Hi everyone, I am having a problem with my solution that I can't figure out. I have a relational database with 10 files. It runs on a dedicated computer in a libarary in Kiosk mode. The actual databases are hosted on another machine using FM Server. The kiosk opens the files via TCP/IP. I have a button in one of the layouts that quits the application (so that you can close the system when in Kiosk mode). The problem is that when I run the system in Kiosk mode, if I press the button to quit the application, I get a Type 3 error. I then have to restart the machine because it locks up the serial number. If I run the database in "normal" mode using the master passwor…

Hello, I'm wondering if there has been any discussion of (or a plugin for) how to document the Filemaker features that are available to clients with a runtime version. I just got (I hope) through documenting my 10 file runtime application and realized I was going to have to account for all the options in the menu bar. I'd like to see the corp provide some documentation for us to supply users. We'd have to fill in a dovetail to our apps but it would be better than having to reinvent FM's own docs. I'd rather not go to kiosk mode since that means no Insert from Index and other goodies. Also, do developers include a pointer to some of FM's web help? I haven't looked at …

I have seen this question question asked before in the past. However, I can't find the required info when I search the forum - so here goes: Can you give me instruction on how to remove the 'made with filemaker' banner that appears when exiting a runtime app. I did mange to find a post that detailed calling a VB app upon exit. I would prefer not to do it this way if possible. There was previously talk of editing a 'dll' file to prevent the banner appearing. Does anyone know which file/what to remove & the software required to do it? Thanks in advance - this project has been interesting - I've never been stumped so much before!!!

  7. Is there a way to determine if the database file is running under a Rintime or the FileMaker application? I was hoping for a status function or something that would help me make that determination. I have 2 cenarios underwhich my solution will be deployed. 1 will be non-networked situations with no need for the full install of FMP. Bound runtimes will be used. In those situations where multiple computers need to have access to the database, FMP will be used. I need to be able to determine via calculation or script which is being used in order to control functionality. Thanks for any help.

My plan is to both share this database with other faculty in the program (with both WinNT and MacOS platforms) over a network, and to create an online application to the program that would place prospective students' information into the database. Two questions: 1) Is FM Server necessary for the sharing the database across different operating systems? Why no runtime solutions? I was browsing through the topics here and found your response on No. 20/2000 to "Not Happy" where you said that you never do runtime solutions anymore. I have been using FM5pro for a bit now, and am considering purchasing developer because I will be creating a complex single user relat. database for some folks that I was hoping to get more mileage out of as a runtime. I am curious why you do not use this function- wouldnt it save $250 a head for the purchaser? Just wondering.

Firstly, is this possible? and if it is which version of Filemaker do I need to develop with? Note the CD will be distributed to many users and needs to be a runtime stand-alone solution with no licensing costs for end users, i.e. I only want to pay for 2 FM Developer licences for Mac and Windows. The plan is to migrate the CD product to the web hence the use of XML and Flash. Flash is needed to create a more funky interface.

I've been thinking of buying Developer 5.0, but haven't been able to find much information other than Filemaker's salespitch on filemaker.com. I was wondering if there are any other websites that may give more information. Some specific question I have: -1- Does it basically work the same as FMPro when I'm designing the solution? ... or do I have to learn some sort of programming language? -2- Can I make a runtime solution with a relational database (more than one file)? -3- Can a runtime solution be accessed by multiple users over a network? -4- After a database has been converted to a runtime solution, can it be converted back for design changes? -5- Is …

Also, it would be nice to change the actual runtime icon, replacing it with a company logo...any chances I can do this? thanks in advance.

  75. I used FMP Developer 5 to bind a solution on both a PC and a Mac. I then copied these two applications to a CD ROM, for distribution. The Mac version works perfectly, however the Windows version gives me a message about the solution being a "read only" file. I tried copying the solution to the CD on both a Mac and a Windows machine... same results.

Ok here is my position, I've been working on a data base program in FileMaker Pro 4 then upgraded to FM 5 Developer Edition so I could sell my solution to the screen printing and embroidery industry as a stand alone app. My decision too upgraded to FM5 has placed me in a major disadvantage because my competitors offer a solution that was developed in FM3 that will run with runtime engin on a network. Most of my potential customers want to be able to run the program on a network without the additional expense of buying FileMaker Pro 5 for each computer in the network just to run my program!!! Because I have converted these files from FM4 to FM5 I can't even go back to …

On my MAC, (I develop with both MAC and Windows) Filemaker will not open a runtime file by drag and drop. I can drag the runtime file onto the windows FileMaker App, but on my mac, somehow this is not possible. I like the ability to just open the file by dragging it onto the FileMaker App icon, (or Alias thereof), but for some reason I cannot do it on my mac anymore. Wasn't drag and drop INVENTED by Apple? Anyone know what i can do to fix this small bug? Thank you, John

  86. I have inherited a large production/scheduling database running on FMP server 3. There are approximately 25 users (out of 90) with a mixture of FMP v3 & v4. Of these only 5 users do any developing/modifying of the existing databases, the rest just use FMP to view the databases. More of my users require access to the database and as ver 3 & 4 licences are hard to come by (unless you are prepared to bid on eBay etc.) I have decided to bite the bullet and upgrade to ver 5. My question is: Is it feasible for me to: (a) Buy FMP 5 Developer then convert all existing v3 databases (on the FMP server) to v5 and to create run-time versions so that more staff have access…

What I need to know now is how I get it to look at the database, spawn a matching ID and password set to the screen and then remove it from the database. The passwords and ID are already hardcoded into the users area in the server settings under WebStar. I've got a bundled FMP solution that I need to create a windows installer for which will not only place the files on the hard drive, but also create a program group for them so that they can be launched from the Start menu. Does anyone have a good recommendation for the easiest way to do this? This doesn't yet come up for me a lot, so I'm hesitant to spend upwards of $500 to buy Install Shield or Install VISE. If there isn't an inexpensive solution to this, and someone here can do this for me, I might be willing to farm it out. Thanks, Chuck

I design on a Powerbook G3 running FM5 Dev. The related databases run beautifully whether I simply compress them and send the archive out to a coworker with full version FM5 or bind them to a runtime. The glitch comes when Windows users request the same files. Transfering them, via TCP/IP is no problem. I have access to a desktop running Win98 and FM5 Dev. They open without problem and I systematically tweak some of the scripts and adjust some layouts to be more Windows friendly. Everything in the folder looks the way it should before I bind to the runtime on Windows and use Suffit for Windows to create an .exe archive (still no sign of unusual files or folders). My probl…

Does anyone have a technique for developing a main database that could then have modules added to it at a later time without modifying the main database. The added database needs to integrate well with the old main. An example of this is a database of movie titles with summaries that you later decide to add movie reviews to. Thanks in advance for your help.

Can Developer create a runtime for the "other" platform? When running through the menus to creat a runtime, there is a window about the filename extension that seems to imply the I can create a Windows runtime.

I'm a Windows user trying to do the same thing. If you look at the folder that holds your solution, you'll see all the DLL files. Make sure whatever you're using to view the folder (e.g. Explorer) is set to show System files. This is an incredibly poor solution (mixing DLLs with data), since a user may erase a key file. Virtually every application I've seen stores the DLLs in the Windows System folder. Does anyone else have any comments on this? Also, can anyone comment on restoring the application after the file is clobbered?
