I am couple questions. 1. I am developing a DB that I would like to deploy on the network, other than istalling FileM pro on a shared server and web sharing the application on the server what would I need ? 2. After deploying the DB, what is the easiest way to re-deploy changes to DB without intrupting the users ? what about about the existing data in the DB ? for example in Ms. Access you can split the DB into client and server portion and have the data in the server portion and you can change the client as you wish without affecting the data as long as you do not change the data structure, even then it will allow but it will warn you about the data integrity. …

Hallo, I have 3 tables, Products, Orders, and OrderProducts. Products is a list of all possible products, identified by ProductId A record in Orders is created when someone phones with an order, and is given an OrderId The Products for an Order are stored in OrderProducts, which contains OrderId, ProductId and Quantity. On my order form I want to display data from the Order table in the header, then with a list of data from the OrderProducts, but for each OrderProduct I want to display data from the Products table, such as Product Name, Manufacturer etc. How can I do this? I created a form based on Orders, then a portal for OrderProducts, but I can't wor…

I was wondering if anyone knew of a way to slipstream the 7v3 updater into the FMP7 installer? I will be rolling out FMP7 to about 25 users in the next month or two and it would be nice if there was a way that I could slipstream the updater into the installer so I won't have to install the product and then install the update. Thanks for any help you may have. Jeremy

Hi - This is my first post here. I am very new to this and purchased FM Pro 7 on a recommendation from a friend / business associate. So, I am wondering if this is what I need to do what I want. I know that FM is very powerful, but please read what I HOPE to do... I am mainly a studio engineer / musician by trade. I supplement my income by doing CD artwork / layouts. These are my only sources of income. I am getting fairly busy as of this year and am seeking better ways to organize my info. What I would like to do is create a database in FM 7 that allows me to have three main sections and several nested sections. The three main sections would be audio (for re…

I upgraded my database to v7 from 5.5. It works OK except for an average calculation(which doesn't work) in a report with grouped data and totals. The report is set up to show the number of events per month and gives the total events over the last 7-8 years in the leading grand summary with the average events per month. The subsummary is by Year (leading) and Month (trailing). It worked OK in v5.5 but now the average calculation does not work. Any help would be appreciated Arnold

We're in the process of migrating to FMP server 7 advanced from FMP 6 Unlimited. Is it possible to run both versions on a one dedicated server running MS IIS on an entry server?

I have been slowly rebuilding my solution. Just for the fun of it I thought I would try converting my old files. I have not tried this since 7.03 upgrade. 2 problems came up. 1. The new files will not open, I think I have a file reference problem since it tells me it can not find an file, but the file is there. 2. The files are not combined into one solution. When I read the manual I understand that you have to buy a third party software to combine tables into one solution, I am having troubling beliving fm would do that. Can you confirm there is no way to simply put the tables together.

After migrating a FM 6 file to FM 7, I noticed I can't find some records which I know are there. I just get a pop up message with "No records match this set of find requests" When I view the file in table mode I can find the record manually. What am I doing wrong?

Hi, I'm brand new here - first post. First question: There are some ads on this forum that offer FileMaker 6 for as low as $70 (such as from Hard Core Mac and eDirect). They claim to be perfectly legal, fully functioning copies. Are these legitimate? Any downside to purchasing from these places? Sounds a LOT better than $200+ for retail. Also, I was fairly proficient in FM Pro 4 in its heydey, but really don't use it much in my current job. However, I've been charged with helping some other users upgrade from 4.1. Is it a bad idea to just upgrade to version 6? Or would they be better off going to 7? If it matters, these aren't particularly sophisticated us…

I, my company, has lost most everything in a fire. My data files are backed up but lost the Filemaker disk. I use version 6 and I need it for 5 users. Should I purchase version 7? Will my version 6 programs work ok? What should I expect to pay for a 5 license package from a reliable vendor? Larry

Hello Intro: I am trying to get some ideas to this preformance drawback. Background: I am using FMP Server 7 and FMP pro 7 clients. There are 38 Databases hosted on the Server. Pluggin: I am using the 24u SimpleHelp plugin - this generates Help Tags for a Layout. Problem: To implement the Help Tags, they have to be set on each layout of each database. Now we are trying to utilize FMP 7 advantage of not opening all databases on opening. However, the 24u Simple Help pluggin requires the file to be opened and run to attach the Help Tags. This is a huge preformance issue on start up. Right now each Database attaches the Help Tags on the opening s…

I recently purchased FMP server 7 adv and was dismayed to learn that my current equipment (2 400mhz G3s w/512RAM) is below the recommended CPU specs. I called Filemaker and the tech guy stuck to the party line and said a G4 or better running at a min. of 500mhz was required. Has anybody tested this out? If I do need a new machine, can any mac types advise on the relative merits of an xserve over a regular powermac G4, and also on the relative merits of OSx server over using the built-in apache server. thanks

I inherited a Mac FM database that they want converted to FM7 for windows. The first 2 files I opened converted fine (dealers and customers). The invoice file is very large 47mb and the conversion starts, goes through multiple passes and ends with no errors. But is also does not create a converted file. Thoughts?

Hi, I've never posted here before and I haven't really ever worked with Filemaker before. The database that is having the problems was designed by my father before his passing. I have just recently updated the database from Filemaker 4 to Filemaker 7 and since the upgrade there have been warning messages that were never there before. They are: - "This record cannot be modified in this window because it is already being modified in a different window" It always comes up two at a time and whatever I do I can't get rid of it. The layout is setup as a button interface where you click the buttons it changes the layout in the window. When I hit certain buttons that is…

In dev6 this script works beautifully. In dev7 it sets the proper fields to create the relationship but the screen doesn't reflect it. I have discovered that if I go to the "Define Database" -"Relationships" tab, click on the relationship and pop open the "edit relationship" window, then exit back to the file, the screen changes to reflect the new relationship. What is that doing and how do I create that effect in the script. I have tried "commit record" but to no avail. Now I'm constipated! DEV6.... IsValid(area#zk_matrix_a1#zk_matrix_ac::zk_area_p) SetField {"zk_area_ag", "area"zk_matrix_a1#zk_matrix_ac::zk_matrix_ac"} Go to Layout {"One Area Of Focus"] …

Edit: I need to clarify the original question. I'm asking about the change to the behavior of the Go To Related Record script step. In previous versions, it did not bring the related file to the foreground. In version 7, it does. I need to have the functionality of this step without bringing the hidden related file to the foreground. Is there a way to do this in 7, or has this functionality disappeared, to be replaced with a complicated workaround? Original post: I have a 13-file database written in 5.5 and I'm currently going through the process of converting it to 7. So far so good, I've figured out several issues so far but I've encountered one I'm stumpe…

Our company currently has a high number of FMP 5.0 DB's with no planned upgrade to 7. That said, we are running the 5.0 server software and need to purchase another copy for installation on a desktop device that will host the files as opposed to our server that hosts the other files (long story). Is the Server 7.0 software compatable with FMP 5.0 DB's or must we purchase another copy of server 5.0? Since we are looking to install the server software on a Desktop Device running Windows 2000 Pro/XP, I see the documentation states there is a 10 user limit. Is this limit valid or can we have 40 users hosting to the desktop device? Is the upgrade from FMP 5.0…

Hello. I have recently upgraded our filemaker from 6 to 7 and a few things are not working as they used to..... One main one is that we have dropdown boxes that are populated with a pair of fields (customer id and customer name). It is set to sort on the second field but under FM6 once the dropdown was selected, a user could type the first 2 characters of the customers' name and it would automatically select the first matching customer. This no longer happens and we are having to manually plough through all of the customers to find the correct one. Does anyone have any ideas :?? Thanks phil

In prior versions, double-clicking a container field launched an audio recording function. Now in FM7, it unceremoniously crashes the whole program. Are sound clippings no longer supported at all? Trying to insert "Sound" from the menu also crashes FM7. On the other hand, using Insert Quicktime allows me to insert and then play an mp3 file. No mention of any of this in the manual's index. Has anyone had these issues? Also, I can insert files like doc and PDF, but to open them requires me to go through a two step export process that saves the openable copy of the file somewhere else. I can't drag files, mp3s or pictures in or out (I used to be able to drag jpegs and s…

This is for a db that is used to record individual daily receipts, called receiptsdb. I have a detail/sub-summary report created in FM5-6 which required the following: 1. A Find of all receiptsdb records in a selected fiscal year (prior to) the currently-selected month; 2. A Sort of this found set, then an Export (FM) of the receiptsdb amount data summarized in 3 ways-to a file called priormonthtemp1; 3. Then an Import of this exported/summarized data into another existing (temporary use) FM file-called priormonthtemp2. 3. Then a new Find in receiptsdb for only the records in the currently-selected month and fiscal year; 4. A Sort of this new found set, then a…

I have a database on an old Macintosh II running OS 7.5 and Filemaker 1.1. I need to transfer that data over to a Windows PC in a useable format, whether it is Access, Excel, FM7, or anything else useable. I have read about complicated ways of upgrading version-by-version, but I don't have a Mac that supports any software that's come out in the past 10 or so years. The database is just a simple address book with around 7,000 records. What is the best way for converting this ancient database to something we can use today? I was thinking exporting to a comma delimited text file -- any opinions?

Hi there, We are a small company currently running our database on FM PRo 5.5 and FM Server 5.5. We are considering our options of upgrading to FM 7 and Server 7 but have been told that there are several incompatibility issues with FM 7 not being able to read/identify FM 5.5 files. One person told me that they had a client who did the upgrade and then had to get a developer on site for 100 hours to manually convert all of their files!!! Can anyone tell me if this is a serious problem. Is it easy to overcome? Is it worth upgrading to FM 7? Also, as FM 7 can now take any file type, we are wondering whether we could use FM 7 as an internal groupware appli…

I am completely rewriting my solution from scratch in FM7 and am preparing to port the data to the new solution. I am in FM 5.5 with about 12 files and will end up with two FM7 files, one with the data and another with all the images ( scanned patient information ). In a few months I need to go live with the FM 7 solution. Being a physician office I have little room for error and my nurses are very unwilling beta testers, when I go live I cannot afford to go backwords to then try and go forward again. They will kill me and good nurses are hard to find. My 12 files are very complex and initial attempts to convert to FM 7 files were not succesful ( too many excep…

I'm currently running 9 solutions, for a total of 46 files served with FMServer 5.5. Each solution have its own files (tables) and have some tables in common with other solutions. Now I'm planning a migration to 7. But what would you do? 1. A single FM7 file containing 46 tables (one file for all the 9 solutions) or 2. One file for each solution plus one or more file for the common tables? ... More generally, developing in fm7, what is the best file-vs-table configuration? What are the advantages of having related tables inside the same files and having them in separate files? Thanks in advance, Paolo

Need some ideas here. I have a fm6 relational db with 7 files. Can I and How do I do the following: I would love to end up with a single file with multiple tables utilizing fm7's strengths. Can I hand create the new single file and 7 tables and then somehow convert and import my 7 individual fm6 files into this new single db of 7 tables (or more occurrances as necessary). Then I somehow need to import my scripts and layouts. No clue on that. None of the documentation I read so far is very good on explaining any of the above. HELP!! Mike

Just sharing a problem solution as I could not find anything on the subject here in the Forums. I had converted a small database from 6 to 7 which had time and date fields to record the time on a single record whenever there was an update of any data in that record. When I started the database in 7 for the first time, the date and time was updated on all 2000+ records. After saying several not so nice words under my breath, I found that FM7 had written the following script and set it to run at startup: # The Today function was removed in FileMaker Pro 7. # The 'Today' field and this script were generated by conversion. # On startup, this script updates the valu…
