I am trying to help someone upgrade their data that was stored on an old Mac PowerPC 6300 running OS9. She was using a very old version of FileMaker, FileMaker 4. The manual is dated 1988. The PowerPC began to die and she was given a Dell with a Pentium 4 and is running Windows XP. FileMaker Pro 7 has been installed on the PC, however, we are unable to convert the data. I attempted to convert the data on an iMac using FileMaker Pro 5 and am also unable to do so. Is there any way to retrieve this data and update it into a newer version of FileMaker? Please help. My friend is quite desperate.

Hello, I ran a search on my problem and saw a few posts suggesting all JPEG is not created equal. I did not see an answer to the question RE:"JPEG ERROR # 53 If the problem is JPEG format, is there a better picture format (GIFF, PCX )etc. to use for filemaker?? I scanned a paper form used in my business and placed the scanned image on a BLANK layout with fields entered in the appropriate lacations. It looked pretty good (an exact match). Browse mode and layout mode were fine. Preview mode shows an error (jpeg error #53) The original jpeg image was 1.4 meg. I have since reduced it to .4 meg. Yet the problem still persists. I am a PHP/MySQL programmer. My boss has insisted that I use FM7 to create a webbased application. From my research on the web, I found that there is CDML tags that can be used with Web Companion in FM6. This functionality appears to be removed from FM7. Is this true? Difficulties I am having: - How do I have a password field? I have a script that prints, and i have it set to restore settings to a certian printer twice in the script because it randomly prints between 2 printers like it has its own mind. but it still does, it seems to print on 2 diffrent printers back and fourth, if I run the print script 1 time it will print on the wrong printer, I run it agian without changing anything and it prints to the right printer?? Not sure if this should post here or the IWP forum. Situation: databases are running under FileMakewr Pro 7.0v2 hosted on a G4 Mac running OSX server 10.2.8; clients use same FMP7 version on various Macs running 10.3.4 Have a set of databases (separate files) running on FMP7. One, our job database, references several other files, such as invoices, timesheets, etc and shows the relevant data in portals on separate layouts. This all worked fine under FMP6 and is fine under FMP7 across our internal network. Hello all! I have plan to rewrite my big 50 solution travel agency backoffice solution from FM5.0 to FM7 but after checking with Productive Computing and got the message that Filemaker dont let them have information so they can convert their Change Printer Plugin to work with FM7 I dont know if I should "upgrade". Normally I have all printers stored in one solution and let Change Printer use these information changing printer for each purpose. If a client buy a new printer, or have to replace of other reason, its easier changing the printer in one place instead of in every script. - How did you do? Do you use some other plugn-in? After installing FM Pro 7 on a Windows PC, I can't seem to get it to turn on the preference to show recently opened files -- whenever I try to check the box, I get the error "This command cannot be used by this installation of Filemaker" I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but that doesn't fix the problem. Has anyone else encountered this and found a workaround?

Is it now possible with FMP7 (dev) to allow a script's export settings to be saved without having to edit the script? (example, using it with a runtime) I have a solution that has export files that sometimes need what fields it exports to be adjusted. I'd like to be able to do this with a script. Set "LEARN" mode on. Perform the export, have it save the settings and turn "LEARN" mode off and work the new way forever more. Is this now possible? Thanks

I've created a little join table.. which tracks Committee Enrollments I have two other tables People and Committees Can an FP7 value list be called from the join table, but be auto-generated from the serial # fields from the tables I am joining. I thought this shoudln't be a problem.. but I tried it, and when I create a new record on the join table, the field which should show me the value list being generated from the other table generates no values. Ok, first off I am a noob to filemaker and using version 7 on a mac. I have a table with a bunch of patient info including patient ID which is unique. I have another table with the names and addresses of insurance companies which also has a unique ID. I want to be able to select an insurance company from that table and insert that information (without retyping) into the patient table where there is info for the insurance portion. Hi, I am new to this forum and find it to be a great resource. My FileMaker skills are a little rusty. I would like to create a web based survey in FMP with custom layouts. A few years back I did this by using FMP 4 and Claris Home Page. I am using a Mac server and laptop with OSX 10.2. I have access to FileMaker 5, 6 and 7. Of course I have a tight timeframe to complete this task. As far as I know Claris Home Page has not been updated. I have access to DreamWeaver but it looks like I need a PC server to run it. Lets say Im trying to perform a find with a script, and I dont want it to find a field containing a pattern lets say i have a record with a full vin number but I want to search by the last 6 numbers of the vin, it wont let me, but if I search for the first 6 it does, any way for it to match up anything containing lets say Jft434 in the vin field??

I am new to this whole FMP world and the Mac world, so this may be an obvious question. My office recently upgraded all our computers to run on OS X, with a new OS X Server. We use FMP 6.0 for all of our business activities. We have eight computers hooked up to the server and access filemaker files through hosts. But every once in a while everyone will get kicked off the server and the message says something like "communication was lost with the host" then we have to re-open all files. Sometimes one of the files is corrupt and we have to Recover the lost file. Once this is done, we run like normal. But these crashes are starting to happen multiple times throughout…

Hello: Does anyone have any samples or ideas of how to create a document management system in filemaker for iso controlled documents. Something which would intergrate with Outlook for an approval process is required. The users want a friendly interface to search the documents (which are in word/excel formats). I have a filemaker database made up which puts the files in containers and is nice to search in but the approval process isnt there. Any ideas? Thanks Mike

In V6 I have a Pop-up with values from another file with the "2nd field" displayed and sorted by the 2nd field. During data entry, the user would enter the field, the pop-up would display and the user could enter the first few characters of the 2nd field and the value in the 1st field would be inserted into that field. In V7, when the user enters the 1st few characters of the 2nd field, the pop-up jumps to to a match based on the 1st field, not the 2nd field. An example would be a Product ID (1st field, and Product Name (2nd field). How can I get V7 to find Product ID based on pop-up showing Product Id and Product Name?

Here is something to avoid at all cost. When you create a table it creates a default relationship. If you delete a tables default relationship you will never be able to get to your data or use the table again. The warning that the program gives you when you delete a relationship only states this action will "break all items that use these tables...but will not delete the underlying tables or their data". DON'T believe it for a second. You will never be able to access your data or use the table again.

Hi, I am new to this forum. I have a cross platform database done in FMP 6. It runs on OSX and Windows XP. I have created a field that is the result of adding the text from several fields. I set it up using the "set field" script. The resulting text field is over two pages long. I want to be able to select and copy "x" amount of characters into a different online database progam. Having some difficulty with filtered value lists. I have a table holding "State" names, abbreviations, and countries (per record). I'm using this table as a value list feeder for other tables with those geographic designations. It was no problem setting up the first instance, in which someone first selects the country, and then the state abbreviation is filtered according to the country, so you get a list of state abbreviations only for the country already selected. I need to have several instances of this in my solution. Do I have to repeat the State table occurrence (and its corresponding sister table occurrence for the filtering relationship) to attach to …

I am trying to create a trailing grand summary that reflects the number of summaries within a report. I have records that relate to a household database. The subsummary shows the number of records that relates to that household. However, I need to show how many households are summarized at the end of the report. I have tried to do this a number of ways with no success and suspect that it is easier than I am making it out to be. Any help would be SOOO greatly appreciated.

I am making a multifile solution. For reasons I can't figure out, the Arrow-to-hand over a button feature on FM7 does not display even though this is checked on the appropriate menu. In most of the files this feature works fine but on a select few it does not. All files are relatively new and no settings have been changed. Any suggestion on where the problem might be? I have a database posted on the internet for my customers to use, and some users are experiencing "unknown error 972" when trying to access the database, which means invalid password. Is there a way to simply copy the full contents of a record to another table or file? What I want to achieve is, when a user clicks the delete button, the record is copied into a another table or file for me to review and restore records if necessary. I have been able to achieve it by setting up a related table using lookups etc, however I thought there might be a more elegant option.

I'm new to FM. First time using slide command. I have been able to get everything to slide into position the way I want except the layout won't decrease in size, therefore, the smaller records have a large amount of space at the end. I have a background color selected, don't know if this has any effect. I also added a bold line (which slides) at the end of the layout to show the separation of records. How do I fix this problem. Hi, Does anybody work with ArcView and Filemaker as data source? I will be part of a team in a project to develop a "Geodatabase", they currently use the ArcView 8.3 but not linked with any database (they have none at this moment). So I will be the "database expert" I have no problem with the databases itselfs, are quite simple to develop. My first aproach to the ArcView showed to me that is "too" related with our dear MS Access. after an exhausting morning on the phone w/ filemaker support, i have two different answers to this question: is the 5-user limit per database or per server? one guy told me that only 5 users (including the host) can be connected to the server at anytime. an hour later, a woman told me that i could have 5 users in each database. which is correct? thanks for your help.

With previous versions of FM I put different functions into different files but with tables available within a single file, I am thinking about incorporating these functions into a single FM 7 file but in different tables, eg: phone book, check book, notebook etc. These functions would not be related to each other but since they are never going to max out the storage available, I figure, why make up several files when I can just design a single file with several tables. Using tables in this fashion makes field management a bit easier. For a networked solution, is there going to be a problem using multiple tables in a single file that are not related to each other.? …

Need some guidance here. We are taking orders over the internet and storing the data in a MS SQL Server database server. We need to get the data into our FileMaker database. The SQL Server is a remote server connected via a VPN. What is the best way to do this? I have tried ODBC with no luck over the VPN. Should we put the data into a local FileMaker database on the web server and then transfer it over? How about exporting to plain text from sql and then importing that file into file maker? I constructed a simple form for individuals to fill out over the web. I can tab through the fields in the right order, but when the form is published on the web, hitting the tab button does not follow the correct order. For example, after the 5th field, then the next tab is the 13th field. I have looked in the layout under "tab order" and everything seems fine. What have I done wrong? How can I fix it?

I have two tables (Customer Info and Invoice) related by customer number. I would like to make a button, etc. on a layout displaying Customer Info that when clicked will go to a layout for Invoices and CREATE a new record in the Invoices table. I have tried using "Go to Related Record", but it doesn't work unless a record has already been created in the Invoice database. Right now, I have to switch to the Invoice layout, type in the customer number to make this a related record and proceed. Is there a way to automate this? It would remove the error of entering the wrong cust number. Any ideas would be great. Thank you!

Is there a way to determine whether fields in a record have been changed other than leaving the record? I've looked through all the "get" functions and don't see one that will give me this information. This information has to exist as the program checks to see if there are changes in the record so that you can commit them when you leave the record. How do I access this as a user?

In FM5 I entered reports by scanning them onto a hard drive and saving the address in a FM7 containor field. This saves FM file space but the hard drive files are huge. I figure I can reduce the size of files by using an OCR solution to enter the document as text into a FM text file. Any suggestions for a good OCR that is easy to use with FM7? Thanks.

Hi All, I have just moved up to version 7 and am having a problem with graphics that are set to no fill and no stroke to be used as invisible buttons. I like to make my buttons in photoshop then use a basic graphic, like a circle, drawn in Filemaker with the fill and stroke set to transparent to be the actual button that triggers the script. However I've noticed in version 7 that the graphics end up with a stroke or a fill after clicking on them. In version 5.5 this didn't happen and I'm at a loss as to how to fix it. Is this bug in 7 or is there a work around? Thanks, Mark

Don't be surprised if you see bloodstains, broken (monitor) glass and tears on this post. Some time back and elsewhere, I asked if anyone knew how and why my customer's (and my) Helvetica just up and went. Nobody knew. We've been slowly converting to Arial and now I find there is a bug in converting Arial from V6 to V7! We still have dozens of layouts with ex-Helvetica on them. If you've struck anything similar, you'll know that this shows as a blank font box in layout mode. The question. Has anyone out there converted a layout with a non-font to V7? If so, what happened? (I can check on Developer's behaviour but not vanilla V7.)

Is there a way to get a sum of all the records in a database with a specific value in a specific field without having to go to find mode. For example, I am creating a stats page for the database I am working on. On this stats page I want to know the total number of records that have the color field set to red and how many records have it set to blue. Using [color:"green"] TextStyleAdd(someField; Bold) works just fine to make the text in someField bold... When I try to make it dynamic and have a field named itemStyle where the user chooses from a list, Bold, Italic, etc. then use the syntax: [color:"green"] TextStyleAdd(someField; itemStyle) then it does not work. What am I missing? "Normally" we can pass the value of a field as a parameter. I checked to be sure that the result is text. I also tried using GetField("itemStyle") within the function, but no go.

Can anybody help me with a simple create related record script? I Want to auto-create a new record in a "History File" that is related to the "Receipt File". Okay, here is the issue: I have a solution that consists of many tables. I use a primary table to display the related tables data in about 5 portals on one layout. The affect I am trying to achieve is the ability to show a path that someone may take when selecting something in each of the portals. Hello all, I am implementing a button script that will show a set of records that match being marked as "Supervisor". I can get the script to work, however, when there are no records that are marked "Supervisor", a dialog pops up saying that No records match this request. This is all well and good, if you want to show that. However, I was wondering if there was something I could edit in my find script that would disable that dialog from displaying on the chance that there do exist zero records marked Supervisor?

i am interested in locking users out of a filemaker database located on a filemaker 5.5 server while the database administrator runs maintenance. i would like to keep the file up on the server but prevent all users except for the administrator from accessing it. in addition, i would like to script this capability into my database so that the database administrator can perform the maintenance without having to do anything too complicated (like, go to the server, close the folder of files, open them locally, turn on single user on the main file, do the maintenance, switch the file back to multi user and open the folder of files back through the server admin window)

I'm having a problem..... I'm running a solution that has 15-20 databases linked together through scripts, relationship,etc....While I'm developing I keep 3 or 4 copies of the databases store in the computer in order to have a way to come back if I obtain an undesired result from a change.... my problem is that FM tries to be "helpfull" by remembering location of a database and when I change something it goes to them automatically.......so I work for hours in the solution, and when I upload the files to the fm server, the changes do not work correctly because the changes were not made where they should have...... maybe this example might help explain my problem: In m…

Hi, I created a graphics database using FileMaker Pro 6. I used the "insert picture" command for the designated image field (container). The database works great from my computer (i.e., all graphics display nicely) but when I set up preferences for web companion and run it on my browser IE 6.0 not all the graphics display in the designated image field. I have a database with a number of fields. Each record is a different customer. Each customer is classified into one of six groups. Additionally, two classes they attended are listed for each customer (each in own field, from value list). How would I go about bringing up a new layout or a new database with statistics on how many people took Class X, or even how many people from group Y took class X. It sounds like it should be easy but I am not very familiar with relationships, and I get the impression that those are where this is heading. Thanks

Hello, I'm a newbie and I'm still learning the functions of Filemaker. What I'm trying to find out now is how to trigger an event (like running a script) after entering data to a specific field? But I've read from other posts in the forum that says triggering a script on field exit is only possible using a plug-in. I tried the example-plugins from www.filemakerpros.com but I think it only works for Filemaker 7 and I have Filemaker 6. So is there a free plug-in about triggering an event on field exit that works for Filemaker 6?

I am creating a database where I can take payments as a lump sum or as a down payment and several monthly payments. I need to be able to choose multiple payment types for each record. So, you could choose a bank account (check) for your down payment and a credit card for the monthlies, or one credit card for the down payment and another for the monthlies... or any other combination of payments. Hello, I am working on a DB for card collectors. I have a script that will do a report layout for all cards the person owns or has put in at least a 1 for quantity by a perticular company. The search will look for >0 in QTY and company. I do have this setup with a self-join relationship to match year, so it does find the right year. I have the user select the company and year. find mode has worked beautifully for me until this wrench in the cogs came up... how would you search a specific RANGE of things...for example, if you are identifying records by number and you want numbers 01-50 only. I know there is a script function to do that, but that's also pre-set, so it wouldn't be as flexible as i'd like. any thoughts as to what I can do?

Does anyone have any experience on working with external functions for remote administration within a script? I'm currently working on a script that will close a relational database for a specific group of users, while allowing administrators to remain logged in. I want to be able to script the external functions for Remote Administration to send users messages that the files are closing within a specific period of time, and the files to actually close. ONe of the minor annoyances (for me) from earlier FP versions was the inability to freeze the first column of a layout (wo all the subsequent columns scroll horizontally but the first column stays fixed for users reference). Does anyone know if FP7 allows for this? Thanks, Mark

In pre 7 version, the solution in our medical office was protected with a password to open the files on each client in every exam room in the morning. After a few minutes the Energy Saver would blank the screen. Coming into the room the provider would enter one password for any client to unlock the screen and a provider specifie passname/password into the initial database layout to start using the solution. In FM7 I am wondering if it would be better to start at an OS X login screen, providers type in their provider specific passname/password kept in an Apple Open Directory. Is it possible to set a FM Pro ver 7 file to have no account name? For automation purposes, I need to skip the open file notification box that says to click on the account name and enter password. I have two databases: departments and people. Each department has a unique number. Each person has a the number of his/her department. The department number is the basis of the relationship between tables. I want to send an email to each department head with the information about the department and the list of people in that department. The people in each department are displayed in the department layout in a portal. Inserting the department information in the message portion of the email is no problem. I plan to have a container field in a database which will store images. The user uploads the image, and the actual image is stored in the field. Not just a reference. Is it possible (with plugins or native filemaker functions) to have another field, that automatically resizes the image to say, 150px wide - and keeps a copy of it in there? I'm asking as I want to be able to get at these images from the web using CDML, but obviously I don't want a 2MB jpeg to be downloaded by the client every time they visit a particular page. Ummm.. last post got moved or deleted I think.. Anyway, here's the problem. I had a relational DB set up in FMP6 so that a Notes Database would display the Date and Tiltle of the Related record in a portal in my Main DB. Now, I had a button and script set up so that I could click on the button in the portal and it would open the record in my relational DB. The problem is, I can't edit anything in the related record once I get there. I get "This record is already being edited.. blah blah" I assume that if it is being edited in the portal, it won't let you in the record, but it wasn't this way in FMP6 any way around this? Thanks! I wrote a navigation script so I could do away with FileMaker's book navigation. One step in the script seems to be slowing it down. This step sets a global field with the current record number using the Get(RecordNumber) function. Sometimes the pause can be over 20 seconds and at those times I get a message that a query is being performed. This is in a database that only has 12 records in it. The record that seems to have the most problems has about 60,000 records in it but I can't see why that would make any difference since the layout I'm in doesn't use any information from that related table. Any ideas to work around this?

Hi, Just wondering if there is a sample file out there, that I can pick apart. Im trying to recreate the "continue" button from the status bar on one of my layouts (which might also be in preview mode). I know I can Resume a script by attaching the resume command to a button, but can I program the button to appear (using a portal trick or something else) when a layout is paused, thus making my interface look alot more elegant? I hope someone can help, I really dont like the look of the FM Status bar I have FMP 7 and am using it both on Windows as well as OSX, any help would be appreciated. Cheers Jalz

If you use the insert file script option to actually store the file within FMP in a container field, how do you either open the stored file or copy it out of filemaker? I don't want to store the reference path. I wish to store an actual Word doc. And then I want to either launch the word doc from within filemaker, or be able to copy to the desktop to open it. I have created a perfectly working image library database(each record has an image file in a container field and some other text fields). I am trying to make this available on the web using instant web publishing to create the pages. I have a button in my database that allows users to download the image to their own computers. This button is scripted using the export field contents function supplied. This function is not web compatible so the button is disabled when i make the web pages. This function is essential to the system I am creating, can anyone suggest another way of scripting it?

I have been using a FM6 DB as a lab notebook for the past 3 years. I recently upgraded to FM7 and migrated my old files over to FM7. My layout has a date field that is set to auto-enter the current date upon creation of a new record. When I created the FM6 DB, I had my Control Panel:International:Date settings set to DD.MM.YYYY and the field format was set to be the same, but now I have both these settings set to standard US usage. So now in FM, I have the date field set to be formatted MM/DD/YYYY and I have the Use System Formats checked. A value list using values from a field, displaying values from a second field. You can type the first few letters of an item to scroll straight to that item in the list. In previous versions of FM, you could sort the list by either the first or second field and the "quick scroll" worked according to which field the list was sorted by. THE BUG: In FileMaker 7 the "quick scroll" only works on the first field even if the list is sorted by second field. If you've got a long list that makes for an awful lot of scrolling which is the whole point of the "quick scroll" feature. Please let me know if I'm missing something here.

Is there a way to temporarily disable a specific script step? As I recall, macro writing in Excel allowed you to change a line of code to a comment by putting something like quotation marks in front of the line of code. This way you could toggle the code to active or inactive by deleting or adding the quotation marks. Does anybody know of a way to keep the text of a script intact but temporarily disable it? Is there a way to simultaneously share the same file that resides on a server? The manual seems to say it's not supported, but there is a menu choice to make the file a multiple user file. I have a system that is composed of 4 related files that I placed on a server. I'd like any of the work stations on my LAN to have access to these databases at the same time. Can it be done? If not, I think this is a serious flaw in Filemaker! Thanks for any help.

Only two of my customers actually have FMP installed - both V6. When V7 was announced, I told them to ignore it until V7.5 came out. Well, V7.0.2 or something has arrived and I suspect this is IT until V8. Customer A has one application only. They are most unlikely to want any others. (This is a dream business - simple 'product', no competition and no need to diversify, etc.) I can see no earthly reason for them to upgrade before they are forced to by the usual hardware/software cycle. This should be simple, but can't seem to find the way to do it. In the header of the layout I have 3 label fields, each occupying its own line. I want the label field to be centered for each line. For example, like a letterhead-Name top line; Address next line and date 3rd line.If this were a word processor I would select the text and simply center the 3 lines on the page. I can't seem to do this with FMP. The only way to get this to work is to expand the label field the complete width of the page, and then go to -->format-->align text -->center. I currently use FMP 5.5. I would like to have a button next to a field (container) in data entry, that would allow the user to see a pop-up "lookup" of thumbnails of photos in a related database. Then he could just pick the photo that he wants and the current database container field would be linked to (and display) that photo. In essense, a glorified "browse" button like everyone uses to pick/select/or save a file when using virtually any OS and application. This option is not available in 5.5 (that I know of). Is it available in 6 or 7? Also, I have heard that it is not real easy to convert 5.5 solutions to 7. Is that a valid concern? Thanks

Has anyone noticed that the text in filemaker for windows is bigger on screen since the 7.0v2 update. I have fields that fit a certain amount of text just fine but after the upgrade they disabled font smoothing and now the text gets cut off. The wierd thing is that if I print the page it displays just fine on the printed version. Shouldn't it be the same size on screen as printed out? Everyone complained about the fuzzy text in filemaker for windows when 7 first came out but I personally think that this is worse. It doesn't matter what font I use it always appears bigger on screen than printed. I can view the database at 75% or 125% and it re-enables font smoothing …

There is a serious bug in Filemaker 7's constrain script step. In FM6, if you did a find and then constrained that found set, you'd get fewer records. If the constraint resulted in zero found records, the result would be a found set containing zero records. Any further contrains would always result in zero records. Now in FM7, if a constraint finds zero records, it returns a 401 error BUT the resulting found set IGNORES the contstraint totally and actually contains all the records that were in the found set prior to the constraint!!
