I have a very basic FM7 developer database of business contact records. It's so basic that all it is, is the database FM7 creates on the fly when you open a CSV file. I sell business leads and want to be able to distribute my sales leads via a runtime FM7 database. The problem is my database is so plain and boring and I don't have any custom navagation or buttons so it assumes the user knows how to use FM7. I'd like to have a professional database look designed around my data. I'm just starting off on this venture so I don't have a lot of money but I am willing to pay. Is it possible for Filemaker to capture and display the IP address of the host machine? There is a remote database I need access to that is on a machine with only dialup. I would like the users of the remote database to start (open) the database, have the file report the IP address, and then the user can call me with the IP address so I can access the file. Wishful thinking on my part? The remote file is on a windoze machine (running 98se) and while I know it is possible to get the IP from the command line, the users of the machine do not know much about computers and even less about windoze than I do. I recently upgraded all of the Users to Mac OSX. The computer running the 5.0v2 Server is still 9.2.2. Since the upgrade, Only 3 users seem to be able to get on at a time. I have reinstalled the Server, and the number of guests is set to 30 (was at 15) and I have less than 10 trying to get on. Also, 15 files are open at the server (was 19). I have found a workaround: unplug the network for the user; open FileMaker; reconnect the network; then open FileMaker files. For most this is not a terrible inconvenience. But it is surely not the best solution. The FileMaker Pro Technotes only indicates that this happens when there are more than one copy of the Server run…

Excuse my newbie-ness, but I would like to write a find script that, when it doesn't find the exact fname and lname, returns a found set of the 20 closest records for a portal pick list. This would solve variations in spelling and cut down on duplicating client records. If the user didn't find the client, then he or she would be presented with the option of adding a new record. Could this be done with a pop-down value list that also contained "New" as a choice? How to get the ten closest matches into a value list...worry, worry. Any hints?

Hi, I'm on holiday in France and I got a little happy and purchased the 7 trail>real and guess what? I haven't got the xDBCODBC Client folder! Just been onto Apple support (US) on my mobile and kept holding for 40mins while the guy figured out what to do and then the connection broke. If the xDBCODBC Client folder is small enough ie less than 10Mb can anyone let me have it or tell me where I might be able to download it. BTW FMPro'ing whislt on hols is not as sick as it sounds! I need to put something together that would keep the previous state of a field in another field, as well as a change date. For ex, let's say we have the field price, i would want a field named, say oldPrice, which would hold the value of the field before it was last changed and a priceChangeDate field which would hold the date and time of change. initial experiments with calculations haven't gotten me anywhere just yet... anybody have any pointers? tia

I wonder if anyone have tested the speed & storage comparation between look-up list and related table look-up in fm7 with over a thousand of records? The problem is my database consists of many look-up such as look-ups for city, province, etc... The first approach is to use look-up value list, for each record, it will store the name of the city into each record. The second appraoch is to use related table (still through value list), filemaker will only need to store the ID of the city in the record. From the relational DB perspective, the second approach will save the storage space because for each record, only the id is stored in each record. However, …

I'm getting a odd (at least it seems so to me!) error message; whenever I click on an empty spot on my "Home" layout in Browse mode this error pops up: "This action cannot be performed because the required table is missing." It acts as if the entire layout is a button that's trying to call a script. All the other buttons on the page work fine. I'm using an interface file that pulls data from three other files (each with multiple tables). There are no tables defined in the interface file. Hello, I am very new to using FileMaker 7.0 (3 days) and have a rookie question. I need to import data from an Excel spreadsheet to populate fields in only one of the three layouts I currently have. I am on the target layout when I go to import but when I select the file and see the available target fields they are from one of the other layouts. Do I need to create a script to perform this function? Follow up...I have a single unique identifier field for all layouts and wish to associate my import data with that field. If I import that field with my new records but do not allow overwrite of that field will my new records be associated correctly with that field? …

I have a medical database which I am moving to FM 7 by reconstructing the database and importing the records. I have a main page that holds patient data with a portal to a related table of prescriptions. I have a button which will take me to the related prescriptions. In FM6, I then can constrain find to find only todays prescriptions. In FM7, it says it finds eg 3 prescriptions, but still displays all the prescriptions for this person. I had to "show omitted" twice to get the right display. Any one else have this experience?

As a complete filemaker know-no, I am looking for information about creating a web help system for a filemaker database application (solution?). I can work with a variety of help authoring tools (Robohelp, AuthorIT, WebWorks Publisher, etc.) but have no idea whether these can be used in conjunction with filemaker. I have a little puzzling situation. I want to create an opener script, but no matter what I do to point to the hosted file in developer, it always points back to my local version rather than using the one on the server. I'm pretty sure this will work on a user's machine where there is no local version, but I can't seem to force it to point to the one on the server from my own machine. I've tried using both the server name, as well as the IP address. I've tried both with and without relative addresses. I've even copied the file over to the server, renamed my local file and then executed the "opener". I debugged it and actually watched it change the reference from the hoste…

Never had need for this function before, and had problems getting it to bring up correct result in the layout. I assume it's purpose is to simply put in a text field whatever name you've set the layout to be called. Seems obvious.... But it only brings up the name of the first layout you go to and then stays on that one whatever you layout you switch to. Must be missing something blitheringly obvious. I've worked round it anyhow, but now I'm curious. Maybe someone has a simple answer....

HELP!!! I have inherited a database that was started and maintained by someone who has no database management ability. It is a database used to maintain standardized test scores. What I WANT is one field to show the Grade Equivalent Score and one field to show the Percentile Score. The other person put both pieces of information into the same field !! So, a sample records would have something like "4.5 gr 87 percentile". Is there a way to write a script to take this information and split it into the two new fields? I am an IT Trainer and happen to dabble in FM Pro. Went to a client earlier this week using FM4.1. I was asked how to enter characters with foreign character accents. They are using Macs and Version 4.1. I am a Windows user so unfortunately not sure of how to get Accents on Mac, There did not appear to be an option to insert symbols etc. Hope you can help. I have a question about some (for me) difficult calculation. I have a table with Events. Every Event can have several participants (own table). The event has a limit of how many participants it can have. Every participant has a status, which can be "allowed" or "not allowed" (which is choosen from a valuelist). I am having a problem with auto-entering serial numbers into a Packing List file. What i want to do is for every packing list number have the item number field start generating from "1". i.e. Packing List # 398335 have the item numbers start generating from one and continue in increments of one. then when I create a new packing list number....let's say 398337, I want to have the item number field revert back to generating numbers from one. Have just installed FM Pro 7, only to find that the record font display is blurred and hard to read, whereas FM6 is nice and sharp. I have tried the three different font smoothing settings in Preferences, none of which improve the situation. Enlarging the window display is not an option. We have a daily list which is starting to print data onto the next line; ie over the top of the next record. It occurs when there is too much text in a field. I want it to truncate the view, not flow over. This is only visible on paper,(not in Preview) -and does not always occur! Steve

I am a new user to FileMaker, and am running 6.0 v2. I am trying to convert a limited range of text answers (strongly disagree, disagree, neutral, agree, strongly agree) into corresponding numberic values (1,2,3,4,5 respectively). I cannot figure out if there is a function that will allow me to assign numeric values to these limited text responses (TextToNum doesn't work for this), or devise another clever way to convert the data. I have a small database that creates and stores my companies work orders. Often times the work may run over multiple days, so I used repeating fields for the details, like date, work to be performed, location, etc. Now I'd like to be able to do reports showing what's pending, grouped by date. Hi, I am new here and hoping someone can help me recover my data. Here's what happened: An employee who is not very experienced thought she was "opening" a database when she went to the File Menu (from within Filemaker Pro) and chose "New Database" (instead of the next option down which is "Open Database"). My hard drive just got totaled by fp7!! I used the Send Email script to send a group email to all the email addresses in the found set. A dialog in fp7 came up and I hit the Send button. It crashed Outlook Express 6 and then damaged the Win XP System Volume Information folder on the hard drive. Now I can't access the drive at all. Anyone know anything about this problem??

For those of us who have been using custom web publishing via CDML, we will of course have to re-do everything. Version 7 no longer supports CDML. And since I dont want to learn PHP or use lasso right now...a lot of existing CDML web pages to convert. FileMaker says they will have a CDML to XML conversion tool available, but do not provide any details as to what it will do, or when it will be available. I am very new to using FM, and sadly we are running version 4.1 on a Mac. I need to tally up the total number from certain fields. For example, we keep a record of each print job done and the number of copies in each job. I need the total number of copies for all print jobs. I recently converted from FM6 to 7. In my db I use SS numbers as a unique field and is validated to prevent duplicates from being enter twice... with a warning message if the validation fails.... pretty simple stuff. On FM6 the validation occurred almost immediately after entering in a SS number. The message would pop up as soon as you moved to another field if it was a duplicate. Now after converting to FM7, the validation occurs about 20 fields later when entering a dupe or when exiting to another record. Makes it pretty bad to enter all the information for 20 fields and then find out the record already exists. Any one else seen this or is it something is just m…

Hi, I'm helping a friend who just installed windows 2000. They use (I believe) Filemaker 5 (could be different.) A few weeks ago, she had a big crash and had to have her hard drive replaced. She reinstalled Filemaker and put in her database. Yesterday, inexplicably, the database showed no info and a window came up saying that the file named "related" was corrupted. I know related is where she stores all her data. I copied the "related" file she had on her backup disk and it worked fine...for a while. Then it come up as corrupted again. Hi there. I can't seem to figure out how to add a conditional statement to a layout which will allow the expansion of the body if a certain boolean variable is toggled. Specifically, this is for a school's database in which certain students need a double address (for report cards, etc). If "Double Report" is set as "Yes" then I want the body section to be twice as large and contain the second address. I have a feeling this may be impossible. Any help would be appreciated! I am relatively new to FM - I have made our office job book and timesheets into a FM DB that has worked so great my boss want's me to extend it to include other items such as billing. I have a few pop-up lists in my database. Is there a way to increase the size, ie the number of values displayed per page? I am a complete FM newbie. I tried to link a database to another database using the "Relationship" screen and didn't have any success. I subsequently discarded all of the relationship tables icons in the same field to get back to my original database, however now each field says "table missing". In Layout setup it won't let me select my original database table from the drop down menu. Apologize in advance for the probably simple question, but the solution's been eluding me... I have two databases: one contains about 6000 records of sales leads, the other contains about 12 dealers. A dealer is assigned a territory by states; territory is currently defined in the database as a repeating field (up to 10 values; though no dealer covers 10 states, some do cover more states than others). I have a simple FMP 5.5 script that deletes empty records when the file is closed. It is, simply: allow user abort [off] perform find [restore] (were all fields are empty) delete all records [no dialog] This works great in FMP 5.5, but in FMP7, there is a dialog and I am not sure how to work around it. It says, "No records match this set of find requests" when there are no records found by the find. What is WORSE is it gives the user the [continue] and (gasp!) [modify find] buttons!!! This doesn't work in FM7, I've noticed..... So how to go about it? Do I need to devise a custom keyboard arrangement that will input the Unicode characters I need, or is there some other way to go about this? Any ideas? All help greatly appreciated.... PJC

Dear friends: Perhaps you may help me. I have built a database with text in MacGreek on FileMaker 6. When I have imported the database into FM7 the new program doesn't recognize MacGreek and it is unable to manage the text. Some glyphs are missing and instead I just see empty boxes. My questions are as follows: 1) Can FM7 recognize all old ASCII systems? I have tried with all text field configuratios: unicode, Greek, etc. Am I forgetting something (some field option)? 2) Is there any way to automatically convert ASCII systems into Unicode within FM7? I am having a brain cramp. I have replaced the generic Find Mode with a scripted Find routine, shown below. All steps functions properly EXCEPT those shown in Red. When that condition occurs, the script somehow bypasses the Status(CurrentError) check and the result is a Found Set of Zero records. Has anyone reached a limit of relationships between files before they get a performance hit? We have 15 users running all day, with about 25 files - off filemaker server. Currently there are about 15 relationships. Anyone found a limit where performance starts to go, or is there a formula to work out a reasonable maximum? Just I've been thinking of expanding our database and the plans I have would involve creating a few relationships per additional file. Any ideas?

Well, to begin with, I'm new to FileMaker. I haven't been able to find an answer to my question just by searching, so I decided I'd post it and see if you guys could help me out. In our office we have pre-printed insurance forms that we used to fill out by typewriter. We've decided to switch over and do it on the computer. I have a table of students' marks. Is there a way that I can calculate the average mark? Do I need to create a separate table of the average? Do I use the function average() to make the calculation? How does it work across records? Each record just has one mark. So I need to calculate the average by summing all the records and dividing it by the number of records. How can I do this? I have 4 computers each with their own version of Filemaker 7, sharing a file from a Remote (ethernet link) computer. Making changes to a field remotely, does not show up on the Main File. This is happening either when making changes manually or using a "Script". The File has a relationship which looks for the IP address of the "Original" File. I thought the purpose of remote files was to allow changes over a Network? Making a new record remotely seems to work fine ? ALL Access privileges required for the action have been authorized via a "Priviledge Set"

We are running FM 5.0 v3 installed on local machines running WinXP. The LAN is a Novell client where students are storing their data files on a network space. Problem I have a class of 30 students and we are designing very basic databases (15 records, 15 fields and a few pictures, design colours). The majority of the class finds that their files routinely corrupt and their computers become very sluggish and FM stops responding frequently. I am very confused with the new relationships graph. I think I am making this harder than it is. You no longer name the relationship, you name the table occurance. Problem is this is only half of the relationship I am confused about which table accurance go's on the left vs right side. I think they made this more confusing just to have cute looking graph's The most confusing is setting up value list using values from a field sorted by a relationship. We have a couple of FilemakerPro files shared on an Appleshare IP volumes. One of the computers accessing the files crashed. One file got damages and trying to open it generates a "the file is damaged and cannott be opened.Use the recover command to recover this file". Using the Recover command (on a copy of the file) seems to work fine , I get the usual xxx kbytes were recovered , 0 fileds were skipped etc. , but it generates a file that doesn't open and gives me this message: "The access privileges in this file have been damaged or possibly tampered with. How would you delete multiple records in a script? Also, how would you know where in the table you are? I see no funtion that allow you to move the record counter to the top of the file. Using SQL deleting records is easy enough. But in FM 6, do I have to find the records I want first, then delete them? I have pulled a list of icons from a CAD drawing. This list represents the total number of telephony devices from a floor plan and includes subsequent information answered at insertion time, such as label name, location and etc. The block type of each icon is set up by the CAD program and is labeled with the rest of the information, based on the block type. I want to create a layout which has 4 portals beside each other, representing 4 tables (Clients, Departments, Initiatives, and Projects). I want these portals to be relational, ie. if I select a client from the first portal, the department portal shows only those departments associated with that client. I need help I have 2 tables in FM7, one is basically a demographic table and the other a calendar type layout. The calendar is in list view and has records containing portals that show data from the demogrpahics table. I would like to be able to show some data for the current found record in the demographics table at the very top of the calendar layout. Can this be done in the header ? I have two fields utilizing radio buttons. Each year I need to reset these buttons to the default value I have set. I am trying to use a script to go through the records and perform this task. I have a portal...which draws it's information from a 2nd data base. I would like to make 2 two scripts that do the following: 1) The first script I would like to make is one that goes to the second data base, but keeps the same insured ID. This is so I can add a line to the portal.
