Hi all, I am about to purchase a scanner system for our FileMaker 5.0 servered solution, and, frankly, I am at a loss. Never used one, and know nothing about it... The scanner proposed is called Intermec ScanPlus 1800 from DeltaOne. There're also offering a LP/TLP 2722/2742 label printer, and a label design software. 1. Does anyone have experience with the scanner/printer/company? 2. Do I really need a special printer for labels, or can I use our existing laser/color printers? Thanks for any useful info! BB

Has anyone had good experience with the use of bar code scanning on a PC/Gateway. I've read a lot about MACs but have found limited chat about PCs. Especially regarding the Unitech MS690?!?

I am looking for a wireless barcode scanning solution. I would like a worker to be able to grab the scanner from a recharge/docking base, use it all day scanning bar codes, recording the time the code was scanned and place it in the base at night. Then the data stored can be automatically transfered to a FMP database for later processing. Is there a Barcode scanner on the market that can do this or will I have to get a palm based solution? Can anyone recommend any products I can look at?

We have a Dyno printer (330) and am trying to use it with an FMP 5.5 application. I can get my application to print to my HP laser, but not the Dyno. I get an error message showing that there is no printer attached. Yet under printer setup it's there. I'm on a Windows XP Professional using a USB port. Any help you can offer would be appreciated. Thank you.

I am in need of a label printer that will print a large number of labels directly from filemaker pro on a mac or PC. The size of label is very small about 20mm x 10mm. Is such a printer readily available, and is it easy to set up and use for a beginner like myself?

Anybody have any recommendations for Barcode Fonts (code39) for use with OS X? I'm currently using the freeware one by "Paul Andre LeBlanc". It is limited in aspect-ratio adjustment. I am using the "Elfring" fonts on a Win2k computer, however they do not have a Mac version. Thank you. Garry

Hi. I have been looking for a barcode solution for some time now and had no luck. Then I started looking for help on this matter. In one FM Inc. tech article (no. 101309) says: "Neither FileMaker Pro for the Macintosh nor FileMaker Pro for Windows can access bar code scanners that enter data through the serial port on the computer." Is there then no way to plug in a barcode scanner into the serial port and have the code "read" by FMPro? Is there someone who can enlighten me on this matter and how these things are done? Thanks, Reynir.

I have tried to setup a good barcode scanning system with Filemaker but it does not seem to work well. What I am trying to do is setup a retail check out station system like at a grocery store. I want the cashier to scan barcoded items in quickly without any keyboard interaction between each item. Right now when a barcode is scanned the stock number is read into the field but the cursor just sits in the same field and does not move to the next line item in my portal. The only way to get the cursor to move is to hit the TAB key on the keyboard. This slows down the check out process majorly if 100 items are being scanned. Is this possible with Filemaker? Thanks

I have set up a Unitech MS690 scanner with a USB connection to a G3 Macintosh and am able to scan Code39 bar codes into a FileMaker database. Now I'm trying to send a preamble to trigger a script and am having problems. I tried to set a preamble by scanning the function code the manual lists as Apple Make, then an ASCII 1, then Apple Break. I was not really sure what the Apple Make and Break were but thought they might provide the proper sequence for the Apple key. Does not seem to work. I can scan most of the other Functions for Mac out of the manual like the F keys as a preamble and they do seem to trigger fine. Wondering if anyone might have some advice on this.…

I used trio serial plug in (we have serial Symbol LS1004 scanners) with Filemaker. Now I would like to see if anyone knows of a serial interface using Filemaker mobile??? I want to scan bar codes (3 of 9) into Filemaker. Any more ideas to get a serial scanner to work with Filemaker mobile? RAD DAD

Hi! My first ever forum question anywhere! I run a members club for kids and am using filemaker pro to list the members info. What started as a hobby looking after 100 kids has now grown into someting I can't control (2000 members) The kids have membership cards (currently produced in Illustrator) but I'd like to produce cards with a magnetic strip so I can record their visits to the club and check their membership status etc. Also I'd like to just hit print from Filemaker and have the card produced. I'm totally new to all of this so any help on how to build such a system from scratch would be very VERY much appreciated. I know I need a card reader and printer bu…

I am looking for a solution to a scanning problem. After scanning an integer I would like for the program to advance to the same field in the next record in table view. I am aware that some scanners can be programmed with the Ctrl&Down Arrow function, but many scanners do not have this capability. Is there another keystroke function, script, or other FileMaker capability to force an advancement to the next record after receiving input?

Ok it's a few months down the road, however I know it's comming!! I'm as new as you can get when it comes to FM, and don't know much more when it comes to bar coding. What I think I'll want is something like I see people in stores using for inventory, where they can scan and type in the amount. I might be blond, but the users of this system, arn't the "brighest bulbs glowing" if you know what I mean. ;-) Its going to have to be easy to use!! If any one can point me to some good reading (books), websites, and companies that carry hardware, it would help. As I see it, when a project is taken on someone is going to bust their rear. It will be the person who sets it u…

I am some real crossroads here. I have written an order entry system that generates PO's automatically and now need to incorporate EDI and ASN's into the system without reentering every order (we are currently using an EDI service bureau and I have someone rekeying everything into FM and then back into the EDI system to invoice and produce ASN's) ADVICE PLEASE? I had this happen just the other day. I've used code 39 fonts with previous version of FM without a problem. I know that the barcode previews fine, but prints incorrectly (by comparing the two patterns). At this point I'm not sure if it is a printer driver problem or something with the particular font package. I do know that barcode fonts like to be used at their native size. An 18pt barcode font CAN be scaled to 12 point say, but you must always test to make sure it reads. This may be obvious, but text to be printed in a code 39 font must have a "*" appended to each end (i.e. dog becomes *dog*) to be accepted by the scanner. -bd

Hello, I have a dilemma which I hope I can get some feedback on from you all. I run a growing manufacturing business and I am beginning to run into problems with inventory control, more specifically, doing a physical count at the end of each month to post to the books. We are using Macs along with FM Pro 5. What I am trying to accomplish is to develop a system which will help me track raw material inventories. This would both help me manage purchasing, as well as month end inventory. I need to know if a bar code system would be able to track my inventory in real time. Is it possible to enter an item and then a beginning weight, then track deductions from the ori…

Greetings. New to FM Forums, but not new to Filemaker. I'm the director of an overseas development project and would like to investigate the possibilities of labelling my equipment with barcodes and be able to take inventory of this equipment regularly. Are there any (fairly) easy and cheap solutions for using palm pilots or some such and a barcode wand to do this? In very simple terms I would want to print out barcodes for everything. Then a clerk could go around with a barcode reader, swipe the code and pull up a limited set of info on the item: name, short description, last location, last condition, last time inspected, etc. Said clerk could then make modificati…

Hello, I'm sure I am not the first one to ask this question, but have been unable to get a good answer. I need to know if it is possible to insert barcode fonts into a Filemaker Pro 5.0 layout. I assume that this would have to be a third party solution of some kind. This is for a manufacturing solution where multiple records are produced from a portal and use the auto enter funtion to create an identification number field that is unique and can be used to track that record. I would like the barcode to be used to enter the tracking number in the find mode as opposed to using the keyboard. I hope this makes some sense. Please let me know if anyone has any ideas. Th…

I'm a newbie to these forums, and I'm not sure if this is the best place to post this question, but here goes. I'm looking to develop a FileMaker solution, where a user can slide a card (in this case a Driver's License) with a magnetic strip, through a card reader, and have the data automatically fill in the proper fields in an FM database. I've built tons of FMP databases, but I've never connected a card reader to a Mac or a Windows machine. Anyone have any idea as to what's involved? I'm hoping this does not involve third party software to receive the data, then export/import using a script. I wish to keep this as simple as possible. I'm just not sure how the data come…

I have a FileMaker solution which uses bar codes. Everything seems to work fine within the database itself, but when the codes are printed, space appears between each character of the bar code, making the scanner not scan the code correctly. It isn't FileMaker specific, since I copied and pasted the bar code into a SimpleText document and the same thing happened. The spaces don't appear in SimpleText or in Preview mode in FileMaker. They are printing to an HP LaserJet 8000 series printer using Desktop Printing on a Mac via TCP/IP. I tried printing via AppleTalk instead, but to no avail. Any ideas? Thanks, Chuck

Problem: Attempting to insert a jpg image from a digital camera into a container field; procedure works OK on three out of four machines (all Win2K)--on fourth machine, insertion results in being able to view just a fraction of the image; FM Tech Support suggests problem may be FM5-video driver conflict on problem machine. Anybody else seen/resolved this? This question has been moved to the FileMaker 5 Forum. Post responses in that forum. -bd [This message has been edited by LiveOak (edited October 25, 2000).]
