I've created a solution and I'm deploying it to 25 customers over the internet (25 different db)with 1 to 4 users each that can be connected at the same time. I'm looking for more speed and want to maximise hardware/software performance of my future new server, my question is: Two servers with the same configuration (same number of hosted files & same number of users),running only Filemaker server 8, one with win server 2000 SP4, the other with server 2003. Would The one with Win server 2000 SP4 be faster?

Hi all A customer has FMP 5Server running on a Mac. After a controlled shutdown due to an expected power down, Filemaker Server refuses to open FMP files. In FMserver a database is selected to open, but nothing happens. No message on error or anything else, it just ignores the open request. When we tried to open the files from a standard FMP, the files open without any problems. Any ideas? Regards /U

I'm having major performance problems with Filemaker Server 8v2 serving to both FM7 and FM8 clients, on a particular layout. The layout which this effects is relatively basic. It contains three fields, (a Record ID, and 2 text descriptions). It also contains two portals, one with 5 text fields. the other with 8 text fields. There are no calculations fields at all on the layout. When there are only one or two clients connected to the server, finds on this layout runs fine. However during the day when there are 20 or so users connected to the server, moving between records takes 20+ seconds from one to the next. The keys for the portal relationships are b…

I have just installed Filemaker Server 8 Advanced and am testing the Server External Authentication features with our existing Active Directory domain. PCs on our domain are able to log in without any problems. However, when I connect a Mac to this server it never prompts for a username/password and does not show any available databases (only accessible databases are visible). Does anyone have experience in a similar configuration that would be able to help me?

The problem in a nutshell: I can do all the finds that I want in my database when I open it locally in my FM7 Client (updated to v3, on OS X Tiger), but when I open it via FMNet on a Windows-based FM7 Server, some of the finds that worked on the client give me "no records match that set of requests." Two paragraphs of background before I describe the problem in detail. I've been developing a moderately ambitious database project to keep track of computers, who they're assigned to, the issues with them, etc. I wanted a way to keep track of the history of assignments of a computer (e.g. computer X was assigned to person A from 1/1/2000 to 8/1/2000, then then to pe…

I'm having a problem with remote users intermittently losing their connection to my FileMaker server. I'm running FileMaker 8 Server on Mac OS X connected to a business-class cable Internet connection. All of the clients are running FileMaker 8 under various operating systems. In the databases, I've disabled idle disconnections for each privilege set. On the local network, we have no trouble with users being disconnected. However, when users access the server remotely over the Internet, they experience seemingly random and intermittent disconnections. This occurs with clients both in the local region as well as those connecting from our London office. I rea…

I was reading a post which implied that some files could be stored client-side to speed things up. I assume this is with the seperation model... Could someone please describe how this would work if I made a solution with 3 files (Data, Logic, GUI)? Would a user basically be able to store Logic and GUI on their system, and then upon opening these - somehow access the data file remotely through the host? Would anything change if the host is off-site (WAN)?

My name is Jordan I'm the director of info services for a private school in Toronto. I was hoping the FM community might be able to give some feed back on a error my fileMaker 5.5 server has been giving me lately. During heavy use (teachers entering comments and grades at the same time) the server appears to crash/shut down. No one can get into it. When I log into my Xserver to see what is up the FileMaker server config app is not running. When I click the start button on the config app an error dialog pops up stating "Unable to start server Another instance of filemaker server is already running. Request command has not been executed." I have to end u…

I just ran into a problem where a Find (for all records with a null value) would find one "ghost" record (so there were N+1 records listed). The status display would show "Found: 11892, Total:11891". I recovered the file and it seem to have fixed that issue, but this it the first time this has happened, and I recently updated from FMSA7v4 to FMSA8v2. Anyone else see this problem? Is it a problem in 8v2? Seems like a deadly / nasty bug to me...

Hi all, Just installed FM 8 Server Advanced. On of the new features is the ability to easily edit the home page. We were running 7 and I had edited this page in the app package. It was an easy setup, and I was able to drop my custom page into the IWP folder. The problem is - with v8 - FM replaced the browser username / password authentication with a webpage form. After just getting off the phone with FM, I've been told that this page is not editable. It is ugly and could possibly be confusing to my users. It has a blue bar at the top that says INSTANT WEB PUBLISHING and it tells you to enter your name and password the the database "xxxxxx" and th…

I'm sure this has been talked about ad nauseum. We're in the hardware business (www.dealexpress.com) but we also use FM8 to run the company. I'm on a quad G5 but our server is an HP Blade system, dual Xeon MP 2.0 2mb. I'd like to know what the fastest server platform is, Mac or PC, and if dual (or more) processors is important. Cost is not an issue for us.

We're experiencing a problem with a FM7 application being accessed via a Citrix Metaframe XP server. When the remote user connects and views the FM7 app in Citrix, the "sort records" command is disabled, although we are certain that command is enabled in the privileges for that user. We're wondering if there is a firewall issue, as this application is set up on a network in a school environment. The user is connecting from outside the school network. When connecting via Citrix inside the school, the "sort records" is available, but outside the school network, the "sort records" is disabled. If this is a firewall issue, we're not sure what to do about it. Citrix serve…

Hi All, We have Filemaker Server 5.5 and clients that use Filemaker 6.0. There is a Filemaker file that is 430MEG. The end user claims nothing has changed for over a year and that they never had an issue until now. For the past month the end user tells me it takes them 5 minutes for this file to open. I confirmed this by trying to open the file on my laptop. Once the file is open everything is fine. I contacted Filemaker Tech Support but they don't support Filemaker Server 5.5 or Filemaker 6.0 so they were not helpful to me. Could anyone provide any suggestions I could try? Thanks so much, REM

Hello, I've seen this question posted in a number of forums and I haven't seen one solid reply or example. I realize the Filemaker Server Advanced CWP capability is new from Filemaker (as it replaces CDML for FM7+) but it has been well over a year since it has been available and I have yet to see a good working example. I also realize that Filemaker is embracing the web's future in XML. I've purchased the Filemaker Professional Series Foundation Series II documentation from Filemaker and Beginning XSLT by Jenni Tennison. I've been developing with Filemaker 5.5-6 for about 2.5 years. I am serious about making CWP publishing work for my organizat…

I'm writing a job catalogue for a graphics workgroup. It's going to run on an Xserve and be accessed by three Macs. For each of the job records, I'd like to create a folder link which will work by: 1. Click button 2. Switches to Finder, opens the relevant folder I'm happy for users to link manually to the folder when they create the record (but it's an advantage for them to do this via the GUI rather than typing, or cutting and pasting, the path). What's the best way to do what I want? Are container fields the best approach, or is there another way? Can I do it with built in FM functions, or do I need a plugin (such as the Troi file plugin)? We just installed FMP6 on one of our new Citrix servers. When clicking the "open remote", usually you see a list of our hosted files. For some reason, you don't see our FMfiles and have to click the specify host and add our FM server to the list. It's behaving differently than other client installations. How can I change the application to find our hosted files? Thanks in advance!

I work for a company and we have been traditionally using Mac hardware to host our FileMaker servers. We have hosted FileMaker 6 & 7 on various G4s & G5s. However we are now looking at purchasing FileMaker 8 . In order to cut costs we can purchase a pretty good dell poweredge for $1500 instead of an expensive Xserve. Would you say that FileMaker Server is better suited for Windows or Mac. This box will be mostly used on the internet by our clients so it will be exposed to the internet. Please only reply with good experiences, not the typical "Windows sucks" or "Mac rules" responses, I am going to use the arguments here to either agree with the decision …

I'm also weighing my options in moving my company's databases and our elaborate online registration system from FMP 6 to 8, and it makes me nervous that there seem to be few developers using FM's XML/XSLT-based CWP. It's also frustrating that there's no way to get my hands on a trial version of the Server Advanced software to try it out. Do you think there's anything poorly implemented or unreliable with the XML/XSLT approach, or is it just that Lasso and PHP-based solutions have a less steep learning curve? I am not familiar with PHP, so I am tempted to go with Lasso, but software and hosting costs might be more, and I should probably learn PHP anyway. What do …

When setting up File References, which is the best syntax to use? We have a file, call it “navigator.fp7” which opens the other files in this solution. The File References to those other files read, for example: “file:names.fp7;fmnet:/*.*/names.fp7.” Is the fmnet reference necessary? These files are to be hosted on either single user local machine, peer to peer, or FileMaker Server. Here is our problem: when using the file reference syntax “file:names.fp7;fmnet:/*.*/names.fp7,” and using FileMaker Pro 8.0.1 or 8.0.2 as a peer to peer host, or when using FileMaker Server 8.x as the host, other FileMaker Pro 8.x Macintosh clients take 15-20 minutes to open the sol…

Ok, I'm trying to set up a simple custom web form that will input its data into an existing FMP database. This used to be relatively simple, but now it seems to be escaping me. I've read the majority of documentation on the matter but seem to be running around in circles. I've got FMSA 7 setup and I'm able to use IWP. All of that is working. I converted an only FM6 cdml site using the converter tool. I just have no idea where to put the xml files within the web site heirarchy and how to call it. I see nothing referencing this in the documentation. Please help!

We have an FMP7 Server Advanced set up with the web engine and filemaker engines on seperate servers (both WIN2K) This works fine and the images in the HTML pages rendered from the XSLT. I'm working with a school district running FMP 7 desktop and server in an all OS X environment. I got this message from them asking for help, but I'm not sure where to start the troubleshooting! See below... Suggestions greatly appreciated! "About once per week, we have to have the tech department restart FMP on the server as we get the following message. "?(?)" is modifying this record. You cannot use this record until "?(?)" is finished. This happens seemingly indiscriminately and has caused some havoc here when we need to access files for meetings.

I'm wondering if Server 5.5 and 7 Advanced can reside on the same machine. We bought S7A for now, to host Cleveland Consulting's Multi-user Calendar, and it will eventually host our upgraded maintenance management system. In the meantime, our maintenance system is still in V6 hosted by Server 5.5. The server in question is a brand new server with some very beefy specs. The multi user calendar is not a huge system and would have at most 20 concurrent users over IWP. But Server 5.5 would be hosting up to 80 concurrent users.

We have some filemaker files that were created in version 3, converted to version 5, and now converted to version 7/8. They work great except for one thing: when they are opened in FMP 8 for Windows, they open minimized. This does not happen when they are opened in FMP 8 for Mac OS. Under File Options, no scripts are set to run on file open, so it's all rather puzzling. I tried creating a script to automatically restore the window on file open, but now it minimizes and then restores on file open, which is enough to make you dizzy. (These files are hosted on FileMaker Server 7, but the same thing happens when you open them locally.) Any ideas?

Does anybody know how to interpret entries in the wpc_access_log file? On W2K3, this file is located in the following path: FileMaker / FileMaker Server 7 / Web Publishing / Logs. There is another log file in that same directory called pe_application_log which is indicating that a few web publishing errors are occurring. This file just gives the FileMaker error number and a timestamp, but no further explanation. Both logs have timestamps, so it is possible to cross-reference from one log file to the other based on date and time of occurrence. I can find the corresponding entry in the wpc_access_log that tells me lots of good information, such as the account name…

Hi! I am installing FM Server Advanced and i cannot get it to work on the web. I followed the manuals and on local network everything works perfectly. But when trying to see database from the web nothing shows up. I have router properly configured with all ports open (5003, 16008-16018). FM Server and Web Console can see each other, shared databases are shown (in configuration console) and everything is on one computer so IPs are localhost. When I open the database from FMPro with Instant web publishing and configured port is ok. Thanks in advance Dejan

I would like some advice. I would like to build, for my customers, a web site displaying a catalogue of their products. Presently I use Dreamweaver and Filemaker Pro 8 and have been looking at the option of using Filemaker Server 8 Advanced (using Custom Web Publishing) as a solution for building a database driven web site. However, at over £1,600 (approx $2,500) Filemaker Server 8 Advanced is very expensive and it's not possible to get a trial version of this to see whether it suits my needs. Furthermore, I can't find an example of a web site driven by this package. I spoke to Filemaker UK today and they said www.eatpret.com was an example, but having looked at it, it's …

Good day all We recently had to reinstall FMSA 7 from scratch on a XServe G5 running OS X 10.3.9 to get the recent 7.0v4 version of FMS to run properly. We went through installing the two original CD (FMS 7 & FMSA) then proceeded with upgrades of FMS 7 up to v4. The 7.v03 version updater of FMSA was then downloaded from FM's site. When we attempt to run it, the dialog boxes appear in an asian language. At one point, a message error appears (I think...can't read corean or japanese or chinese ...) and all we can do is quit and wonder. Any suggestions to what is going on ? Thanks

I have posted earlier about why serverv5.5 will not run on Tiger, so I 've decided to try and get server v7, but was told that I'd have to upgrade all of my clients. Currently they are running on v6.x and I cannot afford to upgrade all of them. I cannot find anywhere that shows what version of Server will run versions of client. Does anyone know where I might find this, or if it is possible? Thanks, Mike

I have something where I can only use a global graphic for a navigational purpose. Everytime I restart FMP the graphic is lost. I understand that you obtain new globals after each session. How do I set a simple graphic as a global graphic when someone starts a new session?

When accessing a database hosted by FMSA 7 using a FM7 client, a dialog pops up after 15 minutes (the idle out time we set) saying that the file is about to close due to inactivity. This despite the fact that it's in use. Pressing Cancel dismisses the dialog for another 15 minutes, but it's a real pain and is alarming some less savvy users. However, for security reasons, we don't want to disable the time out. Why does FMSA think the file is idle? Is there a server setting which we're missing?

So I'm having a bit of a play and I seem to have reached an impasse. Can anyone point me in the right direction for some reading material or give me a step by step guide? I have an old computer (PC running windows XP) which has been set up to be a web server. I've installed filemaker server advanced and filemaker pro itself. Both version 7. In the process, I also had to install Internet Information Services. My question is, now what?! I've tried looking through the Filemaker folder on the C: drive but I can't see anything obvious to play with. I've read the readme, but it doesn't really say what you do next. I thought maybe if I've installed filemaker …

Can FileMaker Pro 8 (client) be installed on the same computer that is running FileMaker Server Advanced? The idea would be the client would interact with the databased hosted by the server.

I was trying to do some admin stuff on our FileMaker Server Advanced, and I wanted to access the Web Publishing Admin Console but I couldn't remember the password so I went into the FileMaker Server Admin application and thought it would be easy to delete the Web Publishing Engine and just create a new one. No luck, I can't add a new one that works. Do I need to reinstall the server?

Hi Guys, I've got a client who has a system created in FileMaker Pro 6. Im currently migrating the solution to version 8, but the main concern they have is the speed of FileMaker. At the moment, they have 3 users accessing the system, hosted by FMP6. I was thinking that during the conversion, I can sell them FMPS 8, if they see a significant improvement in performance using Server 5.5. Does anyone know where I can download a *Trial* version of FMS 5.5, or does this not exist anymore? Cheers

Does anyone have any experience running FMSA (7.0v3) on a virtual server? My company is standardizing on VMWare and will not authorize dedicated machines as servers. I've got a fairly small solution (3.5MB/3000 records/7 users) and I'm wondering if there is anything out of the ordinary I should expect.

We're using FM7 Server Advanced to host a database to be accessed mainly via IWP (with some FM clients too). The database has scripts which check the client version and jump to client-specific or IWP-specific layouts and scripts accordingly. Today, we ran a session to test it for the first time under load. Our server - an Intel Xeon 3.2GHz with 1GB RAM (which isn't running enything else) - crashed several times when under load. The number of concurrent IWP users varied from around 10 - 50, all accessing from our corporate LAN. The server logs indicate issues with some of my scripts (all web compatible) and the CPU load was at 100% for much of the time. My und…

I'm trying to setup some simple XSLT stylesheets using the FileMaker Server Advanced Site Assistant and have run aground on the first step. I'm able to connect to the database I want but when I'm asked to Select site features, there aren't any layouts showing up in the drop-down lists. I've checked permissions on the layouts, etc. and everything seems to be in order (at least as I understand it). I can go ahead and create the style sheets without selecting layouts, but get errors when I try and run them. Has anyone else run into this problem? The sheets are pretty simple, one with a single field for a search, the other to show 5 fields allowing the user to edit th…

Everytime I go into layout mode and make a change or go into Define Databases, and then when I go back to browse mode or click OK, FileMaker freezes and won't move on. I've had to force quit a bunch of times already. The changes end up being saved, but it just stops there and gives me the working icon.

I just installed the FM Server on our system and it went pretty well as it usually does. But after the install and launcing FM Server 8 our files did not host despite being in the correct file directory. Out company's engineering dept then came to a stand still. A call to tech support found the following problem: While in the Admin control panel none of our files to hosted showed up under either the FOLDER or FILES selection We then went to FM Server 8 Admin panel, and clicked on the properties of the FM server. Under the DEFAULT FOLDER Tab, there are a few selections. The first one is the default folder directory. For some reason it still had the File…

I'm using Server 7 on my Mac OS X at work and are having a problem. Up until now all of the files I add to the server work fine from remote computers. However, I just put a file on the server that simply will not appear to users on remote computers. The permissions are set properly and it has been opened using the server tools. Nothing is different, from what I can tell, from this database to the many others on the server. Any ideas?

I recently showed a small company a small FMP 7.0 solution of mine and now they want both FMP and my solution... Unfortunately I'm on a Mac OS 10.3.9 (single user) and they're on a (small) multiple-user Windows network... 1) Do they need to get, say, FMPro 1-5 user license. 2) Should they then get FM Server too? With regards to my solution, would anybody expect major problems between my Mac solution and their Windows network? All help and advice will be gratefully received. Tim

We have about 50 databases hosted on Filemaker Server. I would like to allow someone outside of our group to access one of them, and only allow him access to view that one database, not all the others. I know i can password protect the others, but is it possible so that he does not even see them? Or can i create another connection to the server that just hosts that one file?

Hello. My colleague is running Filemaker Server 7 on an Xserve, and is having trouble getting it to backup with Server's Scheduler to an external drive. For example, look at the screenshot linked below: http://dave.typepad.com/server_screenshot.gif Each Friday, we want to backup all databases to a folder named "Friday" on an external Firewire drive that connected to the Xserve (and so on with every day of the week). How do we specify the correct path in the "Back up Folder" field? Thanks. It's been bothering us for a while.

I am not sure if this is the right place to post this question. I am working on a solution that will have several users connecting to it from different time zones. I am wondering what will happen when dates and times are entered in to the database. Will they reflect the current users location or will they be normalized to one time zone where the server is? If they are local zone based how will that look to the users when records have dates in the future? Or when users create records at about the same time but the times are grossly different. How would I sort records by date or time if they are scattered across all time zones? Could someone give me…

We are running Filemaker Server 7 and publishing a dB to the web using custom web publishing and XSLT style sheets made using site assist. There are about 950 records in our database. When I "Show all records" (max=25) and begin navigating through the list hitting the next button, I always get an error about 10-11 pages through the list. The errors on the page and in the logs read: XSLT-CWP: An unexpected error has occurred (null) File: /fmi/xml/fmresultset.xml The line and column fields are blank. Any suggestions? I am leaning towards a timeout of the results list, but can find no place to configure this. Thanks in advance.

Here's my setup: Filemaker Server Advanced 7.0v3 running on a dedicated machine with static internal IP address (192.168.x.x). Web server & FileMaker Web Publishing 7.0v3 engine running on Xserve with Panther 10.3.9. All is well with the database solution. Ten+ Filemaker clients connecting fine both internally and externally via FileMaker. We need to post some info via web for clients so I set up the FMServer on one machine and the web publishing engine and FM web server on our Xserve which already has our regular website on it. I can get to the admin console www.mydomain.com/fmi/config. It always says the publishing engine is not responding. They are on the sam…

Ladies and Gents: I have been browsing thru several topics about the grueling process of FMSA7 intallation. I am running w2k, basic authorization under iis with wpe on one computer and fms7 on another. I had a problem with some databases not showing up under the "published databases" screen, so I added the fmsadmin extended privilege to enable it to do so...hopefully. However, when I did this, my FM Server wasn't recognized in wpe... and hasn't been recognized since--even after a reinstall of fmsa7. Do I really need to reinstall fms7 on the other machine? It's running great and hosting my databases without a hitch? This program is really a pain to install. I…

I'm using FM server 7. I have a table that has 25,000 records in it, and I need to make related records in a join table. The two tables are related by a two-field match (ID and Date). I've come up with several ways to do it, but none of them work well, and I'm looking for hints on how to do it better. For purposes of discussion, assume the two tables are named "A" and "B". Also, table A has a many to one relationship with table B (i.e. multiple records in A for the same ID/Date combo), but I only want a single related record in table B. Method 1: Looping set field. Find all records in A with a child in B. Omit these, leaving only those w/o childr…

I am looking into purchasing FileMaker for my company. It sounds like a great tool that would give us the flexibility to choose client/server types of deployments or web deployments. I am interested in your view points on what the best FileMaker software configurations would be for our situation. We are a small sized business that is hoping to grow substantially, so our budget is large enough for Server Advanced if required. Here's our situation: - We currently have 10 people who would need to access the final database. All 10 could potentially be concurrent. We are hoping to double this number over the next year and continue to grow from there. - We ha…

Can you run scripts on FileMaker Server 5.5? This may sound bit odd, but here's why I'm asking: I have a plug-in (Troi Activator: phenomenal!) that allows you to schedule things to take place (i.e. running scripts, backups, etc.). I have programmed my databases so that it'll do certain functions on a preset schedule, but these scripts have to take place on the server. Is this possible?

I have a school that is upgrading there current FileMaker 5.5 system to 8. In the meantime, they want to have remote access to the 5.5 system until the new server with remote access is put in place. I installed FMP Server Config 5.5 on their OS 10.2.8 Server. We are able to see the files on campus, but cannot see them off campus. They do not have any firewall blocking this (they think), and the firewall hardware people say that port 80 is open by default. Is there an old thread about setting this up, or are there certain things I can look for to see if their settings are correct? I am assuming that FMP server uses a TCP port, and that I can turn on the Dir…

First of all, I was hired to my job to do the website. Somehow they got me doing building their new database and maintaining the old one along with all their other tech support/printer crap and the rest. Funny thing is they actually ended hiring someone else to do the website when I didn't have enough time because of everything else. Anyways, I've been getting decent with fm7 but I don't know a thing about the servers and such. Onto the problem: The old database is filemaker 5 running on filemaker server 5 ( I think-I'm writing this from home) on a mac. Today, when the customer service reps downstairs tried going to a related file, filemaker really starts to wei…

Hi, I Think that Filemaker server 7 can process some calculations or script steps on the server machine to have faster, less networking bound, performance. Am-I correct, or it just limited to plug-ins ? Is there a list of the script steps and the calculation that can be processed on the server machine rather on the client ? Such a list would be a boon to optimize development. Is there a particular setting to enable this server side processing ? Since I don't use third-party plug-ins, is there a regular one (one shiping with fmp), that we should put on the server ? I'm thinking about the web companion (taht existed in 6), I use one of its …

Hey all, I've been searching all day on this site, through fm documentation, and on filemaker's web site. Basically, I've installed 7 Advanced and updated to v3 for the server as well as the IWP. The FM Server, Web Server, IWP Stuff and anything else is all installed on the same computer. I 'registered' the Web Publishing Engine in the server Admin panel by adding a new Identifier and passcode. However, when I add this identifier, no URL shows up in the 'Web Admin Console' field. Of course, trying to access the Console either through the ip: http://192.168.1231231etc/fmi/config or through localhost: http://localhost/fmi/config quickly te…

I need to execute a timed script so I'm doing the method that was recommended in this forum. Here goes. I'm trying to have FMS Advanced schedule a task that runs an applescript that opens a database in the client that runs a startup script. That startup script performs a script in the client. The problem is the applescript never gets executed. I run the applescript manually and it works, but it won't run through the Task Scheduler in FMS. The log says it ran the scheduled task. Is anyone else having trouble running scripts? I've tried to save the script as an app, script.
