FileMaker Legacy fp3 and fp5

I am new to this whole FMP world and the Mac world, so this may be an obvious question. My office recently upgraded all our computers to run on OS X, with a new OS X Server. We use FMP 6.0 for all of our business activities. We have eight computers hooked up to the server and access filemaker files through hosts. But every once in a while everyone will get kicked off the server and the message says something like "communication was lost with the host" then we have to re-open all files. Sometimes one of the files is corrupt and we have to Recover the lost file. Once this is done, we run like normal. But these crashes are starting to happen multiple times throughout…

Hello: Does anyone have any samples or ideas of how to create a document management system in filemaker for iso controlled documents. Something which would intergrate with Outlook for an approval process is required. The users want a friendly interface to search the documents (which are in word/excel formats). Hi, I am new to this forum. I have a cross platform database done in FMP 6. It runs on OSX and Windows XP. I have created a field that is the result of adding the text from several fields. I set it up using the "set field" script. The resulting text field is over two pages long. I want to be able to select and copy "x" amount of characters into a different online database progam. I am trying to create a trailing grand summary that reflects the number of summaries within a report. I have records that relate to a household database. The subsummary shows the number of records that relates to that household. However, I need to show how many households are summarized at the end of the report. I have tried to do this a number of ways with no success and suspect that it is easier than I am making it out to be. Any help would be SOOO greatly appreciated.

I have a database posted on the internet for my customers to use, and some users are experiencing "unknown error 972" when trying to access the database, which means invalid password. These users insist they are using the correct password, with the correct case. Is there any possible issue with browser configuration and/or cookies that could affect login?

I will be part of a team in a project to develop a "Geodatabase", they currently use the ArcView 8.3 but not linked with any database (they have none at this moment). Need some guidance here. We are taking orders over the internet and storing the data in a MS SQL Server database server. We need to get the data into our FileMaker database. The SQL Server is a remote server connected via a VPN. What is the best way to do this? I have tried ODBC with no luck over the VPN. Should we put the data into a local FileMaker database on the web server and then transfer it over? How about exporting to plain text from sql and then importing that file into file maker? I know this is a minor thing but I hate it when I see that numbers are not aligned to the right with 2 decimals. Is there a way to format the numbers so that they all align as right justified and not to the left?

Hello all, I am implementing a button script that will show a set of records that match being marked as "Supervisor". I can get the script to work, however, when there are no records that are marked "Supervisor", a dialog pops up saying that No records match this request. This is all well and good, if you want to show that. However, I was wondering if there was something I could edit in my find script that would disable that dialog from displaying on the chance that there do exist zero records marked Supervisor?

i am interested in locking users out of a filemaker database located on a filemaker 5.5 server while the database administrator runs maintenance. i would like to keep the file up on the server but prevent all users except for the administrator from accessing it. in addition, i would like to script this capability into my database so that the database administrator can perform the maintenance without having to do anything too complicated (like, go to the server, close the folder of files, open them locally, turn on single user on the main file, do the maintenance, switch the file back to multi user and open the folder of files back through the server admin window)

I'm running a solution that has 15-20 databases linked together through scripts, relationship,etc....While I'm developing I keep 3 or 4 copies of the databases store in the computer in order to have a way to come back if I obtain an undesired result from a change.... my problem is that FM tries to be "helpfull" by remembering location of a database and when I change something it goes to them automatically.......so I work for hours in the solution, and when I upload the files to the fm server, the changes do not work correctly because the changes were not made where they should have...... maybe this example might help explain my problem: In m…

Hi, I created a graphics database using FileMaker Pro 6. I used the "insert picture" command for the designated image field (container). The database works great from my computer (i.e., all graphics display nicely) but when I set up preferences for web companion and run it on my browser IE 6.0 not all the graphics display in the designated image field. Any suggestions?

I have a database with a number of fields. Each record is a different customer. Each customer is classified into one of six groups. Additionally, two classes they attended are listed for each customer (each in own field, from value list). How would I go about bringing up a new layout or a new database with statistics on how many people took Class X, or even how many people from group Y took class X. Hello, I'm a newbie and I'm still learning the functions of Filemaker. What I'm trying to find out now is how to trigger an event (like running a script) after entering data to a specific field? But I've read from other posts in the forum that says triggering a script on field exit is only possible using a plug-in. I tried the example-plugins from www.filemakerpros.com but I think it only works for Filemaker 7 and I have Filemaker 6. So is there a free plug-in about triggering an event on field exit that works for Filemaker 6?

I am creating a database where I can take payments as a lump sum or as a down payment and several monthly payments. I need to be able to choose multiple payment types for each record. So, you could choose a bank account (check) for your down payment and a credit card for the monthlies, or one credit card for the down payment and another for the monthlies... or any other combination of payments. Does anyone have any experience on working with external functions for remote administration within a script? I'm currently working on a script that will close a relational database for a specific group of users, while allowing administrators to remain logged in. I want to be able to script the external functions for Remote Administration to send users messages that the files are closing within a specific period of time, and the files to actually close. I plan to have a container field in a database which will store images. The user uploads the image, and the actual image is stored in the field. Not just a reference. Is it possible (with plugins or native filemaker functions) to have another field, that automatically resizes the image to say, 150px wide - and keeps a copy of it in there? I'm asking as I want to be able to get at these images from the web using CDML, but obviously I don't want a 2MB jpeg to be downloaded by the client every time they visit a particular page. I sell small ads in weekly newspapers in the Southeast US, and I need to generate a report (invoice) for each newspaper showing how many ads each advertiser ran during each week of the month. I have a file that includes five fields: Newspaper Name, Date, Advertiser Name, Number of Ads, Cost of ads. Each time an ad runs, I create a new record. (Newspaper Name is a lookup from the related 'Newspaper Contacts' file.) Hello, We are having a problem with an eight file solution. It is hosted on a Mac (OS 9) running FMP Server 5.5. Users range from W2K, 98, Mac OS9 & Mac OSX. We suspect that we have one or more corrupt files. There is some strange behavior with some relationships (lost) and value lists (show up on OS9, don't show up on OSX, etc.). I have a bunch of questions, if you will indulge me. How can we figure out which file is corrupt? We have already re-built the largest from scratch. Ok, so I do my Print Setup ... then I create my print script ... but it won't go back to the printer I've set for a specific print script! AGH. It just keeps the one that's currently active. I work for a security company. When our officers call in for a case number, our dispatchers enter the info into the database. Then issue a number to them like 04567. I created a file with two databases: one is the fill out form and the other ons is a control panel with buttons to switch layout, print,... Local all works fine! Now i placed it in the hosts on the server. The two docs open... New to V6 and enjoying the ease of Table View for some situations. But it seems to not recognise sub-summary fields - that is they don't show in Preview. Is this the case? That means it's either re-sizable and movable columns and no sub-summaries - or sub-summaries in a list without the joys of movable columns. I have FM Server running on a OSX box. I have FM Unlimited running on a PC that serves up some of the files from the FM Server. FM Server is set to automatically backup the files each night at 10:00. When it does this the PC unlimited access is paused while the backup occurs. It seems that occassionaly after the backup is complete something happens and the PC unlimited does not come back online. When I come in in the morning I have to go and quit Unlimited on the PC and then relaunch it. Is there anyway to stop this from happening? I guess the easiest way would to find a way to automate FM Unlimited on the PC to quit at 9:59 PM and then to automatically relaunc…

Hi there experts, I had a FM Server network with a G4 server (1.2g RAM) - FM Server - OS 9 and Around 15 FM clients running FMP 5.5 - OS 9 & OS X This was working fine for a couple of years. Only I need to put the FM Server app in foreground in the G4 server. Today I have upgraded the G4 to OS X latest version and re-installed FM Server 5.5 v4. Now when I start the FM application it runs normal for the first 2 or 3 clients. When I start the 4th client, all the clients go terribly slow. It is really annoying. As part of the requisite for the database I require users to be able to move back and forward through each layout as though it were a web page (back and forward buttons on each layout for example). Using Status(currentlayoutnumber) I can move back a single layout from wherever I am, but I need to be able to move back probably two, three, four times. One (DB A) contains a mailing list (addresses, names, etc), the second (DB : is a list of mailings (mailing type, date, number of pieces, description, etc). They are related, and matched by a serial number field in the mailings database (each mailing gets its own serial number), which is related to a repeating field in DB A (called Mailing ID Nos). The boot.ini file was missing and we thought the issue was only a hardware problem. I am a total newbie to filemaker. I have set up a template to enter data and that went pretty well. I am stuck on one thing though. I have two date entries. (dd/mm/yyyy) and I want to automatically calculate the difference between them in weeks, ie 01/01/2004 to 02/01/2004 = 4 weeks. how do I do this? Hello! Am developing a contracting system for an entertainment agency. Hi folks, I'm trying to help a friend move a Filemaker 5 file from an old computer running Windows 98 SE to a new computer running Windows XP. The problem is, any attempt to move or copy the Filemaker file on the old machine results in an instant Blue Screen O'Death. Scandisk on the old computer doesn't find any problems, and Filemaker 5 is able to read and write to the file without apparent problem. Filemaker 5 cannot, however, save a copy of the file, as attempts to do so cause Filemaker 5 to crash. Has anyone seen anything like this before? We recently ported our company databases from Server 3 (running on a Mac OS 8.6) to Server 5.5 and our clients machines from FM Pro 4.1 to FM Pro 6. It has been working fine for about a month with 10-15 users, but a few days ago we started to notice drastic slow downs on accounting databases (with lots of calculations). I've heard that server 7 deals with this by doing calculations on the server side but does anyone know a temporary fix for server 6. Could I purge something on the server? I need to extract email addresses from a text field...There are a lot of extraneous text characters in this field...the only way I can think of is to find any "word" with an @ symbol...any suggestions on how to extract the word to a result text field? i have a system set up with about 100 users. There is a pop up list that can be viewed fully on some machines and gets cut in half on other machines. So, some users can view all of the data and others cannot see the whole name. IE in a company database this looks like this Johnson, James if viewed correctly. some users see Johso If you have 30 Johnsons this becomes difficult. Is this a windows problem, filemaker problem? Hi, I have a database set-up for web access. When I view any of the layouts in a web browser I notice that the scroll bar on the bottom (horizontal) allows the viewer to scroll to the right a whole bunch even though there isn't any text on that side of the layout. I am working with a set of FMPro files I created to generate reports from data exported from another program. I don't have any ability to control the format of data exported from the other program. The problem is, all my dates are importing as 19XX. Oddly, when I open up the text files in Excel, it formats the dates correctly. I KNOW Excel is not a smarter program than FileMaker. I have looked at all my date fields in all the files and cannot figure out what I am overlooking. Any suggestion?

Am currently producing an on-line searchable database using FMPro 4.1v2 and using FMP to serve the whole site. The server is a Mac (BW G3 350 runing OS 8.6). Users are able to search for a list of records by entering any one or more of three parameters. A fourth parameter is permanently set by being a hidden input on the search page. However if a search is made without putting in any user parameters the search returns all records which match the hidden parameter. I am using filemaker 3.0 with a server, windows xp. I have my data on a server, use "hosts" to open from my workstations. On one workstation the "find" button does not work. I created a Layout using bits and pieces from the Customer management template and have notice that when in the browse mode ---when I attempt to "tab" between different fields on my form--the cursor goes to various fields but not in the order of the form? Is there away to make my cursor tab from field to field based on their layout?

I have been set a challenge to build a FM database, that can replace a Goldmine Software situation. The database needs to be available on all the client machines when they are not connected to the net, or central network. BUT when they connect back up, they can resync the data back to the central database, so all the other client machines can access it. Presumably this has got to be a case of just the changed information is uploaded back to the central database, but I can not find a function under FM that will allow this. Ideas??

Hi all, I have been using a filemaker db to run school reports (via a runtime file). Previously, I have been able to get access to layout elements through using the master file password. Now I find that, still using this master password, I have limited access - no access to layout mode, define fields or relationships. There are no other master passwords that I am aware of. Can anyone direct me to unlocking the file - please, please, please!!

I am new to FM6, but getting a firm grasp on its capabilities. I need some advice on how to perform this task. I have a user that needs a report from an existing layout. I could easily give her what she wants if FM would accept SQL statements. My SQL statement would proceed as follows: SELECT * from ENROLL where SCHOOL EQUALS "X" or SCHOOL EQUALS "Y" ; (may be a mistake in syntax, but you get the idea.) I'm a newbie to Filemaker, and our firm has a license to use Filemaker 5.0 Pro. I currently use a "poor-man's" database - an Excel spreadsheet with multiple worksheets. On one worksheet - I have a list of every "firm" that ALL of my clients to business with as a whole (lets say 100 firms). On the other 40 individual worksheets, I have all the fixed info for EACH client (phone, address, etc) and then, about halfway down the worksheet, a have a list of "firms" THAT that client does business with (lets say 15 or so, of the 100). Each client has a different subset of "firms" - lets say any combination, from 5 firms up to 30 firms. No client talks to all 100 firms. …

I recently had to reinstall OSX due to getting hit by the one and only Mac virus last week before the 10.3.4 fix came out. I found afterwards that FMP 6 on the OSX side would flash up its intro screen and then quit. It still works fine under Classic. I reinstalled but same fault. I'm running FM 7 for my own work but have to develop client work under .fp5 Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a fix? [color:"black"]

We have two computers. Both of us have full accesss. The filemaker files reside on my computer. If I open the files first, my partner is allowed access. When my partner opens the files first, I am not allowed access. (I get the message that the files were not closed properly, etc.) Is there any way around this?

I use FM to store formulas for radioactive purposes...explaining the how in a textfield... I tried to use the greek signs alpha, beta, gamma in a textfield....together with the 'normal' letters...no way... In Word it's ok In Excel it's ok When I import the XL file in FM : alpha = a beta = b etc... any idea or workarounf for this ? Thanks

I have 4 salesmen that enter customer info into the database. I want to restrict each salesman to be able to work with his or her own info and not mess with the others.. Passwords for each don't work as they are able to edit the other salesmen... have I made myself understood and is there an answer..?

What I am trying to do is to add the percentage chosen from the Pop-up menu to the total of the "Field GTotal". I tried using some of the scripts (couldn't figure it out); I also tried to use the value list (sum of Fields A;B;C... + %Field)- but it didn't work either. Any suggestions? We plan to have a users registration database driven by Lasso. We will always allow data from Lasso into all fields. However, in an effort to acheive data consistency, we will manually authorize these user accounts. Certain fields should only contain data that is validated by a value list. In the event that a particular field doesn't validate we'd like to clearly identify it by changing to field style for that record to indicate so (perhaps bold and red). I don't think record-level formatting is possible, but perhaps someone has come up with a clever workaround. We cannot provide the value lists on the Lasso side due to confidentiality issues. Any thoughts?

On a Database Record we have 12 fields where we enter the number of Hours Worked on a project for an employee. Each of the 12 fields contains the number of hours worked on a particular stage of the design process. (There are about 1500 records in this database). What I need to do is reduce the number of Stages in the design process to about 7 by combining some of the processes. So, for example we will combine Fields 1 & 2 and also Fields 7 & 8. What is the best method to use to add the "Hours Worked" in field 1 to field 2 - for all the records.

I have an email script with an email form that takes the address from a field in my DB. The generated email for Apple Mail is right for everything but the email addresses for To: and cc: For some reason they come out with two email addresses concatenated together. It looks like a bug but I can't find anything on it anywhere.

Hello, I have spent an hour trying to find this info here, but to no avail. I am trying to help someone with the following problem. There is a FM5.5 server running 2 databases on TCP/IP. The databases are usable via remote TCP/IP when using FM pro 5 and 6 on windows, and in OSX on the mac. There are several OS9 machines using FM5 and FM6, but when trying to connect to the remote database xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx, a empty window is all that is shown. The problem is the same on every OS9 machine running either FM5 or FM6. Thanks in advance for any help that will prevent me from jumping off of a small bridge.

First some background. We have a multiple (>40 tables) file .fm5 database being served by FMserver to a mixed bag of macs and pcs. The server is an XServeG4. Twice in the last couple of months, I've seen some odd and rather frightening behavior: scripts with a "Set Field" step don't work properly. The step "Set Field (othertable::fieldN, fieldA)", instead of setting FieldN in the other table to the value in FieldA in the current table, sets it to a value taken from a different field in the current table. This seems to be function of the client machine, not the server itself, as it behaves quite properly using my own client. It happened with both …

Does anyone no of a way to suppress the relookup/autoenter from happening when you duplicate a record? It would seem to me that if you want to duplicate a record, you would want an exact duplicate which isn't always the case when a relookup happens.

One of the earlier versions of FM had a nice step-through turorial in it. I don't find it in 6.0. Any idea where I might acquire it? MM

I want to show a record's record number in one of its fields. I have tried using a calculated field set equal to Status (CurrentRecordID) but when I look at it in browse mode, nothing displays in the field. Does this have anything to do with the fact that this function returns a hexadecimal number? Is there another way to accomplish this goal?

Is there any way to script directly to a field repetition using a loop and a global field (where the # of the field's repetition is obtained from the global field, which starts at 1 prior to the loop and increases by 1 during each loop), rather than by definining each repetition manually in the script itself? Now that we have email addresses for most of our contacts, I'd like to be able to automatically generate an email with the appropriate letter attached as a PDF. I have a problem with the constrain found set script step. Basically, it worked for my client, and then they 'upgraded' (still need to know the version) and now the constrain found set is no longer an option in the perform find script step. This has broken an important functionality of my database that performed finds against chained criteria between two databases. Can anyone tell me when constrained found set is not available? There does not appear anyway for me to replicate the functionality without the step. I'm running Windows XP with FileMaker 6.0. I would like to have a (Windows) scheduled task run a FileMaker script at regular intervals. I'm pretty sure this can be done with vbscript (WSH). FileMaker has an example in the help section on how to do this but it's written for VBA not VBS and I think the syntax must be a bit different between the two "vb" languages. I have a send mail script for a solution that uses Outlook Express. It mail script works on my computer but does not even call up Outlook Express on my clients PC. I have looked in the msconfig win.ini file and there is no [Mail] setup as stated necessary within FileMaker Help. How do I install this win.ini file?

Sorry, but I'm a stupid newbie. I am totally lost, but here's what I'm trying to do: I have a "yes" and "no" check box. When yes is checked, I'm trying to get a field to keep track of the number of times it is checked whether it be yes or no. For example, the database keeps track of number of jobs won and lost. I installed FileMaker Unlimited 6 and Web Server Connector on Windows 2000 Server. If I reboot the server and connect to the Web Server Connector administrator page I get prompted to respecify an administrator account and I also have to reconfigure my databases in the "Configure by Host" page. This only happens if I reboot - if I have not rebooted I'm able to access the administrator pages without re-entering the information.
