I know how it works for the intranet or workgroup. But i couldnt understand how it works with the complete internet solutions for example a e-commerce project. Could any one give me an explanation. Did anyone setup the Filemaker Pro unlimited with webserver connector to IIS or Apache. How do i develop web applicaitons with it. I'm a building contractor and have developed a database in Excel that tracks employee/customer/material and subcontractor costs. For any of you familiar with XL, I am wondering if FM could do a similar job for me. I used FM once to create a membership database a couple years ago and it worked great for that. With the use of some 'very complicated' formulas and PivotTables I am able to sort data according to many criteria. Like total hours all employees spent on any particular job, hours a given employee has spent on a job, total hours for all employees and all jobs, etc. I'm also able to use formulas to invoice customers for time/materials/subs with Profit and …

Hay all, Having a feature problem in osX/9 here. Its really neat to drag a pic from safari to a container field in FM pro (my dad loves it). The problem is that the picture gets larger this way. Same with copy and paste. Is there a trick or app that can help me out on osX?

What are the differences between Web Server Connector and Web Companion for getting a simple data base up and runnin gusing CDML? I know tha WSC will let you balance any thing else to say this is the WSC is better for something very basic. I have a phone sheet, where each record is marked IN, OUT, NEED TO CALL, or CONNECTED. I have a button that will find and sort only the IN, OUT, and NEED TO CALL records. However, one record marked CONNECTED kept appearing after the find and sort (and only one of the records in that category, so I know that I didn't need to rewrite the script or there was a problem with the find). So, I deleted the record a number of times, but now when I sort a "phantom" record appears -- it's blank, and you can't enter the record. It goes away when you delete -- only to reappear when you do a find and sort. Why did this happen and how do I get rid of it? (Also, the file is hosted …

Hi I'm doing a database in Filemaker for a British University. It started life as an Access database, until I discovered that the University IT dept doesn't support Access! So we decided to do it in Filemaker. I have some experience in Access and other RDBMS, but am new to Filemaker. So far I must say, I'm impressed by what it can do. I'm doing most of the development work on my premises which are a couple of hours jounrney from the University. I am looing for a program that will bring a Filemaker window to the front if Filemaker is not the program open. I am using Keepitup to make sure the program is open but incase the program goes to the back I need it in front to work.

I presently have two fields that require information to be entered when any changes are made on a record. The user is required to enter her name and date. User gets a beep when exiting if she did not enter name and date. I use the field validation for this task. It works fine until I make more changes on a later date. My fields are validated from earlier editions, and the user gets no beep. I want the name and date fields to be updated each time editions are made. The simple "update - yes or no" message is okay. Is it posible to assign an Alpha-numeric bar-code to a jpg.? Or that the bar-code changes the jpg #. What I want to do is: take a picture, scan a preprinted bar-code, swipe the card through a slot reader. The bar-code should some how be relating to the letter string of the plasic card. I have an environment where we are looking to upgrade from FMpro 4.1 clients and server. We have about 40 clients accessing shared databases being hosted by Fmpro Server. I need to know if the following scenario is possible before outlaying the money. We want to run FMPRO server 6 and host about 60 databases. We also want to run FMPRO Unlimited on this Computer and run web companion to serve some of the databases via a web interface. We want both WEB clients and Filemaker Pro version 6 clients to access the same databases at the same time. is this possible??

Newbie is right! About 3 days new. Starting with an existing FM database that the users have been keying customer data in for about 6 months (1000+ records). Now we want to link to the corporate AS400 server for this header data. No problem ... the import through ODBC is complete. NOW ... how do I associate the new fields from the ODBC to the existing fields (of the same name and data type) without destroying any existing entries. PLUS I want to key in the FIRST field of this link and let the rest populate based on that FIRST field. WOW! I'll take this in small bites.

Hi all, Does anyone know the background workings of how FileMaker loads records into layouts? i.e. If you have a database with 30 layouts and you bring up 1 record. Does FM populate every field on all 30 layouts with the data for that 1 record, or, does FM just populate the data in the current layout, then as you change to another layout it populates the fields in that layout? You may have seen another post of mine about speed problems I'm having with one of my databases, I'm just trying out different ideas to resolve this. Hi, all, I'm using FMPro 5 for windows. I recently upgraded my monitor to a large size and am running the display at 1600x1200. Unfortunately, FMPro now displays some text - particularly field lists and import/export boxes with field lists - in type so miniscule I cannot read it. I don't have this problem with most other apps, or at least not so severe. I even reduced the monitor resolution but it didn't really do a lot of good. For the moment, I'm doing my FMPro import/export work on my laptop, but that's not always convenient. Is there any workaround involving FMPro? Thanks for any help. Ed

I have to do a data base that will indicate a resume of all the bills sent a client (file resume). The existing file are the bills(file Bills). The thing is that in the resume file, there is a date and I need to see all the bills up that particular date. The relationship between the 2 are the "client name". I have a field in the bills file that copies the resume's date. If I could just found a way to indexed that field, I could probably manage my relationship. Any ideas Thanks

Ok.. as I start to slide down the slope into FM I'd like to get into good habits. Is there an industry standard system for naming databases, fields, scripts, code etc etc that I should get into the habit of using to make me more user friendly in the future?

Can script buttons be placed on the vertical "status area" tool bar on the left hand side of the display? I just need some buttons to always be available no matter what page of my 10 page report I'm on. These buttons are for quick navigation to other areas of my report so any method that would do this is appreciated.

On sub records such as detail lines is there and advantage to keeping layouts plain vanilla as opposed to color layouts? Don't want to make them all matching and pretty if there is a reason not to. Thanks J

School_project - which contains school_id, project_id, ... and a BUTTON I want the user to be able to click on the BUTTON and have it bring up a layout from another file (pub_quotes) this file contains project_id, pub_cd, qty, etc.. the common field is the project_id - however the two layouts are in different database files (school_proj.fp5 and pub_quotes.fp5). Have FM 4 on a Mac but our office has converted to Networked PC's. We need the data from FM 4 converted to...and looking for the best options. What is the best way to do this? Hi there, firstable FX.php (http://www.iviking.org/) is a really cool project, but how do you get data from your Filemakerdatabase Unlimited Version 6.0 on MacOS X with the fx.php class, while Websecurity is enabled for the hosted Filemakerdatabase on another Server ? If it's disabled everything goes fine, don't know what to do. Ok here we go, I am still new to filemaker. I have 3 or 4 layouts that i have created. Each layout has a number of fields, but in each layout there is a job# field. Now data is being inported from a number of MS Access databases by OBDC, to these different layouts. now I would like to have a new layout which has the job# fields with all the fields from the other layouts with the same job#. Hi! I have a problem with FileMaker running on Windows 2000: it takes more than 5 minutes to launch. It happens on two different machines, having FM v5 and v6, whereas it doesn't happen on other computers on our network. Anyone with a similar experience can help?

We are currently using FM 4.1 (on a Mac 9.2), mostly serving pages over the web. We would like to upgrade to version 6 running on 10.2. We have around 50 login per 24 hours. At present we share some of the databases (via filesharing with 3 or 4 windows clients and serve from the same machine over the web). Is it possible to install FileMaker Unlimited on various clients (mac and windows - max 5), and still serve them over the web, or would we be better off with FM server.

My business runs on an app I wrote with Dataease (Dos dinasaur). Hundreds of forms, dozens of relationships, hundreds of queries. Orders, Invoices, Routing, Employees, Inventory, customers, etc.. I enjoy programing and want to start on the right software to replace all of this. How do I decide if FM is adequate (seems most simple) or if I would be better off starting on VB.net or other types of more "programing" languages... any help very much appreciated. I have a strange problem which I hope someone can help with. I have an iMac running Filemaker 5.5 Server and hosting over 50 databases. 10 of these databases are accessed by a 500MHz G4 PowerMac running OSX.2 and FileMaker 6 unlimited. This then serves these databases to the web using FM Web publishing. Hi all, I have a problem: 1 server 10 databases Databases needs to be shared on the web - so am running FMPro Unlimited Databases now also needs to be shared through the company for users who connect using FMPro. I know the users can connect to the databases using FMPro if I set the databases to be multi-user but from what I understand, Multi-user databases on FMPro Unlimited will oly deal with one request at a time, therefor making FMP Server the better option. But as I said I only have 1 server! Is it possible to run FMP Unlimited AND FMP Server on the same machine serving the same databases? Many Thanks Ed.

I have 200+ clients accessing the FMServer with my app. Currently they get there by selecting the host by IP address. All our IP addresses are about to change. Will it work if I have everyone shift to the server name vice the IP address? This is FM 3.0 running on a W2K server.

First - whoever reads this and ponders a solution let me thank you in advance. This may be so simple I can't see the forest for the trees but ...... In my database for tracking fleet repairs when a job has been completed I need to eliminate it (omit) from the active database and export (I think) to another file. The problem is when I do this it always overwrites the "storage" file. I don't want to replace these old files but rather append them to the old file for future recall. I want to set up a REPEATING (25) Field [sITE] so that it is a BUTTON. Clicking on a specific Repetition enters a TEXT Value that was first inputted into anotherFiled [sITE NAME]. EG. SITE NAME is bhp; the Repetitions in the SITE field are persons names; If i click on say the 4th, 9th and 18th REPETITIONS of the SITE Field, rather that having to manually enter the SITE NAME (bhp in this case) into the 4th, 9th and 18th Repetitions , i want to have this value entered AUTOMATICALLY into only the repetitions i click on. This is about the simplest, yet oddest question I've had so far. My boss was desiging a layout on his laptop for fun, he's running WinXP Pro on it, with FMP 6. I also have FMP 6, and I have windows 2000 on my desktop, and WinXP Home on my laptop. On his computer, the layout that he's created, when you enter text into a text field and want to carry to the next line, it exits the field instead of entering a new line. The same file on both my machines enter new lines. Is this a setting that I can change somewhere? I looked in the application preferences, and nothing jumped out at me. Thanks!

I inherited a Database made in the original Filemaker that's now 10 years old. I'm getting it relationalized into Clients and Transactions. Over the years there have been multiple records entered for the same client (i.e. each transaction duplicated most of the client info). When there are 5 or 6 records for the same client I want to combine them into one record (just as Address Book lets you merge records). Hello all: We recently put a FM database on our OSX Server machine (G4 350 OS 10.2 Server). Right now, we are just using FM Pro 5.5 and I have Unlimited on its way. The server backs up at 8PM on Friday night. I have a couple of questions. 1. We use Retrospect Backup. My feeling is that I would have to close FM while the backup is occuring. But we also run Now-up-to-Date & Contact to serve calendars, and that does not have to be restarted. Will I have to close FM when the backup is happening? 2. If I do close it, does anyone know of an Applescript or a third party activator (or maybe some sort of OS10 Server feature) that will open up the FM files …

I'm having a problem with versioning. I've made a few databases that get used in different projects. For example, there's one that records specific geologic information about an area. At any given time there are multiple copies of the database being used by different people who are recording data for different counties. When it's time to make some revisions on the database, however, I've got the problem of there being multiple copies. I don't want to implement the same changes in them all, so what should I do? how do i remove the header from the pages that i print out?

CTRL+N seems inconvenient for data entry navigation to a new record. It's simple enough to make a button with a script, but I have not been able configure a button so it could be tabbed to and "pressed" with ENTER and I prefer to avoid the use of the mouse for data entry. Is there, perhaps, a way to make a button "pressable" with ALT+[first letter of the button label]? Or, more to the point, what is the cleanest way to allow data entry navigation to a new record without the use of the mouse or CTRL+N?

Been using 5.5 with OSX & 512 on a titanium. Been incredibly successful for about a month then all of a sudden my favorite file claims to be damaged and suggests I use recover to open it. I use recover which runs fine and save it on the desktop and but when I go to open it Filemaker unexpectedly quits everytime. I never get to even open the file...any ideas? Chris

Probably a basic question but I can't seem to find the answer. If I have 50 fields in a layout in rows and columns... What is the easiest way to make them all the exact size. I know I can do them one at time using object size but when I select them all and try it, it forces them all in an area of the size of one field. It seems there has to be a faster way to do this.

For this report, I want to be able to see each customer, what is the potential sum of all their requests, the actual sum of what has been purchased and the difference between the two. Hi all, This really is a newbie question. We have a filemaker database running At a certain point we decided to put the database on the web , so we got Filemaker unlimited. No I was able to get the database online using instant publishing, but then the buttons in the database do not work. So i realized we need custom web publishing, presuming that the buttons do work this way. Now I have no knowledge of HTML, and even lesser knowledge of CDML. So the manual is a bit complex for me. Is it possible to convert File Maker Pro files on a File Maker Server without actually opening the files?

I've got a site setup now that is using the FMU 5 version of WSC on the OLD OS X Server v1.2 ( NOT 10.2 ). And it's setup with Apache and SSL and it's VERY stable. I'm then using Server 5.5 on OS X 10.2 (client) and haev 2 older iMacs connecting to that, one runs OS X 10.2 and FileMaker 6 STD and basically just sends and checks email, and the other iMac runs OS 9 and FMU 5.0 My question is this, if I bought FMU 6 and ran it on an additional OS X box would the old WSC be able to connect to it, and properly load balance with the OS9 mac? I'm using FileMaker Pro to compile a dictionary of a language. Part of my work requires that I index words into groups of "families." Conceptually, this just involves giving each member of a group a shared, unique identifier. But what baffles me in FMP is how to access non-contiguous records when one is at a given record. In forms view, is there any way to access (and edit) other records while remaining on the record one is on, i.e., is there no way to edit two non-contiguous records simultaneously? Ideally, what I'd like to be able to do is split my screen-space in two and be able to access two records independently of the other, and edit each on the basis of the content…

Hi,everyone. I'm using inserted bitmap images that are edited and viewed by the user (doctors making treatment notes with a Tablet PC). Currently the image is selected by the user followed by the Microsoft paint program opening the object for editing in a new window. I'm wondering if there is a similar drawing program that will allow the user to edit the image within the confines of the container field. I'm would also appreciate any suggestions regarding incorporating Tablet PC use with the Filemaker database.

A small database enclosed that 3 fields do not show up in Preview mode or print. If you look at record 14 and look at the field (lower right) "Plate information", the data shows in Browse but not the others mentioned. I think I checked the obvious, text box, relationships, field format, but the data disappears. Any idea what I am missing? customer data.zip

Hi All, I'm running 3.0 on W2k boxes. I have a contacts database that is about 10 years old and has about 16,000 records. I don't think FMP was relational when this thing was originally built so using a related file was not even possible then and I don't want to try to convert it into one now. We have this big text field where the contact notes are kept. To keep users from having to do a lot of scrolling, our practice has been to add new notes to the TOP of the list. In a "Company Name field", I want to make sue the field is exited by a "Tab" and not by a "Carriage Return". I was looking through a file of mine the other day and found carriage returns everywhere, even it the State field. The only field I want to allow a carriage return is the "Notes" field. Thanks, Bill

I seen several references to the problem, on several different forums and bbs, but never a solution or even a decent workaround. In Layout Mode, any attempt to move a field brings up the 'duplicate' dialogue box. OK, you can duplicate the field and remove the original but that's a lot of extra work. And, adding insult to injury, it seems you can only duplicate in one direction at a time ('move' the field right and down results in duplicating the field to the right. Then you have to duplicate it again -- down). Has anyone found a key combination that results in actually MOVING the field? Abbe

Please help, I have filemaker pro 5.5 running on a Mac OS X system and when I go to view->Toolbars it is "greyed" out. I know this is probably a simple problem, but I am a newbie to filemaker 5.5. Thank you for any help.

I am running a shared databse using fmp5 but not the server version. Sometimes when a client computer is trying to connect to the entrance file "menu" at startup, it displays a message as follows: "Cannot connect to "menu" because host is overloaded." I have searched for information on the meaning of this message but have failed to find any. If I restart the server computer, and try again it works fine. The server is an eMac running OS9.2 and is very lightly loaded. Thanks for any help that can be given. Gary

I am trying to find information on how to build a report from Summary Fields. I am presently manually entering this information from a FM database to Excel and pulling the Excel file in as an Object. The summary fields are monthly Purchase Request totals. I prefer to do this report in FM, but keeping it in Excel is an option as long as it enters the information automatically. I've looked into ODBC, but it does not recommend using summary fields. Any advice on this is appreciated!

Hi, I have searching around in the newsgroups and various forums and haven't been able to find the answer I am looking for. I have filemaker unlimited 5.5 running on a windows 2000 pro computer with the apache web connector running on an rh7.1 linux apache webserver. The linux server has the public ip address and works great sending requests to the unlimited computer with the lan address using instant web publishing. I have created custom CDML/HTML pages that work great on the LAN. I am not sure however how to configure the custom pages with the web connector. Hi, Is there any way to run FM scripts automatically at certain times of a day? To be more specific, we want to import data from a text file which is updated continuously. we want to have a process running to check the text file once every hour and import new records into FM. Hi everybody, I've been playing around with filemaker pro 5.5 unlimited and his web connector. I've been able to get it work on Windows XP Pro but on Linux it's giving me a hard time. Hi, I am running Filemaker Pro 6 Unlimited on Win 2000, with Web Connector installed on a separate computer running Redhat Linux. I am able to access the config page (http://linuxcomputer/FMPro?Config) and from there I can see the list of databases I have shared through Web Companion. On the Win2000 machine, I can acess the database using the local web browser with URL "http://localhost", and that shows the built-in index page. I can also connect directly to the Win2000 machine through a remote web browser using "http://win2000machine/". I thought I had found a bug, but it happens in version 5, 5.5 & 6 so I'm convinced it must be a "feature". Here is what happened. I was very carefully cleaning up a database that has way to many fields that are not being used. When I finished, I noticed that buttons have been removed from ALL the layouts in that file. Apparently Filemaker doesn't distinguish layout objects beyond their labels. If a button label matchs a field name, and the field is deleted (from the define fields dialog), so are all buttons that happen to match the name of the field that's being deleted! Help! I am looking for a way to either export multiple associate text strings from a single text field that are associated with a unique contact Id number. I the past I have used a single field to first put in a date of communication with a person then the call notes associated with that date. Over time of course this single text field has become rather bulky, plus I can not do simple searches in the field for specific dates or ranges of dates. What I am thinking now is that I should have a relational database called Call Logg which has a relation to the unique contact id number and fields such as date of the call, time, call notes, and other important information. …

I'm running a relation db set on 5.5. Here's my challenge: the db currently has a main user record and a separate db for email templates. In the user db, there's a tool for selecting an email subject line, which then populates with the email template and allows a SendMail function. I would like to expand these templates and separate them into categores with this functionality in mind: I'd first select the category, which would then prompt for templates within that category, and I'd select from there before sending. Any tips?

I am a volunteer developing a data base for a non-profit. I use a Mac for all my work, but have to port the files to a PC for them. I find that many of the colors appear much darker on their PCs than they do on my Mac, and buttons that are invisible on the Mac appear as filled with white on the PC. Hi! Got a weird problem. we use a database that normally work really fine and fast. Somehow from time to time it will become really slow up to the point of after having click on a field I have a delay of 2 to 3 seconds (I'm on a eMac). If I quit all software and force quit classic) the problem go away. Any idea is welcome as this is driving me nuts

Hi, I have to load FMP 5.5 on about 230 machines in our school. First I want to set it up properly on my machine. I put the Troi plug-ins in our browser's plug-in folder, but where am I supposed to put the file called Web Magnet? Does it go in my System Folder somewhere. We are using iMacs running OS 9.2.2. Is there a simple way to transfer similar forms/ layouts from one copy of a database to another without having to do it all manually (i.e. copying and pasting and tweaking everything by hand)?

Hello everyone...new to the forum and fairly new to FMP 6.0. I've tried searching the net and have read many books (including FMP Bible) and I'm alittle confused. I'm trying to create a "solution" that would have a MENU page, and then multiple databases that are accessed by the Menu. I tried putting everything in one database and use multiple layouts but that doesn't work. I guess I need to build multiple .fp5 files, but I can't figure out a script to call them up maximized. I'm sorting records by last name and then first name and seem to be getting wierd results. When I sort last name of St. John it shows up in the J's. Likewise with all names with two names such as Von Kampen. How do I need to enter these last names to sort correctly? Thanks for any help.

We have a layout to insert and link a document into FMP. It will display fine when most operating systems have inserted it except when it was inserted from a Windows 2000. Then only a top quarter of the document will display. ANY ideas what could solve this problem?:???

following situation: since a couple of months a win2k with fmp unlimited is sharing 3 databases - during the last week some users started working with the database logging into the system with winXP/explorer 6 causing the database to crash after testing to submit or edit records with opera everything works fine and the server keeps on running general: does an increase of ram on the server side solve this problem (1st suggestion, there are only 128 mb installed) secondly: is this really a msXP and or an explorer vers 6 specific problem? harald

using latest version of filemaker, + OSX, randomly, on both a g4 tower and ti-book, when the machine is idle for a long period of time, (or on the ti, when it goes to sleep and is reawakened), filemaker crashes, w/no error number. just a general unexpected quit. doesn't happen every time, has only happened a handful of times, but is important that it doesn't do this in the future! thanks in advance for any support, k.

Hi, This is what happened: While i selected "All" objects in a layout to paste them elsewhere, filemaker pro(4.1) crashes and closes. Now i enter the file and the Layout Menu gives me double entries of a layout and works weirdly and very confusing! I tried to delete the layout but it remains there duplicating another layout! Weird huh? What can i do? Re-design ALL layouts again? :-( Any IDEAS?
