    I currently run FileMaker 3 under OS 7.5. What is involved in upgrading to FileMaker 6 under OSX 10.2? I remember reading somewhere that the file structure was changed.By the time I do this Panther will probably be available. I have one main file and three related files, with a few calculated fields and a few simple scripts. If complicated, is there a tech info document on this subject?

    When you duplicate a record, is there a way to tell Filemaker not to duplicate a few fields? We have credit card information in our database and we do not want that duplicated over to the next record.

    As I go thru the db's I notice that some of them don't have the LAYOUT stuff on the left and I can't figure out how to get it. Like one DB I know has 5 layouts associated with it but I can't select any except the first one because that whole area is missing and nothing seems to work to bring it back. What am I missing?

    File Maker server 3.0 did an "unexpected shutdown". All attempts to bring the system back up failed. FM Server would start but the files would not open. So I tried to open the primary file with the FM3.0 editor and rec'd this alert box "The access privileges in this file have been damaged or tampered with" LUCKILY our daily backup had run about an hour before this and restoring the backup returned the application to service. Now, I have to know, what caused this. Anybody have any ideas? Did somebody really tamper with the file or is this just another FM bugga boo? Anyway to tell? Can I somehow recover the damaged file?

    I have heard that going back to an old backup, cloning it, and importing records from an export of the recovered file is a reasonable way to avoid corruption problems..... But what if you are constantly updating the functionality of your database (adding new calculation fields, scripts, layouts, reports etc.) and you are not sure when the problems may have started to creep into the file? If you back to an old enough backup, you may be pretty confident, but it may not have your recent structural changes. Is there anything you can do short of taking all the exported data and rebuilding all the scripts (or importing them?) pasting in all the calculations and la…

    I'm hoping that someone will have a suggestion on a different method to edit inserted objects. Currently, I have an inserted object (bmp file) that is activated and edited in Microsoft Paint by the user. The user is working with a tablet pc that allows them to edit the bmp with a pen. This works. However, it is slow as Microsoft Paint has to open and close for each editing occurence. Is there another option to allow the inserted object to be edited with a pen in Filemaker. I have seen a program to allow signature input in Filemaker. Is there a plug-in or program that allows drawing functions in Filemaker? I would be grateful for any suggestions.

    could someone direct me in the direction i should take in order to correctly format bulleted lists in filemaker? it seems as though, when i insert TABS into the document, it will look great on screen, but printing is a different story. all the text gets jumbled around. any suggestions?

    Sorry if this has been answered before, but I couldn't find it. The menu choices to show Toolbars at the top are disabled for some of my databases (but not all). I have no idea why! Is there a setting to change? Is one of my scripts causing a side-effect? A new, empty dbase does not have this problem. I'm not using OSX - I'm on a PC running W2K, using FMP6. ---

    We have a global field in one of our databases that never seems to "remember" when new data is typed into it. The next time the database is opened, the field defaults to the old value. It's shared by FileMaker Server, but we used to have the same problem when it was shared by a regular version of FMPro. Any ideas? I'm about to give up and write an opening script that resets the field automatically, but that shouldn't be necessary.

    My office shares a database that is stored on a server. 2 people were correcting sets of files and unknowingly tried to edit some of the same records. This caused (we think) the database to crash along with the rest of the items on the server. So now, we've been taken off the server until the problem files are fixed. But our problem is that we don't know which files are broken! Or, might the problem be caused by something else? Any suggestions? Thanks much.

    Is there a way that I could creat a script or something so that whenever an employee makes a change to a field in a current record it brings up a splash screen asking them if they are sure that they want to change this record? I don't want to lock them out of being able to edit current records but I do want them to be reminded that they are changing it. This happens because sometimes they think they are in "Find" mode when they are actually in "browse" and before they know it they have changed the record field and can't remember what it was before.     I used FileMaker to create a database for my company's Invoicing/Quotation system. When creating Quotations for companies, there are certain phrases/words, etc that employees will have to use on a regular basis. In the past, Invoices and Quotes were made using Microsoft Word and there was a way of saving certain 'standard-text' into the program and then just inserting it whenever you needed it (to help speed up the process'n whatnot)... is there any way of doing this in FileMaker? is there a way that i can save different phrases/sentences/paragraphs in FM and then just choose to insert it whenever i need it?     I created the phrase-field (i call it "Common Phrases") that holds a list of words (blah1, blah2, etc...) by way of a value-list. so, after creating this field, i'm able to click on it (while in Browse Mode) and choose a phrase (blah1, blah2, etc).   20. Some how I have changed the setting for the enter key to be the key that moves between fields in the layout view. I try to set up value lists and other similiar things and when I "enter" to create a new entry a carriage return is not created, it jumps to the next field. I checked preferences and a number of other places and cannot find where to change it. Can anyone tell me where to change the enter key parameter so that it is return carriage instead of to go to the next field? Thanks

  24. Hello. I'm getting near the end of creating a database solution for a dental practice. It currently has 17 files. A few of the files have a large number of fields(650), scripts(150-200), Relationships(70) and Layouts(44). The program seems to run very well. One of the larger files will probably only hold 3000-5000 records at maximum operation. I'm a little concerned about the complexity of a few of the files. They seem to do well. Should I be concerned about the above numbers? I expect to be networking about 15 stations for the dental practice. Comments or suggestions on how to avoid future problems or maintenance concerns would be appreciated. Thanks.

  25. My wife Amie and I arrived a couple of days early for vacation. The resort (JW Mariott Desert Ridge Resort & Spa) is beautiful, perhaps nicer than the one in Palm Desert. The heat has been pretty bearable (in the low 100s) with very low humidity and a nice breeze. We drove here but got gas outside of Phoenix so we have not yet seen any problems in that regard. The resort have a variety of restraunts, pools, water features and even a lazy river for tubing. More updates to come directly from the FM Forums booth tomorrow!

    I've been using Filemaker for some time now (since FMP3), but this is my first experience with Developer. When I create a runtime solution, it seems to run fine on my PC, but when I load it to another PC, even if that PC is faster and has more disk and RAM, it takes forever to open the application. It appears to be opening when clicked (hour glass blinks), then the hour glass disappears (returns to normal cursor). About 20-30 seconds later, the application opens.     Hi there, I have created a runtime solution system which contain 24 database files. This system i run with kiosk mode. I found that sometime if i keep on using for long time, the system will hang after i press some button. The mouse will change to loading icon as usual, but the system will hang on that time. The mouse still can move but it can perform any action. The only way i can go out is i press(Alt+Ctrl+Del) to exit.   36. I'm moving Filemaker Pro v5.x files from a Mac platform where they were created to a new Win XP platform (running Filemaker Pro v5.x) & can't open the files after they are copied over. The files copy OK & are recognized, but the squiggly indicator comes up while trying to open, then error message. "xxxx file cannot be found & is required for this operation" I can open the files on the Xp when they are hosted on the Mac as a guest. I can also open new files created on the Xp platform OK.     I am a long-time Quark user who has a client who wants to print her greeting card designs "on-demand". Quark would be a steep learning curve for the client and I could avoid making individual Quark templates for each design if I can use FM. I've been experimenting with FM as an alternative. I currently use FM 4.1. There are memory issues using my current approach. The average scan is 8-9mb in size and there are 216 designs involved.     I am working on a relational database to take the place of a (terrible) flat one. The original has almost 50,000 records. A lot of the data contains typos and mistakes which is one problem.     fmp5.5 I am not the biggest fan of the "status area" in my final layout. But I like the features in which it contains. One of the problems I am having is with the "Find" function. I have incorporated a find button into my layouts but am having difficulty trying to link it up to the appropriate action?     Is it possible to get duplicate warnings is real time? I have a file that checks for duplicated names and for duplicated addresses. The warning fields work, except for one thing - you have to go out of a record, and then come back to it (or do a find on the warning field being greater than 0) to get the warning field to show. It would be so much more convinient if the data entry person could see the warning just as the data is entered. Any ideas gratefully appreciated.

    The other day, I was looking at a Filemaker solution for accounting called "EasyAccounting with Filemaker". I found a very interesting implementation of user interface in this solution. They were able to dim fields, portals and buttons on the fly depending on what field or checkbox was filled. I did not know this could be done in Filemaker Pro.     I have to replace (actually re-enter) the contents of one field for each record in a large file (47K records) with the contents of the same field (for each record from a duplicate file. I need to re-enter these data, I think, because this field is a match field for a lookup relationship...and no "lookingup" occurs until the data in that match field (for each friggin' record!) is re-entered.     I'm trying to prevent FM's usual error messages when dealing with clobbered, corrupted or files in need of recovery. It seems that FM ignores script step 'Set Error Capture (On)' and continues to display its own message and the FileOpen dialog. Ideally, I'd be able to trap the error and tell the user to use my Recover Utility which would allow them to restore the file from a backup folder. Anybody have any thoughts? Steve

My company wants to shift from Windows to Linux. Actually, almost 1/4 of out PCs are already running on Mandrake and Redhat. Is there anyway I can run Filemaker client on a Linux environment?     We are using Filemaker Version 6 to develop our software. We use the software to autofill forms using data from a database. We have been developing a new version and recently came across a proplem when opening the file using Runtime. What we started doing was naming fields with either a ~ or a ! in the name. After placing the field into the form, we then run a script that searches the fields and fills them based on these characters. Without going too much into the script just yet, we are running an older version of Filemaker Runtime than what we used to develop the template.     hi, I'm putting together a layout that has these five parts 1. header 2. sub summary - sorted by field A 3. sub summary - sorted by field b 4. body 5. footer It worked great and then I had to go change it. The problem is that the second sub summary (number 3 sorted by field will always start on another page. It will not start directly underneath the first sub summary. There's plenty of room, and it doesn't have the "start on next page option" selected. I had a similar report previously that worked fine, only difference was the fields are now set to slide up. We have decided on a day in October that we will make the switch - from the old system to the new.     I'm adding a subsummary field to an existing layout as part of a subsumamry. All the other fields have little up arrows which indicate to me that they will be generated dynamically. However the new field I've added only shows one repetition and isn't being dynamically generated like the other fields. I noticed it's missing the little up arrow at the bottom of its field border. Any ideas on how to set the field to have the up arrow and be part of the subsummary? Thanks. Chris

    I have a database that contains PDF files. I can double-click on the PDF icon and the file opens. I would like to replicate this behavior online - that is, be able to click on an icon or a button from a browser and see the PDF file. I have created an Open URL script, but I can't run online.     I didn't know where else to put this, the problem I'm having deals with relationships, scripts, all the good stuff. Anyway, enough talk. As simply as I can put it: - Two files, Household Members and Allegations. - If a record in Household Members has a value of 'Commission' or 'Omission' in the perpetrator field, that person (record) is going to need to have a record in the Allegations file. - This will need to be as dynamic as possible. i.e. say someone accidentally labeled a person to be a Perpetrator by Commission, while their field should really be N/A (thereby not needing an allegation record).     Since May a customer has been successfully working with one main and two related files. Yesterday she noticed that 36 of 350 records stopped calculating an age (the field is based on record creation date minus customer-entered birthdate). By afternoon, 74 records, some of which were OK in the morning, no longer calculated age. Test records created today have the correct date. Some creation dates are showing up as future dates (Oct. 03), even though their computer's internal clock shows the right day.   77. Is it possible (in a LAN environment) to allow 2 people to access the same file at the same time? I was thinking that I could place the file on a server, map a drive to that server from each computer, and access the file that way. The only problem I see is that the file allows input and auto assigns a number to each record. If User1 made a new record, then User2 made a new record, they both would be unaware of the change, and the program would assign the next number for their newly created record.......or is this not true?     I had enabled "Personal Web Sharing" on my Mac OS X. This reserves port 80 for its use only. FileMaker Pro's Web Companion needs the same port to display its pages. With "Personal Web Sharing" turned off, the display of the web pages works.

    My databases have started to act a little touchy recently. When I open the database I am getting an error -10000. In my search for answers i have found only a possibility of a lock synchronization error but the error codes do not match up exactly. Searching for error -10000 on the filemaker knowledge base is futile. I have rebuilt all the databases and reinstalled filemaker as well. It helped for a little while but then the error started coming up again. Can anyone tell me with some curtainty what error -10000 is and how i might avoid it in the future? Thanks for your help

    I have a file called 'client.fp5' that opens up in browse mode showing an individual record for a client (name, address, phone, related invoices, etc.) Here's the scenario....a customer calls and wants to place a service call, on this screen I just mentioned, I would like to be able to type in their last name, do a search, if it is found, then I could go to their record and create a new invoice, if no matching record was found, then I would have a choice of creating a new record for this client, after which point I could then create a new invoice.     Here's what I have: Client.fp5 - Stores client info (name, address, phone, etc.) When a new client is added there is a Customer ID automatically assigned to that new customer. Invoice.fp5 - The invoice that gets printed out with the customer info, etc. What I'm trying to do: Right now I can go to the invoice screen and type in the customer ID and the client info will automatically be inserted where needed on the invoice.     I have a client file that when opened, asks you for a password (for editing) if no password is entered then the file opens and the editing features are disabled. The problem is this: I got tired of having to hit enter on the password screen upon starting the app. and decided to go into the document preferences and set it to open the file using the default password. It does that just fine. The problem is that I can no longer open the file to edit it.....can't figure out how to reverse this. Any suggestions?

So we all make a Trailing Grand Summary and put the Grand_Total summary field in there, smile, and be happy. FM is used mostly as a database to track contact with clients & prospects. Is Filemaker Pro 5.0 the best tool for that use? I can't for the life of me figure out why this space shows up... the objects/fields above and below this space have been given the ability to "slide" up using the FORMAT-SLIDING/PRINTING options.     Okay, this one's real weird... I have a database with info on 6 records stored in a particular database. I created a report-layout that contains a TITLE HEADER, HEADER, BODY, TRAILING GRAND SUMMARY, FOOTER, and TITLE FOOTER. The database's records are about companies A through F. The weird thing is that when I view data of Company A in PREVIEW mode, I see that all the info related to Company A shows up on pages 1 and 2 in my report (info i had in the TITLE HEADER, HEADER, BODY, TITLE FOOTER, and FOOTER)... but the info (some bit of text) that I placed in the TRAILING GRAND SUMMARY of this record's layout shows up on page 3 with info of COMPANY F showing …

    I'm not sure where to post this but here we go: I have designed a sales report that basically takes the information out of my database does some calculations and drops all of the information into a form which I created, which in essesnce looks like and Excel spreadsheet. Accross the top of each column are the months and the rows are labeled as separate sales categories. What I want to do is have the report print out normally Jan-Dec, then the following month I want the report to start with Feb and go to Jan. Is there an easy way to do this without changing all of my field definitions along with making 12 separate layouts? Thank you
