  2. Howdy, Is there a way in FM7 or FM7dev to temporarily bold/highlight keywords in found records after a search? Example: if a have a bunch of recipes and I perform a find for "onion", on all the found records containing "onion" can the word "onion" be bolded temporarily to help the user find the word? I've never been able to imagine how to implement this request so have worked around it, but I thought I'd ask you pros -- maybe I'm overlooking a basic feature.   5. This worked in FM 6 but it just refuses to in FM 7.02 When I do a find on a Calculation Field, using > or < the find comes back with no matches found or the wrong results (>3 would give you 1,2,3). Is this a new feature that I overlooked? This application is running on FM server 7.

What's the best/most efficient means of finding the next highest number (i.e., highest existing value + 1) in a DB for which not all records have a value in the given field (which I'll call #Fld)? i.e., this is not a serial number; Of thousands of records, only a few dozen will have a number assigned in #Fld.   10. I've created a DB for our school that stores student files. In order to keep the DB as streamlined as possible, I've stored the various student files as references. Here's the problem: the folder that contains the actual files is a shared folder on a network. When users log onto the DB I've created, and try to open the referenced file, they get a 'file not found error.' The only work around I've found is to tell the users to make sure they've logged onto the network and made a connection to the folder in question.   11. We have a database of clinical sites and patients. Some clinical sites have two locations (for instance the UCLA site has two different locations). When a patient is accepted into our clinical study at a site with two locations they are assigned to one of the two locations.   15. I created a FileMaker solution for tracking and scheduling of jobs to equipment. It works well. However, the company recently purchased an SQL server and a heavy application that creates job tickets, inventory, shipping and data collection. The scheduling portion of it stinks! They would like to continue to use the FileMaker solution for shceduling.   16. I have been using Filemaker Pro v3 since it was first introduced in 1995. It does everything I need so I have not felt the need to upgrade. I have installed it in successive computers under Win 95, Win98 and now WinXP. It has performed well under all windows versions untill the last few weeks.   18. In the not-so-distant future of our database, we are going to try to make some changes. One of them is changing a field. It is a key value that is used to relate the Customer to MANY different files throughout the system. The key is stored on one file, and relationships tie in through all the files via this one field. The previous developer used a system that created this field via an increasing index, and what we want to do is change this field to be representative of the main key(such as a customer ID).     Need a lil help here, I am using a button to call a new window (and create a related record) for the user to enter data into, the data entry window has 2 buttons, 1 to save the data and close the window, the other to cancel the data entry (delete the created record) and close the window. I have realised that an errant mouse click will leave the data entry window open but hidden behind the main window, is there a way to keep the focus on the data entry window until the save or cancel buttons are pressed? Last week the database crashed because of a virus and I replaced the entire database (all primary and related files) with a backup copy. The new version appears fine, except the scroll wheels on both computers' mice no longer scroll between records.   27. Ok I have two tables, one with courses, which includes course code and descriptions, and one with coursePerSemester, which includes the courses that are recorded for each semester. Then I have a student file. I want to be able to using the semester number, get the course codes, which it does, but also the course names. However then in the related value-list pop-up the second field is sitting there, and if it's not relevant to the field it could confuse users. Is there any other way?   36. All of my db experience is with MS Access (a number of years ago). A few weeks ago I downloaded the FM7 demo and I'm trying to decide if it's worth the price. My initial reaction is that FM is lame compared to MS Access but there's a good chance I'm just not familiar enough with FM. Of course, I'm a Mac-only guy now so Access isn't an option. Is FM as powerful as Access? Has anyone else made the transition with success/satisfaction?

I had just used up my complimentary support with FM and they say they dont support command lines or batch files.   42. I purchase lists of businesses (name, phone, address, etc...) and import them into a FM 6 file. Each list has a SIC and SIC_Name for each business. However, there are some businesses on the list (like city governments, Post Offices, public schools, churches, etc...) that I want to delete or just not import. I have a FM 6 database "SIC_Delete" containing the SIC and SIC_Name for the records I don't want. If the user clicks on the find button it will bring them to a find layout and I run a script for them to do their search. The problem I am running into is I want the search for one field to be constrained only to what they pick. Example I have a field called series and I have a drop down menu so they can pick the series. The user can also add a series that is not in the database. If the user picks 'series 1' it will pull all the series 1 and series 11,12,13,14,15,&16 cards.   60. Can more than one instance of filemaker be open in windows and filemaker 7.0 ? I would like to open two instances of filemaker, one for each project I wrote. The customer would be able to close one with the "Exit Application" script easily without affecting the other. Customer could switch between them with ALT-TAB easily.   61. Hey all, I'm trying to do something very simple, but can't figure it out from the documentation. In a project folder, I have a FM db and a folder containing images. The db fields includes "image" (a container) and "image_path" (text). The images were imported as references. When I copy the project folder over to another computer, it breaks, naturally, because the stored reference path changes from "file://Drive 1/etc/project/images/picture.tiff" to "file://Drive 2/etc2/project/images/picture.tiff". If my portal shows 10 records, how can I see the next or "11" etc. record and then go back up if I wanted too? I'm pulling my hair out on this one.   65. I have 2 global values displayed as fields on a layout. They are dates that bracket a period of interest. Also on the layout is a calculation based on the two dates entered by the user and stored as the global values I just mentioned. Finally there is a button that when clicked calls a script that exports certain fields from all the records that were found based on the calculated field which was based on the dates. When this layout loads after opening the file, it has 2 dates stored in it. I'm wondering how I can get FM to display blank fields or a question mark instead of the dates '5/1/04' and '5/31/04.'   67. I have set up a script to obatin page number so on a printout I could have "Page 1 of 10". The script is like this: Enter Preview Mode [] Go to Record/Request/Page [Last] Set Field ["Page Number", "Status(CurrentPageNumber)"] Go to Record/Request/Page [First] Exit Script Now the problem is that when I print sometimes I get "Page 34 of 30" which is clearly wrong.   68. I am trying to make a field automatically extend to the next page in Preview Mode if there is text in the field that is too long to display on one page. I have tried selecting "Allow part to break across page boundaries" option in the "Part Setup..." window, but that doesn't work.   70. My spreadsheet report is visible in Browse and Preview modes. When I try to print this report only half the page prints in landscape. When I check my print preview only half the spreadsheet is visible. If I go to page set up and select landscape to print the portal expands in Layout mode to include all the data I need to print. When I then go back to print preview only half the records show up and this is how it prints. This never happened in version 6. Help! does anyone know how I can print my report?

Once backup is finished we then have to use the command "fmserver resume". How do you guys manage your backups? If a user clicks the Cancel button in the Status area during a scripted Find (paused), is there any way to have the script take him to a different/specific layout instead of dumping him in an inappropriate place? (And yes, I want to keep the Status area "live" in this situation.) This script traverses two diff layouts, and the problem arises if the user cancels on the 2d one--which has only merge fields and no navigation options (other than a "cancel everything, go home, and start over" button).   73. All I want to be able to do is to import/export simple chemical formula - which involves the use of super/subscripts. Filemaker appears to not be in the mood to play nice. If I take a set of test formula and export using the xml option, all super/subscript information is lost. Then again, I already have a field where the formula are formatted using HTML (useful when generating web pages). I can export them, convert the &lt; and &gt; to < and > so that the tags are proper but FM refuses to import them - it knows nothing about <sub> or <sup> from what I can tell.     I'm a newbie using trial version to see if I can replace Paradox. I'm creating a complex directory which includes several fields which are empty for some records. If the field is empty, I want to hide the field name (which seems to end up as just text on the layout, rather than attached to the field itself). I thought "slide" would work but it just controls what is in the field boundry. Anybody know how to do this? an example would be "Business Tel" followed by the Btel field. Hi, My company is having a lot of problems with FMP 4.1 and sharing databases via TCP-IP Scenario that works. - OS 9.1 user hosts dbase and Jaguar/panther users seem to be able to view and use dbase most of the time Scenario that does not work - OS X (.2 or .3) host dbase and 9.1 guests are unable to access the dbase. Is there any way around this hosting issue with OS X (.2 or .3) and 9.1 users/ What solutions are there? Use FM server or perhaps upgrade all users to a newer version of FM (money is a problem)? The only way i could sort-of get this to work was by creating a calculation field which would have a simple if statement. The problem is i cannot change the value of the pop-up menu since it is a calculation field it is stuck on the default value of the pop-up menu. Does anyone know another way to do this?   92. Hi guys, I'm just wanting some different ideas to deal with pebcak. I have a user who insists she is creating a new record and losing her data. Everytime I stand behind her it works fine. No one else is having this problem. Truth be told we did have a server crash and stupid filemaker opened up a backed up copy unbeknownst to us (what a drama).     What I want to know is if i up the ram on a computer from 64mg to whatever, will it increase the time it takes to pull up a pop up menu. I have a multi-site DB with about 10 users running from FM server 5.5. The link between the locations is not even close to being maxed out. The only task the server preforms is FM Server 5.5. And I do not have the same issue at the same site. The items in the pop-up are indexed and so is the field itself.

  98. I have a product, quantity, fee, and total cost (this is a calculation). When I remove the product and quantity the total cost now becomes $0.00. Which is not totally wrong. The user cannot alter the fee. Having removed the product and quantity and if I were to put a number in the quantity, still having no product, it is giving me a correct price of the product that was last chosen. What I want, i know you cant always get what you want,is to have a total cost of $0.00 not to show up when the fields have been erased. It shows up on my receipt cluttering it up.
