Dear all, Why could I just open one folder on the host? ..is there a case we can chose two folders or more and open that on the host. In my case, I chose only one folder only. When we put many files on the host ...we have to use a dialog-host the the time for value list ..relationship ...script? Is that correct with my understanding about host? We don't link physically but we link through dialog-host? Thanks

I have a report which sould be run off on the last day of a month (I forgot!!). Now it is November, fields have recalculated, and I can't run the October report off. Is it possible / advisable to change the date on FM Server back to 31/10/2002, and if so would I also need to change the date on the relevant workstation?

We are testing a newly set up a Filemaker server running v.5. When I remote access the files there appears to be no problem, all available files appear in the administration window. If I then close a file using remote administration, it disappears from the folder (as it should) and is then visible in the window which appears when the Open File button is clicked but if I select the file and click ok I get an error message saying the file cannot be opened. If Server is restarted the file is open again. Any suggestions as to what the problem may be? Peter

Does anyone have a method of putting simulated, "worst case scenario" load on the FMP Server? We are currently planning on increasing the users from 20 to 120 in the next few months. We would like to try to simulate this if possible so we can see if any change in performance will occur. (both by user perspective, and server resources). We are using Windows NT Server 4.0 with FMP Server 5.0. I believe the server is quite adequate: Hardware Model = Compaq Proliant 1850R Processor(s) = (2) Intel Pentium II Ram = 200 MB Hard disk(s) = (3) 4.3 MB Physical Disk Disk Controllers - RAID config = Hardware RAID 5 NIC Model(s) = Compaq Netelligent 10/100 T…

I have a situation where I am accessing/managing an FMPro 5.5 solution remotely. The Solution is on a Win2K Pro box running FM Pro Server 5.5 behind a Cisco Pix Firewall. I can acces the files, and add/remove data but when I go into Layout Mode and change something and go back to browse mode the communicatiuon is lost. It also happens if I add a field. Is complete remote administartion possible with Win2K Pro or does it absolutley need Win2K Server.

I've been struggling with a solution which I'm building. It has a Main File which sort of acts like a Main Menu, and many secondary files which get called through scripted buttons. It was working great as I built it, but now that I'm ready to test it out on an FMP Server, it is giving me much grief. First, the scripts which call other files seem to be looking locally on the client's machine. So I re-scripted almost all of the links I could find to open a specific (Hosted) file where I hard wired the IP it should look for to open the hosted file. This made me quite nervous, in that my iMac running the Server gets its IP Dynamically. However, I figured I'd sort out tha…

We're running FileMaker Server on a Xserve running Mac OS X Server 10.2.1 ("Jaguar"). I can't start the FileMaker Server using the Config.app-Application! When I click "Start Server", nothing happens. I then wrote a Startup Items, so that FMS starts automatically on reboot. Doing like this, it works - I can connect with clients to the server, but when I start Config.app, it tells me the server is *not* running!!?! Backups get done, but the remote administration always reports "wrong password", even when I type it in correctly! It seems rather strange to me. Has anyone else a similar experience? Or does it work for others in this same configuration? Any help is wel…

More FMS 5 woes. We run 5 Mac servers (OS 9.1) on cross platform 100 base T network. One server (G4 400MHz/128mb) FileMaker quit unexpecedly last week damaging some large files (40 to 112 mb). Did recovery, clone, import (the works). (even replaced the software) Now some PCs lose connection to server (no Macs). Host window cannot locate, but can ping server. Service will come back on eventually, then drop again. Sometimes one file, sometimes the whole server. All others users are normal. At wits end. Server set to 80 clients (40 active today) , Files 100 w/ 82 open. HELP!

I have remote users accessing a database on our server from home. She claims that if her connection to the server is unexpectedly broken (even though the server is still running fine) she loses the data that she typed in during the session. My understanding is that the server caches everything and permanently writes cached data to file whenever the system is idle or when the system reaches the cache flush limit (which in this case is 15 minutes). So only a server crash would cause the loss of data... not an unexpected loss of connection to the server. Can anyone confirm or deny this assessment? Thanks, Tony Andrews

We are attempting to get a working online bookstore. We just tried to upgrade to FM server 5.5 on a Win2000 machine. The web companion is on an imac. After upgrading to 5.5 server, the web companion shut down about every hour. So we downgraded to server 5.0. The web companion shuts down once a day at random times. What is happening? Note: The win2000 server is a 200MHz machine that also runs IIS to serve up a folder of PDFs accessed by the bookstore.

Hey, There have been many articles written on optimizing FMServer on OS9. They have been a big help. But now I find myself installing FMServer on some nice shiney OSX boxes. What can I do to optimize? Specifically, Is there a way (or a need) to keep Server in the foreground, like in 9? Would it be worth my time to 'renice' server? that is increase the priority? TIA Jerry

I have a solution that is served on a PC that has an age feature. Everyone is no longer aging. Ponce might appreciate dilemma; I think FM has aged me at an increased rate. I also use a pop up field with today's date that uses the "Today" calculation. Each morning it should calculate today's date; this too has discontinued. Hi, i;ve successfully installed FMP Server 5.5 on our Linux server but I'm getting a error mesage when I try to start it. It says: Error opening log file: Permission denied Now, I've gone and made sure the privs on /var/log/fmserver are ok and the directory is writable. Since there is no log file in there to start with I created Events.log via touch and set the ownership and privs correctly but still the same problem. I've also gone and commented out the log directory variable in the fmserver.conf file to see if I could turn off loggin. Still no go. Hi !, I have several databases running from Fm server 5.5 (PC, win 2000 pro). One particularly is missing records (invoices), I though they accidentally were deleting records, so I eliminate the privilege of deleting records to all passwords (except the master which they dont' have), once again one invoice is missing (I can see the gap in the RecordID), just last week the record was shown in one report, now that the same report is generated the invoice is missing. any clues? The clients are FM 5.5 for PC, over TCP/IP

Hello, I am in the process of converting my company over to OS X and have installed FM Server for OS X and it seems to be running great (it sure does look different - but it's the running that matters). We are going to be consolidating 3 FMservers that we have into 1 server with multiple processors. We need to know if there is a way for us to get around the 100 open file limit that FMServer has. Can we install multiple instances of FMServer and therefore get 200 or more file limit? Has anyone done anything similar to this and have some advice that they can give? I would appreciate any info that you can offer. Thanks, John

Hi, we're using server 5 on a W2000 server with about a dozen files served to 25 users in a standard Windows domain. We've been running it a couple of months with no problems. Access from a 5.5 client is as usual through the File/Open Remote/Hosts dialogue, and the server was up until now always visible as a local host when in the same domain (subnet). Yesterday the server was no longer listed as a local host. I am able however to connect using the "Specify server" option, and directly typing the IP address. I can furthermore make the server become visible again as a local host by restarting the service on the server; but after doing this twice it again di…

Dear All, I would like to know since we have a filemaker server for 10 seats. The speed is slow down and we don't really know why? ...Is it that we install badly ? or we share the files incorrectly. Is it the correct way to share files? I am really in need of this question. Thanks

Hello all. I must say I wish I were back in my cozy CDML world. Server is killing me. The solutions are being hosted on 2 G4s, each running os x server, 1 running server 5.5, one running FMU 5.5. Problem is, when you boot up FM server 5.5., it automatically stops within a couple of seconds. As well, it doesn't open up any DBs. We have disabled everything we can possibly think of on the FM Server, to no avail. Any suggestions? FM people are being stinky b/c they "don't support" installing FM Server on os x server. me

I am planning to buy FileMaker Server, but I runned a trial version and crashed at least twice a day. (error message: unrecoverable error (10)) I was told that this is a memory issue, and if I installed Mac Os X this wouldn't happen. (I am quite reluctant to install OS X, but I can't afford crashing, not even once a day) My question therefore is if I should install Mac Os X and go for the OS X FileMaker Server version (the computer that would host the databases is a G3, and the machines that would access the FM server are most of them G4, with Mac Os 9.2), or otherwise the problem above could easily be solved and continue with OS 9. Thanks

Yesterday all FM files where shut down for routine weekly maintenance like Recovery and backup. Apart of that FM Server is doing automatic backup several times a day. After I started the FM Server Service on W2000 Server, FM server 5 didn’t open all files -- from the same directory. Directory is 1 level down from FM server directory. Does anybody experience the same problem? We tried starting files manually from remote FM server management and server didn’t open them again. We open those Recovered files in FileMaker client without any problems and then we tried to open them again through remote management and it worked. My resume is…

I am in the very early stages of planning a web enablement project and one of the concerns is this: What happens to the web clients when the FileMaker Server pauses to run it's backup script? Currently the sum of our FileMaker Databases is about 1.2 gigabytes. This takes about 15 minutes to copy over the network. We know internally when this is about to happen because of the FileMaker Server message stating that a scheduled backup is about to occur, but what happens to the web browser clients? How has anyone else managed this?

Does anyone know if the existence of a backside cache (L2/L3?) on a Mac running FMServer 5.5 (OS9 or X) make for a large performance difference? I have been considering a G4 800MHz w/o backside. I cant access the fmbench site search to see if there is a comparison of the 733 with and without. Filemaker cust service says no it uses the system RAM much more but some other benchmark sites (barefeats) seem to think that it makes a big difference in database applications. If anyone has fmbench exports they can email me i would appreciate it. Thanks

I'm running FM Server on 8.6, and my client machine (my own laptop) is running OSX 10.1.2; I was exporting a 400MB database from the server onto my laptop when I ran out of disk space. I got the "out of space, trying to find space in the file" error and I cancelled via command-period. However, FMPro on my laptop hung (or it was proceeding very very slowly) so I performed a force-quit on it. The server is right next to me, and the first thing that happened was the server shut down - we've got an auto-reboot dongle on the server, so maybe FMServer just crashed, but nevertheless, it is a bit worrying to me that a client machine can force-quit and the result can be that the s…

A friend of mine has been running a FMP solution (around 30 files, v5.5, all Wintel machines) via FM Server 5.5, on a NT 4.0 machine (sp 6). He recently switched it from a P3 to a P4 machine, with everything else (OS etc.) identical. The problem is that now FM is running significantly slower, to the point of being useless. When he takes FM off the machine, it works just fine, but when he puts it back on the problems reappear. Does anyone have any ideas, suggestions as to what he should look at, consider, etc. to solve this. Many thanks.

Hi guys and gals, I'm running FileMaker Server 5.0 on a dedicated NT workstation. A bit basic this one but hey we can't all be technically minded! We are currently running Filemaker Pro 5.0 on 4 PCss with one of the PCs acting as the host. The database is now getting quite large with one of the db's having 22000 records each containing a resume / cv. Our PCs seem to have slowed down over the last few months and I am wondering if this is due to Filemaker operating in a 'peer to peer' manner and utilising the resources on all four PCs. If so will FM Server rectify this problem and if not is there any advantage to us purchasing FM Server at the moment? Oh, by the way, all four PCs are running on Windows 2000 Pro. …

I have a client that is located 3 hours from me and we set up a dedicated server just for FMP...they are PC and I am Mac...and originally I was going to remotely administrate their database using Timbuktu...but I've come across a better solution I just thought I'd share. Using the VPN client I'm able to take over and view their server from any PC web browser. So I've been using Virtual PC on my Mac to connect to their server at night...I move a copy of their database files to my iDisk (which is mounted on their server). I can then download (drag and drop) the files to my Mac in a few minutes...make changes...copy them back and update their database. It is also…

Recently I had to look through an "Event Log" file from my FM Server. I noticed that some of the commented lines had a number appended - in this case 17, but I've also had 15. Does any one know what the numbers are. Error codes, perhaps ? Is there a reference listing ? TIA

My office uses a product developed in File Maker Pro 5.5. We are running FMP Server 5.5v2 on Mac OS X 10.1.4. We encounter a particular problem when using a Mac OS X client. I have spoken with the vendor and they have duplicated the problem and verified that it only occurs when both the Mac OS X client and server are running FMP 5.5. This happens with both 5.5v1 and 5.5v2, and under various version of Mac OS X. Problem: There is a database file named Contacts and it will not automatically open. When the client attepts to open this automatically the user is presented with an option to open the file manually. Manually opening does work, but makes it unrealistic t…

We are running FM Server 5.0 on serveral Mac G4s running OS 9.x. We have had several cases where Filemaker unexpectedly quits. Would FM Server run better on a real server computer, what about Server OS?

Does anyone have experience with having a database system hosted on a server in say Europe and at the same having the set of files hosted in e.g. Asia. Global management of course would like to get global reports out of the combined data.... Is it possible to synchronize data between multiple servers? So all records are available and therefore reportable on both servers. Two other related questions are: 1st, how does FM treat web-users; if 75 users connect through the web does the server 'see' this as 1 (FM unlimited) user or are really 75 out of the max. possible 250 (Windows) user connections in use? The 2nd question: does FM have problems with Japanese …

Hi all. We've been having some problems with our server crashing. The machine is an older beige G3 tower, using FM Server 5.5 on OS 9.1. The dolt who set the server up did the following things, each of which caused a separate crash over the first few days of operation: 1. Virtual Memory was on. 2. There were multiple copies (3) of FM Server on the drives. 3. There were multiple copies (5) of the databases - not a crash, but a problem. 4. A backup system involving Toast Titanium allowed Toast to prevent the automated power cycle at night. Now, for reasons beyond my control (for now) this same moron is still at work, and there…

Hello, I have installed a FMS 5.5 on a W2K Server which have two NIC Cards (with two TCP/IP Adresses in two LANs). On the Administrator FMS Console, i must specified a preferred TCP/IP Address, so the FMS is only ready on this TCP/IP address. On the other Card, FMS is not responding (port TCP/IP 5003 down). Can I activate FMS on the second card, or just not specified a preferred adress ? Bests regards. G. ETIENNE (France)

I'm running FM Server 5.0v2 on W2K SP2. Everything has been running fine until yesterday. I made a registry change for an unrelated issue that I was having on this machine, rebooted, and FM service failed to start. The event log error is: TCP/IP network initialization failed; the TCP/IP address is already in use or an address could not be obtained. (10048) The reg change I made was adding a new key to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftRpc I have since removed the key and restarted but still no luck. This seems very stange as all other networking components are working properly. The IP address of the FM server machine is NOT in use …

From time to time some of the users on our network get disconnected from FM Server - typically those at the remote end of our WAN. No dount this is due to traffic demands on the network. I looked at the "Server Event Log" file and found that when the users got disconnected the reason also has a number (in brackets) at the end. In this case (17). Does any one know what the numbers are (error codes ??). Is there a list available ?? TIA

I don't know if anybody here can or is prepared to help me a little, I have just upgraded to OSX and to filemaker 5.5 to run on it. We also run Filemaker server version 5 on our NT server. Unfortunately the Server Admin Plugin from version 5, won't work on OSX. Filemakers advice was to either upgrade the server to 5.5 (which I don't really want to do atm) or downgrade to OS9 (duh) they won't supply a replacement plugin seperately. So the question is does anyone have 5.5 Server Admin Plugin they could send me to try, or somewhere to download it from?? I'd really appreciate it??

I am looking for a server to run Filemaker server 5.5 on. It is going to be used for our main contact/subscription database and will be accessed by 40+ people at any one time. The database has 7 main files. Main file has 27 fields and 10,000 records when compleated There are 5 other files with under 30 fields all with 10,000 fields growing by 2,000 fields a year. There is also going to be another file with 95 field and 2,000 records growing at 3,000 records a year. I am looking for a windows 2000 server to fit in with our current network infastructure. Can anyone recommend a minimum system specification I should be looking at…

I am trying to use a batch file to open a file called "ScriptScheduler.fp5". The batch file works perfectly when run from the DOS command line, but won't run from the Task Scheduler. I've tried moving the batch file ("Script.bat") into the WINNT directory, but it didn't make any difference. Does the batch file need to reside in the same directory as the .FMP file that I want to open?: The batch file (Script.bat): start "c:program filesfilemakerfilemaker pro 5filemaker pro.exe" "c:winntprofilessommelpdesktopScriptScheduler.fp5" What am I doing wrong here?

I wasn't here to witness this, so my facts are a little sketchy. We've got a dozen FMP clients hooked up to FM Server. It has all been working reasonably well. This morning at 11, suddenly (apparently, according to the hysterical shop owner) the machines stopped connecting to the server - the error they were getting was that the DB they were looking for was single-user and was being used. But the files are all multi-user, and anyway Server is set to serve single-user files. On the telephone I told the owner to reboot the server, and by the time I got to the site, everything was working fine. I've been looking at the server log, and nothing really stands out. The data…

I realize this may be a RTFM question, but here goes: On FM Server, I've got a search routine where users can build a list of selected items via a global field. It seems to me that there should be a conflict between users - i.e., if one user has selected an item, it should be selected for anyone else currently doing a search. It seems (I haven't had the time to do a real debug on this) to do this sometimes. Are global fields stored locally on the client machine? Are they stored on the server? I'm a bit confused. thanks Stanley

Hi there, I have a problem in a search field on a server running on a FileMaker Pro Server. The problem is that using the Find command on an entry that I know exist can't be found. If I use the same database (s) using FileMaker Pro "file sharing" there is no problems. The search will find the records...? This is very strange! Client: FileMaker Pro 5.5v1 MacOS 9.2.2 Server: FileMaker Pro Server 5.5v2 MacOSX Any help would be appreciated.

Anyone know of a way to leave FileMaker Server 5.5 running without having the administrator logged into the OS X computer it's running on? Our FM server is going into a 'secure' server room shared by administrators from various departments and I would like to prevent the casually curious from easily browsing the contents of the server. The only option I can think of is to require a password to clear the screensaver, but I would rather not have to leave the Administrator account logged into the machine at all if this is possible.

I don't know if anyone is experiencing this. We have FM Server 5.5 running on a G4. During peak times, when someone initiates a find, they have been getting the "network" cursor which stalls their session, as well as the server. This has been happening everyday now for the past few weeks. - We have 68 dbs running with an average of about 40+ users accessing them. - We have tried recovering EACH file, just in case something was damaged. - We have read through the performance section of the FM Server manual and everything appears correct. - We actually just recently switched our files to another seperate server and the problem still persists. I don't …

We're really increasing what we do with FM and how much useage it'll get. Right now it's on my old PII266 which is just a butchered together computer. So far it's done great, but here's what's next. Primary DB, ~10,000 records 86 fields apiece (ya i know) Currently with 7,000 records it's at 13mb. About a dozen child DB's each under 3mb 10,000 more records there. These databases will be growing fast, but not too much in them. 5 client computers doing simple text input. 1 automation which will be running a script every few mintues. Script run times take from a few seconds, to several mintues (find for records). Those will be run in off pea…

We've got a strange problem happening. On each client machine there is a DB in the startup items which automatically runs a script opening the appropriate remote DB, then runs a remote script. This works fine. However, every now and then these scripts alter themselves. (We've had electrical problems, power outages, etc., but it doesn't always seem to coincide.) What occurs is that the startup script suddenly no longer points to the remote DB and remote script, but rather points to itself. This only seems to happen on the Macs. What it means to us is that the startup scripts are no good. I suppose the solution is to remove the scripts from the startup folders and require…

I'm setting up a script to run every x mintues. Unfortunatly, the only computer that I can dedicate the running of the script to is my server. Will i be asking for it if i'm running FMP on my FM server? The script will run every 10-15 mintues, doing a check mail, parsing information, etc. It's procesor intensive for maybe 15 seconds each time it does the check mail (loads in about 20 e-mails, and deals with the information in the accordingly). The most other clients that will be logged in via the network are 3, and all are on a LAN. Thanks -j

I have several users working with a FileMaker Server hosted database who are complaining that they are being disconnected frequently. The most common message seems to be: Communication with the host was interrupted and could not be re-established(-3259) (Close File). This is on a Blue G3 Tower running OS 8.6 and FileMaker Server 5.0v2. AppleShare IP is running as well. I just disabled the Energy Saver control panel in an attempt to see if that has any effect. I believe I have eliminated any network issues as all other IP services are functioning normally at times when users are unable to connect. Any ideas would be appreciated. Tony Andrews

I run FMP 5 on an NT server with FMP Server 5. When some one has a file open, and I need to make changes on the file, I am unable to do so until that person closes the file. Is there any way I can give my self "King" status and throw them off so I can make the changes with out tracking them down and having them close the file. I want to be able to do this from my work station. (I am the administrator of this system)

I'm running FM server with several clients. I was wondering, which computer does the processing? Judging by network traffic, it seems that the guest is doing most of the processing, but I could be wrong. My other reason for wondering is that my host is only a 266mhz, while all my guests are 866mhz+. THanks -j

I am new to FM Server and I may be doing something wrong. BUT the settings I enter in the FM Server Preferences never get saved, regardless of whether I change them while the server is running or not. On subsequent start they always revert to the default settings. Also, the backup schedule never gets executed. The server stops when the time to do the backup comes but nothing happens. Also, the server frequently stops for no apparent reason after a few minutes of running. Now, I have these problems only on my Mac running OSX (I am logged in as root) but not on my Windows machine. There everything works just fine. Any ideas?

I am using FM Server 5.5 running on Mac OSXserving 50+ files to 150+ users with great results. My uptimes are in the order of months not days like my 9.x.x Server. I solved the backup problem by wrtiting a shell script to pause and backup my databases. Performance has increased by a very small margin but seems to deliver better perfomance than 9.x.x when under heavy load. It just runs all the time. No problems EVER. I cannot say that about my 9.x.x server. My 2

Hey kids. Somewhere on this forum - can't remember where - I read that it can cause problems if you have FMServer running on the same computer as a client version. I was wondering if anybody could confirm this, and let me know what the problems are. We have a Windows NT 4.0 server running FMServer 5.0 (as a service, of course), and we also have Web interfaces for some of those files. So, we had to put FMUnlimited 5.0 on the same machine. Is this a problem? Is there some way to share the files over the intranet with unlimited access, without actually having FMUnlimited running? I'm a little worried. Thanks. Paul
