I have been given a database of several thousand records. The records consist of only one field which holds a UK town name. There are a considerable number of names, probably also serveral thousand, which are shown by a brief check of the database. These duplicates have been produced by error or because there are towns with the same name anyway. I need to identify and delete any duplicates which exist. Have tried Find with ! in the search field but this identifies all duplicates including, as it were the 'original' entry. What I need to do is to leave one record of any particular name but identify and delete any other records which have the same name. …

Please refer to the sample file at http://www.duke.edu/~jiehuang/Distinct_test.fp7 In a patient_visit table, I had two counts, one to count the total number of visits, the other to count the total number of patients. For the two reports, you will find that one counts correctly while the other doesn't. I have been using this counting for many of my real databases. And the same problem, some counts correctly while others don't. Please Help!! Jie

Hi you all.... First my question, then the story behind it: How can i find modified records based upon timestamp? Find: > 6/15/2005 1:33:57 PM does not work. This is what i did (all to bypass the purchase of FM Server Advanced for a ODBC connection): I have a "mother" DB. I extract data from that into a "child" and distribute the child to 3 workstations(Macs) where they become a local ODBC source. This child source reveived a import timestamp. After that the child-odbc sources get update through ODBC from within Indesign. Next step is to bring the data back from the child to the mother. Therefore i need to indentify which records got modified: all after the…

Hello folks, I'm happy to have now largely set up my new (first) database in FM. Now that the data is in there I am trying to set up some reports. Often we need to return only results in the past month, quarter or other calculated date ranges. How do I set up a search like that without manually choosing the dates? For that matter, does anyone have an elegant solution to choose from a list of generic date blocks (ageing?)when loading a report? Thanks, Evan

Ok, our research lab had a database with a total of 217 records. Normally we can scroll through them all in sequence, and the ID# match up to the Record#. All is fine for 193 records. After record 193, the ID# jumps to 210 with the record # being 194. Now there are in fact records with ID# 194-209 - they just aren't showing up when we scroll through our database. We can however search for them specifically by typing in the ID#. What is even more unusual is that if I close the form and reopen it (not closing/opening the database, just the form) it will sometime "find" the missing records, and all is in order again. All 217 files are in order and accounted for. I …

HELP! Solving a problem for a co-worker. Been using FM for 5 years, but am apparently still a newbie 'cause I don't have a clue! (Never written a script, but I at least know what one is.) Joining the forum has taught me how small a percentage of FM I know and use. I have a single table with lots of data on dorm residents. Each resident has one record. Request: One of the layouts is a letter to the students on which I need to have FM display the resident's list of roommates with contact info. Progress: I created a calculation (text) field called Roommate Info which lists the pertinent info (name, phone, etc.) from other fields in the table. Next: Now I need…

Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but I'm trying to figure out how to make Filemaker alert the user when they attempt to create a record that already exists. It's a db for a casting agency and they'll need to enter 10,000+ names, detailed info and scans of headshots and resumes, I'd love to be able to warn them that they are about to waist the next 10 minutes of their life before getting too deep into that next new record. I'm a newbie, but I have enough sense to attribute unique serial ID numbers to every new record, so I guess the best way to warn the user is for FM to sense when a duplicate FullName (a calculated field, NameFirst & MiddleInitial & Nam…

Dear All, in my database I have different clients with different revenues. I want to create a statistic layout that shows me how much revenue each client makes. So I perform a find (runs through a script which is triggered when I click on the Statistic button) for all client A records and in a summary field on my statistic layout appears the exact revenue for client A. How can I now manage to perform the next find for client B without having the revenue from client A disappear?? Thanks in advance, Andy

Please feel free to tell me if I'm crazy to think that this can actually be done! My office uses a fax broadcasting system to distribute posters of missing children for law enforcement. At the end of every Fax Broadcast, we receive a report via email with all of the fax numbers that were either disconnected or a voice answer was detected. These fax numbers along with the entire corresponding record need to be deleted from the distribution database so that they are not attemped again. The problem is that these lists can get very large sometimes in the hundreds. I was wondering if there was a way to search throughout the database using the items on the list. I guess it…

Greetings, I have an ENORMOUS database (16 million records, only two related tables). "AcctNbr" ties the two together. The problem is that there are records for the same accountnumbers in the Accounts table, one was created for every year the account was open, "AcctNbr"=1, "BillYr"=1998, "AcctNbr"=1, "BillYr"=1999, "AcctNbr"=1, "BillYr"=2000, "AcctNbr"=1, "BillYr"=2001 What I need to do is this: 1) Show records with duplicate "AcctNbr" and then show only the "top 1" ("top 1" refers to the 'most recent year'. In the above example it would only show me the record for "AcctNbr"=1, "BillYr"=2001--everything else should be hidden/deleted. 2) [i can handle thi…

I am havong a bit of difficulty in figureing out how to make FM5 sort a field with long entries. below are tow of the vaues that are in the field. World War, 1939-1945--Campaigns--France World War, 1939-1945--Campaigns--Africa, North when I sort on these (in a sub-summary) the are both put into a group as "World War, 1939-1945--Campaigns" and the last part is dropped. This is really confusing me as some other entries sort just fine with longer text values than these. Any Help would be greatly appreciated. Roman

Sorry if this is a repeat topic. I looked around and couldn't see it anywhere else. Here's my question: Quite often, I hear other developers saying how they've set up various relationships because they really wanted to "avoid performing a find". Why is that? Unless a relationship is already set up for structure purposes, it is so much easier to set up a find in a script, rather than add to an already overpopulated relationship graph. Is there something performance-related, or is it an attempt to create queries like you might find in other databases?

I have a bunch of records that I want to trim down by seeing if they are all using current products. Basically, in the record is a text/numerical field which indicates which product the customer (record) is using, in this form: XXX-####-XX, and I want to have each record matched to a list of current products, and if the product is current, I want to keep it, and if the product is not in the current list, I want to omit it. I'd like to offer my users a search page, lookin kinda like this: I want the search to look in all fields in a large block of tables that are in one relationship tree. "Any of" is AND'ed with "All of" in the search, so if the user ran this search: The script should find records with that name and either phrase, regardless of what fields are involved. Assuming I can find an easy way to parse the quotes (no escape characters need be allowed, so there's no worry about quoted text in phrases), I could do this by running a search on each field of each table per every permutation of the "All of" phrases, but that's killer-slow. I need suggestions: I'm not r…

I'm building a solution that uses a somewhat fancy (for me) set of calculated container fields as a button-placing / altering system for basic navigation. I.e., at the top of each layout I have an identical set of calculated container fields that conditionally display button icons according to what layout is being viewed and by whom. The actual button definitions are of course attached "over" the container fields. Everything works like a charm, EXCEPT -- When I want a user to be able to go into Find mode, all of the calculated container fields (i.e. the entire set of navigation buttons) disappears, because FMP thinks the container fields are subject to being sea…

Hi, I have a portal in a form on my Customers table linked to an Order Items table, which shows all the products each customer has ordered. Each Order Item record contains the product name, units, sale price, currency. It's fine searching for customers who have bought a specific product, but I wish to search for customers who have ordered (both of) 2 specific products. Is there an operator I can use in the search term to do this? or is there a way of including repetitions of non-repeating fields within a portal in find mode? or another solution? Thanks in advance for any help

Hi, I have a simple task for a script but cannot get it to work.. The script should loop through the found set of a table, perform a find on another table depending on the current record in the first found set. Basically the script logic is (after initial find) loop set global field to current value of a field in the found set perform a find on another table using that global field as criteria should the found set go to the next record in the first found set end loop Should this be as easy as I think? Thanks in advance.

Hey, It seems my get (FoundCount) isn't acting like it should. I find some of the records in my DB. I've been unable to find a suitable workaround to the following issue, and was hoping someone here might be able to help: I need to be able to perform finds in my Invoice file for fields such as "Amount Paid" and "Balance Due." The problem I'm encountering is that these fields are based on related records which I access through a portal. Each related record contains order and payment data for one line item on my Invoice. FileMaker 7 does not seem to support Find requests that require accessing information from related records. The only solution I've seen for this issue is to create a separate set of fields that can contain copied data from the original fields. …

Hello, I have been having problems with the find feature on the database. I hope my problem is simple (as well as a solution) To duplicate a set of Line Items, I have a summary field where the "Job ID# to be matched" is in (pasted in one record, then shows up in all). From that, a calculation field, "Correct Job", determines if that value in the "Job ID# to be matched" field is the same as the "Item Job ID#" for that record, if so, returns 1, otherwise returns 0. So, when I perform a find for "Correct job" field = 1, it returns the right records... sometimes. It seems, usually, when I first start up Filemaker it performs the find correctly once, then,…

If I have removed access to the Status Area (left side control panel) within a database, is there an easy way of giving users access to the Omit checkbox when performing finds? I was woundering if a simple perform find or a matching related record would be the faster way to "search" a table with 100,000 records or more. Is it a question of number of search criterias? Does it depend on the number of records? The search criterias would be exact matches or ranges, which is easily implemented into FM7 relations. /Johan

When I change the Default Language for sorting and indexing to 'Unicode', it's still wrong. with language 'unicode', it excludes the value …

I need to create a script that makes the current record the only record that appears in the found set. I need this in order to be able to export a single record at a time, which will then be imported into another application. Seems like creating a test field that looks up the current index #, then conducting a search on that field would work, but I can't seem to quite make it happen. By the way, it must be a script since it will be executed in a runtime environment by other users. Please help. Thanks.

i have 2 questions: i am in the process of creating a databse of archival material in a museum. one of my fields is "category," which has a number of possible entries (e.g., tourism, current events, antiquities, etc.) 1) when a do a find search in category i would like to save the found set as a separate layout in the main file, or something similar, so that i don't have to keep doing the find command. is this possible? i also have a "period" field which i've set up as a date field. a lot of the material is from newpapers, so i have a full date (e.g., june 7, 1977), but for others the date is unknown, or i only have the month and year. 2) is there a …

Hi, I've come across this problem a few times and hope someone might have been down this track before me! This is what I'm trying to do; I have 3 layouts - "Person", "Car" and "Events". One "Car" record can have many "Events" reocrds. When I look at one "Events record" I would like to have a script that finds ALL "Events records" for the related "Car record". These "Events" records would have the same 1st field/value (ID) but other fields would have unique values. So I've made a script that does this (keep in mind that I'm a newbie at FM7 :-) Go To Layout [Events] Go To Field[select/Perform, Events::ID] PerformFind[] SortRecords[] But how do I sp…

I have a Music database that contains tables: CDs, Tracks, MP3s Tracks are related to CDs - MP3's are related to nothing. I need a way to Perform a Find for a Title or Artist accross both the MP3s and Tracks tables and then display the found count for both. I tried the global relational method, but it doesn't work like a Find - that method requires the text to be an exact match, sometimes the only thing know is a word a two (Finds show records where only a portion of the field matches). I thought about combining Tracks and MP3s but the only there would be alot of null values for unrelated records to CDs. Any ideas??

Hi, When I discovered the powerfully enlarged FM7-search-functionality, I was very happy to now be able to do a search in one table but also use criteria from related tables at the same time. Yet I discovered a major problem: I use an extra search-layout with variable-fields. When the user clicks on "Search", a script switches the table to search to search mode and copies all the values from the table with the variables. That works fine, but when the user enters "*" in a field that is part of a related table, but not the table that displays the results, it takes VERY long time (about 30 seconds) - although the query is in fact really simple and takes 1…

Hello all, I'm creating a database that keeps count of the amount of profit/loss a client has made by following our stock market advice since the date he/she joined. I have 2 databases, "Subscribers" and "Selection_Results". The "Subscriber" db contains the clients name, address, join date etc. The "Selection_Results" db contains all info about the stock selection, date the selection was given, profit made, etc. I have made a relationship between the 2 db's with called "profit_to_date", with the match file "subscriber::date_joined" with "Selection_Result::Selection_Date". My problem is... Instead of just matching the "date_joined" with t…

I'm trying to create a script which allows the user to perform a find... and based on the number of records found I would like to change the layout. If the found set is 1 ... I display the detail layout and if the found set is greater than 1 ... I display a list so they can select which detail record they want to look at. But it seems the "Get(FoundCount)" is not available until the script that is running has completed. Thanks for your help Glenn

I am working on developing a geneology type solution that would recognize a request made to one person, and would log the request in each of that person's ancestor's files. i.e. I would run a script that would register a request for that person's name, and add a counter to him as well as adding a counter (a different counter) to each of their direct line ancestors. I would want to track how many requests had been made for each person during each month, and create a report listing the results. Currently I have the name, name ID, the ancestor name (which is keyed to name) that I think are related to this solution. I have 10 instances of the table in my relationship…

Hi all FM Developers I'm trying to find al related records to a person but can't make it work. THis is the setup; I have Persons-records, each Person-record can have 1 or more Car-Records. I am not sure if i can do this or not I have attached a file with what I am trying to do which is to perform finds as an OR statement on certain fields. The table contains part of airfare rules at a farelevel (all other rules, seasons routings etc are drawn from other related tables ) Within this table i wiant to perform finds on a number of fields at the same time . I use globals to set search values and then switch to find mode insert the globals and perform find.... that part works. But it is commont that in some fields users want to be able to use the equivalent of OR statments. For example they may need to update all fares from ATL or IAH that go…

is there an easy way to create a found set with just the current record you are veiwing? I have this db that uses form letters. the user scrolls through records, finds one they like, and click print form letter. The problem is that the report, when viewed in Preview Mode, shows every record. In my case hundreds. Worse then that, it shows the 1st record in the sort list, which isnt the record I was viewing to start with. This makes a printing 1 to 1 no work either. So I would like to initiate the script and create a found set with the current record. Then I can go to Preview mode with no worries. Am I missing something obvious? I keep thinking of this crazy …

Is there a way to change the values within a found set via a dialog box type entry? I would like to be able to perform a find, then change specific field values within just those found records without affecting the values in any other (omitted) records. I would like to be able to do this in a way that the new value can be generated on the fly by the user (via a custom dialog box). In some cases, the fields that would be affected (found) would be empty. In some cases the new data (from dialog box) would be replacing existing data. Is there a way to do this? Thanks, Jarvis

I have a database that we use to track ip addresses for computer systems we sell. I would like users of the database to be able to select the serial number of any system in the database from a pop-up list. This pop-up list would be a global input field that pulls the serial numbers from a serial number field in the database. Once a serial number is selected in the input field, the user would click a find button and the selected serial number and related related records would be found and displayed in another layout. If a serial number was enterd into the pop-up list field that wasnt in the database, the user would be asked if he/she would like to create that record.…

When I find a set of records, I receive a list, each of which has an order total(also the field name) in it. I want to sum the order totals for the entire found set. I have created a field called Grand Total, made it a calculated field, and used the formula "Unstored=Sum ( Order Total )". Well guess what... this doesn't work. This should be simple, but I don't have a clue. What am I doing wrong? Thanks, Phil

When I do a Find in an Unstored Calculated(text) field it says there are no records found when I know the record is there. The field I am trying to do a find in is called LastNameCalc and is defined as follows: If(IsEmpty(ID#);Last Name;IndivInfo::LastName) The calculation works fine. I can see the Last Name for records that do and those that do not have ID#'s. It is when I do a find that I have a problem. For records that do not have an ID#, the find works fine. When a record does have an ID# it says there are no records found when I know the record is there. Is it because of the relationship in the calculation? Why won't it find it when I can se…

My database has a separate search layout. When people come to this screen, they select a preset date from a drop-down menu, then click a Begin Search button which puts the user in find mode. This button also puts the date selected from the drop-down menu into the Date field. They can enter other criteria before selecting the Continue button. Problem: when users first come to this search layout, the results of previous searches are still displayed. While the Begin Search button will clear the fields once clicked, is there a way of removing any previous found records so as not to confuse users. In effect, I am looking for a "clear found records" script that can be put …

I have a database of clients. If client1 is billed for date1, date2, date 3 then I can bill for 3 days. However if the entries for client1 are date1, date1 date3 then I can only bill for a total of 2 days. I have a summary field that counts the number of dates and places the total per client in a report. Obviously sometimes that field overcounts due to duplicates (2 different transactions occuring on the same day) If I try to first find all duplicates then filemaker sees client1 date 1 as duplicate to client2 date1. In summary I would like to look for duplicate dates within each individual client and ultimately identify them by bolding them or if possible adjus…

I'm looking for a method for putting up a search layout, allowing the user to enter the search criteria, hit <return> to run the search, and then be able to re-display the search layout with the most recent search criteria, if the search needs to be refined. I can do this by using Browse Mode and using Globals on the search layout, but I don't like the fact that, in Browse Mode, the user can't hit <return> to make the script resume. I'd rather use Find Mode, for that reason alone. This eliminates the possibility of using Globals on the search layout. Here's what I'm doing currently: Set global fields to initial (null) values Loop -- Go…

Help!!! I have some folks back east using a solution I developed, but for some reason they get different answers than I do when running certain scripts. Specifically, the database includes data that has section numbers (Section 1, Section 1.1, Section 2.3.5, etc.). I have a script that will constrain the found set to just one section. The script parameter is set to the appropriate section number depending on the button that called it. Assuming I'm looking for section 4, the script does the following: goes to find mode pastes "4." into the section number field (this finds 4.1, 4.2, etc.) makes a new find request pastes "=4" into the section number field (this …

To simplify enttry of dates into a Date field on a search screen, I am toying with the idea of buttons on a layout which have "Today","Yesterday", "Last 7 Days", Last 14 days", etc which, when clicked, go to another layout (a search layout) and set the date in the Date field. I am using the SetField Command, so to show dates from the last 7 days I have: SetField[File:Date;">"&Get(CurrentDate)-7] Problem: Can the SetField command be made to show a date range e.g. 1.1.2005...3.1.2005? I have searched on the forums but cannot find an answer... I am having trouble with finding records that are in a previous found set. I have already set up one way of marking other records in a different found set. The way that I have set up this other refind is: The ID of records found in an initial find are stored, line by line, in a global field. To refind these records a script loops through the global field, parsing out each ID and setting it into the ID search field in the new requests.. The script sort of works, except for the last line of the global -- which means that sometimes the refound set misses the last record. An example file is …

hi there, I have written a task scheduler here for our real estate business, we have 40 agents and 20 admin staff and the boss wanted a task sceduler so if a property is sold it triggers a lot of tasks to be send to the appropriate agent and admin. I have all the tasks in one 'tasks' database and whoever is logged in at that time i just do a find when they want to view their tasks and only the agents related tasks show up in the list.
