Has anyone ever developed a MARC record decoder database? I found one possible solution at http://www.sumware.co.nz/athenaeum/marc.php but the download is not working. I would be HIGHLY interested if anyone knows of any developments.

Hi! This is probably a very stupid question, but how can I Auto Enter a value in one record based on the value of a previous record. What I'm trying to do is produce a milage book, where the end milage on one record (Day) is the start milage on the next. Look Up's seem to only work with other tables and I'm less than useless with scripts.... Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, Ben.

I have just recently purchased Filemaker Server 7 to run on my companies network. I have about 15 workstations that are going to access the databases at a given time. My question is, does each workstation have to have Filemker Pro installed on them, or can I install the Filemaker Pro on the server only and have all the workstation access the datbases through that. Any help on this would be appreciated as I am looking to have this rectified by the middle of the week.

Hello all, Just posting a solution that took me a very LONG time to find so I thought I would share it with you and hopefully save you A LOT of frustration. If you plan on using Filemaker Server advanced with ODBC be warned that when copying the xDBC plugin over to the appropriate folder on a windows 2000 server, the files are READ ONLY. Don't forget to change this, otherwise the port 2399 will not open on your server and connections will not be possible. Furthemore, neither filemaker nor windows will give you any error. As there may be multiple matches, I'm locating the longer one with this technique. The Last( ) function isn't returning the correct result with 7 right now, or may be I am missing something. If all fields are indexed, then it works though.

I just ran into a minor issue when I upgraded to Filemake Pro 7v2 from version 6. I am unsure if the problem is with FM, or whether it is related to QK. Basically, when I open a Filemaker file directly (either by doubleclicking it or from within FM) everything works great. However, if I attempt to use a QK shortcut to open it I get a dialog box asking me for an account name and Password to open it with. The Filemaker file is not PW protected and opens fine directly without any rigamarole about passwords if I open it directly. In the dialog box that asks for account name and password I tried my Mac Account Name and my administrator PW but that doesn't work. FM files opened…

I'm attempting to create a way for my database system to show the user whether the record has been updated since their last login. This will mainly be used so that a manager and their secretary can work on the same pool of records, log in, and know which ones have been updated, and therefore, need to be reviewed by them. I've got it working. Some of the important fields are.. Hi all, I'm making a database for my company, but I'm not really a computer guy, so I'm sort of faking it. The problem that I'm having is the following: I have six tables that all need to be related to each other by the field 'Construct Number' (and some of the tables need additional matches based on date). And indeed in the relationship chart, I can set all the Construct Numbers in each table to match each other. But when I try to insert a field from the Construct Table in another layout, the field simply is blank, as though it's not making the match and therefore not matching the records from each of the tables. Hi- I have a script in a database that does a lookup on Amazon and pulls in book information. How it works is that i input an ISBN in the ISBN field and press a button that runs a lookup script using Amazon's Web Services and pulls in the Title, Author, Publisher, Price, etc. into the respective fields. What I want to know is: How can i run this script on every record at once? I want to import a list of ISBNs and have the script run on every record. This would be easy as a lookup, but I have never done this using an external source like Amazon. Any help is appreciated. I dont want to have to press the button for each record!

I have table that has a self-join.. The relationship is working fine.. I can show the related values I'm interested in in a portal... but I'd rather not. I'd rather just show a message to my user saying "there are related records for this record" using a merge field or something like that. Is there a way I can achieve that ? seems like it should be pretty simple.. ?? thanks

Hi, Does anyone here know if it's possible to import Autocad .dwg files into filemaker pro 7 and have them show up on the screen as a graphic instead of just the filename? I'm making a database for my employer (in manufacturing) and they wanted to have their engineers or anything else doing a search for past quotes and jobs to be able to easily see the autocad drawings on the screen. I thought about converting them into another file format but if there was a way to just have the original drawings it would be much more elegant and better for what I want to be able to do.

Could someone tell me why when I edit a layout that is hosted by FMServer7, by inserting a .png file to the layout.. that the file is not saved to the layout ? When another user opens the layout, they get a "the file "..." can not be found" message where the image should be. Also, could someone tell me why the date formatting on a related date field in a portal doesn't seem to respond to Format-date commands ? (in a date field in a portal, I'm trying to set the date to leave off the year, and it's just not working.. the year still shows up)

Hi guys. I have a question about sub-summaries and preview layouts. I have a layout that shows a list of classes and sorts them in a certain order via subsummaries, one of which is Teacher. I cannot for the life of me figure out the following:

I'm having with a tracking idea. I have 2 tables, jobs and line items. I'm trying to show the status of all related line items on the jobs layout. ex. the jobs layout has "ironing required" field that shows it's needed. Each line item has the same field. I'm trying to get the jobs layout to show "ironing needed", even if only one record needs it. Currently, when the first related record is "needed", it shows, otherwise it's ignoring the other related records. Please help. I am having trouble with the ScriptMaker. I have a large database, I select find for a group of records to display on a record, then I want to send a copy of the template to a person via email. Unless I do a Preview after I have done my find of records, then do a Select All, Open up a word or excell document and select the Paste function, nothing works. I also have a lot of distortion of sizing and fonts, etc.

In the Edit Scripts dialog box, there is a Script Step Options section. Depending on the commands you choose from the left side of the dialog box, check boxes are displayed in the Options section. FM v.6.0 had a check box labeled Request Find Scripts and FM v7.0 has a check box labeled Specify Find Requests. Why are these labeled differently? Would they give the same end result if these check boxes are checked? Is there anything more that we need to do before we click OK in the Edit Script dialog box? Thanks Srilakshmi

Hi Guys I have a problem perfoming a find in FM7. I created a database in FM 6 for entering all my invoices. I created a script that would let me see how much I had invoiced in any month and year. Within the script I used a "Set Field" function for the month and year. I had the 'Report Month' as a drop down menu with a value list laid ouy as follows. 1 - Jan 2 - Feb 3 - Mar..etc In FM6 when I set this Global field as a number the find criteria would only pick up the number part of the field. I know this may be a bit basic for you lot, at least I hope it is, but I've created a whole job logging database and need to simply search down the 10 duplicate fields I have created down the page. 6 columns, but you have to perform your find in every field! I need some way to relate the fields so they input seperately but all search at once. I noticed since updating to v7.03 accessing remote files (even over internet) is significantly faster ( no lag to see list of remote files. previously even over gigbit network was a second or so delay. The bug where selecting parts of text which has a font smaller that the minimun size for text smoothing (mac OS pref) is impossibly difficult is still around though. Anyone else see any differences?

I am new to filemaker pro and server. I have downloaded both and have been trying to figure out how to create a webpage in which elements can be filled in and sent to a server. I am trying to do it local before I do it external on the server. I have a filemaker pro file which is complete I however need to have it so that I have a login, and then people come and fill in information in to the area's and recieve information after filling out the form. Is there any where detailed information of this is posted for newbs. I have tried the filemaker mannuels and am struggling to understand them. Any help would be great. Thanks

I've got an interesting problem. I have a number of layouts that consist of mostly static text and a few merge fields (they're form letters). At the bottom is a container (global) that has a bitmap signature image in it. It all looks great on screen, but when I print it the signature shifts vertically relative to the text so that its in the way wrong place. I've tried it with out the container and the image just pasted into the layout -- same problem. This layout has other graphic elements as well, and they line up just fine with each other. Any ideas? Is it possible to create a calculation so that they will reformat like this (last name first): "Franklin, Gene F." [color:"red"] and place each authors name in their own field ? When I click the Specify button in the Script Step Options section, the Specify Script Options dialog box does not display any "External Script" options. Does FM 7.0 provide an option to select External Scripts? If so, how do I choose External Scripts in FileMaker Pro v 7.0? Thanks Srilakshmi

Basically want the project eng. to login request a job and then be able to review there request later down the line. I have FM Server running on Mac OS Server 10.2x directly connected to the internet through a network hub (not a router) and then through to the cable modem. 3 desktop Macs (OS 10.3x & 10.2x) are also directly connected through this same network hub. There are several laptops (Macs & pc's) that connect to the internet via a wireless router that is also connected to this same network hub. The wireless router's ip is assigned by DHCP. The 3 desktop Macs and the Server Mac all have static ip's assigned by our ISP and are in the same range. I'm new at this but I'm sure some of you know exactly what I need to do. Trying to use the Personnel Records template and the Time Card template to set up a Time Card database for a small business. I've created a relationship between the two with little difficulty. I added a Hourly Wage field to Personnel Records for each emlpoyee. Also added a calculated field to Time Card to show total $$$ for hours posted. So far so good. What I don't understand how to do is IF and WHEN an employee wage changes and you change it on their Personel Record it updates PAST weeks of hours posted. Example... Currently in FM 6, I have several files holding people information at our school. (Teachers, students, alumni, parents, former parents, trustees). It is a nightmare. I was hoping to consolidate this into one file called People. My intent was to filter each office with just the people that they need to see. Development sees alumni, parents, former parents. Hello, first post... Novice user with FM7, I have exhausted my search elsewhere, including my book. I just can't seem to get over this wall, I appreciate your advice. I have a large database of names that I have created a table, and layouts. I have also created layouts for various letters. My goal is to do a search in the database to pull up a name, transfer that name to a new layout, then print a letter to each name I have found. To be more specific, my database consists of 160k names/addresses. I find a particular address (a physical street address), enter a search, and the name is found. I designed a little system that uses looping scripts to achieve some of it's tasks. I don't want to use the system while Filemaker is doing it's thing, and I'd rather not dedicate an entire machine just to these looping scripts. The source file is hosted on a machine running Filemaker Server. I was wondering if there would be any problem with running 2 copies of FMPro7 on the same machine under different user accounts ? One for general use of the file and the other just for the scripts. If that wouldn't be a problem, would I want to make a copy of the Filemaker Pro 7 folder and run that copy of FMPro 7 on the other user account ?

I would like to have a window Editor to Edit or Add New Customers. This window Editor opens in a new window. In order to edit a record, I want to pass RecID over to Editor, and create a relationship RecID :: _RecID (_RecID being global). In order to do that, I need an existing relationship, say Constant :: _Constant. In FM6, you could pick... use Constant Relationship to pass RecID, and use RecID to pass the values back, once edited. I haven't seen this discussed anywhere, but it seems worthy of note. Number fields in version 7 do not ignore text characters until a numeric calculation is performed on the field or it is referenced inside GetAsNumber. Length(numberfield) returns 4 for "0001" and "FRED", whereas previous versions would return 1 and zero. Left( numberfield; 1 ) returns "A" for "A12", versus "1" in previous versions. Length(GetAsNumber(numberfield)) and Left( GetAsNumber(numberfield); 1 ) produce results consistent with previous versions. I have several computers still on the original version of fm7. Do I need to apply the second update and then the third? Or can I just apply this latest one to each computer and will changes in vs. 2 be automatically included? i emailed filemaker but haven't heard back. I have a database that has a spreadsheet like layout. It has an "action required" field, which allows the manager to type in something like "please make copies and give to Mr. Smith" The file is on a server. The system (which is served via FM server 7, is operated on by a drone computer running a scheduled script that loops through the records looking for flagged records every few minutes and sends an email to the manager's assistant that tells the assistant what action is required for which record. I've got an old project that I'm bringing back from the dead. It was originally created in FM Pro 5 and consists of 5 separate databases each with one table. Now that I'm using version 7 I'm considering starting over and recreating all 5 tables in one database. None of them need to stand alone. I like the idea of combining them so that I only have one project file but I'm not sure if it's worth the trouble to recreate all of them. The questions: Is there a way to import or combine tables? Are there advantages or disadvantages to having my tables combined or separated?

I just updated from 6.0 to 7.0. I have many documents that use repeating fields (portals are a mystery to me -- I'm an end user not a computer guru). All docs work fine, except one. It is basically an invoice document and the repeating fields aren't doing their look ups, except on the first line. I've been told the only way to fix this is to use Portals. Is there a work around?

Hi I have a form that has a portal in it. When I try to print a record, IF the portal is empty, then it prints the last record that had a portal record in it. I have recently made a table to contain info about Potential Customers which our sales reps profile... I want to make a script which will move basic info about said company(contactcode name address etc.) to our Contacts DB. Both tables are located in the same file. I guess my question is..Is it possible to move one record to another file without importing to a global variables table and then into the target table? I am making a database that holds information of businesses who have put advertising in out magazine (prices/ ad size etc). The main divider of this database is year and category. I have a drop down menu that lists all the years that exist in the advertisers table (using the 'from table' value list). Next to that i have a field where i want to display the total revenue for the selected year. Attatched is a picture of the tables and their relationships.

Is it possible to create report headers when exporting reports to HTML? I have tried the XML stuff and that works, but the field names show the table::record and that doesn't look so good. I would just like to put titles on the HTML reports. Thanks for the help on this.

Is it okay to run Filemaker Pro on a the computer running Filemaker Server 7 to connect to the local server ? I'd like to do this to run some scripts that occur periodically using a plugin and would prefer to not have to devote another computer to this task. Has anyone noticed this as well? I have a calc container field that displays a variety of color highlights depending on the value of another field. I've set the graphics format for the container field to "enlarge" and deselect "maintain original proportions" and set the borders to "none." In v2 and earlier, the container field would fully display the color highlight (from edge to edge), but now with v3, the highlight stops short "one line" width from the edges. This is problematic because my layouts needs these containers to be precise. Was this intentional, or another bug to be fixed (or reverted to the prior version) in the next release? Any thou…

I have a portal that shows a list of clients (FirstName, LastName, ClientNo). I want to be able to click a button that goes into find mode, you enter the first or last name of the client and when you click enter it brings up the relevant client information. I'm porting our Access DB into FileMaker 7 and was surprised that things I took for granted in Access or Excel don't seem to be available in FM. Of course this could all be operator error but I can't seem to find the answer on my own. Right now I woud like to dfine a format mask for the phone number fields. In Access a number field can have a phone number mask applied. Is this possible in FMP? Any help that you can give me will be greatly appreciated.

On one of four computers sharing access to a db the window jumps up and hides the title bar behind the toolbar when the user switches layouts. All layout changes are handled by scripts triggered by buttons. The scripts go to the specified layout and move/resize the window. The move sets the upper left corner to 1,1. If the window is manually moved and the script run again, it appears that the window very briefly moves to the correct position and then hides. It only seems to happen when the user logs in with full access privileges. It has never been observed on any of the other computers, regardless of access privileges. When using eps files in a container field, the monitor view is distorted, but prints perfectly. When creating a pdf file through the print dialogue, the pdf renders the same incorrect image seen on the monitor. Tiff files render perfectly on the monitor, but do not print properly on an inkjet printer nor a postscript laser printer. If I convert the graphic file to a pdf or pict file and import it into my container field, the graphic is pixelated on the monitor, but prints perfectly to both printers, however the pdf created through the print dialogue renders the image perfectly in the created pdf document. Hi Everyone, I have been working on Filemaker Pro 5 version and now we would like to move ahead to Filemaker Pro 7. Could you please share your experience in the conversion process. I have already downloaded the pdf's available(migration, converting, server upgrade, security etc). I started the conversion process slowly and I found that it would be much better to rewrite the code instead of converting the old files to use the one file and may tables feature in filemaker pro 7. I just loaded the 7.0v3 update, and one change in behavior is causing me problems: Data pasted into a field now retains text formatting (color, font, size) from the source document. In my app, one piece of data is typically copied and pasted by users from a variety of sources. That piece of data is then re-used (via text calculations) in a variety of other fields. Until I ran the update, each of those other fields could have its own display characteristics (color, font, size) set in the layout. I have a multi-user helpdesk and I would like to develop a drop box where each of the users can pull their own name down and that would initiate the script that sorts the jobs and presents the job list. I have been able to create the scripts that get the proper layout/report to show. How do I link the selection field to say "If (staff select) = "Nate" then run script1 TIA.

I have a user that whenever she attempts to delete a record out of one of the databases. The FM 7 program just hangs and gives a not responding message. She is running XP on a 3.0 GHz P4 with a gig of RAM. The person that is right next to her that is on a slightly slower machine has no problem at all. And they both have administrative rights. Anyone have any ideas???

Hi, how do I go about locking specific redords in 7 ? This is what I want to do 1/ Create a new record 2/ Enter the data 3/ Lock the record. I'd like to be able to overide the lock without too much difficulty, should I need to. Previously I would have put a scripted button across the top of the entire record, either allowing or blocking the editing of fields, but I have a feeling that this has been improved in 7. Is there a simple, elegant way of locking records on a per record basis ? Any help, guidance, comments, much appreciated!

This is similar to another thread I see going on, except in this case I am using FMP 7, while they are using 5.5. I have a label printer, and a normal printer. I want to have certain scripts use either one. I have seperate scripts for each print process, and each script results in one print, either to the regular printer, or to the label writer. The label should default to a custom label size, and portrait layout. I do a page setup script step with no dialog, restore settings, but the settings don't seem to take. Apology i posted in the wrong area initially I have recently made a table to contain info about Potential Customers which our sales reps profile... I want to make a script which will move basic info about said company(contactcode name address etc.) to our Contacts DB. Both tables are located in the same file. i am trying to get my pop-up list width to be the width of my longest entry. im populating it with multiple fields from a related table (people's names) so there is no telling how many characters wide i need my list. no matter the font size it still cuts off the list items at the same point (about 18 characters) is there a way to set the list to be as wide as it needs to show all text?

In FMP 6, you can start the name of your fields with an underscore "_" and they will sort to the bottom of the list when you do a "Sort by Name". However, in FMP7, these fields sort to the top with a name sort. eg. _DateCreate _DateModify _NameCreate _NameModify _g_number _g_text afield anotherfield What character can be used to make the fields go to the bottom of the list? I don't want users to get confused if they see a bunch of developer fields at the top of the list.

Hi i'm a newbie to FileMaker so excuse my ignorance. I've had a look on the forums but haven't seen anything specific to what i need to find out. I'm aware that i will need to design different layouts to fit certain screen resolutions to utilise the whole area of the screen. so does anyone know if its possible to use scriptmaker to run a script that autodetects the screen resolution and loads the relevent layout with the database? thanks.

Is there a website from which to down load icons to be use in making buttons. I thought using FM graphics (squares and circles) would be adequate but I am just not an artist. Symbles for files, pages, printing, filing, charting, editing... are desired. Thanks in advance.

I've built a little system that sends email attachments from Filemaker (using Xmail the AppleScripting addition) I'm concerned that after my users upload files to the system, they may delete the file reference or rename the file, in which case, the referenced file's path will be inconsistent with where Filemaker thinks the file is.. so, when the system tries to email the attachment, the email will fail (or at least the attachment will fail). Is there a way I can verify the file paths from Filemaker before the system tries to act on them ? or... could someone recommend another plan of action ? FM7 eliminates text wrapping within the files it converts from FM6. Words get cut off at the end of sentences and pickup on the next line. I have tried to clone the file and then import the data, but that hasn't worked. The only solution I've seen and tried that has worked is to create a new fm7 file and then import the data. But as a practical matter, I can spend hours and hours of time recreating all my old data bases. I need to convert my old files and keep text wrapping. Does anyone know how to do this?

Does FM7 allow the user to select more than one record at a time like the Appleworks database?

I have a interesting problem when I take the focus away from a phone number field. I have a script that automatically formats the data to the appropriate type ex: when you enter 1223334444 it then converts to (122)333-4444 The script works fine(that part atleast). When I lose focus of that field and tab or click on another the data changes to this: -1.2233e+09 Why is that happening and how can I tell my script to retain the calculation? The field is defined as a number and auto enters the calculated value. Thanks! Chris

My company's flagship product needs constant client updating. In better words, there are 7 core database files (that rarely change), and several hundred "modual" files (these modual depend on the core files). Each client has all of the core files, but a different amount of the modual files, depending on thier needs. I get at least one request a day "this client need this modual", or we've completed a new modual, and now needs to be distributed to the client(s) that ordered it. How do I open new windows in front in FM7? Close others? I'm trying to have Window A, when click, OPEN Window B in FRONT for editing Window A, then ON SUBMIT, close Window B, return to a refreshed Window A. Also, a side question: I'm leaning on designing this new database with individual files. I know that with FM7 you can design all files as TABLES and have one, all encompassing, file. What would happen where this one, all encompassing, file to crash, get corrupted, or other mishap? Are my instincts correct? I have 8,5x11 sheets of cards divided into equal quarters. I wish to address these cards to 4 different addresees per sheet. When I place fields on the cards, each card prints the record 4 times on each sheet. How do I print a different record on each of the 4 places on each card???

i want to create a record edit history/log. what i have now is a timestamp that auto-updates itself each time something is edited in the record. what i'd like is for the time stamps not to be replaced each time the record is edited.. sorry just a beginner here.

I may give up on FMP7 after all. It is back to forgetting both its last sort and layout. For example, I hit ctrl-j to show all records, put it in either List or Main view, sort with most recent date first, put with the cursor on the top record, and close. When I open again, it's in List view (whether I closed in List or Main) with the cursor way down in the middle of the database, and sorted to an old, previous sorting order. I had this problem before; at that time I removed all scripts and button assignments before converting the file from version 6 to 7, and that seemed to fix it. But now, with no scripts added (button assignments put back in), the problem is back …

Using FM 7.0v3 Today I entered into find mode for one of my layouts. I did not enter any data into any fields on the layout and just hit the find button. Normally FM will display all records but this time it displayed an error saying, "There are no valid criteria in this request. Type a valid request before clicking Find." I tried the same on other files and tables and all the same. What does this mean? Do I have to enter data to do a find now? This has never happened before. Are my files corrupted, or has Filemaker changed the find mode in FM 7? Can someone enlighten me.

Hi all- I'm developing a solution in v7.3 (Mac), and using sharing and IWP (not from Adv. server). Randomly (it seems), I cannot login remotely, either via the web or the sharing. The only recourse is to roll back to a previous version. this is becoming maddening. thanks for the help! paul
