FileMaker Server General Discussions

I'm running Server 5.5 on OSX Server. I needed to make security changes on a file I have on the server. So I closed the file, opened it with a FM6 client, and made the changes, then closed the client. When I went to reopen the file on the server, it shows already open (grayed out). However, it isn't. On Remote Admin, it doesn't show in the files list, and it also doesn't come up when I click the "Open Files" button. So it isn't open, and it isn't closed. Basically I can't get at it at all. Any ideas? I don't need the file today, but I have to have it running by tomorrow.

We are currently running at maximum (without Server 7 yet). A few times, one of our systems crashes and needs to be restarted. When this happens and the User again tries to run the Opener, we get a message 'Maximum Number of Users Reached' message (Opener just performs external subscript from main file). In the past when this has happened, I kicked everyone out of FM and restarted the Host and it solved the problem. We had it happen again today and we received this message again. But, just as I was posting about it, I tried again (10 minutes after the first attempt) and it let me in!! No users had signed off. Can someone explain how FileMaker tracks this? And w…

Here is a question concerning power outages. We have been having a few lately. I just bought a new APC UPS. It can connect the the server via USB cable. It can then safely shut down the server before the battery runs dry. But because FM Server is not applescript compatible, how would I go about being able to tell FM Server to stop serving the files, thus avoiding file corruption before the server shuts down? Also, what about automating FM Server to start serving files once the server is re-started? Larry

Haven't seen this before. I have a few databases that contain thousands of records each, that relate to a main "Contacts" database via 1 to Many relationship. When I look at the records in a portal on the Contacts database, I see all the records I expect, no issues. When I look in the database directly, there is only 1 Record! The file size is correct. And I can do a recover and all the records appear in the actual database again. Has anyone seen this kind of thing before? The files are hosted on FM Server 5.5. I know what to do to fix the databases now, how do I prevent this from happening? Thanks!!

I'm planning on going to fm7 from fm6 and also going to fm7 server. I read up on it a bit and have the following questions: Our computers are running either windows 2000 or xp, soon they'll be all xp. I have a separate PC available to be the fm7 server with nothing else on it. Our network is currently Novell 5.0. Our fm6 files are on the Novell server (separate computer) and we access them from there currently. I would want to create my new computer as the fm7 server. Question is, once I install the fm7 server software on the new PC (XP machine), how do I get the files over there - just put it in a directory on the new fm7 server machine? Then, how do i see the files on m…

I run a FileMaker Pro application called Traffic Office Manager in FMP 6.0v4 in Win XP. Typically I have no problems, however, for some reason it suddenly stopped properly opening the .usr files! It opens from 1-3 files but shows only blank space on the layout and hangs. .fp5 files seem to open just fine. I have tried the following: Uninstalled XP Service Pack 2. Reinstalled FMP about 4 times. Recovered my .usr files and had them checked on a mac (they are fine). Uninstalled some newly installed fonts. Uninstalled any new apps installed since the last time Traffic worked properly. I am at my wits end!! Any ideas?? [stephanie] shudson…

I made a database for a client using Filemaker 5.5 and it is now hosted on their Filemaker 5 server. I am no longer on contract with them, but am going to be making small additions to the database (i.e. new reports) I would like to buy a copy of FileMaker so that I can work from home. What version would be able to open the files from the server? And is it still available? Susan Douglas

Just got off the phone with FM support, and the Xserve RAID I used to host my FMS 5.5 Server can no longer be used with my current set up of FMS 7. WTF! I cannot move my hosted DBs outside of the Library/FMS 7/Data folder, can't use aliases nor symbloic links. So now I've got a $5000 paper weight, super! Hopefully FMSA 7 will fix this oversight, anyone heard of anything to that effect? d

In a multi-user solution hosted by FM Server 5.5, a scripted FM export file (with summary totals) is created and written over each time the script is run. The problem is, each user who runs the report apparently needs their own specific export directory path in order for the script to work correctly on each PC. Keeping this going has required frequent trips to scriptmaker to "reestablish" the proper export directory path. Any suggestions (other than to upgrade to v7, which we will do sometime soon, I hope)? Thanks!

Currently our organization uses Windows 2000 Terminal Server to host our Filemaker databases. The HUGE drawback we face with this setup is the multi-user capabilities that [seem to] lack. All the files we require to be multi-user are setup as multi-user and anyone working within the LAN can open multi-user files. Remote users can open files, but once they have a file open, it is not accessible by anyone else, until the remote user closes the file. This is causing us big problems and we are looking at our options in removing this holdback. I would appreciate some feedback as to how others are using Terminal Server and FM Server 5.5 and if a solution is even in existence to…

HI Guys, I've got an application which I've developed and I'm going to be hosting it on a Windows 2000 based server using FM Server 5.5. My solution is using a plugin called SyncDeK (www.worldsync.com) which synchronises the database with remote users. My problem is that internally (users on the lan) are only running Mac OS9 and SyncDeK works with Mac OSX or Windows 2000. Due to issues beyond my control, I cant expect my 10 users to upgrade to OS X, so my only option with the current rig is to run the SyncDeK service on the Server machine that will also be hosting my files, which means I need the FM Pro app installed and running at the same time as FM Server. I'…

I'm setting up my first a FileMaker 7 Server running on a Windows 2003 Server, so I'm not sure if I'm missing something but here is my problem. We have a bunch of simple FM 5 files that I converted to version 7. I installed the server and it loaded my files fine. I can see and remote open the files from the FM Pro 7 clients running on Windows 2000/XP. The problem I'm have is when we try to modify records they appears to work but when we view the records again the changes are not there. We don't get any error messages or warnings. Does anyone have any ideas on whats wrong?

Hi. I am currently looking into taking my DB App and placing it on the network for three remote sites to use simultaneously. I have never done anything like this before. I don't know anything about networking in this scale. I know that we are getting a T1 connection and that one site is about 100 miles away, the other 20 or so. I've been reading through some of the posts about performance and some of them get me a little worried. What kind of performance can I expect? Here's a brief overview About 100 tables Simple data entry... mainly a chronological logging system Simple scripts to perform finds, searches, create reports, etc. About 15 users …

I'm hosting a set of dbs with less than 1gb total data size on new PC server. We upgraded from an old Mac OS9 server but are still seeing the same speed performances when trying to access and work on the database over a T1 line. Particularly with field mods (calculations and such) and data searches. Are there any docs that spotlight top issues to address for improving performance, or do we need to just accept some issues when working remotely? With imports/exports, calculations, etc. it processes only one or two records per second.

Hi, We have a system which consists of 75 hosted databases. About four of these databases are around the 1gb mark and the rest a no bigger than 200mb. We migrated our system from a mac server to Windows NT in around 2000 and this solved our stability problems. Then in early 2001 we migrated to Windows 2000 and have been running fine until about a month ago. We upgraded our server earlier this year to an Intel Xeon based system, processor running at 2.8ghz and we have run fine on this system for about 5 months. Currently when ever any major tasks are being performed on the system (find's, updating of information) the service will quit. The message in…

Is it true that FMServer v.7 only sends the contents of container fields if and when a client needs to view them in their active window? In FMServer v5.5 I couldn't include many Photo's in a container field because the client would choke with its CPU going berserk when opening a database. I was told that the old behavior was for the Client to download all of the data in the found set and that this has been remedied in FMSv7.

Hey whats up guys? I posted this earlier to the regular Filemaker Pro forum....Im new here and didnt realize that there was a server section....sorry! Anyway, I am looking to upgrade from filemaker 5 to filemaker 7 and might go with the advanced server version. i like the features of the xml and want to integrate it with a web site's shopping cart and make my own order status thing. Anyone have any tips on how to do this? or any pre-made plug-ins? Also, I found this version on Ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=3773&item=3696065281&rd=1 and was wondering if this was a good price. so i posted this question in the FM…

I just inherited a Mac OSX server which is running FMP Server 5.5. I know it is running because the files are located on the machine and I can access the files remotely at the computer's IP. However, while on the server itself, I cannot tell that the app is running. The FMP config screen does not appear in the Dock. Moreover, when I launch the FMP config, it appears with the file diagram appearing "down" and the button says "Start Server". Is it set up as a service? Is that possible with a Mac? Perhaps this is an elementary question. Could someone point me towards an article or give me a quick pointer or two on getting control of the app. There is onl…

I just recently started a new position in a company using Mac and Filemaker. I am a "newbie" to both. They are going to convert to FM7. I was recently told that FM Server had to run on a "dedicated" server. If this is so, it seems we are going to have to shell out more $ for a server to host accounting and office software. Server is a G5 dual processor. Seems to me it should be able to handle all we could throw at it unless its a software issue with FM. Can someone give me a real answer, as Filemaker doesn't really say anywhere.

If we wish to web-publish, am I correct in understanding that our only options are those? I am unsure if we would go over 10 consecutive on-line users but I know we don't need 100! 15-20 would have been more reasonable, FileMaker. They could have broken it into three categories, I think. So if I predict 15-20 simultaneous max onlilne (with shopping cart and credit cards), I'm looking at $2,499! Is my frustration with 'no middle-ground' showing. LaRetta

My general questions are: 1. How do you rollout changes to a solution that is being shared by several users? 1a. How do you incorporate changes (to layout, field definitions, scripts) you've made to a (recent) copy of a database back into the original database? 1b. How do you make changes to a database while it is being accessed by several users? 2. How can you test changes to a solution without having to a) duplicate the work to implement those changes between a test copy and the production copy, or : risk messing up your production system by trying the changes directly within it? I have inherited a FileMaker Pro v6 solution along with the responsibility for…

Can anyone offer advice? I have for some time (about two years) been using FM Server 5.5 on a G4 Server machine that is also acting as a File Server. After reading the posts I'm beginning to realise that this may not have been such a good idea(!). I will rectify this problem soon, cost permitting. (As an aside, can anyone tell me the difference between a 'standard' server and a rack mounted XServe?) My problem is that now I have corrupt files that I can't open, despite recovering them about 10 times. I also cannot restart FM Server without it freezing. The events log records that it gets to a certain point and then stops. I have to force quit and restart t…

I'm trying to setup FMServer 7 on OSX to host FM databases for my users, who will be connecting to the server using FMPro 7, also on OSX. I've configured an additional database folder on my server to serve up the files, and put a copy of an existing FMPro 7 db in to test to see if the clients can open it remotely. When I go to a client and use "Open Remote File" to try and open my test db, the only db that is listed is the sample one included with the server - my test database doesn't show up. I've made sure that the test db and the additional database folder are assigned to the correct group (fmsadmin) and that the right permissions are set. I also tried…

What's going on? We're currently testing our FM6 files on a new Linux server (previously they were on a Windows OS). When I open the Server hosted files, they all open write-protected (especially when the files are opened via scripts). We've setup the necessary Linux access groups... however, the problem seems to persist. A possible solution seems to lay within directing Filemaker to the file via 'hosts' rather than directly to the file directory. I never had to do this for the PC hosted solution, and it worked fine. Is this something specific to hosting files on Linux? any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Hi - I've modified the layouts and scripts of a customer's DB, tested it under my own FMP 6.04, and now wish to test it on the customer's FM Server 5.5, without interfering with the customer's current DB operation. Hi All, On both an OSX server and Win 2003 Server I seem to have often but intermittent problems with not being able to delete records. This happens in different databases at different locations that have nothing in common other than they were converted from FM6. When trying to delete a record either from FM directly or from a script step, the client just hangs and does nothing. No hour glass, coffee cup... nothing. I once had a client reboot the entire network and there was no change, but then about an hour later the problem just went away and everything deleted normally. The problem doesn't seem to exist when the database runs locally but since it is intermit…

I am developing a filemaker solution to be shared over 10-15 users using FileMaker Server. There'll be about 20-25 files in that solution. One of the files is storing low-res images, no more than 40k each in size, and all in gif and jpg format. There's about 200 in there and already the file size has shot up to 18MB. Between 15 users, with another 25 files, over 10/100 network, using filemaker server, what's the recommended maximum file size? FileMaker quote a theoretical maximum size of 2GB (i think it's something like that) - though obviously that would be a nightmare using the network situation above. What max filesize am I looking at before I start g…

Excuse my ignorance about networking issues, but here goes: I'd like a user to open a remote host to get into their company's network when they're out of the office. The IP address I have doesn't seem to work, and the DNS name I have ("xCompany.com") also doesn't work. Does this have something to do with the company's firewall? How do I figure out what address to use for a served database when prompted to specify the host? In a related issue, I've published the database via a workstation that has the database files open. While at the company, I can just enter the workstation's ip address, and view the database on the web. Outside the company, that doesn't work. …

Anyone have an idea as to the best method for utilizing Multiple NIC cards. In the FMS Admin Guide it states: "FileMaker Server works with your network operating system's ability to utilize multiple network interface cards (NICs). You can use multiple NICs and IP address aliases to provide your clients better access to hosted databases."(pg 9) Is this right?: So I've got two cards, with 2 public & static IP addresses, my DNS maps the same hostname "fmp.server.com" to both IP addresses 10.1.1.1 and 10.1.1.2. Anyone experienced this?: I'm running a test period on a system where a brand new Xserve G5 runs a FMS 5.5, and at this time I have 4 FM6 clients using the system (Power Mac G5s and Powerbook G4s). I'm developing parallel on one of the clients (standard - not Developer) During the weekend the Xserve had "crashed" (a different story...) and after recovering 14 (of 54) files I was up and running again. Hi, I'm feeling the heat. We've got a problem. I have to solve it. 2 months ago we upgraded from FMPS3 to FMPS5.5 & all 40 users are now using FMP6 on Mac OS 9. 1 or 9.22. Server is a dedicated G4/466, 256MB ram, 100bt, Mac OS 9.1. 35 files, largest file is 550 MB & was originally made in FMP2. That db has over 400 fields, and dozens of layouts, as do 2 other db files. Please don't even consider telling me to manually recreate those files from scratch, it would take all year. In all the years we had FMP Server 3.x & FMP 4.1, we never got a server crash. Only when power failed did it ever stop. 2 weeks ago, we had a terrible server crash. It to…

I have several small data bases, that will be used by about 20 users total (with maybe 3-5 on at any one time). What would be the recomended way to set this up? Getting FM Pro for all of the users seems rather expensive, since most of them wont need any design functions. I am contemplating using Pro's IWP feature to set up a makeshift web server for the users to start with. This should atleat get them up and running. If our needs grow, i was thinking about using FM Server on some more serious server hardware as the main web server. Any comments or suggestions?

Good morning! Anyone know how to get a file being served on FileMaker Server to launch as a start up item? We have FileMakerServer set up on a PC with Windows 2000. It is serving mostly Mac platforms. I'd like my Mac users to be able to launch a served file at start up. On the Mac, when I "Connect to Server" from the Finder and choose our regular server called "Porky", after I log on, the server shows up on my desktop. And, thus, I can drag the icon into the Startup Items. Then whenever I start up, the server Porky opens up requesting the password with which I was originally logged on as when the icon was dragged into the startup items. From there I can have any Fil…

Hello, I tried searching but I couldn't find an answer to this. Our server hosts about 75 files. I did a test conversion yesterday and all the files converted okay but when I go to 'Open Remote' and then click on the server IP I only see the first 24 files alphabetically. I've verified that the other files are all open. In fact I can open them if I type in the entire path. (ie fmnet:/xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/test) I can open any file I want. Even when I go to the screen where I can specify which files I want to show up there are only 24 listed. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.

[DOUBLE-POST] Someone had posted a question a while back (maybe a month or two?), asking what error 6 means when trying to access a file across a network. I can find no documentation for this error, and it seems to be an FM error rather than a Windows one, so i will pretend to be an error 6 authority. I think i have an answer, but i can't find the original post. So here goes (hope you're still on the forum, bud). I hope the pooh-bahs will forgive me for double-posting, but i'm not sure where this should go. I have a local file that looks for a database on the network called "Opener.usr". Last night, running that file, i got an Error 6. When i open the Ho…

I am getting a Warning message the a user has lost a connection. On the client side, the user is exiting from a field that is used in a relationship (date range relationship) when he gets a message from Windows that "Filemaker Pro has generated errors and must be shut down." Any ideas as to why this is happening?

I have been allocated some budget in our company to spend on new hardware and I instantly thought about upgrading our database server. I know that the biggest performance boost would be not in the memory, or processor but in the disks. I thought of getting two 10,000 rpm drives and setting them up using serial ATA meaning the data is on both of them - striped or something I think it's called. I know this can be a bad idea due to the reliability factor but if it goes wrong the most we would lose is half a day's work. Do you think that drive configuration would be the best way to improve performance? Rather than shoving 1GB of memory in I think it migh…

I work for an organization that is trying to rid itself of Macs...we have been working on a solution to house our numerous databases and web pages. We were hoping to house databases on a Mac running Server 5, and our web pages on a Mac running Unlimited. Other sections of our organization are utilizing this type of solution VERY successfully...however, since we are no longer able to get Macs, we are starting from square one attempting to do the same thing with Windows. Right now the boxes are running Windows Server 2000 and we are having LOTS of trouble loading Filemaker Server...any advice would be welcome!!!

Another server question... I want to back up my databases to a folder on a shared network drive. When I set up the schedule, it looks fine. I am able to direct the path. When I run the back up, however, I get an event error saying my folder cannot be found. How can I fix this? Could it be something in our network preventing the schedule to write there? I can write to the shared folder normally, but it seems that FileMaker cannot back up to it. Any ideas? Thanks, ng

I just started serving our database on FileMaker Server, but unfortunately I forgot to enter some of the graphics that are defined in global fields. In other words, I have graphical layout elements that are really just global fields, but right now those global fields are empty on the host machine. I can paste the graphics into the global fields on the client computer, but then when I close the program those aren't saved to the host. How do I get those graphics to be stored on the host so that whenever I (or any client, for that matter) opens the database those graphics will be there?

I've had this post in the importing and exporting forum. 39 people have looked at it and I've gotten no replies. Perhaps the people viewing in that forum didn't have an answer, perhaps it's a "dumb" question like "how do I make a database", or perhaps there's no answer. I thought I'd give it one more try here.... I want to update a database by importing data from a tab delimited file on a daily bases. The database is hosted by FMP server 5 on a Win 2000 server. Is there a way to automate the process. I've looked through the scripts, but how do you automatically trigger the scripts?

I just installed OS X Security Update 2004-06-07 v1.0 for OS X 10.3.4 and now when I start FM Server 5.5v4, the events log shows "TCP/IP network initialization failed; the TCP/IP address is already in use or an address could not be obtained." and the FM Server software just waits. All other network apps work, Safari, Timbuktu, etc. During the maintanance downtime, I changed the IP address, but I'm sure there's no other system using the same IP address. The preferences pane of Server Config shows the default IP address correctly. Any ideas what's happening? More importantly, any fix? Thanks.

I am trying to connect to a remote Filemaker database with no success. I can connect to other people's FM Servers from this location, but there is one giving me trouble. Problem is, other people are able to connect to it. - the FM Server in question is running on an OS X machine (Jaguar running FM Server 5.5) behind a firewall with TCP/IP and UDP traffic on port 5003 being forwarded to the machine running the server - I can see the hosted database from many external locations on both mac and pc versions of FM Pro 5.5 or 6 - but not from some locations We have also tried the IP Address followed by ":5003" without success. Does anyone have any ideas? Oth…

Friends - I administratively closed a FMP 5.5 file on the server, removed it to my desktop, modified it, and put it back on the server. When I try to administratively open the file I receive error message "Error Occurred;unable to open file". FilmMaker says the resolution of this issue is; "The cloned database must be opened at least one time in FileMaker Pro to set the necessary attributes". I assumed that opening the file on my desktop would do the trick. However, I'm getting the same error message? The only solution I've found is to reboot the server (not a good way to keep friends). My modified files come up as 'open', after IT reboots the server? Must be a …

We have developed an application using fm7 for a client. The client wants us to host the application on our server and they will access it from their offices. 17 users will access the application remotely, and each have FMP7v2 installed on their machines. Currently, the database is not that big, with any script step having to deal with at most 200 records. However, speed is horrendous over a WAN, but is good over a LAN. I've spoken with filemaker support, and they were not much help, other than to say, it should not be running this slowly. We have established a series of selections from the app to test performance. One such selection takes 4-5 seconds on the LAN. The…

Has anyone ever experienced this ? FM Server 5.5 serving to 3 or 4 users with FM Pro 6. Mac G5 running OS X 10.3.4. Server daemon is set to auto-start using the normal conventional startup file. The server (and everything else) suffered a power fail. On restarting, not only were the statuses of current record ID's reset to mad values (we use these to tag records), but files contained records with field contents from other records ! ! The whole shared database (4 files) was a mess and necessitated a lot of manual reconstruction. Very bad news. I can understand a simple record corruption on power fail, and the loss of currently accessed record is n…

I could use some advice on installing FM Server. The manual is a bit sketchy on setting things up. I'm running FM Pro 6 on three iMacs, one of which is the host, where I'm going to install FM Server. Now will I be able to run FM 6 on the host computer and work with the database? Or must it be dedicated? As for installation, I take it that Server should be installed while logged in as the root user. So I'm guessing that the server folder must go in the root directory/folder along with the database files, rather than inside a User folder. Am I getting this right? Help!

Hi, We've been running FileMaker Server version 3 for ages. Finally are able to migrate to current versions of FMS 5.5 & FMP6. As this has become the Single Most Important computer in the building, we got a Dual G5/2gig to be the FIleMaker 5.5 (v4) Server. The transition is mostly very good. The G5 has 512MB RAM, and is running Mac OSX 10.3.4 Panther. All forms of OS file sharing are off. Everybody uses a single-script "launcher file to open the hosted db files properly. Network is 100Bt. Everybody uses Macs, All are iMac G3/233 or better, many are G4's. Most are running Mac OS 9.22. I set the FMPS ram cache to 35MB (was 40). Total hosted files are 866MB…

If I try to administer our server from outside the network using the FM Server Admin Console, it does not connect. Usually a long delay and no message. Occasionally a message "Could not connect to Server...". Have tried accessing it from different computers - same problem. So I wondered if my firewall settings are OK. I can open the database remotely from FMP7 computers outside our network so I know port 5003 is successfully open and allowing traffic for that. I read in the documentation (see below) that ports 50003, 50006 and 25003 are also used by FM server, but I was not quite clear. Do some or all of them have to be open for remote admin? Thank…

I have established my new FM7 solution (BUSINESS) on my home system. This will be network (not Server yet) for 5 people. An OPENER file (Vaughan's) calls a subscript external to this file. I have been plagued for months with random "FileMaker cannot share files because another User is already sharing files using FileMaker Pro on this computer." The first time it randomly appeared, I was breaking apart Business Tracker. It kept reappearing for weeks after I trashed BT. And now ... it is back. I dump temps, reboot, open either OPENER or BUS…

Yesterday, we had a power outage which killed the computer that hosted my FM Server. We installed it on another machine and put the databases (luckily I had them backed up on a zip disk) into the FM Server directory. Unfortunately, we can't seem to figure out why these databases aren't showing up on the client's host listing. Any ideas? Did we put them in the wrong place? Are there some settings that aren't set correctly? Thanks in advance

Hi All, This is my first post here. I do know FileMaker pretty well, but I am in uncharted waters now. Here's the scoop: I am attempting to move our server from Mac to PC. I have figured out how to move the databases. I need some help though configuring the server now. I have virtually no documentation and my wizards do not function. I am using FileMaker Pro Server 5. So, my question is...where do I begin? On the Mac, as the host, we made aliases of the databases and there is a complicated script (I think) that opens them for use across the internal network. I'm not sure where to begin to host the databases on the PC server. Please HELP.…

i am interested in locking users out of a filemaker database located on a filemaker 5.5 server while the database administrator runs maintenance. i would like to keep the file up on the server but prevent all users except for the administrator from accessing it. in addition, i would like to script this capability into my database so that the database administrator can perform the maintenance without having to do anything too complicated (like, go to the server, close the folder of files, open them locally, turn on single user on the main file, do the maintenance, switch the file back to multi user and open the folder of files back through the server admin window)

Instead of networking 10/1 (when Server 7 is purchased and the new 7 design will be ready), we need to be networked Monday morning. Only 5 systems (7's limit), peer-to-peer (?). This is temp fix just to consolidate 15 Act dbs so sales can clean up their Act (pun intended) in preparation of the new program. Yesterday, I knew nothing about networking FM; today after a 20-hour study-stint I'm dangerous. My home system is not networked so I can't even test to see what it looks and acts like. Vaughan's Opener demo and posts have been invaluable. With my head swimming with information, I have a few questions because some of the various bits of information (and posts) se…
