Is it my ignorance of the program or are these 2 things bugs. 1) When I add a color to the list of custom colors it does stay there after I have closed and re-opened the program. 2) Same problem when I add a page from the help file to my favorites

Howdy, Is there a way in FM7 or FM7dev to temporarily bold/highlight keywords in found records after a search? Example: if a have a bunch of recipes and I perform a find for "onion", on all the found records containing "onion" can the word "onion" be bolded temporarily to help the user find the word? Hi, I've been using filemaker for over a year with great success, but there is something I find myself wanting to do more and more often. I've never been able to imagine how to implement this request so have worked around it, but I thought I'd ask you pros -- maybe I'm overlooking a basic feature. I'll explain by using the db I'm working on now as an example. I'm making a list of all the brands and varieties of tea available in Chicago supermarkets. This worked in FM 6 but it just refuses to in FM 7.02 When I do a find on a Calculation Field, using > or < the find comes back with no matches found or the wrong results (>3 would give you 1,2,3). Is this a new feature that I overlooked? This application is running on FM server 7.

As much as I like the "ScriptMaker" interface, I was wondering is there any way to edit the scripts in filemaker with a text editor. It is easy to make sweeping changes when using a text based method. (e.g. Set Field on 10 fields when copying data from one table to another.)

What's the best/most efficient means of finding the next highest number (i.e., highest existing value + 1) in a DB for which not all records have a value in the given field (which I'll call #Fld)? i.e., this is not a serial number; Of thousands of records, only a few dozen will have a number assigned in #Fld. This number must be unique and should be assigned in sequence when it is needed. (There may be gaps in the existing numbers.) I've created a DB for our school that stores student files. In order to keep the DB as streamlined as possible, I've stored the various student files as references. Here's the problem: the folder that contains the actual files is a shared folder on a network. When users log onto the DB I've created, and try to open the referenced file, they get a 'file not found error.' The only work around I've found is to tell the users to make sure they've logged onto the network and made a connection to the folder in question. We have a database of clinical sites and patients. Some clinical sites have two locations (for instance the UCLA site has two different locations). When a patient is accepted into our clinical study at a site with two locations they are assigned to one of the two locations. What is the easiest way to present the data entry person with the two choices ? Can a message popup based on site number entered telling the entry person to choose the appropriate location? Basically what I have is a Notes field, and some formatting buttons along the top. (Plain, Bold, Italic, Underline). I use one script for Bold, Italic, and Underline with the style as the script paramater. This is what it does... I did a reinstall of FM Server 5.5 on a NT server and when I attempt to start the FileMaker service, I get a message "The FileMaker Server service returned service specific error 51" So now FM will not run for me and I am stuck. Any help greatly appreciated.

The database I'm working on right now is basically just a way for myself and the other 3 coworkers in my department to fill out a daily production log for each of the projects we're working on. I created a FileMaker solution for tracking and scheduling of jobs to equipment. It works well. However, the company recently purchased an SQL server and a heavy application that creates job tickets, inventory, shipping and data collection. The scheduling portion of it stinks! They would like to continue to use the FileMaker solution for shceduling. Currently, users are then forced to enter common data twice (once for the SQL application and once for the Filemaker... i.e. job number, due dates, quantities, etc). I have been using Filemaker Pro v3 since it was first introduced in 1995. It does everything I need so I have not felt the need to upgrade. I have installed it in successive computers under Win 95, Win98 and now WinXP. It has performed well under all windows versions untill the last few weeks. It has performed well on my current WinXP machine until recently it has become very slow to launch - and does not launch at all when Filemaker database files (with extension *.fp3) are double clicked. I AM USING FM7 (this used to work in FM6) I have (2) databases During a script, i find one record in 1 database the script then goes to the 2nd DB and runs an import records script from that databse (subscript) But it imports ALL of the records not the "found set" of records?:? In the not-so-distant future of our database, we are going to try to make some changes. One of them is changing a field. It is a key value that is used to relate the Customer to MANY different files throughout the system. The key is stored on one file, and relationships tie in through all the files via this one field. The previous developer used a system that created this field via an increasing index, and what we want to do is change this field to be representative of the main key(such as a customer ID). Helo folks! I am buiding a database that among other things like invoicing, etc.. It calculates the comission due to each individual salesperson in the company. Of course the database has a "creation date" field, into with I can perform, in search mode, a search for weeks, months or exact dates, etc... Unlike Mac users, I'm having a problem where I need to stop the mouse wheel from changing records. Is this possible, and if so, how do I do it? As a second issue, (which would negate the first) is it possible to trigger a script/action to happen when the user switches records? Need a lil help here, I am using a button to call a new window (and create a related record) for the user to enter data into, the data entry window has 2 buttons, 1 to save the data and close the window, the other to cancel the data entry (delete the created record) and close the window. I have realised that an errant mouse click will leave the data entry window open but hidden behind the main window, is there a way to keep the focus on the data entry window until the save or cancel buttons are pressed? I have used FM for about five years but have been out of the loop for a year or so. I am starting with an advertising company and they are ready to purchase a database. They have one copy of FM pro 6 and I have a question about how I can make this work for them. We have a need to track time, several people will need to add time to the job (record). Then at the end of the month we need the totals to show for all open jobs. At the same time we need to show if we are meeting our billable hours every day. This USED to work...I could have both FMP6 developer AND FMP7 Developer open.....now I can open one and when I try to launch the other.....the splash screen shows up then it stops. I have deleted the plists, repaired permissions and I even ran cron scripts.....any ideas? Greg

Hi, I'm using a commercial Filemaker Pro database called Ebase (version 1) along with FMP 5 for Windows 98. Last week the database crashed because of a virus and I replaced the entire database (all primary and related files) with a backup copy. The new version appears fine, except the scroll wheels on both computers' mice no longer scroll between records. We're still able to move between records using the scroll icon at upper left, but I'm worried that the change signals a bigger problem. Ok I have two tables, one with courses, which includes course code and descriptions, and one with coursePerSemester, which includes the courses that are recorded for each semester. Then I have a student file. I want to be able to using the semester number, get the course codes, which it does, but also the course names. When I link them, the course codes show up fine, however the full names of the course do not, just the first course code name. Any ideas?

This is simple enough if you choose a second field to sort by. However then in the related value-list pop-up the second field is sitting there, and if it's not relevant to the field it could confuse users. Is there any other way? Seems like I run across simple issues/problems and FM's limitations to handle them every few minutes, and I have to say it's a little annoying spending hours trying to figure ways around them. Hi all, again I apologize for posting DevCon issues in this forum. I have suggested to the admin that he create a DevCon forum. If there is one and I'm not finding it, please let me know. Anyway, it turns out there's another resort adjacent to the Desert Ridge, called the Marriott Canyon Villas. I was told by someone at the resort that it's about 10 minute walking distance from the conference rooms. All of my db experience is with MS Access (a number of years ago). A few weeks ago I downloaded the FM7 demo and I'm trying to decide if it's worth the price. My initial reaction is that FM is lame compared to MS Access but there's a good chance I'm just not familiar enough with FM. Of course, I'm a Mac-only guy now so Access isn't an option. Is FM as powerful as Access? Has anyone else made the transition with success/satisfaction?

We have a large investment in FileMaker (currently 5x-6x and Server 5x). Due to the age of our databases, many have repeating fields. How does FM 7 handle these? Does it simply move them into a table or will we have to deal with them before conveting to 7? I have a question regarding records. Currently, our database integrates a list of new users every year, and we have a list of records that we have to update periodically. The developer before me had made this database, without thinking of updates in the future to the list of users. Currently, we import a file that has, among many other attributes, a transaction flag attribute: "A", "D", or "U". "A" means to Add the customer, "D" means to delete the customer, and "U" means update the customer information. I had just migrated to Filemaker Pro 7 and is using network share off a dedicated client. What do you guys & gals do to backup the local database ? I had just used up my complimentary support with FM and they say they dont support command lines or batch files. I basically want to use the scheduler to shutdown FM, run a scheduled backup from my backup exec server and start it first thing in the morning. I purchase lists of businesses (name, phone, address, etc...) and import them into a FM 6 file. Each list has a SIC and SIC_Name for each business. However, there are some businesses on the list (like city governments, Post Offices, public schools, churches, etc...) that I want to delete or just not import. I have a FM 6 database "SIC_Delete" containing the SIC and SIC_Name for the records I don't want. How do I use "SIC_Delete" as a filter to delete these records, or just not import them in the beginning? The SIC field contains eight digits; however, the first four are the only ones that matter. Firstly, I tried searching on here, but honestly, it's a miserable setup to find anything, so sorry about the possible double post... I'm trying to search a timecard table that includes a timecard number, producer(name) and a date weekending field. My script selects all records, sorts by date/name, then goes into find mode. After typing a name to search for, it displays the results. The problem is, that the results will only be displayed in ascending timecard number order. I am trying to use php on one system to connect to another system that has ODBC sharing enabled. It seems that either the parameters I pass into odbc_connect (a php function) is incorrect or I don't have ODBC correctly enabled (can u just go to Edit->Sharing to enable ODBC? ... or do I need to install an additional ODBC driver?). Having problems with windows XP. I am having a problem with my solution in Windows XP but not in other windows environments. Every time I run a find on a windows XP box the system hangs. If I do the same in Win 2000 or Win 98 or Apple OSX there is no such problem.

Hi All, I'm new here so aplogies for the dim-wit question, I've been searching the net looking for my answers and have so far been unsuccesfull. I am trying to set up a version of FM7 client to run on a G4 running OSX (Panther). What I want to do is allow someone to FTP a new database up to it and for it to be hosted. In order for this to happen they will need to close the DB first, FTP it up and reopen it. I have the FTP server working but can't find any way of allow a remote user to close/open databases. I had posted a similar question under relationships, but this is a broad question, so I think it's appropriate in this section of the forum. I have a table of people, for a fundraising db, and a table of events. Each event needs to be tied to a person, as it contains their payment info, etc. There need to be many events per person. Is this possible? I have done some searching around this forum and on a few other sites and I have come up empty handed. My attempt went something like this: Make graphic into button. Make popup field and place under graphic. Make value list for field. Make button select popup field when clicked. I have a find mode problem. I have created a database to store collectors cards. If the user clicks on the find button it will bring them to a find layout and I run a script for them to do their search. The problem I am running into is I want the search for one field to be constrained only to what they pick. Example I have a field called series and I have a drop down menu so they can pick the series. The user can also add a series that is not in the database. If the user picks 'series 1' it will pull all the series 1 and series 11,12,13,14,15,&16 cards. Can more than one instance of filemaker be open in windows and filemaker 7.0 ? I would like to open two instances of filemaker, one for each project I wrote. The customer would be able to close one with the "Exit Application" script easily without affecting the other. Customer could switch between them with ALT-TAB easily. Much more effective than worrying about switching between windows, or leaving pieces of a project open when it should have closed. Any ideas? Thanks. Joseph

Hey all, I'm trying to do something very simple, but can't figure it out from the documentation. In a project folder, I have a FM db and a folder containing images. The db fields includes "image" (a container) and "image_path" (text). The images were imported as references. When I copy the project folder over to another computer, it breaks, naturally, because the stored reference path changes from "file://Drive 1/etc/project/images/picture.tiff" to "file://Drive 2/etc2/project/images/picture.tiff". If my portal shows 10 records, how can I see the next or "11" etc. record and then go back up if I wanted too? I'm pulling my hair out on this one. "Customer doesn't like the look of the stock scroll bar, want's it to look like my "os-x aqua" that my layouts are designed as. If anyone can land a hand, I sure would like to end the madness. Thanks

I have 2 global values displayed as fields on a layout. They are dates that bracket a period of interest. Also on the layout is a calculation based on the two dates entered by the user and stored as the global values I just mentioned. Finally there is a button that when clicked calls a script that exports certain fields from all the records that were found based on the calculated field which was based on the dates. When this layout loads after opening the file, it has 2 dates stored in it. I'm wondering how I can get FM to display blank fields or a question mark instead of the dates '5/1/04' and '5/31/04.' I have set up a script to obatin page number so on a printout I could have "Page 1 of 10". The script is like this: Enter Preview Mode [] Go to Record/Request/Page [Last] Set Field ["Page Number", "Status(CurrentPageNumber)"] Go to Record/Request/Page [First] Exit Script Now the problem is that when I print sometimes I get "Page 34 of 30" which is clearly wrong. Does anyone know what is happening?? If it helps, or explains it, I use Sub-Summary Parts and a Trailing Grand Total.

I am trying to make a field automatically extend to the next page in Preview Mode if there is text in the field that is too long to display on one page. I have tried selecting "Allow part to break across page boundaries" option in the "Part Setup..." window, but that doesn't work. It still won't display the information that is too long for one page on a next page. The page has a header and a footer that I want on every page. Thanks.

My spreadsheet report is visible in Browse and Preview modes. When I try to print this report only half the page prints in landscape. When I check my print preview only half the spreadsheet is visible. If I go to page set up and select landscape to print the portal expands in Layout mode to include all the data I need to print. When I then go back to print preview only half the records show up and this is how it prints. This never happened in version 6. Help! does anyone know how I can print my report?

Hi guys, To back up fmserver we have found that we have to use the command "fmserver pause" before the backup will commence. Once backup is finished we then have to use the command "fmserver resume". How do you guys manage your backups? Been thinking that perhaps we have to create a DOS script to do this and have it execute at say 2am? Sorry - I am running FM6, Server 5.5 and XP for this question

If a user clicks the Cancel button in the Status area during a scripted Find (paused), is there any way to have the script take him to a different/specific layout instead of dumping him in an inappropriate place? (And yes, I want to keep the Status area "live" in this situation.) This script traverses two diff layouts, and the problem arises if the user cancels on the 2d one--which has only merge fields and no navigation options (other than a "cancel everything, go home, and start over" button). I'd rather be able to take them back one step/layout since it usually means that the found set they got isn't what they wanted/expected. Thanks, RDecker

All I want to be able to do is to import/export simple chemical formula - which involves the use of super/subscripts. Filemaker appears to not be in the mood to play nice. If I take a set of test formula and export using the xml option, all super/subscript information is lost. Then again, I already have a field where the formula are formatted using HTML (useful when generating web pages). I can export them, convert the < and > to < and > so that the tags are proper but FM refuses to import them - it knows nothing about <sub> or <sup> from what I can tell. Our databases are hosted on FileMaker 5.5 et we use there with Citrix Metaframe XP. With a Win client it works pretty well but it doesn't work with a Linux Citrix client. All others applications works with this Linux Citrix client, only FileMaker causes problems. Are there someone try this settings before? Thx.

I'm a newbie using trial version to see if I can replace Paradox. I'm creating a complex directory which includes several fields which are empty for some records. If the field is empty, I want to hide the field name (which seems to end up as just text on the layout, rather than attached to the field itself). I thought "slide" would work but it just controls what is in the field boundry. Anybody know how to do this? an example would be "Business Tel" followed by the Btel field. Hi, My company is having a lot of problems with FMP 4.1 and sharing databases via TCP-IP Scenario that works. - OS 9.1 user hosts dbase and Jaguar/panther users seem to be able to view and use dbase most of the time Scenario that does not work - OS X (.2 or .3) host dbase and 9.1 guests are unable to access the dbase. Is there any way around this hosting issue with OS X (.2 or .3) and 9.1 users/ What solutions are there? Use FM server or perhaps upgrade all users to a newer version of FM (money is a problem)? I want to enable a pop-up menu when a text field has a particular value. The only way i could sort-of get this to work was by creating a calculation field which would have a simple if statement. The problem is i cannot change the value of the pop-up menu since it is a calculation field it is stuck on the default value of the pop-up menu. Does anyone know another way to do this? One way could be if a script would run when the condition was met in the calculation field (the cal field would be separate from the pop-up menu. can we run a script in a cal field?). suggestions are welcome.

Hi guys, I'm just wanting some different ideas to deal with pebcak. I have a user who insists she is creating a new record and losing her data. Everytime I stand behind her it works fine. No one else is having this problem. Truth be told we did have a server crash and stupid filemaker opened up a backed up copy unbeknownst to us (what a drama). Anyway, the only conclusion that I can come up with is it's a pebcak and the user is in find mode. I've run some searches but can't seem to find an answer to my question. Here's the deal... Is there any way to have a FMP 6 database open an external MP3 file and play it in Windows Media Player (this is all under Win XP)? What I want to know is if i up the ram on a computer from 64mg to whatever, will it increase the time it takes to pull up a pop up menu. I have a multi-site DB with about 10 users running from FM server 5.5. The link between the locations is not even close to being maxed out. The only task the server preforms is FM Server 5.5. And I do not have the same issue at the same site. The items in the pop-up are indexed and so is the field itself.

The Send Apple Events in FM5 no longer work in FM6 with MS Office 2004 on a G4 Mac running OSX 10.3.4 Example: Send Apple Event - Script text : run("'M196 SPC'!get_cd_data","FALSE") This runs an excel macro directly from FM and automatically creates charts in excel on FM5 with Excel 97 but not on FM6 with Office 2004 There are major differences between these applications and OS systems. Has anyone found an answer to this problem. It seems a backward step to add a button to Excel to run the script. Do I need to learn XML and run macros in .xlm format ?

I have a product, quantity, fee, and total cost (this is a calculation). When I remove the product and quantity the total cost now becomes $0.00. Which is not totally wrong. The user cannot alter the fee. Having removed the product and quantity and if I were to put a number in the quantity, still having no product, it is giving me a correct price of the product that was last chosen. What I want, i know you cant always get what you want,is to have a total cost of $0.00 not to show up when the fields have been erased. It shows up on my receipt cluttering it up.
