I'm serving my files with FMS on MacOS 9 on an old beige g3 333mghz If I turn Appletalk off (best practices) how can I move backup files to other machines? Currently I have appletalk on and I control the server with apple remote desktop. I use filesharing just to make copies of backup files over the net. Everything works fine (since 1 year). Do you think I'm going to have troubles in the future?? Paolo

Hi guys, I'm totally new to this form. I have a very disturbing and ongoing problem. Beofre I start going in to the details I want to give you guys some info. We use FM in our company as our main Data Base. We have over 200 users but not all of them logged in to filemaker at once. Usually we have 160-180 users in the system. We run FM Server 5.5 on Windows 2000 Server. The PC that we are using is a Compaq Proliant with dual Zeon Processor 2.8, 1gb of ram and a raid system and it's a dedicated server with no additional server service running on it. Last 1.5 years we had to move the FM database to differnt computers 3 times and even to a different OS playforms because o…

Hi a newbie post here! Ok, so i've figured out how to host a db locally and display it on the intranet. But how do i do it via the server? I am running Filemaker Pro 6 Unlimited, and Filemaker Server 5.5. I have turned on the web companion component on the db itself and hosted it on the server. I THOUGHT i'd found the ip address but nothing happened... but then I've probably just stuffed up the whole process because i am a newbie..

I am trying to backup my dbs which reside on my FM Server. The server is running XP Pro and runs fine apart from trying to execute an external backup (volume on sunserver). I have specified the path within the scheduled backup to a networked volume on my sunserver solaris running helios ethershare. when executed i get an error stating the path could not be found even though i have specified this within the backup schedule. can anyone shed any light on this please? thanks in advance.

Alright. I knew I should have come here first. Received bad advice from another forum. Anyway, I have a home network with three computers networked together. They are all running XP Pro. My main computer has Filemaker Server 5.5. installed. I have developed a program in Filemaker pro I want to test since I will be using it on our network at school. First I have to work all the bugs out so I can talk them into letting me do it. Here are my questions: 1. Can I reside the Filemaker program I developed on my main computer were the server is? Will it act as a server coniciding with XP Pro? 2. Then can I get on another computer in my house and use the program so …

1. has anyone tried the speed of fm server in a condition of 75 connected user with a solution of 120 tables?. Under this condition is the the amount of memory ram a significant effect? 500 Mb or 1024 Mb?, Is hiperthreading intel processor similar or significantly slower in speed than xeon in terms of fm functionality?. Is opteron or itanium processor a important jump in speed in terms of FM server functionality? I know the speed of the network, the speed of the hard disk and the speed of both side (client and server) are important elements in the whole context. However I am trying to balance the important of every element in a large network with 75 users and up. Has a…

Hello All: First off, I know my FM Server, so it isn't something obviously stupid, like having AppleTalk turned on or something like that. Now, the problem: I've got a client with an FM Server system, which I set up, and which has run fine since installation about six months ago. Suddenly it is doing something I've never seen before. After a panicked call from the owner I went in today, and every single client machine was showing the squiggly line for a cursor - you know, the one that means it is communicating with the host, like it shows when first loading a database. Every machine was completely locked up. FMServer showed some wierd info: Out of 15 guests, onl…

I need a little seasoned advice. I'm in the process of setting up a network system for a doctors office. The office will only be networking 8 PC computers (all new) to start--but may grow to 10 or 15 computers. What is the down side to running Filemaker Server and a File Server on the same machine. Is it only a speed concern? Is the data safe running in such a configuration (even if it is slow)? With only 8-15 computers I'm wondering if two machine servers (database server, file server)are necessary. What are the risks of starting with both the databases and Files served from the same machine. Is there an increased data corruption potential? (If it is too slow…

Hi, I've developed an imagebank for a large client of ours, and it runs fine (local). Now I've made a new solution thats wired to the imagebank so they can check for imagestatus while the enter data. Still works good but now they are moving to another location (outside our own building) so sharing the databases will not be possible anymore using our own LAN. What is the best way to let them connect to the image-database only? The booking solution they take with them is - as stated before - wired to the imagebank, which we host on fm-server (both local and online). Can i set fm to look for a hostfile on a specific IP (and specific name for the DB) without userinte…

Hi all: If you look at the posts from Chopper, Lucky and myself (stanley) from the past two weeks, you'll see that there has suddenly been a spate of problems with FM Server on networks where at least one user is running Jaguar and the server is running an earlier Mac OS (either 8.6 or 9). I was wondering if anyone else has noticed erratic behavior of this sort with a similar setup, and if anyone had any thoughts or knowledge regarding Jaguar perhaps doing something strange on a TCP/IP network, which might cause some kind of interference. Of course, I may be drawing a false conclusion from those three posts, but I've been having a major problem with one client (…

Does anyone know why I am losing connection with my FM server v5.5 ? I have 20 macs on a Ethernet network connecting to a G3 (beige) FM Server 5.5 OS9 hosting 15-20 databases. The other macs connecting to the server range from OS 9 - 10.3.1. The problem I have is that after about 20mins using 10.3.1 it loses conection and gives me a error message of " Communication with the host was interupted and could not be re-established. (-3284)" I connect to FM Server in 10.3.1 by selecting File - Open Remote and selecting DB. The problem happpens to three computers here all running 10.3.1. I did not have this problem in 10.2.8. Any ideas??

I've installed FM server and have transferred my working files to the server's directory however I'm being given the following error when attempting to access any of the DB files via a browser "HTTP Error 405 - Method not allowed!". I've also noticed that, unlike FM Pro, the server version doesnt appear to automatically recognise the file type FP5 and rather than associate this with the file type "FileMaker Pro Database" it leaves it as an unknown file type i.e. with the generic windows icon and I suspect that this is the underlying problem. Im using FM Pro 6, FM Server 5.5 and Windows NT Server. Any advice on how to go about rectifying this would be much appr…

Regarding my previous question, things did not work out well with my attempt to install Windows NT 4.0 on the computer I wanted to use as a server, so I foolishly sold my copy of Filmaker Server NT on Ebay. Now I have a friend who is upgrading her company's network, and she has volunteered the donation of a fairly recent server as a charitable donation. It will come with Windows NT 6.something installed. Meanwhile, The Wellness Community has decided that they want a a file server for all of their files (mostly Word & Excel and all the FMP files). Here's the question: Do I have to have a copy of FM Server NT (which is proving difficult to find on E…

Hello All, I have a solution running on one FM server which is now getting pretty slow. I already got a second server and yesterday I moved half the files to the second server. The problem that I'm getting is that the files do not seem to find the new locations. When I had one server and I would move the files to a new directory the first time I would open them up it would ask me for the location of the file. It would then browse around find the new location and open the file. From then on the files would find each other fine. Now with the 2nd server, when I open the files they would ask me for the location of the files on the 2nd server. Again I would b…

A small private school is running one of my programs over their windows network. The network is old; all of the programs, mine included, run slow and sometimes not at all. They have budgeted to upgrade their servers and other necessary equipment. I suggested to them that they include an Apple computer (serever) that would be dedicated to my program. However, he knows little about Macs and I know less about networks. My questions are: 1. Can you run PC and Apple servers through the same hub and over the same connections? 2. (FMP5 server on NT) When a user forgets their password to a file, I can't simply find their name and reset their password, because all we see under Permissions is the password (which they can't remember). So, I create a new password for the user, and the list of defunct accounts grows by one. Has anyone found a semi-secure way to handle this?

I have a large database with about 13,000 images. Each image is linked to, and not embedded into a record. These images do not display if the database is served via FM Server. They show up fine if the database is opened using regular FM, or on the web if served with FM Unlimited. Does anybody know why and if there is a solution to this problem?

I am wondering if anyone can point me to a white paper or something similar that lays out all the various aspects of FM that change when a file is being served? I currently know of two: 1. Global fields are no longer truly "global" when a file moves to a server. These fields now become different for each user. 2. Export paths can get confused. I export small text files for use in our DOS network. I have recently learned the hard way that if I set up a new export script directly in a file being served, then the path of that script becomes variable depending on the user. I had to pull a copy off the server, open it locally, rememorize the path, then reinsta…

I must admit up front I have been programming in FM for 8 years but only recently have my customers forced me into the world of Servers! After reading most of the posts in the Server Performance Statistics thread, I am hopelessly confused. I have a customer using FMP Server 5.5 and Citrix with over 300 users. I'm wondering if somebody has ever tried running multiple instances of Filemaker server on one machine, a bit like running several web sites on one machine. I could imagine that this could be possible, given a high bandwidth network connection, fast hard drives and processor and an OS of the *nix flavor. Reason to do this would be to offer affordable Filemaker Server services to third parties, since using a separate machine for every client would be considerably more expensive. Anybody any ideas about this? Regards, Ernst.

Just curious -- how many concurrent users access your databases? I looked through the server statistics thread and the largest number of guests I saw was 73. My curiosity is sparked, in part, by a thread I read on another forum that had many people saying MS Access only handles up to 5 concurrent users before its performance tanks. So I'm wondering how many users FM can handle, realistically. M.

Hello everybody! We have two servers: - Server A runs FileMaker Server 5.5 on Mac OS X - Server B runs a Terminal Server on Windows Server 2003 FileMaker Pro 6.0 is installed on the Terminal Server for the users. Both servers have fix IPs (81...) so they can be accessed from the Internet. Up to now, users had to connect from their local computers using FileMaker Pro to FileMaker Server to use the databases. Now we'd like to migrate some of them to the Terminal Server. We have linked the two servers using a gigabit-ethernet directly (both servers have two network-cards). This link uses internal IP-addresses (192.168.*.*). This way the traffic between th…

I am a FMP newbie and am having trouble understanding the FMP server/client relationship. Are the files on FMP server generally open all the time or is it okay to have a script run on the client side which opens the files? If this is the case, once the db is open on the server (because someone is logged into it) if someone else goes to log in, does it "open" the files again or does this user log onto an open file already, since another user is using it? I am probably not making any sense, but if someone understands my ? and can help me I will be eternally gratfeful. Thanks [color:"blue"]

Heather McCue posted a possible solution to the problem of file corruption when using the OS X version of Filemaker Server. Basically it was a timing issue, were closing the database or stopping the service does not immediately release the files, although it might appear that way to the user. Waiting for several minutes before doing anything with the files seemed to solve the problem.

Hey All, I'm not entirely sure if this quesiton belongs in this category of questions, but I get the feeling that it's somewhat related... I have made a database for my company; this database is comprised of about 9 files, all placed in one folder. Many of the 9 files are related to one-another using relationships'n whatnot... e.g. one of the files generates an invoicing-report which pulls-in information from a couple of the other files. Soon, my boss wants me to move the entire database onto a common server so that everyone in the company can have access to the database from different places. My question is, when I transfer this folder (full of all…

I'm new to FileMaker Server, so maybe this is a simple question, maybe not. I've developed a FileMaker program for a non-profit group as a stand alone, one desktop program. Now I've been informed that they wish to run this program off their server. Since only a few people may be using this program at any given time, do they have to purchase FileMaker Server or can FileMaker 6 handle it? I know you can peer-to-peer the software, but that's one area I haven't dealt with. Thanks.

We are performing some maintenance on our Windows NT server, and in the meantime, I installed FileMaker Server 5 on a 350 MHz iMac, running Mac OS 9.2.2. I allocated about 100 MB RAM to FMServer, but it looks like it's only utilizing about 5% of that (maybe FMServer's suggested size). So I'm wondering... Why is network performance about 50 to 75% that of the NT server? Many have politely told me that it's really slow today... And I agree. I actually thought it would be faster. I made sure to check the "Maximize Performance" button, but I'm now eyeing the database cache setting. I looked at the Usage Statistics (see screenshot) and it appears as if I'm maxing…

O.K. I realize this has been covered multiple times in this forum, I guess I want confirmation. I host approximately 30 FM files in a small user (10 or so) environment running FMPro Server 5.5. I'm really doing this to increase performance, so I hope it works. (You've worn me down to where I feel like it makes sense!) Couple of Questions: 1) Everyone seems to agree that for a Windows Platform to use W2K client (not server). I'm cool with this, but I'm curious as to why the FM best …

As I have no previous experience with Filemaker, especially not with such a big DB ı want to avoid pitfalls. I am considering to run FM Server. Havent bought one yet but have already researched in the Web. Q1: 3 possibilities: 1-Buy from FM İnc. (999.-US$) 2-Buy from companies likea Atomic park...(869.-US$) 3-Buy from CDW or Cos central (FM server 5.5 VLA)(699.-US$) I have no Idea what VLA means, and what is the benefit if I buy from FM direct. Q2: When I have calculation…

Although my dbs are hosted by our network server (NT 4.0), when users go to open the files, they get a message "The file was write-protected, you will not be able to make changes". I have moved the files into the same directory, one level up, and one level down from the Filemaker Server executable location, with no success. To get around it, I have to close the service on the server, so one of the users becomes the host. I'm certain I'm missing something easy here; hopefully someone can enlighten me!

Hi All, We have a major problem with Filemaker server here, and I would really appreciate some advice or help! Apologies in advance for the long post, but I want to make sure I've included any information that may be relevant. Our Filemaker system here is FM Server 5.5, with 5.5 Clients on the desktop. The server is Windows NT/SP6, clients are a mix of 98,NT,2K and XP. We also have a Filemaker unlimited web solution, running with Apache/Linux and the Java plugin. In total, there are around 107 databases, the largest of which is around 150Mb in size. This is the one we seem to be constantly having problems with. The system is under reasonable load most…

Good day, everyone, I would like to open all files being served off of FM Server 5. My thought has been to obtain a list of all files on the server, and then simply use a script to Open each of them. But, I have two problems. First, I don't know how to obtain a list of all files on the server dynamically. The list of files will change on a regular basis as I am developing a very large solution. And second, how do I use the Open script command with, possibly, a value stored in a field? Once all files are opened, I can use the script commands to get the list of the all the files and perform my operations. But the key to my challenge is to get all the fil…

Filemaker has recently posted a Tech Info article on its website that effectively trashes OS X as a suitable host for Filemaker server. Tech info article 108428, posted 5 August, says that the only way to safely close files hosted under OS X is to manually access the server from another machine using the admin plug in and close each file by hand, one by one. This is more than just a pain. It means that there is no way to gracefully handle a forced shut down of the server computer when the administrator is not present, for example due to an overnight power cut. Having a temporary battery back-up will not protect the databases from damage because there is no autom…

Is it possibile to run both apps on the same machine (mac w/mac os 9) simultaneously ? Is it possible that FMP opens via host menu the files served by FMS running on the same machine ? This way I would not need another machine to run night scritps or batch operations.

I'm running V5 of server. I want to access my database over the internet from a remote office. The offices are behind firewalls. What would be the best way to do this? I have opened port 5003 and am forwarding it to the internal IP of the server but it is not working. Can this be done this way? Is their a better way for me to do this? Would web client be better? How about over a VPN? Thanks!

Currently, the only users of the db are MAC OS 9.1 clients (one box is a new OSX/Classic mode "dual booter"), and it is hosted on one of those boxes. The plan however is to have a couple PC users jump onto the db after an upgrade to to 6.x, we are I think 4.1/4.2 now, so its a bit of a leap. I know just about nothing about FileMaker and I'm not a MAC guy, I mainly keep the network up and the WinNT4/2k servers running and doing thier thing. So I need to decide are we going to host this db server on an OSX box for 9.1/OSx/Win32 clients, or should I stick it on a 2k box? So that is the advice I'm looking for. Everyone is on the same subnet, it would not get alot of…

Hi, Office setup OS :XP FMP6 FMS Home Setup FMP6 A question about programming with FMP6 and then putting the database in a server enviornment. When I program at home without server running I Define relationships, use open script steps etc by using the folder name in open file window. If I then take this database to the office (WIth Filemaker server) do I need to re-define these links using the Host button in the open file window or does server 'magically' take care of this ? Thanking you in advance.

Hi, Is there a way to have a unique calculation field? This calculation field is the result of three other text fields. The combination of these three fields has to be unique in the database. FMP doesn't give me the option of unique when creating the calculation field. Is there a work around for this? Thanks Stanley

I have a client which has 5 local users within a LAN and 7 remote users via VPN, all hitting the FMP 5.5 server. The local users are experiencing the "worm" on some very simple work procedures (sorting on indexed fields...etc) and are complaining about the slow performance. I know that FMPServer processes are single threaded. So what I suspect is that the remote users and their workload are dragging the down local users performance. Meaning, the local users server requests must wait in line behind the remote users server requests. This in effect slows the entire system to a grinding halt. Any light somebody may shed on this subject is greatly appreciated. …

Let me start of with the fact that I am a babe-in-the-woods here. Six years ago I developed two FMP systems for a non-prof that offers free support to cancer victims and their families. One system tracks Participant activities and various statistics (type of cancer, Oncologist's name, etc.). The other tracks donor activity and generates acknowledgement letters. Both were developed in FMP 4.1. I am now being asked to perform a major upgrade in which I will integrate the two systems, and add an accounting module. I know enough about FMP to know that I can make the programs work. BUT, they have a new 7 station office network (all PCs running Windows XP), and they want a…

Okay. I'm totally lost. I've been using fm for years. I have 6.0 running on all my machines. Now I bought the Server and installed it on its own machine and don't know where to go from here. I have machines running 98 and some 2000 and two on XP. I have a Novell server that we all log into and that's where I store all my FM files. I was told that if I install the Server on its own machine it'll make things faster. I don't know how to see it from my other machines, I don't know how to move files to it, can't get remote admin to work. So far with Novell we see the drive on the server as either F, G or H so I can access files by going to H:... What do I do with this Server m…

Had a power outage today and it was long enough that my UPS sent my network into shutdown mode. In theory, it properly shut down FMS. Some of the attached clients weren't on backup power so when power went, so did they. 1-2 users may have been connected at the time. Restarted FMS, files were loading, but very slowly (go to hosts, not all files would be there, go to hosts again, a few more would be there.). Not all the files showed up so i restarted the FM service. That got it going. Users complain of no "find" mode in main 2 files (linked). I check with my master password, same thing. Shut down server, open just as a file, same thing. Double check pass…

I have written a system in FM PRo 5.5 which will be used by my client whose PCs will all be running FM Pro 6. I know that this is not a problem. The number of files and users make the use of FM Server desirable if not essential. I am considering bying a copy of FM Server 5 at a good price fronm an internet auction. Are these compatible ? Many thanks in anticipation. ( I am a part-time developer whilst training to be a teacher) Andrew Bruno

We are a small K-8 school (300 students) using a FM Server 5.0.2 for our school database on a Mac network (9.2) If we were to get another server, could we easily run two servers, one for the main school database, and a second as a student server for their projects, to learn about databses, etc. But we would not want the students to even see the main database. Would like this to happen without jumping through too many hoops. Any thoughts? Cheers

filemaker 5.5 server on linux filemaker 5.5 clients on 2 windows nt, 1 windows 98, 1 windows xp, 1 mac os 10.2 Everything works great in windows. I have an image database where I import references to the images that are on the linux server. I do all the importing with the troi file plugin on windows. I know that the mac is not able to see a reference to the image but now i need a workaround for this. I can't for the life of me figure out how to get the mac to even do an import or insert from the server. The server share does not show up on the window when I go to insert picture, quicktime, etc. It shows up if I use the troi plug-in, but none of the files can …

I'm totally new with FM. I have a database (with whole bunch of .fp5 files) and it needs to be "loaded" to a dedicated server running FMS 5.5. I would like to know how to put the database files to the server so that the clients, which are running FM Pro 6, can open and share the database. Orginally I created a new folder in W2K server, shared the folder, and just opens the .fp5 file from the share. After reading some comments and document, I don't think using windows share is a good idea. Now, I need to know a proper way to load and share the database from FMS. Can some one give me a hand? TIA

I am running FMP Server (v.5) under Mac OS9. Recently had to relocate it to our company's central data center. I need to have the ability to password protect the entire computer, much like Mac OS X built in screensaver that has the password option. I do not want use a screen saver that is application based as that degredates the performance of FMP server. All I really want to do is dim the screen to black, and enable a password to protect it from unwanted use. Will a control panel based screen saver degredate the server's performance the same way an application based one does? Right now, upgrading FMP server to the OS X version is not an option which I realize would fix m…

I will be setting up a Filemaker Server that will be used with local clients as well as Remote clients. There are about 15 local clients. The Remote clients will be accessing the databases using a IP number. There will be about 6 remote clients. The site that is hosting the files has a DSL Line that runs at about 384kbps for upload. We may have to stay with that line speed because of location. Currently the computer that is running the server is a Macintosh 400mhz G4 with 192kb memory running OS 9.2.2 and Virtual memory is turned Off. Filemaker Server is the only active application that this computer is running. Filemaker Server has been allocated 40mb of memory and 40m…

I downloaded the Trial version of the FM Server. I hosted two relational FMDB and had them "served up" by starting the server on Mac 10.2.6. We used the DB from a remote location by specifying a host, opening the DB and entered data. Seemed to work fine for 2 days. Then I went to the server computer, opened the DB and it said file was damaged, use recover. When I recovered, the last 2 days of data were missing. What's up? I'm getting a bad feeling about converting to FM Server. Why not just keep hosting without it? Thank you! Help.

Hello all, I have gotten a password font to mask the password field of my login process. However, I have both Mac and PC clients and I've found that I need to install the font on all computers for the password to be properly hidden. The problem arises when the font is not found, the font default to a readable set. Is there a way to either embed the font in the fp5 file or to have FM server serve the font with the fp5 file? I know the serving is possible with plug-ins, but what about additional supporting files? Thanks for discussion. damyena

I am running FM Server 5.0 on a PII, NT Server. The clients on the LAN are G3/G4 iMac's. Every now and then I take a copy the database with me on my laptop (PIII, WINXP) and use it . I have notice the performance is slower on my laptop than on the LAN. The biggest difference is I don't use FM Server on my laptop, but it seems like the laptop should still have better performance. I have also tried it on a P4 and PowerBook G4, both slower than the LAN. Is this normal, should I be concerned? Are there any good benchmark tools I can test my database on?
