August 15, 200322 yr Hmm, very interesting. Filemaker has been surprisingly tight-lipped about everything this year and this causes me to either believe that big things are in the works or that nothing is in the works. Let all think BIG!
August 15, 200322 yr I'll go with BIG! When I complained last year on DevCon about some problems, the universal reply from FM crew was "wait for FM 7". Also when I was local FM distributor some years ago, this version was promised as the "next" one (6!) and with Unicode.
August 15, 200322 yr Some of these would be very welcome changes, esp. in the area of security management. Multiple tables in one file isn't critical, but it would be nice if there were a way to hide minimized databases, or better control their positions. And they must take off the limit of 50 open db's at once. Dan
August 25, 200322 yr Greg, DevCon has only just really begun. I would expect news to start to travel later on today (if any) If there is news... everyone who is attending is probably trying to get there heads around it first. Shame FileMaker doesn'tt do a web cast of things like the Keynote presentation. In this day and age you expect this sort of thing from a big conference. If you want pictures, check out http://www.fmwebschool.com/august/fmdevcon.htm
August 25, 200322 yr Andy Thanks for the link... I have been checking that out today. I figured the keynote ("The New Horizons of Filemaker") would be the big announcement. That should have ended about an hour ago. Not that I am impatient or anything:) Greg
August 25, 200322 yr Greg, I know that you would think the keynote would be the major announcement...but then you will have the FSA meeting where more information would be given out. Also, no one knows what the software giveaway is yet...will it be a new version......or will it be 6. Maybe they will give away beta copies of something new and exciting like they did in Orlando 2001 of FM Developer 5.5 to wet the appetites...and get all those developers at DevCon 2003 all wet (did I say that!!!) and excited!! Imagine the possibilities if they did that....all those developers with something new and improved..... the images it conjures are surely not PG13!!!!!!! We unfortunates that could not make it this year will just have to wait for news. Worse than xmas time huh!!!!
August 25, 200322 yr bah, the wait is killing me! if FM 7 comes out with what is rumored, your right, it won't be PG13.
August 28, 200322 yr So there is literally nothing being covered in open sessions about FMP7? Man...what a total bummer:(
August 31, 200322 yr Anyone know what location's been picked for DEVCON 2004? I'm praying it's here in Florida
August 31, 200322 yr Hi Jim, The 'official word' is that is is not yet decided. I daresay it will be announced before too long though, so keep up your 'praying' - you just never know...
August 31, 200322 yr Ray ... I will do more than pray. I will make great sacrifices to the FileMaker, Inc. gods if it will get DEVCON 2004 located here in Florida. Maybe a few of my cherished, relic Macs stored in the attic (in their original packaging, I might add)
August 31, 200322 yr FileMaker Devcon 2001 was in Orlando at Disney World. I think Advisor Publications tends to shop for deals for the conference. I sat at a table with a FM financial type (a worker bee). The indication was that the conference fee didn't cover all the costs, the balance was made up by FMI. The requirements for a conference tend to come down to a venue capable of 1200+ people and a non-union town (SF, Las Vegas, NY are all too expensive!). IMHO, the Marriott Desert Spring resort was the best hotel and service I have seen for Devcon (I've been to the last 7 of 8 Devcons). Everything was on time, the restaurants were great, and the staff was absolutely wonderful. You can see why this is a Marriott 5 star resort. The rooms were $129 before tax (the standard rate for these rooms is $350). -bd
August 31, 200322 yr I was at the Marriott Desert Spring and apart of wrong billing my CC instead of our company everything else was nice. I would worry about tornadoes and hurricanes in Florida
August 31, 200322 yr I think the general idea is the more unconfortable the weather wherever DevCon is, the cheaper the rate. -bd
August 31, 200322 yr Actually, that sounds great! We (Steve, Kurt & I) missed you at DevCon this year. Quite a few Forums members dropped by the FM Forums booth to say hello. Brent (-bd)
August 31, 200322 yr That sounds great to me too. An hour fly or a few hours ride. Unless you were talking about Prague, AR
September 1, 200322 yr Newbies Yes but what about FileMaker 7? Someone on another forum found this page (Walmart Filemaker 7 page) giving a reference to a book for release this month. There must have been something said at the Developer Conference. Did they threaten the families of people who blabbed?
September 1, 200322 yr Release date of 9/30/2003 looks good. But what if that was the original release date for FM 7 and then FMI push that further away? Ugo, I would prefer Prague CZ Brent, to much work and the distance It was easy from LA I was there in my mind with you all!
September 1, 200322 yr It look to me like that is version 7 of the book, since the cover does not reference any version of Filemaker. Also while what we saw at Devcon look fairly complete, they cleverly skipped whole areas of the application, probably not even done yet. This book would have had to been written months ago and it seemed like the presenters had only had days or weeks to prepare for showing the new technology. Bottom line, do NOT expect Filemaker 7 before middle of next year.
September 1, 200322 yr Author captkurt said: what we saw at Devcon look fairly complete Are you under 'non disclosure' or can you tell us more about this? Curious Ernst.
September 2, 200322 yr RE: We are under NDA, sorry. No problem, it is great fun to paste bits and pieces together. I've started in 2000
September 3, 200322 yr more info. along the same lines. claims to be out before the end of the year. http://www.macuser.co.uk/?http://www.pcpro.co.uk/news/news_story.php?id=46874
September 3, 200322 yr I looked up that book on the publisher's database (I am a bookseller), and the status shows as "Backordered - Not yet Published
September 3, 200322 yr This is really funny: 'It might not matter too much to Mac OS X users, given that MySQL and PHP are both free SQL-based databases that work on OS X,' said one source. My reply was: Kick that source in ass. If PHP is SQL-based database then I am Pope.
September 3, 200322 yr I pretty liked the way Anatoli answer out of this forum. Glad you keep being a smart gentleman here Anatoli.
September 4, 200322 yr http://www.bordersstores.com/search/title_detail.jsp?id=53710743 If the image is not removed by the time you click on it you should see FileMaker 7 on the book cover. The same cover was on Amazon.com for awhile but then revised after it was posted to several forums. I believe that there is also another FileMaker 7 book showing on Walmart now. Daniel BTW the release date for this book has been revised several times.
September 4, 200322 yr Hmmn... "Sams Teach Yourself Filemaker 7 in 24 Hours" Sheesh!... Contrary to all expectation, FileMaker 7 must be going to be a huge downgrade if you can buy a book and learn it in 24 hours!!
Hey, I can teach someone how to use FM 6 in about 30 minutes...
September 4, 200322 yr Hello jfmcel, If you can do more than scratch the surface in 30 mins, then you're clearly a genius and *you* should be writing a book - you'd put 'Sam' out of business in an instant!! But I'm afraid I'm just not as clever as you. I've been working with FileMaker for more than a decade and I'm still learning.
September 4, 200322 yr .. its just a using FileMaker 7 book I bet. Anyway, the point in that 7 is on the way soon!
September 4, 200322 yr [color:"blue"]But I'm afraid I'm just not as clever as you. I've been working with FileMaker for more than a decade and I'm still learning. Me too
September 4, 200322 yr When I'd be able to teach FM 5.5 (Sorry I'm lat guys) in less than a year, FM 10 for OSXX will already be released, so I'd bet 2020. But I guess jmCell forgot the Smileys...
September 4, 200322 yr Sheesh!... Contrary to all expectation, FileMaker 7 must be going to be a huge downgrade if you can buy a book and learn it in 24 hours!! Ray, let's be optimistic and assume that FM 7 is going to be such an improvement, that anyone *can* learn it in 24 hours. <snicker>
September 4, 200322 yr [color:"blue"] Ray, let's be optimistic and assume that FM 7 is going to be such an improvement, that anyone *can* learn it in 24 hours. <snicker> Bite your tounge, if it is then they won't need US!

But I guess jmCell forgot the Smileys... It more depends HOW do you teach. You can always find audience for every level of teacher experience. Unfortunately, not what, but the HOW usually teachers don't get at all. There is something in lines like: who knows he/she will do that; whom doesn't he/she will teach that.
September 4, 200322 yr Greetings one and all, 24 hours you say! Now that%u2019s cause for a little FileMaker limerick. You can learn FileMaker 7 in 24 hours Less time than it takes to grow you some flowers You can script something nice and do it in a hurry it%u2019s a wonderful thing no hassle, no worry And if you should come to a tough calculation with such ease of use there is no hesitation Just always remember one FileMaker rule of thumb You can be a great expert even if your dumb! Wasn't it Ray over at Cobalt Sky who coined the fraise "There was a time I couldn't spell programmer and now I are one! Just a little Australian humor...
September 4, 200322 yr Sam's books are one hour sessions for 24 days and usually assume practice time between sessions. So the title is misleading; it should be 'Teach Yourself FileMaker 7 in A Month'. But that obviously wouldn't be as quick to catch your eye. There's a similar book for MySQL, and there's no way one could learn that halfway decently in one day either.
September 4, 200322 yr your dumb Haha! Leaving the verse like this would just be irony in action. Usually I would respond with 'your dumb what? Finish your sentences, dang it!'
September 7, 200322 yr Title of this thread should be more appropriately named filemaker X? A quick search of some book store web sites have turned up some interesting information: How To Do Everything With Filemaker X By: Verrinder; Kazar & Roberts ISBN: 0072231416, 448 Pages Pub Date: 11/2003, Ch. 1: What's New in FileMaker X Ch. 2: Migrating From Previous Versions of FileMaker Ch. 3: Planning Your Database Ch. 4: Designing a Table Structure Ch. 5: Building and Organizing Tables Ch. 6: Working in 'Modes' Ch. 7: Layouts ' Organizing the Data For Viewing Ch. 8: Calculated Fields Ch. 9: Portals ' Creating Views of Related Tables Ch. 10: Scripting ' Automating Navigation Ch. 11: Layouts ' Organizing the Data For Printing Ch. 12: Facilitating Data Entry Ch. 13: Scripting ' Automating Navigation Ch. 14: Multiple Users ' Individual Scenarios Ch. 15: Making the Database Bulletproof Ch. 16: Sharing Data With Other Sources Ch. 17: Sharing Work With Other Programs Appendix I: Active X & AppleScript Appendix II: Shortcuts ' Creating a Template File, Keystroke Combos, etc. Appendix III: Online Resources Appendix IV: FileMaker Solutions Alliance. September 7, 200322 yr Author Could also be that Filemaker X is just a reference to Filemaker running under MacOS X (and/or Windows XP)
September 7, 200322 yr Something is cooking.... In Australia, FMP is offering 1.$100 cash back for ANY license bought before october 2003, including academic - that is a huge discount 2. Price for FMP Developer 6.5 has dropped from $ 1049 -1079 to $ 799 all of a sudden Why might this be? Methinks the old version is getting the big shove out the door before the new version... Someone must know something guys.
September 8, 200322 yr Re: the book cover above -- So Chris Manton = "FileMaker develoer"; Clint Roberts = "FileMaker consultant"; Geoff Wells = "FileMaker Expert"... What's the difference, I wonder... and what's a "develoer"?
