I am interested in setting up an FMP database on a local network and having people access it through the Web Publishing. First, will FMP or FMP Developer allow me to do this or do I need to get FMP Server? Second, is there any major issues I may run across or should be aware of?

I thought I was so close to getting this working... when suddenly the whole WPE comes crashing down. I can't even access the http://localhost/fmi/config screens anymore. I'm not sure what would have caused this, but does anyone have a suggestion as to what I could do to repair it? I'm using Server 7 Advanced.

Is anyone able to access more than one FM Server through Advanced Web Services? The documentation expliciting mentions using more than one server. But on two separate installations, I have only benn able to connect to the server I originally pointed at. And Yes I have entered the name and code to match that of the server. OH, on OSX server 10.4 and 10.3.8 Any ideas out there?

Hi, I'm going to pose a question that can't be completely answered because I haven't developed the requirements fully enough, but I'm just looking for folks' overall thoughts. I am planning on building a Web site to support a consulting activity, and I am trying to figure out the pluses and minuses of various technologies as I figure out my solution. Top level requirements/wants: - Customized user interface (throws out IWP) to include search capabilities using standard Boolean queries - Good security, not only access control, but may also want each clients data encrypted separately - Reasonably powerful development tools (consulting is the objectiv…

Here is the simple problem that I need to solve: I have a large database with a lot of fields that are calculated using multiple scripts. It can take hours to loop these scripts on the full database, so it would be best if these scripts could kick-off overnight and do their thing. It would seem to be a pretty straightforward request, especially since the database is hosted on FMS7. Well, after trying in vain to get this working, and then after combing through these and other forums for hours over the past couple of days, it seems that this is much more cumbersome than I would have expected! Finally, out of desperation I called FM support this morning to confirm …

Hi, I have FM7 Server Adv on OSX Server 10.3.8. Server is 'bound' to the network and I can "walk" LDAP and AD fine. I called FileMaker support and spoke with a tech. We looked at all the settings in the DIRECTORY SERVICE portion of the CONFIGURATION tab of FM Server Admin. All was good but still did not work. Then the tech finally revealed that 'they at FileMaker' have not been able to make this work. Has anyone been able to get FM7 Server on OSX to authenticate using LDAP? When I apply a Domain Group to a database and then attempt to log into that database I get an error stating that I do not have sufficient priveleges (however I gave myself full access in the Priv …

I see alot of posts about speed, and I'd like to add one to the mix. We are running FM Server 5.5, and FMPro 6. We just changed our Internet providers which prompted us to change our DNS on all of our machines. Nevertheless, the problem happens on local machines in our office. We try to open a file that also opens 6 or so related files. The files open, but when it comes to displaying the layouts on the screen, it hangs. Sometimes in upwards of 1 minute. This all just started happening around the time of the change, and I was wondering if it would be a related problem. Am I not looking in the right spot for the fix for this? We are having some people come in F…

Hi, I have created a runtime solution (approx. 30 related files)with FPP Dev6, originally to be used by a single user at a time. Now I'm trying to create a modified version for multiple simultaneous users as well(10-20 multiple locations)- the best way to this seems to host the database on a FMP server, right? The challenge is, that the client wants to restrict the access to database records based on the user, ie. all users can access all the files, but can only see the "permitted" records. Is this somehow possible with FMP Server7? Thanks in advance, Jari V

System: Windows XP Version: FM 7 Server Advanced I have read several posts on V7 Advanced & learned a lot. My problem seems rather basic compared to the others, so hopefully its obvious. I can't get the Web Services to work. When I look at the Client Options in V7 Server, my options for "Web Publishing Sessions" & "Server Advanced Settings" are disabled. I'm really screwed here. Initially, I installed V7 Server & V7 Server Advanced. I learned of the 7.03, so I "uninstalled" both Server & Advanced. One problem may be that XP didn't remove the Folders in Program Files. When I reinstalled, my personal FM files were still there. That ca…

Does anyone know the range of ports that is required for FileMaker Pro (or any FM client) to access an application remotely? The FilerMaker Server guide mentions only the ports necessary for the server (5003, 50003, 50006, 591, etc), but there is no mention of what ports the client uses to connect. Due to some recent complications, a client of mine is having to shut down ports, and needs to know what range the FM client will need open. So far, it seems to be a random port, between 3000 and 4000, but I would like to know something more specific. Officially, the only documented port for FileMaker I could find was 2399 (Data Access Layer). Any help would be g…

We've just migrated a bunch of FM5 files to FM7 Server. Having jumped through a bunch of hoops already RE: networking, enabling remote viewing of files, re-installing due to weird 'bad login' message and etc., the one final thing that seems to be plaguing us is that when we restart the server or add databases and open them, this takes SOOOOOOO long. We just restarted and tried to open a new 196KB database and it took at least 15 minutes. I am not exaggerating--it may actually have been longer. Opening the entire set of databases (something like 20ish) seems to proceed in fits and starts, some files taking a ridiculously long time, others opening fairly quickly, but I …

What's the deal with changing a global field from a client machine. It doesn't hold from session to session. If you want it sticky, do you have to quit the server and open the file on a regular FMP? If so, any better work-around? Also, love the new look, but I'm not sure the search is working well (only 1 hit for the word GLOBAL in all the forums???).

I have a DB hosted on FMS 7. It has a container field to store documents (PDFs). Users run this application from their local system (client_local). They can add files to the container fields. What I want to be able to do is to save (export) a file in the container field to the server local directory tree (file system) and replace it with a file reference to the file stored on the server. Is this possible? It seems from my limited testing that when a user is running the DB from their local client, the DB is totally unaware of the local server filesystem. Thus any scripts I write try to access the clients local filesystem. I don't want users to locally mou…

After experiencing several interuptions in service where the Web Publishing Engine went down, causing downtime for remote offices trying to access IWP as well as several PHP scripts that access different databases, I wrote my own shell script to check to see if it was still accessible. Part of the problem was that I've seen this happen where the WPE is still running, but it's no longer responding from the /fmi/config pages... I can log in, but can't get the WPE portion to respond. Sometimes it affects IWP right away, but sometimes it takes hours to eventually crash altogether. What I've done is check the web page for IWP to see if it's still returning "200 OK", …

Hi, I am using database sessions. I have had luck using the -edit command to edit a global field by -recid. Then I can retrieve the value with a query. It works fine for 15 minutes or so, but then I guess it expires and I can't restart a new session by setting a new value with -edit. It makes sense that I can't retrieve the value after 15 minutes because the session expires, but what do I need to do so I can begin a new session? So far the only thing that works is to edit the record with the files that the site assistant makes. So the site assistant works after the session expires, but my own files don't and I can't figure out why. Can anyone please he…

I am running FMSA.v2 on OS X server 10.3.9. I had several databases publishing and working great using Instant Web Publishing. I installed the v3 updates for both Server and IWP and now IWP has stoppped working. I can get to the IWP administration http://localhost/fmi/config, but the URL http://localhost/fmi/iwp returns a "not found" error. The configuration shows IWP as "on". I have rebooted and looked through the logs but nothing shows as obviously broken. Driving me crazy! Should I uninstall everything and reinstall?

Hi As far as I know, I have FM server 7 installed and configured. I have my solution file in place and opened according to the server admin utility. On the same network, I have clients running FMP7. When I go to open remote, I get nothing listed in local hosts. I tried to specify the IP, but it does not show any files listed. I can ping the server IP from a client machine. I dont know why FMP and the server won't talk. My ONLY guess is that the firewall is blocking the port, but it seems unlikely since the server and clients are on the same local internal network. I can also host files using FMP on one of the client machines. All of the other PC's can…

We are using FM Server Advanced, and data gets inserted into our database via the internet. For example our online store stuffs customer and order data from their system into our database. Works great. Later I go in and "sync" up the customer information so that users who checked the "contact me with update information" get subscribed to our mailing list database. I would like it if this sync happened automatically when a record was created in the server. How can I create a script that runs automatically on the server side when a record is created?

Hi, I am new to the forum and inherited a FileMaker Server environment for several departments. One department wants to use web publishing, so a test environment was created with FileMaker Server 7 Advanced running on MAC OSX 10.3.9 and the Web Publishing Core components. The Web server module and admin tools are installed on a Windows 2000 IIS 5 server and is used as the front end to the DB(Mac Filemaker). In order to get the pages to work, IIS 5 authentication needs to be disabled for the entire default site, which is where it is installed by default. Now, the permenant location that it will be living at will need to have authentication for the default site. A…

Hi there, I have built a new DB system with about 30 related FMPro7 databases hosted on Filemaker Server 7. I am setting up the Accounts and Privileges and I am trying to gear it so that once someone has entered their UserID/password for one of the databases they dont have to do it for every other one at the same security level. That is, once they have logged in once they dont need to do it again. The previous DB system (built in FMPro6) has some kind of system which opens all related DBs in the background but minimises them - they appear in brackets in the Window menu. I'd like to set up the same process in the new FMPro7 system.

I am using Filemaker 7 Pro and Filemaker 7 advanced to host databases. I use Filemaker site assistant to export the file into xslt code then I take the xslt code and try to change the background, but when I do try this and drop these files back on the server to host the database I get an error. When I change the code I am using either Dreamweaver or notepad, but either one makes any difference when I drop it back on the server because the file errors out when viewed on the web. If I change the file and preview it in Dreamweaver it works exactly the way I want it, but not when I go drop it back on the Server. Could someone please help.

I have been working on FMSA on my powerbook to get it working. I am setting it up on another machine so that I can look at both screens for settings, etc. However, on the second machine FMSA shuts down after just a few seconds of use. I assume that since I have the same installation code on both machines, it is stopping so that you can't use one copy on multiple servers. Is this correct? Also, now that I have taken my powerbook off of the network, I can't access the administration page any longer. I get an error message that says that I don't have access to server adminstration page. Any advice? Thank you, John C. Foster

Hi all, So we recently discovered that FM 7 (or, more to the point, FM Server 7) will not meet our needs, and are looking to back-port our databases to FM 5.5. Now, the databases that we have created do not use any new functionality - anything that we used was available in FM 5.5. Is it possible in any way to easily backport this?

I have a FM server7.03 running on an Os X.3.9 box, serving half a dozen files. At random (as far as I can tell) intervals, one of the files suddenly showes up as closed when I check in the admin app (or is unreachable when accessing over TCP/IP through clients). It affects only one file, always the same, so I suspect something is corrupted with this file, although it behaves just fine when I work with it, or there is a setting I am not aware of. I have an automated backup script that runs twice a week, but I have not been able to see a clear relation with finding a closed file... and it never closes while I am working on it.

We currently have FMP 5.5 Server Software on a Windows 2000 Server and am upgrading to Windows 2003. Is FMP 5.5 Server Software compatable with Windows 2003 Server? We have 200+ user, so an upgrade to FMP 7.0 is not in the plan, plus all my reading tells me it is not seamless and we have some very complex DBs that could not be rewritten in the required timeframe. Any inrformation is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Does anyone have any info on a version of FMP Server (I think version 6) that runs on Windows 2003? I called FileMaker directly, but they've told me I must upgrade to FM Server7 if we upgrade our server to 2003. I heard from a vendor that there is a version of server, called FileMaker Server (?no version) that works on Win 2003 (for fmp 6 files). I guess FileMaker.com is pushing people to upgrade to 7 which isn't necessary just yet. I can't find any info on this, but we need to research and probably purchase this version of FM server. I am a web developer and I am working with a filemaker developer. He has made a filemaker database that uses scripts to edit records. For example: in Filemaker you create a new record, and then you enter some text in into a field and click a button. The button triggers a script that takes an argument from a field and performs some queries, calculations, etc. My problem is this: I have to make this thing work on the web. It's easy enough to run the scripts that he has written, but these scripts are supposed to take an argument and there doesn't seem to be any way to pass an argument from the web. Any suggestions?

Our move to Server Advanced went smoothly but I remain confused about proper opening of served files. I've read that opening a file directly is very bad. I've been reading everything I can get my hands on and still have these questions. 1) Each Client has an Opener file on their station which calls (External subscript Main file startup) on host. Is this proper opening? 2) We have copy of Client on this host system (Dev7). Can I use same Opener (on host) to use for minimal rare FM use but nothing else? I was told it's okay to use Client on it, but I didn't find out HOW to open the file. 3) Prior setup required opening a few aux files (hidden) in Main Sta…

Can someone please tell me what I need to purchase to upgrade it to a "full" version of Advanced? I've been looking around and, frankly, I'm confused. I'd appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction. Thanks! -Stever

Tried to open the log file pe_application_log.txt and could not, size is over 32MB. Checked the WPE Admin program and it does not let one purge this file. Tried deleting the file in hopes that it would be recreated when access was needed but this did not work either. any suggestions would be appreciated....... Ray

OK, let's see if you guys can help me on this one... I have FM7 Server running on a dedicated machine. Clients can connect remotely no problem. I WAS able to administer the server from my laptop internally using the admin tool that comes with the Server app. Now, all of a sudden it tells me 'login failed'. Even though i never had a chance to type in a password. Nothing changed that i can think of, it just stopped working remotely. If i go to the server i can administer from there using the same admin tool. Any ideas?

When a database is hosted by FM Server 7, is there any way to schedule maintenance scripts to run? I'm talking about FileMaker scripts within the database. I don't want these scripts to run when the user logs in (too time-consuming), but rather at 3am when no one is in the system. That way they only have to run once per day, not every time someone logs in. Any thoughts??? -Rob

A little OT but I stumbled across a pretty cool site just now. Called the uptime-project which compares the uptime of servers across the world. My filemaker server's currently at about 132 days. http://www.uptime-project.net I've created a special private league on there for users of filemaker server products. I use filemaker server 5.5 on windows 2000. If you want to join my filemaker uptime league then goto the link above Register Then go to http://filemaker-servers.league.uptime-project.net/ and you can join the private filemaker server league. You'll need this password: filemakerisawesome Thanks Ben

I've developed a FMServer 7 DB for a univerity Sports Medicine dept. They are now asking for the ability to update their data off-line (e.g. while on a bus to away games) and sync the data to the Sever DB when they get on-line. Is there a FM Mobile-like process to do this? They all have cell phones - can they access the net via cell phone? Much appreciate feedback. Jan

I've put a PDF article up on the downloads section of my website on how I set up backups with FileMaker Server to create date/time stamped zip files. All with just 3 schedules: - one hourly schedule using FileMaker Server's normal backup - one hourly schedule to archive that FMS backup in a date/time stamped zip file - one hourly schedule to copy that zip file to a network share away from the FMS machine. Any and all feedback welcome! Enjoy, Wim. Connecting Data

Okay, I think this may be a foolish question, but I've searched the forms for a little while and can't seem to find an answer to my question. How does one execute a SQL statement on tables in a FM database? I've looked at the script 'Execute SQL' and it seems to be only designed to execute SQL on other databases. Is there some easy way to execute sql and, say, fill in a field value in another table with the result? Thanks for any help, Nazarre

Hi all, quick question. Probably a simple one for you FM veterans. All of the events that FM Server 5 writes to the NT application log are driving me nuts. Anyway to stop them or atleast limit it to only important error messages? Thanks, Scot

Server: Filemaker Server 7 Advanced v3 on OS X 10.3.9 Client: Filemaker Developer 7 v3 on OS X 10.3.8 For whatever reason when I try to open a remote DB the server is listed but the actual DB I created is not though I do see the sample DB. Because I had my db hosted in a non-standard location (which I did point to and was verified) I thought I would copy it to the standard location as well and still it can't be seen. Other steps information: - In Server Admin the DB is shown with a Staus: Normal - Max number files to host: 50 So any clues why I can only see the sample db and neither of the other 2? Also thought of one other thing... The DB …

I am looking for advice on setting up filemaker server. We have a windows server 2003 with about 8 machines attached over ethernet. I would like to add a mac mini to be a dedicated machine with filemaker server running and hosting a database to windows machines (mixture of windows software but mostly xp). The windows machines would obviously have filemaker pro client software. There are also several networked printers with static ip address. I am planning to upgrade mac mini to 512 mb and buy a firewire hardrive for all the backup needs. Also mac mini has cd burner for additional backup. The IT network person we use has very little experience with mac. Is this a g…

I don't know where to post this question, so I'll try here first. I have 10 separate locations that all have a membership database in FM7. The company wants to tie all the locations together. My concern is if the internet connection is slow or goes down, there is no local backup. Is there a way to sync a filemaker database between computers using Filemaker? Thanks for any help you can give me.

We have two groups using FM 5: one is a Mac group running FM server; the other is a PC group, and they run their databases off a server share (not running FM server). Both groups have been using FM in this way for several years. Now, the Mac group claims that their performance drops dramatically when the PC group uses its FM databases. The PC users have reported no performance issues. Both groups are small, about seven users each. The PC group databases are also very small, 7 databases with a total size of less than 10MB; the Mac group databases are very large. Absolutely no changes have been made to the network/server infrastructure in six months. Each group …

When the server is rebooted it cannot start Terminal services. When the database is loaded up it throws up the error 'Filemaker cannot host a file because of a network error. Files morked as Mulit-user will not be available over the network (10048)' I tried stopping and starting the fms service and restarting fileMaker pro but the error keeps coming up. Also, one of the tables cannot be found so I point it to where it is located but the next time the DB is loaded up it cannot find this file again even though I told it where it was last time. Any ideas?:

Is it possible to access FMServ7 hosted files in FM7Pro on a remote connection through the internet? I have FMServ7Adv running a few DB's and can access them through Instant WebPub, but that's slow and a couple of layouts don't work and only 5 records at a time in list view sucks. So I want to try and access the HOST/FMServer through the internet (i.e. remotely or off site) using a domain name or WAN IP address. Anyone have any knowledge if this is at least possible, or been done successfuly? I already opened and forwarded ports 5003, 50003 (the listening port) to the HOST/Server. I believe 5008 has some use as well, but can't remember. Am I in the right dir…

OK, I'm trying to automate off site backups. I've got everything set up except scheduling the task. I know I can use windows task scheduler to run my batch file, but that requires going through my IT department to let me have access to the scheduled tasks on the server. I found the Scheduled tasks portion of FMServer Admin Console, and there's a run script command. Only problem is that I can't find any documentation. The manual (Chapter 5) says to reference the FMServer Help File, well there's nothing in it that I can find. Does this feature actually do anything? Can I simply call a batch file somehow? Anybody?

Hey Gang, A couple of questions if I may.. We have a group of around 14 DB's loading into Filemaker Server of which 2 are around the 20MB mark. (They are all linked). It regularly crashes. Is this because the DB's are too big, v5 doesn't run well on OSX Server or something i'm perhaps missing. Debugging has not been fruitful, sometimes it would appear to be a timeout idle problem other times not.. 2nd.. when I stop the fmserverd I can not restart it. Error states that another instance is running. Even though ps -aux doesn't show it. I'm guessing it's a locked file or a temp file. If thats the case, where the heck is it? TIA, Will

I am new to administering FMP. We are experiencing a problem with CWP where we see crashes when users try to update their files using SiteAssistant. When the site is updated, the file becomes unusable and gives an XSL error on the file that was updated. I try restarting the web publishing engine and the filemaker server services, but this does not help. Restarting the server completely has been the only fix available. I really like the speed of CWP over IWP, but we want users to be able to edit their pages without having to restart the entire server. Has anyone seen similar problems with CWP?

Hi all, I've been searching these forums for some time now and can't seem to find an answer to my question. I need to run a script every night at midnight to export all our data to a CSV file. I have the script working (just a simple export), but I can not work out how to get this to run at midnight. I assumed it was something in the Scheduling in FMS7 but I cant work it out. It wants me to pick a script file, but all the scripts are in the database. Thanks in advance for any help...

I currently have Filemaker Server 7 setup on a Windows 2000 Server, about to be migrated to a Windows 2003 Server. It writes everything to the log, including things as trivial as a user connecting to a database. How can I change what sort of events get recorded in the log? I only want to record critical events and errors, anything else I am not interested in. Thanks very much Damo

I've got a bit of a huge problem here. I wrote a database for taking orders at my work. This morning, the database had a problem. One of the girls couldn't log on. It kept saying someone was already logged on from her computer. I thought someone must have Filemaker running on a different account, but no dice. I rebooted her computer and it didn't help. Still said someone was logged on. So I ran the server admin tool and tried to disconnect her from there. Still didn't work. So I shut down the database, rebooted the computer it was on and started it back up. That solved one problem, she could log on and enter data again. But all the data that we entered ye…

I recently set up a FM7 server that is hosting about 11 databases. When i open the d.bases from a client machine for the first time there is a considerable lag when switching between d.bases and even after the first one opens. After navigating through everything once it seems to be fine. I have redefined the file references on all files but the delay still remains. Anybody have any suggestions? Thanks in advance for any wisdom.

This is new to me, and very troubling!... I am using data from a weight field in a related table to calculate line item costs for an invoicing system. Data in the weight field is disappearing from one day to the next. Two users maintain this data (myself via FM Server and one lady who uses IWP)... Certain weights are disappearing no matter if she enters them or I enter them. Any clues?

I'm hoping someone can tell me if I've got this all wrong. We've have been using FM 5.5 for our internal business databases (eg timesheets, contacts database, invoicing etc - nothing unusual here). The files were set to multiuser across a mixed network. It all worked pretty well. Now we have taken the plunge, updating FM5.5 to 7 and buying Server 7 for improved performance. But it turns out that IWP is not part of the standard server, you have to buy server 7 advanced (I know, read the fineprint!). For a small business of 7 users this is just overkill. We already own 3 client licenses. Question is why is IWP taken out? Is this to force me to buy three additional licens…

I have a three file solution, the first file uses the other two files but FMS hides them, cannot be seen from the open remote. Do I need to have these two hidden files password protected, or just the one file than can be seen? Would make keeping passnames/words simpler as only one file would need to be updated but as medical files need to be absolutely secure.

So I've read all the documentation, and I've hit a brick wall. In all the manuals I have it shows screenshots of the FileMaker Server Admin utility which seem to have things my one doesn't. In the manuals, there are two radio-buttons which supposedly become enabled when external accounts is turned on. One says "Use local accounts and groups" and the other says "Use domain user accounts and groups". I think this second one is what I need to be enabling, however it doesn't even appear on my screen. Did FM take these options out? Or do I need to do something else to make them appear? Is there someone who has done this already on OS X Server? Thanks.

I'm just about to migrate our filemaker system over to our Open Directory server (Mac OS X Server). I'd like to know if it's possible to setup different database permissions for different groups? I want everyone (in the 'staff' group) to access most of the databases, but only a few of those people (who also belong to the 'accounting' group) to be able to access the accounting databases. Also, my databases all have the full-permissions user called 'admin', however my OS X server administrator account is also aliased 'admin'. Is this likely to confuse filemaker? Should I rename the database account 'fmadmin' or something? I'm running FileMaker SA 7 on OS X (St…

I created a database for the school I teach at. The IT Dept are having trouble making it run. When one person logs on, OK, but if another person logs on, an error msg pops up stating that we have exceeded the licence arrangements. It seems that our current setup will allow only one user of the database at any one time. They have checked the settings on FM Server and it seems everything is OK - but it isn't! Any ideas as to solving our problem will be appreciated! Frank

I spoke with a Filemaker Salesperson the other day. They said that running FM7 Adv Server, you can actually go over the 250 user limit, and make it so that my only limitation would be the physical capacity of the hardware. I've seen absolutely no documentation supporting this ascertion. Is it possible to go over 250? If so, how? Also, what is the difference between "sharing FileMaker solutions over the web with up to 100 simultaneous users" and "sharing databases with 2 to 250 simultaneous users" ... which is what is stated on FM's website about FM7 Adv? Thanks, The Snail

After pulling most of my hair out, I finally got FileMaker Server 7 Advanced working with Instant Web Publishing. I made a test database and successfully accessed it. Then I added several other databases to the server. Some I can access fine, others I can't access, and others don't even show up. In the FileMaker Server Admin Tool, all the databases have a status of normal. In the Web Publishing Admin Console, only some of the databases show up, but they all have a + under IWP. I have 5 databases working fine. Another one shows up, but asks me to login. It won't take my username and password. I activated the guest account, but it still asks me for a userna…
