Hi there, I don't know if this is a dumb question, I suspect I'm not as savvy about these things as most people here. But here's my problem: I just got a new computer which runs Mac OS 10.3.5. I was previously using 9.2. I have Filemaker Pro 6. When I try to install it in my new computer, it brings up Classic, and will not run in OSX. How do I change this? If I don't resolve this I may resort to Appleworks DB, which I am not as thrilled about, but it works. Thanks!!

  3. I'm testing out FM7 (as a naive user). I wanted to see how export/import would work ... naively thinking that if I exported in tabbed format, then I would be able to import that same file straight into the same file without effort, but when I did so, the order of the fields is different. I cannot seem to specify that the import order matches the existing table field order. Is it possible to do this or do I have to do this manually?

I've been using FM4 for years and went to 6 and was pleased. I just went to 7 and things are mighty slow. My biggest problem is printing. I print wireless to a Lexmark T420. I print 100 or so bills a month and it used to be a breeze. Now when sending it to the printer it keeps pausing and I have to hit the continue button on the printer maybe half a dozen times. With 4 and 6 it was a pleasure to print. Scrolling is also slow. Simple database, 2 entries per customer and 10 simple calculations. I like the new features in 7 but am ready to go back to 6. Am I right in assuming 7 is overkill for small databases? Thanks Hutch

  5. I have been asked to modify an FM5 application that was developed on Windows. I have a Mac using FM7 (trial). When I attempt to convert the FP5 files I get an error message that the files are corrupted or else they are not FileMaker files. Is this due to the fact that I am attempting to go cross platform or is something else wrong?

  7. Hi All I had (what I thought was) a perfectly simple AppleScript to place pictures into container fields based on a field that containing a filename. Unfortunately it no longer works in FM7. Also, I had another series of simple scripts to open the placed pictures into Preview that no longer work. I would appreciate it greatly if anyone has the time/interest to check out my scripts and offer any advice they may have. Hopefully its a syntactic problem. Below are copies of the scripts. Thanks Brad To import pictures into the current record:[color:"blue"] set folderPath to (choose folder with prompt "Import Photos from...") tell application "…

I have an education client with 12 copies of FMP 5.5, mixed Mac and PC. One copy resides on a server (but is FMP 5.5 Client), serving four very light-use database files. The other 11 users launch FMP once or twice a day, connect to the server through FMP's built-in database sharing, update a few things and quit out. Users never create new layouts, add fields, or anything else of significance. Add records, update records, and print - that's it. I don't think the database has been otherwise modified in 2-3 years. The server has been upgraded to OS X, and users are having problems reaching the server, something many others have experienced. The solution is to upgr…

Hello all I'm a newbie to FMP and have taken on the task of performing the above mentioned upgrade. Could you please help me with some possibly silly questions? Currently, we are using FMP 5 on a mixture of XP and Win 2K PCs. One of the Win 2K PCs is hosting the database files over our client/server network. 1. On this PC the LDAC plug-in was installed, when I upgrade/convert to v7 how will I get this plug-in back? 2. Is it possible to run both the v5 and v7 databases simultaneously? Is so how is it done? I tried searcing for licensing restrictions on filemaker.com but couldn't find any relevant information. 3. We want to use the container …

I do not want to reference any EXTERNAL file. Do I just delete all these file references?

I purchased a copy of FM Pro 7 and like it a great deal but the literature which describes the software indicates it must run on Win 2K or WinXP. Can anyone verify that? If that is indeed true I can't deploy it in our office because most users are running Win98 and need to keep doing that until we migrate an old DOS application to FM. Accordingly I'm wondering whether FM Pro 6 will run on Win98? If so I need to find somewhere to purchase FM Pro 6 assuming it's still available somewhere. Can someone help? It would be appreciated. Just wondering: we are running FM6 right now, and thinking about getting a FM7, but only on one machine of the network. Are there any compatibility issues that I should be aware of before taking the plunge? (All except one of the machines are MSWindows; the last one is a seriously hacked SuSE Linux 9.2).

  17. I recently converted my database which is fairly simple to version 7. It has been working fine in version 5 and now I am having trouble with a time field. I use the time fields for calculations of timecode. The fields having trouble function like this. I enter a start time in the format hh:mm:ss and a end time in the same format. The database then calculates the difference between the two and displays it in another field (ie;length) in the same format hh:mm:ss. Now that I have upgraded to version 7 that no longer works. I put in a start time and recieve a format error saying that the time is entered incorrectly. Same goes for the end time. Then when both num…

After upgrading to FM7 from FM6... It was decided that the db needed to be rebuilt, not only because it was running off of 4 different files, but also because it was originally created 6-7 years ago in a much older version, and many new features could be added to make it more effective. The basis of the Database has just been copied, except for the fact that instead of 4 files, I'm working with 4 tables; and updated layouts. For the most part I just copied scripts, and updated them with the newer tables rather then file paths. However, on several cases I have run into the same problem. In FM7 all "Status" functions have been replaced by "Get". Unfortunately, the change of the name also brought in a diminished capacity of some of these functions. Previously, the function "Status(CurrentFoundCount)" produced results that could be seen in related files. Now it is impossible: related files do not display the values in the field "Get(FoundCount)" of other files. Am I missing something, is there another way to display the number of currently found records in a related file (NOT another table within the same file)?

The "Exit Record/Request" script step is gone in FM7. It probably has to do with the new way files can be selectively saved. This is fine, but how do I now exit a field? I need a step that will leave a field without going to another one. What should I use? Interstingly, the FM7 Help files still refers to this non-existent step (excerpt: [...]Make sure that the record you want to delete is active (use navigation script steps), and then use Delete Record/Request. If the current layout contains a portal, use Exit Record/Request to make sure that no related record is selected, then use Delete Record/Request.[...])

I have a 5.5 solution that is to be updated to v7... The 5.5 version is opened via a script (set to run 'On Open') in a 'launch' DB that resides on the user desktop. There exists two versions of the 'launch' db - one that was included in the bind and one that wasn't. Normal users open using the non-bound launch db and everything opens in standard mode. Public computers open using the kiosk launch db and everything opens in kiosk. Up until now that has worked perfectly - there never seemed a need to maintain kiosked and non-kiosked versions of the databases Problem: When I migrate the solution to v7, the whole mess opens in kiosk mode unless I open the databases …

Hi all. First post here. Have been an avid FM (and Mac) user since around 1990. We currently have our company running on a very simple 3 file system (invoices, customers, parts catalog) using FM3 or FM4. We have about 10 computers networked using these files. Most computers are G3's or G4's running OS9. Accounting is handled with MYOB and Inventory is (sometimes) handled in Excel with no direct link to FM. As we upgrade computers (and OS's), the question of upgrading FM comes to the forefront. I'm fighting the "upgraditis" which usually plagues me since I see no need to upgrade. I understand, just barely, the relational aspect of the new versions. I'…

The fm6 version is in kiosk mode, and when I open it in fm6, I hold the 'option' key and enter with master password, I can go to any -related- databse and view them in a normal window. Problem with these files is that they only show themselves in kiosk mode, even when I open them by the master password Any suggestions how to undo the kioskmode from those updated files? In FMP 6 a script in reports.fp5 runs an external script in another file (customer.fp5). Customer.fp5 performs a find on all the active customers. Reports.fp5 then sets fields based on the summary fields of customer.fp5. The relationship is based on a simple field called "key" that has the same value in both reports.fp5 and all the records in customer.fp5 My problem is that when the database was converted to FMP 7 the script does the find okay, but reports.fp5 sees the summary of all records in customer.fp5, and not just the found set. Any ideas on why this is happening?

I have some questions or please help my with reagarding FM6 (PC) and FM7 (PC). Exist any of applications succesfully convert the databases done in FM6 to FM7? The problem affects the databases containing Czech characters (CE fonts). This problem affecting data can be solved through export from FM6 and import to FM7 but all the texts used in layouts stays badly coded - we would have to rewrite about a hundred of layouts which is virtualy impossible - it would take weeks to rewrite all the labels. This problem repels us from migrating to FM7. [email protected]

  34. I have taken the "plunge" so to speak and am about to convert from FMPRO 6.0 to 7.0. I have loaded Filemaker Server 7 on a new server. I have converted a basic single file FMPRO 6.0 DB to 7.0 and loaded it on the new server. It appearrs to be working OK over our LAN. My question is based on something I just read on page 97 of the Filemaker Migration Foundations and Methodologies document. It states that to run Filemaker Server 7 on a Mac you must be running OSX "Server". I am not running the Server version of Mac OSX on this new hardware and do not seem to be experiencing a problem. any thoughts will be much appreciated........ Ray
