    I've found a radio button graphic I would like to use (Buttons & Things site). One is selected, the other isn't. I've tried stacking them, but can't figure out how to use them with an existing value list and how to make the 'selected' graphic display while it's unselected counterpart not. My test is simple - Y, N (auto-enter being no). Is there a way to use these cool buttons? I also found great checkboxes ... same issue ... assigning them to a value list and making them display properly. Can someone point me in the right direction?

    I have a message appear on screen which contains about 7 lines of text. When the box opens, however, it only shows half of the text. The user has to drag the box to show all the text. This is a pest for the user. How do I make the box appear showing all the text?

    Hi, I have a value list in a checkbox field. I'm trying to create a calculation that says "if value A is checked, put A here, otherwise leave blank". However, because I'm saying "Field="A"", the value will ONLY show up if it is the ONLY one checked. If multiple values are checked, none of them will show up in their respective calculations. How can I rewrite the calculation so it will pull value A regardless of how many boxes are checked? Thanks in advance...again, Leah

    I have several value lists where each value is a large amount of text. There is no problem accessing the values on the mac.     I'm trying to build/use a pretty OSX-like popup menu field. It works okay when its setup as a popup *list*. It doesn't work at all when simply changing it to a popup *menu*. Bug? Okay, the field is set to use a popup list, but its set to *not* allow entry. (If you allow entry, then its graphics, even if transparent, cover the intended graphics when selected.) The intended graphics are setup as a button that calls a script that does Exit Record/Request and then does Go to Field "the field".     Know this is probably a basic question but am not sure best way to handle it. My main file references a second file of employees. The match field is employee ID. From the main file, I want my users to be able to change the name attached to a record in the main file by using the related name field on the master file layout...but what needs to be updated is the match field in the main file. I tried using a global field but realized you can't attach a value list to it. If someone could point me in the right direction, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

    When you define a value list by using data from a field AND including data from another field, is there anyway to "hide" the text from the first field in a pop up list? The data in the first is the match field (id numbers) and the second field is the employee name, which is what I want to be seen in the pop up list. This is really a follow up question from an earlier post titled 'updating a match field'. Thanks in advance for any wisdom.

  11. Saw this done once. Two fields side by side at the top of what looked like a list view. Select the first fiels and a value list appears. select on of the items. So far simple stuff. Now depending on what was selected, what looked to be a find perfomed and only the items that matched showed up. And even better, select a itme from the second fields value list and the find even tightened...using the values from both fields to perform the find. Now how the heck did they do this? And even more, how did they get fields to be active as pop-ups at the top of a record in what looked to be in list view? LR

I need a report to show what boxes were checked (for all fields, not individual) as line items. This way I can reference the price, and then do calculations. I click in the field to bring up the list, but when I select a value, the list will not go away. I have to click in an empty area on the screen in order for it to shink.     OK, after almost 40 hours on this one I am to a point where I dont know what to do. My main database is Jobs.fp5. My related is Contact.fp5. I am trying to get some information out of the contact database and into my jobs database via a value list. But here is the problem... There are 2 seperate pieces of information I need to retrieve.     Hello all, When users create a new record they are asked to assign the record to one or more categories using checkboxes. There is an "Other..." option so they can assign their own categories if necessary. I have a tally sheet set up in a related file that counts the number of times each category was selected. Now the users want to be able to also see a list of the values entered into "Other..." and have a count of each value in that list. Is this possible? I'm stumped.     Can I have a valuelist from a global field? FMDev 5.5 reports an error that it cannot be done since the field cannot be indexed... Filemaker breaks out a multiline field as single items for valuelist on regular fields.. I thought that would have been good option - so user's can modify valuelist from the web.

    In one of my FP5 databases a field with a drop-down menu appears perfectly (single-column list) on all the iMacs here in the office but on the PC the menu pops up as a multi-column list and fills the whole screen. It doesn't allow me to scroll down or across, so I can't get at all the list values or the "Other..." choice. Sorry if my terminology is a bit dodgy sometimes, I work with the Spanish version so don't know exactly what everything is called in English.

I created the value lists ok and allocated them to the fields.     I am in need of a simple tutorial for creating Conditional Value Lists. I have found some articles and examples but nothing that clearly explains how to do it. Is anyone out there up to the challenge of creating the ultimate clear and concise explanation? I would just like to have one database. I would like two fields, both of which provide value list choices. I would like the second field to have a list that changes based on the choice in the first field.   29. I'm trying to figure out how to make a browse list of personal names (generated from a valuelist displaying all records used in that field) to search for exact phrases rather than keywords.     Thank you for reading this! Think of Books>Chapters>Verses in The Bible. I have a static popup menu of the Books and a dynamic popup menu of the Chapter numbers based on the chosen book. Easy so far. The hard part is then a third popup menu (dynamic) of Verse numbers based on the two choices of Book AND Chapter. A calculation field result displays text based on these three choices.     FM4 Mac Self Relationship within a Contacts file Have Portal with linked Value List - select CARS and all garages are listed etc. First time I have done this and it is very fast and really useful. I would like to know how to make it as flexible as possible. In particular, if a Contact does several things, e.g. Plumbing, Electrics and Joinery, how can these be shown on different lists etc? Because I use simple column sort (click on the heading of the column you want to sort by), I'd like "Sort Ascending" on such fields to sort M-Tu-W-Th-F-Sa-Su. How to display this data is not a problem. All information needs to be indexed to a job number. Say, for instance, Job 1024 Each job can be split into Batches. Our district uses a standards based grading system that Use "O S G N" instead of "A B C" for scores.   45. A cryptic subject but I will try to explain the problem. I have two fields, say "x" and "xcode", where I have a value list connected to "x". When you choose a value in the value list the "xcode" is set to a numeric value for example "1" if you choose the first value.     I have a multi-table solution running off of FMS 5.5 (all clients are FMP 5.5 too). Multiple platforms are accessing the server. The solution utilizes dynamic value lists based on relations. Everything works great, _except_ on NT clients. The pop-ups show blanks. You click on it, and a single row of nothingness appears. This only occurs in NT (v4, sp6). 95, 98, XP, Mac Classic, and OS X are all fine. Any ideas, solutions, experience? Many thanks.

    All, I have 2 databases - FileA and File B. I have succesfully created a simple conditional value list in File A. I now want this list to be used in File B So far.... I have created an external value list in File B linking it to the conditional value list in File A. I have then assigned this list to a field in File B. BUT this doesnt work.   53. Hello folks. I've been using FMP for over a year now, and have recently started using FMP 5.5. When I have a field that is definded by a value list, I don't get any pop up menu when i want to enter data! My questions are this: where did it go? Is it something obvious that I'm missing, or does it have to do with the newer version? One of the pop up lists, when not being used (waiting for an entry) shows a title, i.e. Select Sport and then when u click on it all the different sports show up, but 'select sport' does not.     Thanks to this forum I can now travel between databases and layouts by selecting a desired location from a value list then clicking on a button to execute a script based on the value selected. I'd like to eliminate the button and be able to initiate the script by merely making the selection from the list - much like can be done in a web page.     A value list that I am creating is a choice between several lengthy phrases being inserted in a formatted letter.. In ten years of using FMPro, I had never run into the fact that there is a 255 character limit for each value. And, since I was exceeding that number, the phases would truncate. I have found two tech bulletins (101491 and 102388) which advise that the workaround is "use a code value in the value list and set it to trigger a lookup into another file that contains the actual data to be entered."     I am using FM 4.0v1 and have made a value list from another db to display in my main db. The value db has fields that list the type and grade of material. Since is it hard to determine what type of material is being chose by just looking at the grade I have check the box that says show information for other fields. But only the first matches showup in the value list in the main db. Example: Grade Type SA234 Pipe SA516 Plate SA106 Pipe Value list will only show SA234 and SA516 (along with the type) put not SA106 could someone suggest what I am doing wrong?

For any date and time, a maximum of 30 students can register. When a given date and time exceeds 30 registered students, that date should be removed from the value list that holds the available dates and times.   71. I have a calculated field in DB A that I am using as a value list in DB B. The DB B field is set up as a pop up field. When I go to the field to select a value the list pops up fine with the appropriate values BUT as soon as I select the value I want I get a dialog box telling me I can't modify the field. I vaguely recall that there is a need to put another field in one of the databases that acts as an "intermediary" or some such thing. TIA for any feedback.

I am trying to create a database to simplify a selection process to a specific product, which is displayed in a portal I have managed to make it work to two levels based on a relationship, but i need more scope, well at least 4 levels Product Type (5 Choices) Then by Manfacturer (Choices dependent on Product Type Selected) Then by Colours Available (Choices depend on both manufacturer and product type) This should narrow the final selction from the product database from 500 items to approx 6 Any suggestions on how to take this further. Here is my situation: I have three related tables: People (grandparent), Boats (parent), Results (child). In this database, a Person can own many boats, and a boat can have many results. No problem setting up the tables to have unique ID values (single user system) and relations to make that structure work.   79. I have set up a button (N=1 & Y=2) that a user will check if the "Billing Address" is different than the "Contact Address". Right now the button is in place but isn't linked to any type of functionality. That is where you all can help me. As the default, I would like the "Billing Address" fields to mirror the "Contact Address" and the button to be set to "N" - then based on the user actively selecting the button to "Y", the address fields would clear for the user to enter the new information.     Hi, I have created a database in FMP and I have 2 pop up menus one is comany name and the other is the size of paper eg:a1,a2,a3,a4,a5 but the sizes are all different to each company.     Used to be a power user of FileMaker years ago, but since 3.0 have drifted off into part unknown which leaves me with a problem I cannot now easily solve in 5.0. Have created a pop-up list containg 30 items for ease of entry and to control search element criteria. I now find that two or more of the items in the list are required to show up in the field.     I think I know this can't be done, but here it is anyway: I have a bunch of valuelists that I store in a preferences file, where I give the user the ability to change the list contents by including the format option Edit... If I have to replace the preferences file because of an upgrade or major bug, there doesn't seem to be a way of transferring these valuelists to the new file. I know I can get them out with a Design function, but how can I put them back into the new file???

    I guess this is a bug. But I have the strangest results with a value list in find mode. I have a relationship that is based on: a global field in database A a text field in database B As the value in the global field changes in A, the correct value list is shown (in database A) from the data in B. The value list works fine in find mode on fields that are in the current database but shows me a completely different value list on related fields. There is probably an easy explanation for this, but it is keeping me up at night: I have a calculation field in one DB ("first_name" & "/" "computer_model") that is being used by a value list in another DB as a pop-up menu. It works fine until I update the first DB. The changes are reflected in the pop-up menu, but not in previously created records. I would like all previous records to update with the new information. Any clues as to what I am doing wrong?

I want it to show only values which have not previously been chosen for one of the related files. I have two fields: "Contact Type" which is located in a db called Contacts, and "Performing Artist" which is located in a db called "Bookings." Specifically I have a donor with names and addresses etc. I have fields for title, first1, last1, title 2, first2, last2.   91. I would like to create a pop-up value list which is simply about a half dozen years to choose from, starting with next year, but changing each year depending on the date. For example, this year, the user enters the field and they can choose from 2003, 2002, 2001, 2000, 1999, 1998... but next year, the same field would supply six sequential year choices starting with 2004 and ending with 1999. I have a field in a "shopping cart" db which displays ordered items and is populated by a value list generated by relationship from an "ordered items" db. However when someone adds two items to their cart (instead of adding it once and changing the quantity to 2), it will only display in the value list once, but will appear in the portal twice. In another database I have two drop down boxes one that displays all the SERIAL_NO's from the one database, and one that displays all the OWNED_BY from the other. What I'm trying to accomplish... When I select an "Owner" from the OWNED_BY box I would rather it show me only the 20-30 serial numbers in the SERIAL_NO box instead of all of them. And in the time billing database I have a drop down box that has everyone's customer number in there that a person can select to pull there info from the other database.     I am having a problem with a checkbox list. Has anyone else had this problem with FM 5.5? There is an established checkbox list which has always worked. It lists different committees that a person can be on. One of the committees changed its name and got new members. My office assistant unchecked all the old members of the committee. Then she went in under the Define Value List and changed the name of the checkbox to reflect the new name of the committee. Lastly, she checked the new members of the committee. For reasons too long to go into in my short post, I cannot use field validations anywhere in my database so I have been forced to validate each field with a script.     Hello Everyone, I have a small problem which mabey someone can help me with. I have a database with 6 layouts. Layout 2 has over 100 pictures of different products, Each product has a value list of the different models of that product. Everything is working great except for one thing, the value lists. What the end result should be is that the person selects a product on layout 2, then it takes them to layout 3 with the correct value list for that product. I've tried using a calculation with ValueListItems. But when I try to select an item it says this field is not modifiable. Is there anyway I can do this without creating over 100 layouts?     Sorry to say, but no. The popup list size is set by FileMaker and isn't editable by developers. This includes both the width and height of the list. I can conceive of a workaround to increase the width of the list by adding spaces to the end of the value list items, either in the custom value list definition area or by adding a second field with spaces in it if the value list is based on a field. Don't know if it would work, but you could try it. Chuck
