Kurt Knippel Posted August 15, 2003 Posted August 15, 2003 Hmm, very interesting. Filemaker has been surprisingly tight-lipped about everything this year and this causes me to either believe that big things are in the works or that nothing is in the works. Let all think BIG!
Anatoli Posted August 15, 2003 Posted August 15, 2003 I'll go with BIG! When I complained last year on DevCon about some problems, the universal reply from FM crew was "wait for FM 7". Also when I was local FM distributor some years ago, this version was promised as the "next" one (6!) and with Unicode.
DanBrill Posted August 15, 2003 Posted August 15, 2003 Some of these would be very welcome changes, esp. in the area of security management. Multiple tables in one file isn't critical, but it would be nice if there were a way to hide minimized databases, or better control their positions. And they must take off the limit of 50 open db's at once. Dan
andygaunt Posted August 25, 2003 Posted August 25, 2003 Greg, DevCon has only just really begun. I would expect news to start to travel later on today (if any) If there is news... everyone who is attending is probably trying to get there heads around it first. Shame FileMaker doesn'tt do a web cast of things like the Keynote presentation. In this day and age you expect this sort of thing from a big conference. If you want pictures, check out http://www.fmwebschool.com/august/fmdevcon.htm
gregincolumbus Posted August 25, 2003 Posted August 25, 2003 Andy Thanks for the link... I have been checking that out today. I figured the keynote ("The New Horizons of Filemaker") would be the big announcement. That should have ended about an hour ago. Not that I am impatient or anything:) Greg
andygaunt Posted August 25, 2003 Posted August 25, 2003 Greg, I know that you would think the keynote would be the major announcement...but then you will have the FSA meeting where more information would be given out. Also, no one knows what the software giveaway is yet...will it be a new version......or will it be 6. Maybe they will give away beta copies of something new and exciting like they did in Orlando 2001 of FM Developer 5.5 to wet the appetites...and get all those developers at DevCon 2003 all wet (did I say that!!!) and excited!! Imagine the possibilities if they did that....all those developers with something new and improved..... the images it conjures are surely not PG13!!!!!!! We unfortunates that could not make it this year will just have to wait for news. Worse than xmas time huh!!!!
falkaholic Posted August 25, 2003 Posted August 25, 2003 bah, the wait is killing me! if FM 7 comes out with what is rumored, your right, it won't be PG13.
gregincolumbus Posted August 28, 2003 Posted August 28, 2003 So there is literally nothing being covered in open sessions about FMP7? Man...what a total bummer:(
Jim McKee Posted August 31, 2003 Posted August 31, 2003 Anyone know what location's been picked for DEVCON 2004? I'm praying it's here in Florida
CobaltSky Posted August 31, 2003 Posted August 31, 2003 Hi Jim, The 'official word' is that is is not yet decided. I daresay it will be announced before too long though, so keep up your 'praying' - you just never know...
Jim McKee Posted August 31, 2003 Posted August 31, 2003 Ray ... I will do more than pray. I will make great sacrifices to the FileMaker, Inc. gods if it will get DEVCON 2004 located here in Florida. Maybe a few of my cherished, relic Macs stored in the attic (in their original packaging, I might add)
LiveOak Posted August 31, 2003 Posted August 31, 2003 FileMaker Devcon 2001 was in Orlando at Disney World. I think Advisor Publications tends to shop for deals for the conference. I sat at a table with a FM financial type (a worker bee). The indication was that the conference fee didn't cover all the costs, the balance was made up by FMI. The requirements for a conference tend to come down to a venue capable of 1200+ people and a non-union town (SF, Las Vegas, NY are all too expensive!). IMHO, the Marriott Desert Spring resort was the best hotel and service I have seen for Devcon (I've been to the last 7 of 8 Devcons). Everything was on time, the restaurants were great, and the staff was absolutely wonderful. You can see why this is a Marriott 5 star resort. The rooms were $129 before tax (the standard rate for these rooms is $350). -bd
Anatoli Posted August 31, 2003 Posted August 31, 2003 I was at the Marriott Desert Spring and apart of wrong billing my CC instead of our company everything else was nice. I would worry about tornadoes and hurricanes in Florida
jfmcel Posted August 31, 2003 Posted August 31, 2003 Why not someplace more appropriate for the end of August -- like Bozeman Mont.?
LiveOak Posted August 31, 2003 Posted August 31, 2003 I think the general idea is the more unconfortable the weather wherever DevCon is, the cheaper the rate. -bd
LiveOak Posted August 31, 2003 Posted August 31, 2003 Actually, that sounds great! We (Steve, Kurt & I) missed you at DevCon this year. Quite a few Forums members dropped by the FM Forums booth to say hello. Brent (-bd)
Ugo DI LUCA Posted August 31, 2003 Posted August 31, 2003 That sounds great to me too. An hour fly or a few hours ride. Unless you were talking about Prague, AR
Newbies SEMJ Posted September 1, 2003 Newbies Posted September 1, 2003 Yes but what about FileMaker 7? Someone on another forum found this page (Walmart Filemaker 7 page) giving a reference to a book for release this month. There must have been something said at the Developer Conference. Did they threaten the families of people who blabbed?
Anatoli Posted September 1, 2003 Posted September 1, 2003 Release date of 9/30/2003 looks good. But what if that was the original release date for FM 7 and then FMI push that further away? Ugo, I would prefer Prague CZ Brent, to much work and the distance It was easy from LA I was there in my mind with you all!
Kurt Knippel Posted September 1, 2003 Posted September 1, 2003 It look to me like that is version 7 of the book, since the cover does not reference any version of Filemaker. Also while what we saw at Devcon look fairly complete, they cleverly skipped whole areas of the application, probably not even done yet. This book would have had to been written months ago and it seemed like the presenters had only had days or weeks to prepare for showing the new technology. Bottom line, do NOT expect Filemaker 7 before middle of next year.
ernst Posted September 1, 2003 Author Posted September 1, 2003 captkurt said: what we saw at Devcon look fairly complete Are you under 'non disclosure' or can you tell us more about this? Curious Ernst.
Anatoli Posted September 2, 2003 Posted September 2, 2003 RE: We are under NDA, sorry. No problem, it is great fun to paste bits and pieces together. I've started in 2000
falkaholic Posted September 3, 2003 Posted September 3, 2003 more info. along the same lines. claims to be out before the end of the year. http://www.macuser.co.uk/?http://www.pcpro.co.uk/news/news_story.php?id=46874
jasonwood Posted September 3, 2003 Posted September 3, 2003 I looked up that book on the publisher's database (I am a bookseller), and the status shows as "Backordered - Not yet Published
Anatoli Posted September 3, 2003 Posted September 3, 2003 This is really funny: 'It might not matter too much to Mac OS X users, given that MySQL and PHP are both free SQL-based databases that work on OS X,' said one source. My reply was: Kick that source in ass. If PHP is SQL-based database then I am Pope.
Ugo DI LUCA Posted September 3, 2003 Posted September 3, 2003 I pretty liked the way Anatoli answer out of this forum. Glad you keep being a smart gentleman here Anatoli.
-Queue- Posted September 4, 2003 Posted September 4, 2003 PHP is a database! Hahaha! I needed that laugh today, thanks.
dharlow Posted September 4, 2003 Posted September 4, 2003 http://www.bordersstores.com/search/title_detail.jsp?id=53710743 If the image is not removed by the time you click on it you should see FileMaker 7 on the book cover. The same cover was on Amazon.com for awhile but then revised after it was posted to several forums. I believe that there is also another FileMaker 7 book showing on Walmart now. Daniel BTW the release date for this book has been revised several times.
CobaltSky Posted September 4, 2003 Posted September 4, 2003 Hmmn... "Sams Teach Yourself Filemaker 7 in 24 Hours" Sheesh!... Contrary to all expectation, FileMaker 7 must be going to be a huge downgrade if you can buy a book and learn it in 24 hours!!
jfmcel Posted September 4, 2003 Posted September 4, 2003 Hmmn... "Sams Teach Yourself Filemaker 7 in 24 Hours" Sheesh!... Contrary to all expectation, FileMaker 7 must be going to be a huge downgrade if you can buy a book and learn it in 24 hours!! Hey, I can teach someone how to use FM 6 in about 30 minutes...
CobaltSky Posted September 4, 2003 Posted September 4, 2003 Hello jfmcel, If you can do more than scratch the surface in 30 mins, then you're clearly a genius and *you* should be writing a book - you'd put 'Sam' out of business in an instant!! But I'm afraid I'm just not as clever as you. I've been working with FileMaker for more than a decade and I'm still learning.
