I am trying to create beginning balance records in one file from another file to show on a report, but I don't want the data to show in the body. I don't mind if it looks like a blank line but I don't want my users to get confused so I'd like it to be invisible. I need to have the record in my found set, however, as the totals depend upon the record. Trying to make tickets for an event at school. The tickets would have a graphic in the background and a sequential ordering of numbers as the ticket number. That's it. I would like to be able to print about nine per page (letter sized). I simply cannot make it work. Here is (some) of what I have tried. Have (now) four different layouts on which I have tried this. I am a beginner at learning how do this. What I need to do is create something that calculates, counts, summarizes (what ever you want to call it) the number of stores that each of our managers is in charge of. I need to be able to do a FIND by store STATUS (Active, Open, Hold) together with the PHASE (Pre-production, production, permit, construction). In the end I need to find the number of stores that Jim has that are active and in pre-production. I'm sure there is a really simple way to do this I just don't know where to start.

I've created a new layout. I copied and pasted some items from a provided template. If I close the database and reopen it, I get this error: "This action cannot be performed because the required table is missing" Everything seems to work fine - inserting records, serching, printing... It's like it is trying to run a script when it opens. Is there any way to "show all scripts used"? Or something like that? Any ideas on how I can troubleshoot this error? : / Thanks in advance

I have a 'quotation' layout with repeating fields (10 repetitions) with fairly large depths for the field so that if each field was completed in full it would span two pages. Problem 1: I can get the repeating fields to slide and the calculated field beneath them slides up too. However, no matter what I do, I cannot get the field title to slide (indeed in print preview I can't even see it although I have checked that the checkbox not to print is empty) I also wanted to print something underneath the calculated field but I seem to have the same problem. I have a report on which I want all fields to have the same font characteristics (especially size.) However, some of the data fields are using a different (larger) font so that the report (actually labels) does not print correctly. When I look at the individual fields they do seem to be correct yet when I preview the data the larger fonts are still there on individual records. How can I fix this?

I have a few radio buttons where the choices are "yes or no" and those are in as number fields but display yes/no. How can I add a summary to total up the number of "yes" fields that I have for a particular person. I can total up fields with numbers fine, but I can't figure out how to total up the # of fields with the word "yes" in them. Thanks!

Hey everybody, I have two questions for the masters of filemaker... 1) Is there a way to insert a jpg, gif, etc. into a layout so that the picture itself shows instead of an icon that would open the picture in another file? 2) Right now i have a lot of powerpoint presentations stored in container fields throughout my db, which is making it grow a bit too large (up to 169 megs and going skyward). I have always wondered if this is a possibility in FileMaker, and as I have started to develop DB's for people other than myself it is becoming an issue that I must know the answer to, and if there is not an answer what some people use as work around solutions. After I develop an Invoice or PO type Form there are many instances when a user will need to use more "lines" than are available on one printable page of a layout. I have always had to create a second record and then continue on. Two of the two obvious downsides is you would not get a grand total on the second page and sequential numbering would be off because I really want the second page to have the …

I have the following layout which I want to print: SUBHEADING (from repeating field line 1) COMMENT FIELD 1 SUBHEADING (from repeating field line 2) COMMENT FIELD 2 SUBHEADING (from repeating field line 3) COMMENT FIELD 3 Sometimes a subheading and its corresponding comment field is empty. I therefore want to slide the fields below it up to eliminate the space, but this doesn't seem to move them up as I want. OK, here is a question, about page numbering. I have a layout for printing customer bills. Greetings, oh wise ones! I have searched and searched, but have yet to find much information on whether it is possible to hide an empty field on a layout, but show the rest of the record. Specifically, I have a layout for required tools and supplies. Its table contains fields for item name, whether or not the item requires an MSDS sheet (Yes/No) and a container field which will hold the link to the MSDS PDF file (if one is required). I recently switched from Filemaker 4.0 to 7.0 Developer and from OS 9.2 to 10.3.9. I converted several data bases. I have a three page spread sheet layout in landscape in my Accounting file. Previously I used a Image Writer which doesn't have drivers in 10.3.9. I have a HP 4000TN Laser Jet on the Ethernet Lan and a Epson C86 Ink Jet at my desk on USB. The app I'm building will be a kiosk mode interface to a database that will run on computers with a variety of screen sizes. I really want to assume at least 1024x768, but I know that some users will only have 800x600 - and others would love to take full advantage of their 1280x1024. Right now I have a layout with a ton of fields--which means you have to scroll down down down to look at all the information. I want to create a layout that will have different pages or tabs for each record so that it opens with a section general information and then can click over to more specific info like contacts or background, rather than scroll down forever. I've got a layout with three different portals. There are three different tables that contain customer information, the main layout contains the customer's name and contact info. I've related everything together with unique ID numbers, and my layout with the portals works fine. The problem is when I go to print. The portals don't print well, especially when they break across page boundaries. I can set up a layout with sub-summaries that will display the records from any of the three related tables, but can't seem to figure out how to get all three on the same report sorted first by customer, and then by table.

Hi everyone, I'm working with multiple windows more in vs. 7 than in prior versions ... much more. I've only been opening new windows over the top of each other, using straight layout switches or closing the prior window as I move a User through their process - never minimizing. But I still occasionally get a User trapped with the error "Can't modify because it's being modified in another window" in a few places where I've forgotten to add a Commit Record/Request. Oh dear. I was just writing a script that I intended to use to drop the user into a new window and step the window into Layout mode, from Browse, and can't find any way to do that. Strange that there are script steps to enter all of the other modes (and views) except this one. Thinking that I could just do this as an applescript step, I opened FM's dictionary and darned if there isn't a way to do it there either. Yes, it's easy enough to get there by command key, I just wanted to make the user explicitly aware that they were in layout (it's to fine tune a print layout). Anyone have an answer for this? I have a subsummary report. Because some parts that are summarized don't have many line items, it would not look nice to have a page break for each part. Some of the parts have quite a few line items, and continue on to the next page. Problem is, the column headers that are in the subsummary part don't print again at the top of the next page. Is there some way I can get the subsummary part to print again at the top of the next page (in an ideal world, with a "Part (continued)" note).. I've been trying to make a traker for the finance company i work for. The database holds information on customers who have applied for a loan with us, each application will have a status of Pending, Not Paid, Paid, Declined or Cancelled. I am trying to make it such that each record is colour coded to the state the application is in. I have had some success in making colours appear depending on the state by creatin 5 fields each named as one of the 5 possible states and containing that state. then creating 5 relationship each from the status field to one of the state fields. I have a database with many layouts. For example, I want to fill the color of blue to the header and footer of all layouts but don't need to do that for each layout individually. hello. I have a text field in a table, which has information the user can type into. It's about 4 lines high in the data entry form. However, you can put a lot of text in there... obviously if you print that form, you only can see the first 4 lines of text. is there a way to create a report, which will expand the field - or grow the height to show all the text in that field? Hello, I was wondering if there is a way to stop scrolling with the mouse wheel in windows. I have a Project->Tasks relation (1-M). I have the project data at the top and a portal at the bottom, which shows the descriptions of the tasks. I then click on a Task in the portal and (using go to related record) it takes me to a tasksDetail_Layout, which shows all the good details. The problem is, if i have a mouse wheel, while in that view, i can scroll the wheel and it will take me to other tasks. I have a table (not created by me) that has one field (referrals) that has from 1 to 4 inputs. IE - from 1 to 4 persons names. There are other fields with the same problem: address, city, state, zip. I am trying to make and print labels from this field, but so far all I have been able to get is one label, the first name in the field. I have searched and so far have not found an answer. I could redefine each field (refname1,refname2,etc,etc) but then would have to make 4 label layouts for each one. Is there a way I can print each name in the field on a label without going through hoops?

holas i created a photo data base, which contains a media container (for the images thumbnails) and some text fields (for the metadata). i've already organized the records in a form- and list-layout, but i'd like to view the thumbnails in a layout similar to a photo-gallery on the web (rows AND columns). i tried to rebuild FM's solution (photo catalogue), but didn't get through. does anybody know how to do the gallery-layout or knows how FM's solution work? thank you, mil gracias.. patolujolimone

I have modified the Purchase Order Template that comes with FM 7. I will use the modified form to fax or email to our suppliers. I am able to get 25 repetitions on the first page of the form. How can I make a second page print if I need to order more than 25 items and still keep the same PO number? The entire form is contained within the form body. There is no Header or Footer. Hi there Wondering if anyone can help me get back on track with this - I have hit a bit of a block! I am trying to to view a related record in a new window, but I can't seem to get it to work. Concept of what I am trying to do: I have a file that have two tables, 'Customer' and 'Address'. I have a layout in form view that is based on the customer table. There is a portal on this layout that is related to the address table. I want to be able to click on one of those addresses listed and for that address to open up in a new window filled with the address I clicked. What am I doing wrong? I have a layout that contains a header and body area. If I try to increase the size (vertical) of the header, then if I try to restore it back to the original size by sliding the line that delimits the area (not sure of the correct name) back to where it was originally, it refuses to do so and leaves white space around the graphics ... this layout uses coloured rectangles behind the fields. The only way (that I could find) to recover from this was not to save the layout. I had this happen on another layout. I made the mistake of saving it and was not able to restore it to its original condition. (Perhaps I could have by copying it from a backup…

Friends, can you help me obtain a running count of records under a subsummary? I've tried summary fields, the GetSummary function, &etc but no luck. Hello I'm new to version 7 although I've been using Filemaker for over 10 years. There seem to be some fundamental differences and I wondered if people had advice on the best way to do something. It seems I'm not the only one out there with this idea but several people have said that copying tables isn't the best way to go about things. I'm using a solution from Queue that allows you to count how many times an option is selected in a repeating field. When I use the New Window script item to create a pop-up type window that is smaller than the full screen window, Filemaker automatucally takes the old window and changes its dimensions to match the new window. Is there anything I can do to prevent that behavior? Thanks.

I have created a new layout. One of the fields is telephone numbers. When I go to format and click on the fields The name field and phone number field will change colors, text whatever I want, except for the size of the text. When I specify a size on the phone number field (set up a a text field) some of the records will change and some will stay the same. The ones that won't change - if I change them in browse mode to what I want it changes the font size on those particular records back in the original layout as well. What makes the records respond different and what do I do to make layouts with the font size I want?

Hello, I've seen this problem in both 6 & 7, and I don't know if it's a bug or a feature LOL Anyway, suppose that, instead of specifying a background fill color for a particular layout part, you insert a graphic that isn't solid. Now if you add a field on top of this background graphic and specify a background fill pattern as transparent, everything looks good, until the screen refreshes (like when moving to the next record). What you see is a white "screen flash", which isn't very attractive. Is there *any* way to work around this, short of removing the background graphic and specifying a background fill color? Hi We use FileMaker 5.5 and 6 I've noticed this problem before and it's really irritating! When designing a layout that I intend to use for print purposes I align all the fields and their labels so they look fine in layout/browse/preview mode. The layout consists of a logo, field labels and merge fields. The field labels and the merge fields are different fonts and different sizes. Then in this case I'm using Adobe acrobat to print to a PDF file. When I print to the PDF the merge fields are not lined up correctly with their field labels. The same happens when I print the layout directly from preview mode, so that eliminates the problem being…

Newbie-ish Question: So I'm getting ready to start cleaning up my application. I've come up with a color scheme/left-hand navigation pane/"main area" coloration etc. What's the best way to make it uniform on all/most of my layouts? I have a DB listing shirt sizes and pants size for 400 records. The sizes are controlled by a value list using radio buttons. I am trying to do a sub summary showing how many of each size I need. When I do a sub summary by shirts and pants I get the following breakdown. Shirts: YS 4 YM 6 but then I get the following breakdown for the pants: Pants: YS 4 YS 3 YM 3 I want the pants to display as YS 7 YM 3. I created a line items report and all was great, until I went back to add a field, now my report is not subsummarizing how I created it with the report wizard. I didn't change any of my page breaks, so why did my report go from calculating my subsummary totals, to not showing any totals and listing all the records one after another? The field I added was in the header and not in the body..not only that, but another report began doing the same thing and I didn't even touch that one, If you change a layout does it affect your other layouts as well??? I have a custom label layout, so the layout's size set at a size that will allow me to print 5 labels out onto the label. However, whenever I add a new field to the table that the layout uses, FM7 will automatally add the field to the end of the label, which expands the size of my label and throws off the printing for the label. I realize I can just switch to another layout when I'm editing the table, but I'm curious to see if anyone knows if there's a way to either lock the layout, or have fm7 not automatically add the field to the end of the layout. Ok, I have a DB for a sports league. 2 realted tables-1st table contains team name, captain name, etc and the 2nd contains all the players and their id numbers. They are related by an index field. I have it set up now so you can choose the team name from a drop-down menu and all the info and players are displayed via a portal...but I need to be able to display 2 teams that I choose from the menus and their respective information side by side on the same layout. The latest FM update now pastes styled text (with font, size, etc.) into text fields along with text. Unfortunately, I almost never want to preserve font and text style when I paste stuff into a database. How can I set up a layout to disregard any font or text style and use the field's defaults settings? Alternatively, how can I strip out font and text style or execute the paste command so that font and text style don't get into the database in the first place? Thx, Chuck Henebry

I am stuck on what seems to be an easy layout. I have a table of medical patients and within that are two portals, one for medication allergies (each patient can have many allergies) and below that a portal for their medications. In the medication portal there is an active checkbox and the portal sorts active to top and inactive to the bottom. (again each patient can have many medications). And let's say I have a summary field that gives me a running total for the account. I'm trying to create a report that will prompt the user to enter a date range, but will already have certain criteria checked off that it needs to include in the results. I have records sorted by employee name, and in preview it looks fine, with the name and then all the records sorted below the employee, but when I publish it on the website, the employee name shows up, and the records below are not at all for that specific employee... like its not taking the sort on the web or something. There is no summary fields or anything complex, just one simeple3 sort by name. Any ideas?

In my FMP 7 database, I have a layout/report that uses info from two tables. When I bring up the basic tabular layout for one of the tables, call it table A, I notice that due to some cutting and pasting done in populating the table, the font style varies across the fields and rows. When I view my layout/report in Preview mode, I find that the field font styles I specified in my layout/report design are ignored and the font styles seen in the basic tabular layout are being used instead. How can this font style override be eliminated without resetting the font style of every field in every row in table A? I hope this makes sense Thanks, Steve C.

All, I want to create my own themes. This is not documented in the FMP 7 Help, but the theme files are easy to locate and they are pretty straightforward XML. So I could change themes or create new ones if I like... trying this and that to get things the way I want them, spending a *lot* of time doing so. So... does anyone have, or know about, a documentation of possible settings? FM does not provide that information, it seems- I scanned the Techinfo without result. Thanks for any help! I have a simple database that is designed so that users can log company supplies they have used on a week by week basis. Each week the employee will create a new record and log there supplies. I have another layout in this database designed so that I can print all of this information for that employee/week. The problem I have is that when I go to the printing layout It shows me all the records. I only want to view/print the record I was looking at on the other (browse) layout. Is there a way to say "find current record" via a script? Any thoughts are appreciated.

hey guys i have a layout that has a blue background. on top of the background is a large white rectangle. on top of that are multipl eother colored rectangles. on top of them i have transparant text fields. anytime you click on any one of the fields that are transparant you can see through all of them all the way through to the background. is there anyway to get around this? is this a bug or am i just doing something wrong? thanks, Anthony

I tried searching for this topic, but couldn't find any posts... I want to be able to create advanced button designs for my FM solution. I'm using FM Developer 5.5. on Windows XP, so that rules out the button tool that I found on Apple's website. Does anyone know of a button generating tool that allows you to create buttons for use in FM on the windows platform? I found out how to make cool "Aqua" buttons using Photoshop, but am unsure of how I can implement these in my FM layouts. Hi. I'm new to FileMaker Pro so please bear with me. I have a Person table and a related Donations table. I am using the Layout Wizard to make a report with groups (based on the FullName calculated field in Person) that includes the donations from each person and subtotaled per person. When I click the Specify button to choose the Amount field for subtotals, all the fields in the list are greyed out for all tables and I can't specify anything for subtotaling. The layout header is light gray with some black text. The rest of the layout is a subsummary line. A footer contains the text "hi there". Viewed in Preview mode there are 23 pages, completely and utterly white. Everything is set to be printable. I've searched Filemaker Help and can't seem to find anywhere to set "hyphenation" on. I'm trying to modify some layouts ... but one is proving difficult because I cannot access the status area. In addition it has a body part. I have been unable to identify why it has a body part (I think it has to do with reports), but other layouts don't and I can't see how to remove it and how to get my status area back. Hello all, I have an invoice and am having trouble with my sub-summaries not displaying the data correctly. The following is what I need my invoice to generate: 1. Show all the suppliers that were used on one invoice for one customer by month. 2. Show a total of all line items for that month by invoice number and customer name.
