I currently have a multi-platform solution with about 25 db files that are tied into fmserver. Is it possible on both the mac and pc platforms to send a user directly into the server without choosing host and then the FP5 file? Only one of the FP5 is not set to Multi-User hidden, so that is the file the users open and attached to that database is the startup script to take them where they need to go. The question is can the user double click an icon or something to that effect from the desktop or start menu or laucher and go directly into the database with the startup script without choosing host and the FP5 file? Hello Everybody, I have noticed for sometime now that the FileMaker Server 5 closes the FileMaker files on it's own. I have set the option so that I start the FileMaker Server service manually, and so I have to open the files again myself. Does anybody have an idea why that happens, and how I can avoid it? Thank You

On Filemaker Pro 5 (Mac) I could use an Applescript to run a script in Filemaker (along the lines of- tell application "Filemaker Pro" do script "whatever" end tel). I have upgraded to FM Server and would like to do the same sort of thing, using the Task Scheduler to run an Applescript to trigger a FM script, but the "do script" option isn't available in Applescript for FM Server?!?! I really want to get FM Server to update a load of fields every night to speed up report generation and this seemed to be a good way to do it... Can anyone please suggest a way of doing this? Thanks. al.

I've noted that FM Server5 stops and starts all hosted DBs about every hour for about 1 second. The message that this is being done for safe backup purposes, but the DB is only down for about 1 second before it is opened again for 'writes'. Is this normal? Why? Can it be stopped, or scheduled for when backups actually do occur? Thanks!

I am script challenged; that being said, I've been pulling out my hair (what little is left) trying to figure out how to write a script to open the files that my company needs to run in case I'm not here. Instead of writing out a long list of instructions, I wanted to create an icon for someone to double click that would start FM Server 5, then open the files they need to use (they're already password protected). I've been able to create the script thus far that will start FM Server, but getting it to open the files has been stumping me. This is all in Applescript. The problem is that in trying to write the hierarchal order of the file, AS returns and error "Expected …

We am currently using FM4 and I am studying the possibility to upgrade to FM5 or possibly to another db.We are direct mail company and do marketing in hundereds of countries around the world. We are dividing our records by country making one file for each country with 100.000+ records in each file. We would like to know the pros and cons of upgrading to FM5 vs. another db as well as the performance limitatations of FM5.

If you want to change properties on a live server (such as increasing the number of clients) do you have to close the Filemaker Server under the Services window in Windows (NT)? This is FM Support's advice. So why am I asking, you might wonder? The server hosts a very busy database. I'm loathe to take it down to perform an upgrade that doesn't work (as I did recently - following similar advice). I'd be obliged if anyone could confirm this from experience.

I'm running FM Pro 5 on a local network, and I used the Server Administrator to close a file, then I did some routine maintenance on it (added a new relationship and changed the validation rules for a field). When I try to re-open the file to the server, I get an "unable to open file" message. I've tried recovering the file and opening the recovered version, tried copying it and opening the copy. I even tried cloning the file and opening the clone. None of these works. Now that the file is off the server, I can open it in FM Pro, and it appears fine. How can I get the file open again on the server? ------------------ Dr. Stephen H. Savage Arizona State arks 130…

Dear All, I don't really know if this problem is related directly to FM Server 5 or FMP5. My problem is, after I have installed Microsoft Data Access Components(MDAC) 2.5 on my Windows NT Server, I can no longer administer/open the FM server from a remote machine. I can see the Serve's name, but it is dimmed and cannot be opened. That only happened after installing the MDAC. I don't know if installing it has chaged anything. I checked the network configuration, and everything is still the same. I tried reinstalling the FM Server, and the FMP5 on my machine, but nothing has changed. I'm in deep trouble, and I don't know what to do; help me if you can. Thank You

Hi all- This is probably a really simple question, but I'm doing everything without documentation so here goes.... On an NT system running FMP Server - to share/add data to a FMP database for an internet site, does the FMP application and database file need to remain open? If so, is there another way of doing it without staying logged onto the system. The server it's running on is in a area that alot of people pass through, and I don't like the idea of not being able to log out just to keep an application running for an indefinite period. Thanks in advance for any help....

Hi, FM Server 5, running on an NT box with SP 4, a single FM5 file sitting under it. Remote access installed on client, admin password for FMServer & FM5 file is the same... ... So how come I can't modify the access priveleges. The only option I have is " change password" This makes any development very difficult as I have a number of different "groups" with variety of access requirements. Service console 'appears' to be operating fine but this is the only other place I can see where the problem is. No. of concurrent users is less than 10 out max of 22. Can't get around having to work off the main file as a copy and import content as a regular operation. Apa…

I have an FMP Mac server with web-based (Home Page HTML) access for surveys, grades, etc. Lately users have been getting occasional errors when submitting: "user limit exceeded. The maximum number of licensed users are connected." I can restart FileMaker and it is then OK, or it corrects itself with time. Apparently the IP guest limit is set at 10. I assume this is the cause. How is this set and how can it be increased? Any thoughts?

We have a client who is running FM server 5 on Mac OS 9.0. At the beginning of the day (after teh server starts up), the database is access and displays the results quite quickly. As the day progresses, the access and display takes longer and longer to complete. On one firm, it goes from an instantaneous refresh to nearly 3 minutes. FM Server 5 is the only application running. The server has 256 Mb ram, and was originally OS 9.0.4. We have since backed teh system to 9.0. We've even tried upping the cache and increasing the amount of ram allocated to FM Server 5. Still no change in the symptom. All we've been able to do to allieviate this is to shut down FM Server…

I am developing a Filemaker System for a client that has an NT Server which is also the running Filemaker Server 5. All is well except for remote access via an IP #. The person that handles the NT Software has set NT up so that the staff at the clients location uses the null IP numbers 192.168.0.x for the internal access to the NT Server and Filemaker. They do have a DSL line which has a regular IP number. The NT person is trying to provide Internet Security since he has file sharing turned on. My company has used File Maker for years on MAC computers, but they have decided to switch to PC's. When we transferred the database from the MAC's to the PC the layout on the screen was fine, but when we print a sheet the layout becomes misaligned. We have sheets of data that display operation numbers in one column and they must line up with the operation data in another column. Well on the screen the numbers line up with the data, but when we print the sheet the numbers no longer align with the data. It worked perfectly on the MAC version, but when used on a PC we have that problem. What could cause this problem? Please help.

In the Server Administrator's Guide, in the Appendix of Technical Specs and optimization (page A-2) it says: "Turn off file sharing Make sure operating system file sharing is turned off on the server computer." Is this a requirement of Server 5 or a suggestion for optimization? The machine we want to run the as the server is an NT box, serving e-mail and 10 users for basic file sharing and saving. Sorry if this is deemed rude, but that is pure bull crap. Who ever told you this is probably trying to sell you or your company and a bunch of other NT solutions too. ? We run a mixed network here, and have our FMS running on a Mac. None of the PCs have any trouble accessing it. If you are running FMS 5.0 on a Mac, you can select in preferences - networking to run either TCP/IP only or TCP/IP and AppleTalk depending on your needs. Now restart your FMS app, and any PC not your network host be able to see the Mac FMS server as a Host. One caveat, this assumes that you are running some sort of IP addressing on your network. Hope this clears thing up for you.

I am currently running Netware 4.1 on our WAN and will be upgrading to 5.1 this year.

I am having some trouble with Filemaker Server crashing during or around scheduled backup times. Someone thought this might have to do with the Database Cache and Flush settings. Currently the Database Cache is set to 40MB and the cache is set to flush every 15 minutes. We are running Filemaker Server on a G4 with Mac OS 9. It is hosting 41 files with 20-30 guests at an average. One file is huge:623 MB. Five are large: 80-130 MB. The rest are under 12 MB. Anyone have any thoughts on this? We are thinking of switching over to NT.

I have 750 Megs of Ram on a 500 Mhz G3 Server that is reserved for FM Server 5. I run this on a Novel Network managed by another guy. We have on average about 8 people connected to data files at any time. Most are just viewing. Only 4 have modifcation rights. Solution is 20 files. I wonder if I configure the machine to load FM Server and the files into a RAM disc if it will run any faster? Some things take bloody for ever, like subsummary reports etc. I realize I will have a problem maintaining valid data in case of a crash, but that can be solved. Any ideas? Thanks ------------------

hi, this is from the FM technical support: "Storing external graphics. When using the Import Picture command, you can use the checkbox to "store only a reference to the file. When this option is used, only a thumbnail image is stored in the container field, along with a reference to where to locate the image on disk." I have a big problem with referenced files - they cannot be found after having copied the database and the images to another computer - is this how FM wants it to be? does "disk" mean the local disk the database was running when the graphics were imorted with the option "store only a reference to the file"? thanks for helping :confused

Could the FM5 Server software run on the G4 server running Appleshare IP? If not, how could the Apple G4 server enhance our FM environment?

We're running our production databases on one machine using FM Server 5 and we use automatic backup to back up those files each night. Using Visual Basic, we copy the backup files to our web server (separate machine) and want to open them in FM Pro Unlimited 5 to allow access to more than 10 web users. In order to do this we would have to close the day old files on the web server, then copy the new backup files and open those in the Unlimited application. Does anybody know of an easy way to do this or know of something that has already been created? Thanks!
