FileMaker Pro v7 – v11

I am building a DB on Win XP - my computer got a virus/spyware, so I moved it to my Mac iBook also running FM7, but now can not edit the layout... Any suggestions? thanks Kim

I created a database at work and the company wants to distrobute it to other branches. Is there a way to do this without having to buy the full version of FM for each user? If so any info would be appreciated. Thanks

Spent the entire weekend moving my db over to FMPRO 7. The db is about 1.8 GB. When I go to back it up, by saving as "Database Copy", it takes like 40 minutes. Moreover, I can't see how far along it is because FMPRO has changed the scroll bar thing that used to show you the approximate percentage done to the diagonal bar thing. In FM7, is it possible to reorder the record ID? The record Id matched the Order ID field until some records were deleted. The records have been recreated but there is a group that doesn't flow in sequence. I know I can sort the records and get what I need but I would like to have them match if possible. There aren't that many records and I am willing to reorder them manually if It can be done. Phil

Our company has some very complex FMP 5.0 databases, which is slated for a FMP 7.0 upgrade in the future. One of the shortcomings we find with FMP 5.0 is that it lacks Windows authentication, so users log in with passwords that do not required IDs and they do not expire. Does FMP 7.0 address this issue? Ideally it would integrate with Windows and allow for an ID/PW configuration providing for a more secure environment. BTW, we do have tracking in place user the user name defined in preferences, but really need to ID/PW process with expiring to meet internal audit needs. Any information is greatly appreciated. I have taken over a database with a new employer. This database has 37 files with the largest file having just over 700,000 records and is still growing. With other databases I have worked with I just archived older records but this solution is different. I need to have all of these records live all of the time. My estimated growth is about 2500 records per week in the largest of the tables. It seems that when we added the last push of records from about 640k to 700k that is when things really slowed down. One of the scripts that pulls in new records from a MySQL database went from 8 hours to a 14 hour job. What is causing all of this trouble? Is this too…

Hi, I use the international phonetic alphabet font in my databases. In the past, I have used non-unicode fonts in both FM 6 and 7 with no inputting problem (could not search though). In the last year, I updated to the unicode fonts and keyboard layouts. In the storage option I have selected Unicode as the default language and in field language, I have selected the font. The problem is that I cannot type any diacritics. That is, I can type all of the other symbols, but when I want to put a symbol over or under a particular letter, I cannot. I am developing a FM application, that works in combination with DeLorme Street Atlas, where the route for the drivers is exported to Delorme and he uses a GPS to visit all his stops. DeLorme supports hyperlinks for every mappoint (custom imported data field on the map) - it would be ideal if the driver could click on that hyperlink and that would bring him back to the matching record in the database, so he can look up information about his stop that he is about to make. I am new to FileMaker and am helping our Scheduling Director with her student database that contains a record for each time a student works. Exapmple, John Smith works Monday, Wednesday, Friday from 4:00pm to 8:00pm. John Smith would have three records, and an additional one containing personal data. How can I read each record and have all of them display onto one layout. I know that Table view shows all the records, but I need to do some parsing. My company recently bought volume licenses of Pro 6 & Server 5.5 from FileMaker, since it's nearly impossible for clients to buy these versions anymore. Our product is not currently available in V7, but will be soon. Anyway - we initially bought 50 Pro licenses, and will "divide" them up as clients need them, or in other words, we're reselling them. I didn't know this at first, but they give you one key# for all 50 licenses. I suppose there is nothing preventing a client from installing Pro more times than we sold them, up to 50 times. Most clients have 3-5 workstations using FileMaker, and 1 Server. I'm not worried about a client installing Server more than…

I have a solution that works locally, but when hosted over a network it does not. It has been converted from Version 6.0 to 7.0 and the solution has not been combined into one FP7 file. More Specifically, Imports from one database to another are not working. Notes: All import scripts go to a develop layout outs with all the fields on them and then import. All import have been rematched by hand. Select Window statements have been used to make sure that the process calls the correct database. Any other other suggests would most helpful for the imports are still not working correctly.

I'm new to v7 (done a little in v4.5) and can't figure out how to create a checkbox. I've searched 'help' for 'Checkbox' and 'Check Box' but I find nothing. Am I misspelling it or is it called something else?

I am a non-programmer who has developed a largely flat DB in FMPRO 6.0 (4,000+ fields). I am considering converting to FMPRO 7.0 and wanted to know if there was a technique (once over) to move fields in the Main Table into a different table. Keep in mind that I have three years of programming in this sucker and a complete redo is out of the question. The program is admittadly designed like a spider web made by a spider on LSD. I also have to say the entire notion of switch to 7.0 feels a bit scary.

I use FMP 7 at work and i need to be able to save the file as a PDF or other file like I can on a MAC, so I can email that file so others can open and print it. How can I do this? If I go to PRINT- and click PRINT TO FILE, it will save the file to desktop but wont let me open it with any program.

Since FMP 5.0 is not supported on a Windows 2003 server, we are testing to confirm it still functions are expected. As part of our contingency plan we are testing the drag-drop process to convert our 5.0 DBs to 7.0, but are not confident this will work well since I have read that complex DBs do not convert well without a re-write. One more test we are considering is using FMP 5.0 on our client devices to access a FMP 7.0 DB on the Windows 2003 server. Is this possible?

I loaded both Filemkaer 7 Pro and Filemaker Developer and was stunned at the lousy screen font display. Previous reports that I like to display at relatively small font or magnification onscreen in order to see the maximum amount of fields and data at once are close to being un-readable. I found some posts that said the V2 update fixes this, but after going thru the substantial update the improvement is minimal if at all. The fonts are clear when at larger magnification / size, but the reports that I can still run in FM6 in the desired magnification are frustrating and close to unusable in 7. Anyone have a clue? OUr school just upgraded from filemaker 5.5 to 7.0 Pro, but when I open a 5.5 file in 7.0 it asks to convert it. After converting it, it now has a name and password. In 5.5, there is just a password screen. Now 7pro won't accept any of the working passwords from 5.5. How can i get this to work ?

I'm new to fm and will use it as a photo database. Scenario #1: import alias of photo files and keep originals on the hard drive. Upside: Use less disc space. Downside: If I rearrange the originals on the hard drive I lose them in fm (as I understand it now.) Scenario #2: Use fm as the dateabase and store the original files there. Don't keep any copy on the hard drive. So, finally the question: Is fm a safe/stable place to keep these files. Is there any downside that I'm not thinking of? In the near future I'll be in the range of 100-200 Gb of files. I'm thinking of setting up fm on a 200Gb external drive.

Each time I try, I get an error message that says I need to include a suffix such as .zip or .sit. The file in question right now is a 120 KB filemaker 7 file. I need to create a screen to store MS Word documents by ID. What would be the best way to do that in terms of the table fields? Should I save those documents as binary files? Is there a way to store the paths to the files instead? Any comments or responses will be appreciated. Onnuri

I was using omnigraffle to illustrate the idea of a database I am planning to build. Omnigraffle has a style brush which copies styles by alt-clicking with the left mouse button and paste the style by left mouse clicking on the new object in the layout. was wondering if the same kind of funtionality exists in Filemaker pro 7 where by you need to select the format painter only once and copy and paste styles using click or alt-click ing on the objects???

Hi, Does anyone know of a shortcut key combo to open the "Define Database" dialog to a specific dialog? In other words, control+shift+D will open the "Define Database" dialog display showing the last tab that was selected when the dialog was last used. I've just installed filemaker pro 6, pro 7 (multi-user licence version with at least 2 seats left), developer 7 and server 7 admin tool on a new laptop (Sony Vaio PCG-K315Z) running Windows XP Home (SP2) and a load of free software. I just purchased Filemaker 7 and I am completely new to the environment. I am poking around in the program to get a feel for it. Question: In the inventory template that comes with the program there is a feature in the layout I can't figure out. There is a field to enter item for the item field. Above it in the layout the item text is displayed after you input it. If you look at the object in layout mode it shows <<Item>>. If I right click on this it does not give me the "specify field" option. I know it is linked to the item field. IF I delete the item field I get <<field is missing>> in layout mode. btw, I'm on Tiger, not Panther... Does anyone have experience with gigantamongous databases? I have a fairly beefy machine (PowerMac G5 w/ 4 GB ram, dual-2Ghz, SATA drives) and have had significant problems importing and working with ultra-large files. (My import is more than 10 Gb w/ more than 80 million records.) The files sometimes won't import at all, and even when they do if I try to index on a field it crashes the file and makes it unrecoverable. I've called FM, but apparently I'm in uncharted territory here, and they are not able to help despite their best efforts....

Newbie question I suppose, have tried searching but no joy... I'm using FMP7 to implement a fairly large database. At the moment, the form for entering information is 11 pages long when printed. In Layout view, the mouse wheel scrolls up and down the page (using FMP7 on Windows 2000). However, in Browse view the mouse wheel scrolls through records rather than up and down through the current record. Is there any way to change this - at the moment it is extremely easy to scroll to a different record and not realise it, thus entering information in the wrong place!

How do I insert a ms word form letter that I have on my hard drive to a filemaker database layout

I have a database for creating internal invoices, whenever someone creates a new invoice the invoice number goes up by 1. However I have noticed that sometimes a number is skipped, ie; the invoice number goes up by 2. This will normally occur when 2 or more users are logged into the database. Has anyone noticed this? Does anyone know of a fix?

I have a customer who accidently deleted all the records in a critical table. Naturally, they have no backups. They have sent me their file, and I see that the file is still as large as it would be if the records were still there. I know that in other database applications, data records aren't removed from the file until a later time. I also know that in older versions of Filemaker, it was sometimes possible to read information in the data files directly. However, when I look at the new files, I only see gibberish. Does anyone have any experience hacking out the data from a damaged FM file? Is it possible to do? If possible, is it a major hassle? Thanks, David

Is it possible to have certain words contained within a text field "link" or go to a different record in the file when clicked on? So rather than having a button go to a record, somehow make selected words in a text field do it. Basically make the functionality like that of a web browser in a way. Hello, I encouter some problems with SendEvent. For instance, if I use SendEvent(aevt;odoc;"winword.exe sometext.doc"), winword.exe will be launched in the FM current directory. The path of the current dir seems to be done by the last "file operation" : Insert File, Inset Object, etc. Is there a solution to get or set the FM current directory ? My boss asked me if this was possible on filemaker. I responded by saying I don't know, I'll have to do some research. Now I'm posing the question here. Im trying to preform a search on a calculation field whose definition is as follows: Indicator = GetAsNumber ( Feedback_Survey::UnusableRecordCount ) the result of this calculation yields a 1 or a 0. I want to perform a find to separate values of 1 and 0. My find criteria is simply >0 however this yields no results. Ive tried every other way to perform finds on this field however i continue to get the no matching records dialog box. any ideas?

We have a problem. When someone creates a record in our FileMaker, they are beginning to show up correctly, however are being stamped with the wrong record user ID. Most of them are showing the user ID as "Information Systems," and that is not what it should be. Can someone help me out ASAP!

In trying to convert my FMPRO 6.0 database over to FMPRO 7.0, many of my scripts became corrupted and will not work. Hi everyone, Does FM Pro 7 allow us to lock the file at a specified time? For example: there are 2 users (A and : who have access to FM Pro 7 files that are stored in a server. User A enters some data and at the same time user B wants to enter some data to the same file too. What should I do to avoid conflict between user A and B? Hello- This might not be to difficult, but I've been struggling for a while now. I have a db hosted in Mac OSX shared over a LAN with several WinPCs as clients. I use FMP7. The clients in the WinPCs are not able to "see" many images in the Container Fields. Instead, there a message that reads "QuickTime and a TIFF (uncompressed) descompressor are needed to see this picture" or "QuickTime and TIFF (LZW) decompressor are needed to see this picture". Now, I CAN see these images in the Mac, I figured the PC had something missing, so I installed QuickTime onto the PCs, but I still have the problem. Well, that's about it! My original file works fine. When I make a backup on a CD (Using Toast Platinum) the file becomes "unmodifiable," and I cannot change the privileges or, for that matter, use it at all. I.e., no new entries, etc.

I need to know how to generate a client number based on the record number. Easy enough. Problem is that they want some special functionality that is beyond me: Let's say we have records 1,2,3,4. With client numbers 101,102,103,104 respectively. We delete record 2(thus deleting client number 102), and rather than assigning record 105 to the next one that is created, they want it to assign client number 102 since that number is no longer in use. I've got this problem, with a complicated database I sometimes need long table names or field names. Most lists for these are resizable, but filemaker doesn't seem to allow me to resize other views (the define fields pane is a great example). Am I stuck with these skimpy views? In FileMakerPro7 I clicked on the Help Menu to look for something. A message said the English Help Files were not installed. It directed me to use the installer to install the English Language pack. Because I want to use it to keep a list of the people on my paper route, with information about them, and also have a calendar integrate with the database ie. start dates and stop dates of service for a specific customer. My user is running on Windows XP, and is complaining that he can easily lose the cursor when he is entering data. The cursor is small and it blinks very slowly. I suggested that he change that in the Control Panel but he claims it had no effect and since I am working on a Mac I cannot verify that. Is this a configurable option?

I am wondering if I can force the user to close a window only with a button I put in my layout. So the user can't use the icon in the corner of the window or the keyboard equivalent. Or is there a way to make sure that a certain event happens before the window closes. Say I have a popup window where data is entered. Before the window closes I need to write that event and the content of what was enter into a log record. I can make this happen by using a done button the writes to the log then closes the window. But if the user closes the window in some other fashion my write script won't execute first. Any thoughts? TIA

Can I simply place the Filemaker file on our File Server and have the two users open the file directly from their shared folder on the server? I've noticed that files that are converted from v6 to v7 convert with a syntax like this: file:FileName The help file shows this to be the proper syntax: file:FileName.fp7 Both ways seem to work but I would think that it would be better to explicitly identify the file name including the extension. On the other hand, maybe this is a way of keeping solutions non-version specific. Any thoughts?

Electric shop The three shop tables have the same amount of fields, the same field name, and all calculations are the same. The only difference is that they are named differently. I am converting an Excel spreadsheet to FM Pro 7. There are about 21000 records but lots of duplicates. There are only two fields, Job ID, and Job Description. I need to eliminate all of the duplicate Job ID's but can't figure out how to do it. I have done a find for duplicates under Job ID, but it finds all of the duplicates, and if I delete found, it deletes all of the records. I need it to keep one record and delete the dups. Can someone offer any suggests on how to do this, other than manually. TIA Elliot

I'm currently on FM Pro 6 (full version) on Mac OS X and I'd like to upgrade to v7. I can either upgrade for $150 or buy the academic version for $150. But then I checked on eBay and saw some auctions where I can buy FM Pro 7 for $50 or less. They *say* that they guarantee authentic, unlicensed, never used, full version software. FMS / FMP 7.0v3 Problem...After a user has been using the solution for some period of time they have been noticing a slowdown, specifically in the drop down lists. I understand that since most processing is done on the Server there is a slight lag time compared to FM6 (at least in the case of the dropdown lists). At first the dropdowns are relativly quick. I didn't believe it either! I made a db solution with several tables fields and all the standard stuff. One of the users recently complained that he had typed information into a standard text field, when he returned to the field later, the text was gone. "It just ate it" he said. lmao....sure it did! Well, I had to eat my own words, we run a spy program which takes screen shots every 15 seconds. I looked and sure enough he entered what he was suppose to, he left the record and created a new one and entered more information then closed the db went surfing on the web for about 45 minutes and when he returned, the text he entered in the text field was gone on one …

I am trying to keep track of peoples time. I have built the necessary 'case' so the calculated time rounds to the nearest quarter hour, but if you try and go from pm to am the calculation gets wacky. I have experimented with the MOD function as well as converting to numbers and then back to time. Anybody have any ideas? Thanks.

I have a custom dialog with an input field and two buttons. The first button, (which I have named to New) is button1, where OK used to be (so it returns 1 when you do Get(LastMessageChoice). The second button, called Return was where Cancel used to be (returns 2 on Get(LastMessageChoice). When I enter something into the input field, and click "New", the text enters into the my "Doctor field" fine and my script continues, however if you click Return, the text in the input field isn't entered into my Doctor field. Is this supposed to happen? I'm thinking FM7 thinks clicking Return is like clicking cancel so it won't enter the text in. If this is the right procedure, i…

I have tried this function on several occations and each time i use it i get the same results. the problem: I like using custom dialog boxes to obtain find criteria from my users. i also like to display dialog boxes to help the user know whats going on. thus when a found count returns empty or 0 i want to display a message saying there are no matching records and to try the search again. ive tried using if get(foundcount) = 0 and get(foundcount)>1 (in this case i was looking for an exisiting occurance of a unique value) each time this function does not trigger the if statement and the script continues on. any ideas?

I'd used recently FM7 and found the text appeared/displayed in a little bit of blurry. I tried different color/font/size and make it more readable, but still see blurry on the edge of the text. Is there any way to make it clear and sharp in FM7 ?

Here is my problem: Table 1 is SYSTEM. Table 2 is COMPONENT. Table 3 is BANDWIDTH. A SYSTEM can have zero or many COMPONENTS. A COMPONENT may have zero or many BANDWIDTHs. I want to export all data from all tables, to a single flat file. If I export with my "focus" on BANDWIDTH, I only get COMPONENTS that have a BANDWIDTH, and only SYSTEMS that have those COMPONENTS. So, to export the whole enchilada as a single flat file, I need to be on the SYSTEM table, to export all local and linked data. The problem is that, in the export file, SYSTEM data is only in the first row of the export set. Each succeeding row contains data from COMPONENT, or both…

Hi all, I wondered if there is a way to "click" a button in the open database window by hitting the Return key (or Enter key) on the keyboard. This would be extremely helpful to be able to do. I know it sounds small, but it would be SO helpful to not have to use the mouse to click this button every time (dozens of times a day).

In a networked environment, is there any way to determine whether a user logs or times out of the system? I want to prevent users from accidentally logging out FileMaker by closing the last window of the database. I figured I'd write a shutdown script that pops up a little "Are you sure you want to log out?" dialogue if the user closes the last window. However, if the server kicks him/her off after being idle for X minutes, I want the system to skip the warning step. Any thoughts? Thanks! -Rob

As a reasonable FMP 5 user am looking at the features of FMP 7. Have trial version and see lots of new functions. I can find explanations of one or two at a time, this site for instance, but after searching the net for a couple of days (this includes the obvious, Filmaker site3 and forums), have not turned up anything that explains all the functions. I'm getting into V7 gradually. I was looking at the new Transaction Processing today (Open/Revert/Commit Record/Requests). The Open Record/Request does not allow for a Name or Id. Does this mean that we can have only 1 Transaction active at any time? Or, can we use Nested Transactions, and assume that the Revert/Commit operate on a Last In First Out method?

Hi all, I'm trying to run a script on a remotely hosted file (FMServer 7) by using the FileMaker's ActiveX functionality. I'm launching this from within a VBScript (Script.vbs). I'm open to using either native FileMaker authentication or external authentication. I can get it to run locally but it can't find the file when its hosted. I've seen the slow response in FM7 layout mode mentioned a few times, but no one seems to have confirmed if this is only happening in the trial version or in the final purchased copies as well. I just created a new file and tried to do some stuff in layout mode. Not only is the response when trying to move objects around the layout extremely slow, in some cases the objects would not move at all, not matter what I did. My monitor is only 1024 x 768 so I don't think that this is a high resolution issue as has been mentioned on some other forums. Does anyone have an idea what's going on? I am trying to create my first database. I want to input a sale in each record. I want another table to tally up the money earn and display each month's earnings. Anyone know how to keep adding up numbers until a new month as entered, then restart the count?

Please help - I am fairly new to filemaker 7 - so need a layman's explanation please. I have a database with 2000 clients in and several tables of information on each of these clients. Somehow, on one of these tables I have over 400 duplicates. How do I delete the duplicates without deleting the original info on my clients in the other tables???

I'm new to Filemaker Pro 7 but have been using FMP since version 4. I'm confident I've understood the basic paradigm changes introduced by FMP 7. When defining tables, WHY is there no "Duplicate" button? It seems like a glaring oversight to me that there's no way to simply clone tables within a file. Am I supposed to re-enter a series of fields over and over again if I want several similar-but-different tables? Suppose I have a group of logging/administrative fields I want in every table, such as DateModified, ModifiedBy, etc. etc. I have to go into every table and add those by hand?!! I have a form in which users must enter data into a series of fields. I want to make sure that users have to enter information into all relevant fields. It should work as follows; If a user enters data into "field 2" they must also complete "field 1". At the moment many users are not doing this. Can anyone suggest a solution?

Well, I would say that I am a fairly proficient developer in filemaker 6. I'm not and expert but I know my way around, and I have created some pretty complex solutions. Filemaker 7 is baffling me though. Thing as simple as relationships have me scratching my head. Maybe I'm just too use to 6, and I'm not seeing simple things. Anyway, my question is; can anyone recomend a book that would be good for a user at my level. I don't need a "beginners guide" or anything like that. I need a book that is targeted for someone that knows 6 pretty well and would like to learn 7. If anyone has any recomendations that would be great.

Just started tinkering with FM7 yesterday. I've gotten a pretty good start for not really knowing what I'm doing! But now I'm stumped on something specific, so if anyone could point me to a good tutorial or a thread that I've missed in my search, that'd be great. Hello, I am trying to query through a table record by record to add up a certain field of the records that qualify under the if statement: If ( qualification1 and qualification2 and qualification3; Sum ( add up certain field of all the records that made it through the if statement ) ; 0 ) However, the if statement goes through the first record only and, if it qualified, adds up all of the table's entries, regardless of whether they qualified individually. Is there a foreach statement or something similar I can use? Thanks.

There's nothing I hate worse than someone hanging up the phone before even taking the call which I continually seem to get when I call Filemaker at (800) 325-2747 and pick option 1. I also really hate to get customer service representatives that are obviously poorly trained and cannot actually provide any service.
