FileMaker Legacy fp3 and fp5

i run FM3 pro and i like to make a link in my fm file that would point to let say m:buildingpicturepic1.jpg. in my file it is description of building and if i import the pic it get too big (over 2Gig)so i need to just add a link like in netscape an HTML link that would point to my picture , and the picture would be open by ms photo editor . how can i do it ?? thanks sylvain [email protected]

I'd like to export the correct formatting of fields that contain italicized words. It's comparable to exporting citations for a bibliography. I'm using FMPro 4.1. The quotation marks will export but nothing else. Ideas?

I am/have been importing small (180 pixel) RGB jpegs into FMP 4.03. They are 16-25K each. But they seem to be increasing the size of my DBs by 10x that each time. Is there anything I can do to improve this? I searched the FMP site which spoke a little bit about older versions only storing pictures as tiffs but that is all I could find. I'm using FileMaker 4.1 and operating system 9.0.4. In older operating systems I could use tab+control to move from record to record. I can't anymore -- that command takes me back to the finder. That keyboard command was so helpful and I really miss it. Any solutions? Thanks!!

I have finished creating my Filemaker databases for a project. I have also completed making the HTML files that allow me to access the databases from the web. So far I have been using the Filemaker 4.1 Web Companion, which allows me to start a Filemaker Server on the NT machine on which I was working, and thus allows me to host the database and make it accessible on the web. My dilemma is that I do not want to be using my NT machine as a server for the Filemaker files. I was wondering what you would suggest. Is there any way to run a Filemaker server on a generic web server, or on a linux machine? Any help would be greatly appreciated. - Urizen

Hey, I have an issue concerning the memory allocation of a file maker pro application. The user is in FMP 4.1v3 for a few minutes, scrolling around and entering info. Then in the middle of the application it "magically" locks up and acts as if it is trying to catch up. The CPU usage jumps from around 1%-3% to over 50% and even 100%. I have configured my database to use the EXACTSEARCH restriction in other to protect some records. As I was browsing this database through the WWW, in the URL I replaced "Find" by "FindAny" then I realized that my records are not really protected. Could anybody help me ! Thanks a lot.

Hi, I've recently been introduced to FMP 4.1 and am having a problem with configuring a "find" layout. I have a group of 100 members who each sit on roughly 65 committees. I decided to cast one field with repeating values for the committees, and ideally would like to choose one of these committees from a value list, hit a find button, and go to a new layout that lists the committee's members. Actually I have managed to accomplish most of this, only I am now unable to display the committee that was searched on in the "Results" layout. Will the repeating field prevent me from displaying the search criteria, or is their a workaround - such as a script - to display the …

When I trye to use the "Send Mail" script, nothing happen. I think I have done the proper omtions in the script, I use Claris Emailer 1.1 and have installed the Internet Config. I am using MacOS 8.6. Any suggestions?

I am using Windows NT workstation and installed Web Server Connector on IIS. It asked me for a user name and I entered one. Now I restart and open Filemaker WSC Admin Page and click on a link and a box pops up asking me for a user name and password. I have tryed everything I can think of and can't get passed this screen. I am running FMPro Unlimited 5 on 1 mahchine as the host and using WebStar on nother machine as the web Server.The connection is fine, but once logged into the host via a browser the HTML is not being constructed properly and is distorted.Is this a Filemaker problem or a WebStar problem?Has anyone else had this problem? I have FM3 on 1 windows mach and a bunch of macs. 2 files are constantly crashing only when used on the windows machine. They are being recovered at a constant rate. The major problem is we seem to be losing information in those crashing files. I havecreated a clean copy, and recovered the files to try and find a corrupt file, but it all works fine on the mac. It seems also, over the weekend, a few of the fields disappeared in one of the files. Help

I am running Server and Unlimited on an intranet. I have a database that is password protected. I am sharing this file over the www using Unlimited and Server. I need the file to be password protected from people accessing the database from the www and the intranet. My problem is that whenever I reboot my server (which is frequently on Windows NT) I have to reenter my passwords. Is there a way for Unlimited to automatically enter these Passwords so I don't have to put them in?

Hello everyone, I am having some trouble. This is the situation. I have two databases, one called Profiles(holds the Last Name of a person and some other info) and the other called Records. I want to link these through the web so that when I create a new record in the Profiles database and enter all the data in it, I want the text field that holds the Last Name in the Profiles database to transfer into another text field in the Records database. Hi, I have a FileMaker Pro 2.1 database file (11.8MB). I want to be able to transfer this to Access 97. I have tried exporting as a .dbf file but all Iget in access after this is a 365KB file!! It seems to be only exporting the data from the window that is active in FileMaker. I have some Access knowledge but have never used FileMaker before...please help!!!

Is there a quick way of deleting fields no longer in use on any layout - without having to trawl through the Define Fields area and delete individually?

I'm using Filemaker Pro 4.1 Web Companion to publish my Filemaker database on a standalone Mac using all the default setting TCP/IP port 80 ..etc. When I try to access the database using a search button I get an error message "The attempt to load file:///..../FMpro failed" . It appears that it can't find the Filemaker Program yet it's in the same folder as the web page I'm using. Any ideas what I' doing wrong.

Is it possible to use FM's find capabilities to search my inventory on the web? I want customers to be able to find what they're looking for, prices, etc., not to buy on-line, but to ease the heavy seasonal phone traffic in the store. I get an error message ever day. it causes no problem with server function. The message flashes in the finder: "Recalulate Today Function" I click on the message and an alert window apears "File window wasn't found". I click on "OK' and it goes away. I am running an apple script in Server to recalulate the today function all databases running on the server.

Two things, we have an installed base of FMpro 3 users mostly NT with a few MAC in peer to peer mode. We want to give access to the databases on our local network to outside users. We are implementing a VPN solution and I believe using FMpro server will give better access to our outside users. Question 1 can I use FMpro 5 server with 3 databases being accessed by 3 clients?. We are running a hosted FP3 database version 3.6 over a TCP/IP windows network. I have one user who cannot access the server based files using shortcuts on his desktop, he must 1st open FP3 then do a file>open>network neighborhood>server1>databases>rest of path blah blah blah. Sometimes this does not work either. Gives the error that "the file cannot be found and is needed for this operation". Has anyone else noticed that the Home Page FileMaker Connection Assistant won't work with Web Companion 5.0v5? After installing the Web Companion 5.0v5, FileMaker always returns the message "FM Server is not responding at this address" when trying to connect. With everything else the same it worked fine with 5.0v3. I've tried it on Windows 95 and 2000. I will go back and see if it works with Web Companion 5.0v4. --Brian

This may be a really amateur question... but for the life of me I can't figure out how to do a find on a text field for records that "begin with" or "start with" a specific text string whether it be part of the first word or the entire first word. I am using FM Pro 4.0 and wonder why FileMaker Inc. didn't include a way to quickly and easily perform this seemingly simple task. Any thoughts? We are running filemaker 3 on macintosh (mac OS 8.5-9.0, imacs, ibooks, powerbooks, starmax, ect.) and windows (95) all off a appleshare IP 6.2 server (starmax). The windows machine seems to be where the main problem is. A few of the filemaker files seem to be crashing on the windows 95 machine randomly thus causing complete recovery. It isn't just one file, but a couple. Now, one of the files can not be opened at all. It crashes the windows 95 computer and freezes any mac that trys to open it. Hi, there is my problem. We use 2 file in fmpro3.0 One is the pricing.fp3 and the second one is for quotation.fp3. The quotation and pricing are link so when I write a model number in quotation, the quotation goes in the pricing search the model and write the price and the description in the quotation file. THIS IS FRUSTRATING! I have 3 files that are related by a common field: item number. The files are 1999 Sales, 2000 Sales, and 2000 projections. I creating reports that include sub summaries on the months JAN - DEC. I can easily use the Getsummary function on summary fields within the primary database. However, when I try to use the function on a related database summary field it does not work. The workaround is silly, and I hope that it is not the case, but as a test I created a calculated field in the primary database that pointed to JAN 1999 sales, then I created a summary of that field. I am trying to bring a FlieMaker file in to ACT. The file contains a repeating field for telephone numbers. I've tried different methods of bringing all of the telephone numbers in to act and also in to other file formats. The best we can do so far has been to get 3 seporate records, but we need to get all 3 phone numbers on the same record. We have the names to bring out and manipulate in to almost any filetypes. I have created a layout that is used to produce a report, normally 20 pages+. If I use any new PC the printer will only print the first 5-6 pages (the rest come out blank). Awhile back I post a query about incompatibility issues with MacOS 9 and FMP Server 3.0. It appears that under some circumstances FMP Server 3.0 has an Disk op problem with OS 9 causing the FMP Server to crash unexpectedly. I have found a solution. Using a utility like AppDisk [pay your shareware fees its really worth it ] to create a RAM disk and loading your db files into RAM will eliminate the problem. AppDisk will also auto save to disk at regular intervals, so you won't lose data if you have a system crash. Our server was crash…

I have discovered a bug with using the FileMaker WebServerConnector java servlet on Apache on MacOSXServer. FM tech support has confirmed it, but several months have passed without solution. I think we need to raise the heat a little so that they respond. This product costs nearly $1000. I expect a fix. The bug is that it cannot accept more than about 3000 characters as part of a submission to a web form creating a new record.

I'm trying to do a simple sign-in roster, where users enter their user ID, hit OK and are logged in, date/time stamped, and set active (an entry in Timein field). Users are stored in the employee database. New users will set up a new record (userid, firstname, lastname, and orgid) in the employee database as part of the log in. Now when i click on the FM Pro client and click on HOST i don't see the server i have to SPECIFY the serve IP/NAME. On the older server it was never the case. A user was using FileMaker 3 (we use 3 and 4) on our network and tried to print and crashed so he restarted the machine. Now when I try to access the file, I get the message: "That file has been damaged or possibly had its access priviledges tampered with" I've tried opening it from 3 and from 4, and copying the file, and recovering the file. For example, I have a record with one section that contains 10 fields listing parts. I want to do a find that will find the name of the part in any or all of those 10 fields. Not sure how to do this. We currently run FileMaker Pro 4.1v3 on our home PC on Win95. My teacher wife needs this specific version to prepare a digital report cards for her class. Everyone in her school board must run this version. I however wish to purchase and install Filmaker Pro version 5. I'm able to install Web Connector but am not able to access the admin page or otherwise use the software. I am trying install onto an NT4 SP5 server with IIS. The installer starts and completes with no problems but after rebooting and trying to open the localhost/FMPro?Config page I get a 404 File Not Found error. I would like to automate a backup of my shared filemaker v4 database (it is up all the time). Prior to backing the db up, I have an applescript that closes the database down, does the backup, and then restarts the database again. I work for a web development company and we have a customer who would like to use FileMaker Pro 5 Unlimited for their database. We noticed that FM Pro 5 Unlimited creates the necessary web pages for you. Does this mean that FM automatically creates the web pages HTML and ASP code? Also, if it does do all the code for you, does it support previous browsers like IE3 etc? If not, how much does the ASP code vary when compared to ASP code for an MS Access '97 database? I've recently been handed a FM 3.0 database with many, many layouts. It has worked fine for 4+ months, but last week, when I try to click on the layout tab to bring up the list of layouts to select, nothing happens...the tab "looks" like it's pressed, but I can't get to the other layouts. An older backup of the database works, but not the one I'm using. Any suggestions?

I just got FMPro Unlimited, and have a huge learning curve ahead of me, but I really want to overcome and become proficient at it. I kind of have to.... Anyway, I am greatly daunted by the array of choices out there for training. I can see that the Scriptology book is the one to get for advanced training, but I will have to get some basics under my belt first. The question is WHERE? I need a very rudimentary tutorial in it, and though I loaded the tutorial that is on the program, I cannot find it anywhere for use. Is the book, "File Maker Pro for Dummies" any good.... it would seem to be dealing with basics, judging by the title.

After years of happy use I have encountered my first serious problem with a file and with FM Pro 4.1v3. Kept randomly crashing with Type 11, 2 etc. Finally got message that the file could not be opened and had to use recover command. Works for awhile but after adding 5 to 10 more records get a crash and then need to repeat the recovery. Tried to import recovered records into a clone but problem re-occured. Any suggestions? My old Aptiva has the Filemaker 4.0 v1, build 950 on it .... I got a iomega zip yesterday - and it worked fine. Today the zip is not responding. The iomega support told me that sometimes they communicate and sometimes they don't (of course I am paraphrasing!) Background info: We are currently running FM Server 3 with clients of FM 4; all Macs on Desktop G3 and 8500; 12 computers and the server. At any time, (start up, in the middle of working in the program) a client version will just quit, it closes itself. No error message, nothing. You never know when it will happen or whose computer it will quit on. Memory has been increased for the program on all machines; the server has been checked, we are not taxing the number of users. We're running our production databases on one machine using FM Server 5 and we use automatic backup to back up those files each night. Using Visual Basic, we copy the backup files to our web server (separate machine) and want to open them in FM Pro Unlimited 5 to allow access to more than 10 web users. In order to do this we would have to close the day old files on the web server, then copy the new backup files and open those in the Unlimited application. Does anybody know of an easy way to do this or know of something that has already been created? Thanks!

I want to paste a pdf data file into a database of FM Pro 4. If I create a container field I am able to do it, but it will not allow me to move or re-position it within the container and also it does not keep the filename assigned to the original pdf, it is just a generic label for the file. It would be great to find a way that FMPro could accept pdf's the same way that e-mail excepts them. I would like to resolve this issue this week. Thank you for your help on this frustrating topic. Strange problem: we have a FMP Server running under NT4 (newest service pack), and several FMP4/Win95 clients attached (using TCP over Tokenring). Since a couple of weeks, some clients hang occasionally for no apparent reason, getting stuck in the 'network busy' icon (the little flash, not the cup of coffee). Only remody is a End Task (Ctrl-Alt-Del). Clients are running FMP 4.0v1 and 4.0v2. Database has not changed (only gotten bigger).

I'm using a G3 powerbook running OS8.6 to create FMP4 databases, saving them to PC formatted floppies and attempting to open in Win98 then "save a copy" for use on the Windows based machines within our school district. Everything went well until last week. Now, I encounter the very same error... The database opens to where I can partially see the startup page and an error box appears: "This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down." When using FM 5 for Windows when in layout mode the mouse pointer blinks, alot. Whenever I move it to size an object or move an object the pointer arrow actually disappears for a second. When I am trying to select a specific point on the layout I have to wait for the pointer to settle down before using the mouse button. Any ideas? Thanks Doug

When I initially installed it I chose NOT to install the tutorial,examples, etc. I have gone back to install these files and the installer asks for the Installation Code so I enter it and everything installs. Now when I launch FMPRO I get an error messege saying that I have exceeded the number of copies for a single user license. I'm not on a network just on a single iMac. I am trying to publish a database I have hosted on a FileMaker Server 3.0 on the web. Has anyone done that sucessfully?

Hi! As a publishers agent, I run a database on filemaker 4 to track orders for books on behalf of my customers. Obviously one order can have more than one book entry. I'm trying to create a merge file in word so that I can send confirmation of orders as an email attachment - however, can only get the first line of any order in the word merge document. The database is relational - ie One file for orders and another for order lines. Any suggestions? David Este

I am using a WEB form with an FMP 4.0 database. It is a survey with certain values defined as "required values." My problem is that I want to be able to customize the error message to give the missing field names in RED, or something comparable, if the person does not fil out all the required values. I am a rookie with this software, but am using Filemaker Pro v. 4.0 and am trying to setup a script that will accomplish the following: Get a text name from a field, e.g. "Bill Smith" Search the database for records with the same name. Count the number of records. Put the value (number of records) into the text of a second field on the form. The application is a reporting database and the purpose of this script would be to inform the user of the number of previous reports which have been completed on the individual to date. I am running FileMaker Pro 3.0 on an old Mac IIsi, OS 7.5.3. I am now buying an iMac which will have OS 8.5, or 8.6 or perhaps 9. Will I be able to load and run FM Pro 3 on the new machine? Will it make a difference which of the three OS above that I get? Any advice or help would be most welcome.

I just got File Maker Pro Unlimited 5.0, and have installed it, but cannot get the Web Server Companion to install, but get an error message. Does anyone know why it is doing this? Thanks

Hi there I have got a problem with my database on the web. Ive got a field that has contains track titles. The complete list shows up in filemaker but on the web the field is cut short. I'm using filemaker4.1 and lasso 3.5 Do you know how to solve this problem. thanks all. nikolai

How can I do a search in 14 text fields (A1, A2, A3, etc.), within the same file, without doing 14 requests. The search should return all the records that has, at the least, one matching result. Now to make things more difficult, each field can contain from one to five words.

One of my annual responsibilities, as a teacher of disabled children, is to write each student a prescriptive educational plan (IEP) for the next school year. It's composed of many variables, including Annual Goals and Instructional Objectives appropriate for the individual child's skill needs. I am creating a bank of goals and objectives, which grows each time I write new ones, to use as a resource. Can a CurrentSkip be converted to a cookie? We'd like to show the same sequence after altering data in a record. The CurrentToken is already in use. Example: If we want to change the record number 35 when we show records 31 - 40 (Skip=10), we also want to come back to the same range of 31 - 40 instead of 1 - 10. We have tried the following: [FMP-SetCookie: skip=FMP-CurrentSkip, Expires=43200] in different variations, but so far, no luck. I have FMPro 4.1v3. The Help files have become unavailable from the Tool bar. However the files "FileMaker Pro Help" and "FileMaker Pro Balloon Help" are still in the root folder and so is the app "Quickhelp". I can run Quickhelp separately and bring up the "FileMaker Pro Help" file with no problem...but not from the FMPro program itself. Any ideas on how to re-establish the link will be most appreciated. I'm having trouble importing Excel 98 into Filemaker 4.1 under OS9. My Excel data is times as hh.mm.ss.000. When I import into Filemaker it appears as hh.mm.ss. If I save as comma-delimited in Excel I can import into Filemaker as hh.mm.ss.000, which is what I want. Is this a problem with Excel, the import filter, or what? And is there any other solution apart from the comma-delimited workaround? Thanks! Max

I'm not sure is this is the best folder in which to post this message but I couldn't find one that seemed to fit this question! I am looking for an invoicing example (either article, freeware, or shareware) that includes balance forward, partial payments on outstanding invoices, and calculation of finance charges on outstanding balances. All the examples I can find on the Web are very simple invoicing that is either point-of-sale or does not use balance forward or finance charges. I have some thoughts on how to approach this project but it would help me tremendously to see how others have attacked this problem! Thank you very much!
