Hello, I just upgraded to FMD 7 v3 and when I tested my DB in Filemaker everything works great. I then created a runtime to test and the import doesn't work through a script. I created a script so users can backup and restore their data. I have the script setup so they can either have FM do this automatically with their backup data on drive 'c' or they can do a userselect and select were their backup is located. Basically just removing the file name in the import script. The automatic works fine in both export and import, but when they try to import by user select FM doesn't ask were the file is located it just goes through automatically and doesn't actually import an…

Hi all, I am trying to determine if runtimes will do for a project, or if I'm stuck using full copies of FM pro. I'm hoping that you can answer some questions for me. What are the limitation to importing and exporting data when using a runtime (is it possible; if so, what formats can you use; can you export data from one runtime and import it into a different runtime; etc.)? I was trying to create a kiosk for an old mac clone running OS9. At first, I was using Dev7- but found out that I cannot make a solution that works on computer running OS9. I have an old FMdev 5.5- and the only other solution that I can think of is to re-create the project in 5.5 and create the kiosk from there. My question is- will the solution work for this OS9 computer if the development computer is OSX? I need to know this before I install FMdev 5.5 and get to work. Thanks, Catherine

A client of mine asked me to transform various FileMaker files (formerly version 6, now 7) into tables of one file. I purchased FM Migrator and got that to work on a couple of sample files. However, some of the client's files contain spaces, and so FM Migrator barfs (table names cannot contain spaces). I decided to use the Developer Utilities to convert the filenames with spaces to ones without. Unfortunately they don't seem to convert all of the internal file references...so the problem remains. Is this a bug? Or am I missing some other step with the Developer Utilities?

new here. I installed the filemaker developer and have some questions about it. When I open Developer, it looks exactly like FileMaker Pro. When should I use Developer? When I design a new DB for my company, do I do it in FM Pro or in Developer then transfer to Pro? I also tested the Developer Tool. Other than creating .exe file that we can show clients the design demo, what other purposes does it serve? I think the bottom line is that I am not quite sure the relations between Developer and Pro, and the purpose of using devloper regularly? Thanks

Hello, I am making a developer solution lesson plans for teachers. There is a field for procedures that is causing me problems. I am trying to limit the printing to one page, however some teachers go a little nuts writing their procedures. I have tried expanding the fields and sliding, only problem is I get breaks in text across pages. Is there a way to tell developer that if a text area is so long (lines) to print the extra lines on a seperate sheet. I am just a beginner with scripts and all, so please be gentle when explaining. Hi All, I have a newbie-ish question about FM runtimes. I'm considering using FM for a project I would normally use Macromedia Director for because it is purely database material, nothing in the video, audio multimedia interface. Just the basics ... search, browse and print records. I've heard FM Developer has a "kiosk" mode but I would like the opposite. I was wondering if I can restrict the runtime window area to a specific size, say 800 X 600 that the user can't adjust TIA, Randy

I'm sure I'm not the only one to have this complaint. I design and develop a solution with full-access (admin) and I create new accounts that have limited permissions. Is there any way (other than closing the file and reopening it under the user account) to test permissions while still logged into the database as admin (full access)? Is there a 3rd-party plug-in or any ware that allows this? Thanks, GSG

Hi, I have been making CD's using FMP 5 and FMD 5, and everything was working ok, but now we have gotten the upgrade deal for FMP 7. Am I also going to have to buy FMD 7? Doesn't seem like I can still bind in FMD 5 using FMP 7 files. Can anyone help?? Thanks, Anji

A couple of years ago I purchased FM 5 Developer thinking it was going to make my life a whole lot easier. Well it didn't, should of done a little more research. I eventually did start using some of the features. So know that FM 7 Developer is out, has 7 changed much and is it worth getting?

Hi, Just a quick question about FMPro7 Runtime solutions - two I've seen have 'splash' screens appear when you shut-down the app - both with wording very similar to 'made with filemaker'. Are you forced to include such a screen / or does it indeed appear by default?

I have been working with Filemaker Pro 7 for nearly three months and I recently got filemaker developer for the purpose of creating a runtime executable file to give to a few clients who do not have filemaker. The file is finished and it works properly in filemaker pro. The clients will not need to enter or change any data, only view the results of different finds that all work with scripted buttons and drop-down menus. I believe I've found a nasty problem in FM7 (Developer). When importing a comma delimitted text file FM7 chokes on a 13 record text file, and only brings in 2 lines. (FM6 & FM5 correctly bring in all 13). Looking at the data, I see a double quote symbol at the end of a line that I'm sure is causing the problem. If I substitute a word (Inch) in lieu of the symbol(") fm7 import works ok. This is a serious problem for anyone importing raw text files from external sources (main frames, other applications, etc). Just upgraded to Developer 7 and wishing I had my money back. Besides having previous version runtimes that can't be upgraded and data imported, I also get a DDE server Error under Windows XP-Pro. The error states that another user has the application open and that I have a single user version. The problem is that I am the only one that has opened FM7. Any Clues.

I have a runtime which is comprised of several files. One of the files, Content.fp5, contains pre-written articles which the user selects through a relationship with another database file. I want to be able to provide periodic updates to the content, ideally deleting all previous articles and importing new ones. Here's the problem: I need to be able to retain the text's formatting, particularly the color as text in red indicates to the user that their input is required. The only thing I can think to do is to replace/overwrite the entire file. If anyone has solved this issue through somehow tagging text or XML, I'd love to hear how it was done. Thank you!

Is there anything that can be done about font display quality in preview mode. When I magnify the screen with clients in a board room, using a projector, it just pixelizes and isn't ledgible. Version 6 never did that. The font smoothing option in general>>preferences doesn't cut it. I wish it would just give the option for none and let windows do its thing.

Hi all, I am new to Filemaker Pro and am quite familiar with Microsoft Access. I have been developing a database recently which I now plan to be able to sell or giveaway on the internet. Ideally I want it to be a standalone file (exe) which can interrogate a database and make updates as per the users preferences. For example, I want the user to be able to create a list of their own team members for their development projects. I want each to have an executable file on their computers. Hi there This is for Windows Litterate only. When a filemaker file is on idle, Windows puts the program in back to perform unknown tasks. Unless you shake the mouse, it will remain that way. Is that related to the screen saver? (my screen saver never kicked in when that happenned) Is that related to the disk defragmenter? Is there a way to disable those tasks? Must be simple but I am not a Windows litterate myself!!

I am in the process of developing a database that I need to have 2 copies of. One for the accountant and one for the business. (I'm the accountant) I want to be able to get any changes she makes into the file and import it into mine without overwriting what I've done. We are in 2 locations and she only has a dial up connection. What is the best way to sync my file with hers?

I just received FMD7, installed it on my home mac G4 400 mhz, and started toying with files developed in FMP5. Complex multiloop scripts which took 10-15 seconds in FMP5 are taking 5-15 minutes in FMD7! these scripts ran beautifully in FMP5 in classic mode and on Windows 2kPro and NT. On my mac in 10.2.8 they are interminably slow. Is it that I need a new mac (god forbid!)? Or is there a way to fix this? Why would it run SO MUCH FASTER in classic and FMP5? I thought upgrading to an OS X native app should speed things up, not slow them down! I am learning my way around Filemaker using developer v7. I have redesigned the same database twice. I realise I should have deleted unwanted fields as I went but I did not. Now I have a plethora of fields many of which are not used. I had supposed that Developer would have been able to report whether I had defined fields which were unused in layouts but this does not seem to be the case. Is there a third party tool that will do this? TIA/gary

Hi I have bound a runtime and have found that on a couple of people's PCs the runtime just doesn't do anything when you double click on the primary file. Since it works fine on my PC running XP and it works on some other PC's with XP fine what do you think is the problem? Could it be a corrupted file? Hi, I've been trying to create a simple list view were the items in the list actively link to a detail view of the record. I've use a layout with a transparent button behind the fields however I only get one record showing. Next I tried creating a new "list/report" from the layout menu, I get all the records to show but I can't get the button to work. I've tried to understand what I'm doing wrong by looking at the "business tracker" file were I got the idea of switching between a list and a detail view and I'm missing something. thanks for any help Garth

I have two database files: EmailOrders.fp5 and Assembly.fp5. I'm using the plug-in SMTPit to download an order (e-mail attachment) to my hard drive. Each new attachment is named sequentially upon arrival (Order1.txt, Order2.txt, etc). That name is captured in a field within EmailOrders. I'd like to automate the process of importing these tab-delimited attachments into the Assembly.fp5 database. I thought I could calculate the full path name in EmailOrders, copy it to the clipboard, open the Assembly file, create a new record, paste into an ImportPath field and run an import script. I working on a project that will be distributed to a group of non-profits (stand alone/run time verisons--they will not have the full verison of FM). I have a simple workout schedule FileMaker Pro template I've developed. I have made this available as a runtime solution for downloading, and I'm interested in making this available as a public runtime solution for PDAs. Will buying FileMaker Mobile make this possible? I want it so that users who download this solution don't have to own FileMaker Pro or FileMaker Mobile. If FileMaker Mobile won't do the trick, does anyone have any suggestions how to make runtime solutions public for PDAs?

We are having an intermitent problem with Filemaker reseting our printer and not printing. The 850 dp is a wax printer so you can imagine the expense of restarting it 5 or 10 times. We are running a runtime solution built in Filemaker 6 and using the same file open in Filemaker 6 dev. Sometimes if we open the solution in Filemaker it prints, sometimes we get the same error. We have had to work around this by printing to a pdf and printing from acrobat. Has anyone else had this issue?

I am making a database of locker assignments. Each locker can have up no more then two students. Each record has two student ID fields and locker number field. When a student is assigned a locker their number is put into one of the student ID fields. If two students are partnering, the partner is put into the other student ID field. I set up the field validation so that the two student ID fields are set to be unique values. This prevents a duplicate students in their respective field throughout the database but does not check for cross duplicates. An example of this is as follows. Hi there, I operate a PC (XP). My customer operates a PC (Win 98). I sold a run-time solution to a customer. That solution plays different sounds when his members check in. On my end, the solution works OK but it doesn't play any sound on his end. The sound fields are saved in the Main Menu file. I created a relationship (Calculation = 1) with the member file. The relationshisp is OK on his end because he can see his logo in Member file. When a member checks in, a sound is played out according to his status. So, the check-in script will run a sub-script located in the Main Menu file. But that sub-script is not performed on his PC. In the tool bar,…

Can someone explain why you need to make a new extension with every new runtime solution? I don't understand why this doesn't confuse the other applications. Isn't there a "standard" group of extensions to use instead of making them up? I need to make several runtime solutions of old filmaker archives, each needs to be a stand alone file.

I was recently at the "FileMaker Magnificent 7" tour event and the FileMaker Engineer did a pretty cool trick. Unfortunately, now I need to use that trick, and I don't have any documentation on how he did it. He had a container field holding a quicktime movie, (inserted as a file, not quicktime movie, or linked) and he entered some text into another field, and the field containing the file changed to display the quicktime movie. I need to do this. I need to hold the quicktime file in a field, (not link to a quicktime file), and be able to play it as well. When I use "Insert QuickTime Movie" it only links to the file. I'm using Dev 5.5 on Win XP. One file in a 21 file runtime is not getting its extension changed. I've re-done the scripts and relationships, but still have the problem. Dev 5.5 v1 had a problem with lowercase extensions. I have the updater to v2, but it never runs to completion: it claims it's missing a windows file (which it isn't)...the same thing happens on 2 XP machines. Steve

I want to have related fields between Peper and journalist sothat if i have changed somethimg in paper that changes also in journalist table. The relation between peper and journalist goes via join. I have just created a runtime by binding 18 related files in the developer tool - problem is the scripts for navigation now no longer seem to be working. For example I try to open one related file through a button and up comes the dialog box saying "blahBlah can't be found" , then I am asked to find it. What is going on and how can I fix it? Hello, I have created a runtime solution with FMD7 and I created an install with Tarma installer. The install works great on my PC with XP Pro, but when I install the program on my notebook with XPHome I get an error that complains about registering the FML10.dll. I am not sure what the FML10.dll file is used for, but the program still works even though I get this error. I have had another person state they received the same error on their notebook, but not on their PC. Is it something with XPHome? Centrino chips sets? The file is in the program group so it does get copied. Every other file looks ok from what I can tell, but the installation just stops at that point …

i've bound a runtime under a Win98 emulator and created an installer with inno setup as i've done many times before.i've tested it on two machines. on the one where i bound it worked fine. on a powerbook running the same emulator the installer unpacked the file ok. on launch i got this error: The MSVCP60.DLL file is linked to missing export MSVCRT.DLL:_lc_collate_cp. followd by this box: Unable to execute file: <filename>. A device attached to the system is not functioning. i don't know enough about windows to know what's going on. anyone have a clue? thanks, stefan

I use Troi File with 5.5 Dev on XP. In a runtime, does anyone know whether Developer changes the extension of a file that appears in an External statement. For example, External("TrFile-GetDateCreated", "C:Organized AgentOldPreferences.FP5") does this get changed by Developer to the extension that I'm using? Steve

I have a script where I am trying to enter these results... Date > Date in Related Table Name > Name in Same as above table ID > ID in same as above table All three related fields are visable on the screen which I am copying. It will only enter the results if I have Script Debug ON. If I have SD off it only enters one of the results, the Date. Any Ideas?

I am new to Filemaker Developer. Last spring I called filemaker prior to ordering FMD and asked if I would be able to generate Mac OS X and windows runtime applications from FMD for Mac OS X and the support person said "yes". Thus far I have only been able to to generate runtimes for OS X. Can anyone tell me if I was misinformed or if there is a special process for generating windows runtimes from a Mac OS X machine? I need to throw up an error message when a user attempts to enter all lowercase or all uppercase text in a field. I've been correcting the entries after importing their data using the Proper function, but that's not appropriate for use across the board. Thanks for any suggestions!

I deployed a few filemaker instalations over our network by a grouppolicy.... since i made an msi file...i used the same license key for all of them...but get errors when more then 2 connect to he same dbase....it checks if the serial is the same....offcourse i can reinstall it on the pc's locally with the right serials...but would be easier if i can reset the license key and retype it by editing the registry.....anyone got a clue?

I am building a solution that is cross platform (Mac OS X, Mac OS 9, and Windows). In fact, this is one of the primary reasons for doing this in FileMaker! I have scripts for upgrading solutions. The upgrade scripts record an import from another parallel folder. I instruct the user to rename the old folder and then run the script. The old folder is found and the data copied to the new database. I do my work on OS X and this worked great, even after building the solution with a different extension. Hello, Two questions: Is there a way to have the user select if they want to save changes to a field after making changes. I know this can be turned on or off under layout setup -> save changes automatically. I would like to put a check box or something on the layout so the user can select this. Why didn't they put this under the preferences? Is there a way to create a check box so it would lock down all the fields for a certain record in a layout. I would like the user to be able to select this to protect the records of their choice. The user can save "alert" reminder messages from anywhere in my applicationa and it integrates with the calendar function so that the reminder is a) entered in the calendar and triggers a script to do a "Show Custom Message" (of the reminder)as soon as the user opens the program. I've got a solution that opens up a few windows and during the time that the user does their various data entry tasks some of the windows close (or are supposed to). This works fine while using the developer program, however when I create a standalone runtime solution using the developer utilities I run into problems. All of the windows (including the main initial one) open up and the X on the upper right of the window pane is faded out and I can't close any of the windows?? I've looked for some developer utility option for this but can't see anything relevant. Anyone got any clues? thanks...Sandy

As follows: I have a table which has a bad database design. There is a many to many relationship and it is designed in one table which is a terrible database design. I want to have the layout and informations of that table in two seperated tables. So i want to export the existing one to two another table and there i want to import all the existing information and some fields. Hi everyone, I "grew up" using MS Access, but I am now learning FM to meet my client's needs. I have a question reguarding development style for you all. In Access I was taught to keep the data in one database and the control features in another and then link the two. With FM7 capacity of mulitiple tables, is there any thought or standard for doing the same?

I developed a runtime in kiosk mode which works beautifully on some systems but hangs when opening on others. After binding in FM Dev 6, I processed through an app called Kiosk2Win. Kiosk2Win actually restores access to the user's desktop and gives them the ability to minimize my runtime. The compatibility issue lies with their (Kiosk2Win) code and they can't figure out what's going on. What I'm trying to eliminate is the user's ability to navigate to any other layout, create new records, use any menu commands or keyboard shortcuts (other than cut and paste). Why does filemaker insist on giving me almost 20 megs of Language and dictionary files when it builds a runtime? Is there anyway to disable that? It's nuts. Thanks

Does anyone know if it is possible to get the Filemaker API in another language besides C/C++? It would be great if was available in a managed code language such as C# or VB dot net. If this isn't an option, has anyone tried compiling the API into a DLL and then using the DLL in other programs?

Hi everybody, I'm new to FM and have a good idea for a database that I want to market. The bulk of it is just about done but I'd like to add a dialog box that pops up upon the first launch and asks for a serial number. All the serial will be is a 10 digit number, not generated, or from a list, but just any ol' 10 digits. I just want it to check that 10 numbers have been entered and then give the ok to continue. Or if it's easier to have a list of serial numbers to pick from that's ok too. Just as long as it looks like there's some kind of anti-piracy. I am having a dull moment . I can't figure out a way to display the current user name when a user logs into the database. What I have in the upper lefthand corner of the layout is something like: Welcome! John Doe What is the syntax to create for just doing a simple display of the current user that is logged in? I've sent out a kiosk runtime which, on some W2K machines, is hanging when the solution is attempting to load. Can anyone tell me if the dynamic link library file MSVCRT.dll might have anything to do with it? I've read a Microsoft tech document (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;190536) which talks about that particular .dll, but it's all geek to me. ps- You FM developers are a great bunch of people! I've really benefited from the contributions I've found in these forums.

I am developing a database for a cabinetshop that will have the following four basic components: CABINET DIMENSION INFORMATION MATERIALS & VENDOR INFORMATION LABOR INFORMATION CUSTOMER INFORMATION So far I have been developing everything within one database. The components above each live in a separate table within the database. So I did something dumb.... Playing around with FM Dev 7, I enabled kiosk mode in a .fp7 file. Then I continued to develop a rather complex system using this file. Now I'd like to disable kiosk mode in this file. Am I SOL...(Do I have to rebuild the file from scratch?) or is there a way anyone knows to disable kiosk mode? Dana

Is it just me or did this feature disappear between Developer v6 and v7? I am trying to rename a file through Developer so that it will update all related file references, script references, etc. I can't seem to find the option, and I've tried searching help and this forum. Hello, I have set up the access privileges for the different layouts in the database. When I logged on as a user who does not have access privilege for a certain layout, the layout is gray background with "No Access" on it. How do I make some customized verbage on this "No Access" Layout? thanks in advance for your help.

I just read that I can't usea FM Runtime app's over the network (with other users) unless we use FM Server 7? Is this correct?

I have a perfectly working database solution on my laptop (MAC OSX) and i'm trying to open it remotely from an other computer on the network. I have installed filemaker pro on the other computer and i'm using file maker developer on my own. I have turned on file sharing on both filemaker versions. When I go to the Open remote option, I can see the laptop in the hosts column but no files appear in the available column when I click on the name of the host. Can anyone suggest what is happening here and how i can fix this?? Thanks , CM

I present a Custom Dialog to the user that asks for a Start Date and an End Date. My script then wants to Set Field the user's Start Date, two periods and the user's End Date into the Date Created field. When the script performs this Find, no records show up. However, if I manually enter a date, two periods and another date into the Date Created field, it finds the records that it should. Any ideas? Please let me know if I should provide more info. I am having the darndest time trying to script a button which will delete the contents of a container field. I can manually clear the contents by simply clicking on the field and pressing backspace. But when I try to script a button to do this seemingly simple task, the field will not clear. I have tried such script steps as "clear", "set field" to a null value, "insert calculated result" to a null value, etc. which I use to delete the contents of other non-container type fields. None of them are working. I've double checked that I am running the correct script, referenced the correct field, etc. Someone please tell me that I am not losing my mind... and suggest how I mig…

Hi, recently when upgrading to v2 I ran into a problem. On the "Go to related record." script step I use the Show only related records option. This is so I can sort my records by subject. So, I a have a solution, with an invoice table, and a line item table. I want to total some values in the line item table and show them in the invoice table. I've tried using a calculation field in the invoice table that calculates the fields from the relationship between invoice and line item as described in the help file, but it isn't working for me. Some things I've tried is to make sure the evaluation context is correct, to uncheck the do not evaluate if all referanced fields are empty and the do not replace existing value for field. I have two questions for the hard core programmer out there.... 1) I have a RFID reader in which one of my C programmers is building a tool that can read the data from the RFID device and post it into a table in a database. Currently, we plan to do with with SQL server. Is it posssible to do this into FMP 7? If so, how? ODBC? 2) Is it posssible to write code that executes every 30 seconds? If so, how would I do that? I have a Kiosk mode solution which I've bound in Dev 6 and then processed using Kiosk2Win. The users having difficulty (hanging at launch) are running Dell computers with Windows 2K professional. Kiosk2Win is a program which allows you to run a kiosk mode solution but still give the user complete acess to the desktop. I'm wondering if anyone else has run into anything similar. Is it that the processor on the Dell computers is not compatible?

Hi All-I'm New and have a problem. I'm writng a cash register program for my business. I have a line item table and a cash register table with a portal for the entry of the products sold. The portal makes the individual files in the line item file just fine-including all the lookups to the inventory file(size, price etc...).
