FileMaker Pro v7 – v11

After upgrading to FM7v2, I am getting a number of "Filemaker has unexpectedly quit" error messages. This is happening on 2 machines, one of which has a freshly-installed system, so I suspect that it is not related to the configuration of my computers. The database that I am working on is complicated, and the quits often seem related to trying to display portals. Are others seeing this? Do others feel that FM7v2 is less stable than v1? A

Format painter does not seem to work for portals, at least under OS X, FM7v2. I click on a portal, click on the format painter, and click on a second portal, and I get some combination of line width and color that is not related to the original. Is this a bug for other versions of FM7v2? Thx

I have just upgraded to fm7 (from 6) and most things have been fine except for an annoying feature with hidden windows. I have one main file that the user works from - if this file 'uses' another file, that file momentarily flicks into the foreground, even if it was hidden before, or if 'freeze window' has been selected. This did not occur in fm6 - how can I stop this happening? Thanks Emma

Hi, I created a db called tuition The fields in tuiton are: Students Name, Beginning Balance, Payment amount, date of payment, next payment due, amount of next payment. When I click on tuition db from mainmenu, and go to student name choose the student I want, and once chosen Beginning balance automatically enters the balance(previous month balance-payment amount) into the field. I'm trying to import FileMaker database into Microsoft Access (using ODBC driver DataDirect SequeLink 5.4). But all records with ANY numeric field with decimal number - are non-readable by Access (showing message as 'truncated data by decimal value data'). Altough I have reduced (rounded) original decimal numbers to just two digits (X.XX). Please if anybody knows what to do.

how can copy a table from fm7 file to other fm7 file or to itself with other name with keeping filed definitions and datas.

A quick question: does anybody know of a workaround/solution for records that have multiple associated files that can be stored in one container field without having to clutter a layout with a large number of containers. Currently, I seem only to be able to store one file per container field. It would be nice to be able to store multiple files in one container field. Any ideas? Thanks!

I'm a new user. I am having to upgrade an existing application (.fp5) to version 7. After the upgrade, the application runs but every click takes about 10 seconds to respond. Has anyone experienced this?

I have created 3 tables: 1. Songs 2. Collections (of Songs) 3. Concerts I want the capability to show certain collections to be viewed in a pop-up list in table 3. My first try at this was to create a global repetition field that allows the user to select the collections he wants to appear and use in the pop-up list, but it will not allow me to index a global repetition field in order to create a popup list in the 3rd table. How can I go about doing this?

Hi, I guess this is trivial, but hey... I am trying to export data that is pulled into a table (A) from another table (: by look-ups. Other flieds are just pulled in as a related flield from table B. I need to now export this data from table A to an excel file. How can I do this? Since the data is not really sitting in this table the export to a tab delimited file does not work. Thanks, Stephan

Hi! I have a question about serial numbers. I would like to type in manually also, and if I do so, I would like the next serial number to be the number I typed in plus 1. Is this possible (without changing manually in the "Define Database" menu choice)? regards /P

I just converted from 6 to 7. When I fully justify text in a text box some of the letters on the right hand side are getting cut off! If I make the text box bigger or smaller it keeps on happening. Any suggestions?

How does FM handle serial numbers *in different tables*? If they are required to be unique, does this mean *unique in the table* or *unique in the entire file*? That is, can the same serial number exist for two different, *unrelated* records in the same file (each in a different table)? Hi I'm trying to create a script that will allow to duplicate a record and it's related records. The problem that I am facing is that when I duplicate the parent record, I need a way to get the related records of the original parent record. The way I was going to go about it is, Duplicate the parent record Store the new duplicated record id into a global (not sure if this is the best way, might be 6 thinking) Go to the related record of the original parent record. As I understand it, you can set a relationship's default sort, and you can sort portals based on that relationship independently. All of which is nice. Has anyone discovered which is the more efficient, if your two sorts would be the same? Better to sort at the relationship level or leave that blank and sort at the portal level? Is there a way to get the Field Names in TABLE VIEW to align in a column down the left and have the values display as horizontal rows to the right of the field names? I know that Filemaker is not a spreadsheet program, but it is so versatile in reporting that this just seems like it should be a no-brainer. Can anyone aim me to a solution here? Thanks, Jarvis

I am using FM7 on a mac and have a customer layout with a portal to invoices. I click a button to go and add an invoice and then return to the customer layout with the invoice portal. The new invoice record does not appear in the portal until I click somewhere on the layout. After adding the record, I am using the "Commit" option. What am I doing wrong? Thanks for any help!

What function would I use in a calculation to evaluate data in a repetition field with 10 repetitions compared against a field with no reps? I want the calculation to run the comparison on all 10 reps.

Hello, I am thinking of upgrading to FM Pro 7. I now have FM Unlimited 6. I have read some of the literature from FileMaker but it does not clearly answer these questions (nor have I found the answers in this forum, but I don't follow it every day and searching doesn't always come up a useful post): FM Unlimited 6 allows unlimited number of people to access a database over the web. Pro 6 has a severe limitation, don't recall exactly, but something like 10 users in a 24 hour period. How many people can access FM Pro 7 over the web using Instant Web Publishing? Because I thought I couldn't use Global fields for relationships - I had been avoiding them. Then, by accident, I discovered it works - at least for the way I was needing it. I need to set-up a report to be sorted by the values in fields with 3 repetitions. So far it works fine but it only sub-summary sorts the values on the first repetition. Any idea how to fix it! [i have a list of office numbers and each receives one or more newspapers. I need to have it report what office numbers receice newspaper 1, 2, etc. The Newspapers are on a drop list that is assigned to the newspapers field (3 repetitions) I need it to list the office numbers by Newspaper.]

I am a New to Filemaker and am trying to set up a database for my small company accounts to mainly manage client details - job details - invoicing and accounting reports. Trying to build something along the lines of MYOB accounting but a little less complicated. I am totally new to FileMaker and I created a solution for a friend that will help him manage his 1,000-odd member records (turned out great,thank you FileMaker). Well I created this using FMP7 on my mac and went to install FMP7 on his computer.... only to find out version 7 can't be installed on windows ME or lower. Talk about frustrating.... so now what do I do?? Can FMP6 read a .fp7 file or am I going to have to install Win 2k on his computer (last resort)? How can I create a script to auto find all records in a date field within 3 months from today?

I have been using a Cue Cat to catalog a collection I have. Yesterday, though, FM PRo 7 could no longer find the data the Cue Cat inputted. I took out the spaces in-between the two sets of numbers and it found the record (the barcodes I'm reading have two parts). I've been doing this for at least two years now and this was never a problem before. I tried several other programs and FM was the only program with this problem. So, I tried entering the barcode into a text field, instead of a number field, and it works just fine. I hesitate changing the barcode field to text because I don't know if this is an aberration due to a Mac OS update (I just did 10…

I just started learning File Maker Pro 7 and have been doing well but have run into one thing I can't seem to find out how to do. This database keeps tracks of many dates. I would like to have basically a date field that is an array so that it remembers the last 10 or so dates entered (which can also be referenced in formulas and I would actually like to do this for many fields). Obvisouly making a sperate database that is relational would not work because I would need a new database for each record then. Is there anyway I can make fields work as an array? Thank you.

Wow... I'm about 70% through this solution for Texaco, an automotive POS solution and this thing is really looking busy. It's not a converted solution, it's built from the concept up on FM7 with every new trick and gizmo I could find to optimize it. This solution replaces one built in FM6 that had many files and even more realtionships. This one just looks so ******* confusing becuase it's all crammed into one place. I need a monitor the size of my wall to see all this stuff. And - this is with as many advantages I could gain through all the new power of FM7.

Ok have set up a layout for printing with 3 rows accross. All is fine apart from when I want to print only record from my main layout. In this case it only fills one row. How do I get it to fill all 3. Also is there a way to select which row it prints in, i.e top middle or bottom. (All in relation to an a4 label paper, 3rows, 4columns) Thanks

Hi, I wonder if there is a way to allow user to select the columns that they want to see from related tables and display them on the next page whereby they can choose if they want to view as report or export search results. i hope i don't sound too confusing. The first page is actually a search form whereby user can define their search criteria and they can choose the fields that they want to see. On clicking the search button, they will be shown the list of search results containing only the fields that they want to see. I'm running a G4/400MHz/512MB with only FM7 on it, and the application has become so slow that it is a pain to work with. Small scripts that took 0.5 seconds (which I already found to be slow!) in FM6 now can take anywhere between 5 and 10 seconds (changing between files and layouts) in 7.0. It is really horrible. All relations are local, so no wildcards etc., only direct links to files in the same folder. I'm used to PCs and run industrial programs on an outdated systems (P1, 64mb etc) that have about 100-200 scripts running at last twice per second. I do…

I receive the following message opening the database: "FileMaker cannot share files because another user is already sharing files using FileMaker Pro on this computer." I verified that all users listed under EDIT/SHARING had the sharing off, but that makes no difference. Appreciate any help on how to reset this to share files.

Excuse my newbie-ness, but I would like to write a find script that, when it doesn't find the exact fname and lname, returns a found set of the 20 closest records for a portal pick list. This would solve variations in spelling and cut down on duplicating client records. If the user didn't find the client, then he or she would be presented with the option of adding a new record. Could this be done with a pop-down value list that also contained "New" as a choice? How to get the ten closest matches into a value list...worry, worry. Any hints?

Hi, I'm on holiday in France and I got a little happy and purchased the 7 trail>real and guess what? I haven't got the xDBCODBC Client folder! Just been onto Apple support (US) on my mobile and kept holding for 40mins while the guy figured out what to do and then the connection broke. I wonder if anyone have tested the speed & storage comparation between look-up list and related table look-up in fm7 with over a thousand of records? The problem is my database consists of many look-up such as look-ups for city, province, etc... The first approach is to use look-up value list, for each record, it will store the name of the city into each record. The second appraoch is to use related table (still through value list), filemaker will only need to store the ID of the city in the record. I'm getting a odd (at least it seems so to me!) error message; whenever I click on an empty spot on my "Home" layout in Browse mode this error pops up: "This action cannot be performed because the required table is missing." It acts as if the entire layout is a button that's trying to call a script. All the other buttons on the page work fine. Hello, I am very new to using FileMaker 7.0 (3 days) and have a rookie question. I need to import data from an Excel spreadsheet to populate fields in only one of the three layouts I currently have. I am on the target layout when I go to import but when I select the file and see the available target fields they are from one of the other layouts. I have a medical database which I am moving to FM 7 by reconstructing the database and importing the records. I have a main page that holds patient data with a portal to a related table of prescriptions. I have a button which will take me to the related prescriptions. In FM6, I then can constrain find to find only todays prescriptions. In FM7, it says it finds eg 3 prescriptions, but still displays all the prescriptions for this person. I had to "show omitted" twice to get the right display. Any one else have this experience?

I have a question about some (for me) difficult calculation. I have a table with Events. Every Event can have several participants (own table). The event has a limit of how many participants it can have. Every participant has a status, which can be "allowed" or "not allowed" (which is choosen from a valuelist). What i want to do is for every packing list number have the item number field start generating from "1". i.e. Packing List # 398335 have the item numbers start generating from one and continue in increments of one. then when I create a new packing list number....let's say 398337, I want to have the item number field revert back to generating numbers from one. Have just installed FM Pro 7, only to find that the record font display is blurred and hard to read, whereas FM6 is nice and sharp. I have tried the three different font smoothing settings in Preferences, none of which improve the situation. Enlarging the window display is not an option. I have made a solution for my company. When switching between layouts in browse mode the layout twinkles. Some times more, and some times less. This is VERY disturbing! Is this normal FMP behavior, or can i fix this?

I have a small database that creates and stores my companies work orders. Often times the work may run over multiple days, so I used repeating fields for the details, like date, work to be performed, location, etc. Now I'd like to be able to do reports showing what's pending, grouped by date. My hard drive just got totaled by fp7!! I used the Send Email script to send a group email to all the email addresses in the found set. A dialog in fp7 came up and I hit the Send button. It crashed Outlook Express 6 and then damaged the Win XP System Volume Information folder on the hard drive. Now I can't access the drive at all. Anyone know anything about this problem??

I just returned from the FileMaker sponsored "The magnificent 7 Tour" and someone in the audiance remarked how sharp and clear the fonts displayed on this copy of FM Pro 7. For those of us who have been using custom web publishing via CDML, we will of course have to re-do everything. Version 7 no longer supports CDML. And since I dont want to learn PHP or use lasso right now...a lot of existing CDML web pages to convert. FileMaker says they will have a CDML to XML conversion tool available, but do not provide any details as to what it will do, or when it will be available. I have just noticed that users cannot scoll a field using the scrollbars when you make the field a read only field. Am I right and if so does any one know how to get round this as I have several fields that require scrolling but which I do not want users to have write access

I recently converted from FM6 to 7. In my db I use SS numbers as a unique field and is validated to prevent duplicates from being enter twice... with a warning message if the validation fails.... pretty simple stuff. On FM6 the validation occurred almost immediately after entering in a SS number. The message would pop up as soon as you moved to another field if it was a duplicate. Now after converting to FM7, the validation occurs about 20 fields later when entering a dupe or when exiting to another record. I am a complete FM newbie. I tried to link a database to another database using the "Relationship" screen and didn't have any success. I subsequently discarded all of the relationship tables icons in the same field to get back to my original database, however now each field says "table missing". In Layout setup it won't let me select my original database table from the drop down menu. I have a simple FMP 5.5 script that deletes empty records when the file is closed. It is, simply: allow user abort [off] perform find [restore] (were all fields are empty) delete all records [no dialog] This works great in FMP 5.5, but in FMP7, there is a dialog and I am not sure how to work around it. It says, "No records match this set of find requests" when there are no records found by the find. What is WORSE is it gives the user the [continue] and (gasp!) [modify find] buttons!!! This did not happen in FMP 5.5. I have user abort off, but that does not help. How to I turn this message off? thanks, --Tripod

Hi there. I'm trying to discover how to input Unicode characters in FM7.... I'm used to inputting character codes, such as &#x1E63, in XHTML and seeing them render properly in a web browser with the appropriate font (such as Gentium) installed. This doesn't work in FM7, I've noticed..... So how to go about it? Do I need to devise a custom keyboard arrangement that will input the Unicode characters I need, or is there some other way to go about this? Any ideas? All help greatly appreciated.... PJC

Dear friends: Perhaps you may help me. I have built a database with text in MacGreek on FileMaker 6. When I have imported the database into FM7 the new program doesn't recognize MacGreek and it is unable to manage the text. Some glyphs are missing and instead I just see empty boxes. My questions are as follows: 1) Can FM7 recognize all old ASCII systems? I have tried with all text field configuratios: unicode, Greek, etc. Am I forgetting something (some field option)? 2) Is there any way to automatically convert ASCII systems into Unicode within FM7? I have a table of students' marks. Is there a way that I can calculate the average mark? Do I need to create a separate table of the average? Do I use the function average() to make the calculation? How does it work across records? Each record just has one mark. So I need to calculate the average by summing all the records and dividing it by the number of records. How can I do this? I've looked throgh the tech support on fmpro7 and they acknowledge the EMAIL SCRIPT issue where all is populated except the "to" in your email program. I have 4 computers each with their own version of Filemaker 7, sharing a file from a Remote (ethernet link) computer. Making changes to a field remotely, does not show up on the Main File. This is happening either when making changes manually or using a "Script". The File has a relationship which looks for the IP address of the "Original" File. I thought the purpose of remote files was to allow changes over a Network? Making a new record remotely seems to work fine ? ALL Access privileges required for the action have been authorized via a "Priviledge Set"

I am very confused with the new relationships graph. I think I am making this harder than it is. You no longer name the relationship, you name the table occurance. Problem is this is only half of the relationship I am confused about which table accurance go's on the left vs right side. I think they made this more confusing just to have cute looking graph's The most confusing is setting up value list using values from a field sorted by a relationship. In the specify fields dialog box there is a pop menu at the top left which displays table occurances. I have pulled a list of icons from a CAD drawing. This list represents the total number of telephony devices from a floor plan and includes subsequent information answered at insertion time, such as label name, location and etc. The block type of each icon is set up by the CAD program and is labeled with the rest of the information, based on the block type. I want to create a layout which has 4 portals beside each other, representing 4 tables (Clients, Departments, Initiatives, and Projects). I want these portals to be relational, ie. if I select a client from the first portal, the department portal shows only those departments associated with that client. Selecting a department shows only that department's initiatives, and so on. I need help I have 2 tables in FM7, one is basically a demographic table and the other a calendar type layout. The calendar is in list view and has records containing portals that show data from the demogrpahics table. I would like to be able to show some data for the current found record in the demographics table at the very top of the calendar layout. Can this be done in the header ?
