Hi - I'm new to FMforums, but have been reading in here for some time. My challenge is a database, where I need to display some points earned by members in different categories and display their individual points so far - and finally have a tab/layout/button, where new records of points can be entered

You have several options.  You could place a filtered portal on a related field.  You could also just display point records and sort them by member ID. Display the point totals in a Summary Part which is set to display records when sorted by Member.
