    Hi! This is probably a very stupid question, but how can I Auto Enter a value in one record based on the value of a previous record. What I'm trying to do is produce a milage book, where the end milage on one record (Day) is the start milage on the next. Look Up's seem to only work with other tables and I'm less than useless with scripts.... Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, Ben.

    I have just recently purchased Filemaker Server 7 to run on my companies network. I have about 15 workstations that are going to access the databases at a given time. My question is, does each workstation have to have Filemker Pro installed on them, or can I install the Filemaker Pro on the server only and have all the workstation access the datbases through that. Any help on this would be appreciated as I am looking to have this rectified by the middle of the week.

    Hello all, Just posting a solution that took me a very LONG time to find so I thought I would share it with you and hopefully save you A LOT of frustration. If you plan on using Filemaker Server advanced with ODBC be warned that when copying the xDBC plugin over to the appropriate folder on a windows 2000 server, the files are READ ONLY. Don't forget to change this, otherwise the port 2399 will not open on your server and connections will not be possible. Furthemore, neither filemaker nor windows will give you any error.     Hi, Here's attached a FM5 and a FM7 file. I'm using this tip to parse out a category from a multiline field (through a script for real). As there may be multiple matches, I'm locating the longer one with this technique. The Last( ) function isn't returning the correct result with 7 right now, or may be I am missing something. If all fields are indexed, then it works though.

    I just ran into a minor issue when I upgraded to Filemake Pro 7v2 from version 6. I am unsure if the problem is with FM, or whether it is related to QK. Basically, when I open a Filemaker file directly (either by doubleclicking it or from within FM) everything works great. However, if I attempt to use a QK shortcut to open it I get a dialog box asking me for an account name and Password to open it with. The Filemaker file is not PW protected and opens fine directly without any rigamarole about passwords if I open it directly. In the dialog box that asks for account name and password I tried my Mac Account Name and my administrator PW but that doesn't work. FM files opened…

This will mainly be used so that a manager and their secretary can work on the same pool of records, log in, and know which ones have been updated, and therefore, need to be reviewed by them.     Hi all, I'm making a database for my company, but I'm not really a computer guy, so I'm sort of faking it. The problem that I'm having is the following: I have six tables that all need to be related to each other by the field 'Construct Number' (and some of the tables need additional matches based on date). And indeed in the relationship chart, I can set all the Construct Numbers in each table to match each other. But when I try to insert a field from the Construct Table in another layout, the field simply is blank, as though it's not making the match and therefore not matching the records from each of the tables.     Hi- I have a script in a database that does a lookup on Amazon and pulls in book information. How it works is that i input an ISBN in the ISBN field and press a button that runs a lookup script using Amazon's Web Services and pulls in the Title, Author, Publisher, Price, etc. into the respective fields. What I want to know is: How can i run this script on every record at once? I want to import a list of ISBNs and have the script run on every record. This would be easy as a lookup, but I have never done this using an external source like Amazon. Any help is appreciated. I dont want to have to press the button for each record!

  15. I have table that has a self-join.. The relationship is working fine.. I can show the related values I'm interested in in a portal... but I'd rather not. I'd rather just show a message to my user saying "there are related records for this record" using a merge field or something like that.   16. Hi, Does anyone here know if it's possible to import Autocad .dwg files into filemaker pro 7 and have them show up on the screen as a graphic instead of just the filename? I'm making a database for my employer (in manufacturing) and they wanted to have their engineers or anything else doing a search for past quotes and jobs to be able to easily see the autocad drawings on the screen. I thought about converting them into another file format but if there was a way to just have the original drawings it would be much more elegant and better for what I want to be able to do.

When another user opens the layout, they get a "the file "..." can not be found" message where the image should be.     I'm having with a tracking idea. I have 2 tables, jobs and line items. I'm trying to show the status of all related line items on the jobs layout. ex. the jobs layout has "ironing required" field that shows it's needed. Each line item has the same field. I'm trying to get the jobs layout to show "ironing needed", even if only one record needs it. Currently, when the first related record is "needed", it shows, otherwise it's ignoring the other related records. Please help.   21. I am having trouble with the ScriptMaker. I have a large database, I select find for a group of records to display on a record, then I want to send a copy of the template to a person via email. Unless I do a Preview after I have done my find of records, then do a Select All, Open up a word or excell document and select the Paste function, nothing works. I also have a lot of distortion of sizing and fonts, etc.

    In the Edit Scripts dialog box, there is a Script Step Options section. Depending on the commands you choose from the left side of the dialog box, check boxes are displayed in the Options section. FM v.6.0 had a check box labeled Request Find Scripts and FM v7.0 has a check box labeled Specify Find Requests. Why are these labeled differently? Would they give the same end result if these check boxes are checked? Is there anything more that we need to do before we click OK in the Edit Script dialog box? Thanks Srilakshmi

    Hi Guys I have a problem perfoming a find in FM7. I created a database in FM 6 for entering all my invoices. I created a script that would let me see how much I had invoiced in any month and year. Within the script I used a "Set Field" function for the month and year. I had the 'Report Month' as a drop down menu with a value list laid ouy as follows. 1 - Jan 2 - Feb 3 - Mar..etc In FM6 when I set this Global field as a number the find criteria would only pick up the number part of the field.     I noticed since updating to v7.03 accessing remote files (even over internet) is significantly faster ( no lag to see list of remote files. previously even over gigbit network was a second or so delay. The bug where selecting parts of text which has a font smaller that the minimun size for text smoothing (mac OS pref) is impossibly difficult is still around though. Anyone else see any differences?

I am trying to do it local before I do it external on the server.     I've got an interesting problem. I have a number of layouts that consist of mostly static text and a few merge fields (they're form letters). At the bottom is a container (global) that has a bitmap signature image in it. It all looks great on screen, but when I print it the signature shifts vertically relative to the text so that its in the way wrong place. I've tried it with out the container and the image just pasted into the layout -- same problem. This layout has other graphic elements as well, and they line up just fine with each other. Any ideas? Basically want the project eng. to login request a job and then be able to review there request later down the line. I have FM Server running on Mac OS Server 10.2x directly connected to the internet through a network hub (not a router) and then through to the cable modem. 3 desktop Macs (OS 10.3x & 10.2x) are also directly connected through this same network hub. There are several laptops (Macs & pc's) that connect to the internet via a wireless router that is also connected to this same network hub. The wireless router's ip is assigned by DHCP. The 3 desktop Macs and the Server Mac all have static ip's assigned by our ISP and are in the same range. Trying to use the Personnel Records template and the Time Card template to set up a Time Card database for a small business. I've created a relationship between the two with little difficulty. I added a Hourly Wage field to Personnel Records for each emlpoyee. Also added a calculated field to Time Card to show total $$$ for hours posted. So far so good. I was hoping to consolidate this into one file called People. My intent was to filter each office with just the people that they need to see. Development sees alumni, parents, former parents.   45. I designed a little system that uses looping scripts to achieve some of it's tasks. I don't want to use the system while Filemaker is doing it's thing, and I'd rather not dedicate an entire machine just to these looping scripts. The source file is hosted on a machine running Filemaker Server. I was wondering if there would be any problem with running 2 copies of FMPro7 on the same machine under different user accounts ? One for general use of the file and the other just for the scripts. In order to edit a record, I want to pass RecID over to Editor, and create a relationship RecID :: _RecID (_RecID being global). Number fields in version 7 do not ignore text characters until a numeric calculation is performed on the field or it is referenced inside GetAsNumber. Length(numberfield) returns 4 for "0001" and "FRED", whereas previous versions would return 1 and zero. Left( numberfield; 1 ) returns "A" for "A12", versus "1" in previous versions. Length(GetAsNumber(numberfield)) and Left( GetAsNumber(numberfield); 1 ) produce results consistent with previous versions. It has an "action required" field, which allows the manager to type in something like "please make copies and give to Mr. Smith" The file is on a server.     I've got an old project that I'm bringing back from the dead. It was originally created in FM Pro 5 and consists of 5 separate databases each with one table. Now that I'm using version 7 I'm considering starting over and recreating all 5 tables in one database. None of them need to stand alone. I like the idea of combining them so that I only have one project file but I'm not sure if it's worth the trouble to recreate all of them. The questions: Is there a way to import or combine tables?     I just updated from 6.0 to 7.0. I have many documents that use repeating fields (portals are a mystery to me -- I'm an end user not a computer guru). All docs work fine, except one. It is basically an invoice document and the repeating fields aren't doing their look ups, except on the first line. I've been told the only way to fix this is to use Portals. Is there a work around?

    I am making a database that holds information of businesses who have put advertising in out magazine (prices/ ad size etc). The main divider of this database is year and category. I have a drop down menu that lists all the years that exist in the advertisers table (using the 'from table' value list).   62. I need help! Or tell me I'm making this too difficult and there is an easier way!! It's driving me crazy! I have two tabels (Company and Contacts). The goal that I'm trying to achieve is to be in the Company table with a portal showing the different contacts for that particular company. We have 4 main types of contacts for each company... Reporting, Billing, Shipping, and Purchasing. We can have multiple contacts for each category. I'd like to do this to run some scripts that occur periodically using a plugin and would prefer to not have to devote another computer to this task.   65. Has anyone noticed this as well? I have a calc container field that displays a variety of color highlights depending on the value of another field. I've set the graphics format for the container field to "enlarge" and deselect "maintain original proportions" and set the borders to "none." In v2 and earlier, the container field would fully display the color highlight (from edge to edge), but now with v3, the highlight stops short "one line" width from the edges.     I'm porting our Access DB into FileMaker 7 and was surprised that things I took for granted in Access or Excel don't seem to be available in FM.   70. On one of four computers sharing access to a db the window jumps up and hides the title bar behind the toolbar when the user switches layouts. All layout changes are handled by scripts triggered by buttons. The scripts go to the specified layout and move/resize the window. The move sets the upper left corner to 1,1. If the window is manually moved and the script run again, it appears that the window very briefly moves to the correct position and then hides. When creating a pdf file through the print dialogue, the pdf renders the same incorrect image seen on the monitor. Tiff files render perfectly on the monitor, but do not print properly on an inkjet printer nor a postscript laser printer. In my app, one piece of data is typically copied and pasted by users from a variety of sources. That piece of data is then re-used (via text calculations) in a variety of other fields. She is running XP on a 3.0 GHz P4 with a gig of RAM. The person that is right next to her that is on a slightly slower machine has no problem at all. And they both have administrative rights.     Hi, how do I go about locking specific redords in 7 ? This is what I want to do 1/ Create a new record 2/ Enter the data 3/ Lock the record. I'd like to be able to overide the lock without too much difficulty, should I need to. I want to have certain scripts use either one. I have seperate scripts for each print process, and each script results in one print, either to the regular printer, or to the label writer.     In FMP 6, you can start the name of your fields with an underscore "_" and they will sort to the bottom of the list when you do a "Sort by Name". However, in FMP7, these fields sort to the top with a name sort. eg. _DateCreate _DateModify _NameCreate _NameModify _g_number _g_text afield anotherfield What character can be used to make the fields go to the bottom of the list? I don't want users to get confused if they see a bunch of developer fields at the top of the list.

I've built a little system that sends email attachments from Filemaker (using Xmail the AppleScripting addition) I'm concerned that after my users upload files to the system, they may delete the file reference or rename the file, in which case, the referenced file's path will be inconsistent with where Filemaker thinks the file is.. so, when the system tries to email the attachment, the email will fail (or at least the attachment will fail).     FM7 eliminates text wrapping within the files it converts from FM6. Words get cut off at the end of sentences and pickup on the next line. I have tried to clone the file and then import the data, but that hasn't worked. The only solution I've seen and tried that has worked is to create a new fm7 file and then import the data. But as a practical matter, I can spend hours and hours of time recreating all my old data bases. I need to convert my old files and keep text wrapping. Does anyone know how to do this?

  89. I have a interesting problem when I take the focus away from a phone number field. I have a script that automatically formats the data to the appropriate type ex: when you enter 1223334444 it then converts to (122)333-4444 The script works fine(that part atleast). When I lose focus of that field and tab or click on another the data changes to this: -1.2233e+09 Why is that happening and how can I tell my script to retain the calculation? In better words, there are 7 core database files (that rarely change), and several hundred "modual" files (these modual depend on the core files). Each client has all of the core files, but a different amount of the modual files, depending on thier needs.     I may give up on FMP7 after all. It is back to forgetting both its last sort and layout. For example, I hit ctrl-j to show all records, put it in either List or Main view, sort with most recent date first, put with the cursor on the top record, and close. When I open again, it's in List view (whether I closed in List or Main) with the cursor way down in the middle of the database, and sorted to an old, previous sorting order. I had this problem before; at that time I removed all scripts and button assignments before converting the file from version 6 to 7, and that seemed to fix it.     Using FM 7.0v3 Today I entered into find mode for one of my layouts. I did not enter any data into any fields on the layout and just hit the find button. Normally FM will display all records but this time it displayed an error saying, "There are no valid criteria in this request. Type a valid request before clicking Find." I tried the same on other files and tables and all the same. What does this mean? Do I have to enter data to do a find now? This has never happened before.
