FP server OS9 I am only guessing this is where I should be posting my question. I recently put all db on a server to host through out the company, which is located in another area in the building. When I launch the program, I am a guest. This will not allow me to change from multi-user to single user mode, or view any password settings, even though I have the master password?:? Is this standard server settings? Do I have to do all the changes from the location the files are being hosted from?, or is there another way?

Anyone know of any conflicts with FMServer and Windows 2003 server? Has anyone used this setup? We are planning on installing Windows 2003 server on our new servers. It gave us good performance boosts with SQL Server and we are hoping the same with FMP. John

I just got off the phone with Technical Support........ I had a series of databases over the last couple of months that have been closing incorrectly but when I recovered them it said that everything was fine. Today, the server just shut down one of the files, so I decided to call technical support. This tech told me that I had to do the following procedure! Find a really old backup. Clone it. Recover it for the structure. Make changes to it so it matches the current version. Export the data in a merge file. Import the data to the clone. Recover it. And then put it back out there. Since I thought the recovery process was really re…

I need advice badly. I have two FMP databases, the first has one related file (one to many), and the other has three interrelated files (main file is one to many in file B, while files C & D are lookup files to control actions of file . The main file in both databases contains information about cancer patients, their relations/friends, and donors to a non-profit organization providing free support to recovering cancer patients. These two databases were created in FMP 3 and converted to FMP 4 (I intend to convert the resulting files to FMP 5.) They were independently created to run on a pair of Macintosh PCs, and were stand alone applications. They share a great …

Hey kids, FMServer 5.0 on Windows NT. I haven't done anything in the FMServer Console in months. Just tried to now, and I can't access anything. The console comes up, but when I click on one of the icons (e.g. Database hosting), nothing happens. Any ideas? Thanks, Paul

When administrating a FMServer remotely, there are 3 databases. There is FM_Admin, FM_Usage & FM_Data. What is the FM_Data database supposed to show? Mine is only showing Host Minutes and nothing else. How is this database used? I can't get to it from the FM_Admin database can I? I know its there for a reason, I just haven't been able to figure out what that reason is. Thanks, John

We are looking to migrate from System 9.2 server to an OS X server with Filemaker Server 5.5. We have about 10 people using FMP 6.0 from their (currently all System 9.2) Macs with light to moderate usage of about 20 shared databases. What is the best way to go about this? Can/should I run FMS 5.5 under OS X Server? Can I run it on my OS X Server under System 9.2? Is that a better way to go? Any and all help is appreciated.

We installed FM Server 5 a couple of weeks ago and it has been working great. I set the Guest related properties in the FM Console to not disconnect guests idle for any amount of time. I did this because we have a machine running FMP Unlimited that needs to maintain a connection all the time. Last night the server disconnected several guests stating that they had been idle. I checked the properties and they haven't changed from what I set originally. Why would the server do this out of the blue? Does anyone have any idea why it would have done this? Thanks, John

I have a bunch of FM dbs running on 2 FmServers on my network - for some reason I can no longer see these servers when starting up FMPro on a different machine and pressing "hosts" in the open file dialog... DNS is ok, pings are fine, I can traverse accross the network and access the databases on the servers via the F$ admin share ( didn't open just making sure no network funny stuff was going on.) I can dump the IP address in there but since we have everything distributed accross 2 servers it chokes whenever it wants a db living on server # 2 - None of my other LAN connected boxes have this problem except for this one Terminal Server machine I am referring to... …

I have several databases being hosted on FM Server 5.5. I want to run a Crystal report against a database that is being hosted. I created a FMP ODBC data source. In the configuration of the data source, it allows you to use a remote connection. You then specify either the server name or IP address. I get this all set up and then go into Crystal and try to see the databases using the ODBC data source I just creatd. It gives me an ODBC error. Should I be able to do an ODBC call to a FMP database hosted on a FM Server or do I have to have the database open on a client and access the database locally on the client? It seems like to me that I should be able…

Okay, I tried this on the general forum and am not getting anywhere so I'll take a shot here. I am familiar with FM since v1. I am totally lost with server. I have a number of machines 98, 2000, xp, networked together and I use Novell on a server. That's where most of our files are. So we go to the server - disk F:, G: or H: to get or give files. FM recommended FM server. SO I installed it on a new machine that's running 2000. I followed instructions to allow remote admin. Basically I can't do a thing with it. How do I find the machine from my workstation? Hosts doesn't even show it. How do I copy files from my Netware server (like from disk H:fmfiles} to the new FM Serve…

Whenver we shut the server down that is hosting 25 files one or more become damaged and have to be recovered! It's crazy, it's seems to be random files. The log appears to be closing files then confirming the closure and usually one file ends up with a could not close possibly damaged error. What the heck is happening here!!! Anyone else see this?

Hey all! We've been using FMS 5.5v1 on our MacOS X 10.2 Server for quite a while now. Since we have the 'regular' corruption problems, we figured, some scheduled backups during the day would entlighten our life a lot. So i put up a few schedules for backing up at certain times of the day (ie. 12.30 lunch start) to have FMS make a backup of the databases to a folder on a separate disk. No problem you'd say, but the weird part is, it doesn't backup! :S One schedule has run once, the other 3 have never. All schedules are enabled and the 'Run Schedules' menu item is checked on. Searching this forum, i couldn't find any earlier occurrence of this problem (i…

Not only is OS X Server completely un-stable, reproducing issues to test work arounds is nearly impossible. Server has now taken to crashing sporadically when backing up to a fire wire drive. Well at least it produces a concatenated crash log with stack dump info called: fmservd.crash.log. I guess FMI left debug info on in this release.

I've got FM server on an iMac server with three clients on the network. Two powerbooks and another iMac. One of the powerbooks and the iMac can both access the files without issue. The other powerbook client has upgraded to FM 6 and can't access the files at all. The list of files comes up under local hosts, but when we tried to open any of them, the password screen flashes for about a second and then disappears and then nothing happens. We even copied the files to his hard drive off of the server and had the same issue,,, Additionally, when we try to go to preferences in Filemaker, the screen pops up for a second and then disappears. We sat there and reinstalled FileMake…

We are upgrading 2 of our FMServers. If we give the new servers a different name then our old servers, how does FMP deal with that? Will it automatically link files up with the new name when we bring the databases online? I first thought was that it would not deal with it nicely but I wanted to confirm. If we need to, we can give the new server the same name as the old. It would be much nicer if we can give it a new name. Thanks for any input you can offer. Thanks, John

Running FMServer 5.5 on Windows 2000 server on a couple of very specific instances I ALWAYS get a server crash. Just curious if anyone else experiences these and knows why. When I spoke to FM on both of these items, they suggested I run FM server on a Win2000 Pro machine stand-alone. Funny thing, when I moved the dbase to a Win2000 Pro machine and ran it stand-alone, the same thing happened. (I subsequently moved back to the server for file management purposes.) 1) Importing data into a file from a DBF, XLS, etc. if there are other folks in the file. This one is easy enough to work around by writing a script checking for other users in this file... Still i…

I've recently changed from OS9 to OSX for my FM Server. I've had nothing but headaches. 1. (I'm just wyning here) How to get into the remote admin is not clear, the manual did not help. 2. (Real problem) Of the 60 or so databases regularly hosted, one always becomes un-hosted for some unknown reason. At least once a day I get call from someone trying to use it, and find its gone offline. 3. (Yet another real problem) I am using 5.5v1. I tried the 5.5v2 updater but when I ran it, it failed -- at the end of the update, it would say "Update did not complete because of an error". After that the server would launch but never start hosting files. I had to reinsta…

After having installed MacOS X Server 10.2.4 and Filemaker Server v 5.5 with the update applied onto the new Xserve... we are still having major issues with Filemaker Server's Scheduler being able to run the automated backups (either locally or across the network). Filemaker Server does this easily on OS 9. In my opinion also, it seems reasonable to think that a script could be written as a "work-around" to mount the Xserve, copy the files (to be backed up) across the network, then unmount the Xserve. The problem is that you cannot copy/backup the databases while Filemaker Server is open or else major corruption is likely. Secondly Filemaker Server 5.5 is not Ap…

Hi all, I have a Filemaker Server running on MacOS X 10.2.6 and I experience some strange problems when using more than one client. For example: every client gets his own record when loggin in to a database. So when a user logs in to accounts receivable, he or she gets one record. The strange thing here is that when a second user logs in, the screen of the first user will refresh and he will see the record of the second user. I was told that each user get's and keeps his own found set, but i give a "go to related record:show only related" script command to give the user only his records. In this way, he can't screw up the records from other users. I didn't try anythi…

Anyone ever figure out why FM Server 5.5 on OS X does not back up files sometimes? We have a dedicated dual G4 running FM Server for users. I have also set up a redundant server that is a kind of lab, to do testing before releasing updates. It sits byself in it's own little network (just connected to one other computer via CAT-5 cable). Anywho ... the lab set up is exactly the same except it's a single G4 tower. They are both supposed to be backing up files to a fire-wire hard drive and various intervals. The "live" DB does this flawlessly (knock on wood!), but the single G4 hardly ever backs up correctly. And I'll go so far as to take the exact files that w…

We run FMP Server 5.02 on an OS 9.2.2 machine and found that it did NOT like being on the same server that was serving the AppleShare IP. Now I've moved my Appleshare server to OSX Server. We are currently running FM Server on OS 9 with about 60 databases being served and want to move to OSX. At the same time, we have a machine that gets used to run a series of daily scripts involving FM client, and would like to move the server onto that same machine (G4 dual 500). We have noticed under 9 that running the server and the client on the same machine leads to *huge* slow down that makes the server nearly unusable. Is this true for OSX as well? Would a dual 500 have enough muscle to run these both at the same time, or should we bump up to something more powerful? Also, does the OSX version of FM server allow command line access to databases/scripts? …

We ran into the problem of damaged files using FMServer on an OSX server. We have our shared files in a directory that is also set up as a share point so that we can get to files and edit them. Unfortunately, somebody mounted the share point and opened a bunch of the files without first closing them down in FMServer*. Instant chaos - damaged file warnings, users being booted off randomly, can't open file warning (all occurring at random intervals for different users) - ensued. Pretty much the type specimen of Not Fun. The fix seemed to be to shut the server down, and then recover each and every one of the files. Apparently, the recovered files must then …

I've walked into a situation where the client is HUGE. Using FM 3.0 for the last 7 years with a very nice interface they built way back then. Now it is so big that they need to move on to Oracle. BUT before they can move on they need FM stabilized. Over the last few months they have lost thousands of records due to FM crashing. Plus data is being corrupted. Upon initial inspection, I think the problem is that the db is just too large for FM to handle and for the hardware they have. I haven't used FM since the early days and am trying to come back up to speed on it. ugh. Anyway, any ideas on what would be causing files to cross contaminate othe…

We working on moving from eBase 1 to eBase 2. If you haven't heard of it, it's a free donor and contact managment database for the the nonprofit community. eBase 2 requires Filemaker Server. However, it looks like there are some problems with Filemaker server on OS X, and a Mac server costs more anyway. I suggested that we setup a windows box to be the server. Hi All, I am running a FileMaker Server 5.5 (v2) on Mac OS X (10.2.4). Even though the server starts automatically on reboot (files hosted on the FM Server can be accessed locally/remotely), the FMServer Config still shows that the FileMaker Server is Stopped ! Recently we've upgrade our FMServer from 3 to 5.5. The system it's running on is a W2000 SP3, 500MHz, 320MB RAM, local RAID5 storage, dual LAN connection. Hosting 18 db files of together around 250MB for an average 20 users. Since the upgrade the overall system performance is really bad compared to the old FM3. Most insert and updates now take a couple of seconds where it used to be 'instant'. Sometimes FM even seems to hang for 10-20 seconds before an update is accepted. We've already played with various settings and monitoring numerous system counters we have notices that the server is 'eating' through it's system cache. FM is configured with a fixed 20MB …

Hello Everyone... My boss is convinced that we are experiencing data loss in our Point Of Sale database. Every so often we can't find a record, we have a paper copy of this record, but it is no longer in our database. The database is setup so every script that is executed in the database is logged (activity watcher) So if i create and invoice it will say in the log that I created it and the invoice #. When we look in the log for the invoice that no longer exists in our system, we can't find even the creation of the record. We are running OS X.2.4 with FM Server 5.5v2? We've recently installed FM Server 5.5 on a Windows NT4 server. I'm needing to clear my application event log just about monthly because of tons of messages being written by FM. Most of them are not what I would consider 'Event worthy': - User "yyyyy" [xxx.0.1.251] closing a connection. - Pausing all writes to file "zzzz.FP5", now safe to back up this file. I've looked, but cannot find any way to have FM stop sending these messages to the log, but I'm sure there is a way. Before you go there, we're in an FDA regulated environment, so changing the Event Log settings to do things like overwriting old messages is not an option. Thanks, Mike

I searched through the forum and did not find anything for this. Here's the skinny: Small FM app (20 dbs) being served on FMS 5.5v2, Beige G3, OSX 10.1.5. Desktop running FMP 6.0v4. There are also 8 local dbs. Links were set for these files to point back to the host machine. They do not appear to be saved as everytime the user signs on, they are asked to locate the dbs. Manually going in with the admin PW and re-establishing the links in the scripts and relationships does not help either. This db system has been running (with upgrades) for 9+ years and this never happened prior to OSX. Previously, when a change was made, the link would have to be re-established …

I have never used FM server to backup my databases. I currently use Retrospect to backup files nightly. However, I would like to start using Server to backup a few times a day. My questions: Will the backup feature cause problems by creating a duplicate of the database files? Are these files compressed at all? Will the backup process cause any problems for users currently using the databases? Thanks.

Please help, I am trying to write an applescript on a Mac OS Xserver that will start up the FileMaker Server software along with some filemaker files on reboot. This is so if the server crashes I will not have to go in and manually open FileMaker Server and all the files it is serving. Not all the filemaker files on the Xserver are to be served, so I must specify the files to be served on reboot. The applescript I wrote so far that works (only in that it starts the FileMaker software but does not open the file being specified - i.e. testing.fp5) follows: tell application "Finder" activate application "FileMaker Pro" end …

Please help, I have just installed FileMaker Server 5.5 on our Mac OS Xserver machine and am trying to "serve" some files on our LAN. We have a mixture of Macs (some OS X and some OS 9.2). The problem is that the Macs running OS 9.2 can not "see" the files being hosted by the Xserver machine while the Macs running OS X can see the files being hosted. I don't know why this is (I am a Filemaker newbie) and really need some assistance. Thank you in advance for ANY help.

I'm using FM Unlimited on an OS X Server cuz I need to display some calendar data on my website. If I want to make the calendar DB a host file on the X Server so other PCs can access it, do I need to install FM Server on the X Server? Or FM Unlimited will suffice? Thanks a lot!

OSX (10.2.3) running Filemaker Server 5.5v2. Serves up files just fine. However my backup schedules do not run. I read the install instructions before loading to the letter. Logged in as root and installed program. Restarted after install and logged in as admin user and started Server Config. Served up the files from the Server App Folder (like was said to do). I have created different B/U schedules backing up the files to different places on the harddrive plus an external volume and none run. I attempted running it by the pulldown menu Run Schedule, but that too does not initiate action. Nothing in the log other than people logging into differnt DB's. Any sugg…

from: http://www.filemaker.com/products/fm_requirements.html "Our plan is that the new FileMaker 6 line will be our last developed for Mac OS 9." Why would anyone with FMPro 5.5- and Mac OSX+ want to invest in FMPro 6? Why not just wait for the version to be written for OSX+ Or does 6 really have that much more to offer? It's still single-threaded without queueing in ScriptMaker isn't it?

I develop and support a registered database that is used by non-profit organizations in 22 different states and resently a couple of these states have encountered a problem that while working in the database suddenly all the users will lose connection with the server. After the users each shut down and restart they can get back into the database except one table gets 'lost'. Sometimes this can be fixed by stopping the FileMaker Service on the server and restarting it. This problem has happened in 3 states, each having the problem with a different table. One state has had this happen quite often and to the point that the table gets damaged and other tables lose data. …

Hi I've been trying to setup up a backup schedule in Server 5.5 on an iMac running OS X 10.2.3 that places the files on an eMac also running 10.2.3. initially this seemed to work when I mounted the eMac on the iMacs desktop but if either computer restarts the eMac is lost from the iMacs desktop and the schedule fails. Does anyone know if it's posssible to get FMP server to backup across a TCP/IP network without mounting the target disk on to the desktop, If so please share. Many thanks

Hi all, we are using fmserver with windows 2000 terminal services. So fmserver on dedicated win2k server machine (works fine) and everyone enters the data via fmpro on the terminal server. The problem I have is on this ts machine. fmpro takes sometimes 100% of the cpu (and not only when difficult things are done) server specs : raid 5 - 1024meg ram - 600mhz processor How to avoid ?? I tried everything suggested in the previous post. I am running FM Server 5.5 on a Windows XP Pro Machine and I want to back up FMP files to a Novell Server across a Novell Network. Is there anything special I need to do. I've tried to set up an account to log on to the remote machine, but I can't figure out what FM Server is actually doing when it attempts the backup. I get an error every time that the remote volume was not found. I've tried UNC names and mapped drive names and nothing works. I think that the workaround described in the knowledge base works in Windows networks, but not with Novell Networks. Any ideas?

I wonder if anyone has any more ideas on the sporadic file corruption with FMP Server 5.5v2 on OS X Server. We currently run Mac OS X 10.1.4 Server, running FMP Server 5.5v2. Today I used the Remote Administration X from FMP 6v2 under OS 10.2.3 from my PowerBook to close 25 files, and then I copied them locally to back them up. Low and behold the largest file had corrupted, and took over and hour to recover. This is really bad, and means I have to go back to OS 9 on the server until someone fixes it. Has anyone had this problem, and cured it by going to Mac OS X Server v10.2? As an Apple dealer we could upgrade, but only if it is going to help. I would…

I just installed FM Server 5.0 in a W2000 Server. I also relocated an existing Mac Running the same server serial number. Once I corrected for the duplicate licenses running (or not running), I discovered that the Remote Admin was giving that error. All other servers running OK. Replaced Remote Admin on both machines, nothing. Any ideas?

Has anyone run into this? A reboot of a server from a system bugcheck. I am using W2K server for my FM server (FM server 5.5--dedicated), W2K Pro from my side and using FM Developer with the server plug in for admin. All service packs and patches are up to date, new network card. This has just recently strated to occur. MS knowledge base does not cover the error code the W2K Server is generating. Seems to mostly occur when scolling through the files in admin. Also the Cat5 lines are running through a hub, before hitting the server. Any suggests or toughts?? Thx

Hello, I am in the process of switching to OSX with FM server 5.5 and see that it does not support Apple Events. My problem is that I do not backup to a tape drive I back up to a mounted volume and that volume is backed up (not by me). So all I do is run a script that mounts my volume and then backup everything to that volume. Does anyone know of a way to schedule an apple event in OSX or is there another piece of software that I can use to schedule a volume to be mounted? Thanks for any help. Brian

Just working with a customer who has already got all her clients in the Mac OS Address Book app - and now it looks like the same work again putting them into my FM Address Book. Anybody got a neat way of interfacing between the two? Anything better than Copy&Paste would be highly appreciated...

Lately, I've decided to create runtime solutions for os x. So, I switched to os x and created new runtime solutions. I used solutions that were running under os 9.2. At the end of the process, everything worked fine. However when I launch a solution under 9.2, a message tells me to switch for 10.1. The only way I found to launch a solution is by launching FileMaker Pro itself instead of double-clicking the solution's icon. I find that very annoying. Is there any way to overcome that problem. Does anyone know how to start OS X Server via the command line? I thought I saw a post on here a while back, I believe it was taken from the linux startup instructions, but i can't seem to find it. My goal is to run OS X and FM Server without the AQUA GUI, as it eats lots of CPU cycles and is never used.

I have a client with two locations needing to host several FileMaker data bases via the internet. He has a Mac LAN w/ a new Mac Server with FileMaker Server 5.5. The remote site also has a Mac an a DSL line. Is there a straight forward way to hook up a mac only system (Mac server, workstation and remote stations) into a Mac WAN? I already know about Terminal Server, Citrix and Timbukui, but I was hoping someone had experience with a Mac to Mac WAN that works.

Hi everyone, I wonder if a win 2000 prof. (not 2000 server) machine (2ghz - good hd - 512ram) is good enough to run fm server for 25 users. Although fm says that win pro is good for 10 users, I understand that Mr. Anatoli has a better performance with a win pro version. Am I right or better start with win2k server greetings

I have Filemaker 5.5 v1 Server running on OS X Server (10.1.5) on a PowerMac G4 800Mhz Dual Processor 512MB for a small 4 file contact inventory database. The 5 clients are using Filemaker Pro 5.5 on PowerMac G4 machines running Mac OS 9.2.2. Does anyone have problems with this configuration or any issues with running Filemaker Server 5.5 on Mac OS X (10.1.5). I checked with Apple and Filemaker and they assured me that there are people running this configuration but it has not been certified. Please let me know if anyone has a personal experience.
