Hi. I am new to filemaker and don't really understand what it's all about. It has been suggested that we use filemaker to create reports. The thing is, the reports I am generating need to be viewable via the web. Is filemaker a suitable tool for this application? Got a serious problem when using 5.0 with share files on network (several fm5.0 install using the sames files) When trying to open the main file there's the error : "File may cause a general protection fault"... It's happen on each computers but not at the same time... One day it's the computer #2, another is #6... It'S never happen before with the same computers! We run FileMaker on Macs where I work and we've been considering switching to OS X as our main operating system, our problem though is that FM for OS X is a disaster. It seems a bit incredible that some of the things we noticed first-hand seem ridiculously simple... (but then again, we're not programmers). Like not having toolbars on the client's end, or not being able to start the server automatically (which we definitely need since the server is unattended 98% of the time). Is there a scheduled update for OS X specific issues? Having a near-flawless product under OS 9, we find it appalling that it seems so crippled under OS X.

Hi: I am new to FM5 web publishing , but I am aware that I have to have a permanent web connection in order for everybody to be able to see the database all the time. This is not an option for me. I am building a company web site with Interland (ISP) and perhaps there is a way to published the database im my web site so that everybody can see it. Is this possible? How do I go about it? I have a client who wants to know if they can place our program, done in FM55, onto an OSX server and then have it accessed by workstations using OS9. I have been using filemaker pro 5.5 for OSX for some time with no problems. Suddenly, whenever I start the program is simply quits half way through the installation process. I have tried reinstalling to no avail. What is going on?

Hi, Using FMP Server, we have an automatic back up of our databases. However, we can't connect to them from a web browser. Using FMP U, we can connect to databases from a web browser. What's about back up of databases managed by FMP U ? If the back up process isn't include in FMP U, have we to close databases before save manually them ? Thanks in advance for your help Christian

When I try to update FMP 5.5v1 to 5.5v2 using the updater under Windows XP, I got an error about an 'invalid package'. I don't understand what the problem is, it seems simple enough. I downloaded the updater twice, same results. Can anyone help? TIA KM

A client trying to host some bound runtime files through Filemaker Pro 5.0. The host computer is running Windows 2000 When someone try's to connect to the host computer (win98) they get the flowing message "Order Entry.pit is currently in use and could not be opened. The file is single-user or the host could not be found on the network" All files are set to multi user and the TCP/IP is set Also when clicking the host button on the remote computer, none of the files show up. Hello. I think I may have some kind of problem that is bigger than the database or Filemaker itself. (I will paste the details from my last post below.) Today I removed FMPv3 as administrator from the add/remove in windows 2000, reinstalled it, restarted the computer, installed FMPv5.5, opened a clone from a saved file from April that hasn't been used at all since then, entered one record and had the same spell check crash. It just closed the program without warning. Sometimes you can spell check a record or two, or a word or two before it closes. I have 3 computers on an PC (new Dells) ethernet network 100T with one computer as a dedicated FMP host and the other two computers sharing files from the host. The operation of FMP 5.5 slows tremendously with TCP/IP. What can I do to speed network access other than going to FMP Server? I shouldn't need server yet right?

Currently I have 3 copies of Filemaker 5 unlimited which we purchased for a raic / lasso 5 set up. After a week of testing I realized that RAIC doesnt work as promised. Am I better of Upgrading one copy to FM 5.5 unlimited for the multi-treaded web comp.? Has anyone made the raic work with osx, lasso 5 and filemaker? Any please i can find or read instructions?

if i double click a FMP data file and switch to another process, FMP will launch then the dock icon will bounce forever with a dialog the FMP needs my attention... all i have to do is click the dock icon for it to stop. I would love some help troubleshooting a frustrating problem. I am finishing a FMP v3 database in a PC environment. The file resides on the network server but is usually hosted by another machine since I am still making the final tweeks. (Occationally one other PC will be using it at the same time.) I've had problems while using the web companion. Sometimes databases just close by themselves. I've experienced this on 2 different servers, and with filemaker 4.1 and now with filemaker 5 unlimited. The only thing I'm sure of is that it occurs when users are accessing the database via web companion. It happens when users have tried to search for a large amount of records, but its really hard to reproduce it. Any ideas? Will filemaker close a database to prevent an error, or if it runs out of resources? Any idea?

I was running FMP 5.0 Unlimited since Aug 01 without any problems, publishing about 7 databases on the web with custom pages I made. I recently upgraded to 5.5 Unlimited and Filemaker kept on locking up on the NT server that was hosting it. I then moved it to a Mac G3 running OS 9 and it will run OK for a couple of days, then lock up again. I can't seem to figure out what is going on by looking at the logs. Any ideas or suggestions?

I just purchased FM Unlimited and can not install FM WSC 5.5. When I launch the install I get a dialog advising that I need "root priviledges" and I should "log out of the current account and log in as root." I am the only user on the Mac and I am set up as Administrator. Where do I go from here? TIA for any feedback.

I installed the 5.5 upgrade yesterday on a Mac using OS X. A file I made in 5.5 has a generic icon and will not open unless I open Filemaker. An older file I opened in 5.5 now has a generic icon and will not open by clicking on it. I moved the data from one of the files to Excel, made a new Filemaker file, and imported the data back. Still a generic icon which will only open within Filemaker. Any suggestion as to what may be causing this? Or how to cure the problem?

I swear if its not one thing its another, a customer is running FM 5.5 and out of no where he's getting the good old "The Application Filwmaker has unexpectedly quit due to a type 1 error" Now this is an older thmachine with a G3 300 with 256 mg of ram OS 9.0.4 and nothing else running but the most current version of NetBarrier firewall (which has never given me problems) and FM ULTD with like 90mg of ram given to it ? Is Web Server Connector in version 5.5 better, than the s*** included with version 5? So far we have to program proper security for web served databases. Not it looks that the WSC in version 5 is next to useless piece of s***. We will be probably forced to develop our Security Filter with WSC functionality as well. Does anyone know of a way to get SQL Server to see a FMP DB? We tried creating a linked server to a DB through a FMP DSN but it wouldn't connect to it. I wasn't sure if there was something that I am missing. I did have all the plug ins turned on in FMP so that isn't the problem. Maybe this isn't even possible, I don't know? I was called in to fix a problem. Not my original client. using latest OSX on G4 tower and Filemaker 5.5v2. to host (not server servion). Only 1 file and not many records. This file only accessed by two Mac OSx clients. Same machine is also hosting another very small filemaker file via web sharing plug in. They are sharing access to that database over LAN with Mac and Window web browsers. Problem is that database keeps getting corrupted. I have 4 Win/XP computers set to TCP/IP in network protocol. When I open the program on the HOST computer it says allowing multiuser over TCP/IP for each file it opens. When I try to open the host file it can't be found from inside FMP5.5 and if I link to the file directly in the shared drive it says "the file is single-user or the host can't be found on the network". I have a few client FM5 here on Mac's OS 9.2 while Appletalk is on and they try to open FM they recieve an error stating that the maximum amount of users is on. My users all have their own client and we have checked the serial numbers on each machine and there are no duplicates. These are for their own individual databases that aren't shared with anyone. If we turn Appletalk off we are able to open the application of course this is not a solution that will work for us since they use Appletalk to print. Any suggestions would be appriecated. Thanks. I am new to this forum and apologize if there is an easy way to look at archives, but I have a machine that is having problems with Helvetica. When I open Filemaker on it, the files that use Helvetica come up with the text in the fields garbled. At the properties of server>Guest tab: require filemaker pro guest to login to windows domain is checked. Recently I have started experiencing problems with starting FM 5.5.2 and opening FM files in Windows XP Professional. It takes about 2 minutes to launch FM (I have a 1.8 GHz Dell with plenty of memory)and it sometimes takes even longer to open an individual file, regardless of its size. I have a 10-file solution that can take up to 20 minutes to fully open. Windows Task Manager reports "FM Not responding" while files are being open. Once the files are open everything works with no problem and the application is snappy. Any idea why it may be happening? Thanks to those who helped me with questions to set up my donor database in FP5.5. It's been ticking along nicely and slowly grew from 1MB to 1.5MB over 3-4 months. But this month, the file size jumped to 4.2 MB! I haven't added much, a handful of new records and a small true/false field. No new scripts. I have compared the current version to my last backup a month ago and can't see any noticeable changes, apart from the size. Can anyone suggest a reason why this has happened? What is promp8? We have 2 computers peer to peer, one(98SE) with FM5, where the solutions are loaded, and another with FM5.5 (2000ME). The FM5 contains a file called Promp8. It is a filemaker application file, DOS name FILEMA~2.exe 1.89 Mb., same as FM5. It appeared a couple of weeks ago. It seems to be needed to open one of our databases. It is not picked up by a virus scan. Never seen it before!

I have a simple question. Regarding deleted records. If a record has been deleted is there any way to get it back. This is not related to any particular issue but is a general worry that I have. We have been having frequent crashes using FileMaker 4.0. I have had to recover data about 5 times this week. I need to track down the problems and I'm not sure how. Hi, I have a simple FileMaker Pro 5.5 (Mac OS X) database containing sensitive personal data. Is it possible to save the database automatically in an encrypted format? Just setting a password is not enough, because then the data can still be read with any hex editor. The procedure that I'm following now is to save the database in an encrypted .dmg disk image; but there should certainly be easier alternative? Does anyone have a suggestion? Thanks, -dd

I have just got my copy of FM Developer 5.5 and have been going through the manual. When I will install it I can choose between to keep my FM Pro 5.0 or upgrade to 5.5. My question is if there is some things that will malfunction if I develop in 5.5 when the users only have 5.0? If I have understood it right there will be some functions that only works in 5.5 but they are of minor consequence like the hand over a button. Is this right? I am trying to record a sound file from FM, store it in the container field (HardDrive is an option) and then playing it back from the same container field (or using script, insert automatically from Hard Drive into a container field). I know that FM invokes its own sound recorder when you click on the container field, but the recording time is 30 sec only. I am looking for some solution that will allow to record a sound file until I stop it and if it takes to involve a third party application, it should run on the background, prefferably. We currently have a white board at work that we put magnets on which tell where a job is currently at in the department or what it is waiting on. For instance, lets say printing and desktop design are two of the topics. I recently took on the volunteer position of Membership Chairman for a charitable organization. I purchased FM to use for mailing labels and membership lists. So far so good. A simple problem I have is how to count, then print the number of records in a given report. I have no trouble sorting and filtering the records, then printing and distributing various lists, but I'll be darn if I can find a way to put the total records in the list at the bottom. Any help would be much appreceated.

Two methods will accomplish this. Both involve the use of some kind of "flag" to indicate the status. This "flag" could either be a single field or could be the result of the data in several fields. You can use record level validation in Filemaker 5.5 and set the editing validation to only be allowed when the results of the lock status is equal to 1. (i.e. Flag = 1 or InvoiceStatus <> "Complete") You can also use an editing layout which is seperate from the browse layout. Can several users update a database at the same time? If I have, for example, if I have formatted a field as a pop-up list can it be updated by several uses? If a field is edited by a user would a second user get a message indicating that the record is locked? I am trying to create a report where the records are being grouped by a field. The report will displey the groups correctly only if the records are sorted by the field by which the grouping is done by. How can I sort the records automatically so the user doesn't have to sort manually? The report has to be done in preview mode and there if I insert a button cannot be pressed. Here is a problem. I am running a database on a Mac running OS9. For certain security reasons I am using ApleTalk Protocol in the Prefs. (I dont want any access thru tcp/ip over the internet). Now this works fine for my local network users on OS9 machines. As long as I also set their prefs. to ApPleTalk, they can access the database. But no go from any machines running OSX. First off, there is no option to set the prefs. in FileMaker OSX to AppleTalk. I have as of yet not been able to get access to the database over the network from the OSX machine. Anyone else seeing this problem?

Unfortunately, having bought FMP5.5 and OS X and not being aware that the Dial Phone script step does not work I am now faced with ditching both and going back to FMP5 and OS 9x as my time recording system totally relies on this script. I'm hoping to piece together a script which shuffles the contents of three fields, but am not really sure if this is do-able, or where to begin. Any ideas would be very welcome. I have a DB with multiple-choice test questions in it, and each record has three fields [A, B, and C] with three possible answers in the; one of them is correct. I have been trying to create a checkbox without any success. I want to create a little box where the user will click on it and the box will turn into a check mark. In MS Access is called a Yes/No field. I'm sure FileMaker will have something similar. By the way, I went to help and couldn't get any direction regarding a checkbox. I just moved into this job and I inherited a FM 4.1 application with 33 databases. The system has been tracked over by my 4-5 predecessors to the point it's really muddied - it's barely half relational any more. I'm considering upgrading to the latest & greatest FM, but I'd like to get a handle on what I've got first. Are there any documentation tools that'll help me out with identifying scripts, layouts, relationships and the rest? Oh, and does the newest FM have a way to export styled text? Thanks

Hello My company is looking into a database solution for the majority of our inner office forms and memos etc. I have been researching FMP and was wondering about the functionallity of FMP Unlimited. Of particular interest is whether a user accessing the database from the web is able to create, modify, and delete records on the database or whether the database can only be used to view data and perform searches. We have a small web site using WebStar 4.3 and Filemaker 5 unlimited/web companion with a few custom published web pages for searching for classes in a catalog. For some reason, Filemaker unexpectedly and seemingly at random, "disappears". IE it does not show up in the finder, but when I try to restart it I get the "too many licensed users" (we have only one license for unlimited) and I have to restart the machine. I have enabled the error logs to see what pages are being used when it crashes, and there seems to be no rhyme or reason to it. No consistent searches being performed. The interval between crashes ranges from a few hours to a few days-- it doesn't seem to be…

I have tried the "setting sliding options" from the help file in FileMaker, and even though I have followed the instructions carefully and tried it several times, it does not seen to want to work. Any ideas?

When I login FileMakePro4 from a workstation on the network to the server I've this problem that layout pop-up menu in status panel under Browse mode doesn't display the list of layout any more. But it's OK on other workstation using same login (superuser privileges. Even I reinstall FM4 it still doesn't display the list of layouts from layout pop-up menus in status panel of browse mode. I'm using FMPRO 2.1 for a simple database of my record collection (anyone looking for the hits?) In my LAYOUT, I have fields for the date and the Page #. I can see the date on the screen but all I see is PAGE - with no page number. Since I don't want to print the WHOLE thing out at once, and will want to print parts at various times, what do I need to do or add to be able to know what PAGE I'm on. Thanks....NORM

Can someone please tell us how to backup files on our Filemaker 2.1 program. We have NEVER been able to figure this out. I want to backup onto a floppy. There is no backup icon and I've tried the "save as" and that didn't work either. I don't want everything that has been entered, just a certain new file. Thanks.

Hi, I am building an application for my fathers company, he has 4 people wishing to access it (read&write -- via TCP/IP peer-peer) on a non-intensive basis. My questions: My application consists of 12 database files. Reading the blurb I notice that for FM (non-server) the maximum number of database files shareable is 10. What does this mean in reality? Will the host machnine only share 10 of the 12 files it has open? If so, which 10? My father is running on a very tight budget (hence why he has his son building an application in spare time!) and cannot stretch to the Server edition ($1000). Any thoughts or help? James

Hello, In the Dutch version of FileMaker Pro 5.5 for Mac OS X, the help system seems to lack a Dutch index. I can search for English terms only (no Dutch terms will be found), but then it will display the corresponding Dutch help info. Is anyone else also experiencing this problem, and does anyone have a suggestion how to solve it? Any help is much appreciated! Dirk-Jan

I have been testing ODBC with the 5.5v1 demo release on Win 2k. Unfortunately, for some reason unknown to me, the remote data access companion will not install. As you probably know this file is called fmrdac.fmx and should be installed into the "Settings" folder. Each attempt (5 total) I do the complete install but this companion does not get installed. Can someone please send me the file so I can complete my testing? I am trying to build a First Class RAD app to connect to a filemaker database and want to know if it will work before I purchase an upgrade to 5.5 Thanks in advance.

I have some users in a hospital connected to FM Pro Server 5 via FM Pro 5 Client running on NT workstations. I noticed that for some users, when their default printer is a local HP inkjet printer, it causes the response time they get from FM Pro to be extremely slow. If I change their default printer to a networked Laser printer, their FM Pro application flies along at a very respectable speed. Any suggestions on how they can stay connected to their local inkjet printer and get normal responsiveness from their application ?
