher the number of network kb?) Another speed problem is finding results over calculations. Sometimes it's not possible to use indexed, stored calculations. (ex. total of invoice). Does anyone has suggestions ?

After doing some comparison between multi-user with FileMaker Pro Server 5.5 and single-user directly on a client machine, I am convinced that I must have the server set up improperly because of the huge speed differences (I use other databases where the server version is quite quick). To support that, I'd like to use this thread for brainstorming what ought to be in this set of benchmarks, how benchmarks should be crafted, how results should be reported, and what are the key variables that should be testable. …
