On the Filemaker web site. There is a page stating you can drag and drop excel spreadsheets into a Filemaker database. Are they referring to import or is it actually a drag and drop? http://www.filemaker.com/promos/50dollar_rebate.html

I'm having trouble opening DBF formated files. I need to convert a number of tables into FM, but every time I try, I get a generic error message. I was able to open the DBF files easily before I upgraded to 5.5. I have checked my extensions folder in FMP and the DBF translator is there. The open dialog will show me the DBF files when I select that file type. But when I try to open the file(s), no luck. I have checked the FM.com support knowledgebase and only found one document that might apply. It suggested I try changing the file type to "TEXT" which I tried, but again, with no success. Anyone have any suggestions. I need to move my files out of Fo…

Hello, Having an import problem with a JPG file I work on osX with Fmpro dev 6.04 The file won't import into Filemaker, it isn't even listed in the import list (dimmed). I can open it in all other apps but not in FM. If I resave it with photoshop 7 it works OK. What's wrong with this file? Any info appreciated. http://users.pandora.be/bonte/afbeeldingen/179.%20Trollen%20va%c9ist%20(Front).jpg

Apologies if that has been discussed before: If you import a set of records with the 'update existing' option checked, and the imported set has to records with the same key field value, which one will take precedence? The latter one? Example: I am importing part number counts into the db. What if I have the same number twice in the set that is being imported (the first one being a value of 6 the second being a value of 9) Which will end up in the db?

I'm new at FileMaker...this will be elementary to most... I made a flat file database with a runtime engine for a client to enter data at two sites. Now, I'm trying to write an import script so that a third party can keep a copy of the database with all the data from both sites. When I've tested the script, and I import the exported file, everything seems fine, but if I import the exact file again, it duplicates all of the records even though I've checked "update records" and "add new records" on the field mapping screen. My match field is an ID number that is a calculation field--concatenation of serial# plus left two letters of the location. I checked "don't st…

Hi Everyone, Would someone please help me with the following information. I have no experience with FileMaker or any other database for that matter so forgive me if I don't explain this very well. I have a friend who has a program that uses FileMaker Pro 3.0 for it's database. Is it possible to export his customer records into another program? The program he's currently using is quite old and is not operating correctly and the person who wrote it can no longer be contacted. He obviously doesn't want to lose the details of 7000 odd customers. If it's possible, I'll get to how it can be done next. :-)) [color:"black"] Thanks for your help. Regards, …

Trying to make my idea work but still don't succeed in it, allthough I've posted a similar question before. - I have a FM database that will be distributed to users as an executable. - Every record has 20 fields. - The first 10 fields will be edited by me. - New records will be added by me. - The second 10 fields of every record wil be edited by the user with data that only concirns him. After I have edited records (the first 10 fields of every) or add new records (with the last 10 fields empty) to the database, I want to sent the users an update. The user must be able to import the (changed) first 10 fields of every record that is already in his ve…

OK here's a strange thing, and as usual, I will do my best to explain it. First, I am using FM 6, and I have a conditional pop-up menu. I have a "Item_Category" field that dynamically changes the "Item" field. The value list is an "Only Related Items" list. Now, the catch is that I have the "Item" field set to Auto-enter a lookup so that you can't change the "Item_Category" field and accidentally leave the "Item" field unchanged; "Item" jumps to the first item in the newly-changed value list (the value list is set to include only related items). I hope that makes sense. Okay, now here's the actual problem. I have a script that imports "Matching Field Name" rec…

Hi, I live in Palm Beach County...home of the butterfly ballot and now the National Little League Champs. I bought Filemaker Pro 6 3 days ago, and after several hours of frustration plus a useless phonecall to the company techinical support, I stumbled across this forum and I am hopeful somebody has some advice. One of my users installed a newer version of my runtime program on his Mac and then experienced the following problem. After he imported his files into the new version he found that when he attempted to export even a single record (300KB) the export feature takes ten or more minutes and when completed, the size of the file is 5.5MB even though when you open up the exported file all you see is that single record of data. He installed the program on two different Macs and is having the problem in both locations. This problem does not occur on my Mac, which burns the disks. Any Ideas?

I frequently import records from Excel files and fp5 files. I update records in found set, based on a matching field. However, if I have 50 records in my source file, and only 46 can me matched, and therefor updated, is there anyway to "display" somehow the records that WERE NOT updated? As it is now, I export the updated records to Excel, and match the data until I find the missing records. This is really inconvienent, and I am sure there is a much better way. Thank you...

I have a client that uses FM to record some events info. She wants to export that data, so I can then process the file using a PHP page and throw it into a MySQL db behind their website. I have a problem - the file that FM is producing is proving a nightmare to process. It is tab delimited text, but only seems to contain a line feed char as the record delimiter (ASCII char 13). All the PHP functions seem to want a full carriage return / line feed pair. When you view the file in any Windows text editor it is all in one big block as you might expect. Are there any other options that my user can invoke to produce the file in a different format. I am a total novice …

I need to be able to take data that looks like this: company name: my new company E-Mail Address: [email protected] Web Site: Home Phone: 555-123-9876 and drop it into a field in my FMP database and have a script that parses it into the correct field. The challenge is that not all of the data that I receive is "required". Other things that are challenging are things like company name where the name could be 1 word or 5 words. The one good thing is that all potential fields are each on their own line when I get them. Thanks for any and all help.

OS: Windows 2000 Filemaker Pro 5.5 I have a container field in my database, and if I import a jpg file, for example, it works fine, both directly or via a link to the file. However, if I attempt to import a TIF file, I cannot do it, either directly or via a link to the file. The error message presented is: <filename>.tif could not be imported. The filter could not import the selected file. Thinking that perhaps the LZW compression might be the culprit I tried it on files I knew were not compressed and got the same error. What am I (or Filemaker?) doing wrong here? I am planning to use Filemaker to organize several hundred photos to be used…

I'm trying to link/import FMP 5.5 data into Access via FMP ODBC (FileMaker Pro FMFMP50.DLL). It fails with "Invalid Field Definition '<field_name>' in definition of index or relationship". I delete the index in FMP but I continue to get the error. I deleted the field in FMP, and now I get the error on the next indexed field. But I'm not even sure if the problem really has to do with indexed fields, when I deleted this field and tryed it again, I got the error on a non-indexed field. Is it actually possible to link via ODBC to a FMP dataset?

Hi, I'm currenty unable to get some data from a FileMaker 4.1 database into a replacement Access 2000 application. I can export the file but Access won't import it. After much investigation I discovered that the export file (approx 2MB) contains some weird characters which cause Access to fall over. Undaunted I wrote some VB to strip these out only to discover VB 6 (and Access) recognise these additions to the export file as 'End Of File'. Though I could open the files in Word or Wordpad (both Access and FM are on PC's running win 98) I've tried all sorts of formats (comma separated, tab separated, merge, DBIII etc) and all sorts of characters sets to no avai…

I'm doing an export of some 36 fields from a FM (Developer 6) DB and 3 related FM DB's. I'm putting the export in a script. I've got one field that's driving me bananas - it keeps disappearing from the export list. I performed the file export, create the field list, - works fine, everythings there. I openned the script, clicked on the export statement, clicked done and told it to replace the export. I ran the script and this one field (from one of the related files) didn't show up. I ran it again and checked the export field list, and it wasn't there. So I did the file export bit, and the field wasn't there either. Many, many tries and no luck. It'll e…

Our law firm is on Macs. Unfortunately, we need to use a Windows-only time-billing program. We've decided to go with TABS. I'm writing a small database to "capture" the time at our users' laptops and desktops. Any suggestions as to handle the process where we export from each computer and combine into a main repository file? I have several scripts written to export data from my contact database (FMP 6.0v4). The exact fields being exported, or their order might change from script to script. Is there a way to "lock" those export fields and their order for just that script? Currently when I export and change the required fields add or subtract, when the export script runs, I have it pause and the right column has the fields from a previous export, so I have to start over each time. It sounds like a simple request, but I can't figure it out.

Hello, I have a question for you FMP experts regarding how FMP 5.5 Server / Client "remembers" or recalls the file path for importing and exporting data. I've been working on a legacy (fmp 2) solution that a client requested be placed on their FMP 5.5 Server and some additional functionality. (they did not want a total redesign, that I suggested) The current data flow runs like this A databases (inventory) exports some records to an FM database (temp) then runs two external scripts that import various fields from this newly exported database. These databases then export tab delimited files based on the imported data. This was originally run as a single user…

I'm using Filemaker Pro 6 with Filemaker Server 5.5 on an NT system. We have a database of books. Every book has a unique ISBN number. Hi!! I need to import 9 Excel Timesheet Files Weekly into FM to do a cleanup, validation and spit out reports on delinquent employees. I've got the meat and potatoes of the program done, but I was wondering if I had to import the files manually each week. Hi all, I'm new to the forum and hope someone has had a similar problem and can offer some advice. I have a database of about 2000 records and 500 fields, when doing maintenance on it I make a copy first, make the changes and then import the 'live' version back in. It used to take 30 minutes or so to load all the records back, but now takes more than 5 hours! The only significant change I made that could slow it down was to add about another 20 summary fields. Has anybody had a similar experience? Thanks.

I am just finishing up a small project that needed to be in filemaker, and print out high quality images. Since we produce catalogs, I naturally used TIFFs as the image format. However, when I wrote an applescript to import all of the records (necessary due to some logic needed to import the thousand or so images), I kept erring out on a group of images with a "incorrect data type" on some images. After hitting my head on a wall for a while I finally discovered that these images happened to have transparency enabled. After a re-save in photoshop, they imported fine. Lesson learned: filemaker does not like transparency

Hi All, I'm trying to export a database into a tab-separated text file which I will then run through a template that will do some html formatting on it, and I'm running into some problems. I have about 200 fields, and only about 100 of them are showing up in the Table view of Browse mode. Those same 100 fields seem to be the only ones being exported, as well, even though I specifically select all fields to be exported. Is there a field number limitation on exporting, or a file size limitation? I'd appreciate any help anyone can offer - and reducing the number of fields isn't really an option. Thanks, Brian

For the past several years, I have been archiving old paper files onto a FileMaker database. In each record, an image of the paper file is stored in a container field. Since I started, I have been inserting the .tif files via Insert > Object > Create from File and then choose the one I need. Up until last week, when the image was inserted, an icon would appear and the filename would appear underneath it. Whichever program I had set as the default for opening .tif files would open the file if the container field was double-clicked. Now, however, whenever I do exactly as I have been doing for the past several years, I get a thumbnail of the image in the container…

Every day we export data in .csv format from a Filemaker file hosted on Server 5.5 via Client 6.1. The export includes all records in the table, about 120,000 records. From time to time we get additional rows inserted into the csv file for which no record exists and that contain no data. They are correctly formatted, containing the correct number of fields, all of which are empty. And we have noticed that these only appear in locations where records have been deleted. All our records are given a serial number when they are created, and the empty rows are inserted between serial numbers where we can deduce there have been deletions. So it is almost as if, w…

Hi, Is it possible, when using the Import - Folder function to import all the contents of the folder into a single record? I have a set of files developed on a Mac that is being migrated to FM Server (on a Win2000 Server box). These files run a series of import scripts, both importing from related FM files, and importing text file dumps that are positioned on our NT Server's hard drive. I created them in FM 5, then 5.5, and am now running them in 6. When I place all the files on FM Server, I found I have to open & close each import & export script and re-specify the file location. So far so good. This works to respecify the path to the Filemaker files. But when I try to do the same thing to the text files, it fails. I've tried unchecking "save relative path" and it does…

When importing files into filemaker, you can designate a "match field" and then update the record with the imported data instead of creating a new record. I'm working on getting and putting info into Filemaker via ODBC. I can find and retrieve records just fine with ODBC (not the speediest though), but when I try to use a primary key and update a record, it simply creates a new record instead of first finding the matching record. I'd like the behavior of using the primary key as a "Match Field". Is there something I'm missing, or is it as I fear and Filemaker's ODBC implimentation is just poor in this regard. This is using OS X, and the other side is the UPS …

I'm using FMP 5.5 on Windows, and I may need to interact with a data source on a Linux box. Is Importing/Exporting the only way to go? Can I 'push' data into FMP from an outside ODBC source? Can I view ODBC data through FMP or do I need to import it? Unfortunately I don't have a lot of details at this time, so I'm mainly looking for general suggestions or options that may be available to me...

Is there any way to tell FM Pro to change the line feeds in a calc field to carriage returns? I need an automated way to do this, either via scripting or a plug-in. It has to be simple - my users have little technical expertise.

Does anyone know why the FileMaker Pro ODBC driver is unable to create DSN that points to a dataset? It just creates empty DSN, there's no option to point it to specific database Same goes for User DSN and File DSN. B

I need to find a way to export records, one at a time, saving each record with a different filename, automating the process with a script. What I have written so far stops with the dialog box waiting for the filename. I am generating filenames within a special field - I want to copy the contents of this field and paste into the dialog box (automatically) and (automatically) hit return, and continue on with the script. (The actual problem: I need to export certain records once a month to an accounting database(proprietary). The database programmers have written an "application program interface" (API) that will always scan a certain directory. When the API se…

I export FileMaker data, including text box data, to a SQL database. The data looks fine in FileMaker, but when it is imported into SQL, carriage returns are displayed with a square character. Has anyone else experienced this and do you know how to prevent it?

here's the deal, we have an excel file that has one column of store numbers, and a second column of various numbers... lets say for ease sake they have 5 stores and 10 numbers. so the excel sheet looks like this: STORE -- number a -- 3 b -- 4 c -- 1 d -- 6 e -- 2 -- 5 -- 9 -- 7 -- 10 -- 8 what they want is store A to get each number (A3, A4, A1, etc) then store B to get the same numbers, then store c, d, and e... How in the world can i do this easily? If it was really on 5 stores and 10 numbers it'd be a breaze but it's 500 stores and 1500 numbers! Can i script this somehow? the final file has to be a text database w…

When I import a comma-delimited text file which does not have the same field names as my fmp db, I must order the fields in the destination file to match the order in the source file. Is there a way to assign a name to this order and place it on the "View by" list? Once, when I imported an update to my destination file, the "last order" view had changed inexplicably, and I again had to re-order the fields, which are extensive. I would like to have an order saved by a name I would assign, so that if the "last order" does change again, I can go to the "view by" list and choose my own named order. Does the "custom import order" choice offer such an option? Tha…

I'm an ex-Windows user considering migrating from Access. In FM is there a way to copy and paste data to an excel spreadsheet, or a sheet in a graphing program as one can in access? Or does one have to export data to a file and import it/open it in excel? Many thanks.

Hi, Looking for some help-I have some large text files that have more than the Excel limited 65000 lines in them. The records use space to differentiate between the columns (9 colums in total-see below).I want to use FP to import them but I find I have to break them up, use excel to convert them to .csv and then import them. Is there anyway that I can import these files directly for onward use within FP? Attached is a sample Thanks in advance Sandy example of text.txt

I'm trying to put together a phone directory in Word using a contact database with a related phone database. Originally, I was using a flat Excel file that I could do a merge off of. With the new relational contact database I'm ending up with export files that aren't set up correctly to merge (Single records take up several rows) To get around this, I wrote a script to take the contacts names and all the related phone info and put it into a singal field/record, formatted with the proper spacing and then I export that. This works great except I have to use spaces to seperate data of different legnths. Is it possible to use/add tabs in a filemaker text field/script to get a…

I am trying to import an Excel file with a list of email addresses into a Filemaker field called "Email Addresses". I also want to "update matching records" and "add new records". However, Filemaker only allows me to define the field as a field to IMPORT or a field to MATCH...but not both. How do I do this when the only field I want to import is also the matching field? Thanks!

Hello Guys, Im producing a multiuser database, that's going to be used in a workgroup environment. I've produced an CSV export file, which gives me access to the records in FileMaker in another format. My dilemma is, I want to export the data in a particular folder, hence I will have to use a pathname. Can this be done natively in FileMaker or do I have to use a plugin? (which im desperately trying to avoid-as im working on a shoestring budget!) Thanks Jalz

We have a company database we run on Filemaker Server. I would like to create some custom layouts (previews) on my laptop (standalone) and import them back into the server database. Right now the only way I can update the layouts is to work directly on server version or copy the standalone file over the server file and lose the data. Is there any way to import layouts (previews) without disturbing the data?

I searched the posts but I it didn't seem anyone had the exact same problem as me. Here it is : I have a script that imports data from the current found count in another Filemaker database that sits on another server. The thing that happens, is that it looses the path everytime I import. So every time I want to import data, I have to go to my import scriptstep and browse to the file I want to import from. But when I look at the import script step before I "repoint" the file, the IP address is still there...(??), but it doesn't import at all and it doesn't show me any error messages... After I repoint the database I want to import from, the extension of the file shows…

I imported some records containing dates and they appear exactly 100 years older than in the original file, which is just a text file. The original data was in another FileMaker database on a PC, but I was accessing it over the network from a Mac. I exported it, manipulated in Excel, then saved as text and reimported. Later I redid it all on the PC but still had the problem. The data looks fine when imported into Excel, and the date field appears as 12/31/2001, etc. - already formatted in the text file like it was in the original FM file before exporting. What's happening?

OK, first I thought I was just crazy. But it happened again... I have a file called Invoice Parts. I make a clone, do some tweaking (adding fields, changing layouts, etc). I even delete a couple of fields. I do not change the names of any existing fields. Now, from Invoice Parts Clone, I import records, select Matching Names, but when I look through the list, there are a number of fields that should be lined up but don't. In fact, several of them. I actually highlighted one, rechose matching names, and it didn't move! Of course, I don't expect data to go into any newly created fields, or go from from any deleted fields. But the one's that aren't lining up …

I want to use MS Word but Im confused on this whole process. I actually dont know anything about this for the most part other than where to perform the comands to do it. But I have no idea what commands to use to achieve this. So if anyone responds would you mind given plenty of detail on the whole process. I really appreciate any help anyone can offer. Sorry if Im too vague, Thank you, Josh

I'm having trouble replacing an export file when I bind my solution. I path the file, set the script (export, no dialog and specify the file)and it works fine. The file is replaced with the current found set. However, as soon as I bind the solution, it no longer works. I get an error message when I try to use the button that say it "Cannot create file GenRef" in the specified location. It suggests that I "rename the file, turn off write protection or select a different location". Any ideas? Thanks

This mostly concerns a single-user, relational db that is distributed using Filemaker developer. There are 2 files in the solution that need to be exported to tab files on the user's desktop. The problem I am having is getting the files to consistently save to the desktop on NT/2000/XP systems, where the desktop path is based on the username (the windows username, not the filenamer one...). On these OSes, even if I set it up to export to my desktop and save the export order, when I move to a different PC, or even move the .fp5 files around on my computer, the script won't work. It either exports to the folder the filemaker files are in, or it saves to 1 directory …

I'd love to get clarity on some irritating issues (inconsistencies/bugs) with Filemaker's handling of imports/exports: 1) I have a script that saves an export to C:Mergemerge.mer (using specify file in the export script) - and it sometimes fails to export to that location, choosing, instead, the Filemaker Pro directory. The solution is hosted by FMS 5.5 and Win2000, and all workstations are Win2000, running FMP 6 with recent updates. It will sometimes fail on one workstation but will work just fine on another! I'm sure this has to do with the lazy way Filemaker records an export path - does anyone know exactly how it does this and how to avoid it failing? 2) …

I have an Excel spreadsheet that has 186 fields (columns). I need to make it into a FM database (i'm using 5.5v2), I have searched this forum and the manuals, but cannot find a definitive answer as to whether or not FM can automatically define fields on an import from an Excel spreadsheet based on the sheet's header row. The closest thing I've found so far, is how to import a spreadsheet and have FM create field definitions F1, F2,.... etc, but that doesn't really solve my problem, because I'd still have to go in and rename the definitions anyway. I hope this isn't a redundant topic that I'm bringing up. I did a search but couldn't find anything. Thanks for …

HELP NEEDED! Working evironment: PC-windows I'm trying to export records from FMP-4.0 and because there are Greek characters (using, Arial Greek TT Font) in fields and text boxes everything looks very wrong in the exported file! I've tried other fonts, but nothing...: I also tried something that SHOULD work. I opened the FMP-4.0 file from FMP-6.0 and it opens fine, but once again all the Greek characters are wrong! I'm desperate! What is there possibly I could do? Something anybody can think? ASCII conversion or something? (p.s. English characters look fine in all cases) See attachment picture for example. Please help!

I have a database that I am importing information in from an excel spreadsheet. When I designed the database (due to my inexperience) I put in a bunch of drop down menus. For instance, products and their UPC numbers. I am now trying to import the data but can't get it into the fields that have drop down menus. Is there a way to do this or am I going to have to put the data in by hand?

I use windows 2000 and filemaker 5.5 I would like to know if someone knows how do I export records from filemaker to a txt file (this txt file could be excel, for example) and I would like to choose the columns names. I have built a database that uses Troi File to automatically import entire folders of images and text files. I would also like to be able to automatically import video and sound files (Quicktime, .wav, .mpg, etc.). Using the standard FM Quicktime command, I can import one at a time, requiring the user to select each file, but I would like to simply have the user select a folder, then let the script handle importing all the files in the folder. All help gratefully accepted.
