I've been assigned to add a whole slew of form letters to a database. The letters require merge fields. Most of the form letters are consistant but some are going to change over time. The client will also have to write the occasional custom letter. I'm looking for a best practice suggestion for handling this. I've looked at having each letter be a separate layout but that means that any changes to the text will have to be done by editing the layout; something that I don't really want my users doing. Hello all, I really hate to ask this but here it goes. We currently have a purchase tracking DB for all are softwar that was created by someone that knew FM but has now left the company. I am the IT person for the firm and they assume I know this software which I do very little. In my database I have about 30,000 records, each related to about 3 line items. Each record has a calculation price field that is the sum of the price of the line item. I then have a layout that has a summary field that sums all of the prices for each record. This takes a very long time - Is there any alternative way to speed up summaries? I have a file with about 32,000 records in it and a bunch (about 40) of numeric type fields that are formatted as boolean. I wanted to find out how many of each of these field there are in the data base that are turned on, in other words they are marked. So, clever guy that I am, I created a summary field for a few of them and selected "Total of" as my summary function. Since the fields I am counting have either a 1 or a 0 in them, the total of the field is also the number that are marked. That's the clever part. Sometimes, under one company, I have multiple contacts, but the autofill in the job ticket will pick-up the company and USE the first contact alphbetically. I have tried using the round function, but it will only round to a decimal place not halves. e.g 12.3456 --- 12.5 and 173.76132 ---- 174 I have tried rounding to 2 decimal places and then depending on the last digit change to number using text function. With this solution, we will move it to totally electronic, and much easier to maintain. We are using FMP 6, and I have one table, called MWR. All, I'm looking at integrating recurring events into a calendar. I think this can be done in 2 ways: 1 - Using a repeating field in the calendar data that lists each occurence. This could be achieved through calcs [complex] and the field would the basis for the relationships with the calandar portals 2 - Or perhaps create a second table that lists the occurrences based on the event id. I imagine this would be a messy solution particulary when modifications are made to the recurrences. For my current project, my client need the ability to store credit card information for his customers. Customers pay for things over time, so the company needs to keep credit card numbers, expiration dates, etc. on file. I've never dealt with anything like this before and would appreciate any advice on the subject. The system is networked and accessible via the Internet, so security is very important! Each user will have his/her own login (managed by FileMaker), but surely that isn't enough. How should I store these numbers? Is there a way to encrypt/decrypt them as needed? What functions would I use to grab the contents of Weight and Height and have them divided to get the BMI result? I feel like a copycat, but I'm also looking for a base conversion algorithm. In my case I want to go the other direction. I want to go from either decimal (preferred) or hex to base 36. The goal being to convert something sort of like an MD5 hash into a shorter alphanumeric string. A custom function would be nice, but a script will work. I need to convert base 10 numbers to base 2 numbers and additionally add leading zeros to fill out the converted number to 29 places. My base 10 numbers are a consequetive range given to me. For instance, I may need to begin with 10,000,000 and finish at 10,003,000. The binary conversion of that range is 24 places, so I need to add 5 leading zeros the result. What may be the best approach to combining two or more lists into one? i.e, Word list of a,b,c... Word list of x,y, z combine to a list such as: ax, ay, az, bx, by, bz, ... Let's say I want to update an arbitrary number of records with the same information. I need to be able to find the records that have specific values in a certain field. The value in this field is different for each record and there is no telling how many records will be selected by my user. Estimate line items are entered into repeating fields in one or more of three different catagories: Stardard Products, Custom Materials, and Resale Items. I developed an application using FM5.5 unlimited using html and javascript to allow my users to to view, edit, create and delete records. I recently purchased FM7 developer coverted all the dbs to Fp7 and modified all references to .fp5 to .fp7. I opened all fp7 dbs related to the website before trying to launch the site in a browser. When I tried to view the site in a browser, I received an error message stating that file could not be found. FM7 Pro has a feature called IWP which I was able to use to access my db but all my custom web pages do not work. Why? Is custom web pages not supported with FM7 Dev?

Hi, I' ve got an Order that has many lines of product ordered. I would like to apply a rebate based on this condition : find sets of records (of the Line table) that have the same value for 2 fields (group, template). I imagine doing that with a GROUP BY clause in SQL. and among each of these sets, calculate the sum of a field (quantity ordered) and copy it to another field ("fake" quantity) into each of the lines belonging to this set. I have a text field. 20 users. Each time a guy is looking one branch we paste the branch's id, per.ex, 010062. So if a second guy go to the same branch: 010062 010062 040033 etc Also I have a script if (Patterncount (x;010062) > 2; block entrance; allow entrance) I would like to remove this "id branch" after 1 guy "leaves" the branch, but just ONE "010062" not all. I want to display a sum of all the children - no problem I use Sum(childTable::Amount) and display in a field. I started using Filemaker 5 months ago and I have quite a complicated task to do. I was wondering if there is a way, in a script, to set a particular field whose name is stored in another field. For example if I want to loop through some fields whose names are field1, field2, etc. So I thought I could store a count in a field (called "count", say) and then use it so that in each pass of the loop it sets the field named "field" + count. I'm trying to port a PHP/Mysql application to FM7. I use a lot of PHP arrays but there's nothing like this in FM7. I'm thinking about using a dummy table to emulate the arrays. We've been having an intermittent problem with the user receives the following error: communication with the host was interrupted and could not be re-established (-20). We're running FMP Server on a Windows 2003 server. Our users have windows XP and run FMP 6. The user then has to exit FileMaker. Usually once they get back into FMP and try the email again, it works. I can quite get a handle on this solution. The object is to take a date that is in a vendor form field (date of their approval as a vendor)subtract that date from "Today's" date (no problem there). There may be several of these text files in the folder at the time of import. Right now, I import them and get the text in a unique field per record. In the body of the email text are several numbers such as, "233 Policyholders - Total Premium: $15,593.20" What I get when building the text for the email is this: "233 Policyholders - Total Premium: 15593.2" How can I format the number with a calculation so that the number in the email text will be $15,593.20?

I am trying to work out a formula for a curve, but am completely lost on how to get the equation. x = 10 (time) y = distance y has to move to zero, and the curve is steep at the begging. I have attached a jpg of the curve.

I am working on a solution to calculate Benefit Hour Accruals based on entries on a Timesheet. For each hour that is entered on the Timesheet, the user accrues Benefit Hours (Sick/Personal or Vacation) based on their individual Accrual Rate. The Accruals need to cap out at a certain number of hours for the year, for the week, and at an upper limit (after which they must use some before they can begin accruing again). The only way I have determined this can be done is using scripting, but I would love to do with only calculations. I keep running into trouble with circular references. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

There are three layouts for users to browse: gallery (thumbnails in 4 columns), list (larger thumbnail with some metadata, generic list view), and detail (generic form view, large thumbnail). Question: Looking for some tips on how to convert these two calendars. Need to enter the Hindu BS date and have the AD date calculate and vice versa. Also need to be able to calculate age from birthdate based on the Hindu BS calendar. PROBLEM: I am running into is that if I use a text field to store a Hindu date and use date style formatting "31/2/2056" FMP automatical assumes that the date is entered incorrectly because the second month of the Eng calendar only has 28 days (I am using convert text to date in my calc), this is not necesarily true of the sencond month of the Hindu calendar. I have a large database, imported from Oracle. It contains an ID field which has been manually entered, and is padded with trailing blanks. Inside this string there is a 4-digit serial number that I try to put into a calculation field. My problem: There is an unknown, random number of trailing blanks, how do I strip them out in the calculation? -Baktus

I am looking to setup a simple (well i think it is simple i just cant work it out) stock system. Example: We have parts in our warehouse all with a part number in the format xxxx-xxxx Each part has a holding level and a reorder level. When a part is taken from stock by using it on a job etc how can i have the stock holding level reduce based on the number of each part used. On top of that is it possible to have the database tell a user that part xxxx-xxxx is at its reorder level and prompt her to reorder. Last thing would be to have a check in routine. I'm working on a DB that includes a contact module. I had been using multiple fields in the same table as the individual, and using a calculated result to format the phone number (linked to a phone# style pref setting the a separate pref file). See that calc below. I've just decided that it would be better to place these phone numbers into a related table (in same file) and make it a more general "contact" field that can accept phone numbers, email addresses, InstantMessage screen names, etc. My puzzle is how to still auto-format the phone numbers w/o generating an error msg. for, say, an email address. Hello, I have a range of distances that need to be grouped eg case(n>=600, 1, n<600 and n>=500, 2, n <500 and n>=400, 3, etc through to -600). There are four seperate fields that require this process. And there are another three field groups in addition to distance that require similar processing. At the moment I can only think of creating a case statement for each individual field, even though the calc would be more or less the same for each field group. In other words 16 case statements, each statement with 14 possibilities, even though there are in effect only four calcs being used. Is there a smarter way? Because this will be a daily even…

This is similar to a question I posed in the General FM 7 Forum about two weeks ago. It's so disturbing I have to ask again. I have attached an FM7 file that uses a simple schema for creating related records via globals. You set a global and then created related records via portals. So you can create a record in Table 2 based on the global in Table 1 (which is itself set from a record's key value). Created record in Table 3 is based on global in Table 2 (corresponds to a record). In this example there is no creation of Table 1 records via its own portal. Wondering if anyone can help me!?....... i need to be able to caluclate how late a job is but need to exclude weekends and workdays. i have already been able to caluclate when the next stage of a job is due but the end calc is by date. e.g. job started 16/4/2004 with a 2 day lead time is due 20/4/2004 (17th and 18th are weekend days). i need to be able to show a number value for days late. I want to calculate price for an item based on cost. It works out as follows: If Cost is > or = $100, add $100, then round up to next $9.95. The tables are related via ContactID Contact Table Donation Table ContactID<............>ContactID Name DonationID Date Amount Total (Summary Field) We need to sort or find Names that have a subtotal in given ranges (ie given at least $100, $100 to $1000, $1000 to $5000, etc). How could this be done? I can see subtotals for given names with sub-summaries but I can't not sort or use finds on them. Help will be greatly appreciated.

We have a donation table with fields ID, Date, and Amount We have a calculation field "CurrentYearTotal" that needs to display the sum of all donations (a sum of donations) made within the current year (Jan. 1st to today) Can we do this with out a script and just a Calculation Field? So basically how do I restrict the records that are summed without dong a find. We don't want to do a find because we want to be able to see all time grand total next to current year total. I'll capitulate if a script is the only way to do it but I really prefer not to use one.

I need help..I created a database that tracks expenses and revenues for diff. accounts with categories. However, I am stuck in maintaining a running balance for each account's category. To All FM Gurus. I have a system where i track our Time and Materials against our projects or jobs. This works on the LineItem process via a Portal and todate works really well. At the end of the Project i go through and "Flag" each of the items with are chargeable and ignore those that are not chargeable. I have what I thought was a pretty simple task, but it didn't quite work. I work for a school district. One of the schools gave me a file of course and grade data. They wanted to know "what percent of students passed each course? I created a calculated Case field (Pass Calc) to determine if the the grade was "passing" or not (if passing, "1", otherwise "0"). Hi folks! I'm trying to set up a system for our school that will keep track of attendance. I've got a student db and an attendance db. Set up my relationship and that's working. Now, we need to keep track of attendance specific to each quarter. The student db has a start and end date for each quarter, (classes start on different months, so always a different date). How do I get a summary of how many times a student has been present, absent or tardy for each quarter?
