  2. I have posted this before, but can't find if this issue has been resolved... I am using FM server on Win2K. I have a single database which is access by approx 5 users - all of which are NT4 users. In general, all is fine... howevewr, approx once per month, a user will attempt to perform a task (which we have not identified as a single task) and a date field will change so that every record will have this same date.. This is a db file in which usually only one of the five users will acess this date field. This field is either filled manually or by selecting via a button on a calendar. This user has mentioned that the screen will redraw and record by record (in list …

  3. What are the limitations on # of records / file size with FM5 Server? We are currently running 2 NT 3.0 Servers and have files that are getting close to the 250MB limit of FM4. We are considering upgrading 80 seats and the servers soon, but need much more storage capacity for some future projects.

  4. After reading through lots of documentation I am hoping someone here can help... I am trying to successfully make a large upgrade jump from FM 3 to FM 6 in an office of about 12 users. We have been sharing databases over our network via FM 3, running in MAC OS 9, until now. As we have moved everything over to OS X, FM is the next thing to bring up to speed. All the new bells & whistles in FM 6 and FMS are making the transition a bit more confusing than I had expected. I have installed FM Server 5.5v2 on an iMac. It's not a workstation and will only be used to serve FM databases. I can start the server running using the FileMaker Server Config applicat…

I am wondering if anyone can point me to a white paper or something similar that lays out all the various aspects of FM that change when a file is being served? I currently know of two: 1. Global fields are no longer truly "global" when a file moves to a server. These fields now become different for each user. 2. Export paths can get confused. I export small text files for use in our DOS network. I have recently learned the hard way that if I set up a new export script directly in a file being served, then the path of that script becomes variable depending on the user. I had to pull a copy off the server, open it locally, rememorize the path, then reinsta…

I must admit up front I have been programming in FM for 8 years but only recently have my customers forced me into the world of Servers! After reading most of the posts in the Server Performance Statistics thread, I am hopelessly confused. I have a customer using FMP Server 5.5 and Citrix with over 300 users. They are networked over fiber optic lines over a county. There are approximately 8,000 records in the database (4 related FM files). I know there are issues with Citrix but I have no control over that. (When the system was first setup and the customer had trouble printing, the tech said, "You didn't tell me you wanted to print!" OAY!!) The lady who is i…

  21. I'm wondering if somebody has ever tried running multiple instances of Filemaker server on one machine, a bit like running several web sites on one machine. I could imagine that this could be possible, given a high bandwidth network connection, fast hard drives and processor and an OS of the *nix flavor. Reason to do this would be to offer affordable Filemaker Server services to third parties, since using a separate machine for every client would be considerably more expensive. Anybody any ideas about this? Regards, Ernst.

So I'm wondering how many users FM can handle, realistically. M.

  27. I am a FMP newbie and am having trouble understanding the FMP server/client relationship. Are the files on FMP server generally open all the time or is it okay to have a script run on the client side which opens the files? If this is the case, once the db is open on the server (because someone is logged into it) if someone else goes to log in, does it "open" the files again or does this user log onto an open file already, since another user is using it? I am probably not making any sense, but if someone understands my ? and can help me I will be eternally gratfeful. Thanks [color:"blue"]

  30. Heather McCue posted a possible solution to the problem of file corruption when using the OS X version of Filemaker Server. Basically it was a timing issue, were closing the database or stopping the service does not immediately release the files, although it might appear that way to the user. Waiting for several minutes before doing anything with the files seemed to solve the problem.

  33. FP server OS9 I am only guessing this is where I should be posting my question. I recently put all db on a server to host through out the company, which is located in another area in the building. When I launch the program, I am a guest. Do I have to do all the changes from the location the files are being hosted from?, or is there another way?

Hey All, I'm not entirely sure if this quesiton belongs in this category of questions, but I get the feeling that it's somewhat related... I have made a database for my company; this database is comprised of about 9 files, all placed in one folder. Many of the 9 files are related to one-another using relationships'n whatnot... e.g. one of the files generates an invoicing-report which pulls-in information from a couple of the other files. Soon, my boss wants me to move the entire database onto a common server so that everyone in the company can have access to the database from different places. My question is, when I transfer this folder (full of all…

I'm new to FileMaker Server, so maybe this is a simple question, maybe not. I've developed a FileMaker program for a non-profit group as a stand alone, one desktop program. Now I've been informed that they wish to run this program off their server. Since only a few people may be using this program at any given time, do they have to purchase FileMaker Server or can FileMaker 6 handle it? I know you can peer-to-peer the software, but that's one area I haven't dealt with. Thanks.

  37. We are performing some maintenance on our Windows NT server, and in the meantime, I installed FileMaker Server 5 on a 350 MHz iMac, running Mac OS 9.2.2. I allocated about 100 MB RAM to FMServer, but it looks like it's only utilizing about 5% of that (maybe FMServer's suggested size). So I'm wondering... Why is network performance about 50 to 75% that of the NT server? Many have politely told me that it's really slow today... And I agree. I actually thought it would be faster. I made sure to check the "Maximize Performance" button, but I'm now eyeing the database cache setting. I looked at the Usage Statistics (see screenshot) and it appears as if I'm maxing…

After reading these boards for a long time, I've finally decided to split FM Server off our main W2K server running SBS. I'm going to purchase a dedicated box to server FM. I'm really doing this to increase performance, so I hope it works. (You've worn me down to where I feel like it makes sense!) 56. Filemaker has recently posted a Tech Info article on its website that effectively trashes OS X as a suitable host for Filemaker server. Tech info article 108428, posted 5 August, says that the only way to safely close files hosted under OS X is to manually access the server from another machine using the admin plug in and close each file by hand, one by one. This is more than just a pain. It means that there is no way to gracefully handle a forced shut down of the server computer when the administrator is not present, for example due to an overnight power cut. Having a temporary battery back-up will not protect the databases from damage because there is no autom…

Hi, Office setup OS :XP FMP6 FMS Home Setup FMP6 A question about programming with FMP6 and then putting the database in a server enviornment. When I program at home without server running I Define relationships, use open script steps etc by using the folder name in open file window. If I then take this database to the office (WIth Filemaker server) do I need to re-define these links using the Host button in the open file window or does server 'magically' take care of this ? Thanking you in advance.

  66. Hi, Is there a way to have a unique calculation field? This calculation field is the result of three other text fields. The combination of these three fields has to be unique in the database. FMP doesn't give me the option of unique when creating the calculation field. Is there a work around for this? Thanks Stanley

  67. I have a client which has 5 local users within a LAN and 7 remote users via VPN, all hitting the FMP 5.5 server. The local users are experiencing the "worm" on some very simple work procedures (sorting on indexed fields...etc) and are complaining about the slow performance. I know that FMPServer processes are single threaded. So what I suspect is that the remote users and their workload are dragging the down local users performance. Meaning, the local users server requests must wait in line behind the remote users server requests. This in effect slows the entire system to a grinding halt. Any light somebody may shed on this subject is greatly appreciated. …

  68. Let me start of with the fact that I am a babe-in-the-woods here. Six years ago I developed two FMP systems for a non-prof that offers free support to cancer victims and their families. One system tracks Participant activities and various statistics (type of cancer, Oncologist's name, etc.). The other tracks donor activity and generates acknowledgement letters. Both were developed in FMP 4.1. I am now being asked to perform a major upgrade in which I will integrate the two systems, and add an accounting module. I know enough about FMP to know that I can make the programs work. BUT, they have a new 7 station office network (all PCs running Windows XP), and they want a…

  69. We installed FM Server 5 a couple of weeks ago and it has been working great. I set the Guest related properties in the FM Console to not disconnect guests idle for any amount of time. I did this because we have a machine running FMP Unlimited that needs to maintain a connection all the time. Last night the server disconnected several guests stating that they had been idle. I checked the properties and they haven't changed from what I set originally. Why would the server do this out of the blue? Does anyone have any idea why it would have done this? Thanks, John

  70. I have a bunch of FM dbs running on 2 FmServers on my network - for some reason I can no longer see these servers when starting up FMPro on a different machine and pressing "hosts" in the open file dialog... DNS is ok, pings are fine, I can traverse accross the network and access the databases on the servers via the F$ admin share ( didn't open just making sure no network funny stuff was going on.) I can dump the IP address in there but since we have everything distributed accross 2 servers it chokes whenever it wants a db living on server # 2 - None of my other LAN connected boxes have this problem except for this one Terminal Server machine I am referring to... …

  72. So my IT guys just came by and switched my server computer (Windows NT Server)from a public IP to a private IP. Now when I try to start FM Server 5.5, I get an error message that says, "The FileMaker Server Service returned server specific error 11." When I check out the Event Viewer, I see an Event ID 91: FileMaker Server quitting! Temporary file could not be created. Anyone know what's up? Thanks! Courtney

  73. Okay. I'm totally lost. I've been using fm for years. I have 6.0 running on all my machines. Now I bought the Server and installed it on its own machine and don't know where to go from here. I have machines running 98 and some 2000 and two on XP. I have a Novell server that we all log into and that's where I store all my FM files. I was told that if I install the Server on its own machine it'll make things faster. I don't know how to see it from my other machines, I don't know how to move files to it, can't get remote admin to work. So far with Novell we see the drive on the server as either F, G or H so I can access files by going to H:... What do I do with this Server m…

  74. I have several databases being hosted on FM Server 5.5. I want to run a Crystal report against a database that is being hosted. I created a FMP ODBC data source. In the configuration of the data source, it allows you to use a remote connection. You then specify either the server name or IP address. I get this all set up and then go into Crystal and try to see the databases using the ODBC data source I just creatd. It gives me an ODBC error. Should I be able to do an ODBC call to a FMP database hosted on a FM Server or do I have to have the database open on a client and access the database locally on the client? It seems like to me that I should be able…

  76. Okay, I tried this on the general forum and am not getting anywhere so I'll take a shot here. I am familiar with FM since v1. I am totally lost with server. I have a number of machines 98, 2000, xp, networked together and I use Novell on a server. That's where most of our files are. So we go to the server - disk F:, G: or H: to get or give files. FM recommended FM server. SO I installed it on a new machine that's running 2000. I followed instructions to allow remote admin. Basically I can't do a thing with it. How do I find the machine from my workstation? Hosts doesn't even show it. How do I copy files from my Netware server (like from disk H:fmfiles} to the new FM Serve…

  84. Had a power outage today and it was long enough that my UPS sent my network into shutdown mode. In theory, it properly shut down FMS. Some of the attached clients weren't on backup power so when power went, so did they. 1-2 users may have been connected at the time. Restarted FMS, files were loading, but very slowly (go to hosts, not all files would be there, go to hosts again, a few more would be there.). Not all the files showed up so i restarted the FM service. That got it going. Users complain of no "find" mode in main 2 files (linked). I check with my master password, same thing. Shut down server, open just as a file, same thing. Double check pass…

Hello Everyone, We seem to continue to receive this error code. I can't seem to find anything on it and was hoping someone here could shed some light on this. The message with the error is " Communication with the host was lost and could not be reastablished. At first I thought it was the server disconnecting an idle user but this is not the case. Any Ideas on how to solve this? Thanks, Michael

  88. Hey all! We've been using FMS 5.5v1 on our MacOS X 10.2 Server for quite a while now. Since we have the 'regular' corruption problems, we figured, some scheduled backups during the day would entlighten our life a lot. So i put up a few schedules for backing up at certain times of the day (ie. 12.30 lunch start) to have FMS make a backup of the databases to a folder on a separate disk. No problem you'd say, but the weird part is, it doesn't backup! :S One schedule has run once, the other 3 have never. All schedules are enabled and the 'Run Schedules' menu item is checked on. Searching this forum, i couldn't find any earlier occurrence of this problem (i…

  89. Not only is OS X Server completely un-stable, reproducing issues to test work arounds is nearly impossible. Server has now taken to crashing sporadically when backing up to a fire wire drive. Well at least it produces a concatenated crash log with stack dump info called: fmservd.crash.log. I guess FMI left debug info on in this release.

The other powerbook client has upgraded to FM 6 and can't access the files at all. We are a small K-8 school (300 students) using a FM Server 5.0.2 for our school database on a Mac network (9.2) If we were to get another server, could we easily run two servers, one for the main school database, and a second as a student server for their projects, to learn about databses, etc. But we would not want the students to even see the main database. Would like this to happen without jumping through too many hoops. Any thoughts? Cheers

I'm totally new with FM. I have a database (with whole bunch of .fp5 files) and it needs to be "loaded" to a dedicated server running FMS 5.5. I would like to know how to put the database files to the server so that the clients, which are running FM Pro 6, can open and share the database. Orginally I created a new folder in W2K server, shared the folder, and just opens the .fp5 file from the share. After reading some comments and document, I don't think using windows share is a good idea. Now, I need to know a proper way to load and share the database from FMS. Can some one give me a hand? TIA

  100. I am running FMP Server (v.5) under Mac OS9. Recently had to relocate it to our company's central data center. I need to have the ability to password protect the entire computer, much like Mac OS X built in screensaver that has the password option. I do not want use a screen saver that is application based as that degredates the performance of FMP server. All I really want to do is dim the screen to black, and enable a password to protect it from unwanted use. Will a control panel based screen saver degredate the server's performance the same way an application based one does? Right now, upgrading FMP server to the OS X version is not an option which I realize would fix m…
