FileMaker Legacy fp3 and fp5

I have a solution working as follows: on the server computer - windows 2000 server , filemaker server and the filemaker files; on the client computers - windows 2000 Pro and Filemaker Pro. This solution should work on the internet and I'm not sure what I need to do. Clients should be able to read on-line information from the filemaker solution that I already have. Is it possible to use the same server I already have to be the web server ? If I can, should I install filemaker Unlimited on the server computer? If not what should I do to use FM Unlimitted for this solution ? Thanks, LVA

I am a beginner, so please be gentle. I'm on a MAC using OSX. I have just started using filemaker 5 and have run into this problem. When I want to move a field in the layout mode, I click on the field and drag it to the desired position. Unfortunately what happens is the field is duplicated and the 'specify field' window pops up. The only way I can move a field in the layout is with the arrow keys. I'm sure this isn't normal, can anyone help me. I just want to move fields around. Thanks Gary

I would like to be able to have the field background be dependent on the numerical value in the field for example if the value was >90 the field background would turn red...if vaule >80 background=blue...

OK, I don't know quite what category this falls into, so I'll put it here in the general section. I guess you'd call it a navigation problem. I want users to go to a layout based on a field value. So on layout number #1 they enter VarA as X or Y. They click a button that takes them to layout #2 if VarA is X, or layout #3 if VarA is Y. So far, so good. But suppose they are on layout #2. They then browse to the next record, which has a VarA value of Y. They are still on layout #2, but I'd like them to be on layout #3 since VarA = Y. Is there any way around this? Can I force them to the proper layout, #2 or #3, as they browse, depending on VarA's value? …

hi, i'm a bit unsure whether this is the best forum for this question. we have a single version of filemaker 5.5 and we would like to use it on some more computers. we would like to have access to the filemaker databases on about 4 machines. i don't really think we need fm server - can't really justify that sort of money, so i'm thinking we can just buy 4 versions of Filemaker Pro 6. I saw something about a 5 license version - is that a good way to go? We can get an educational price for our software, and i'm unsure whether we can get that with the 5 license version. I am using Filemaker 3.0 (yes, I know, very old!). We recently experienced a computer crash; afterwards, we noticed that in most of the records in our database, significant amounts of information was missing from fields. It seemed pretty sporadic- couldn't find any pattern to the amount of data missing in each record. It seemed that it was out of the same field for the most part (a repeating field), but there was some information missing out of other fields in some records. My FM5.5 application (12mb size) is used by 8 or 10 users at the same time (no fm server). Every now and then the app freezes and the mousepointer changes into a coffeecup. What does this mean, is there a lag in the network, or are there too many users? Thanks in advance.

I have a few databases that are link to each other and several ppl have access to them. Does anyone know why sometimes the linkage between files is lost? When that happens it'll pop up a dialog saying "[Filename] could not be found. Please locate the file again or click cancel blah blah blah..." Is there a way to prevent that from happening? Thanks!

Therefore I wanted to create a database of just items where each item would be its own record. With this item record would be fields: "Part Number" - (So I can ID the part) "Status" -(where the item is, ON ORDER, IN STOCK, SOLD, ECT) , "PO#" - (So I can look up where it was purchased from for RMA's), "Invoice#" - (So I know who I sold that part to), "Serial#" - (So each part can be tagged with this number" and "Price" ect... I already dealt twice with a file or object corruption problem, without knowing that this was the case (FM quits, Relationships broken or field defs changing... ) Can someone point out the process of corrupted file. How and why does this happen ? How to prevent it ? Is it possible to have a "diagnosis" ?

Is it good design to seperate the user interface from the data in filemaker. This was the case in Access and allowed you to make changes to the UI without have to do imports/exports. At first I did not think this was possible, but as I learn more about scripts, portals, constants and globals I see this is very possible. Hi, I have a text field than contains a string of numbers, some with letters at the end (ex. 1e, 234, 8328v, 743, etc.). Does anyone know a way to sort this list so all the records without letters show up first, then lists the records with the numbers? Here is more info: If I sort acending, it will return in this type of order: 1, 1e, 1v, 2, 2h, 2i,3, etc. I would like it to sort like this: 1, 2, 3 , 1e, 1v, 2h, 2i, etc. Does anyone have an idea of how to do this? Hi, I need to move a group of data from 1 field to another, within the same record. A change was made to a layout, that basically caused data to be entered in the wrong field on about 1000 records of a 3000 record database. Does anyone know an easy way to move the data from Field1 to Field2 on only 1000 of the records? I am able to sort by DateEntered to isolate the 1000 records in a find. Is there someway to move just these 1000 from Field1 to Field2 without effecting the other 2000 records?

I just got into FM Pro, please bear with me. I want to created a Table view of info (date, time, action done, client name). But when I click on a "new" (its told to create a new record) button, it creates a new line, which I want, but also creates a new record. I want to be able to create a new line within my current record. Is this possible??? Thank you for you help.

I know what "STOP FM" does, but what does "PAUSE FM" do exactly? The documentation doesn't say. I am re-writing the scripts to do backups and my predecessor had it stop FM server, copy the files, and then start it again. I read that I can just PAUSE FM but it doesn't say what that does or what the advantages are.

Hello, I'm trying to do something really simple, I think, but can't seem to get it to work as I would like. I want to press a button and have FileMaker launch IE and take me to a certain web page. Here's what I've done so far: Send Message ["aevt","odoc"] and I Specify text: http://www.FileMaker.com/ I have the "Bring target application to foreground" box checked but when I press the button it launches IE and and goes to the proper site but it DOES NOT come to the foreground. I've tried halting and exiting as the next script step but have the same results. Any ideas? BTW, I'm on FileMaker v3.0 (yeah, I know) and W2K Professional. -Ted

Hello all, I am trying to share files using Filemaker Pro 5.0v3. I have turned on the Local and Remote Data Access Companions, and am using TCP/IP as my Network Protocol. For each of three files I have open, I have activated the Local and Remote Data Access Companions in Companion Sharing under Multi-User. When trying to open these files remotely, I select Hosts and then I specify the host name. Repeatedly, and from different locations, this file list always comes up blank. hello all. i'm having a problem and i don't know where to start looking for help solving it. i have shortcuts to our db's on our desktop (windows xp) and in order to open them, i click on the shortcut icon. but occasionally, the db's won't open. the computer will pause, and then nothing. no "file not found" or any other kind of error message. the only solution i've found so far is to restart the computer. this works for a bit, but eventually, the same thing happens and i can't open it again. very frustrating. any ideas? thanks in advance for your help. josh

Help?! We run SMS 2.0 in our organization, and for compatibility reasons need to hold for a while at filemaker pro 5.5. Problem is, the Package Defination File included with 5.5 is not appearing to our SMS server as a valid file. We have a demo copy of 6.0 which has a def file that works great. I have managed to throw the phone tech pretty badly - he's more used to answering questions about queries than network management, and doesn't really speak the language. I've tried reinstalling the def file directly from the cdrom, but it is most certainly a bad def file as included. Does anyone have an example of a valid 5.5 sms file? TIA, Mike

I am working on a 12 file relational database for my brother in-law, and all is going well so far. It's FMPro5.5 hosted on a main srever, the office is networked and there are 3 people working on it at any one time,2 via PC's and 1 via a Laptop. The Laptop is a bit on the slow side. I work on the system from my home office via Terminal Serves and find it so easy to work this way. From what I can gather, there are many great tips provided here that have been developed because of the lack of some features that should be included with the current (or Future) versions of FMP. i have a databse that has a relational databse that includes a portal. what would be the best way to rename it so it works the way it should.

I want to switch from paper/mail or fax mailings to e-mail mailings to my customers. Therefore I want to insert the pages with created with fmpro 5.5 in my email. for instance, I use my orderform layout to create a 2 page orderform in FMPRO, which i want to seen at the end of my mail. Customers should be able to hit the reply button and put "X" in front of each article the order, or eventually a number to indicate a quantity. Also they should be able to fill in their name and adress. Thus I cannot use PDF files, as one cannot write in them. There must be a way to insert pages created by FMPRO in a mail soft, or Word, or any other text soft. Thanks in advance for any help …

There are some scripts as on Bulletin # 107476 in the FileMaker Tech Knowledge base that work using webcompanion. Is this the same when using Filemaker Unlimited , do these same scripts work or do other scripts work too?

I had FMP 6 installed on this machine a few months ago. The program that was running seized up and had to be forced-quit. After that point the program would hang at the load screen just after having "Successfully Loaded TCP/IP". I did an uninstall on FMP. I ran RegClean, thinking that it may be having a conflict with the way the program was shut down. Nothing is working. The program will eventually load, after 2-3 minutes, but it can't run anything, because everything gives me errors. Anyone have any idea what might be causing this issue? This is on a PC running Windows ME.

I have created FMPro calculation fields that produce text results, but when I use spaces or dashes to position the text, their widths expand. This would be used as a simple chart in a summary part. Here is an example: Case(Total Bonds % <= .020,"X", Case(Total Bonds % <= 0.40,"_X", Case(Total Bonds % <= 0.60,"__X", Case(Total Bonds % <= 0.80,"___X", Case(Total Bonds % <= 1.00,"____X",""))))) The calculated result changes the width of the spaces (or dashes) to be wider than the "X" character. I'm running FM Pro 4.1v1 to manage a database of four interrelated files. During the day there are often four or five users connected over the Internet (via port 5003, not using the Web interface), adding and modifying records. There is also an AppleScript running which does searches, sorts and data modification. And there's also the occasional Web access, which involves a search and data modification. All this is on an iBook running Mac OS 9.2. The problem is that every couple of weeks, FM complains that it can't read the disk the file is on, and I end up having to quit and relaunch FileMaker. When I do, FM complains that the file is corrupted, and rebuilds it. …

Would appreciate any help on this matter. I had an earlier version of FM5 that would run on Windows 2000, until I performed a script & lookup with the opening of another file. Windows 2000 would just hang. I installed the updates for FM5, v.2 & v.3, this solved the problems, up until now. (Skip several months) We had to re-install FM5 again, updated to v.3, unfortunately the problem still exists. Allthough we updated to v.3, the systems is hanging when performing the script/lookup. Is there a simple method to determine if 2 records are identical in _all_ fields in a database? And if not identical, which field(s) differ? We have a continual problem where users are duplicating records by pressing Ctrl-D, when they meant to press Ctrl-F to initiate a new find. There is a strict unique key, but the field is not required, and FM somehow permits non-unique keys when records are duplicated! Currently I search for duplicates with ! but then have to manually check more than 175 fields (excl calcs, globals, etc). An alternative would obviously be to not permit creation of new records, but this is not a realistic option. Any suggestions would be…

Very often i have the problem that even when my layouts look fine in "preview"mode, the printout is lousy. Words half printed, ( in lenght or in height) lines changes, even pagination changes. I use the newest drivers, no help. I also notice that fmpro does not take into account priner parameters that are set in windows. I seems that fmpro runs it's own printer driver and does not use the windews printer parametrage. All info about this is welcome.

New User on Mac OS X. 2 problems. First is created a new layout of names and addresses including city, state, zip. FM won't print all the information in the Table view but will print in the form and list view. Additionally, when in the preview view it shows that all fields will print. Secondly, I was composing a form letter and FM would not print the letter at all. The program stopped the Printing Que. I switched programs and printed with no problem so I am assuming that the error in in FM not my OS. Thanks for your help. CW

Hello everyone, We are trying to use Unlimited to run a survey on our Intranet (Novell based). While we have been able to set it up correctly, once a few users (less than 5) log-on, the Filemaker crashes. Any ideas why this is occurring? The machines are 1.2 GHZ machines running on Windows 2000. We were told to install a IIS patch of some sort, which we did, but we still get crashes. Currently Unlimited is on one machine and the data is stored on another. Any help is appreciated.

We're currently using an application called Goldmine at our company to store db info. I was thinking of switching us to FM, but don't know if it meets all our needs. In Goldmine, we can filter a group of records (for example, all people in California), and then easily send these people an email. Does FM do this? If not, is there an easy way to export the found set of records and send a group email from another program like Outlook? My sense is that FM would make the data mining easier than Goldmine, but I need to be able to contact the records in groups as well. Thanks for your input, Andy

A fiels with "unique" in the field definition can contain doubles: 1) when duplicating a record 2) when autonumbering is used, and the value to be filled in is altered in field definition. In both cases no warning is issued to inform you about a double in a unique field. I this a bug, or should i protect my "unique" field in a other way?? Thanks for all advice

I have an odd problem... I have an fp5 file called "Survey" sitting on a server (Macintosh G3). I have FileMaker 5.5 installed on the server and can open the "Survey" file without a problem. If I try copying the "Survey" file from the server to another workstation ... or even try opening the file from a workstation connected to the server I get the following error: "Survey.fp5" was not created by FileMaker or is severely damaged and cannot be opened. Hi, I am creating a Stand Alone DB in FMD6 for distribution to Mac OS X computers only. It is a related database with 8 related files. In OS X you can have bundles, which are bundles of files which are all part of the same program, but you only see one front end icon, meaning you can drag and drop one icon from a CD to your HD and likewise drag it to the trash when you have finished, it also means users don't need to see the mess of files and strange file names associated with your DB. this is exactly what I want to do, have a single bundle of my DB for general ease of use. I am trying to use Filemaker as part of an online store solution (I have actually just taken over the project), and I am having a few issues. Hopefully someone can make some suggestions to help me out... The setup is an online store that takes orders via a shopping system that we have purchased (which works excellently) and dumps them into a tab delimited file. I just upgraded to FM Server 5.5. I had to add the extension .fp5 to all my files so they could be properly served. However, buried deep in my 30+ files are now relationships, buttons and scripts that call for file names with out the .fp5 extension. Now, some of these relationships and scripts work and some do not. Is there a way, a utility that can change all of these for me or do I need to open each and correct individually.

Hi ... I am running Filemaker Server 5.5v2 on OS X machines as database servers and have begun migrating our client machines from Filemaker Pro 5 on OS 9.x to Filemaker Pro 6.0v4 on OS X.2. Some of the layouts of files served on the database servers are "landscape" layouts and these appear/print fine on the OS 9.x client machines. However, with the OS X.2 machines, the layouts seem to revert to "portrait" mode. I have tried Filemaker Pro 6.0 on the OS 9.x machines and the layouts are in "landscape" mode as they should. Another combination: Filemaker Pro 5.5 on OS X, yielded the "portrait" mode "default". Does anybody know how to fix this ? …

We have 99 files that make up an ERP system for a small manufacturing business. Recently we upgraded from FM4 to FM5. I don't remember FM4 restricting the number of databases to 50, but FM5 seems to. Is there a way to increase the number of open databases? The server allows 125. Seems like a user would be able to access all of the files available. Thanks. -barrett

Please help, My company uses Filemaker pro 5 for a database that is stored on a Novell server (called Jupiter by my company) and we are getting strange behavior. Sometimes when our employees save data back to the server when they go to open it back up it is missing (the employees are running Mac OS 9.2). I have no idea why it is doing this and it is not isolated to one employees computer. There seems to be no pattern - it happens off and on. Thanks for any help you can provide.

I've used FM for a while, developing and deploying a discrete amount of multi-user solutions of medium complexity. Now I'm in trouble deciding if FM will be good for more complex solutions. The main problems I've with FM are: 1. Performance of FM Server seem to be poor. 2. ScriptMaker seem to me a bad development environment when it comes to develop/debug complex FM solutions with a lot of scripts, expecially when they performs a lot of steps. 3. I'm setting up a Windows 2000 Server with Directory services. I'm attempting to Assign FileMaker Pro 6 to certain employees in the company. When Windows attempts to install FMP I get the error labeled "problem with shortcut" and msg "Fatal error during installation". If I then try to run FMP I get the error "This application has been installed incorrectly or modified by another program. Please run the Installer to get a fresh copy of the application after determining the cause." Does anyone know what could cause this, possibly a problem in the pdf file, or bad permissions? Thanks

I am a database (SQL and Access) person who is trying to figure out FileMaker Pro to help my sister's company out. She has a NT server with FM Server on it, though it also has FM Pro installed on it. About 10 PC/Macs with FM Pro 5 on them that can see existing hosts (6 of them) that are stored on the Server. Some of these hosts are single-user, some are multi-user, but regardless users can see them all. Question is, I want to add another one and having a darned hard time of it. Hello all, I seem to have something screwed up. Some of the fields on my layout, upon selecting an item from a drop down list, give me the error tone once I've made my selection. The selection enters, but the little bing (tone) tells me that FMP isn't happy. I've apparently formatted something incorrectly or something. I am debating on whether to utilize Filemaker to track all of my business accounting or to default to something like quickbooks. I am very Filemaker savvy but not sure of issues that Quickbooks may have an edge on filemaker. For one thing you have the build the database as Quickbooks is ready to go. I am looking for getting the mac version of quickbooks but it is crippled compared to its windows counterpart and frankly have no desire to purchase a Windows machine. What complicates things more is Filemaker, inc. latest offering for a rebate if you buy quickbooks and filemaker. Huh?! Thoughts?? Thanks!!!

I have a client who has a Power Mac G4 Dual Processor with FileMaker 5.0 Server. Their are 11 databases and 10 clients connecting with varying Mac computers and OS'. They are using Retrospect remote to backup up the scheduled backups of the database created by the FileMaker Server schedular. They have an APC battery backup with a USB connection to the computer. I would like to setup so the user can change the layout of the invoice, but in run-time is this locked so in this case I would need to sell FMP to the user as well. I am using Fm 5 unlimited with 2 databases connected via host to a fm 5.5 server with TCP/IP connections on. This is a Mac network that both machines use OS 9.2.2 About every 15-24 hours the databases close. This just started after 6 months of working with no problems. I have turned on the disconnect idle guest and turned off with no change in the results. Any ideas on how to fix this? I am about to reformat machiens and reinstall software and then replace hubs/switches.

I am tryign to test a FMWSC (MS IIS on W2K Server) + FMPro Unlimited 6 + FileMaker Server 5.5 combination, each one is on different machines (maybe FMWSC and FMU on the same, is this good?). There will be, of course, one or more FM pro clients accessing FM Server. I visited http://localhost/FMPro?config and followed "Configure by Host", added one host and several dbs. In layout mode, Layout pull down menu, Set layout order command is dehighlighted. What do I need to do to get it highlighted so I can change the order of the 7 different layouts? Is the layout first on the layout menu the one that is open when the program starts up? Thanks Andy

I know this question will sound pretty dumb, but I have to ask. When a field is defined as unstored ("A calculation field with a result that is only calculated when the value is needed" per FileMaker documentation), once the calculation does take place is the value literally stored, or is it only calculated and displayed whenever that specific record is viewed (thus saving storage space on disk)? What scenarios could cause data loss? I have a user who is telling me that a record keeps losing data that he has updated. I cannot for the life of me think of a reason that this could happen when no one else has a problem. The one situation I can think of it that the user is updating a record and losing his connection to the database before it has been saved. I am thinking this because he has also complained that he keeps getting dropped from the file.

I use Illustrator 10.0.3 and FileMaker 6.0.3 on Mac OS X.2.3. Whenewer I copy an element of any sort in Illustrator it conflicts with FileMaker. Everything in FileMaker is going very slow until I quit Illustrator. WHY - or more important - can I do anything about it? Jesper Videbak

I would like to make a webpage using Filemaker 4.1 and word 2000. When viewing the page I would like to have a drop-down list of all the products available from one database using a value list that uses a field to assign it values, thereby making the webpage drop down self-updating as it were. After selecting the product from the list it would show the record on the page and the drop down menu would stay above it. I used the cdml instructions to make various searches but I have been unable to combine the features I would like. If anyone could provide any assistance I would be extremely grateful.

FM 5.5 on OSX has been acting weird(er) for me today, and I am thinking about deleteing the prefs file. This got me to thinking, what else besides the basic applicatioin prefs are stored in there? Are windows positions for databases stored in there?

ok, this may be way out of my league as a newbie. but, I will ask how to go about it anyway. I work as a booking agency. so sometimes deals fall through or are finalized. I want to keep ALL records, but records that I am done with I don't want to see them. But if I need to ever go back and look at them I want to access them. Is there a way to have active records and non-active records? in other words, when I click find all I want it to only find active records, not finished or rejected one. thanks.

This has probably been discussed many times before, but I searched and couldn't find any information. What are the pros/cons of using FMP over FMP-unlimited and vise versa. We'd save quite a bit of money using unlimited because there would be no per-seat cost involved. What I'm not sure of is if we can use all the nice features of FMP through a browser-front end. I wasn't sure how portals would work through a web-browser, etc. Is there anything I'm going to have difficulty implementing if I were to use Unlimited instead of FMP?
