Interfacing FileMaker as a data source for the web.

  1. Started by newtothis,

Apologies if this has been asked before, until recently I had not come across filemaker and then I was approached by a client who uses FileMaker 8 and now wants to allow certain information from the database to be viewable and updateable online as part of their website. From browsing around the vendor website and other sources I can see quite a bit on viewing information online but can anyone point me in the right direction for information on how to update a FileMaker field from a standard web form. I plan to use ASP with VB, is this possible? Also does the entire database need to reside online or can the database remain on-site in my clients office as long…

Here's a strange issue. I currently have a database setup for IWP (FM8 server advanced) on a Windows Server 2003 box. I can access and navigate the site inside our firewall using IE. I can also get to the database and to the main page when accessing it externally. The problem is when I select any of the links on the main page; it results with an error on page from IE. If I use Firefox (internally and externally) everything works great. Any clues on what the problem might be?

My client wants to migrate his databases to a hosted site. I'm just getting my feet wet here. I saw two earlier recommendations for buddysystems.com and pointinspace - but I want to be sure we will get fast response. I tried a free trial with a company called datatrium, but access is unacceptably slow. So, the big question: is the response speed 100% determined by our internet connection, meaning they're all going to be the same, or is there such a thing as faster servers? If so, who's got em? thanks

  4. I've created a database using FM8. I have it setup so upon opening, the user is logged on as guest and a new record is created. The user can then proceed to enter data into the fields I've created. This works great from the Filemaker application. Then I publish this database on the web and, just as it should, a new entry is created. The only problem is that the user cannot enter data into any of the fields. It seems like they are locked, but I am unaware of any setting that would cause this. Does anyone know what would be causing this? Thanks in advance!

I finally upgraded to FMP7 advanced. My help tells me that now it's OK to use container fields to serve images on the web. Is that the best solution. My typical page contains at least 12 images (90x90 medium .jpgs each) and a few others. All in all the website includes over 3000 images (a growing product database). I want to do it right the first time. My old site running on FMP4 called the images with cdml/html and avoided containers all together. I've read about placing a reference into a container field, is that that a better solution? Oh yea, what's a reasonable hourly rate for PHP help. Much thanks to anyone who has an opinion about this. ran…

Does anyone here have suggestions of which company is good for hosting a FileMaker based web site? I've been working on a custom web publishing solution, and need to find a place to host it. I've looked around, but each of the places I've found doesn't seem to offer much in the way of space. The database to be hosted is going to have only a modest number of records, but many of the records (a few thousand) will be 1024x768 images uploaded by the user. I figure I'm going to need at least 2-3 GB of space, and perhaps more, but all of the plans I've seen offer less than 1 GB for their most expensive plan. Here's what I want to do: In our school's calendar database some events are primarily for staff, some are for staff & students (basically, the school community) and some are for everyone (general public, staff & students). hello folks, I've published a large solution using FMP7SA along with FMP8 Server on an XServeG5. My clients use IE 6.x windows XP SP2. The problem I am seeing is that at times IE displays 10 records of data but shifts lines horizontally so that they overlap. Not user interaction solves this problem. They log back in and everything works fine. Only 2 or 3 users of 50 seem affected and the 2 or 3 can be any of the 50. Has anyone else seen a situation where IE displays the data screwy for no apparent reason. I can't even recreate this even if I try... Cheers.

This is all a bit confusing, but does the external ISP that I use (a Windows 2003 server) need to have Filemaker Server running? 24. Dear List Members, Instant Web Publishing and Custom Web Publishing sound great. But can FileMaker be seriously used as a content management system for a content website with text and images and tables mingled (text runs around the image or table) on any given webpage? Can an image (say stored in a container field) be positioned anywhere on the webpage at a specified scale (say the image stored in the container field has a size of 500x500 pixels, but I want it to be displayed as a size of 100x75 pixels)? Can all these be accomplished in FileMaker in conjunction with XSLT or PHP? I really appreciate your guidance on these.

I'm looking for a way to format an editable new record reply page to make sure that the user edits made there conform to the contents in each database field. Specifically a list that tells what features within Filemaker that will not work when using IWP, such as Conditional Value Lists, etc. Rather than searching throughout the Forums for the info, or trial-and-error attempts? Thanks to all for your help (this is a great place for info!).

We are currently using FMP 5 for all our records - ie client and customer databases, archives, product listings etc. Thing is, we're looking at upgrading to version 7, and at the same time building a new website capable of serving some of the information in the databases to internet users. I was looking at the custom web publishing features of the Web Companion in FMP 5, as I'm not foreseeing vvery much traffic, but I see that this functionality has been removed from all versions of FMP 7 except server advanced. So I need some advice. We're looking at running the database off a dedicated server. Now, what would be the best way t…

I've researched enough to realise this should be done client side with JavaScript but my javascript skills aren't that advanced. Does anyone know how to achieve this? So far I figure that the date field submitted to the database (Booking Date in MM/dd/yyyy format), should be a hidden input field on the form. Then on submitting the form, the field the user completed, tempDate (in dd/MM/yyyy format) should be converted using javascript to MM/dd/yyyy and copied to the Booking D…

Hello I work for a small charity and we manage our website (ww.wrc.org.uk) in-house. It gets updated each week and currently takes 6 or so hours to do. This time is mostly spent entering event details into various tables on different pages. It's a really inefficient way of doing things and as we have filemaker in the office, I thought I'd try to look into using it to speed things up. What I reckon is, we have an events database in the office. In it we store the details for a variety of events we and our members are running. It's a useful tool for the office to see what's happening when, but I'd also like it to 'feed' the website. That's just one example. We also h…
