FMPerception / FMComparison

Questions and Discussion about FMPerception, a fast FileMaker Database analysis tool.
  1. Started by Dave Ramsey,

I'm looking for some DDRs that I can use to torture-test FMPerception. --The biggest multi-file DDR that I have for testing is 2.12 gigabytes. --The largest complete single-file DDR is 450 megabytes. (I have an incomplete one (missing scripts) that's 574.7 MB) If you've got something larger, and you can allow me to use a copy for testing purposes, I would love to hear from you. As larger DDRs are provided, I'll update this thread with the new numbers to beat. 🙂 Let the games begin!

Hello Everyone, I am working on cleaning up a solution for Theme and Styles. It is awesome that I can see the Style, and the Local CSS to know if it has been tweaked, I've exported all Layout objects to a CSV and all Layouts to a CSV Related them so I can tie them together by Style, Theme, and see what layouts need attention. NOW to my question: Is there a way to see or find the Region Offscreen meta data in the CSV. This would help me a lot in knowing if the Style / Local CSS Matters or not in the effort to clean up. This is a Large solution that has evolved over years, and there is a Lot of Stuff in the Margins of the layouts. Any suggestions would be gre…

  3. Hi, I have a personal license of FMPerception. I have used one of them on the company laptop. If I am going to install some mobile device management tool on the laptop. Could the license key be checked or reviewed by my company? Thank you for any advice.

  4. 1) downloaded FMPerception 2) created DDR (XML) 3) launch FMPerception 4) select File->New DDR Browser, select "Summary.xml" 5) immediate crash 6) MacOS v10.15.7, FMP v19.3.2.206 7) attaching Crash Report as text file CrashReport.txt

  6. Not sure about this. Anyone have a clue as to why this might have happened? Before, I had over 50 "Custom Styles Unused" and after going thru my solution and deleting them, it left me with 5 that have no name. When I select them in FMPerception, all 5 begin with> "button_bar_segment.FM"

"FMPerception Trial Expired Your 14-day free trial has expired. To continue using FMPerception, please purchase a license" Like other threads I am unable to open the Trial version of FMPerception. However, my system meets the requirements. MACOS Sierra 10.12.6 Just downloaded the installer so I would expect to be on day 1 of the 14 day trial license. Please Advise.

  8. Hi, I'm wondering if there is a way to check whether all occurrences of a particular script step occur in scripts that are set to run with full access. I am able to find all occurrences of the script step, and I see how in the list of scripts it indicates if they run with full access. But when viewing the script steps, I can't see that information about the script the step is from. In case it helps, here's why I'm trying to do this: we are not allowing deletes at the table security level for any of the user privilege sets. So any script that deletes records will have to run with full access. I want to make sure that we have caught all of those and set them for …

  9. Started by Gilles Plante,

Hi, I am running version 17.0.2 and for a specific table, when I export to CSV what I get in the file is strange. This is what I get: Row 1 to 11 are almost right (but for strange characters like the A with a tilde). But then from 13 it's getting wild. At some point further down it's getting back Ok for a while and then it turns wild again. What is the explanation for that ? And strangely if I import into FileMaker it's Ok. Thanks

Hi, in the bottom pane where on gets the result of the query, there are two columns named User Defined 1, and User Defined 2. What are these columns used for ? My guess would be that we can defined the contents of these columns, so I searched but didn't find anything about that. Thanks

Hi, I am running version 17.0.2 - in demo mode for not but we will a buy a licence today. In the bottom pane I have a list of fields for a table and would like to get that list inside a FileMaker file. When I right-click on the list - all items are selected - I get a choice Calle Copy for FIleMaker. What do I get when picking this menu choice, and how can I paste in FileMaler ? Thanks

  12. Started by A_K,

For starters I want to say the FMPerception is a great tool. I downloaded the trial and after 4 hours decided to buy. One question I have is what do the different icons in the Quick Find column mean? Attached is a screenshot of the symbols I am getting in the "Quick Find" column of "Layout Objects (Flat)". Obviously the red octagon with exclamation point means something bad, but it's not obvious what that is. I have seen these icons on other reports and when analyzing 2-3 minutes i was easily able to find the issue, but not here.

  13. Started by David Zakary,

Went to use the Diff Processor function for the first time today. Old version local on my machine, dev version on Server. Loaded both DDR's into the Processor window and got messages about "no matching Modified file" and "no matching Original file". Didn't find any documentation about the Diff Processor. The file names are different. Any suggestions?

  14. Hi I'm very pleased with my purchase of FM Perception. I particularly like the Call Chain Diagram. When working in new complex solutions that I did'nt write. I'd really like to take a print of it ... is there a simple way to do this. I cant find one... but that doesn't mean its not there ! Rs Simon

  15. Started by Skin the Cat,

So I'm new to this tool and have what may be a simple question. How do I best compare the differences between two layouts in the same file? I duped a layout and made some changes and now I want to compare this newly worked on layout to the original. I'm finding that somewhat more problematic than imagined. Any ideas/experience? Thanks

  18. Hi all, Figures for broken references differ completely on the Report Card vs the 'Broken References' node if FMPerception. Some figures, such as 'Impacted Layouts' are empty in the report card '--' yet may have '24' in the Broken Refs node. What is the difference between them/how should they be interpreted? I'm guessing the node should be relied upon but I'm having difficulty tying up figures between the two even at a headline level. In this particular instance: 'Fields Impacted' on the report card states '15' yet <Field Missing> and 'Empty Field Reference' are both in the 60's. Thanks in advance, Lee

  19. Since FileMaker 16 now exports a plugin "source" code with the DDR (even if the plugin is not present) for plugin script steps, it would be helpful to have a way to identify a plugin based upon this "source" code. It would be immensely helpful if developers could provide this information. For reference the "source" code that I'm talking about is "FMmp" in the sample plugin source code. In the interest of gathering this information, I whipped up a Google Form for data collection. To reduce misuse, this form is entry-only. Once created, there is no way to edit a record. If the information changes over time (say, you would like users to go to a different UR…

  20. Started by Dave Ramsey,

I'm working on a feature for a forthcoming FMPerception version to manipulate the TopCallStats.log files generated from FileMaker Server 15, and I'd like to get ahold of some real test data to work with. I can manufacture test data all day, and it won't be nearly as helpful as a couple of real logs generated from real servers and real solutions. I'm hoping to find a couple of developers who can generate logs and provide them along with the associated DDRs. For the sake of privacy, it might be best to contact me directly at [email protected]. That said, I'll be happy to answer any questions here or there. Thank you very much!

  22. Hello, my ad-hoc steering committee... I'm shortly going to be tackling allowing an override of the default sort order. Once implemented, there would be a preference to override the default sort order for all(-ish) queries to sort alphabetically, rather than by export / creation order. I would love to get some feedback on this idea, in particular that I'm not either targeting too narrowly or too broadly. My thought is that this could be best implemented using 3 checkboxes. Sort almost everything alphabetically by default Sort Layouts alphabetically by default Sort Scripts alphabetically by default I think that for most users, sorting fi…

  23. Started by Dave Ramsey,

Does anyone have any ideas for things that FMPerception could do with the Touch Bar? My first thought was mapping the back arrow onto the Touch Bar. Also, maybe Refresh? New DDR / New Diff? What would you like to see? P.S. This is not going to suck a lot of time from more universal features. If the tools don't make it *very* easy, I'll wait for the next version of the tools. :-)

  24. Currently, FMPerception will flag a broken reference in a calculation definition, even if the calculation has been deactivated. So, if you have a broken reference in an auto-entry calculation, but the auto entry calculation checkbox has been turned off for that field, FMPerception will still bring it to your attention. I'm starting to suspect that this is overly aggressive. I mean, it's technically correct... The calc is in your database, and the calc has a broken reference... but do we care? I *do* remove broken references in deactivated script steps. So, either way there's an inconsistency. I'm interested in arguments either direction, but I'm probably m…

  25. I am making a new layout to replace an existing one. I want to edit all the scripts that reference the old layout and have them go to the new layout instead. This seems like the sort of thing that should be easy to find in FMPerception, but I don't see how to do it. When I navigate to the layout in FMPerception, then select "Script References" it shows me the scripts that are called by objects on the layout, but it doesn't show me scripts that use this layout. Am I missing something? Jonathan

  26. When first looking at a new system, what indicators would you like to see that will tell you about the quality of the system? When looking at a system you’ve been working on for years, what are some signs of mounting technical debt? I’m looking at a feature to provide some top-level indicators about system quality. Granted, a lot of system quality is about the way in which things are put together, the quality of the design, etc. But are there things that you look for, and when you see them you know it’s going to be a problem? What says, “this is going to be an unmaintainable mess?” Conversely, what says, “somebody had their head on straight w…

Let's start with lots of applause for Dave and Todd for bringing this to market. This is a great tool which opens all kinds of doors for looking more intently with facts at the files we create to highlight improvements we could make and where we can become significantly more internally consistent. It's clever, fast and is going to become one of those 'must have' tools for devs who are serious about getting in and fixing stuff. I think it feels like a highly developed Swiss Army knife, utilitarian but everything in it is well executed and simply presented. Have been a fan of FM-Xray specs for some while so this seems like a logical place to go next, and as someo…
