FileMaker Legacy fp3 and fp5

What is the best possible way for me to: 1. Have a shortcut on each users desktop so they can open that, which opens FM Pro and automatically gives them a "main menu" type layout which would allow them to go to the different sections of databases that they may use. Would I have a local database on each harddrive that I can create a shortcut for which then will give buttons to press to access the different hosted files? I also want to include a login which will be activated when the user tries to go to a certain section off the main menu. Please help, I'm a noob!

I am brand new to FileMaker. I have a project in which I want to drag and drop selected records (including related records) from one database to another. Ideally a button that opens up to a browse allowing the user to select the record to drag and drop it in another container. Is this possible?

I hope this is the right area to post this problem I am having. I want to know if there are any known compatability problems with Windows and Mac versions of Filemaker 5.5. I am not finding it on their sight and I have not seen anyone talking about this directly. My mac keeps crashing when two people, (Mac and Win users) are logged into the same file. I am wondering if I will need to do a 2nd full OS re-install on the Mac to fix the problem. I tried this once and it did not seem to solve the issue. Hi....I am using FM 4.0 and had a database showing all the sales for the past year (2002) and I thought I was making a duplicate of 2002 for 2003 and believe I had the copy up and wanted to erase the information and give it 2003 name and whatever happened I lost all my sales information for 2002. I tried finding it with Norton Unerase but nothing just found the 2003 file which was blank as I had not entered any info into it at that time. Is it gone forever or is there still a chance with a program for recovery. Any help will be greatly appreciated. I am soooo frustrated! I finally got the lines appearing correctly in all parts of my report with much manipulation. Now, every time I change layouts and go back to the report with the lines there is a new gap in them. IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE!! Does anyone know what I am talking about and/or have any ideas?? I know this sounds ridiculous, but I am trying to simulate an invoice form from a Word document in FM. I did a report layout. I need a border that will start in the header and extend through the body and footer, about 1" on all sides of the final 8-1/2 x 11 printed document. The only way I could figure this out was to manually draw lines through the parts and around the text, but no matter how far I extend the line it simply will not show up in the footer section. The border stops where the "body" stops. What am I missing? Thanks for any insight!

Hi, I have developed (with the wonderful help help of some in this forum I must say) a FileMaker system which needs to be accessed by about 10 people over a LAN and about 10 people via the web. I have read other posts about FM Unlimited and FM Server, but am not entirely clear on when is appropriate. I understand Unlimited allows an infinite amount IP addresses for web access and FM Server is for LAN serving, but I'm not entirely clear on when each is useful. Do I need both or just one of them? thanks! Nate

I am considering developing a web service based on FMU, which would be server colocated. Can I log in as a regular FM6 client to FMU to work with the database like I normally can with the basic FM6? Is there a limit to the number of FM cients to FMU? Also, are there any general rules to determine how powerful a machine (Mac) you need to handle a given amount of traffic?

I went thru the report gen wizard to create a report layout. I am sorting by a field containing a value list. The field I am trying to sort has repititions of four. The report will only sort and select the first choice in the field leaving the others out of my report. Am i going to have to make a field for each choice instead of a field w/many repititions? Please help, I am trying to create a web-based database for my company and have hit a wall. We have two systems (FM Pro 6 Unlimited and FM Server 5.5) and I am trying to get them to work togther. There is a dedicated Mac OS X machine running FM Pro 6 in the "DMZ" and there is a dedicated Mac OS Xserver running FM Server 5.5 (to host the files). The Server is running inside my companies intranet and the FM Pro 6 machine is serving web pages to the internet. The problem is that I am trying to get the FM Pro 6 machine to "see" the hosted files from the Server machine inside our intranet (of course it can't) so that they can be posted to the web. Hi, this is my first post, been using FMP for a couple of days, so bear with me. IS there a way to create a button to insert a date where my cursor is? for example I have created a database with my clients in it. I need to insert the date a lot and get tired of typing it over and over. I was hoping I could add a button and whatever field my cursor was in the date would pop in right there. I am planning to enter a couple of years of horseracing results into a database, information such as the horses that ran, weight, jockey, odds, time etc. I eventually want to be able to search for a specific entry in a selected field. Now I am just requiring any tips before I start. How shoudl I enter the information? Should i put the thousands of horses into one database, or should I keep it in a few smaller databases? Hello! I'm a FileMaker beginner and have started to play around with FileMaker. Can anyone guide me in how to create data entrance forms? Basically, I want my users to add data in a simple form and then press a button which verifies their data before it's recalculated and inserted into the database as one or more posts. I have a relational database set up as Sales (details of all Sales transactions), Contacts (for all non-sales contacts), and Customer Master, with all remaining data on a customer, and portals to the previous two. My Master has about 4500 records, my sales has about 1700, Contacts about 1600 or so. Well, I haven't made any modifications to my DB in a while---I'm too busy making sales! Hi All, After upgrading from FMP to FMU and now using the WSC, I have found one minor problem I don't quite understand. My web site consists of a few pages in the root level folder, and there is also a folder inside that which contains images for use as buttons. My pages use relative linking to call the objects inside these foldes. eg. <IMG SRC="images/clearspacer.gif"> All worked (and still works) perfectly while I was using NAT to access the databases, but if I use the WSC, none of the images load. Can anyone help me fix this? I realise I could move all the images or stop use relative links, but I don't think either of those is the best answer.…

As usual, I'm hoping this vast knowledge base can help me out. Here's my deal: We have reports cards in FM. Many teachers type their comments at home and then cut/paste into the FM report card. Trouble is, it retains the formatting (font, size, etc) of the word processor they created it in. We need the report card to be in a specific size and font, though. I've tried locking the field, merging the field into a text box formatted with our text formatting, but I can' seem to strip away the old text styles. Is the only option to go in and manaully select all, then change the text style? Please say it ain't so....

Hi ! I am having problem using the If function of filemaker pro. I have defined a text field called Fin.Aid Student which has value pop list YES, NO. I have defined another field called FinaidSecond which is a calculation field. The formula used is If( Fin.Aid Student = "YES", "No Second Extension Allowed", " ") I have made the calculation result option box as text. This does not work when i test it. Whether the Fin.Aid Student field selected is YES or NO it always displayes No Second Extension Allowed in the FinaidSecond field. What could be the problem with this ?

Hi ! I have 2 fields State and Zip Code. When a user enters State information for a new record I want the corresponding Zip Code to be automatically displayed in the ZipCode field. I'm developing a custom FM inventory system for a friend. After reading around about different ways to do it I'm left with a few questions, and have an idea about a slightly different way to do it that I'd like to get feed back on. An inventory system that just keeps a table of items and their count is frowned upon, and for good reason, it's hard to tell if the data got corrupted. Hi ! I was wondering how to generate fields dynamically in FileMaker Pro. Based on the value of one field called no. of lessons I want to generate that many more new fields giving descriptions. For eg if the no. of lessons is 7 then there should be 7 more fields created each giving dates & details of the lessons. If the no. of lessons field value is 10 for another record then i should generate 10 more fields giving details of the 10 lessons. Could anyone help me on how to go about this requirement.

What do the experts say regarding Status Bar / No Status Bar? You see many different solutions today. Some show the standard FMP status bar on the left and some hide it. Other than aesthetics and allowing additional space on the window. What rational would one use to determine the way to go with a custom solution? We have a school student/address database setup with about 500 students. Previously this was used by one or two secretaries, but now that we have FileMaker Server we would like teachers to be able to look up student addresses if needed. The catch is that we only want teachers to be able to see addresses for students in their own classes. FileMaker Server seems to have nothing built into it for permissions, and the permissions built into FileMaker don't seem appropriate for this either. It was suggested that we may need to make a form for each and every teacher and write FileMaker scripting that limits teachers to seeing their own form. Is this correct? This seems like a…

Hi, I've been reading on Filemakers site trying to figure out which filemaker we need were I work. I work in this guys home office where he has 4 computers and a laptop networked. If we both want to be able to access the database, from any of the 5 computers, do we need 5 Filemaker pro licenses? I'm now working on a PC after 13 years on a Mac. It's an adjustment. . . I have a DB in which I keep some text forms. I print them out, then fill them in with pencil. For years I have created the forms in PageMaker, then copy and paste the form into FileMaker without a problem. The forms are nothing more than text with some column lines. FM on the PC is not allowing me to paste the entire form - it won't bring over the lines. Am I missing a step or something? Maxwell Morlay

I am using Filemaker 5.5 on a server without the aid of Filemaker Server. The files are kept on the server and our 7 users access the server use a tcp/ip connection to access the databases. This enables the databases to be backed up nightly. We have this annoying problem. Occasionally when we open the Databases they open as read-only. This doesn't happen all the time, and rebooting the client computer usually fixes it for the moment. Does anyone know how I can stop this from happening all together...my boss is getting rather annoyed. thanks! KNH

However, I need to create a field that will contain several references to scientific papers. I'd like each of these to be able to link out to the paper itself in either pdf or word format. We have a very complex group of databases that seems to be experiencing some weird problems. We have one calculation field that is the sum of several fields but it doesn't always do the calculation. If we search for records that contain data in one of the other fields there should be a subtotal in the "bad " field. What is strange is that sometimes it does not do the subtotal until you browse another record and then come back. This same subtotal is included on a sales summary and in the summary it does add up our totals right. I have a file that is an address book and has .fp4 extension. Now we have a system with 15 files that was developed using FileMaker 6. The company I work for is currently using Access for users access a postgres database. The users are mostly OS9 and we use Citrix server for them to use Access (currently Windows only). The system isn't perfect and we need to upgrade to a newer version that should help the problems we're having. The problem is, the newer Citrix will cost a few thousand dollars and will still be a round about system. Maybe I am doing something wrong... but, when I try to install FM6 in OS X onto a new computer (G4, 1.25Ghz with 2GB of RAM), the following message appears "The Software to be installed requires 8 MB of total machine memory (RAM), which this computer does not have." What can I do about this? Help

I have been told by a software supplier that a Filemaker session is hogging the (Windows) clipboard thus preventing the software from printing. I'm sorry that I can't be more precise but it is a problem I have inherited. I am also told that a large UK retailer had a similar problem and overcame it. So the software company may be onto something. Does Filemaker 'hog' the clipboard? If so is there any way to stop it?

Hi, Is there a limit to the number of records that can be displayed correctly in Table View? The Table View starts to behave strangely when there are more than 3855 records in the foundset i.e. the information displayed in every subsequent record is incorrect (copied from another record). This behaviour is not specific to one database as I have created a test database with only 1 field and I get exactly the same result. Regards Pat

First time poster, so this may be a little basic for some of you. I've got some FileMaker experience doing simple projects at home and at work, but not enough apparently to tackle this situation. I am running FM Developer 6.0v3 on Mac OS 10.2.2, and have been having Filemaker unexpectedly quit. This happens fairly often when I mouse-click on a value list -- happens on different lists in different files. I have found the app will quit even when I am editting the list and mouse-click OK or use the enter key. If I select an item in the value list with the arrow keys and use the return key, there is no problem. Anyone have ideas? Thanks! Dan

I have a database in 5.5 that is used to enter Purchase Orders. When I created it, I created a Header with vendor and customer info, a Body with repeating fields for Qty, Price, Description, etc, and a Footer with a Total Amount field and a few other things. I set up the repeating fields with a repetition of 14, and everything displays and prints perfect. I need to be able to have at least 75 lines for entering the line item detail info into the Body, but when I set the repeating fields to 75, they extend way beyond the borders of the page. I have been having some issues with clients (FMP 4.0v1) trying to connect to database (hosted by FM Server 3.0v3) and also sometimes trying to print (access violation c0000005, in both cases). After researching both here and on the filemaker site (yup, I've seen article 104759), it seems there are multiple possibilities (i.e. printer drivers - we do have HP Laser Jet 5s). Before I get into changing the drivers and all that, I think it is most important to have the lastest versions of both the client app and server app installed. But our products are so outdated, I cannot seem to find updaters on the filemaker website. Anyone know where I could find them?

I just started learning about FileMaker and the web. Here's an idea I had, wondering if this would work (or work securely). I don't actually need to do this, I'd just like to know how/if it could be done should I decide to do it... Customers could go to our web site to check their account balance. They would enter their client ID and postal code into a search which requires exact match for security. They would then see a list of invoices (showing only invoice number, date, total, paid, and due... no personal information). What exactly are the benefits to using two machines to host FileMaker Server and FileMaker Unlimited? Performance-wise, I would like to think a brand new Xserve would be able to handle the two of them(?), but what about security concerns? Can you also clarify my understanding of FileMaker Unlimited? I was working on this database I designed and then I did a stupid thing. I was working with part setup and made a new header. I didn't like the header so I went to delete but hit the body part instead. I didn't make a backup of the database either (i know, I know, shoot me now) anyway I lost 10 hours of work in this database that was almost done. My question can I get the body part back with all the fields I had and the layout I had or am I screwed and have to start over?

I've been using FileMaker Pro 6 on osx 10.1.5 for a few months but recently its been having problems loading up. On opening the app, it loads up and displays the load dialog but after a few seconds just quits with no error messages. The classic version is working fine (although under classic in osx its very very slow). I've tried reinstalling FileMaker but it didn't help. I haven't come across this before in previous versions of FileMaker or in any other osx applications. Has anyone got any ideas? Its annoying as there are no apparent errors to go on. Dear All, We have been installing FileMaker 5.5 on some new PCs (running Windows 98 SE) and have encountered the following error on one single PC when trying to install Error 1723. There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A DLL required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor. We have setup each PC identically and this PC is the only one affected. We have a database with a Container field in which we would like to hold Word documents. The system specifications are: Window XP Pro FM 5.0 Office 2000 The problem is that when the Container field is double-clicked, while containing a Word document, an error is returned: "Filemaker Pro cannot complete the operation because of an OLE (0x80004002) error" After clicking on the OK button the message "Sorry there is not enough memory to complete this operation." Other documents, such as pdfs, work fine. Any help appreciated. Thank you. Garry

Since nobody seems to be using FMS with OS X 10.2, I thought I'd ask if here: Is anybody using FMP or FMD with OS X 10.2? Any problems? issues? I want to upgrade to 10.2 really bad... but I can't move if it will break FMP/FMS. I've heard vague references to issues with 10.2 in other threads, but nothing explicit. FMP 6 running under Mac OS X 10.2 wants too much attention. If a script is running and it is printing and the print command is set to bypass the print dialog, FMP insists that it be the foremost application and will stop all activity until it is! This is a problem if you are looping through 400 records and each needs to be printed separately. This basically locks out the user from using her computer until this script has been completely processed. As far as I can tell, FMP pretty much ignores its environment and wants to act like it is the only application running at some times. I am trying to make use of the phone dialer function in fm pro 4, and although in the sample databases it works i cannot seem to do it myself??? The first problem is that i cannot get a graphic of a telephone that will run the script when clicked on. I currently have a modem to connect through but i would like to free up my slot so id there any way to utilise my network connect to my server??? Also if i want to have both my phone lines available to be used how would i got about this?:? Dear All, After I install FM 6 locally, then I load the file , there is an error message " The file WS2_32.dll is not found " . How can I solve this problem . I did tried to file the file above but it is not found. I have this problems on few machines only. Hello all, I have FMPro 5.5, and I want to make some of my files available to two friends. I want to buy older versions of FMPro for them (less expensive) so that they can use my files. Question is, are my 5.5 files compatible with version 3 and 4? I can buy the older versions (especially 3) cheaply on Ebay. My friends don't need to change anything, or develop anything, but just be able to run my files. Any suggestions? Have struggled with this problem for a long time. Is it possible in FileMaker Pro to check every word in a text field in one database against single-word entries in another database and identify matches? All words in the original text field that matched would ideally be highlighted or bolded to indicate match. Additonally, I would like to link from each highlighted word to corresponding fields in another database. Is there a plug-in that might get me anywhere close to this kind of functionality? Thanks. I went from a P2-450, 128MB of RAM, Windows2000 Advanced Server to a P3-933, 384MB of RAM, Windows2000 Advanced Server. I did a fresh install with 10.2 and it seems FileMaker 5.5v2 doesn't open a file when you double click it in the finder when FM isn't already running. Does this every time and sometimes when it isn't launching FM. Anyway else witnessed this?

The more I hang around here, the more I realize how little I know about database design. I was searching the forums trying to find a way to get a pdf to look & print decent as the background on a layout (so I could just plop down fields in the appropriate places). Hi, I've never seen this before. I have a database, lets call it MainDB, that's related to 4 others. To create a record in one of the 4 child files you click a button, a script runs to determine if you've already created a child related to the current MainDB record. If you have it tells you to try one of the other three children. If you haven't created a related record you're taken to the file where you can create a new record. Ok so far, and this has always worked in the past. Until today. I've just been trying to import some scripts from one Filemaker database into another one. I can't seem to import anything without having Filemaker crash. Initially, I tried selecting all the scripts I wanted to import (about 15), so next time I tried one at a time. Still crashed. The files don't seem to be corrupt, and the same thing happens with other good copies. I cranked up Filemaker's memory allocation to no avail. Has anyone else had this happen? Powerbook G4, 384 MB RAM FM version 5.5v2 (I just checked that this is the latest) OS 9.2.2

I have been using FM 5 unlimted for almost 1 year now with Lasso 5 and we decided to upgrade to FM 6. Now I get Add Error codes. Lasso finds the database but it will not work. Did anything change from 5 to 6 unlimted? Do I need remote on? I only have web companion on.

We just upgraded our Mas OS from OS X.1 to OS X.2. Before the upgrade, the Filemakerpro (6.0) client installed on this server would automatically "see" the files hosted on the server. After the upgrade, the only way to "see" the files is to specify an IP address. Is this a bug with OS X.2, or is there something we need to do to get this to work properly?
