Hi, What I want to know is: Is it possible to put a main database and the related portal database in two seperate runtime modules? CASE: I have a db with 20 fields. 5 of them are stored in another db connected as a portal. I edit 15 fields weekly and send the database to the other person. At his end he must be able to edit his db with 5 fields without using the main database. But when he starts the main database at his end, his 5 fields must showup in the portal window in the main db. Hi all I am trying to do two submenu off a main menu using the visibility portals. These two submenu would over lap each other. That is the problem. I have repeating information that I want to display using a portal. The problem is that my layout will not accomodate the number of records present. A scroll bar will not work for the type of report I am producing. What I need is two columns. I need the first field of Column 2 to succeed the last field of Column 1. Anyone have any idea's? Papa.

Ok so I am trying to make a staff availiability database, I already have a relational DB for the staff and now I want to log their avaliabilities. Hi all Is it possible to do a lookup in a portal by picking a record. I have two db- one has a description of welding rods to weld various steels. I would like to view in the second db all of the welding rods available to weld a particular steel. Then i want to pick that rod and preview the information pretaining to that welding rod. This is my first time. Please be gentle. I would like to know how to stop portals from displaying an extra row when not necessary. I have a portal displaying related records (in another file). Next to each portal entry is a button that takes you to the related record. Unfortunately, the portal displays an extra row and consequently the button?? How can I stop this?? I have 2 dbs -- 'students' and 'activeYears' with student ID being the linking field. Every year that a student participates in our program, I create a new record in 'activeYears' with the student ID, the active year and the particular school that student is attending. Hi everyone, I have three files: (1) Book, (2) CDROM, (3) Files. A (record of) Book can be found on many CDROM (records), and can correspond to several Files (records). So Book A can stay on CDROM A and CDROM B, and Book A consists of File AA and AB on CDROM A, and File BA, BB, and BC on CDROM B. I want to place CDROM and Files as two synchronized portals on the Book's layout#1. When I add a new record to Book, from the CDROM portal I have to be able to select CDROM A (value list based on the [title] field in the CDROM file), and have to be able to add (!) This is odd behavior.....maybe somebody else has experienced it and can shed some light on the issue. I have a button which fills the portal row (but does not overlap or touch boundries). I have the roll over function enabled so the cursor changes to a pointer when over the button. Sometimes, when I click this button it changes color (as buttons do when clicked) but it "hangs" in that state. What is even more interesting is that it becomes a rollover color change instead of a pointer. In other words, the button will change color when it I roll out or over it (much like a rollover button on a webpage). Any ideas?

I have seen a very nice feature on a filemaker db, which I'd like to replicate on our system In short when you are done with your log in dialogue (not the fmpro one, but one built up w/n the solution) you have your start page. on one side there was a portal which showed whom else was logged in and from which IP they were at. I have found no such built in function with fmpro??? Hello all, I'm having a slight problem printing portals. All the text prints just fine in the portal. The problem is that the lines between the portal rows are being cut off. At the ends of the portal you can see a little bit of the lines but in the center of the portal it's blank. The first portal row is ok it's only the rows after that that print without the lines. Please help Ias I have a customer that is ready to use this database and this is the only thing keeping this from being used. any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Ok I have got three dbs one with the main body of data. I have a portal within this db that has comments on this information and there is a join db to connect the main db and the comment db because you can assign a comment to many bits of main data. now a comment can be defined into three different types a, b and c what I what to be able to do is filter out type c information from the portal on different layouts of the main db Is this possible Regards, DJS

I am trying to put together a new sheet with some existing sheets. The sheets I have now contain student information, ie, name, phone numbers, class level, ect.. Ok.. first I own an English school in Japan and I am trying to tie everything in on one db. So I created one that contains the student information. Here is my scenario: I have a contributions database and a members database. I have setup a relationship from a global field in contributions to a calculation field named "c_quick_key" in the members database. This relationship is used to allow the user to search by part of a member's name or their giving id. By entering part of the member's last name records are displayed in the portal. When a user click's on a record in the portal the GIVING ID field is set. This works great. The problem is that most husbands & wives have the same giving id. This is for tax purposes. Since most of our members file their taxes jointly they share the same giving id. N…

I need a strategy for printing portal rows in a report. I know you can get a portal to slide and shrink, but not the contents of the portal. As it stands now, I include a portal object in a report layout that includes a large number of other objects (other fields and graphic items). I may have any number of portal rows that I need to print in my report. Also, the size (number of printed lines) for each portal row can be from 1 to 12 lines. If I make each portal row of a size to include 12 lines, each row that prints takes up 12 lines even if a particular row is only 1 line. Of course this makes the printed page unacceptable. I have seen in someone else's FMP database a portal which lists the Company name (in bold) and underneath that is a list of its people, then the next Company name with its sublist of people etc. The Company names are listed only once. A script overlays the portal row: Double Click on the Company name and it takes you to the company details layout. Double click on the person's name and it takes you to the person's details layout. But now I want it to use one more criteria for the selection of the records shown. I also want to match ClientID between the two DBs. Ok, maybe what I would like to do is impossible, but according to me it seems like it should be pretty simple. I have a photo database with one main layout. On the main layout, each photo has a unique ID number. For each record, there is a field for the ID number and also a field for keywords (like people, business, food, etc.) and a small thumbnail of the photo. hey i'm just wondering how i would go about copying data from a specific row in a portal that the user clicks on. Right now i have the portal set up and all the relationships are correct. On each portal row there is a button that runs a script to copy the fields contents and then go to another file and paste those contents into another field. The thing is it doesnt just copy one field, but copies 'field1' and performs external script (which tells it to paste into that files field), copies 'field2' and performs another script (telling it to paste that into a different field from the same file as before). In the absence of our usual programmer, I have to knock up a database for a mail order catalogue, to hold the information for the Curtains pages. It will be used to generate formatted text (in QuarkXPress, I can do that bit!) for the printed catalogue. Each item has a unique product code (e.g. G1234). Hi all, If you have ever seen the DB "MoreVis" from John Mark Osborne's site Database Pros, you will know this has 4 great examples of visibilty tricks. I get the idea and have used these in some of my solutions. But 1 of the examples has me baffled. It is the example where a checkbox can be seen but is greyed out until you enter a date in the date field. I see the workings of this, the relationship with the constant field, the two checkbox fields, 1 grey not allowing entry into the field, 1 black allowing entry into the field. One called DonationsDatabase.fp5 (the primary one) and a related one called RelatedDonor.fp5. RelatedDonor.fp5 contains all the individual donations. One DonationsDatabase there is a portal that lists all the donations associated with that donor (via relationship of the donor_id). I have several form letters that utilize the donor information. I'm trying to create a portal for a contact database which will accomodate a "Group" concept. A company may be part of a larger group. What I would like to create is a portal in an interface file showing a list of companies with those companies forming part of a larger group in one portal row with the group name. I have a script with a loop that creates records dynamically These records appear on a portal. When I have a large number of records wich requires me to use the scroll bar to access them I have a problem. When I try to go to a portal row that is at the end of the portal using the scroll bar while the script is running, The script keeps pulling the scroll bar to the begining of the portal, and I can never get to the record I want unless I pause the script. Does anybody have a better idea?

I use a portal to calculate sales related to an event. The file also relates to a inventory file which through a look-up field indicates if there is inventory for a specific item. If there is no inventory, I have a calculation which places an image in a container field under the data to indicate that no data should be put in that field, but I haven't figured out a way to prohibit data from being entered. If I place the container on top of my fields, of course I prohibit all data entry. I checked out DataPros.com "Visibilty" solution, which looks great, but won't work within another portal. I have a layout in form view that has data pertaining to an organization. In this layout I have a portal to another file that has names data. The key that links these two is a numeric field called organization_ID. The portal fields are Prefix, First name, Last Name, Suffix, Birthday. I want to enter in the first name and last name in the portal and do a search in the related records. Is there a way to do this? If I get multiple matches, I would like to choose from the results. If I get no match then I want to create a new record in the related file.

In the client database, i've created a relationship for customer_id::images and customer_id::client So, there is a scroll down thumbnail list of client images when you click on a particular client. Can't seem to understand the relationship trick that needs to be applied. A Value List shows a checkboxlist from the field (text). I need to have the checkboxes that are selected (on each record differently) appear as rows in a portal. This way I can click in the portal and go to the related record in the same document. Really handy to move between records. Any ideas?

Hello, I've made a layout that includes a portal. The "show vertical scroll bar" option for this portal is checked. But the scroll bar seems to disappear in certain instances. Does the scroll bar only appear when you click in the portal? When I come from another layout, I don't see the scroll bar until I click in the portal. I also have a button on the layout that takes you to the related record of whatever item I've selected in the portal (but it doesn't take you to another layout). This also makes the scroll bar disappear. There are always more records/items in the portal than the number of rows shown. Thanks, Lee

I am trying to redesign a multifile solution so that all the layouts are stored in one core file. At the core of the system are clients, payments, sites, and deliveries. Each client is assigned to a site, and has deliveries made to that site. Payments are linked both to the client and the individual deliveries. I have three tables, purchase_orders.fp5, po_lines.fp5 and inventory.fp5 The purchase_orders table has a portal of po_lines set by a relationship on the field po_id. I have written a script so when the items ordered from the purchase order are received, the user can hit a checkbox and activate a script within the portal row that should add that item into the inventory database. Everything works perfectly except that no matter which row is selected the first portal row is the one referenced (set field 'temp' by po_line by po_id:product_id). I assume this has something to do with the way I have my relationships setup. Ideas?

I decided to put addresses into a separate file because some of our contacts have two or three locations, most have just one, and a few have 25 or so. I'd like to have an Agency Summary layout to print. I'd like it show all appropriate addresses, but I don't want to make 25 portal rows just in case and have them all be blank 90% of the time. I have 3 files mainly involved with what I want to do. First, I have a database that does nothing more than parse an entire webpage into the fields I want the info in, and then exports, and reimports it into my "OIL" database. Hello Here is some new info from 1 day of trial and error and 2 min FM tech support (I wish they did weekends!): I am trying to validate a portal field using a calculation that sums the value of same field over the number of records created in the portal (using a self-join relationship). SPecifically, I enter a percent in each record, and the sum of all the percents must be 100. The calculation doesn't occur until after the portal record changed or portal exited, so validation doesn't occur properly. FM says only by using a script (hence, an uwieldy button) can I get this to work. I found another ugly workaround: I validate from another porta…

Hi All, i have 3 portals on one of my layouts. each showing 4 portal rows. i have embossed and coloured the fields white and the portal colour is grey. when i print, the first row prints out in grey (on all portals) but shows the embossed effect, but the remaining 3 print out in white (the colour of the field) but the first field (furthest to the left) is half grey and half white and also the 3 remaining fields are overlapping with the colour of the field (WHITE) !! is there a simple way to print layouts with portals on them? to print out how they look on screen? thanks, ricardo

Hi guys, I have a Parent db and a child db. I created a child portal in the parent db, so that I can see multiple children for one parent. The children have some fields in them, that are calculated fields. Now I'm trying to define a sort in the relationship needed for creating the portal, but the sort should be on a calculated field. For some reason, the sort seems to be random. Do you guys know if a sort on a calculated field is possible inside a portal? Thanks! I know this is a hard one.

I have a portal on a layout in my database. When a user clicks a button on the layout, I would like a certain record to be displayed, and a particular row of the portal to be selected. I can do this, no problem. The problem I have is when the user clicks on a field outside the portal after having clicked the button, I would like that portal row to remain selected. Hi, I have been donated a relational database which contains information about all of our staff. Each staff member has a Staff ID. There is a relationship between this database and a database conataining all staff publications. In the latter database, each publication has a list of authors (as a repeating field) with their corresponding staff number (as a repeating field). The relationship exists between the staff numbers. The notes are dynamic, depending upon which note type is selected, I want to insert a row into the product notes db (i.e. prodno, notetype, notetext). I setup portal to display all available notetypes (selfjoin), and a portal to display the note (product to productnotes). Everything works for the first note selected - the prodno, notetype and notetext get inserted - but if I select another notetype, I am getting, just the prodno, but no typetype to insert? I have a donor database in which I want to enter new donations and have each donation be a separate record in a related database, attached to a unique serial number for each donor. I had it working for a bit - but each record in the donations database was being assigned a new serial number instead of the actual donor's serial number. I have a portal, that links through to transaction records. If I add a new record to the transactions database directly, (ie withou the portal) then the auto-entry date works fine. But, if I enter the new record within the portal, no auto-enter works. Any clues as to why?

i must be a little dense i have tried to figure out by reading a few of the post heres about using global fields to do finds but i just dont seem to get it. When doing a search on certain fields inside a portal, most of the finds take much longer than they should. Finds that would be instantaneous if done directly from the related database take 30-60 seconds, with a lengthy "processing field..." progress bar showing up. And yet other finds in the portal, depending on the fields used and the content of the search, will execute in no time. I've tried indexing all the fields, that was the first thing I tried. Is there anything I can do about it? Hi there, Now i am creating a system just a bit same like the example that given by filemaker , which name: relation, is an office management system, which can keep tract of product record and also can create invoice. But i found that the example given got a problem, just in invoice entry screen, i can add in product record in the portal, but if i add in too much record, it will only show the first 20-30 item in printing(preview mode) screen, it will not made it into 2 or more pages. It is quite a big problem because not all invoice only need one page, sometime it also need more than 1 page. So is there got any way to solve this problem ? henry

The info in the portal changes depending on what I select in the pop up global field. Ex: Select "in Process" I see units in process, select "In Stock" I see units in stock. That all works fine. Hello From Brazil, I am developing a database for a gas station. As the clients finish fueling their cars, records are created and information regarding their fueling such as (total price, type of fuel, price per liter, etc..) are shown in a portal. Since customers here only pay after fueling, the gas station employee needs to be able to select one or more records from the portal and send their added amount to the "type of payment" database. After registering the payment for the selected records they should be removed from the portal. Only payment due records should be shown in the portal. any sugestions? Thanks

Relationships [order_main & Order_lines by Order#] and [Order_lines and Inventory by Item#]. All I want is to have Order_main list 10-15 Order lines that you enter item#, it brings up description and price, you enter quantity then extensions fill and you go to next line. I have 2db's, customer and contact, I have a portal on my customer db that lists my contacts name and account#, both db's are related by account#, It works great, i select the contact name hit the button and i go to there name in my contact db. when i am finish i press by back button and go back to customer db, but in the portal it changes back to show the first record in that contact db. Is there a way to add more portal on by customer db, so i can select different contact people from my contact db. and when i return from contact db to customer db. the names in the different portals remain unchanged. thanks jim

I am building a database to make a system of using lots of different things, and putting them all into one solution. Outlook for contacts, Quickbooks, and Excel for some database type info. Right now, the Excel thing works like this: We get a client, when done putting cust info into the DB, we open an Excel template. Each customer has their own workbook. We use 3 worksheets in each workbook. The 3 sheets are all the same, they just represent data from different vendors. We want to stop using the workbooks, and integrate it all into the FM Solution. I've tried everything--how do I put a button inside a portal row that will insert contents of a field from that portal row (or the related record) into another field? No matter what row I click in, the button always pastes the data from row #1 of the portal.

To simplify this, I'm going to say there are two DB files: Significant Other, and CY48. The CY48 file generates a report to be sent to the state. Part of the report pulls information from the client's "significant others" (i.e. mother, father, siblings, caretaker, etc.). Hi, folks. I'm new here, and to Filemaker in general, and I need some help. I have a database system that I am working on that is growing in all sorts of directions but the relevant files to my question are Invoice, Line Items, and Inventory. For entering a new order I have set up a layout in the Invoice file that includes a portal to the Line Items file. As each item number is typed into the portal the related info from the Inventory file is looked up and copied into the relevant fields. I then enter in the Qty_Ordered and using a layout in the Line Items file I print out a Picking Ticket for the warehouse help. That all works like a charm, and I couldn't be happier…

Hi, I'm adding associated records via a portal - fine. The client has asked for these associated records to be displayed in the main view as a list of checked fields as they like check boxes. These check boxes will be read-only (records created via a layout with a portal, but displayed in another summary layout as checked boxes). I've got a VL of the assoiated fields, but when I insert the assoc record and apply the VL as read-only check boxws I only get one field (obviously). Any ideas how I should be doing this?? I have a main database of workshop participants and the portal lists all the workshops each has registered for. If I want to find all the participants of a particular workshop, I can perform a find on the workshopcode and it will list all the participants in that particular workshop (the portal also lists all the other workshops those participants have registered for which is not a problem). I would then like to go to another layout and list the participants for the found set only. It does that plus "other" workshops of the first record. Also How can I get the title of that workshop to appear in the header of the list? Thanks for you help.

I have one db (main.fp5) that contains several thousand records and another db (subs.fp5) that contains over 100 records. In main.fp5 I have a portal that shows the subscriber's id (Field: SUBSCRIBERID) when the field MAKE in main.fp5 matches the field MAKES in subs.fp5. The field MAKES is a calculation that consists of the name of each make of automobile selected by the subscriber. This is probably obvious but... I have a global field so that when a user clicks on a button it filters the portal based on this global field. I am trying to create a button so that the portal will show records in which a particular filed is empty. I have a relationship between field A and the global field. when field A is empty I cannot figure out how to translate that to the global thus filtering the portal to show when the global is empty.
