FileMaker Legacy fp3 and fp5

I have heard that filemaker now has a SQL backend version available. Is this true, and if so can someone give me a url for more info?

Hi guys, Does anyone (this is probably best answered by a UK person) have any troubles accessing Filemaker via the Internet? Using my client at home I can access databases over the net that are hosted at my work, but I cannot access ones which are hosted on my webserver hosted privately elsewhere. Yet a machine on the same LAN as the web server can see and access them OK. All I get in the hosts window is an empty box The webserver is hosted on a BT ADSL line, does BT block ports 5003 etc?

Hello there. I am wanting to set up Filemaker on Macs and PCs to dial out of the database to a ISDN telephone. This worked while we had version 4.0 and 4.1, but doesn't seem to anymore. We are using a Keyspan USB-> Serial adapter that plugs into a serial socket on the telephone. Anone in a similar situation? Cheers in advance! Kieran

Under Windows 95, I have installed FileMaker 5.5 for the first time. At launch, it scans the fonts and hangs. I have tried removing the trouble fonts, deleting the fmf file and re-launching, but have essentially gotten to the point where the remaining fonts are system fonts. Is there any way to turn off the scan or some better explanation and solution to this problem? If the fonts are indeed corrupt, is there any to reinstall them selectively, that is, without having to reinstall all of W95?

We have a very small office (under 10 people), and have been using FMP as long as I can remember. We recently upgraded to 5 (right before 5.5 was released, go figure). My database has become corrupted. When I try to open it, I get a message: The access privileges are corrupted or possibly tampered with ... Does anyone know how to unlock the database? I've tried Recovery (no luck). Thanks for your time and thoughts.

I would like to display dates in a custom format, e.g., "05-Mar-2001". Using the "format date" menu, I can define the format as I'd like it to display. Many of the dates were entered in the "3/5/2001" format, and they display incorrectly, e.g. a date that was entered as "1/21/1997" displays as 01-Jan-1997 instead of "21-Jan-1997." In my customer file I have over 5000 customers with the standard information such as; Name, Address, Phone, Fax, etc… In my Invoice file I have all the customer orders (using a “Line Items” file). What I want to be able to do in my customer file is “Find all Customers” who did not buy a specific item. Such as: 1. Find all Customers in the state of… IL, IN, OK, TX & CO and 2. I am exporting records using a calculation field where I have used Quark tags to format the text. This will be flowed into a Quark template. My problem is with the TAG for setting tabs. My data contains Names, addresses and phone numbers of members of a church. I want a tab for setting the zip code and phone in the following format: 64628........(660) 555-1234 The express tag that I am using is: <*t(123,2,"."). My column for my text is 123 points wide, right aligned and I want dots for my fill dot leaders. What is the best way to set up this TAG in FM so that when I export, it will work? I've played with the trial version of 5.5. and I have one important question. I saw that one of the primary claims to fame for the new version was the ability to have resizable and positionable message windows when the Show Message script step is used. When I used the Trail version I found that when I, as the developer, entered a 6 line message for example, when the user got the message it still defaulted to the old/stupid 4 line message window. Whats worse was there was NO notification that there was more text that was not being displayed. I have a file that is going to be used to generate custom and standard letters. If the user wants a custom letter they simply select the letter field and type the letter. If they want a standard letter I have a drop menu that they choose the standard letter they want. It will then via a script copy the contents of a global text field which contains the Formatted letter and pastes it into the letter field. The problem I am having is that in the global field I have everything formatted the way I need it, but when it pastes the letter it loses the alignment formating that I have setup. When performing development tasks on our software in multi-user mode (ie.. hosted from another copy of Filemaker, not server), I often (8 times out of 10) have Filemaker on the hosting computer crash saying: "FileMaker Pro cannot read the disk." or some such. This only seemes to happen when replaces or other data manipulation is initiated on the hosting computer and only when another user is logged into the machine, using the files. It NEVER happens when only one computer is using the files. Because we host all our software on Server for customer installations this doesn't affect us too much, but many consistancy checks sometimes fail and files are messed up, so other…

Hi all, I'm pretty new with this software so bare with me. I have a client running FM5 and when he tries to leave the program it says there is 1 user connected the database I guess. Is there any way to disconnect this user or change a setting somewhere on either of these computers so that the user does not have to wait to close the FM program?? Thanx in advance Kenny

How do you access the "complete" install option with FM 5. It does not appear during the normal install process. Only typical, minimum, custom. I have seen it mentioned as the solution to ODBC install errors but no one has included instructions on how to do it? Thanks.

I remember one time reading that there is a problem running FM Pro 5 on NT Workstation 4.0 running service pack 3. It would corrupt the OS. Is this true? I have 40 NT Workstation 4.0 machines with this setup that require service pack 3 in order to co-exist with the third party software they are running. Upgrading service packs is not an option. I need to make sure before I go installing FM.

I have noticed that when some of my databases are opened, they occasionally begin a sort process, keyword occasionally. While there may be a script causing this, I wondered if this might be a standard thing for FileMaker when a particular threshold is tripped. The databases I use were inherited and I am not a FileMaker expert, so I will dig deeper in an attempt to locate a custom sorting script that is being triggered, but if anyone can save me time by letting me know if this is normal behaviour for FM, I would appreciate it.

We just got a new pc in the office, and were using filemaker pro 3. I wanted to set up the new pc as the server because its a lot faster (800mhz duron) than the previous (120mhz pentium). Unfortunately we could not locate the filemaker pro 3 install cd. I tried just copying the files and running it, and it seemed to open the files as multi-user and work fine, until i tried connecting a client computer to it, it would not find a host for the files on the network. So i thought it must be because the program was copied and not installed, maybe it puts stuff in the system folder that i missed. I am wondering if the FMP5.5 upgrade price buys me the ability to resize the "Edit Relationship" window so I can see all of fields with long titles? Similarly, will the "Specify Field" window in the Scriptmaker allow resizing so I can see the rightmost part of a long field name? Finally, does anyone know if FMP5.5 will remember to maximize the "Script Definition" window, so I don't have to resize it every time I use it?

I am working on a work-loading, scheduling report from my publishing production database. There are a number of projects on the go, each with many tasks (copy editing, proofreading, collating, checking etc). I want to create a report which shows the tasks to be done in any one week on all live projects, but which only shows those fields where the task date is current not all the other task dates for that project. I can do the find request to find all those tasks with the current dates, but this then shows all the other dates. Is there a way of making the display criteria only show the current task (a different one for each project, sometimes more than one). Or am I approa…

Is there such a thing for FileMaker 5.0? A runtime version is a cheaper or free version of Filemaker 5.0 which allows the user to use the database but will not allow them to modify the code. Some databases have this option. Does Filemaker 5.0 have this? Just curious..... Thanks

Has anyone been able to successfully serve CSS FMP pages over SSL to Netscape browsers (both Mac & Win9x). I know that Netscape was a little late to the CSS game, but it seems to only happen when both a SSL connection is in place, and the page being served is coming from a dynamic FMP page that the WSC is serving via Apache (mod_ssl). I'm OK on things like design and scripting but what I REALLY need is a good explanation of how relationships work and I'd like to know what things need to be considered when planning a database. I have played with a FM4 demo and to be honest I got a bit stuck! I made a working database (albeit very simple!) but I'm eager to learn the PROPER ways of doing things before I do anything irrational!!! I have two files [CONTACTS] and [NEW DATA]. Both files contain the same fields. What I want to do is import the information from the [NEW DATA] file into the [CONTACTS]file and delete any duplications by phone number. I realize that data cannot be entered into a calc field, however this is what I would like to do. I would like the ability to override the results of the calculation. i.e. if the calc field displays $1.25 (as the result of the calculation)I would like to be able to override this figure and enter my own figure of $1.40. We are using FM4 for our real estate office. Vaghan has provided some useful information previously. Now have another problem. The DB has been going for about 4 years now and undergone many changes and enhancements (and several crashes and recoveries). We were having constant crashes associated with large DB with photos. Following Caughan's advice we are running the DB on a fast machine, using opener files on the other PC's, have the photos in a separate DB (now 800mb) and it works fine and we have had no recent crashes except--- As the db is old it has a lot of unused fields, test fields etc. I want to clean it up and delete these unused fields but when ever …

I have a set of records with a birthdate field in each. I would like to sort on the birthdate so as to look for birthdays in a given week. The birthdate sorts by year as well as date so that I have to look through all the years. If I do a calculation to strip off the year, then the new fields with only month and day don't sort correctly. (1/10 comes before 1/2 and 10/1 comes before 2/1) Any ideas.

A client has a file with just under 6,000 records. This file is listed at 1.84GB (that's right, gigabytes!). They did a "save as compressed copy", and the compressed copy was also 1.84GB. They're on a Compaq running Win98 and using FMPv4. I realize that there are a goodly number of fields, but the file size is ridiculous ... isn't it?

A client has a Toshiba laptop. When attempting to back up to Zip disks, she discovered that she couldn't just copy files to the root of the Zip, but had to place them in folders. So she placed a bunch of linked JPEG files in folders, backed them up, then restored them to their original location. Now, in the FMP5 database, the links to these pix have gotten screwy. A link that used to be to, say, "ryane.jpg" now brings up "ryans.jpg". No change was made in the FMP file, and the pix are all exactly where they used to be. Huh?

Hello everyone, Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions on how to manage serial numbers in a multiuser environment? Specifically, we have purchased 2 x 10-user licences (VLA) and therefore have 2 serial numbers. We have installed most of these licences already and are about to purchase more. The problem is that we lost track of who is using which serial number so when we install a new copy, the user sometimes gets the "maximum number of licences are in use" message. I am in charge of about 10 computers ranging from 7100s to G4s. All have an OS of atleast 9.0. Recently some of the computers have been reformatted with 9.1. We also use Adobe Type Manager Deluxe. The main database is on a remote server and each workstation connects to it. (We're in the process of finishing up a FMP Server). The file is displayed properly on the older macs however the fonts included do not register when on a mac with the new 9.1 OS. It defaults to Helvetica. Hi there, I have been working on a database where I removed the Status Area and instead of the conventional "record-browser" implemented my own navigation - so far four buttons doing "First Record", "Previous Record", "Next Record" and "Last Record. Piece of cake. Now I would like to add the following text information: Record Number, Total (found) Records and Total Records. Example: a) Browsing my records. I work in higher ed., and Filemaker is very popular with faculty. Lately we've been hosting more and more FileMaker solutions on the web with Unlimited. Unfortunately, we're running up against the 50 file limit. I'm wondering if it's possible to run multiple instances of Unlimited on the same (NT) machine. I have no problem shelling out for more licences, but I really don't want to buy another box, as the current one is mostly idle... although we have 50 files running, none of them are serving very high-traffic websites. I've been patient, but haven't had any responses to my post in another section. My qestion is with Citrix and FMP5.0 It appears that you coudl use a regular copy of FMP5 and publish it over citrix. Then have multiple people access the files. I tried it with two uses and it seemed to work fine. Is this too simple? Or am I gonna run into lots of problems not leting one copy of FMP act as the host and all the others connecting via TCP/IP as guests? I'm not familiar with Citrix, so any info would be great.

The win2k server host a FMP5 database, a user (guest) is experiencing FileMakerPro5 showing a message that say he is disconnected from the host. This message appear once a day, and he need to restart the FM everytime he see this message, why?

I can't figure out how to put Spanish accents on words in filemaker. I've tried everything I can think of but I'm getting a bad feeling that filemaker doesn't do accents. Is this the case? Can anyone help? Thanks.

I maintain the FileMaker Pro database for the advertising company that I work for. I am the only person using the database, so it is only set up on my machine. I don't know a lot about computer networks, but I need to have a few other people accessing the same database. What do we physically need for this?

I've set up the "##" in my report header, to show the page number. When I enter Preview mode, this works just fine. However, when I print my report, it starts on page 0 instead of page 1. I am thoroughly stumped. Paul

Hi Vaughn previously helped with FM4 problem crashing with photos. Following his advise now works fine and have photo database ~600mb. (We use fm to operate real estate office using it to record listings, print wndow cards etc - works well) We have home pages (www.cynthiadykerealty.com.au) hosted by our local real estate institute where we have pages for virtually all our properties. To add/amend/delete date we print out a fact sheet on the property from fm, fax it to them and e-mail the photo or photos. Would like to do this directly from fm using e-mail function. If you want people to not be able to edit a field but able to enter the field to copy information or perform a find, then a calculation field is the best option I know of. If the fields will be searched on, you might as well set them to be indexed when you define the fields so that the first time a user attempts to search on them they don't have to wait for them to be indexed. Since I Began using 5.5 from 5 I get the message that I must have an internet connection to run the program when I launch. It is an annoyance as all I have to do is close the box and move on, but it is an annoyance. Any ideas?

I have FM 5.5 on my Titanium G4 using OS X. Two things that don't work as far as I can tell is as follows. 1- If I copy a field calculation in the define fields area in order to paste it a new field I made, it won't paste. But if I go into a layout in browse mode and copy what's in a field and paste it into a different field, it works fine. I love working with FMP5 but the shimmering field outlines when one of the layout fields is entered and the blinking of layout parts (buttons, lines, fields...) as a new layout is entered looks unprofessional. I 've used Freeeze...Refresh but that just makes the whloe layout one big blink. Is there a way to get rid of these messy visual effects?

I'm running FMP5.1 on WinNT. I'd like to set up FMP so that any user that logs on to a particular machine automatically uses TCP/IP and a default username for that machine. (IE User does not have to set network protocol or username on first use of FMP). Is there a way to set this up? Thanks!

Therefore, I'd like to start sending customized emails, or "form emails." My problem is, how do I create a field that contains <<merge field>> dynamic content? i for one was pretty excited when i saw the announcement for 5.5 and i can't believe how quiet everyone is being here. can anyone shed more light on the developer features? i have yet to play with a copy but the thoughts of record level security, get field, and a script debugger are making me nearly salivate. is it that FM is finally giving us developers something to play with? so what's the silence? post your thoughts on 5.5 here and try to focus on the functionality and not the upgrade price if you can. i'll try to get a demo and check it out soon but i am swamped with dev in 5.0 and don't want to tempt fate with a 5.5 install right now. jodin

There is something occurring in my db that is puzzling. I have a text field that appears on several layouts. Simple text field, not global. Some of these layouts print in B&W and some print in color. On the B&W layouts, when I change the Text in this field to B&W, the text in the same field on the color layouts changes to a different color than the original assigned color. On other color layouts, this text changes to Lt Grey. If I then go to a color layout and change the text to its original assigned color, it appears in the correct color on the all color layouts AND also in color on the B&W layouts. Any suggestions or work arounds??? Thanks, Gary

Hi, I was tasked to do scheduling for one of the office machines. My FMP knowledge is quite at infancy so I could really use some help here. Basically, here's how it goes... user1 logs in and sets date, start_time and end_time. (start_time: 8:30am - 12:30pm user2 : logs in with similar date but diff start and end times. (start_time: 11:00am - 3:00pm) I would like FMP to intercept this schedule and prompts user2 "Your schedule is conflicting with userN". Then a layout will popup containing the schedules for that month highlighting (red font) the schedule(s) that are conflicting. User2 hits "OK" after learning of the conflict and do rescheduling. hope you guy…

I am currently using Filemaker Pro V.4 I need to hook up a second computer in my home to share files. I don't want to upgrade to v.5 To share files I need to install another V.4 on the second machine with a seperate serial number. Can I purchase an old filemaker V. 4 from someone ?

I wonder what others think about the "new and exciting" features in FMP5.5? I for one am somewhat disappointed. The prices charged are reminiscent of a full version upgrade , rather than what looks like a maintenance fix. bidirectional ODBC ?- that should have been there in the first place retained and resizable windows? - hold me down.. script runs on loading a page? - ditto windows 2000 compatibility? - not for everyone direct send mail? - that should have really been present in the first place. etc etc Oh, and they have still retained that evil repeating field... I don't publish to the Web, bcause my workplace has >10 clients, and maybe these features …

Although I haven't played with the full version of FM 5.5. yet, I noticed an annoying bug in the trial version of both FM 5.5 for Mac OS 8-9 and OS X. Namely, some of my files open as if they were protected with a password (they are not) and I cannot access neither the layouts nor scripts. They can be opened easily in FM 5. This happens only with 2 files of my 6-file solution. Opening the files individually doesn't help and holding the option key to bring up the password dialog box doesn't do anything (obviously). I just hope that this behavior is unique to the trial version as I have already ordered the full version. By the way, is there a way to report bugs directly to…

I have Filemaker Pro 4.0v3 running of a NT 4.0 Server. The users access the database over a network. However, the Filemaker has started closing unexpectedly on the server, and seems to be doing this fairly often. What could be the cause of this? One of the databases does have quite a lot of records, but the physical file size is about 50 Mb. I'm thinking the server could be running low on resources, but not sure. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Does Filemaker Pro directly support a shift from Mac to Linux Server platform?

I am considering installing FMPro Unlimited on a Compaq Proliant 2500 server with Microsoft Small Business Server 4.0. Will I be limited to 25 simultaneous connections because of SBS or will FMPro Unlimited allow an unlimited amount of connections? I will be using FMPro to instantly publish some databases at the school where I am the network admin.

Do you know of anyone who has designed a US map into FileMaker? I need it for sales tracking. You know, the old "US map on the wall" where you stick pins into the cities where you do business. I'm installing FileMaker Pro 5 on 175 workstations and have found that a few workstations lock up the first time FileMaker Pro 5 launches. It begins to build the font menu and then locks completely somewhere near the end of the list. When I turn off some fonts it seems to launch fine. Does anyone know what the limit is on fonts? Can someone please explain how I would intergrate Unlimited into the following scenario. Our Internal DB's have all been served via FMServer, over the past few month's we have been developing an online order system which will be rolled out to selected customers only. Because of the limitations of FMPro serving to multiple users. How do I intergrate the Webside into our existing system. 1) Do you need to Run unlimited on a dedicated machine and share the mian DB's on FMServer via the HOST connection? 2) Do you run duplicates of the DB's and then create a link back for updateing? much appreciated in advance

I just started using FMP5 recently and am VERY frustrated by the fact that the relationships that are set up in this set of files keeps breaking down. This has never happened to me in FMP4 before and I can't even seem to redefine these relationships myself after the fact. It just won't do it... I have had to revert back to the original file and start my work again twice now, losing hours and hours of my precious time. Anyone experienceing these problems at all? Any advice? Please help before I go crazy... thanks

I've been using FM successfully on the Mac for several years and more recently on the PC. I've entered a master password to secure a database file with a subordinate password in place for the others and ... you guessed it ... now, I can't get back in. On attempting to access the file the prompt "ACCESS DENIED" appears BUT none of the menu items allow the entry of a password to access the file! I know the password. I've tried to access it from another password accepted file, although I'm still denied entry. It would appear therefor, that you can get to lock yourself out of your database file by default. Can anyone help?

I've selected "auto-enter modifier name" for one of my fields. When a record is modified, some user's names are entered in the field, other's computer addresses. I'd like everyone's name to appear, but don't know where Filemaker finds the Modifier's name. The database is on a network, but Filemaker isn't showing the network log-in names in the Modifier field. Comments appreciated.

I have a database that I would like to put on the web. The database contains a very friendly user interface with lots of buttons. However, when this database is brought up on the web, none of the buttons function. I pulled out my Filemaker Bible to find the answer. It says that this is a limitation. Scripts will not be activated when the database is hosted. The only button that will function is one that has "go to layout...." Is this true with Filemaker 5.0? Does Filemaker 5.5 solve this incompatibility issue? Any answers are appreciated. Thanks. Thumperman
